halfas are the found family trope foster child
they all adopt each other. it’s the reason Vlad wanted so badly to have Danny as his son and the reason Danny immediately went with sure you’re my cousin now with Dani. it’s a survival mechanism from being so very few of their species. Sooo, halfa!Jason except he sorta isn’t yet cause Jason’s core is extremely ruptured from the lack of ectoplasm involved in his forceful resurrection. So when Danny finds Jason in his catatonic state he can’t quite tell the dude’s been dead and remains some, just that the guy for some reason seems very friend-shaped. Danny doesn’t mind his friend is braindead, and is also a john doe, he gives familiar vibes and that’s apparently enough for Danny to constantly find himself in the hospital doing his engineering homework on the room with the guy, and talking for hours about the updates on the absolute clusterfuck of the city and how he was from a freaking ghost town and he can almost even draw comparisons. he blabbers about how he’s not homesick enough times to even corner himself to talk about a ghost lore many times and how he’s just finding himself a little more prone to violence and in constant pain since none of the people he has adopted as his family are here with him and he can’t consider a place a lair if there’s isn’t someone of his in it.
But Danny could never drag someone with him just because of some it, after all it was Danny’s choice to come to Gotham to collage and not stay where at least his parents (good parents Jack and Maddie) were in Amity.
Ironically, Danny essentially can’t feel that his core has been spoon feeding ectoplasm to Jason. As months go on, the little ball of energy builds in anticipation practically vibrating in the waiting pulse of something (Danny doesn’t know but more often than not has he found himself laughing in happy confusion. it weirds him out in a good way) It’s really that he’s feeling the slow healing process of his friend (brother brother brother) ‘s core.Imagine it’s just about to properly, correctly heal when canon strikes back and Jason gets snatched by League assassins. Danny is left feeling like his core got torned out. His core had spend months helping another’s only to feel the other’s imprint and to not be able to protect it in return is— forget it being an obsession; thats like having your newborn baby being ripped out of your arms. An all assuaging feeling of helplessness that is devastating. Danny just beginning to feel like home lair when out of nowhere the rug is swept under him. Danny suddenly struggling to not flunk all his classes and beat every single liminal that he can feel crossing paths with him to the ground. Danny suddenly having his chronic pain (that hadn’t been so bad lately) dialed up to the point that there are just bearable and bad days.
The worse thing is he doesn’t know why.
Jason had only been a guy.
It’s only a three weeks before Jazz tells him she accepted a job offer in Gotham.
(and the guilt only makes him feel worse when he can feel himself feel better because of it)
now
whimsical time skip ✨
Danny is now on his feet again and friends with a Wayne of your choice (or maybe they were friends a little before Jay dissapeared and it was badTM cause Waynes? liminal 🥲) Danny definitely didn’t enjoy snapping off to his friend like that. anyways it’s been a year since that and he and his friend are having a grand time playing civvies, uhh let’s say dick because I want them to meet while ice skating, Also Dick because he definitely turns a blind eye when Danny goes airborne for a second there yep. He’s just having too much fun.
anyways as alwaysTM Danny doesn’t clock celebrities and like why would he, Dick is just the random guy who’s was fast to turn Danny’s slow day in the ice ring into a competition one day and brighten when Danny matched up his puns. So he totally doesn’t get why the guy’s so gloomy one day, anyways as you can figure, it’s Jason’s deathday and Dick is a deprecating bean, Danny tries to cheer him up by having him remember his brother instead and Dick attempts to, but even skipping through some photos in his phone make his eyes burn.
It is because of that that he doesn’t notice Danny absolutely freeze up at the photo of his friend Jay (Jay because he’s a John Doe, but that’s just too impersonal and so the first letter is J *wink wink*)
Danny absolutely doesn’t know what to do with this information, barely catches himself from asking Dick how did his brother die. Most importantly when because Danny just saw Jay—Jason less than a year ago, and this somehow doesn’t feel too recent.
Annd that how we find Danny digging into the Wayne second son tragedy. Staring at the date of death while the knowledge that they met almost six months after burns his forefront of his mind. Danny spends a day going over all the questions running through his mind over how the fuck he couldn’t sense Jay was a ghost—err was… in past tense?? what the fuck?? Danny would really like a refund on his ghost sense.
Anyways Danny goes check out the grave (now that he knows there is one) and boom although intangible he somehow triggers those shitty ass sensors/alarms that somehow didn’t go off when jason was literally digging himself out.
Obviously the bats get in the case immediately. And boy are they absolutely enraged that someone would steal Jason’s body.

You know what mixture of AUs i havent seen here yet? Danny x Bruce with de-aged clones!
Bruce and danny are near the same age and meet pretty early in batman's career, maybe even before dick was adopted. Danny is a single dad of infant/toddler twins ellie and dante. (To make them young and at the same age, i imagine they were rescued after both taking serious damage and retreated to their cores, and remerged as newborns about the same time, but i also want to leave this open for others to flesh out.) Timeline-wise, that would probably make them somewhere around jason or tim's age.
So now we have an au where the bat kids are collected into a stable home where bruce and danny are also raising ellie and dante. Bruce is much closer to WFA characterization right from the get-go because danny would whip him into shape.
Tim probably gets adopted because one of the phantoms sniff him out, either living alone in the neighboring mansion, or following the bats and ghosts on patrol.
Talia either stole bruce's (and/or danny's) dna or drugged bruce (it didnt work on danny) to create damian. If bruce was drugged, danny is on a warpath and might even find and rescue damian at a much younger age.
Jason's timeline is the most difficult to predict, and i will forever simp halfa jason, so he's gotta die no matter what changes. I dont think that's terribly difficult because the joker specifically targeted him to lure him out (assuming i understand canon correctly - also this is definitely true in the UtRH animated movie canon). If jason isnt interested in finding his biomom in this au, joker will just find a different bait. Would be cool if danny is able to track down jason's ghost during the six-month down time and brings him home, and a potential point of angst if he revives without his memories as a ghost (and is lost for a while before danny tracks him down again.)
(Danny probably doesn't have the no-killing rule like bruce, so he'd have no qualms killing the joker and detaining/destroying his ghost. If not danny, then jazz would. Bruce conveniently looks the other way.)
Batman mythology in this universe is inexorably linked to phantom mythology. They both help each other out with vigilante stuff. Danny's team (sam/tucker/val/jazz) visit often and are considered aunts/uncle to the batkids. Batfam is highly liminal because they are part of danny's fraid. They might even develop liminal powers, if that's your kind of headcanon.
Danny may or may not be ghost king, but i like the idea that he's the crown prince and wont be coronated for several more decades. He's got time and all the resources that position affords him. Danny still gets hounded by the observants, but the batkids have made a game of pranking the annoying eyeballs.
Danny is a founding member of the justice league and of jld (the rest of his team might be as well). Batman is much more knowledgeable of the supernatural because of danny. I like the idea of constantine being more terrified of phantom than batman. He still gets called on for advice because he's the demonology and magic expert, while danny specializes more in ghosts and Realms technology.
Ellie and dante are not allowed to join the vigilante scene until they turn 12 (they managed to argue it down from 14), but because of their powers (and potentially retaining memories and experience) there are numerous occasions before then that they functioned as a sort of vigilante retrevial unit - zooming out and retrieving anyone who was injured or otherwise hit their emergency beacon and bringing them straight back to the cave. They might have even done this once or twice during justice league emergencies.
I'll leave their vigilante identities open to discussion, but im partial toward a really old drawing i remember seeing here on tumblr, someone designed a pink batsuit for ellie with exaggerated bat ears, and a sort of glider cloak that attached to her belt or her wrists to disguise her flight as gliding. (If someone knows the post im talking about, please leave a link so the artist can be credited!)
As for danny's old team...
