hiatus on my favorite show? obviously that means running headfirst into watching other longform content! like the hours long disney show retrospectives on youtube, those [blank] buddies dog movies, and glass onion i guess
#911 when will u return i need my life back#anyway i watched the search for santa paws a few days ago and now i’m conflicted on where to go next#bc 1) i’ve seen all of them before so it’s more about continuity between movies and 2) there is very confusing continuity to follow#the second santa paws movie is about the santa pups (children of santa paws obviously)#but santa buddies technically came out before santa paws and santa paws is a PREQUEL#bc santa buddies is about the buddies (air bud’s kids obviously) reteaching the meaning of christmas to puppy paws (santa paws’ son)#BUT HERES THE THING#puppy paws is NOT one of the four kids in the second santa paws movie#so unless puppy paws is revealed as a nickname in santa paws two and also is revealed that he eventually loses his way#you can’t watch santa paws 2 and then watch santa buddies and have it make sense bc we know all the santa pups by then and none are ‘puppy’#alternatively you can’t watch santa buddies and then watch santa paws 2 without thinking where tf is puppy paws#ykwim?#anyway. i also watched the wizards of waverly place retrospective (parts 1 and 2 now!) and they were so good i had to watch his mighty med#one too. i also watched some other dude’s mbav one and that was also a banger#so needless to say . i love hours long videos abt my favorite series from my childhood and apparently a specific talking dog movie franchise#and glass onion bc that’s the shit obviously#notes from the prime minister

I just finished watching Glass Onion for the third time so now you get to hear my rant about it but the details are out of order in the timeline because I’m lazy
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
When Miles lifts the gun off of Duke, we can actually see it pre-Blanc explaining it. The scene where the two hug you can see Miles take the gun and slip it into the back of his jeans.
Following the gun thing, we, the viewers actually SEE the gun itself (pre-Blanc’s explanation) when Miles goes back to the mini bar to put it in the ice bucket. Although it’s kind of hard to see it’s very clearly a gun but our eyes manipulate our minds into thinking it’s a drink because it is indeed a minibar.
They show how Miles places the drink in Dukes hand pre Blanc’s explanation but quickly distract us with the groups dynamic and Birdie.
Phillip is skeptical of Helen when she asks for Blanc, we can assume that he and Blanc have had negative run ins with people from jobs. Also Phillip might be judging Helen’s character, who she is, because he doesn’t want to put Blanc into a situation where he’s in true danger. He’s a detective not Batman.
Birdies mask at the beginning of the movie at the boat is just fucking chains across her face in diamond pattern.
Blanc doesn’t have a gag reflex when the dude in the white suit puts Miles “covid vax” down his throat. (Bc he’s 🏳️‍🌈)
Andi, when she first comes up with the idea for Alpha and starts working with Miles, is wearing dark colors. The dark blue pinstripe suit, her completely black ensamble when we see her at the Glass Onion (the bar). But when she’s challenging Miles she’s wearing both Black and white. At the trial she’s wearing a light almost off white suit. Why is this important? Because what color is Helen wearing when she shuts miles down? White. The color white is, in itself, a color that symbolizes Miles downfall.
Connecting back to the white idea, Whiskey is wearing all white (her bathing suit) when she reveals crucial information about Miles giving her the Taurus necklace for her birthday. (Which leads to his downfall when Blanc puts 2+2 together that he killed Andi)
“Im really bad at dumb things” -Blanc. The reason he didn’t catch on to what was going on with Miles earlier was because Miles is stupid. Miles is so dumb that he fucking befuddled Blanc because Miles is so stupid.
Blanc isn’t uncomfortable about his arousal around Birdie when she put her legs up on him while Miles talks about being ‘Disrupters’. He’s uncomfortable because he’s GAY and has a BOYFRIEND/HUSBAND.
There’s a bunch of owls and small trinkets of birds in Birdies room.
The movie, at the very beginning, with Miles mystery invitation box thing hints at where the envelope is hidden. The fibonacci sequence on the box has the center blocked out in black, where we will later see in the film is red which is where Miles is hiding the envelope. For fucks sake the movie even goes out of its way, with Dukes mother, to point out the sequence. (“The first one’s a fibonacci sequence” -Dukes mom).
