A/N: i wrote this thinking that both people in this fic are of drinking age; i’m not, but i thought it would be a cool idea. i can assume many adult gatherings feature alcohol, so yeah. drinking isn’t integral to the plot of this fic. also it is pre-(or post)pandemic bc it’s just a general rule of thumb to not have parties right now.

“Don’t, kill, me,” Karl warbles, setting down his bottle with a sigh. Freaks plays loud and tinny on the TV, album cover bathing those occupying the couch in a grayish light. Those occupants being just you and Karl. The room is lit with purple string lights and that one thrifted lamp with frogs on the shade he’d sworn was the best purchase he’s ever made. You’re sprawled out on the other half of the sofa, ankles crossed and a can of vodka seltzer swaying in your hand. The song changes to 20 Min by Lil Uzi and your foot bounces to the beat.

“What time is it?” You sigh, placing the nearly-empty can onto the coffee table next to your apple berry-flavored pen. He flicks his wrist towards his face.

“2:46,” he delivers, and takes a swig of the Angry Orchard in his hand. His sixth, specifically. The rest of the group had left roughly ten minutes ago, leaving the two loneliest people to drink alone. You, thoroughly tipsy, decided it was better to spend the night on his spare than pay $50 for an Uber. He agreed, of course. Why wouldn’t he?

Lifting onto your elbows, you just stare at him. He lifts an ankle to cross over the other and your eyes drop. What is his fascination with Spongebob socks?

“We should play 20 questions.”

“What?” His head swivels like a bobblehead and a giggle barely escapes your lips.

“20 questions!” You say excitedly, heaving onto your knees to look at him earnestly. “You go first.”

“Um, okay.” The song fades into Paper Planes and he bobs his head to the beat. “What’s your favorite breed of dog?”

“Shiba inu. Are you a virgin?”

The fucking tone of your voice makes him dissolve into giggles, hand pressed to his chest. You just shrug, reaching for the pen in the table. “Fair question, I think,” you say defensively. His chest heaves, but he sits up.

“No—no, I’m not a virgin.” His cheeks are red, but he’s smiling like it was an easy answer. Your mind floods with images of his long hair in your face, long fingers—a sweaty chest. You shake your head. “Okay, my turn,” he continues, giving you a weird look. “would you rather kiss Chucky Cheese or Ronald McDonald?”

“Karl!” You whine. “That is not how 20 Questions works!” You grumpily pull from your pen, blowing the smoke out of the side of your mouth. Eughk. Apple berry sucks.

“Fine, fine,” he sighs, rolling his eyes. The tell-tale guitar chords of The Adults Are Talking floods the room and his face brightens with a new question. “Have you ever been to a concert?”

“Yes, actually. The Jonas Brothers in 2009.” He wrinkles his nose, finishing his cider and dropping it onto the coffee table with a sharp noise. Your eyebrows furrow. “Don’t you dare badmouth my boys.”

“Wasn’t gonna!” He reaches for your pen and you give it to him with a slight pout on your lips that he glances at.

“Good. Where is the weirdest place you’ve had sex?” A grin climbs your lips.

“Jesus Christ, Y/N.” His eyes widen and smoke curls out of his nostrils as he hands your pen back. You just shrug and pick up your discarded seltzer. “Gimme a sec to think.”

“So many places?” You tease, finishing the last drop of your drink and crushing it beneath your palm. He shrugs, mirroring you, and cracks open another cider. He seems to think, brows furrowing, as he pulls a swig from the dark bottle.

“Boat.”

“Boat,” you repeat.

“Yup.” He looks at you, gaze flickering to your lips imperceptibly fast. If you were sober you’d probably notice, but you’re not and you don’t.

“You’ve fucked on a boat?” No way. Karl Jacobs. On a boat. Having sex. What an image—

“Yeah, senior year was great for me.” More Than A Woman fills the space of the silence as you consider this. You blink, processing.

“Whose boat?” You're genuinely curious. Was it a yacht, pontoon, fishing boat? Row boat? The sudden scene of him getting his foot stuck in a fishing net while pantless clouds your vision.

“My girlfriend’s.” And that’s that on that because he’s moving on before you can open your mouth and continue the discussion of the logistics of this. “Stop investigating, perv. Now it’s my turn. Hmm— wait! Where is the weirdest place you have had sex?” A sneaky grin is on his lips and now you just want to kiss him, damn it.

“I-Uh. I think it was under the bleachers. I also had a great senior year,” you offer, scooting forward on your knees so that you’re only a foot from Karl. He looks impressed, actually.

“Who was it?”

Your eyebrow raises in question.

“Personal question or one of the 16 left, Karl?”

His cheeks heat and he looks once to the TV.

“Personal,” he mutters into the mouth of his bottle.

“It was Brian Hernandez,” you sigh, gazing off into the distance with a fond look in your eyes. You feel the end of the game of 20 questions as you see him chew on his bottom lip from your peripheral. “Dude was insatiable. Managed girls’ basketball and looked damn good doing it.”

“I managed girls’ soccer,” he says simply, uncrossing his legs. “My girlfriend was goalie.”

“How long did you guys date?” You fold your legs up underneath you, tucking a lock of hair behind your ear. You feel the most sober now out of all tonight.

“Dunno.” He sips at his cider. “Couple weeks maybe?”

You smirk. “Karl Jacobs puts out in the first couple weeks?” That’s hot, you don’t say. He gives you a look. “18 year old Karl was a player,” you tease, leaning forward to poke at his chest.

Smacking your hand away, he sighs and lifts a hand to tousle his hair.

“Guess he was.” Clear eyes meet yours and you take a hit from the pen that lays discarded in your palm. He watches the smoke float from your mouth. The TV screen swipes to Deceptacon and the mood quickly shifts. “So.” He turns toward you with lifted eyebrows. “You were a total nerd in highschool, huh.”

Your jaw drops. “I was not!”

“Come on; yes, you were.” He makes a face and drains half the bottle of cider. “You probably were in SpellBowl and every teacher’s pet.”

“Nice try, bitch. You were a dumb jock. I’ve seen the pictures. The yearbook pictures.” You look pointedly at his hair.

“My hair was not that bad.”

“Yes it was.”

“No, it wasn’t,” he grumbles and pushes his hand through his long curls. “Just a little… short.” It’s your turn to make a face.

“A buzz cut nearly to your scalp is more than short.” He huffs at you and finishes the cider just as the song switches. “Anyways.” You don’t really have anything to say, actually. Too busy thinking about teenage Karl smacking tennis rackets around and fielding lost soccer balls for his girlfriend. She’s long gone, right?

“Are you wearing lingerie?” Karl asks suddenly and you look up. He stares pointedly at your chest and you move a hand to pat at your stomach.

“Oh,” you start, and flick the last three buttons open, fabric falling to reveal a baby blue lace corset. “Yeah.” He can’t seem to stop imagining what’s underneath it. Fuck. “Do you like it?” The tone in your voice is taunting and he has to look away.

He clears his throat and places the second glass bottle onto the coffee table.

“Yes.”

You rise onto your knees and pull your arms out of the button-up, letting it fall back on the couch.

“Do you want to touch it?” You're looking up at him from underneath your eyelashes, he realizes, and you know exactly what you’re doing. You’re not asking if he wants to touch the corset; you’re asking if he wants to touch you.

“Can I?” He glances at you warily. You just nod, and it’s then that you’re shuffling forward. The material is soft on his fingertips when he brushes a hand across your torso. “Silk,” he mumbles, and stares, transfixed, at the loopy flower pattern crawling across your waist in shades of milky blue. You just hum and watch. He realizes suddenly when he traces a finger up on the ridge of the neckline that you’re not wearing anything underneath it. It makes him stop in his tracks, neck flushing. “Are-are you—,”

“Wearing a bra? No, I’m not.” You lay a hand on his shoulder, hoisting one leg over his thighs and settling down comfortable on his lap. He bristles then relaxes as you slide a hand up into his scalp. “Do you want me to show you?”

He glares at you, barely annoyed, and shifts so that his large hands rest in the curve of your waist. Poison starts in the speakers as his eyebrow raises.

“Do you normally wear corsets when we all hang out?” A lock of your hair moves past your cheek as he brushes it out of the way. His mouth tilts into a smirk. You seem to think about it, lips pursed, and grip both his shoulders in your hands.

“Only when I’ve got someone to impress.” A hand on your lower back presses insistently and you fall further into his lap.

“Who are you here to impress, Y/N?” He’s barely an inch from your mouth now, and can’t seem to keep his eyes on one part of your face. Cool breath fans onto your cheeks and they warm. God, he’s even cuter up close.

“You,” barely passes your lips before he’s taking the side of your neck into his hand and stretching to connect your lips with his own.

Cherry, you think. Cherry chapstick, that cheeky bastard. Taking your wrist in his hand, he loops it up and around his neck. You’re making a noise into his mouth, you realize, right as he’s sliding a hand down to the side of your thigh and gripping it between his long fingers. You shiver as he pulls away too soon, pressing a small kiss to the corner of your mouth before sinking his teeth into your neck. The gasp that leaves your mouth is surprisingly loud and your cheeks flush further. He just hums, pleased, and stretches an arm to the opposite side of your waist to hug you closer. Warm lips move on the skin of your neck and his tongue darts out few and far between the kisses.

“Fuck,” he breathes when your hips jerk forward once.

“Sorry,” you whisper up at the ceiling, eyes falling shut. “reflex.”

He grins against your neck and moves to grip an ass cheek in his palm.

“Your reflex to me licking a hickey is to grind into my crotch?” he teases. You just have to nod, lips parted, as he soothes another bruise with his tongue.

“Karl.” He seems to either not hear you or ignore you for he’s removing himself from your neck and connecting your mouths once more. “Karl,” you stutter between kisses, and he squeezes at your ass.

“Yes?” His lips are bitten and puffy when he pulls away, a smug look on his beautiful face.

“Take off my corset.”

He looks between your face and the lingerie, eyebrows raised in surprise.

“Don’t mind if I do.”

January 29, 2020

“Well, despite my extensive protestations, I cannot find any reason whatsoever to keep you here.” Anton, the head of the Crovan’s Gate diesel shop, said as he shut his toolbox with a petulant clang.

55 010 and Wendell looked at each other with no small amount of relief. Since the events of Christmas, the works had been beside themselves in trying to find a cause of 010′s existence as well as fixing the damage to Wendell’s chassis from when he fell off the jack stands on Christmas day.

A naturally superstitious man, Anton had refused to clear 010 for traffic until he went over her with a fine-toothed comb. This was a process that had taken over a month, and had insulted Wendell more than it had 010, as the Class 47 had believed that Anton was looking for a way to keep 010 out of traffic (he was), while the Deltic - who hadn’t been properly serviced since the late 1970′s - found the whole process very therapeutic.