Jazz works at arkham, helping to reform the place and causing many of batman's rogues to reform a bit earlier. She is the expert called in by the justice league to formulate ways to both detain and to help various rogues globally. She especially likes the flash because of the friendly attitude he has towards his own rogues.
Sam is a humanitarian. If she has plant powers, she's using them to establish food stability in poorer nations, helping the people there become more self-sustaining, as well as providing relief for disaster-stricken areas whose farms need to be completely rebuilt and regrown. Jazz introduces her to poison ivy, and the two end up joined at the hip, helping to reform ivy much earlier. (Would it be weird to make this au have sam x ivy and jazz x harley?)
Valerie probably stays in Amity Park to be its designated hero since danny moved out. If the fentons are good, she works alongside them as the fentons also develop tech for the justice league. If they arent, im gonna assume theyre the reason dante and ellie got de-aged, danny absconded with their cores to keep them safe, and the rest of team phantom descended on the fenton parents like hungry wolves. When the dust settled, valerie and her dad were left in charge of protecting amity and with ownership of fentonworks.
Tucker is a freelance hacker slash tech expert, and will kit out any vigilante's tech and security free of charge. His unique blend of magitech is very difficult to counter, making it all-the-more sought after. He probably helped set oracle up and maybe even trained/mentored barb to some extent.
There are lots of other potential changes, but ill stop here.

Dc x Dp Prompt #4: Ghost Selkie
Disclaimer: references and facts about Selkies are based on Selkie folklore, true facts about seals, and stuff I just made up because it works well with the story
~~~~
Okay so Urban Fantasy inspired au where turns out there is some Selkie blood mixed up somewhere in the Fenton bloodline. As such Jazz and Danny exhibit a few Selkie-like traits but nothing too serious: a playful nature, a certain grace and agility, attraction to shiny things (stars and microscopes), a decent singing voice, being strong swimmers, and seeing in the dark better than the average person. After The Accident™️ and being more involved with the super natural world some of those aspects get a bit stronger for Danny but he just chalks it up to being a Halfa. That is until Skulker catches him on an off-day and manages to capture him by snagging the back of his jumpsuit. Phantom, in a moment of panic and desperation, decides to try and rip off his bodysuit to escape. The suit comes of alright but out tumbles Danny Fenton rather than a de-clothed Phantom. Skulker, in a moment of shock, drops the suit and Danny catches cradling it to his chest while every fiber of his being screams “MY COAT. MY PELT. MINE, DONT STEAL IT.” Skulked realizes what’s happened before Danny does and nopes out of there bc “ This is not what I meant when a said I would have your pelt whelp!” Danny is left sitting there feeling stunned. A quick round of experimentation leads him to figure out that he is now able to take off the suit in Phantom form, but it will de-transform him into Danny. Furthermore, the regular "going ghost" transition still works both with and without him physically holding the suit.
A quick consultation with Clockwork and Frostbite reveals the Fenton Selkie heritage and he goes back to report to Jazz and his friends. Due to Jazz’s instance the siblings get a crash course in Selkies through a community of Selkies and Part-Selkies in the Infinite Realms as well as having a younger ghost show them where to find the modern underground Selkie-Community. Which leads to them getting emotionally adopted by their (dead and alive) Selkie mentors. They learn about eating habits, behavior, culture and customs (including the in and outs of courtship and mating), and camflouge/blending into society.
Jazz learns to tap into her vocal magic/manipulation. Her voice has a deeply calming effect on others and they feel more compelled to listen to her. This comes in handy with some of her more rowdy patients at her internships and stuff. She’s also to taps into the physical aspects of her Selkie blood and gains enhanced dexterity, agility, balance and reflexes. She’s also working towards improving her strength and stamina. Needless to say her aim has definitely improved. Nothing too wild but as she gains more liminality, those aspects become stronger so she’s definitely a cut above the average human though not as crazy as Danny.
Danny on the other hand gets the ability to “shed his pelt” by being able to physically take of his suit and de-transform as well as how to disguise the suit as a jacket or something (maybe a romper or a cardigan?) so that he he can keep it on him for quick, more discreet transformations if he wants to. His ghostly form takes on more Selkie traits like fangs for a powerful bite and more muscle mass and fat in certain areas to improve his endurance and cold resistance. He also learns to manipulate his ectoplasm to be able to shapeshift into the seal version of a Selkie. He is able to practice and manipulate his Ghostly Wail and hone it into a Siren Song and Sonic Singing too.
So basically both the Fenton siblings get cool Selkie power-ups (and unbeknownst to the two, admittedly already quite attractive siblings, their looks take on an otherworldly allure too). As well as a new community eager to take them in and provide them with support. That's why when Danny decides he wants to get away from Amity for college (the ghosts have agreed to a truce as long as Danny pops in for a spar and some shenanigans every now and then. He acquiesces because playing and roughhousing is a part of building social relations for both ghosts and selkies) some of their Selkie contacts help him apply for the Wayne Scholarship at Gotham University and get him set up in Gotham.
Let’s switch gears for a moment here. Gotham has always been a weird place full of weirdos, magic, and cursed energy. Basically, overall chaotic, edgy, and somewhat rancid vibes. It also is entwined with the supernatural. Lady Gotham, the spirit of the city, has allowed many a supernatural community to remain well hidden in her realm including but not limited to fae, witches, gargoyles, vampires, and of course, selkies. There is a huge underground supernatural community in Gotham, part of which is the Selkie community. Most of the Selkies moved out of the harbor and onto land due to pollution. The luckier ones who managed to gain some quick wealth settled in the Upper East Side or Coventry while others ended up in Burnley, the Bowery, and Crime Alley. However, family is very important to Selkies, so there is little resentment between the areas. They try to help out each other and the other members of the supernatural community in Gotham whenever possible. The overall magical community is spread out over Gotham with a few hot spots like Old Gotham, Robinson Park, Crime Alley and the Bowery, and Chinatown.
Now enter: Jason Todd (or a different member of the batfam of your choosing but you’re on your own to figure out how that’ll change the story). Jason grew up around a large portion of Gotham’s supernatural community. There were plenty of fae, selkies, sirens, vamps, and various other magical beings within Crime Alley. He discovered the community early on when he found out that the abuela who used to feed him tamales was in fact a Bruja (witch). Her name was Señora Mariana Soliña and she swore him to secrecy and taught him some basic knowledge on how to recognize and avoid being screwed over by the supernatural.
When his mother died Señora Soliña revealed her surprisingly large amount of wealth to him. She chose to live in Crime Alley to be closer to magical friends and people who would seek out her services as a witch doctor (her cover bc the best lies have a hint of truth). She offered him a hot meal and some spare cash when she could but they weren’t able to run into each other as often as they liked. After getting adopted and becoming Robin Jason made periodic visits to her before his death.
Jason’s resurrection didn’t happen in a Lazarus pit but when he crawled out of his grave. It was due to the magical energy(read also high ecto-concentration) in Gotham he had been exposed to that he became a Revenant. He was able to develop a core through the latent energy and become a spirit/reanimated corpse that sought to avenge both his death and countless others at the hands of The Joker. His dip in the Pits (polluted ectoplasm) brought him out of his catatonic state but triggered his obsession and left him with Pit Rage. Yada yada yada, trains with the League of Assassins, yada yada yada, trains with All-Caste and gets the ability to wield the magical All-Blades, yada yada yada, returns to Gotham for revenge becomes a crime lord, etc., etc., you know the drill.
Fast forward to when he’s made up with the BatFam and is now an antihero. His pit rage has gotten more controllable as the natural ectoplasm and magic in Gotham is slowly filtering out the polluted ectoplasm in his system but it’s still a long process. The supernatural community, however, is happy to have him there. You see Red Hood is actually quite a popular vigilante within the supernatural community. Among his many monikers, they were the ones who gave him the nickname “Avenger of the Unavenged”, and nod to his nature as a Revenant, as well as the aura of the All-Blades (which are meant to defeat absolute evil) that most magical beings recognize.