During the dinner Whiskey is wearing the same golden chain body jewelry that Birdie was wearing earlier at the pool. So this could mean two things: 1. They have the same chain and 2. Whiskey borrowed the chain from Birdie.
Now connecting to my first point about the chain jewelry above. The reason why Miles likes Whiskey, despite her sleeping with him for the sake of Dukes channel, is because Whiskey reminds him of younger Birdie. Birdie even talks to Peg about how dazzled and amazed Miles was when he first met her and how she wishes it was like that again. Then when they’re smashing the glass sculptures, the first thing Whiskey smashes is a sculpture of a bird. Hence smashing Miles perception of her as another person he can use like he used Birdie.
“You have him turn around so he can have deniability” -Aaron Burr in Hamilton (Basically what Blanc was thinking when he walked out of the room)
When Blanc is trying to light his cigar in the “Smokeless garden” the reason the alarms go off is because because just the smoke and small flames from Blanc’s cigar could cause “another Hindenburg”.
The ending scene with Helen and Blanc after Blanc asks her if she’s ready to go home, Helen’s sitting stance mimics the Mona Lisa. Miles said “It all started with her” in reference to his success being inspired by the Mona Lisa. But it all ended with Helen and her stance at the end mimicking the Mona Lisa is meant to represent that. The beginning and end of Miles Bron.
Blanc refers to alchol as offering Helen “some courage”. Ofc as we all know alcohol is commonly referred to as “Liquid Courage”.
We should’ve known Miles was the killer for this simple reason: The glass he handed to Duke. Duke dying holding Miles’s glass is literally like a signed note. Duke died with Miles name literally written on the crime scene.

hello!! for that ask game, 3 and 17? :D
hi hello!!!! I already answered 17, so I’ll just talk about a couple of my favorite movies :)))
1. The Secret of Moonacre (2009)
Jesus Christ I love this movie. It’s based on a book that is bad, but it was made into a movie that is my favorite thing in the world, me and my sister watch it ALL the time.
There’s just so much to love about it. It’s a fantastical movie that I don’t want to spoil, but it’s got magic, it’s got 2008 CGI, it’s got fairytale worlds, it’s got so many queer undertones that it’s insane, it’s got historically inaccurate but stunning costumes, sets and scenery to DIE for, some of my favorite scenes in movie history just for the whimsy of it all, and Tim Curry.
The main character Maria is LITERALLY just me, and very Jemima coded, and you’ll see why if you watch the movie, I cannot recommend it enough. Someday I should do fanart
And it’s got this gayass mcr teenage guyfailure silly boy with eyeliner who my sister clocked as gay the MINUTE he walked on screen.
(Why do people keep doing that to me. First with this, then my friend with Misto (HOW DID HE DO THAT??? IT WAS THE FIRST LINE!!!))
2. Clue (1985) and Glass Onion (2022)
I LOVE detective and crime movies that are focused on shenanigans, aesthetics, and actually SOLVING the crimes. So much of true crime to me is just ‘and then the violent and misogyny person ate 8 children ’ like okay. Thank you.
I actually can’t stand it and that’s why I like murder mysteries more than thrillers.
Clue is hysterical and has shaped my humor to an insane degree, my dad and I quote it each other all of the time. The murder mystery element is incomprehensible but the shenanigans are so good that you don’t even notice the entire movie is nonsense until the end. 10/10 no notes.
Glass Onion is a masterpiece. Eat the rich <3. Also they should keep making Knives Out movies forever.
3. Wait Till Helen Comes (2016) and Bluebeard (2009)
OBSCURE INDIE FILM GIRLIES UNTIE!!! I’m a huge fan of movies that are spooky, but not horror, and these movies delivers on both accounts, at least for me. Also they’re free on YouTube :))) double win!!!!
WTHC was one of my FAVORITE books as a kid, (alongside like. Dork diaries and Frozen Charlotte), so when I saw it was a movie on YouTube I lost my mind. Watched it in the middle of the night at my great-aunts house while writing horror fanfiction. Truly the teenage dream.
It’s SO crazy to me, atmospheric, makes almost no sense, but is still one of my favorites.
Bluebeard is Bluebeard :)) so so good, in French, watched it for the first time about two weeks ago? And my computer started screaming at me. Like actual screams. Super creepy. I love the acting, I love the ambiguous ending that is SUPER dark and abstract. What was going on there. I love it.