All that being said, the pair were anxious to get out of the sheds and onto the main line once again - Wendell wanted to stretch his wheels properly, while 010 was deeply excited to see the bright future of the year 2020.

Anton left, shutting off the lights behind him. The two engines would have kept talking, but they’d honestly exhausted their conversational reserves after being together for over a month, so instead they fell asleep, dreaming of the world outside the sheds...

December 26, 1981

Doncaster Station, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England

55 010 sleepily opened one eye to the sounds of an argument. Some men were clustered around the Class 47 that was on the siding. They sounded like they were trying to figure out what to do with her.

One group was saying that she should be shoved onto the out of use lines, while the others were saying that doing that would take too long. The 47 seemed to be stuck in the middle, unsure of which side to take. At one point, he opened his mouth to agree with the shunting plan, before he stopped. A flurry of emotions passed across his face in an instant, before he shut his mouth, glared at the men he’d been about to agree with, and put his wheel down.

“I’m not going to miss my path and spend all day in passing loops just to put her away - look at all the switches you’d have to hand throw! It’d take ages!”

With that the other men now held a majority, so without much more discussion the 47 was coupled up to her, and the train set off for parts unknown.

“Where are we going?” She’d sleepily asked the 47 - who’d introduced himself as number 556 - as they rattled across the Pennines.  

“Dunno,” He’d said quietly - they were coupled face-to-face, and she felt vaguely bad that he was driving backwards on her behalf. “Some coach depot I’ve never heard of - Titfield or Tidmouse or something like that.”

December 27, 1981

Tidmouth Station, Tidmouth, Tidmouth and South Haltraughshire, Sodor

47 556 and 55 010 eventually made it across the bridge and onto the Island very early on the morning of the 27th. It was a quiet little Island railway out here in the west country, and they met few trains on their way by.

A class 86 shouted hello from an electrified branch.

A old Hymek, somehow still in service, honked amiably as he passed with a goods train.

Even an old blue steam engine clattered by on a rail tour. This one looked at them funny, but the expected malice wasn’t there, merely confusion at the unusual double-header.

Eventually arriving at the big station at the end of the line, the two engines were met by a older gentleman in a top hat.

He introduced himself as the Controller for the region, and asked what they were doing here.

As 556 explained why he was also carrying a broken-down Deltic on his train, 010′s attention wandered to the rest of the station.

It was a beautiful design, like King's Cross, or Euston before they ruined it, but the roof of the trainshed was simply covered in soot - it was almost like they hadn’t cleaned it since before the end of steam.

Then there was a whistle from outside the platforms.

Both diesels goggled as a tender engine, painted an almost gaudy shade of bright blue with red lining, rolled into the station with a train of teak coaches.

At almost the same time, two more whistles were heard, and a train of GWR autocoaches complete with a Pannier Tank in the middle rattled in alongside a green saddle tank engine of indeterminate origin towing a pair of ancient compartment coaches.

“What is that?” 010 asked, shocked to see clean and well-maintained steam this far into the 1980s.

“Those are Gordon, Duck, and Percy.” Said the controller kindly.

“Are they all on rail tours?” Asked 556, causing the controller to laugh.

“No! They’re my engines! They work every day because they’re still useful.”

Neither diesel said anything. 556 was shocked that BR was allowing this to happen, but 010 suddenly felt a surge of hope. If they were still running steam here, maybe she could convince 556 to leave her here on his way home...

Something must have shown in her face - or maybe even 556′s, because the next thing the controller said was: “If I may, my railroad is currently experiencing a locomotive shortage. We have to keep relying on the other railway for temporary engines, but they aren’t the most reliable. Would either of you happen to know where I could find some strong, hardworking locomotives?”

They stabled 556 and 010 in the sheds with the steam engines over the New Year’s holiday. It was an almost out-of-body experience for 010, who was used to the cold and unfriendly atmosphere of Finsbury Park TMD, and had no idea how to deal with engines who, when told to treat her nicely, immediately made sure to include her in their singing of  Auld Lang Syne.

A few weeks later, both engines had been successfully outshopped at the massive works complex in the west of the island. 556 had required little repairs, but had rolled out with a new coat of paint and a new name, Wendell, chosen after a friendly dog that hung around the works.

It took longer for 010. She had many, many worn out parts that required removal and repair, and her engines needed a full overhaul. During this time period, some of the female welding staff had spoken to her about needing to choose a name before one was chosen for her - apparently the Hymek she’d seen was named Bear, and she didn’t want that did she?

After a few days with books on baby names, a set of brass nameplates were bolted to her sides - they read “DAPHNE” in big letters.

While she was there, the workmen asked her what she wanted to be painted. When her request for a new coat of Rail Blue was met with groans, the men explained that they were bored of normal paint schemes and would paint anything she wanted.

Two weeks later she rolled out of the works feeling like a new engine. Her motors fired on all cylinders, her grease and oil was fresh, and her new paint sparkled in the sun. She’d always liked how Deltic - The Deltic, DP1 - had looked, and the men had grinned at each other when she told them about how the irritable prototype had spent most of his free time whining about not having stripes that went the whole way down his body.

Daphne found out why when she rolled into Tidmouth Shed that night. There was another express diesel on this island - a big Class 46 - and the similarities were striking. Both had similar designs, and had non-standard paint - the 46 was red, she was blue - with gold stripes down their sides. The 46 was named Delta - a very similar sounding name, and when she opened her eyes and took in Daphne and her nameplates, it took her all of two seconds to begin smiling broadly.

“You look like you could be my big sister!” She said.

Daphne, expecting some sort of hostility, wasn’t sure how to respond. “Well, all of my sisters are dead, so it would be nice to have one again.”

She began to backpedal when the 46 stopped smiling, but the look she gave was thoughtful instead of hurt. “Come to think of it, all of mine are probably dead too. Shall we make our own family then?”

And so it was.

A few weeks later, Daphne and Wendell finally met all but one of the other diesels on the region - a Class 28 named BoCo, Bear the Hymek, and Daisy, a deeply customized Class 101. According to Daisy, there was also a Class 01 named Mavis who worked on a private quarry at the end of her branch line.

“You know,” Daisy said after Delta finished introducing everyone. “Aside from having one of each power rating, I think all of us but Wendell would have been scrapped by now if we were on the mainland. I think we should do something to celebrate the fact that we aren’t dead.”

The other diesels agreed - word had already spread about Delta and Daphne’s nontraditional sisterhood - and they agreed to form a club: the Non-Standard Survivors Society.

“But, I’m not non-standard?” Wendell asked as they dispersed. “Am I?”

“No, but you are really cute,” Delta joked. “So we’ll give you a pass.”

Daisy chuckled as she headed for the platform. “I’ll have to remember that when I tell Mavis about this club she’s in now.”

Daphne was confused. “Cute? What do you mean cute?”

Wendell was similarly puzzled.

Bear and Delta looked at each other meaningfully. “You two have so much to learn...” The type 3 said as he backed into the station.

That didn’t make Daphne or Wendell feel any better!

1983  

“You know,” Said Delta one morning in the newly-refurbished diesel shed. “We should have nicknames for the society.”

“My name is Bear,” Said Bear. “yours is a Greek letter. How much more nickname-y can we get?”

“The rest of us should get nicknames then. And I feel like I could get a great nickname, like Tiger Stripes!”

Daphne giggled as Bear growled under his breath. “And why, pray tell, are you Tiger Stripes?”

“Because I’m fierce like a tiger! And I have stripes like a tiger does! It also matches the animal theme we’re going with.” Either Delta could think at a mile a minute, or she had been considering these nicknames for a lot longer than she let on.

“A tiger does not have stripes like you do.”

“How do you know?”

“My name is Bear. I know about animals. I have to.”

“I figured it was so that we could be ‘Lions, Tigers, and Bears, oh my!’” Quipped Daphne. “I guess that makes me Lion Stripes then.”

Delta’s sputtering and spluttering made it very clear that she hadn’t thought of that, and Bear and Daphne roared with laughter.

Later that year

The Thin Clergyman’s son made another trip to Sodor to research for his next books.

Daphne, as an express engine, had been rather removed from the strife among the rank-and-file engines caused by the Thin Clergyman’s books, and had no idea why Delta wanted to hide from him.

After a “short” explanation that took almost an hour, Daphne was now furious.

While she did help Delta by hiding her deep inside an old carriage shed, she did not stay there herself; She was an engine of action, and would deal with the problem directly.

Two days later, the Clergyman’s Son approached her to ask her some questions.

“If my sister shows up in one of your books you won’t survive to write another.” She said darkly to the author, who retreated immediately! 

The Clergyman’s Son’s next book focused about Diesels and James. Much to everyone’s amusement, Delta was nowhere to be found in it, despite her being being the biggest reason why James was more accepting of diesels.

Unsurprisingly, Daphne did not appear either, and everyone wondered if the story of the rude diesel who crashed through a wall was based on her in some way. Delta, on the other wheel, stayed uncharacteristically silent!

Wendell was most offended that they hadn’t even bothered to include his name in the book, and refused to speak to the Clergyman’s Son again!

1985

Bear and Wendell had both gotten very scruffy looking after several years without a repaint, and went into the works with the intent of coming out looking the same as they had before.

They had reckoned without Delta and Daphne, who had very kindly asked the paint shop workers to be imaginative on their friends.

Bear had rolled out first, looking furious about the deception, but rather pleased with his paint. The men had been inspired by some American locomotives, and he rolled out of the shop in a dark shade of green with metallic gold stripes down his sides.  Any lingering discontent he had felt lasted until Henry saw him for the first time and dragged him away behind a shed without a word. Daphne tried to ask what was going on, but Delta, laughing too hard to even speak, had pulled her away to the station.

Wendell came out a few days later. Whatever the men had originally tried hadn’t been to his liking, he explained, and he’d asked them to try a different design from the same book that they’d pulled Bear’s paint scheme from. When he came into the sheds painted a glossy black with grey and white stripes, Daphne felt both of her crankshafts do a flip-flop.

Delta took one look at the slack jawed expression on her adopted sister’s face and sighed deeply. How had Jamie seen this coming before she did?

It took all of a week for Bear and Wendell to have nicknames foisted on them by the express sisters - Ursus and Cobra stripes, respectively. Delta explained that she liked the predatory animal theme that went with Lion and Tiger, while Daphne innocently pointed out that it had absolutely nothing to do with how much it annoyed Bear.

The nicknames did eventually stick though, in no small part because Henry had taken one look at how irritated Bear was and started calling him Ursus!