Jason is fully aware of the presence of the supernatural community in Gotham, as well as members of it who live within his haunt. Once things reach a new “normal” for him he tracks down Señora Soliña only somewhat surprised to see her alive and kicking. He asks for her guidance in the supernatural past the basic knowledge she gave him as a kid. Señora Soliña recognizes his magical aura and status as a Revenant and agrees. (Note: Jason is aware that he has some magic in him, but he attributes it to the All-Blades. He is not fully aware of his status as a Revenant. Señora Soliña assumes he knows and thus does not inform him.) She teaches him and helps him start getting integrated into Gotham’s supernatural community. She offers to “adopt” him as her grandson "Jason “Pedro” Todd Soliña" so that he can take on a civilian identity and attend college. He agrees, eager to resume his education and take on a semi-"normal" life.
And thus we've reached the part of our story where two worlds collide. Jason and Danny first meet peripherally during orientation at Gotham U. They don't really have a direct interaction, just learning each other's names during the icebreakers and some eye contact during the tour. Danny is dorming and Jason commutes so the don't see each other much past running into each other on campus or in the dining hall. That is until they spot each other at an underground, supernatural beings-only, cafe called Xenia a few blocks away Robinson Park.
The two realize the other must have a supernatural connection and start up a conversation. The conversation is illuminating as they learn they're both fairly new to the supernatural community and mostly ghostly. Danny reveals himself as a halfa and of selkie descent and Jason uses his cover to introduce himself as the grandson of a bruja with magic, a brujo-in-training if you will. Upon being asked what a halfa is Danny realizes Jason doesn't know a ton about ghost culture and gives him a quick crash course leading them both to figure out that a) Jason is a Revenant and b) Danny could probably help the Pit Rage by giving him some ecto-supplements. Due to this newfound information Jason conveniently forgets that his new friend mentioned having Selkie blood.
The two meet up more after that, intentionally this time so that Danny can continue teaching Jason about ghost culture and just to hang out. (Note: Danny isn't teaching Jason about selkie culture as he assumes the grandson of a bruja would know that stuff already. Jason has been taught a bit about selkies but they haven't thoroughly covered the topic of courtship yet). As they hang out and develop a friendship with each other the seeds of romance are planted.
One day after they wrapped up lunch at Xenia, Danny left the cafe, accidentally leaving his pelt/jacket on his chair as he's still getting used to having to keep track of it. Jason not realizing the significance of his actions picks it up and takes it with him. Later that day Danny freaks out realizing he left it behind when he runs into Jason. Jason was actually looking for him to return the jacket. So he's like "Hey man you left this at the cafe so I took it and now you can have it back" assuming the redness on Danny's face is just embarrassment. Danny, while mortified, is also extremely flustered. Selkies typically only let close family and lovers have access to their pelts because it implies a deep and intimate bond built on trust that they'll give it back. For Jason, who should know about such Selkie customs, to not only take his pelt but then also return it so easily is some very straightforward flirting. But hey, Jason is good friend... and easy on the eyes too. He wouldn't mind if there was something more there. So Danny decides that he wouldn't mind courting/being courted by Jason.
Jason on the other hand has in fact caught feelings for his friend but hasn't realized he already initiated courting by doing this. He plans to do it the ghostly way engaging in some bonding through sparing and roughhousing and building up their feelings before asking him out. Unfortunately for him, there is a lot of overlap between Selkie courting and ghostly courting so Danny believes that Jason has been courting him for some time now. There are also some things that are specific to Selkie courting Jason unknowingly does, such as buying Danny a bracelet (shiny rocks as a courting gift), beating up a couple of guys trying to mug Danny (defending/showing off for your mate), and introducing Danny to his family/agreeing to meet Jazz (family is very important to Selkies).
That's why when they go out to dinner, and Jason embarrassedly corrects a waitress who thought they were on a date by saying "Oh we're just friends", Danny is understandably upset. He was under the impression that their courtship was getting rather serious since Jason had met Jazz and Danny had met Jason's family. When he asks Jason why he told the waitress they weren't dating he replies "Umm because we're not?" in an uncertain tone. Danny feeling hurt and upset takes his glass of water splashes it onto Jason's face and storms out of the restaurant. Jason is left there soaking, confused, and wondering what he did wrong.
That night Jason goes to visit Señora Soliña to see if he messed up some ghostly custom for Danny to get so upset. When he arrives one of the first things she asks him is how it's going with Danny. When he recounts what happened at dinner and explains his confusion, the bruja takes a deep sigh before smacking him upside the head. Jason is like “wtf abuela?!” And she just shakes her head at him and calls him an idiot. She then reminds him that Danny is part Selkie and explains all the ways Jason has been courting him during the past few months. Jason, realizing he screwed up grabs one of his leather jackets and goes off to track down Danny.
Danny has returned to his dorm to cry and eat ice cream in his pjs from the comfort of his own room. He’s about to watch some comfort tv when there is a pounding at his door. He gets to find a disheveled looking Jason standing at his door. Danny frowns and questions what he’s doing here. Jason’s like “Look I know you’re upset and understandably so but please let me in and I can explain”. Danny’s care for Jason wins out over his anger as he resigns himself to letting the other in. The first thing Jason does is apologize for hurting Danny, saying it was never his intention to do so. He then goes on to explain how he hadn't realized that he had been courting Danny in Selkie customs. Danny is understanding but still upset and voices his feelings to Jason. Jason allows the other to get his anger out and then continues to say that he was actually trying to court Danny through ghostly bonding, and he would still like to date him if he’s open to it. Jason then takes off the leather jacket that he brought with him and offers it to Danny, saying that he doesn’t have his own pelt to offer, but this is the next best thing. This gesture nearly brings Danny to tears and he throws himself to hug Jason, accepting the jacket. The pull back and look into each other's eyes before sharing a kiss and spending the rest of the night cuddling before Jason has to leave.
From then on Jason ramps up the courting to 12, determined not to mess it up again. He reasearches selkie and ghost courting customs in depth to properly woo Danny and personalizes dates to their personalities. Danny is happy to be lavished with the attention and returns the favor. The two of them also make an effort to make sure the have clear communication to avoid having misunderstandings again. A few months later Jason decides to re-introduce Danny to the batfam as his partner and brings Danny along to Wayne Family Dinner with a ring around his finger. It’s a promise ring not engagement ring, but what Bruce doesn’t know will surely give him a heart attack and Danny is happy to go along with it. Danny and Jason become the longest and most stable relationship in the batfam. Tim and Damian even come to them for advice when they try to romance their own partners.
The story kind of just finishes off with the two of them being happy with each other and leaves an open ending to add in small scenes that happened during a time skip or after the story (e.g gushing to siblings, an actual proposal, identity reaveals, batboys seeking advice, them engaging in pda, interaction with other supernatural beings, gossip surrounding their relationship, ect.)
dp x dc au but danny is bruce's biological kid and he knows it. his parents straight up told him as soon as he was old enough to know, and he loves his adopted parents all the same.
of course, it was a bit rocky with all that ghost business, but eventually Jack and Maddie came around to their halfa son and liminal daughter. Danny just thought it was funny they took longer to accept he was alive and dead than accepting he was in a relationship with Sam and Tucker.
So there's some ghost conference in Gotham being held by the GIW in order to get more occultists/people interested in ghosts to work for them. The Fentons go there, as published ghost scientists, to expose the GIW and prevent people from buying into their beliefs.
But while they're out, one of the Bats mistakes Danny for a younger Bruce. Of course there are some differences, but the Bat (I'm thinking Tim, who's running on like -16 hours of sleep and several cups of coffee) is convinced he's a clone or something. So he takes a DNA sample and the results come out: he's Bruce's kid.
