Turkish Food Festival and a One-Night Only Concert by Jessica Sanchez at The Peninsula Manila
Jessica Sanchez, the Filipina-American singer-songwriter who rose to prominence following her finish as first runner-up on the eleventh season of American Idol is set to debut in Salon de Ning of The Peninsula Manila for a one night concert on May 25, Thursday at 8:30 pm. The California-raised singer-songwriter has released one album and numerous singles, performed for former United States president Barack Obama and his family at the White House, and guest starred in the hit comedy-drama TV series Glee. Jessica Sanchez’s Salon de Ning show, entitled “Jessica Sanchez Live in Salon de Ning” will be a night of the music and stories that shaped Jessica. She will be singing the hits of Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Roberta Flack, and her original compositions. She will be accompanied by her musical director Adonis Tabanda and the band Day One. Tickets are prices at P3,500 and inclusive of a two-hour long open bar.
The Turkish Embassy and The Peninsula Manila are mounting a Turkish Food Festival in Escolta Buffet Restaurant from May 23 to 27, 2023. Shaped by more than a thousand years of diverse cultures and traditions, social heritage and stories, Türkiye presents its exquisite and diverse flavors to the world through the “Turkish Cuisine Week” food festival. On the occasion of the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, “Turkish Cuisine Week” will be celebrated throughout the world for the second consecutive year from May 21 to 27 and aims to introduce Türkiye’s rich gastronomic culture to a broad global audience through the embassies and consulates of the Republic of Türkiye.
This year’s special menu consists of local dishes from the city of Antakya (with the ancient name of Antioch) in Hatay province, which is included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and renowned for its diverse cuisine. Boasting more than 650 dishes, Hatay’s gastronomy is a Mediterranean cuisine characterized by its use of fresh vegetables, quality olive oil, legumes, and cereals. As Hatay’s cuisine is the showpiece of this year’s Turkish Cuisine Week, Escolta’s different buffet stations will feature mouth-watering Biberli Ekmek (flatbread with red pepper paste), Zeytin Salatası (green olive salad), Hummus (mixed chickpeas and tahini dip), Mucver (Turkish zucchini fritters), Muska Boregi (spinach and cheese filo parcels), Tepsi Kebabı (oven-baked kebab), and Kayısı Tatlısı (stuffed dried apricot with clotted cream and walnut), among many others. The buffet selection will also showcase other regional Turkish dishes that will be prepared using local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. It will showcase all aspects of Turkish cuisine, including Turkish coffee, Turkish tea, and the most quintessential of all Turkish sweets – Turkish Delight.

Walnut Crusted Eggs over Greens
Made with heart-healthy walnuts and a blend of organic greens, this simple recipe is a delicious way to enjoy eggs for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
1 serving Preparation time: 10 minutes
Ingredients 2 teaspoons California Olive Ranch Olive Oil, divided 1 teaspoon minced garlic 2 cups Earthbound Organic Power Greens blend 1 teaspoon San-J tamari, reduced sodium ½ teaspoon lemon juice 2 tablespoons L&B Walnuts, finely chopped, divided 1 L&B Organic Large Egg Optional: Finely diced fresh tomatoes, for serving
Directions
In a nonstick sauté pan, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil over medium high heat.
Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add greens, tamari and lemon juice. Toss with tongs until greens are wilted, about 1 minute. Do not overcook. Set aside in pan to keep warm.
In a separate nonstick sauté pan, heat remaining 1 teaspoon olive oil over medium high heat.
Sprinkle 1 ½ tablespoons of finely ground walnuts in center of pan and crack egg on top of walnuts, sprinkling the remaining walnuts on top of the egg. Cook until whites are firm, about 1 minute.
Carefully flip egg, being careful to not break the yolk. Cook for another 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Place greens on plate and top with walnut crusted egg. Chef's tip: Top with finely diced fresh tomatoes, if desired.

While a serving will give you some valuable vitamins and nutrients, that same serving size is only 1.5 ounces, and it's going to account for a big chunk of your daily calorie intake. If you're sitting on the couch and munching peanuts while you're watching television, that's going to add up fast — just half a cup is a fifth of your calories for the day! Peanuts are also associated with something called aflatoxins — they're not the only food that can be contaminated, and corn is also particularly vulnerable. Aflatoxins are a fungi, and entire crops can be contaminated at any time, from the field to storage after processing. Since they've been linked to an increase in the risk of liver cancer, it's vitally important to make sure you don't eat any peanuts that look moldy or discolored. Purchasing peanuts only from large-scale, well-known commercial companies will reduce the risk, but you still should use a lot of caution if you can't give them up. Almonds might be delicious, but bitter almonds can be deadly. The kind we eat by the handful are sweet almonds, but bitter almonds are actually apricot kernels. Even though they're what gives that almond flavor to things like marzipan, eating them raw is dangerous. Raw bitter almonds are filled with a type of cyanide, and when they're prepared properly, they're cyanide-free and used as spices or flavorings. They contain something called hydrocyanic acid, and that acid disappears when it's heated. But case studies of people who eat them raw are nothing short of terrifying, including one case where a 67-year-old woman ate only four (or five) bitter almonds, thinking they were "medicinal." Just that amount gave her light-headedness and nausea, and when she had 12 more, she was incapacitated and on her way to the emergency room within 15 minutes. Bitter almonds are nothing to mess around with, and should just be avoided. Nuts are one of those amazing foods that are great on their own, and if you can eat these tasty little morsels by the handful, you're not alone.