It took a month after that for Tiger Stripes to take pity on her sister and the piteous faces she made when she thought Wendell wasn’t looking, pulled a Flying Scotsman, and told her and Cobra Stripes exactly what those feelings meant. She was very unsurprised when Wendell revealed that he was also growing attracted to Daphne.

Henry and James both joked that one day, Bear or Delta would put one of them through a wall, but three weeks later, Daphne managed to put herself and Wendell into the parking lot behind Barrow Sheds.

1990

After realizing that Mavis and Daisy both technically had stripes painted on them (making them Wasp and Cougar stripes), the other diesels began to seriously peer pressure BoCo into getting repainted with stripes so they could complete the set.

He’d held out for many years, but after Daphne took a special train to the clay pits, there was suddenly pressure from within the Brendam Branch as well, and he folded like a house of cards in less than a week.

When he came back from the works, he was now green, gold, and white, but also red, if you counted the angry blush on his face.

“I asked them for Southern Railway Green with a gold stripe.” He seethed. “But clearly there was a misunderstanding.”

The howling from his compatriots was earthshakingly unsympathetic, but nobody could deny that he looked striking, and he was quickly dubbed Jaguar Stripes, even though - as he and Bear were quick to note - he did not look like a Jaguar at all.

1995

James asked Delta to marry him. The other engines were overjoyed, even if they BoCo and Daisy needed some catching up on how exactly that was possible.

Daisy groaned. “Mavis and I are going to have to have a talk, aren’t we?”

The other diesels - which by this point included James and Henry in an honorary capacity - hadn’t quite processed that when BoCo announced that if he was being honest, he and Edward were “so emotionally codependent that we’ve probably been married for twenty years without realizing it.”

Henry couldn’t take it any more and screeched with laughter at the conversational disparities - he’d just left the steam sheds, where the engines were still unaware that London had multiple termini, and were therefore having a rousing argument as to whether the impending fall of British Rail meant that London’s terminus station would magically return to being King’s Cross or Paddington instead of the current Euston.

1996

James and Delta were wed in a quiet ceremony behind the diesel shed - Siobhan, her fiancé Declan, and all the members of the “Non Standard Society” - including Mavis, who traveled down specially for the event - were present, with Daphne and Henry acting as bridesmaid and best man.

By design, the engines had arrived in pairs, with only BoCo “going stag”, as he hadn’t yet told Edward how he felt. The officiant - a kind looking man from the Arlesburgh judiciary - had taken one look at the rest of them and asked if he should be preparing for any other weddings in the near future. Daphne and Wendell were the only ones to say yes instinctively. (Much to each other’s surprise!) When Daphne looked over at Bear and Henry, they said with no small amount of irritation that it wasn’t legal yet for them to be wed. Similar grumblings then erupted from Mavis and Daisy, which briefly made the quiet ceremony very loud, as none of the other engines had been aware that either diesel was dating!

2000

Dull yellow smoke billowed out of Percy’s funnel as the men did a pressure test. Before Daphne or Wendell could do anything, they were enveloped by the choking cloud. 

Daphne shut her eyes to avoid getting any of the strange metallic soot in her eyes, and when she opened them again, the works looked... different somehow. 

A few of the new inspection pits were gone, while the diesel shop building had one less door than it should. 

Daphne opened her mouth to ask Wendell what was going on, and then stopped dead in her tracks when a workman ran right through her. 

Looking down at herself, she appeared to be fully transparent, floating above the rails like a ghost of Deltics past. 

“Who are you?!” Wendell squeaked. 

Daphne looked at him for a moment. His paint was a different colour than it had been a minute ago - Rail Blue instead of Black and Gray - and he seemed like he didn’t remember her at all. 

“Cobra,” She said, not even thinking that this was not the time for nicknames. “It’s me, Lion. You know me.”

“I know exactly who you are.” He said frantically. “You’re the ghost of the engine I killed! It’s not Christmas! Begone with you!”

“What?!” Daphne was horrified. “Wendell, what on Earth are you talking about!? Nobody’s dead! How can you say that?!”

“Don’t you overreact here Lion!” Wendell snapped. “I should be the one screaming! Ignoring whatever it is you are, there are dinosaurs eating the ballast! That water tower has a face!”

Daphne suddenly understood that there was something in the yellow smoke that was making both of them see things that weren’t there. With that in mind, she spent most of the next few hours keeping Wendell calm until the hallucinations stopped, and he turned back into the black and gray diesel she’d fallen in love with.  

A few weeks later, and Daphne asked Wendell about what he saw in the yellow smoke. 

“I saw a bunch of brightly coloured horses singing about friendship. Why?”

“Just curious...” Daphne said as she realized that maybe her hallucinations had been much stronger than she thought!

Later That Same Year

A new high speed trainset arrived on Sodor. Their names were Pip and Emma.

They had been on the island once before in the early 80′s, but somehow none of the diesels had met them in anything other than passing.

After three nights on Sodor, Delta declared that she liked them and was “keeping them”, giving them no choice in the matter on the subject of express engine sisterhood. Daphne explained that Delta was less of an engine and more of a force of nature, to which Emma responded that she and Pip were ‘the Dragon Sisters’ and could take care of themselves.

Both Dragons realized that they had even less of a choice when Daphne's face lit up like a Christmas tree upon hearing that!

Learning that the duo already had animal-themed nicknames for themselves made it much easier for Lion and Tiger Stripes to press-gang their new sisters into the “Non-Standard Survivors Society”, and even easier to get them painted into the old Intercity “Swallow” paint scheme.

Even for express locomotives, the speed at which the two went from Pip and Emma to Dragon Stripes was remarkable.

Even later that same year

Donald screamed all the way to the Little Western, unable to shake the image of a unified force of Red Eyed, Soul Stealing, Mind Controlling, Memory Altering, Diesel Electric Monsters!

2001

Pip and Emma taught the other diesels how to breathe fire.

Being the sort of sisters that they were, Daphne, Emma, Pip, and Delta soon began hosting competitions to see who could shoot fire the furthest. This did not help Oliver’s mental state at all.

2004

The United Kingdom allowed same-sex couples to enter into a “civil union” on the 14th of March. The engines knew it wasn’t actual marriage, but it was more than they’d been allowed before, and Daisy and Mavis, and Henry and Bear were wed by The Magistrate that night, with Delta and James acting as best man and bride/groomsmaid in all the ceremonies.

Immediately afterwards, Daphne and Wendell - who had agreed not to be wed until their friends could - tied the knot as well.

The rest of the Society (BoCo, Pip, Emma) and Siobhan and her husband Declan cheered until they were hoarse.

The next morning, Stephen and Richard Hatt, as well as most of the steam engines, could not understand how every James, Henry, and every diesel on the island were somehow exhausted and happy at the same time.

Later that same year

Flying Scotsman showed up on what would turn out to be his last railtour before his overhaul. Not realizing what he’d started way back in 1979, he jokingly asked if Henry and Bear had ever done anything in regards to their relationship.

When they and seemingly every other diesel on the Island regaled him with wedding stories he almost burst a boiler tube!

2007

Pip managed to convince the paint shop staff to paint huge fire breathing dragons on herself and Emma for Christmas.

Within two weeks all the other diesels had their own respective animals painted somewhere on their bodies.

After a while, they all started to notice that the animals seemed to be in different places on different days... Daphne's Lion and Wendell's Cobra would even swap locomotives sometimes - not that they'd ever admit it!

After an even longer while they noticed that an identical Bear and Tiger had ended up on Henry and James - despite neither of them having gone near the paint shop in months!

Richard Hatt has asked why this happened, but nobody has yet said anything close to the truth. It may be because they don’t know themselves...

2017

A certain Class 5 diesel convinced her driver to hang some mistletoe over the turntable.

Everything was going well until Donald chuffed in unexpectedly and saw Henry and Bear under it.

A lot of explaining was required.

2020

Wendell loved Christmas, and had spent every year since the early 90′s covered in lights and pulling the N.W.R.’s holiday train. In more recent years Daphne also joined him, and they usually spent a few days in the first or second week of January getting the lights removed and their paint touched up.

This year, heavy traffic in early January meant that they couldn’t make it to the works until late on the 28th, and spent all of the next day getting de-lighted and touched up. They went to sleep eager to go to work the next morning...

January 30, 2020

Wendell woke up with a start. What a dream that was! It felt so realistic, and...

55 010 was staring at him, eyes wide to the point of bulging out of her face.

“What?” He asked, trying to shake off the feeling of strangeness - in his dream, they were married, but engines can’t get married - can they?

“Wendell,” She said quietly, her voice shaking. “I just had the most amazing dream.”

“Really?” Maybe they could compare notes, Wendell wondered. Maybe in her dream they were all brightly coloured crime fighting action heroes.

“We were married.” She said after a moment.

Wendell felt the world go fuzzy around him. The last thirty-nine years of his life flashed before his eyes in some sort of visual stereo - one side sad and depressed, the other side...

“Daphne?!” He gasped as he returned to reality.

That was all the confirmation the big Deltic needed. “It wasn’t a dream!” She cried joyously.

“It was,” Wendell said, his brows furrowing under a sudden and massive headache. “But it wasn’t. How can it be both?”

“I don’t know and I don’t care.” Daphne/55 010 said, her voice laced with quiet joy. “I have sisters. I have a family. I have you.”

Wendell could feel his mind short circuiting. On one wheel, he was in his shed in the works. It was his home. He’d lived here since the 80′s!

On the other... He lived at the diesel shed in Tidmouth. He’d asked The Fat Controller in 1982 if he could stay there so he could be with his friends - with Daphne. His home was the road between Daphne and Bear in Tidmouth.

Bear. His eyes widened as he thought of the Hymek.

He didn’t know the diesel that well, but - he did. Did he? Was this all a shared dream between him and 010, or was Bear really Henry’s husband? Were Delta and James married? What about Daisy and Mavis? Was 010 actually Daphne? He didn’t know what was real or not anymore.

He looked back at Daphne/010. As much as he wanted to believe it was true - that he really did have thirty years of family and love - but as he looked over at the Deltic and down at his own buffers, he didn’t see the blue-and-gold or black-and-gray of Lion and Cobra Stripes, just the basic Rail Blue of two anonymous British Diesels.

Then...

As he looked at 010/Daphne, her dark blue paint started to muddy and shift before his eyes. Starting at her buffers and moving backwards, a ripple of colour began to work its way across her body. The rail blue and yellow warning panels faded away, leaving a trail of sky blue paint and metallic gold stripes. A roaring lion, standing atop a crushed double arrow, appeared below her cab window.