Bruce is devastated that he couldn't be there for one of his kids, and so he tries to get more info in order to possibly get custody back. Tucker, who accidentally found the network the Batcomputer used three weeks ago while looking for the GIW's, is immediately aware they're looking into Danny.
The Fentons have a collective moment of "oh for fuck's sake" and try to come up with a plan to get Bruce Wayne, who definitely is Batman at this point, to get off their case.
While on a walk to get his thoughts in order, Danny runs into Red Hood in Crime Alley. Both of them are immediately aware of the other for vastly different reasons. Jason, for "Batman wants to adopt this kid who already has a family" and Danny, for "oh shit this guy has a fucked up core what the hell is wrong with this guy" they have a Spiderman meme moment and Red Hood, always on the lookout for an opportunity to spite Bruce, offers his help. Danny accepts, with the caveat that he takes Jason to the Realms to figure out what the fuck is up with him.
Jason is extraordinarily confused but for some reason the Pit is really quiet around this guy and he feels safe around some dumb teenager so he's like "okay?? Sure??"
Danny takes him back to the hotel the Fentons are staying in and explains the situation a bit. Jack and Maddie hook up their temporary portal (blowing the electricity of the hotel in the meantime) and get Jason to the ghost doctor, Frostbite.
He gets diagnosed with "bro your ectoplasm is fucked up" disease and his ectoplasm is cleaned. He's like a diet halfa, with a few ghost powers but no ghost form. A liminal on steroids.
Anyway, Bruce sends a Batkid to the Fentons hotel (because of course he found it) in civilian garb to explain the situation. The Fentons Are Not Having It.
So, of course, with parents Bruce believes are mad scientists, he takes it upon himself to get that child out of a home of mad ghost hunters. By kidnapping him.
Danny's just pissed off because he finally got Vlad off his case and now he's here dealing with ANOTHER billionaire with a bat-themed super persona wanting to forcefully adopt him. The irony would be funny if it weren't so infuriating.
The Batkids are so happy to have a "new brother" in the house, even if said brother really doesn't want to be there. Jason just has no fucks left to give anymore and re-kidnaps Danny.
This of course sparks a game of Who Can Kidnap Danny and it's getting to the point where Danny just hates the BatFamily more and more because he was SUPPOSED to have a date with Sam and Tucker today and now he's holed up in the Batcave getting fitted for a vigilante costume by Nightwing. Alfred and Jason are the only sane people in the mansion.
So Danny "Bad Decisions" Fenton just says "fuck it" and goes ghost in private, leaving the manor and flying back to Amity. The convention has ended by this point, so they're all back home.
Cue BatFamily freaking out.
Eventually Bruce serves the Fentons legal papers (once he finds their address). The Fentons show up to court and verbally and respectfully ream Bruce for trying to re-adopt their son who they love so much. As the evidence of Bruce being wrong adds up, he realizes what he's done and feels like shit. Jason gives him a hearty "I told you so" for his efforts.
The Fentons live happily ever after, and Danny gets a cool secondary family that he doesn't really like until they all apologize.
Heheh. Just wait until they meet Dani, he thinks.
Barbie and Ken {Dead on Main}
The light flashed bright in Danny’s eyes, momentarily blinding him as he held the sign with his name up. He couldn’t believe this was happening. When Jazz had told him that she was going to set him up with a coworker of hers, Danny was expecting a nice night at dinner where they had some wine, talked about shared interests and all that jazz.
What he got instead was a knock out drag out fight with a bastard who immediately started throwing hands as soon as Danny had walked into the restaurant! He hadn’t even gotten to meet this guy that Jazz was setting him up with!
She had set him up with an English teacher at the school she was working at. The siblings had moved to Gotham together as soon as Danny had graduated from high school. In that time Jazz enrolled in Gotham University and got her degree in Chemistry and her teaching license.
Danny decided to go to school for linguistics. When you already know all the dead languages and most languages come from those, the idea of studying all of the others just sounded neat.
But none of that mattered now.
Why?
Because Danny Fenton was in fucking jail.
He scoffed as the police officer booking him in had him step away from the camera and put in his finger prints before escorting him to the hallway where the jackass he fought was already waiting, handcuffed and leaning against the wall, a scowl on his face. All Danny wanted to do was meet this Jason Todd guy that Jazz had been talking up for weeks and instead he got some fucking liminal prick who wanted to fight instead.
Which usually, the halfa was all for getting into a fun ghost fight! Even with fellow halfas or liminals. But not when he’s supposed to be on a date! Not when he’s trying to make himself look good for a guy who sounds like a match made in heaven for him!
Sure, the fight was a lot of fun, and it was the first time in years that he got to fight another ectoplasmic entity, but that was beside the point! Now Jason was going to think that Danny was nothing more than a criminal.
Oh, Danny hoped to the ancients that Jason hadn’t seen his fight with the liminal. He hoped to anyone who was listening, to Clockwork, to the Ghost Queen, anyone who was willing to listen to his pleas, they had to make it where Jason didn’t see him get arrested.
“Todd, Fenton! Follow me,” a guard shouted, Danny glanced over at the asshole and raised an eyebrow.
“Todd?” He said incredulously.
“Fenton?” The man asked with a disbelieving laugh of his own.
“Danny,” Danny said with a small smile, trying not to lose his shit. If his fucking date was the same guy with that fantastic left hook, he was going to lose his mind.
“Jason,” he said, letting out another chuckle. “Jazz was right, we did have instant chemistry, but not for the reason she thought. I’m fuckin’ sorry, I don’t know what came over me. I’ve never just attacked someone before. Well, not like that, at least,” he said, shaking his head as the two followed behind the guard.
The officer snapped at the two to shut up and Danny held back a sigh as he glanced over at the liminal. It was likely that Jason didn’t even know he was liminal and damn, that was a story that Danny wanted to hear as soon as possible. In the meantime, though, he looked this Jason Todd up and down and smiled to himself.
Jazz definitely knew what Danny’s type was. That was for damn sure.
Jason Todd was built like a goddamn tank. While Danny still managed to be taller than him by a few inches thanks to that Fenton height, the six foot man stood tall and buff compared to Danny’s own tall and lanky. He was absolutely sure that Jason could throw him around like a rag doll if Danny let him and by the ancients would Danny let him.
The freckles that smattered across the bridge of Jason’s nose reminded Danny of some of his favorite constellations. If he looked close enough he bet he could find quite a few, just looking where he was he found ursa minor, polaris sat right at the tip of Jason’s nose. He wanted to trace each and every constellation on his skin.
“Don’t worry about it, I have a punchable face,” Danny said with a laugh as the two got shoved into a holding cell together. He turned to the officer and called after him. “Don’t we get a phonecall!”
“Shut the fuck up,” the officer said before walking away.
“Gotta love Gotham’s finest,” Jason said with a chuckle as he sat on a metal bed with a pitiful paper thin mattress on top of it and a threadbare blanket laid on top. Danny took a seat beside him and let out a breath of air.
“Well, this wasn’t what I was planning for our first date,” Danny said softly. “I was thinking we’d get dinner, probably bail because I’m not big on fancy dinners and it was Jazz’s idea and then we could go walk around together and talk about books and the fact that the smog in Gotham is terrible.”
“That does sound fun,” Jason said with a chuckle. He glanced over at Danny and gave him a small smile. “You’re not what I was expecting. I mean you’re a lanky mother fucker but that punch to the jaw was no joke, I think it’s already bruising.”
Danny chuckled and took Jason’s face in his hands and turned his face to the side to look at where he had punched him to the face. “Yeah it’s bruising,” he said but smiled softly before he allowed his hand to ice over and pressed it against the bruise. “How’s that feel?”
“Better,” Jason said with a sigh as he smiled up at Danny. “You’re a meta?”
The halfa let out a soft hum. “In a way, does it count if you died in a freak lab accident and then came back wrong and with weird ghost powers?”