Skyfall is a good movie. Frankly, all the Daniel Craig bond films leading up to it were good movies. Pivoting from the 06 Casino Royale’s re-contextualization of spies in the post-9/11 geopolitical landscape, Skyfall is about the consequences of the wars we fought before and the mistakes that came back to haunt us following the actions we took in those wars.
Skyfall was released in 2012, 11 years after the twin towers fell and 9 years after the 03 invasion of Iraq. We’d killed Bin Laden and now had to deal with ISIL, who’d not yet bombed the Ariana Grande concert but had at this point grown in power as a result of the US invasion in 03. Setting up the villain of the film (and his horrific disfigurement) as directly the result of MI6 decisionmaking only for him to come back and blow up MI6′s iconic HQ is evidence enough that Skyfall is a retrospective on a decade of war on terror that seems to have done nothing.
There are no better ways to show how tired and old Bond (and the empire he represents) is than to have him fail his fitness tests while in Winston Churchill’s old bunker. A waning icon of a waning empire in the decrepit remains of said empire. It’s a perfect exploration of the intersection of postcolonialism and the war on terror.
Given that the last Daniel Craig film I’d seen before starting Skyfall was Glass Onion, I watched Skyfall with the “I’m so glad that Craig stopped playing Bond so that now he can dress in sweaters in fun movies” criticisms in mind and frankly, I found they fell flat. For one thing, Bond does wear sweaters in this (very fun!) movie (as well as a cute blue adidas tracksuit with matching shoes!), but on top of that I’m starting to realize this criticism of the modern bond franchise (and other films like these) comes from the sort of people who still use the word “grimdark” for their media criticism. Just like those who unironically use “dudebro,” their contributions to serious discussion are limited. Doubly so for Skyfall because this movie is fantastic and balances tone elegantly.
I will admit that Skyfall takes a serious tone when addressing things like “the fall of the 20th century western imperialist old guard” and “thematic explorations of the war on terror and the mistakes of those gambling with the lives of millions” (If you were to try and write those into something finally similar to Trolls 2 it’d be difficult though not impossible) but I will argue that the movie is still self aware enough to understand itself as a pulpy adventure film.
This isn’t Moonraker or anything, but Skyfall is self aware enough to know what beats to hit. The villain monologues and then challenges Bond to a flintlock pistol shooting match. They keep the main bad guy in a dorky sci-fi glass prison cell. The action finale has goons (did I mention that there are goons?) showing up in a helicopter to attack a castle. They even pull the old DB5 out of mothballs so Bond can threaten the ejection seat trick. Bond fights off an evil lizard in a casino at one point. Imagine the movie in 60s Technicolor and the bones of the plot are just as camp as Goldfinger.
The movie is clearly self-aware and plays into the campier story conventions of a genre the franchise it belongs to basically started. It just doesn’t have characters shrug and go “*gulp* he’s behind me isn’t he?” Instead of lampshading the more ridiculous aspects of pulp characters from the 60s and 70s, Skyfall is so darn earnest about how cool these are. It’s self aware yet charming in its seriousness! (Jots down “James Bond Skyfall = Solarpunk?” into margin of notebook and is never heard from again)
Movies like Captain Marvel can’t say the same, and only half of that is because you can’t write a critique of Bush and Obama era imperialism while also shilling for the USAF. It’s because they can’t be serious in their ridiculousness that they end up being less campy (ashamed of truly trying) and less adult (too silly to take seriously) and ultimately less fun than movies like Skyfall.
That’s ultimately what Skyfall is. A Pulpy country-hopping spy flick about modern spies operating in shadows that are getting more cynical with every conflict. It’s not Dr. No but it’s immense fun that explores themes few other franchises are tackling these days. That’s worth a lot more than whatever Ryan Reynolds/The Rock spy film is dealing these days. And Daniel Craig got to wear a dark powder blue tracksuit too.

Glass Onion is a fun movie. It promises a fun, colorful, campy homage/parody of the murder mystery genre, and it delivers exactly that. Clearing that bar (delivering what is promised) is both a bare minimum and something that projects on the areas of my interest have failed to clear for the past few years.
So, yeah, I watched Glass Onion and I enjoyed it very much. After about a day of letting the experience sink in, I think I can understand both the passionate praise and the passionate loathing. For the most part.