He would have watched the transformation in more detail, but a sudden and intense itching caused his him to look down at his own body. Where there had previously been blue and yellow was now a dark gloss black with grey stripes. The very hint of a snake's tail could be seen stretching around the corner of his bodywork.

It was over almost as quickly as it begun, and when the two diesels looked back up at each other, they didn’t see Wendell and 55 010, they saw:

“Lion?”

“Cobra?”

The drivers who went to take Wendell and 010 back to the works had no idea why the diesels were crying like babies, but assumed it was due to the outrageous paint schemes the works had elected to cover them in. They were in no mood for shenanigans, and coupled up the engines and left before the works staff could notice and ask questions.  

In a remarkable parallel to the 1981 of their dreams, Wendell hauled an unpowered Daphne and a rake of coaches from the works down to Tidmouth in the predawn light of winter. They passed Abbey, who shouted hello from the electric branch, and passed Edward, who stared at their paint in utter bafflement.

The train arrived in Tidmouth, but there was no Fat Controller to meet them that day, so they left the coaches at the platform for The Limited and departed for the diesel shed.

Wendell felt another headache come on as he rolled up to the concrete-and-steel structure. With only Bear and Delta permanently in Tidmouth, The Fat Controller hadn’t built the shed until Pip and Emma arrived in 2000, knocking down an old brick warehouse to do so.

But, with Daphne and Wendell, that old brick building had been spruced up and expanded in the 80′s. Looking at the building, Wendell felt woozy as his mind layered an image of the cozy warehouse overtop of the sleek shed.

“There’s supposed to be windows there.” Daphne whispered as she looked at the blank wall of the shed.  

Wendell grimaced as he looked up. That blank concrete wall was in no way special, but at the same time, the light that streamed in through bank of windows set into the brick had been the source of many arguments - nobody wanted to be the one in that road because the morning sun was at just the right angle to shine into the eyes of whoever was parked under them.

But that wall was blank specifically because the architects had realized that - in 1999.

But it was an old shed - from the 1920's, right?

Wendell grimaced and hoped that his mind would pick something and stick to it.

Arriving in the shed to the sound of Genesis drifting through the doors - dream or no dream, Henry had apparently still infected them with his prog rock obsession - the men first shunted Daphne onto one road before putting Wendell next to her,  powering off off his motor and scarpering to the staff canteen and its coffee maker, leaving the two diesels outside.

Their presence was noticed after Bear’s voice drifted out of the shed with a command to turn off the voice activated speaker. In the silence, the quiet pinging of Wendell’s cooling engine was heard, drawing eyes to the outside.

“What the hell are you painted like that for?” Called BoCo from inside the sheds. “And who are you?” He asked Daphne.

“Hi Jaguar, it’s so good to see you.” Daphne evidently did not care that BoCo had no idea who she was.

“Good morning!” Said Wendell, trying to figure out how on earth he was going to explain this. “We had a doozy of a dream last night!”

The other diesels poked out of the doors to gawp at the oddly-painted engines.

Delta in particular looked like she wanted to say something, looking down at her own stripes before looking at Daphne’s.

“You look like you could be my big... sister...” She didn’t make it all the way through her sentence before her jaw dropped and her eyes glazed over. Wendell imagined that this is what he looked like earlier that morning.

“You...” Delta was on the verge of tears. “You were at my wedding. You all were!”

“Your what? You know this engine?” BoCo was more confused than ever.

“Yes! And so do you! We all do!”

“Delta, I have never... met...” BoCo stared in shock after his eyes glazed over for a long moment. “Oh soot and oil... Daphne?!”

And so it went through the other engines, who all suddenly remembered.

“How?!” Bear eventually managed. “How did this - what?”

He was cut off as his paint rippled and changed, an effect that quickly rolled across the other engines. From within the shed, Emma and Pip swore loudly as their NWExpress livery roiled and shifted from blue and yellow to black, white and red. BoCo grimaced as his BR green suddenly became a lot more American. Bear grinned unconsciously, suddenly remembering how well Henry had taken his stripes last time.

Within a few minutes, the disparate group of diesels were gone, replaced with the members of the Non-Standard Survivors Society.

Daphne, who watching this happen with no small amount of glee, squealed with happiness.

In the station, Henry and Daisy were congratulating Richard Hatt on his recent promotion to assistant controller of the railway. As they spoke, both engines kept one eye on the diesel shed in the distance - two new diesels in some absolutely ludicrous paint schemes were parked in front of the diesel shed, and a commotion was quietly audible, much to their consternation.

Richard eventually took notice of the new engines as well, and took a long moment to try and figure out why the original Deltic prototype was on his railway. A gasp drew him back to the engines on the platform, both of whom now looked like they’d seen a ghost.

“Are you all right?” he asked with concern.

Daisy, who was wide eyed and shaking on her suspension, was the first to react. “I’m married!” She shrieked before setting off for the junction almost before her signal dropped. Richard wasn’t sure, but as Daisy left, frantically blowing her horn to the diesels in the yard as she did so, she seemed to shimmer in the sun for a moment.

“What?” Richard asked. He thought he’d heard what Daisy had said, but was really hoping that he’d misheard her. He looked back at Henry, suddenly forced to remember that he had to give the engine a day off every March.

“I don’t think I could explain that to you if I had all day.” Henry said quietly.

Richard wanted to investigate the sudden faraway look in the engine’s eyes, but remembered what usually happened to him when he asked the engines personal questions.

As he left the platform, he noted with some amount of confusion the elegantly-painted bear that was on Henry’s cab side. It definitely hadn’t been there when he walked up.

He turned around to ask Henry about it, when James raced into the station, a wild look in his eyes.

“Henry!” He demanded. “What just happened to me?!” The pouncing Tiger painted on the side of his tender gave some idea as to the “what” he was talking about.

Richard turned and fled for his office. The pub didn’t open until noon, and he was not about to deal with any new earthshattering revelations sober.

Wait why shouldn't people walk their dogs off the lead? How is that bad?

I'm tired and not in the best mood so I apologize if this answer seems temperamental.

Dogs are unpredictable unless they've been extensively and daily trained since puppy-hood. The only dog I have ever met who was a genuinely harmless dog was one who had been trained every day for 5 years as to how to interact with people, dogs, cats, and their environment appropriately. Your dog may be the sweetest and most harmless baby in the world at home, but the outside world is a different place. If you haven't trained your dog to handle outside stimulus, you cannot assume they're fine to walk leash-less at all times.

I'm not going to recount each story in depth, but every member of my family has been chased, bitten, or jumped on by dogs walking along trails or sidewalks off the leash. We did nothing to provoke them, we just walked/jogged by minding our business. My mom's friend recently just had to take her puppy to the PICU where he was on oxygen and needed intensive surgical intervention to save his life after he was mauled by a dog walking leash-less on a trail. Again, he did nothing to provoke this dog. He was walking along, on a leash, when a leash-less dog attacked him.

I have a dozen other stories of people being harassed by dogs who aren't on a leash. In all of them, there's a running theme of the dog owner in question being absolutely shocked that their dog would do such a thing, and then being defensive if confronted about the lack of a leash. "They aren't normally aggressive," "they've never done this before," "you probably agitated them" ad infinitum. I've heard it all. But at the end of the day it's the critical error of a dog owner who believed their dog could do no harm.

I personally have a phobia of big dogs which stems directly from when I was attacked by one as a kid (and by phobia I mean if I'm in the same room as a dog bigger than a golden retriever or lab, I start hyperventilating). I was playing in a park with my sister at the time. I didn't even see the dog until it had knocked me to the ground and bit my coat sleeve. I'm lucky it didn't make contact with my arm and that the owner grabbed it off of me before it did anything worse. So if I see you allowing your dog, especially a large one, to walk through public trails or parks without a leash, and I know your dog is untrained, I do not trust you to be a responsible dog owner.

All in all, leash laws exist for a very specific and valid reason. Obey them, unless you're absolutely sure you have thoroughly trained your dog to handle outdoor stimulus appropriately.

Yknow... Ted Cruz fleeing Texas to go to his beach house in Cancún really just sums everything up, doesn't it? The people aren't responsible for this. State officials had been told SINCE THE 1980s that they needed to fortify the Texas power grid against the cold, and it never happened. A massive midwinter outage like this happened in the 90s. And again in 2011. And now again. Texans are not responsible for this, but they are suffering for it. Dying for it. Meanwhile the people who are responsible just hop on the next flight to Cancún without a care in the world, and leave the emergency response to specific district house representatives AND A NEW YORK STATE SENATOR. Anyways.

01. What is their favorite food? Overall, she prefers fruity sweets like baked apples. She especially likes anything cinnamon flavored. If desserts don’t count, then a fish stew.

02. Do they have a fear of an animal? If so, what animal? Not really. Unless the animals are corrupted somehow.

03. What do they wear to bed? Pants and a loose long sleeved shirt. Might layer a nightdress underneath for extra warmth.

04. Do they like cuddling? She’d be caught dead before admitting it to anyone, but yes and that says a lot.

05. Do they have a secret handshake with anyone? She prefers absurd questions or phrases, to identify people in disguise.

06. What do they look like? She has pitch black skin and hair. Her eyes have a silver iris and she is usually shrouded in darkness.

08. What are their good and bad traits? Her good trait is her empathy, for most things living. Her bad trait is her stubbornness.

She doesn’t really recall them anymore, besides her little sister who she still thinks about from time to time. Her found family she is quiet close to, despite all of them having their own paths in life.

i dunno

that was definitely a special and important episode, and i appreciated seeing this side of john, this is gonna make it way easier to write fanfic of him without the story ending up as a trauma survival fic

but

i was kind of underwhelmed

things i rEALLY REALLY WANTED that didn’t happen:

john actually reacting to dean saying they made friends with an angel (and a werewolf, a vampire, demons, etc etc)

john meeting cas

cas being part of that family meal (i get that the point was he was 2003!cas and not there, but still)

jack being in this even a little bit??

and as the story went on and reached the end, what it really lacked, for me, was a comparison where we can then see how john/mary & max/her crush = dean/cas...........and that just didn’t happen

i think it just ended too soon, really

and there was a lot more they could’ve done with the altered timeline, could’ve brought a whooooooooole lot back from past seasons and just made it a smorgasbord of nostalgia

i get that it was focused solely on john, which gave it an emotional core, so there’s not actually a problem there, i loved that

but it felt kind of dull and slow and....... soupy..........?