Jason looked at him startled before he threw back his head and let out a laugh of his own. “I’m jealous, all I got when I died and came back wrong was a white streak in my hair and an intense rage that never really goes away.”
Danny tilted his head and looked Jason over for a moment before he noticed the little ball of a blob ghost that seemed to be gnawing on his core inside of his chest.
“Remind me when we get out of here, I can fix that rage for you,” Danny said with a smug smile. “And trust me, I bet without that messing you up, you’ll get some fun little ghost powers too.”
Jason just laughed and launched into the tale of how he had come back to life in the first place, telling Danny a wild tale of assassins and weird pits of ectoplasm called Lazarus Waters and how he decided to become a crime lord in the night while during the day he went to school and eventually became an English teacher where he found a passion for helping teenagers who wanted to go somewhere in life.
In turn, Danny told his own story, about being a small town hero and later defeating the Ghost King, only to turn down the throne when it was offered and instead moved to Gotham with his sister to finally live a normal life and managed to somehow become a linguist despite the childhood dream of becoming an astronaut.
He didn’t know how long they spoke to one another, but by the end of it, Danny had completely forogotten he was in jail in the first place! At least until a guard came in and opened the cell.
“Fenton, Todd, you’ve been bailed out!” he barked. The two quickly got up and followed the man out of holding and into a hallway where Jazz and a tall dark haired older man stood giving the two twin looks of disappointment.
“Hey Bruce,” Jason said, a dopey grin on his face as he looked at his father.
“Hey Jazz, thanks for hooking us up,” Danny said with a grin as the guard uncuffed each of them and they immediately held hands. “Now, I know you want to chew me out for getting arrested. But technically this is your fault for setting me up with a liminal, of course we were going to get in a fist fight. Also, Mr. Wayne, interesting to meet you, Jason has told me so much about you it’s batty,” he said with a wink.
“Danny don’t you dare even think about it,” Jazz growled out, pointing a finely manicured finger at him. Danny looked from his sister to his date and smiled.
“Thanks for getting us together, Jazz, you’re a great coworker,” Jason said with a smile. “But we have a date to finish,” he said. Danny turned the couple intangible and the two shot into the air and out of the jail before either of the family members could stop them.
Jazz sighed and turned to Bruce. “I’m so sorry for introducing them to one another, I didn’t think that would happen,” she said with a sigh.
Bruce looked up at the ceiling before he looked back at Jazz. “Would you like a drink?”
“God yes,” she said with a sigh before following the older man out of the jail.
dc x dp prompt inspired by this tiktok
if you don’t wanna click the link, in summary it’s a hyper-realistic animation commenting on American overconsumption and capitalism through the metaphor of jeff bezos owning a bakery and using his sugary workers as ingredients once he realizes it makes his pastries more delicious. (it’s permanently altered my brain chemistry, i recommend that you watch it it’s so good.)
anyways, i’m aiming for “they’re in the same universe already” type angle, but you can do whatever you want. so let’s say a former GIW dude gets laid off and ends up in gotham. through whatever hijinks you choose, the guy discovers that shades are DELICIOUS in your average pastry and decides to open a bakery with this knowledge. (the only reason this dude and gotham citizens can consume these is cuz they’re liminal contaminated or something, you decide.)
now also for whatever reason, we find danny in gotham (with or without his companions) and by some magic of fate (clockwork probably) he stumbles on the bakery. he’s maybe heard how good it is and they’re just so yummy or something or other. upon trying it, he immediately wants to puke because he knows that there are shades in it and it feels like full on cannibalism. what he does about it is up to you.
on the bats end, they’re all enjoying these pastries as much as any other person in gotham. some bat manages to coax jason into trying one and when he tastes, he has a similar reaction to danny. he doesn’t recognize the secret ingredient as shades or inherently cannibalism, but he just feels down in his being that there’s something fucked up about it. (lazarus pits obviously tip one further towards liminal than not.)
side note on that, considering damien was raised nearby the lazarus pits for a majority of his childhood, i say that he’s neutral on the taste. like, it isn’t delicious or anything but it’s not the worst thing he’s tasted. and he’s definitely not gonna search out the sweet treats. (maybe he connects the dots between his and jason’s liminal-bility? does he follow jason around as he investigates the bakery? it’s up to you ;) )
on the other hand, the other bats don’t understand their distaste/neutrality and think jason’s tweaking, but jason knows what he knows. (cass believes him obvi. they probably investigate the bakery together)
so this is probably where the duo meets danny, and they figure out the stuff together and now you add whatever angst you want that comes with the combined worlds of danny phantom and detective comics. is danny the ghost king? demon twin au? is jason a baby halfa? it’s all up to y’all ig
NOW BE FREE *drops the idea at fanfic writer’s feet and skedaddles away*
Ko-fi thank-you sentences for ceceridercat; they gave me dealer's choice and are therefore getting more of the Jazz/Jason soulmates WIP because I had a sudden craving, hah.
"I don't know," Robin croaks. "I don't know what that means."
. . . Jazz is now very, very concerned.
"I want to see your core, Robin," she says very, very carefully. "Do you know what a core is?"
The question is ridiculous; even more unfathomably unlikely than him not recognizing her for what she is. No ghost just "doesn't know" what a core is.
But she asks it, because she's having a very, very bad feeling right now.
"No," Robin says, tensing up even worse and visibly aborting the impulse to take a step back from her. "I don't know what you're talking about. What are you doing to me, what do you want?"
Jazz's bad feeling wasn't bad enough, apparently.
"I'm not doing anything on purpose. It's a passive effect," she says. She doesn't especially like being Regent, it's mostly annoying and time-consuming and inconvenient, but she's never actually hated it before.
Right now she definitely hates it.
"Then turn it the fuck off!" Robin shouts at her, baring his teeth aggressively. It's a fear response; Jazz isn't tuning into his emotions on purpose, but he is very, very afraid right now.
She hates that, too. Would hate it even if he weren't her soulmate.
"I can't," she says. There's not meant to be a way to turn it off, and even if there were, she doesn't know it and probably doesn't have the ability to do it anyway. She's only liminal, after all. Not a full ghost or even a halfa. Everything that she can do is limited and shaped by that fact. Maybe Danny could figure it out, but Danny isn't here.
She doesn't know what to do, which is a perfectly normal thing, she knows, but not usually such a problem. But there's no backup here, no Danny or Sam or Tucker or Valerie or Dani, and honestly at this point she'd take Vlad, if only because he might know something about what's going on here. If only because her soulmate is afraid of her and doesn't even know what a core is.
How can any ghost not know that?
. . . actually, that's a good question, isn't it.
How can't he know? What would've had to happen, for a ghost not to know that?
New Dimension, Who’s This?
Dp x dc thoughts and stuff
I did not expect people to like this stuff, but I’m glad you're here
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6
Danny POV
Danny was NOT having a good time. Dimension hopping should have been fun, but it was shit. All the ecto he'd found had been corrupted and even the human food tasted weird. That 8$ pb&j was a curse on both his tastes buds and his now empty wallet.
For almost a month Danny had been chasing down the most feint ecto trace, but it was the only one he could feel.
Living between Amity and the ghost zone meant he had a surpluses of that feeling, to the point that it became background noise. It being gone felt like loosing a sense.
He grumbled to himself as he floated to an abandoned mansion on a mostly empty road. He was so hungry it made him dizzy to walk so he floated most places. Which absolutely didn’t help him get any human food, since everyone who saw him ran.
He expected the small ecto signature to be a liminal being, like Cujo in his puppy form or one of box ghosts boxes. He hadn’t expect a guy who bolted the second he saw him.
He was definitely liminal, Danny could feel it, but this guy was crazy. A black car sped through the road, the man and the kid he was with jumped in and they left.
Just like that his food source was gone. Danny paused a second and decided he wouldn’t call the guy a "food source" next time they saw each other.
