Help! This is killing me lol... Can anyone explain why Eliot is wearing a shoulder harness when retrieving Quinn from Kiev and in the "Batcave" for debriefing? I'll accept theories, too (god knows I have a few), but if anyone can legitimately explain the cause, I'd really appreciate it.

For me, as much as I adore the theme of travel companions, henghill is more of a "someday" thing in that regard. I love Boothill being a weird loner Galaxy Ranger rather than a Nameless- man is undomesticated and belongs sleeping in the cargo holds of supply ships, threatening silence out of anyone that tries to report him. Let him be wild and free!!
I would LOVE it if Boothill just hitched a short ride off Asdana to whatever the Express' next destination is, though!
Like maybe the Express decides to stick around Penacony for a while, the same way they do other destinations, and Boothill is there anyway to investigate Oswaldo Schneider. It's rare to find a planet where the IPC is present, but doesn't actually have a lot of power; he can't pass this opportunity up!
And in that time, he sees a lot of Dan Heng.
Boothill gets text messages asking him to the quieter parts of the Dreamscape (he threatened and made a scene - it's called standing up for your rights, Dan Heng was given a room with a Dreampool by The Family for helping root out The Order) or mostly to the Express, where Dan Heng curiously asks him about Paths, about aeons and Emanators, The Rangers, all the worlds he's seen and places he's been.
Boothill isn't really surprised the first time they spend an entire night talking and discussing- after all, they'd chattered a lot that first day they met at the bar in the Reverie! But in talking so much, of course the topic of home comes up.
Dan Heng asks about Boothill’s homeworld.
Boothill tells Dan Heng it's gone now, and changes the subject.
Boothill asks about Dan Heng's past, before the Astral Express and the Nameless.
Dan Heng freezes up and closes off, and changes the subject.
In yet another moment of tacit understanding, neither of them ask again.
But this continues, all throughout their stint in Penacony, finding each other and seeking the other out for no reason other than good company. Dan Heng adds ridiculous amounts of data to the archives that Boothill dictates to him. They both know he could get that information elsewhere if he really wanted. Boothill finds he's kinda happy he doesn't.
And Boothill is someone who's hard to keep up with. He knows he is, and he has no problem with it. It's part of what makes him excel as a Galaxy Ranger. But there's something fun about how Dan Heng just rolls with it, and so effortlessly! Boothill finds something shady going on, grabs a guy who was preying on people, and has this dude held up by the collar with his feet swinging while he cackles right in his face, when Dan Heng shows up.
Boothill says they're just having a friendly chat. He makes zero effort to hide what he's actually doing. Boothill's new friend pleads for Dan Heng to help him, please! This guy's crazy!
Dan Heng materializes his spear.
The guy apologizes even harder, tells them he won't do anything shady ever again, promise, promise! Boothill's jabbers at him and shakes him around some more before Dan Heng taps the pole of his spear against the covered metal of Boothill's leg and tells him come on, he's already scared the man witless, they have a date to keep. Boothill drops the guy and watches him scurry off like a cockroach.
"So, now it's a date, huh?"
"...Come on, let's go."
They go to the Dreamflux Reef after that, because Boothill just so happened to totally by coincidence find that shady guy's wallet (read: robbed him blind) and he wants that money to go back to the native Penaconians before anyone else. Dan Heng follows, and stuffs all of the man's credits into the tip jar of the bar they go to.
And even when the Express embarks anew from Asdana (with Boothill hidden away in some corner or compartment, because the IPC finally got pissed enough to start looking for him under The Family's noses skzikske) this continues. The next planet is difficult to get to because of Stellaron activity; so they have to fly manually part of the way instead of warping. Boothill doesn't get his own room since he's only hitching a ride, but Pom-Pom graciously allows him to sleep on a couch-
("Thank ya, Fluffy. No hard feelings about before, right?" "You're lucky my other passengers like you. And no shoes on the couches!!")
-in one of the cars. And it becomes normal commonplace to find Boothill telling stories, and Dan Heng rapidly writing them all down, at obscene hours in the parlor car while Himeko and Welt ask if either of them even slept.
Boothill teaches Dan Heng all about his favorite drinks and liquor in general, how to aim and shoot a gun, how to hunt and track prey. Dan Heng teaches Boothill about a lot of the teachings of Lan and The Hunt from the Xianzhou, what it's like there, some of the culture, some of the fables and old tales.
Boothill still leaves when it's time to go. He's still got things to do and people to kill, after all.
But it never feels like he's very far. The archives are full of him, even if he's never mentioned by name. The article on the Galaxy Rangers is several times longer than it was before. There's new data on multiple planets and worlds.
There's one that's still just a header and title. Boothill doesn't know about it yet. Dan Heng hopes he can fill the page on Aeragan-Epharshel someday and show it to him.
And even if he doesn't stay, he does return. Boothill breaks in stops by any time he happens to be nearby. He's used to traveling without much rest, and only takes what he can easily carry on him- nothing that can slow him down or hinder him. He can't put a bullet between Oswaldo Schneider's eyes if he gets himself killed over something as stupid as being weighed down in a fight, after all.
Dan Heng is similarly sparse. He still sleeps in the archives, with nothing but his futon and old suitcase to mark the space as his.
But there's an old wooden guitar carefully propped in the corner, just waiting for its owner's return.