(i just mean. the emotional feeling in my brain as i think about it. feels like soup. specifically pumpkin soup. warm and spicy and goopy and nutritious but ultimately not very filling)

then again, if the pacing had been sped up, i would’ve complained it was too rushed. so there’s no winning, it was probably fine ?

i think my favourite part was the kids. i loved the kids. i love the lil gay romance going there. i loved the fact it was a destiel/team free will parallel (even if that part of it was OVER SO DAMN QUICKLY MOST PEOPLE MISSED IT). i loved the kid in the hat, he reminded me a lot of the actor thomas brodie-sangster, and also johnathan byers from “stranger things”

also enjoyed sam vs. the serial killer clown, and that whole aspect of hunting that we haven’t seen in a while, felt very nostalgic

also enjoyed 2003!cas, but was both distressed and frustrated by him fighting dean and then NOT GETTING ANY CLOSURE ON THAT WHATSOEVER. the point was to make dean and sam realise they really needed to send john back, so essentially, in some respect, they did choose cas being their friend over john being around, but that part of the overall problem was never mentioned at all, cas wasn’t mentioned at all after the fight

i’m just looking forward to coda fics that start where this episode leaves off, and dean talks to cas, because i am craving that SO FUCKING BADLY i can’t even express. like. it’s becoming maddening. i just. want. them. to have. a conversation

and the black guy dying at the start?? and the other black kid running away from the ghost and never being seen again? and besides the unnamed diner guy offering info on skip day, being the ONLY PEOPLE OF COLOUR IN THE ENTIRE STORY??? NOT COOL, not a fan >:{ (still better than it used to be, but soooooooooo many white people. so many. so. many)

anyway. um

so that wasn’t my favourite episode, but not because it was bad, but because it didn’t live up to expectations. i tried not to have any expectations (i really tried) but there were just... basic things this episode needed that i felt it was lacking (*cough* cas *cough*), and i can’t really shake that feeling

HOWEVER, having seen 2003!cas be the thoughtless drone that he was, i can appreciate just HOW MUCH character development has happened while he’s been around, which.... i suppose, is a sort of nod to his entire existence ???

anyway, 9/10, and a big ol shrug

but yeah. seeing john be kind and understanding was amazing (and completely changes how i’m gonna write him in my fics in the future, since he’s probably gonna be in the fic instead of just mentioned) and having him say he’s proud of dean and he loves him was just a super nice treat c:

sam being emotional is the best, too. sam confronting his feelings 10/10

i just. i want aaaaaall of this. but with cas. i really want that. so goddamn much. ;~;

Everything you want to do today, I’m on board.” He leaned over Liam, the young Alpha caged between his arms, and curiously looked at him. “So, what are we doing today?” “Uhm, I don’t have that many plans aside from having drinks with the rest of the core pack tonight. Having a nice breakfast, going for a long run, probably with the dogs, and maybe play some video games, that’s all I can think of at the moment.” Liam shrugged and already when he said those words, he could see Theo didn’t like them. “What now? What did I say?” “Those aren’t special plans.” Theo sounded almost accusingly. 

Liam frowned and sat up fully, forcing Theo to sip up fully as well if he didn’t want them to literally butt heads. “What’s the matter? We didn’t do those many special activities on your birthday as well.” “You surprised me with this little birthday party and we mated. Also, it was Thanksgiving and we were at the lake. That was special itself,” Theo stubbornly replied. “I want you to have a special birthday as well. I owe you that!” “Okay, we need to talk about this.” Liam shook his head. “Theo, we don’t add these things up. We don’t have a I-gave-you-this-present-so-you-need-to-get-me-an-even-bigger-one relationship. It’s not like we reckon up what one gave the other or which things we did on birthdays, anniversaries, or on Christmas, it doesn’t have to be better and more special every year. I don’t care if your presents are self-made or store-bought, it only matters that you care. You guys surprised me with cake and a birthday song and I felt special because of that. This is the most important thing. Gifts are nice, sure, but what matters the most is that the person knows people care about them. No matter what gifts I get or what we do. Okay?”

Theo chewed on his lower lip and stubbornly refused to look at Liam until the younger took his face and turned his head so Theo had to look at him. The raw feelings displayed in the green eyes of his lover made Liam’s stomach flip. “I just want to make sure you have the best birthday. It’s your first birthday as my boyfriend, I wanted this to be extra special.” “It is special. Because I have you with me. And all the others. You don’t have to put so much pressure on yourself, baby. It will be a great day, even if we just stay home and eat pizza.” Liam pressed his lips to Theo’s in a loving kiss. “Okay?”, he asked afterward and Theo hesitated at first but then nodded.  “Okay.” He kissed Liam again.  "Good.” Liam smiled when they parted again. An idea hit him. “But you know what? Maybe I do want to do something else today. I think I want to go to the zoo.” “The zoo?” Theo looked surprised.  “Yeah. We’ve been living in Seattle for a while but we never visited the zoo. I can’t remember when I last visited a zoo. A normal zoo, where living animals are. Will you go with me? Have a little zoo date? I’m sure this will be fun.” “Hm.” Theo scratched his chin. “It’s not like I could really say no to the Birthday Boy, right?” Liam shook his head. “Nope, you can’t.” He laughed and then got out of bed, extended his hand for Theo to take. “Now, I remember you saying something about showers. I think we should save water and have one together.” He wriggled his fingers and Theo smirked and grabbed the hand. 

****** When they finally made their way downstairs into the kitchen after they showered and got dressed, the Betas were already gathered there and ate their breakfast. They happily greeted Liam and wished him Happy Birthday again and Lori fixed them two plates of eggs and bacon as well. 

“So, Lee, plans for today?” Mason asked curiously and looked over the top of his coffee mug.  “Theo and I just talked about it. I may be twenty now but there is something I haven’t done in a long time. I’d like to visit the zoo today. So, we’re going to the zoo.” “The zoo?” Brett sounded incredulous. “Really?” “Yeah, why not?” Liam saw no problem with that and sipped his orange juice. “The last time I visited a real zoo, with animals and such, was years ago. I think it will be a cool way to spend the day until we go for drinks tonight.”  “I’m not the biggest fan of zoos but I know the zoo here in Seattle does a lot of things to help endangered species, that is good.” Maya chimed in and nodded in approval.  “I think a day at the zoo will be just awesome.” Lori smiled warmly at Liam and Theo and Liam smiled back. Lori had this effect on people, she was honest and kind, you had to like her and smile in her general vicinity.  “I think so too, Lori,” he agreed and then Liam dug into his breakfast, just like Theo did next to him.

After breakfast, the couple only returned to their room to grab their wallets and phones and then Liam slid down the handrail, just because he could. Being twenty didn’t mean he had to act mature all the time. Theo saw it and shook his head with a fond smile on his face.  “Don’t act like you don’t like my childlike side,” Liam called out and grinned. Theo just snorted but the loving look in his eyes gave away how he really felt. He couldn’t fool Liam anymore.  They walked into the garage where Lori, Brett, Tim, and Nolan were waiting for whatever reason. Liam frowned. “Where is my car?” He questioned since only Theo’s car was parked in the garage. The garage door was open so Liam could see his car wasn’t in the driveway either.  “Oh, the others took it since they had to refuel the tank. They’ll meet us there,” Nolan explained and Liam stared at him. “Meet you where?” “At the zoo, silly.” Lori giggled and then climbed into the truck, just like the others.  Liam gripped Theo’s arm when the realization hit him. “Tell me this is not happening,” he ordered his boyfriend and blinked at Theo. “Tell me, please!” Theo just made an apologetic face and raised a shoulder. Of course, he wouldn’t tell Liam this was not happening. He would not lie to Liam. “You have to say something, I’m afraid. It’s your birthday and you’re the Alpha.” He made a hand motion towards the truck but looked as unsure as Liam felt.  Tim poked his head out of the window. “Come on, what are you waiting for?” He retreated back into the car and Liam frowned. “I can’t tell them! Look how excited they are!” He hissed and stared wide-eyed at Theo. “And the others are already on their way to the zoo!” “I know,” Theo said and frowned as well. “Maybe we catch them before we enter the zoo?” “Guys, Mason sent me a text. Traffic was not as bad expected so they are already there. He got tickets for all of us,” Nolan yelled and Liam sighed heavily. Great. “Okay, let’s go,” he muttered defeated and walked to the passenger seat of the truck.

****** Mason had been right, traffic wasn’t that bad and they arrived relatively fast at the zoo. The parking lot wasn’t crowded as well, Liam guessed this was a good sign there wouldn’t be too many people in the zoo. That was something, right? “There are the others.” Brett pointed at the small group next to the pay booth. When Mason spotted them, he waved the tickets in the air.

“You finally made it!” “Yeah, we made it.” Liam was still not sure what to make out of the current situation. It seemingly showed on his face because Mason nudged him. “What happened to your enthusiasm from before? Be happy, we’re at the zoo.” “Oh, I am happy to be at the zoo.” Liam made a face and Mason scoffed. “Could have fooled me. You look like you’re in pain. It was your idea we go to the zoo.” “Really? Was it?” Liam snapped back. “Did I ever utter the words we all go?” Stunned silence. It was Lori who caught up first. “Oh my god. Guys, I think Liam’s we didn’t include the whole pack, more only Theo and him. Oh, I’m so sorry.” She pressed both hands against her mouth in shock. Finally, it clicked for everyone else. “We are really crashing your date right now?” “Yeah, well…” Theo didn’t finish his sentence and just let the end hanging in the air. It was clear what he meant anyway. “Why didn’t you say something? I don’t understand.” Mason shook his head. “When should I have said something? It didn’t occur to me you all were tagging along until we got into the garage. At that point, you had already taken off,” Liam stated matter-of-factly and Mason made a rueful face. “I’m sorry, Lee. Look, we’re leaving you two alone and meet you back at the house later. Have fun at the zoo.” But Liam shook his head. “That’s bullshit, you already bought the tickets. It is what it is now. Let’s all have a fun day at the zoo.” “Okay, we all go but we get out of your hair and let you have some time alone,” Sadie said and prompted her fellow pack mates to nod. Liam sighed. As chaotic as his Betas were, he loved them and could not really be mad at them.

Theo smiled at him and took his hand when they passed the entrance and stepped into the zoo. Right next to the entrance was a big map of the zoo and Liam pulled Theo over to search for the best route to see all animals. “We should go right and then walk this round, so we can circle the whole area.” He pointed at different points on the map while he talked and Theo hummed in confirmation. “If you go right, we go left. Enjoy your date!” Sadie decided for the group and then proceeded to herd the other Betas away from the Alpha couple. Liam watched them leave and sighed. “I’m getting a headache.” “No, puppy, it’s your birthday. You should enjoy it. Come on, there are some monkeys waiting for us.”