Which thankfully for Danny was only about 10 minutes later.
His actions really shouldn’t be a judgment of character, he was sleep deprived and starving.
...
Insulting this dudes dimension and his ecto signature was definitely not a great start.
At least he looked more human now, his kingly power automatically trying to make his subject more comfortable. Maybe he could convince them to get him a sandwich, or just ham, whatever really, anything at all.
A man in a butler outfit cleared his throat, "I'll get him a meal, don't destroy the furniture." Did Danny say that out loud... maybe the butler had magic.
After eating a decent, but ecto free meal Danny was introduced to Jason (food), Damian (might be food?), Tim (not food), and Alfred (not food).
He hadn't bothered saying a word until he'd finished his plate. Once he had he told them about the ghost zone and the earth he was from, which they very quickly realised was not the same one. He hadn't mentioned being king of said dimension, nor the sole hero of the latter.
They in turn told him about the many different heros that inhabited this earth and the various planets that some of them came from. Danny could tell they weren't telling him everything, but his kingly power did prove to him that they hadn't lied to him, at least Jason and Damian hadn't.
Explanations were cut short when Jason stood up and Danny bolted to his side. Just being near the dude helped, he definitely had a leak or something going on.
"Look man, I'm starving and you are spilling out ecto at an insane rate." Danny said with a hand on the man's shoulder.
Jason looked at him like he'd grown a second head, which he hoped he hadn't because that took more energy than he was willing to expend. "You gunna explain what the fuck you just said?"
Danny had been king long enough to have studied up on the few halfas that had existed. Most of them hadn't survived very long after forming, either becoming a full ghost or their ghost core shriveled away and left them human... with some minor side-effects. "You must have come back from the dead with an unformed ghost core, contaminated with bad ectoplasm. The bad ecto isn't letting the core close up, it's like you have a leak."
"The Lazarus pit goo!" Tim shot up from his seat and ran off.
Danny remembered the forth ecto puddle he had visited, "I heard that name, some fruitloop in a cape was yelling about one of the ones I emptied."
"You emptied them?" Jason said with a perplexed look on his face.
"I was hungry." Danny, ever the gremlin, let them stay confused as he continued. "Anyway, you weren't dead long enough to form a solid core, then the pit goo, as you called it, seeped into the cracks and kept you too alive for it to finish, but too dead for it to fade."
"So I'm stuck like this?" Jason's core started oozing out waves of fear, stress and uncertainty.
"No, no." Danny focused on feelings of ease and calm as best he could while trying to desperately feed off of him. "Probably not, your core wasn't tainted until later so it wasn't flash formed like mine, and you're alive. I'm mostly guessing, but I have two theories." Danny extended his hand to a nearby couch (how many couches did these people have?), they both sat and Danny continued. "Once the contaminated ecto goo is gone you'll fade back to being 100% human since you can't make your own ecto, or..."
"or?"
"Or your core can't keep you alive and you... die fully." Danny didn't look at his eyes as he finished. "I can't guarantee your core will survive that either. It'll have to starve from lack of ecto before we know if your heart and brain are alive enough to keep you going, and with a core so weak we dont really know how well that'll go."
Although Jason was good at hiding his emotions from prying eyes, even as a far off, mangled version of a liminal being he was still part of the ghost king's ruling. Danny didn't mention it, he seemed like he was going through a lot and mind (emotion?) reading tended to make those not used to it uncomfortable.
Jason breathed in deep, "Alright, what's the first step to finding out if my body works without ecto?"
Danny tried not to smile at his future meal as he said. "We get rid of the ecto faster than the bad ecto is coming."
Danny and jazz were talking, about the appearance of a new halfa, and jazz had to tie danny down so he wouldnt float away on excitement.
Jazz was happy for her brother and curious to see the new halfa, she had the perfect way to, while messing with the gjost hunters a little.
It was time to reach out to her old college buddies
The Great Notes App Exodus: Like A Hit-and-Run
When jazz hits somebody on the road late at night, her first instinct is of course to call an ambulance.
… is what she would like to say, but she took one look at this boy covered in grave dirt and wearing funeral clothes and smelling like death and could only think of her brother.
Because maybe other people wouldn’t notice the mark of someone touched by death, but Jazz was liminal - and more than that, she was a princess of the realm of the dead. There were things, when you were so deeply connected to the ghost zone, that you just knew.
-
Danny, for his part, didn’t ever expect to become a mentor, but he can’t look at this budding halfa and let him struggle through all the things Danny had to learn on the fly at fourteen.
So.
He takes the traumatised, amnesiac fifteen-year-old under his metaphorical ghostly wing.
This will definitely only end well.
special challenge- each of these needs to be answered with a different fic
🌀
🌤
🌩
🌪
Ooooohkay! Big ask. Let's see if I can do your little extra challenge too while I'm at it, I've probably got enough stuff.
Under a read more, because oh dear god this got long so quickly.
So for the portal; I'll go with 'something I haven't written yet', rather than haven't posted, because when it comes down to it I have no idea if I'll write something, but anything I've not posted I'll post eventually, so yeah.
The fic is called Run (Yourself) To Death, it's a Danny PhantomxDC crossover, it was one of the first things I came up with for this fandom, and is a solid 90% the fault of Clockwayswrite's A Broken Sort of Normal because that's what introduced me to the 'quick death' ship and I found it very very cute. Idea was that Wally West doesn't end up dead after the big twister thing from Young Justice (I don't remember enough about that show to give more details) and instead sort of... falls sideways, I guess? Into a natural portal to the Infinite Realms riiiiiight as he also fades into the Speedforce and kinda ends up in this very fucked up state of not-quite-Halfa but not dead but not alive either, no connection to the Speedforce, and a developing Ghost Core. The entire story would be focused on Danny finding him and trying to help him get back to his reality, which is really really hard, and takes several years, ending with them in a relationship and also Wally as a super liminal/basically a Halfa by the time they figure it out.
I'm not entirely sure if I'm calling it Run Yourself To Death, or just Run To Death, which is why the 'yourself' is in brackets.
Sunny cloud!; favourite piece of dialogue... ok, I've got a few WIPs ongoing at the moment. Normally I'd go with the one closest to being posted, buuuuuut that fic has no dialogue. So I'll go for the next one on that list, which is Strange Aeons, the Tumblr fic.
(I spent a solid like, half an hour looking through my various WIPs trying to choose a line, because I couldn't for the life of me decide on one that I liked enough.)
“Wait, so if you’re not- related, or whatever, to the Lazarus Pit, then what are you?”
I mostly like this one because of the cliffhanger-ness of it. It's not the last line of that segment, but it's pretty close to it.
For the thundercloud; something funny/cracky from your WIP. This is hilarious, because my WIP 1 isn't really funny- or well, it is, but more in the context of irony, and WIP 2 is. Uh. Not there yet. WIP 3 and WIP 4 both have some alright ones, so I'll take this one from Parhelion, because why not.
That scent was incredibly familiar. "Did you traffic me to yourself?" He asked, incredulity too strong for nervousness. "You haven't been trafficked." Wayne replied automatically, before stilling. "Excuse me?"
Tornado! Or as it appeared on my screen, cloud with a ghost tail. Sum up a WIP with a few fic tropes/AO3 tags. Uuuh ok. Let's use Ornithology for this one, because it's currently my main WIP. I'd sum this one up with Found Family, Cryptid Batfam, Gotham City Is Weird, Gotham City Rolls With Everything, and Wingfic as my main ones. I love this fic so much. It's nearly complete, too, which is a yay.
And finally, umbrella rain. Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it... hmm. Ok this is a fun one for me, because usually if I have a fic concept, I intend to write it, no matter what? But I've definitely got something somewhere that's so old that I probably won't end up writing it just because I've got so much else to write...
digs into the box of WIPs and ideas
Ok let's pull out two fun ones that I have in this old as fuck list- specifically ones that I actually remember what the fuck that note means (looking at you, 'guitar riff bad life decisions (also AA)' like what the fuck does that mean Past Pix. What the hell is that.)