Glass Onion is a sequel to Knives Out, and as first sequels go, it's pretty good. It's not the exact same story of the last one, but with different characters, even if there are similarities (i.e. the working class main heroine), and just that makes it better than at least half of every sequel I have ever watched. But it's also not as good as Knives Out. It's definitely NOT better. It's not terrible, it's not a huge drop in quality, but it isn't as good.
While Knives Out has a good pacing, where the rhythm of the story starts slow and mounts higher and higher towards the ending, Glass Onion has a very slow beginning, only really starting to pick up about the 45 minute mark (in a movie that is 2 hours and 20 minutes long, I really think they could have shaved 20 minutes off the beginning of the film and it would have made for a tighter experience). We get a few minutes of big tension and then it slows down again to fill us in on the backstory (here I feel Rian Johnson's infatuation with plot twists is a drawback; considering the twin sister plot is very cliched -which is fine in a story that hinges around the most obvious explanations being right- I feel the story would have benefited from the audience knowing from the get go that Helen was posing as Cassandra. It would have been more traditional, but it would have added much to the initial tension, proverbial bomb under the table and all). The climax and ending of the movie IS long, but I think that is fine because it is focusing on the catharsis we are experiencing vicariously through Helen (this is one of the reasons why I will forever defend Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Sometimes a movie can be just about catharsis, and if it delivers that, then it hasn't failed. I digress).
Characters. While both the characters of Knives Out and Glass Onion are rich entitled assholes, there's a variety and richness to the ones in the former that is absent in the latter. Harlan's family in KO shares their heavy dependence on his money, but in different ways. Harlan's daughter possesses more depth of feeling and strength of character than his son. The son is resentful because he's a little man. The daughter in law and the son in law are both leeches, but their ways of facing life and their relationship to the family are very different. The Gen Z grandchildren are radically opposite in their political views, but both engage in completely performative forms of activism. Ransom's attitude serves a completely different form of dishonesty and laziness than the rest.
In Glass Onion... the assholes are just stock characters. Very much like the game Clue that the movie pokes fun at, they are the scientist, the senator, the passé diva, the overworked secretary, the trashy entrepeneur and his trophy wife. They are all opportunistic, worthless assholes, but there's little to differentiate them and justify their inclusion other than filling the screen and adding star power. What does make the difference, character wise, between Peg and Whiskey? What does Lionel really want out of the money and power he seeks? What has Claire of distinctive other than wearing beige?
Speaking of which, costumes. They are fun, eye catching and suited to the characters... for the most part. We get that Claire is beige, we don't need to have her LITERALLY wear only beige all the time. You can throw some white and navy blue or black in the mix and you'll still get the message across without making it cartoonish. Benoit Blanc! Look, his costumes are a lot of fun, but I have a hard time believing the man who dressed in the most plain and boring colors possible in Knives Out just dresses like that in summer. I'm certainly not demanding he wears only neutrals, but Glass Onion!Blanc gives the vibes of someone that would dress in winter as the male version of Linda.
Glass Onion is not a perfect movie. But it remembers that light is an essential part of film (the sequence under the lighthouse lighting is beautiful) and in that way it looks classy. It remembers that plot holes and inconsistencies need to be papered over instead of highlighted: the plot of the movie hinges on Cassandra being both a good reader of human nature (knowing which people will connect well with other people) and a terrible reader of human nature (the email is one of the most stupid moves conceivable), a clever, foreseeing entrepreneur (she was the one to have the brilliant concept of Alpha that made Bron a billionaire) and a person who cannot look ahead to the future (she doesn't ensure she has a paper trail that supports her intellectual property in the company, even living in a post social-network world). The movie is aware of this, so it heavily moves the focus onto Helen and her revenge quest. It remembers that audiences would rather be pandered to than abused and belittled (YMMV as to how much the "burn the rich" message can ring as genuine in a 40 million dollar movie or as just panem et circenses). It remembers that satire needs to make the caricature of the satirized recognizable and realistic enough, and that a movie in a genre is indebted to the genre and cannot act like it has invented it (I'm staring at you, Don't Worry Darling, on both accounts). It understands that attention to detail can elevate mediocre material and that people do notice, even if they cannot articulate it (this goes from the infamous Starbucks coffee cup on the set of GoT to the absurd carelessness and sameness of late MCU productions).