Theo simply dragged him into the direction Liam chose for them and Liam let himself be dragged until he finally walked next to Theo and looked around. “But seriously, this pack.” “With how chaotic we all are, it was bound to happen.” “Seriously?” Liam didn’t really share this mindset but Theo nodded. “Yeah. Think about it. The Betas crashing one of our dates, this is typical for this pack.” The longer Liam thought about it, the more he found he shared Theo’s opinion. The couple looked at each other and then both started laughing. Some people gave them funny looks but Liam and Theo paid them no mind. When they finally calmed down, Liam tugged at Theo’s hand in a way better mood than before. “Come on, time to pay the animals a visit.”

The first animals they came across were monkeys and Liam and Theo stopped for a while to watch them play, climb the trees, eat, and tease each other. “Brett’s favorite animals are monkeys if I remember correctly.” Liam leaned on the banister and watched a mother monkey tending to her young. “You know Brett’s favorite animals?” Theo asked, clearly amused by this. “I had a crush on him once. You remember things about your crush because you pay close attention. I learned many things about you as well that way.” “Oh? Like what?” “How much you love blueberry pancakes and muffins. I noticed how you always munched them when mom made them for breakfast. Or that your favorite shoes are your white Converse, which – to be real – is not that hard to notice.” He glanced at Theo’s feet. Like expected, his boyfriend wore the white shoes right now. “They’re comfortable.” Theo shrugged. “I always wondered how you managed to keep them that white with everything we do and fight. Blood, dirt, it’s a miracle.” “I clean them religiously,” Theo answered dryly. “Idiot,” Liam said fondly and the couple walked to the next compound.

****** They wandered from compound to compound and watched the various animals while they talked about various topics. The sun was shining in the blue sky and Liam relaxed and soaked up the warmth. He was glad he had decided against wearing a jacket and just kept it to a simple t-shirt. Theo also had left his jacket in the car and thus displayed how well he filled out his olive green tee.

After passing several compounds, the couple sat on a bench and just enjoyed the sun. Liam had his head tilted back and watched the clouds. “I never got the fascination with cloud-gazing,” Theo muttered next to him and tilted his own head back to watch the puffy clouds. “I never did this as a kid.” “You never…Seriously?” Liam could not believe this and turned his head to look at Theo rather than the sky. Theo shrugged and looked at Liam as well before he shrugged again. “Yeah. What’s the use, especially if you don’t have anyone to exchange with what you see?” “You were a strange boy, Theo Raeken.” He shook his head. “I had other interests. Stars, I liked. The cosmos. So stargazing was a thing for me but not clouds.” Liam chuckled. “I bet you hid under the blankets late at night, when you were supposed to sleep, had your little flashlight and read all those books about the cosmos and the Milky Way…No, that was me with history books. But I bet you had one of those lamps casting stars and planets in different colors on the wall and when you laid in bed during the night, you loved to watch the lights change colors and marveled at the various planets, imagined you would travel there one day.” Theo shook his head in wonder. “That’s exactly what happened. How did you know that?” He looked absolutely stunned. “I was right? Oh my god, that is amazing! Let me try another one!” Liam squinted his eyes while he assessed Theo and tried to come up with something. “You played Little League. Your jersey number was…7.” Theo smiled and shook his head. “22.” “Dammit! Okay, give me another try!” “Nope, it’s my turn now,” Theo demanded. He scratched his chin and pondered on what he could say. “You had a stuffed animal and it was a penguin.” “No.” Liam laughed. “It was a giraffe and his name was Dots. Mom still has him around somewhere.” “Aw, that’s precious, Lee.” “Shut up. Bet you had a stuffed animal as well. Maybe a lion?” Theo shook his head again. “I had a plush fish from a trip to the aquarium. Looked like that Dori fish from Nemo and his name was Nighty.” “Oh my god, and you’re calling me precious, Theo?”

Liam looked around. “Don’t they have an aquarium around here? Let’s visit this next.” “We don’t have to, really. Can stay here a little longer, Liam.” “I want to see fishes now. And maybe buy you a little plush fish from the zoo store later on.” He got up from the bench and wandered over to another map to see where to go from here. “You’re not buying me a stuffed animal!” Theo called after him but Liam ignored him. “I do as I please. That way!” He pointed left. Theo acted like this was a chore and groaned when he got to his feet. “Why do I bother with you?” “Because I have you wrapped around my little finger.” Liam saw no problem with that and grinned proudly. Theo said nothing but when he finally reached Liam, he simply pulled him in and pressed a kiss to his cheek. A simple act of affection and yet it held so much for Liam. Theo was just as in love with him as Liam was with Theo and though they teased each other, being around each other wasn’t a burden.

“Hey, look, there are the others.” Theo had spotted their group and pointed at them sitting on benches in front of the aquarium. “Hey guys,” Liam greeted when the couple stepped up to them. “Oh, hi, do you guys want to visit the aquarium? We wanted to but we can do something else, so we don’t disturb you,” Nolan said hastily, already about to jump to his feet again. Liam chortled. His Betas obviously were serious about not disturbing his and Theo’s date. “Guys, relax. This is silly. Yes, it was supposed to be a date but we came here all together so we can walk together now. Right, Theo?” Theo nodded. “We had some alone time and I learned some things about Liam. I would love to meet Dots one day, by the way.” “If you let me buy you a replacement for Nighty,” Liam replied without missing a beat and Theo smirked. “Deal.”

“Whoever Dots and Nighty are, I’d love to walk inside the aquarium and out of the sun for a while. I love getting tan but this gets too hot right now.” Brett took off his sunglasses and hang them at the front of his tank top. He had sat in front of the benches, leaned back on his palms, and Liam extended his hand to help him to his feet. It gave the signal for everyone else to get up and together they made their way into the building. 

Just like Brett had said, the building was cooler than outside, a welcomed change to the burning sun. Liam loved the warmth but even he had to admit, running around all day when the sun was beating down – especially as a werewolf – made you run hot. He sighed when he entered the dimly lit place. “Nice, hm?” Brett appeared to Liam’s right and looked around. “I always liked to visit an aquarium. There is something mysterious about the sea and it also has something peaceful to watch the water and the fishes.” “Peaceful it is,” Liam agreed. “Feels like a different part of the world.” “But not in a bad way. It’s a like a little break. Gives me time to think.”

The two of them wandered down the halls, looked through various windows and watched the animals in the tanks while they talked. “Are you still feeling lost?” It was important for Liam to know so he could help Brett. “I’m still figuring out what I want my place in life to be. Coming back from the dead made me realize I never really had a goal after high school. I was just hanging by for graduation and then maybe college. I now got the chance of a new start and so I can find other ways to live a fulfilling life. I just have to figure out what I want.” “Any vague idea of what you want already? I get what you’re saying. I thought getting my major in history is exactly what I wanted to do but now I realized I want to do something different with my life. Theo and I will open our own bakery and coffee shop after graduation, so I’m still finishing my history degree but also taking some business classes. I’m excited about what this future will hold but it took me a long time to get there.” Brett looked at a swarm of colorful fishes and hummed. “That’s something I want. Not the bakery, the relationship. You two seem so happy with each other and I wish that for me as well.” He sighed. “But the thought of me being in a relationship right now seems absurd. I have so much on my plate, I don’t need to drag another person into this mess.” “Let me tell you one thing about love: It comes when you least expect it. When I realized my feelings for Theo as what they were, I was stunned. I had a lot on my mind, high school graduation, college applications, the supernatural things, the last thing I needed were feelings for someone I could never have. But that didn’t stop me from falling deeper and deeper. Love is not rational, so it surely won’t cooperate with your current situation. Maybe it can help you with your current state, you know? Having a partner anchors you, not only us weres. Corey anchors Mason, I know that.”  Liam smiled at Brett and squeezed his shoulder. Having someone by your side gave you immense strength, Liam himself experienced this over and over again with Theo and he thanked the heavens for it. Not only was Theo his anchor but also his rock. Together, Liam felt like they could take on whatever the world had in store for them.

He was so lost in thoughts, he had not registered Brett talking to him until the other nudged his shoulder. “Earth to Liam, are you with me?” “Huh? Sorry, Brett, I was….” “Dreaming about your mate?” Liam blushed. “Kinda.” Brett scoffed playfully and shook his head. “I should be mad about getting ignored but I will be damned if happiness is not a good look on you. You’re so sickly in love, it’s almost unreal. Everyone else ceases to exist for you when you’re in love. Theo’s a really lucky guy to have you.” Liam looked over to the other side of the room where Theo inspected the same species of fishes Nighty had been. “I’m also incredibly lucky to have him.” He focused on Brett again. “And I’m sure you will find somebody as amazing for you. You’re a great guy, Brett, don’t forget that.” Lori appeared next to Brett. “Stop telling my brother he’s great, will make his head even bigger than it already is.” “Hey, that man is just stating facts, sis. Let him speak the truth.” Brett pulled his sister in a loose headlock and she squeaked and tried to weasel her way out. Liam laughed. It was good to see Brett slowly coming back to his old ways. He had cursed Brett out quite often since meeting him for the first time but he also wanted his friend to get his carefree attitude back. They all left something of their soul in the supernatural fight, Liam had realized that years ago, but they still could overcome most of the trauma. Brett surely deserved it.

****** Spending a day at the zoo - only interrupted by calls from Liam’s parents and the council singing Happy Birthday for Liam and wishing him the best-  had put everyone in a good mood and when they had come home, showered, and changed clothes to go for the promised drinks that night, they were joking around and laughing on their way to the bar. While Liam wanted to celebrate his birthday, he was not in the mood to go clubbing and so had decided on a cozy pub near the city center. Drinks were good and had fair prices for college students and there were pool and darts.

“Round one’s on me,” Theo announced while they stepped into the pub. Liam glanced at him.  “You really don’t have to. What you make at the coffee shop is not that much, to begin with, save your money.”  Theo took his face in both hands. “Puppy, stop worrying. I want to buy the first round. It’s okay, I won’t be living in the streets afterward.” He kissed Liam to stop any further argument. It was an unfair tactic but Liam had to admit, it worked.  He therefore just grumbled but then let Theo be generous. The rest of the core pack had watched their little exchange with amusement and now told Theo what they wanted to drink. For the first round, they all mostly stuck to beer. The twenty-two-year-old looked at Liam. “A beer for you as well?” His glance turned calculating. “Or still feel like something will happen and you need a clear mind to protect us?” Liam had not really paid attention to this feeling for a while now and when Theo mentioned it, he had to search within his mind for a while but came up with nothing. “I actually don’t. It stopped when we found Brett and Lori,” he realized.  “That could be another point for the theory about your Alpha spark pulling them back into this world.” Ever had overheard their conversation and now chimed in.  Liam nodded slowly. “Hm, yeah. But we don’t think about this tonight, okay? Tonight we just enjoy being all together and having fun.” He took the beer bottle Theo held out for him and raised it to toast. “To a fun night full of fun for the pack.” “No,” Corey held up his own bottle. “To Liam, the best Alpha we could ask for and one of the best friends all of us will ever have. Happy Birthday, big brother.” “Cheers!” The pack wholeheartedly agreed with Corey’s words and they all clinked their bottles or glasses together before they wandered over to a few bar tables located near the dartboard and the pool tables. 