So one of them is labelled as 'Tarre Kamino aka fuck the SW timeline'. I mostly remember this one because I started writing this, and it is in fact the reason I have a Word document with my own Star Wars timeline in it, because I got so sick of trying to figure it out via the wikis that I made some guesses and made my own. I didn't write more than maybe a scene of it because it was all driving me mad, and also I couldn't figure out where to go with things, but the idea was that the Force Ghost of Tarre Vizsla is on Kamino fucking around and finding out, and basically doing his best to keep the clones safe in the face of gestures at common fanon Kamino stuff and also like, the amount of rage he's got at Jango Fett and the other Mandos on planet. Cool idea, could not figure out where to go with it aside from probably having him interact with Shaak Ti at some point, but I had a solid 10 years to get through to get there and was lost.
The second one is 'Kamino is v angery (4546B)', man I love my naming system for things, and this one had No Plot Just Vibes. Fans of Subnautica may recognise that little number-letter combo at the end, the idea was literally that Kamino had once been the planet 4546B from Subnautica. The only real idea I had to go from there involved the Leviathans, specifically the Sea Emperor, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with it outside of that.
Maybe I'll come back to them sometime.
looks up wow this is a long post, huh. Damn. Hope you enjoyed hearing all these rambles, and ta very much for the ask! It was fun to go digging through things for quotes and stuff.
Danny Phantom Ancient Vlad AU, how would Vlad feel about Canon Dark Dan + vice versa? (Since they both became evil, because they lost their families and friends + they both wish to destroy the world!) 😅
Well, he'd definitely see a boatload of himself in the boy & his heart would absolutely reach out for him.
Though, it does bring to mind the question of why Vlad hasn't just gone the Dan route yet. Theoretically, he absolutely could. In fact, he should be stronger than Dan unless there was just something different about the way that Danny was made that leads to more power in-general.
Which I tend to believe. My perspective is that Danny's innitial transformation into a Halfa was sort of a once in an eternity sort of thing. Like, think about it. He wasn't just sacrificed in order to open a portal to the land of the dead, he was literally standing inside of the spot where the portal opened. In my mind, in that moment, his body was atomized, his molecules infused with ectoplasm on an atomic level. While dead, his soul was immediately flooded with so much pure ectoplasm that a Core immediately formed, but not a ghost. Then, at the moment that the portal opened, his body was reconstructed around his newly-formed Core in such a way that he had a tiny bit of ectoplasm in each & every cell in his body, some even being wholly new in that they were entirely infused with ectoplasm. Then, with one final jolt of electricity, he was fully resuscitated & his Core was sealed to his body.
So, in this situation, he's fully alive, but half ghost. Whereas Vlad, if we're going with my plan, was sacrificed through magical means, but wasn't actively inside the portal itself as it was formed.
Either way, per my own hc, which you don't have to follow if you don't want to, this results in Vlad having been turned into something known as a Psychopomp, which sometimes can be a type of Gatekeeper Ghost.
Gatekeeper Ghosts are generally the spirits of those sacrificed to open a doorway between worlds, planes, universes, ect. These Gatekeeper Ghosts sort of act as built-in bouncers for the doorway as they are tasked with protecting it.
It's likely that whoever sacrificed him was attempting to basically use him to protect their new doorway to the Infinite. This would've made Vlad, essentially, their slave.
Now, Gatekeeper Ghosts can be created from the opening of almost any type of doorway to other planes & whatnot. However, Vlad is, specifically, a Psychopomp just like Danny. A Psychopomp specifically being the spirit of one who protects the doorways to the afterlife specifically.
Psychopomps are also supposed to help ferry the spirits of the dead from the Living Realms to the Infinite Realms (sometimes called the Hereafter) & monitor what ecto-ghosts come into the Living Realms & for how long.
Basically acting as border patrol.
Now, most only become Earthbound Spirits as opposed to Hereafter Ghosts (the ecto-based ghosts that we see in the show), & what Psychopomps do become ecto-ghosts tend to only be Level 1 ecto-ghosts who don't even have Obsessions.
If Vlad hadn't resurrected himself into a half-Lugat, meaning he resurrected himself to do something that he desired in life, then he would've become his murderer's tool, not controlled, but used for their own benefit. However, because he did & he was sacrificed to become a Psychopomp, his will fought with the task he was imparted with until his will won. At which point, he was resurrected.
Which, Lugats aren't technically members of the undead legion as they are able to reproduce & if they were, then they wouldn't be able to do that. Their resurrection is a true one, but much like any time someone comes back without divine intervention, he came back different.
Because of this, despite being a Psychopomp, he has not only an Obsession, but also a Fixation, which are reserved for Ecto-Liminals & Halfas.
When he brought himself back, the desire that did it was the desire to protect his family & keep them safe. This became his Obsession, which is what initially allowed him to not become a tool. Thus, turning him into a type of Tutelary or protective spirit.
However, much like with Dan, he then lost the central figures that his Obsession centered around. In order to save himself, his Core formed a new Obsession, one of revenge or retribution. Thus, turning him into a Remnant.
Thus, began his crusade.
How Liminal & Why
The following is based off of common hc within the dp x dc fandom.  Featuring Anger Management (Jason x Jazz)
We have liminality: people exposed to enough ectoplasm that something within them changes.
Jazz is liminal
Jason is liminal
Jazz has not died
Jason has died
Jazz has most likely consumed ectoplasm due to her parents trying to cook with the stuff
Jason has not likely consumed the stuff
According to the fandom, Amity Park has ambient ectoplasm due to the portal and/or AP being a natural thin spot. Wouldn't that make the rest of town liminal?
If Jazz is known to have sharper teeth, better vision, a little bit stronger but has not died is she the same level of liminal as Jason, who I repeat died and resurrected via the Pits (also fandom hc has corrupted ectoplasm)? For someone to be liminal, on a boundary, are they to be alive but still have heightened abilities?
If someone like Jazz is called liminal, as per fandom, she's NOT a halfa, nor borderline one just has Essense of ghost like abilities.
Let's say we take Jason's liminal status, and give him a little extra, a more borderline halfa, but still not quite. Some semblances of intangibility, invisibility, a more gliding effect instead of flight or hovering.
Jazz would be ghost powers liminal, while Jason would be halfa liminal? Maybe? Or since Jason remains in Gotham, as per fandom (mostly), is thin in ambient ectoplasm, it equals it out. Each are powers liminal.
Jazz Liminality:
Heightened senses (spacial awareness? Night vision? Hearing?)
Strength increase
Sharp canines/fangs
Scary eyes?
Sensing other liminals/ghosts?
Jason Liminality:
Heightened senses (spacial awareness? Night vision? Hearing?)
Strength increase
Scary eyes
Sensing other liminals/ghosts (could be partial to awareness--> particularly towards Danny, but not Jazz?)
Sharp canines/fangs?
Jazz grew up around ectoplasm, clean ectoplasm, possibly consumed the stuff, and Amity Park is ambient ectoplasm. She has not died, yet she has traits of something other, something more. She probably had to learn how to defend and fight fairly quickly in a short amount of time. Gaining more exposure in a short couple of years. Not as much as her brother who is a halfa due to high voltage accident with ectoplasm, but definitely more than the rest of town. Would possession count as increased ectoplasm exposure? Would she be liminal but just within her spirit, unless consumption or danger of BBP (Blood Borne Pathogen)?