And that is, sadly, nowadays, a somewhat tall order to fulfill. So I understand why people are going crazy over this movie. I also understand why that irritates the hell out of others.
In the end, Glass Onion is a fun movie. And that was enough for me.

I saw “Glass Onion” a few days ago with one of my cousins. Just some miscellaneous thoughts:
1) I hope Jeremy Renner has seen the movie. If he hasn’t, he definitely should once he gets out of the hospital.
2) Some of the cameos were…random. Like, yes, the role of “vaccination checker” definitely needed the talent of Ethan Hawke to bring out the complex layers of the role. But seriously, it feels like some of the actors were just bored and had a free day to help Rian Johnson out.
3) I did like how the movie was structured. It was sort of a pseudo-Rashomon where instead of conflicting accounts, we were just not seeing the full picture because we were not aware of a different character’s POV. It’s actually clever.
4) If I had to nitpick, I was a little annoyed that Benoit Blanc was written in a way that he just happens to know the answer to everything. Yeah, I know, he’s the detective, but the way he’s written in the movie makes him feel omnipotent. It’s fun to figure the mystery out along with the character, so it’s a little disappointing when the mystery is just solved for the audience, if that makes sense. It’s like they’re telling us what was happening instead of showing, which isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, but can still be annoying.
5) My cousin: “Jessica Henwick was just vibing in the movie lol. Everyone else had these big dramatic roles, and then there’s Jessica just showing up every now and then.”
6) Rian Johnson claims this movie isn’t about Elon Musk…but I feel Musk had to have inspired this movie a teensy bit. Maybe that’s just Rian covering his ass so he doesn’t get sued for defamation.
7) Amogus
8) If I had to pick a cast member who stood out, I’d obviously pick Janelle Monae. But Batista definitely gets second place, he really killed it as Filipino/Greek Andrew Tate.
9) Okay, another nitpick. I liked the overall movie, but I did not like the “look how quirky I am!” tone that Johnson was going for. It’s fine for the first third of the movie, but just becomes obnoxious as the movie goes on. I would’ve preferred a more mature, grounded mystery, but hey, that’s just me.
Overall review: As someone who didn’t care for “Knives Out” (I think I gave that movie a letter grade of C or C-), I thought “Glass Onion” was a massive improvement. The mystery was better thought out, the characters were more engaging, and, aside from Jessica Henwick, the cast was better utilized. I just would’ve preferred less quirkiness and a climax that wasn’t just Daniel Craig explaining the mystery. So, for a letter grade, I give it an A-.

More miles bron headcanons please!!💗🫶
Here’s a part 2 of headcanons!
Tumblr media
-Miles definitely would serenade you. Sometimes, when you get back home from shopping or a trip, he’ll be inside, strumming the chords to your guys’ song (which would totally be Glass Onion by the Beatles.)
-Long walks on the beach, barefoot.
-All for skinny dipping, especially at night. Either in the pool or on the beach, he enjoys both.
-Once you tell him you think him wearing that necklace is attractive, rest assured knowing it’s never leaving his neck.
-LOVES PLAYING WITH YOUR HAIR! If he’s anxious, angry, or just in a clingy mood, you already know he’s going to be combing his fingers through your hair.
-Off the island, it’s date night every night. He will take you to every different kind of restaurant in town.
-With you, he learns to stop and smell the roses. He takes everything slower, making sure to enjoy every moment.
-Movie night at least once a week, but it happens more often than you think. Sometimes he’ll sacrifice his sanity and let you watch a cheesy rom-com, and you’ll reward him by letting him pick the next movie, usually some sort of action or horror movie, which he watches just to have you bury your face into his chest during the scary parts.
-First fight? You calmly leave the room, grab a bag and pack some clothes. By the time you were done packing, he’s already begging for you to stay and apologizing.
-He wants to involve you in his company. He’ll ask your thoughts on plans for what’s next, and how to improve what’s already been done. You’re kind of his reality check, saying “Well, realistically…”
-He makes sure to keep your relationship as far out of the public eye as he can, because he knows you get nervous when people start vicious rumors about you.
-If you have to go out in public together, disguises are in place. Usually large sunglasses, hats, and sweatshirts work well.
-If you’re ever in public and Miles notices you’re starting to get nervous, he moves his hand to your lower back to provide a sense of safety for you.