Have you ever been so possessed by a half-baked thought that you drew two pics just to get it out of your brain? Yeah, me neither.
These are kinda old, about a year apart. I forgot where I was going with the first pic, making a deal you can't refuse, probably... but I REALLY wanted to take some liberties with his costume on the second one. I mean, even still, I conveniently forgot his chunky white cuffs in the first one.

Fuck we are under attack (Janeys armor reference image)
The Imperial Wardi military has no standardized weapons or armor (except for a few small, elite and specialized groups of soldiers). The vast majority of soldiers have to supply their own, and one's armor is only as good as they can afford. Janeys can afford very, very good armor, though this set opts more for comfort, visual appeal, and basic coverage of vital organs than truly comprehensive protection.
This set consists of a lacquered and finely scaled iron lamellar covering the torso, shoulders, and wrists, and two layers of thick padded skirts protecting the upper legs and groin, all worn over a standard skirt and a light undershirt. The veil draping from the helmet is externally decorated with fabric and conceals an internal set of chainmail (the rest of the mail that would complete the set has been neglected). While this armor is not as fully protective as would be ideal, it is designed to allow for an adequate degree of protection while maintaining freedom of movement to engage with versatile duties (riding, fighting with a sword or spear, archery, shooting a musket, verbally abusing your soldiers to cope with stress, etc).
This armor is substantially more decorated than is typical, while not outright being fully ornamental/ceremonial. The padded components and belt are trimmed with consecrated white lionsmane (a material typically reserved for Odonii and their kin, used to increase prowess in battle), and the helmet has a purely unnecessary skimmer gull plume flopping around on it (for good luck).
There is a great variety of armor produced in Imperial Wardin, but it tends to fall into the categories of lamellar (usually iron or leather) and chainmail, and/or thickly padded linen armors. The latter is of increasing importance in the contemporary, as it is the only armor that offers SOME degree of protection against musketfire. Padded armor certainly cannot withstand a direct hit, but it can sometimes absorb distant or glancing hits from ammunition.

[ID: Alfred Pennyworth walking down the stairs into the Batcave—where Bruce Wayne sits in the dark and in his costume with the cowl pulled down. Alfred announces, “Coffee, eggs benedict and The Daily Planet, Master Bruce. I took the liberty of presuming you would be taking breakfast in the cave this morning.” Alfred sets the tray down on a nearby table as Bruce silently holds a gun up without looking at him, his finger still on the trigger. Alfred gasps, “Master Bruce? That gun, is it...?” He trails off but Bruce speaks up. “The one he used. That night. On them. I took it from the G.C.P.D. evidence depository last year... there was nothing more they could learn from it.” Bruce unloads it, letting a bullet clank to the desk before he picks it up and stares somberly at it. Alfred stiffens up as he asks, “I see. And what precisely did you hope to achieve by stealing your parents' murder weapon, if may be so bold as to inquire...? Beyond an increased capacity for morbid introspection, that is.”
Bruce elaborates, “He fired two rounds. 117-grain hollowpoints... twenty-five cents apiece from any gun store. Is that all their lives were worth, Alfred? Fifty cents of ammunition...? He left four rounds in the clip, one in the breech, dropped it and ran—afraid to finish what he started. And I just stood there. Helpless.” Alfred tells him, “The good your parents did lives on, Master Bruce. And I, for one, am glad he left those final rounds in the gun. I happen to believe the world is better served for having you in it.” Bruce still doesn't look at Alfred or acknowledge the kind statement. He'll go on to explain that a young mother was murdered while he was on patrol and that he blames himself for not preventing it. END ID]

you wrote a real banger of a line for riz! Additionally, I love how his line about how Pok died because he was alone is followed by adaine and gorgug behind him. Pok was isolated but Riz isn’t. Friendship beam.
exactly u get it!! thank u a lot of bard!riz's arc is about the fear of death and loss and the search for a way to keep it from happening to him again. he will never find a conclusive solution because not everything is caused by a villain to defeat or a deity to appease but with kalina specifically I do always find it so perfect and symmetrical that she orchestrated pok's death and then can't keep riz down. in canon there's a comparison drawn between riz and his dad - they're of the same make, riz looks up to his dad immensely - they're similar enough that you notice their biggest difference is at his back riz has his party while pok had, well, kalina.
I keep rotating this in my mind about sophomore year bard!riz actually, that ever since he learned that his dad was pursuing justice and that the universe is not merely chaotically cruel and to be appeased he's come to the realization that 1/he loves his dad and thinks he's a hero and 2/he has, under the power of his fears, distanced himself from the version of himself that could be like pok at all. he thinks himself a coward, and he doesn't like being a coward, and now being a coward isn't really an option anymore, but there's no proof it didn't keep him safe until high school! and kalina would be actively pushing him towards returning to that perceived safety. I think "friends keep you from dying" is half of it, with the other half being the evolution of the freshman year realization (cruelty thrives in compliance and inaction) that is "cruelty will actively encourage compliance and inaction because it needs those things to spread". the realization that kalina's heart-to-heart is insincere is important in getting riz to where he's like wait a minute I don't have to listen to you just because you agree with my perception of myself lol. for the moment it doesn't matter that he's a coward or a hero, it matters that kalina is trying to manipulate him and his friends to let her resurrect her destructive god. and also that if he dies his friends will tear the realm open to bring him back