Jason grew up in the streets, learning hard and quick before being picked up and trained. If Gotham has barely any ambient ectoplasm with an already volatile kid, would the rest of the city be the same? One would assume it's so tiny that there isn't enough to measure, nor make a difference, maybe it's why Gotham is violent the way it is? He died, violently, but due to reality altering he resurrected, then brought back to health, though wrong, from something called the Lazarus Waters. Corrupted but unknown why? Were the violent final moments enough to bring forth liminality, though by all purposes it should be minor? The only symptom being the scary eyes when under intense emotions, even increased strength, lashing out when angry (per fandom’s hc of the corrupted waters causing the intense lash out).
While Jazz (per fandom) has been around ectoplasm in large and constant doses her liminality is there, stronger due to being exposed by fresh non corrupted ectoplasm, and she's been possessed, though unknown if just possession is enough to cause exposure. Common liminality in her is increased senses, strength, canines being borderline fangs, eyes flashing green (sometimes), though unable to sense other liminals and/or ghosts. Sometimes she gets night vision and better hearing.
Jason (per fandom), just dying with some sort of ectoplasm is enough to become liminal, no matter how corrupted. Common liminality in him is flashing of eyes when angry, increased strength, senses, and can sense other ghosts, normally Danny (due to his halfa status?), but not commonly towards Jazz or other liminals. Another commonality in the fandom is the corrupted ectoplasm from the pits is purified by/with the help of Danny. If the once corrupted ectoplasm is now pure, he can become a halfa, but based on other authors he's not quite there. At this point he is more liminal than Jazz, despite her having been exposed more often and in greater amounts.
At this point I can say this. Dying and being resurrected can increase one’s liminal status but it also depends on the duration and amount of ectoplasm. As if there's something else there, but also something more. Is the turning point an element mix with ectoplasm, whether corrupted or not can create a potential halfa, but it should be activated to get a true halfa? As for the liminal's abilities, it stems from the individual's already set physical attributes.
Jason can already fight, how to survive the street, how to be hyperaware of one's surroundings. This is why he may be able to sense other ghosts. Compared to his liminal status, Danny is dangerous but at the same time he's still very young. While he still has to learn and train, for new abilities and strengths, the initial knowledge of how is already there. It's just building off from that.
Jazz isn't much of a fighter, well she is, but she doesn't need to use it all the time, thus when she becomes severely contaminated, it grows with her, with her strength. While that knowledge is there, the knowledge of being hyper-aware was never taught, because she never had to be until the ghosts became a bit more of a problem. It was never already learned, so she may become sensitive, but she might never get a sense of sorts.
Are the other Batfam liminal? Would Dick have a higher tolerance of electricity since he uses them? Would Tim have a connection with computers and technology similar to Technus, though not to the same extent? Bruce and/or Cass being able to blend into shadows a little better? What of Damian or Steph? How would liminality effect Duke?
Are Sam and Tucker liminal due to their extended possession from Undergrowth and Duulaman respectively? Sam having a better understanding of what plants need? While Tucker has a better knowledge of how monuments of Egypt were constructed?
Is Danny a meta before he died, or would he be a human that was contaminated. Because there is no way that Danny was human before he became a halfa in any shape, way, or form. I can see Maddie and Jack being slightly contaminated compared to Jazz and Danny because of their suits. But Jazz and Danny have no excuses of not being affected by the amount of ectoplasm that they were exposed to for so long.
My question is that is Danny a meta before he died? I do see a lot of stories of Danny being classified as a human and ghost but never a meta while Jazz is a Liminal, which is a weaker human-like version of a ghost in some cases. So, does that make Jazz a meta or someone closer to death? If that was the case, then Danny was definitely a Liminal before the portal opening either way if Jazz, who can be argued to be exposed for even a longer time, is a Liminal.
Unless you can say that both Jazz and Danny were more human the Liminal’s until the portal opened because it sends massive amounts of ecto-energy or the exposure of such large amounts of energy that it caused both the ectoplasm in their bodies to react. They had dormant powers until the portal opening (Danny more than Jazz) and was later awaken when the artificial making of a portal awoken their use of ectoplasm in their bodies.
Or they always had powers in the most limited and small amounts that it was considered normal. Like, Danny could wake up full of energy with only four hrs of sleep of how Jazz was the fastest of her class, etc. It’s the small things of their bodies reacting to the ectoplasm which could increases with the amount of exposer they both experience. Or it can dramatically increase when the protal open and so on. Idk just a brain ramble
I’ve been thinking more about Lori being liminal and what that means for her abilities. The actual definition of the word liminal is:  1.relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.  2.occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. Now in terms of the fandom― although I’m pretty sure most of the lore is actually fandom crafted at this point ―being liminal in the dp-verse means being adjacent to a ghost, or simply just ghost-like, while still being living.
It’s generally assumed that all of Amity Park is varying degrees of liminal due to being located on one of, if not the most, thinnest boundaries between the Living Realm and the Infinite Realms. The fact that Amity Park is filled with an excessive amount of ambient ectoplasm means that everyone has been exposed and contaminated by the stuff that sustains/makes up the ghosts’ “bodies”. Most people wouldn’t recognize that they were liminal though due to the fact that it’s more than likely just always been weird Like That in Amity Park even before the Fenton’s punched a hole through reality (and kept said hole open).
Danny is the most straight forward example of liminality, although even then his case is still pretty weird and an outlier. He best fits the second definition of the word liminal being that he is occupying a position of both sides of a boundary or a threshold, seeing that he is both dead and alive. He’s ghostly and an actual ghost; a halfa; a paradox. Even though he’s still half human, he possesses more or less the majority of the same ghost powers that all ghosts have.
(For the next bit refer to this list of ghost powers here)
There’s a lot of powers to work with and chose from, but being that Lori is still living, and merely affected by the ambient ectoplasm in the area, it’s more a matter of what stage of liminality she could be at that determines a bit more on the strength of any abilities she could possess. I like to think that the more aware one is of their liminality, the stronger it could be. In Lori’s case, she wasn’t aware of what liminality was until after she met Danny and got in contact with other ghosts, but she was aware that something about her was pretty different all the same.
Some general things like supernatural reflexes, stamina, and strength come into play. A bit more than the average human, but enough so that it still falls under the radar of having to play the “Don’t be suspicious” game.
Then we get into a touch of transformation, mostly augmented by her emotional state. Take a little dip into uncanny valley. A spark of acid green glow in the eyes, the sharpening of teeth that almost appear longer in certain light, the way shadows almost seem to converge to unnerve, elongate, and create menace in the air. And then you blink and it’s gone, it’s just Lori, angry that her shop is being invaded again.
And then there comes Danny, explaining Obsessions. They’re the main thing that causes a ghost to form, it’s basically what holds a ghost’s entire existence together. If they can’t fulfill it they can destabilize. Liminals have a chance they could develop an obsession, and can develop powers that fall in line with said obsession. Danny thinks Lori might have developed one. (Lori thinks it might be akin to Danny’s; a strong need to take responsibility and protect. But it’s far more aggressive in nature than Danny’s ever could be.)
Danny also explains that ghosts can have lairs.
Lori isn’t a ghost, but she’s pretty sure she’s subconsciously forged some kind of bond with her shop that made it like a lair. The building responds to her. It shifts and sways and bends in accordance to her reactions. And then one bad day, while being harassed by some ghost or maybe just some asshole customer, the whole thing starts to become goo. As if it were made out of ectoplasm and not stone and mortar. It inverts itself to trap the offender and spits them out on the street. It’s later discovered that she’s capable of doing this with other buildings, other objects, but it is it’s most strongest at her shop.
Transmutation with a hint of sentience, she would joke.
And it’s not that once she’s fully aware of her liminal status that she tries to hide it, per se, but the anti-ecto acts basically state that since she’s ecto-contaminated, she’s more or less as illegal as a ghost. So she has to still be careful that the GIW doesn’t catch on. Luckily people in Amity don’t really question anything because that’s basically just another Tuesday for everyone. So whether she punts someone out of her shop with inhuman strength, or the shop does it for her, well, *slides up sunglasses*, not gonna ruin their day.