what are some of your favorites movies :0 i want to know everyone’s different tastes
That's a good question!
Like we've said before, collectively its Inside Out (funny I know) but another collective one is Coraline! We also all like Laika in general.
but individually I don't know if a lot of us have ever really thought about it? It might be easier to also include shows, actually if that's allowed?
Let's go down the line with what we know on those terms!
Alan: Care Bears Movie 2: A new Generation
Brandon: Steven Universe: The Movie
Chara: 9, Heathers
Chel-C: Deadpool Trilogy
Clara: The Little Mermaid (Disney in general, especially classic)
Clyde: The Labyrinth
Colbie: South Park, Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Kickass 1&2
ENA: Foodfight
Entrapta: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Ethan Lee: Rat Movie: Mystery of the Mayan Treasure ( and the sequel! )

2023 Media consumption
God tier: media that invoked blorbo-induced euphoria, mini-obsession, or just haunt me
White Cat Legend (大理寺日志, Dali Court Journal) - donghua, seasons 1 and 2. The new vice minister of the imperial court of criminal justice is, unfortunately, a cat demon. Tang Dynasty workplace comedy/political intrigue. Lovely animation, sick fight scenes, and catboys.
Scissor Seven (刺客伍六七) - donghua, seasons 2-3. Netflix summary: "Seeking to recover his memory, a scissor-wielding, hairdressing, bungling quasi-assassin stumbles into a struggle for power among feuding factions." Season 1 was just ok at best, season 2 was great, season 3 was phenomenal, season 4 was meh.
Derkholm duology by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
God Troubles Me / Hanhua Riji (汉化日记) - donghua. Cringefail loser girl Su Moting, her cringefail smartphone god, and her cringefail cat (demon) have to save the world. But first she has to go to work. And get takeout. And watch dramas. The premise sounds SO cringe but it's well-executed and hilarious. And actually a pretty sharp but good-humored window into the delights and horrors of modern everyday life in china.
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt (reread). At the peak of the California gold rush, hitmen Charlie and Eli Sisters are hired for a job that Eli is liking less and less. 1st-person perspective of a stone-cold killer, where it turns out the killer is just Some Guy. Who is kind of awkward. And pathetic. And maybe not very bright.
Gobelins graduation animated shorts: "Chroniques de l'Eau Salée" (2021), "Last Summer" (2022), and "Go Fishboy" (2022). Available to watch on YouTube. Got caught up on 2021 and 2022 and these are the ones that will haunt me.
Ranma 1/2 by Rumiko Takahashi - manga (reread). Teenage martial artist is cursed to transform into a hot girl whenever he's splashed with cold water. Still some of the funniest and most deranged comedy I've ever read.
"Golden Age" - short story by Naomi Novik set in the Temeraire universe. Hilarious and delightful Feral Temeraire AU.
Just ok: media that I didn't hate, and maybe even enjoyed
A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore
Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings by Christopher Moore
Glass Onion (2022) dir. Rian Johnson
Puss in Boots: the Last Wish (2022) dir. Joel Crawford
Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead
Witch's Business by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones (reread) - Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, Mixed Magics, The Pinhoe Egg
Firebirds: An Anthology of Original Fantasy and Science Fiction, ed. Sharyn November. Faves: "Beauty" by Sherwood Smith, "Little Dot" by Diana Wynne Jones, and "Remember Me" by Nancy Farmer.
All Systems Red (异星危机) by Martha Wells, Simplified tr. by 黎思敏
All Saints Street (万圣街) - donghua, seasons 1-3
Moira's Pen by Megan Whalen Turner
Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
The Game by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Selected Discworlds: Thief of Time, Unseen Academicals (reread)
The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greer (reread)
The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells by Andrew Sean Greer
"Louise", Gobelins 2021 graduation animated short. Pretty good, but not god tier.
The Time of the Ghost by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Less by Andrew Sean Greer. Most of it was a slog, but the ending was wonderfully tender.