It didn’t take long for the group to split into several fractions; one playing darts, the other playing pool, and the third sitting at the bar stools at the tables, eating the onion rings and pretzels Mason treated them to while watching the others or occasionally taking part in the games.  Liam had decided to play some darts. He had no idea if he was good at it but he played it in the past and found it quite enjoyable, so he went for this. Theo and Brett had immediately taken to the pool table and it looked like they developed a new level of friendship over them both liking the game so much. Since Theo had called Brett out, the two talked often, about various things but also about hell and coming back, and their personalities mixed very well together. Tim had found a very fitting term when he titled them “The ridiculously hot - and well aware of their own hotness- bros”. And then Mike had sat with the two of them and joined the conversation and Tim had left the room muttering something about “That being way too much to handle”. Liam still grinned when he thought how the scene had played out. Tim now tried to build a little house with the pretzels and Ever giving him advice where to put the next piece. Nolan and Lori also approached the pool table and tried their luck but it was crystal clear they were not nearly as skilled as Brett and Theo. 

Holy balls, those two were fantastic. Theo had let it slip once he learned how to play pool to scam people at bars and get some money on the side when he lived with the Dread Doctors and later when he lived in his truck and Brett seemed naturally good at any game or sports he played. Both challenged each other to trick shots but even Brett had to agree at one point Theo was better at tricks than he was. Now they worked together to teach Noland and Lori.

“Damn, you really suck at pool,” Theo leaned on the billiard queue and took in the scattered billiard balls Nolan had managed to get all over the table. “I’m afraid, pool really is not your forte, little hunter,” Brett agreed and Nolan blushed so brightly, even the dim light in the pub could not hide it. Liam snickered into his beer and almost choked on the sip he had taken.  “Nols, you can play with us. Your accurate aim surely will help my team to win,” Sadie waved a dart in Nolan’s direction and he gladly fled the table and joined her. Lori had skipped off after she found a pinball machine in the corner and now squealed happily at the little blue ball moving up and down. 

“Why do you get to have Nolan in your team?” Mike asked Sadie and he just flashed him a wolfish grin. “Because I’m his best friend and I say he plays with the girls,” Ever called out from heat seat.  “Liam! An alpha decision, please!” Mike and Corey glanced at Liam who shrugged. “Sorry, the Alpha is on a break for tonight. I’m sure you will sort this out on your own. Ask Mason to join your team.” “Mason? The one who once shot the tire of Derek’s car when he got hold of Nolan’s crossbow?” Corey frowned and threw a napkin at his husband when Mason squawked indignantly. “You know I’m right, baby. You and arrows are not really a good mix.” “It was one time and I paid for that tire! Accidents happen!” Liam snickered again and looked over at the pool table again while his friend bickered in the background. 

Theo and Brett had moved to play against each other. Currently, Theo was leaning forward to take a shot and from Liam’s place, he had the best view of how the muscles in Theo’s back moved under Theo’s t-shirt, how the shirt slid up to reveal a sliver of skin. The Alpha’s eyed dropped lower, to the jeans fitting his boyfriend perfectly. Theo surely knew how to dress and Liam was here for it.  “Liam? It’s your turn,” Sadie waved the darts in front of his face and Liam jumped in his seat.  “What? Ah, sorry, I was busy ogling that fine ass playing pool.” He slipped from his stool and grabbed the darts from her hands. When he walked over to the board, he noticed Theo looked over his shoulder and smirked at Liam, clearly had heard the comment. But while he enjoyed undressing his mate with his eyes, he wanted to win this darts match and so Liam huffed out a breath and concentrated. All his darts hit the mark not as good as he wanted but they didn’t entirely miss either. When he plucked them from the board and turned around, he realized Theo leaned against the billiard table, drank his beer, and watched Liam without ever averting his eyes. Liam made a silly face and curtsied. Theo’s snort, even somehow covered by the drink, made it over to Liam and he chuckled.

“Where the fuck did you learn that?” Tim stared at Liam like he turned violet with yellow dots all over his skin.  “In the Mr. Barrington’s Class for Young Gentlemen at Devenford Prep,” Liam and Brett answered at the same time. They laughed at the shared memory of their former teacher and high-fived.  “Is he still teaching this class?” Liam asked and Brett nodded.  “As far as I know. I mean, he did until I...you know.” The tall werewolf grinned. 

“Whoa, whoa, give me a moment. I know Bacon Hills was crazy but please don’t tell me your local high school really offered a class for young gentlemen. When did you do that? After or before you fought werejaguars and the Anuk-ite? Or somewhere between?” Maya asked with a deep frown.  “No, Maya, that supernatural shit went down after that. Not Beacon Hills High offered the class but Devenford Prep, the school I went to before I transferred. The same school I met Brett,” Liam tried to solve her confusion.  “Devenford Prep sounds like a private school,” Sadie said casually and stirred her drink.  “It was,” Brett confirmed and drank from his beer. “And we had this teacher, Mr. Barrington, who was as American as you can imagine but he considered himself a British earl and held this class as some sort of club after classes. Taught the boys to eat with all the right cutlery, how to behave, what to say. Most boys went there and right after they exited the classroom forgot everything he taught them.” “I still know some things but I’d rather not use them. I’m sure Theo would stab me with a fork if I treat him like a gentleman should treat a lady and unfortunately we never learned etiquette for same-sex relationships. Also, he would die laughing if I ever seriously bowed down to him.” “Yep.” Theo reached for an onion ring when he confirmed Liam’s theory.  “Oh my god, I’m imagining you two in an etiquette class. How adorable.” Ever giggled. Sadie pawed at her arm.  “You’re missing the most important thing: Private school probably meant school uniforms, right?” At Brett’s and Liam’s nods, she squealed. “Please, tell me there are pictures! I need to see pictures!” “There are tons of pictures. Mom was so proud and the school held so many events. Enough time to take many pictures.” Liam shuddered. He had never really liked the uniform, hence those pictures not being his favorites but for the sake of it, he would even show her and the others the pictures. 

“I don’t get the big deal, I wore a school uniform during my school days as well,” Mike announced while he munched onion rings. Suddenly the pack’s sole attention was on him.  “You? Wearing a school uniform?” Nolan could not believe that.  “Yup. Grey slacks, white dress shirts, dark blue ties, and dark green blazers. I still have that thing.” “You still have it? Why? It doesn’t sound like you liked the uniform.” Tim knew his best friend.  “We had to buy our own uniforms or rather our parents had to buy them. The school didn’t pay for them. If you were too poor to afford the uniform...Just kidding, if you were too poor to afford the uniform, you didn’t attend this school.” “That’s arrogant,” Corey chimed in.  Mike scoffed. “Yeah, that’s a good word to describe this school and most of the students and staff. You know those rich kids of Snapchat? I went to school with these people and the school only supported this way of thinking. Needless to say, I didn’t really enjoy my time there.” “Mike,” Sadie said seriously, “if you think you get away without me seeing you wearing a school uniform, may it be in pictures or live, you’re mistaken. Same goes for the two of you.” She pointed at Brett and Liam. “Should I be scared?” Brett inquired and Maya nodded. “Yep. She’s on a mission now.” “Oh boy,” Brett muttered and put a hand full of pretzels in his mouth, maybe not as fazed by this as he probably should be.

****** “What do you think?”

Rod asked Liam. They both stood on the lacrosse field and watched the open training. Against Liam’s fear of nobody coming, quite some people had taken interest and attended the training. Now it was coming to end and coach and captain exchanged their opinions.  “There are some promising people, men and women. With them on the team, we might have a chance of doing better than before. They need training, of course, but that was expected. I think we can work with what we have,” Liam shared his insight.  Rod nodded. “Think so too. Some of them never played lacrosse in a competitive team before, the training will be new to them but that’s what I’m here for.” He grabbed his bag. “Thank you for your help, Liam.” “Hey, it’s my team too.” Liam patted the coach’s back and took his own bag. 

They turned around to leave the field when a dark-haired guy sprinted towards them. “Is the open training over already? I wanted to attend it but I just recently transferred and had to check with the administration office. They took awfully long, that’s why I’m only arriving here now.” He cast a look at the now empty field and groaned. “Guess I have to participate in the next open training.” Liam and Rod shared a look. “I know you have an appointment at your son’s school. Go. I take care of this and tell you how it went,” Liam offered and Rod gave him a grateful smile.  “Thank you, Liam.” He clapped him on the back and then shook hands with the new guy. “Good Luck...What’s your name?” “Caden Thermopolis, you can call me Cade. Or Alec.” “Alec?” Liam wondered what gave him that nickname. “I got told I look like the Alec guy from the Shadowhunters series. I don’t really see it but oh well. Archery being one of my hobbies don’t help much in that case. The nickname stuck...” Cade shrugged and simpered.  “Okay, Caden, I leave you in the care of our team captain Liam. Show him what you can do.” Roderick waved and then walked to the locker room. 

Liam dropped his bag back on the bench again. “Ever played before?” “My dad and some of his friends had their own little neighborhood lacrosse league and I played there. Also, my old college had a team but somehow we only played for fun. I know what I have to do if that’s what your question aimed at.” Liam fiddled with his phone and typed. “Just letting my boyfriend know I will come home later, then we can start. I’d suggest, we start with warm up, want to see your stamina. Come on, we run around the field.” Liam threw his phone on top of his bag after he finished texting and started to jog. Caden dropped his things and soon jogged next to him.  “Where do you come from?” “My last college was in Illinois but my family lives in Chicago.” “Never been there but heard it’s a beautiful city.” “Oh, it truly is. Though I felt the need to venture out after high school, explore more cities and my parents absolutely encouraged me.” “My parents did the same thing to me. I come from a small town in California and they were sad I was leaving but they never tried to stop me.” “It’s good to hear that. Our family has very close bonds and it’s always nice to hear other families seem to have them as well.” “Hm, agreed.” Liam picked up his pace a little bit. His goal was to challenge the guy but to his wonder, Caden stayed hot on his tails. Being an Alpha, Liam knew he was fast. What surprised him that while he was faster than Caden, the man could still keep up without falling too much behind. It reminded him of Theo, Maya, and Sadie, the fastest of his Betas.