after getting the shit beat out of him on multiple occasions, confronted by the mafia, also on multiple occasions, multiple instances of attempted murder, I think that Phoenix deserves to be forced to be a little kickass. Like he worked at a shady restaurant and wins poker games against people who are drunk and probably more than willing to kick the shit out of him all the time, there's no way that he wouldn't be able to defend himself in some way. Maybe Trucy taught him how to throw knives or something and I know he's a funny indestructible punching bag of a guy but come on... I think at least for his daughter's sake he should at least know how to handle a gay little knife or something.

Michael Craze pops up as Vince Kelly, a teenage runaway from a borstal centre, in Gideon's Way: Boy With Gun (1.23, ITC, 1966)
#fave spotting#michael craze#ben jackson#doctor who#gideon's way#1966#boy with gun#itc#a relatively rare fave spotting! outside of his DW work‚ Mike didn't make a huge amount of appearances in cult tv‚ at least not many that#survive or are easily seen; he'd previously starred in Target Luna‚ a completely lost serial‚ but didn't return when the show carried on as#Pathfinders in Space (oddly‚ perhaps because of a change of director‚ every single returning character was recast) and beyond#there were also episodes of Dixon pf Dock Green and Armchair Theatre but these are also in all likelihood lost tv; others‚ like an ep of#Hammer's sci fi anthology Journey to the Unknown‚ are frustratingly unavailable to the average viewer (I was really hoping Network would#do something with JttU after they announced an agreement with Hammer but alas it wasn't to be)#mike would have been about 22 when filming this ep (around May '65) but was still largely playing juvenile parts as here#(his age isn't given but as a borstal runaway he's clearly intended to be a teen); this aired in feb or march '66 in most regions‚ by which#time he had presumably been cast in DW (or very near to it; he'd debut in The War Machines in June of that year)#DW would act as a sort of transition for Craze from youth parts into adult roles (i mean Ben's own age is debatable but I'd say he's surely#meant to be at least 18?). there'd be some more guest spots and a few horror films to come (he was a regular collaborator with Norman#J. Warren) but he doesn't pop up with the regularity of many other Who companions so this was a lovely little surprise (zero memory of him#being in it from when i first watched years ago)

"The sell your cloak and buy a sword" has to be one of the most misquoted Bible verse EVER
It's now become a pet peeve of mine Witnessing all these idiots with surface level theology take this passage at face value and mUh tHe BibLe wAnTs yOu tO bUy gUnS!! and seemingly don't have enough braincells left to rub to realize that the Sword is a metaphor for the Word/Christ crossing several books in the Bible AND that Jesus rebuked Peter for using the very same weapon he was allegedly okay with him using, and went as far as to heal the very man he harmed doing so, but hey I guess expecting those Christians to have a crumb of critical thinking skills might be a little bit too much to ask

As troublesome as Gotham can be, Pauli's is one of those places that rarely gets hit. It's open 24/7 and offers good food to all regardless of who they are and Pauli isn't afraid to hire former criminals like Jerry who used to be muscle for Scarface. Petty thugs who threaten the place for cash are just as likely to receive backlash from their fellow crooks as they would from law-abiding citizens because where else are you going to get a decent meal at 4am?

#audio#putting my head through a wall saturday#this song makes me think about a few things but rn I'm thinking about LR on top of n beating the shit out of FP (their illegitimate father)#maybe he'd even be interested to know that his child has his explosive violent anger despite them never having met#maybe he'd be proud#it would at least make him smile#LR would be so fucking angry. they're 22 n he's 58 so it's a possibility they could win if he couldn't reach his gun#which he usually carries in a holster the front of his pants so if they're sat on top of him he can't reach it#idk if it would be a blind rage of punching him till he stops moving or a screaming crying spitting clawing thing#probably depends on His reaction#if he says anything. like in the middle of the violence he goes ''you really are my kid'' LR would likely start crying#and get sloppy so if FP really cared to live through that situation he could probably throw them off#but frankly I think he'd find it pretty fitting his adult child he never knew existed would be the one to catch up to him#and he's lived a satisfying life by his standards#this would all be solved if he gave a shit n gave them a hug though lmfao#but he doesn't care#beyond the brief entertainment they could bring him. esp since he could hold power over them#eugh what a guy#love my characters they're personifications of my issues lmfao#and the fact that they have identical eye colors and very similar eye shapes. sheesh.#like looking into your own eyes