The Merlin Conspiracy by Diana Wynne Jones (reread)
Secondhand Souls by Christopher Moore
The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories by Susanna Clarke
Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Spinning by Tillie Walden
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (reread)
The Mermaid (美人鱼) - movie (2016)
Exhalation by Ted Chiang. Fave: Exhalation
Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang
Motorcity - cartoon (rewatch)
Sing 2 - movie
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - movie
White Cat Legend (大理寺日志) manhua through chapter 186
A Monster in Paris - movie (rewatch)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - movie
Lionboy trilogy by Zizou Corder: Lionboy, The Chase, and The Truth (reread)
The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw
Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (封神第一部:朝歌风云) - movie
Our Flag Means Death - season 2
Skellig by David Almond (reread). Even more unsettling and magical than I remembered.
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (人渣反派自救系统) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
Savvy by Ingrid Law (reread)
The Silent Boy by Lois Lowry
Golden Age and Other Stories by Naomi Novik. "Golden Age" alone was amazing. Every thing else: meh.
Wonder by RJ Palacio except that the ending sucked
蓝溪镇 (Lanxi Zhen/Blue Creek Town) - manhua (reread), through chapter 112
Translation State by Ann Leckie
Disliked and often DNF'd
House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds
A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro
Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley
Phoenix Rising by Karen Hesse
Palimpsest by Catherine Valente
Knives Out (2019) dir. Rian Johnson
The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nhi Vgo
Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots. Genuinely creative concept, enjoyable characters, and horrifying (affectionate) ending! Writing was just very, very bad.
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore
Stowaway by Karen Hesse
Nirvana in Fire (狼牙榜) - ok objectively it was fine. It was just SO long that I started losing patience at multiple points.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes on (2021) dir. Dean Fleischer Camp
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor
Suzume - anime movie
Fairies Albums (百妖谱) - donghua
Link Click (时光代理人)- donghua
The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn by Tri Vuong - webcomic
Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo
Journey to the West: Demons Strike Back (西游伏妖篇) - movie
Labyrinths: Selected Stories and Others Writings by Jorge Luis Borges
The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro
Frozen 2 - movie
Logan - movie
The Three Sisters of Tenmasou - movie
The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Nothing new.
Bewilderment by Richard Powers
Nimona (2023) - movie
Prophet by Helen MacDonald and Sin Blache
One Piece - the live action Netflix series
Good Omens season 2
Birdwing by Rafe Martin
Blue Eye Samurai - netflix cartoon
Haven't You Heard I'm Sakamoto - anime
System Collapse by Martha Wells
The Cay by Theodore Taylor (reread)
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
Bottoms (2023) - movie
Daily Life of the Immortal King (仙王的日常生活) - donghua
Witch King by Martha Wells. Actually I enjoyed the Kai/Bashasa storyline a lot. The present-day storyline I found extremely boring. Which was unfortunate because it was more than half the book.
The King's Avatar (全职高手) - donghua
The Apothecary Diaries - anime
Assorted nonfiction
The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May. Bored. DNF
Alone in the Wilderness (2004) - dir. Dick Proenneke. Documentary of Proenneke's year spent living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. Neat look at one dude building a cabin, furniture, and all his accompanying household implements by hand.
A River Lost: The Life and Death of the Columbia by Blaine Harden. The human and environmental significance of the Columbia dam system.
Gifted Earth: The Ethnobotany of the Quinault and Neighboring Tribes by Douglas Deur. Guide to key native species and their traditional uses.
A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life by George Saunders. Four classic Russian short stories with accompanying technical analysis of their narrative construction. Great look at the process of writing and analyzing stories.
Animals Make Us Human by Temple Grandin - animal behavioral psychology
Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin - more animal behavioral psychology
Crying in HMart by Michelle Zauner. DNF. Felt like the book could have been 1/4 of its length. Mostly nothing new.
Wood in American Life: 1776-2076 by WG Youngquist and HO Fleischer. Wood use in America. Really makes you realize just how many things are now made out of plastic but used to be wood. And how much more difficult and expensive it was to make and replace objects.
Authentic Diversity: How to change the workplace for good by Michelle Silverthorn. Concise and nicely concrete. Would be a good starting place for an executive.
Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O'Neil - how some big data algorithms reinforce preexisting inequality, and how to improve them.
The Relationship Cure by Joan Declaire and John M. Gottman. The classic originator of the "bids for attention" approach. Pretty good, most helpful was the part where it identifies the styles of responses.