They stopped jogging after a while and Liam threw Caden one of the lacrosse sticks they used for the open training. “I will fire some shots at you, let me see how good you are at catching.”  “Okay.” Caden nodded and then moved to the spot Liam assigned him too. Liam grabbed his own stick and the ball and wiggled it in the net.  “Keep it easy on me, captain,” Caden joked.  “Easy never won any titles but I promise not to be too hard on you,” Liam replied and flung the first ball at Cade. He caught it without much of a problem. Liam really liked that. Fast reflexes, almost reminded him of Kira. 

The next shorts were harmless as well and Caden caught them without breaking so much of a sweat. Even when Liam targeted the corners to see him move, he managed to catch the ball, albeit in the last seconds. Liam raised an eyebrow. Those reflexes were faster than those of a human and his wolf woke up and assessed the other man. They were the same age and while Cade was taller than Liam, he was the Alpha and surely could take him.  To test his theory, Liam’s shots became faster and harder, fueled by the wolf inside him. Caden looked taken aback but then did his best to catch the balls, even when Liam fired more and faster shots at him. He didn’t succeed at 100% but the shots he caught were enough to confirm Liam’s suspicion. 

It was then he snapped and shot forward to shoulder tackle the other to the ground and press his lacrosse stick against Caden’s chest. “What are you? Your reflexes are supernatural, don’t even try to deny it!” Liam flashed his eyes Alpha red.  Caden had sputtered when he found himself on the ground and then dusted his hands off. “Dude, what the hell?” He looked up and his hazel eyes widened when he saw the Alpha staring him down. “Oh fuck, you’re an Alpha!” He scattered away from Liam, created some separation but still remained on the ground. Slowly he went to a crouching stance yet kept his head down. “I had no idea you were an Alpha. Look, I didn’t mean any harm, I just wanted to apply for the team.” His eyes flashed gold. Liam lowered his stick. “You’re also a werewolf.” He sniffed. “But you don’t smell like a wolf, you smell human.” “I don’t have a pack, maybe that’s why? Look, Alpha, can I please get back up? I promise I’m not a trouble maker and won’t attack you. I am a good werewolf.”

Maybe his reaction had been too harsh, Liam had to admit that. It was one of those moments where he acted first and thought second. The moment that usually got him in trouble. He sighed and extended his hand to help Caden to his feet. “So am I but years of fighting all sorts of supernaturals made me suspicious. Sorry about that. And call me Liam.” “No hard feelings, really.” Caden waved it off. “I mean, the Alpha protects. You’re that sort of Alpha, right? The Protector. You’re not the kind of Alpha to go on a killing spree just because he can, right?” “No, I protect. My pack and the people I care about.” “Good, good.” Caden nodded. Liam nodded over to the bench. “Tell me about yourself. You said you don’t have a pack, that means you’re an Omega.”

They walked over and sat down. Caden grabbed his water bottle and took a sip. “Figure I should start at the beginning. I don’t have a wolf pack but consider my family my pack. They helped me with all this werewolf stuff. You must know, my parents are not my biological ones. None of their five kids is biological, we are all adopted and from different cultures. My parents loved to travel and always wanted a large family. That way they could also help. I have a sister from Japan, a brother from Peru, you get the memo. Our family is open-minded, my oldest sister is gay and my parents have done nothing but support her and her girlfriend. They raised us that way and also never kept us being adopted a secret. They also always did their best us kids stayed in touch with our culture and we traveled a lot. When I was fifteen, we traveled to Greece and one night I went for a walk, that’s when an Alpha attacked and bit me. He ran away and left me there and I was so scared, injured and bloodied, I ran home to my parents. I had no idea where else to go.”

“That’s why they knew about you being a werewolf,” Liam realized.  “My siblings know as well and they all helped me figure this out. We searched for the Alpha and found out he had lost his wife and daughter which turned him feral. After he attacked me, the guilt was too much. We found the guy’s corpse, later on, had killed himself. But yeah, with all their support, my family became my pack even though they’re all humans. I researched most things I know about werewolves through the internet; the things is you can never be sure with this information.” “Research is fine and dandy but being around real werewolves is something entirely different. And some information on the web is just plain wrong.” Liam and Mason had made the same experience.  “I didn’t even know how to find other wolves. It’s not like you can make a Craiglist ad. Heck, I didn’t even know there was a wolf pack at SU.” “We are here. Though admittedly, we are not a common pack.” Liam chuckled and it caught Cade’s attention. “What’s that suppose to mean?” “We have wolves but also a witch, a werechameleon, our Emissary is human, we have another human who is our hunter, my boyfriend was half wolf and half coyote but now is a full werewolf since I bit him. We are quite unusual,” Liam summed up his pack.  Caden smiled softly. “Sounds nice.” “You surely know a wolf is not as strong as Omega as he is as Beta? You came across this information on the internet.” “I did but like I said, finding wolves is hard.” “Tell me about it. Most of my pack mates found me rather than I found them. But that’s not important, important is we found each other in the end.”

They silently sipped their water for a while. “Did you...kill someone to become Alpha? That’s how you get Alpha powers mostly, am I right?” Caden suddenly asked.  “There are several ways to become an Alpha. By conquest, by inheritance, or being a True Alpha. My old Alpha, the one responsible for biting me, is a True Alpha. Scott McCall, ever heard of him before?” The other shook his head. It was rare people had not heard of Scott before and a part of Liam was pleasantly surprised.  “But to answer your question, I didn’t kill and I’m not a True Alpha myself. I became an Alpha by ritual which is rare but almost as great as a True Alpha if I’m allowed to be frank.”  “Wow, that’s a lot. I heard about killing the Alpha and think I came across the conquest one but I never heard about the others before. This world is so different than what you read in the books or online.”  “Oh, I know that. Me getting the bite was not voluntarily but Scott saved my life with it. Took me a while to accept that. Got turned when I was fourteen, I had other things on my plate when it happened.” Liam had decided he could trust Caden. The other didn’t seem hostile and he always, maybe without really noticing, paid respect to the Alpha with keeping his voice down and never acted like he wanted to challenge Liam. It calmed his inner wolf. “You can’t really get to know the werewolf culture just by reading things. Trust me, my best friend Mason, our Emissary, tried that. You will miss big parts of the experience. Some things are hard to write down because they are hard to explain or everybody experiences them differently. You need the contact with other wolves. Especially, since your Alpha is dead.”

“Why is that so important? I mean, yep, I’d have loved to talk to him and get answers to my questions but he’s dead so that’s it. Or is it true what I read about the telepathic connection between Alpha and Beta? I honestly can’t imagine that.” “The bond between Alpha and Beta is special. If you kill a Beta, the Alpha will feel it. It feels like losing a limb. That’s why most Alphas are so protective of their Betas. Scott would have been destroyed if I got killed and I would be more than just destroyed if something would happen to Theo. We share so many connections but I also always feel him in the pack bond. He’s my only bitten one, it’s different than for the other Betas. I don’t know if it’s really telepathic but I do know The Alpha can control their Beta in some way. You have to ask Mason about this, I didn’t really understand the whole concept. But your Alpha is dead. Nobody can control you.” “That is good, I suppose” “Having an own free will is always good.” Liam grinned. Caden looked at him and chuckled. 

“You’re a cool guy, Liam.” “You’re not so bad yourself, Cade. Tell you what, we’re having a BBQ at the pack house Friday evening. Why don’t you drop by and I introduce you to the pack? You can meet other supernaturals that way and also have a nice time. You transferred recently so I’m not sure you know anybody around here?” “I know nobody. But do you think it will be okay if I join you? I don’t want to interrupt pack time.” “Ey, the Alpha invites you, you can’t say No. Wolf Law.” “Really? There is a Wolf Law where these things are sorted out?” Now Liam laughed loudly. “No, I’m just messing with you. There are some rules you should follow if you want to be considered good. Or some rules you should break if you want to be considered evil. You know about the blue eyes?” Caden shook his head.  “If a were takes an innocent life, their eyes turn from gold to blue. If an Alpha takes an innocent life, their eyes stay red but when they lose their Alpha status they will be blue.” “Oh boy, that’s a lot.” Caden rubbed his neck.  Liam patted his shoulder. “Don’t exhaust yourself, no need to learn all this right now. Take your time and uncover one thing after another. We all are still learning, I’m not sure we ever stop. But that’s life, I guess.” He shrugged.  “I will take my time. I’m a fast learner, however. The Shadowhunters joke was lame but I couldn’t help myself. Hope you forgive me 😅 It reminded me of that one scene in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody where Maddie auditioned for the role of Sharpay and said she looked like Ashley Tisdale but nobody believed her. 

Fun Fact about Caden: I had everything about him, his faceclaim, how he would appear in the story, his backstory, for months. What I didn't have was his name. He was literally named a few days ago 😉😊

I had fun writing this chapter and I could not wait to post it because I planned Caden's appearance for quite a while and now he's here and I'm excited. I reached a point in this story where I still get many new ideas the more I think about but I’m also at the point where what I have already planned is slowly coming together. This is amazing to see and if I could I would just spend day and night writing the next chapters. Just thinking about it excites me and I can't wait to see what you guys think of it.

5. Do you believe in aliens or ghosts? I definitely believe in aliens. I believe it conceited to think that we’re the only intelligent life the universe could come up with. Ghosts, I’m not so sure...

6. Who is your favorite author? John Flanagan (writer of the Ranger’s Apprentice-series.)

7. What is your favorite radio station? I don’t listen to radio, but I am a radio host at my grandmother’s radio station, so I’ll pick that one, lol.

18. What is your worst quality, in your opinion? My inability to cope with criticism. I don’t get particularly defensive, most of the time, because I know that criticism is someone’s way of telling me that something needs to be improved. What I do find difficult, however, is keeping in mind that the criticism isn’t directed at my person, but at the piece of work I am performing.

Using the TV for music is fine, but leaving on a the TV and going back and forth between that and something else is so annoying to me.

50. Have you ever been to a concert? Once or twice. I went to a WINNER concert when I was in Japan. It was an amazing experience!

100. Are you a good liar? I suppose I’m good at white lies? But I never think they’re lies, lol. It’s like, my husband will ask ‘did you do the dishes’, and I’ll instinctively answer ‘yes’ because I thought I did it, and then I’ll realize I’m not done yet, and I’ll rectify myself.

102. Do you talk to yourself? In a manner of speaking. If I’m alone, I like to walk around and talk out stories I’m planning like I’m in a play. 113. What is the best decision that you’ve made in your life so far? Getting interested in Anime back when I was 12 years old, I think. It led to me meeting my best friend at the age of 14, learning one of the coolest languages in the world, meeting my husband, going on exchange to Kobe for the best four months of my life and making tons of friends I’d never have met otherwise.