Essential Retirement Planning for Solo Agers: A Retirement and Aging Roadmap for Single and Childless Adults by Sara Zeff Geber
A Wolf at the Table by Augusten Burroughs
the excellent hyperlocal nature guidebook I bought after encountering the author at the mall
Your Money or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence, by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez. 2018 ed.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m currently riddled with Covid and the coughing has kept me awake. I’m bored but too weak and sick to do anything other than sit on this couch and think. And so now y’all gotta deal with it. And with the no doubt numerous typos.
Like many other neuro-spicy folks, I have a very strange memory where I can remember insane details about shit that absolutely does not matter while simultaneously forgetting where my keys/phone/glasses are, usually while they are physically on my person.
It often feels like at least 3 of the 27 tabs open in my brain at all times are hitting random on every piece of media I’ve ever witnessed - movie, tv, music, play, video game etc - and sometimes one of those tabs decide to be the main one seemingly for no reason.
I am going to share one of the reoccurring tabs.
This is old. Very old.
Tumblr media
We were poor. We lived in a poor neighborhood. My neighbor had a PS1 but only like 2 games. We would save money up and rent games. But he would also find free demo disks, where you could play like 1-3 levels of a game, and we would just play those over and over.
Out of all of those, this is the one that has stuck with me, 25 years later. I will be doing the most inane shit, the dishes, driving to work, taking a shower. Actively watching a show.
Then this will take over.
Kids, this is Parappa the Rapper. And this video is the extent of what I know about the game because again - this was on the demo and it’s all we had. Literally have never played anything beyond this. I assume the goal was to rap good enough to get to the next stage but I have no idea what the story was. Was it just a never ending set of battle raps? Did he have to rap to impress bad guys in order to defeat them?
I’ll never know. But what I do know is that if you are around me and just say the magic words “Kick. Punch. It’s all in the mind…” I’m gonna bust out the whole fucking song. All of it. Both Master Onion and Parappa’s parts.

Random Knives Out/Glass Onion Comparisons
Knives Out is full of flashbacks, the first half of the movie is basically 2 days, the interview day and the night everyone describes in their flashback. Marta’s in the longest one. Glass Onion has a few tiny ones but mostly there’s one big flashback in the middle of the movie. Knives Out starts with “there’s a suspicious death” and Marta’s big flashback gives us what we think is the truth of the mystery but only turns out to be part of the truth (in someone else’s words it changes the genre of the movie). We go from “whodunit?” to “oh we know who did it can she get away with it?” Glass Onion how ever starts with the set up of a potential murder, “a murder mystery game is planned and someone actually dies” is a common plot point and Blanc flat out tells Miles that’s what he’s expecting. It tells us that Blanc is here to prevent a crime. And true, murder does happen, and then is followed by a flashback that gives us the truth and reframes everything we just saw into “a murder has already happened and he’s here to solve it.” Both of movies use identical strategies to change the movie but it changes in different ways because they’re different movies.
Someone wrote that “Andi used to tell me the truth” is kinda a humanizing moment for Miles; you might not necessarily feel sorry for him but it does do that. It’s completely ruined later by the discovery that he killed her. I think something similar happens when Ransom tells Marta that his mother made her company with a big loan from her father. Maybe it doesn’t make us like him maybe it does, but it makes him seem less of an asshole than the others, which is also ruined when he turns out to be the killer.
What character traits Marta and Helen have that allow them to win are established early on. Marta doesn’t play to win, she plays her own game. Helen refuses to play the game and just smashes her way to the center. Interestingly these traits might lead to failure if they switched places. If a tragedy is where traits that aren’t necessarily flaws become them because of the situation then this is the opposite; where they win because of these traits.

sorry for the random anon. i’ve just been thinking abt this forever. i know it won’t happen but like. if marvel’s not gonna let them be together for the whole next captain america movie, fine, whatever, but they could at least give us a tidbit. like, i haven’t seen the movie glass onion but i vaguely know how it begins and i think the next captain america movie should begin kind of the same way. w sam getting a call and being like “honey i have to go!” cut to bucky in an apron with a mixing bowl like “okay be safe!” and then he’s not in the rest of the movie because he’s at home baking while his husband goes out and saves the world. please tell me you see the vision.
I totally see it 😂 there was a similar headcanon floating around before fatws aired that it starts with sam and bucky getting ready for a mission and it looks like 2 different apartments at first but then they squeeze past each other in the bathroom 🤭
