Kieran and Emmet know each other. They're sort of friends? It's complicated.

Sonia has admired Professor Juniper's work for a long time. When Juniper reached out to Sonia to ask about her own research, Sonia almost passed out.

For their honeymoon, Lenora and her husband went to Lumiose City. After effectively taking over for a tour guide at the Lumiose Museum, they tried to hire her on the spot.

Grusha and Brycen are pen-pals.

During that party where Nemona met Lacey and challenged Clay, he actually did battle her. After she beat him, he mailed her his gym badge.

A lot of Clay's family still lives in Sinnoh, so he visits frequently. He loves the Sinnoh Underground and knows Roark and Bryon well.

Gladion and Professor Juniper got in contact to discuss the similarities between type: null and genesect. She dragged N into it and the two of them were pretty vital to helping Gladion figure out what to do with Aether Paradise after the mess Lusamine left it in. Gladion really looks up to them both.

The Aether Foundation funds a lot of research into studying artificially created pokemon like genesect. Since genesect are too aggressive for most trainers to handle and too dangerous to be left on their own, quite a few of them have been rehabilitated at Aether Paradise.

N has befriended quite a few ultra beasts who can't return home through Gladion and Aether Paradise.

Brycen met Diantha before she became champion through their acting careers. She once fifted him an amaura egg.

Piers is a fan of Roxie's music.

Colress went to Area Zero and met the AI professor before the time machine was shut down. He pocketed a few paradox pokemon for his troubles.

Lenora treated Cynthia to a battle and a private tour of her museum when she visited Unova in BW1 and the two had a giant nerd fest together. Steven made Cynthia promise to bring him to meet Lenora next time she visited- and she did, during the Pokemon World Tournament.

Bianca once tried to study the Abyssal Ruins, but after realizing something was down there with her she decided some things are better left alone. The stranger with a togekiss who was a little too interested in the plates Bianca had found also didn't help.

Juliana, Florian, and Kieran went to Nimbassa City on a BBA League Club fieldtrip to the Gear Station Battle Subway. After they had to leave early due to Crispin's motion sickness, they spent the rest of the day dressing up their pokemon in the Musical Theater. This was all three's first time in Unova.

Virizion felt sorry for Iron Leaves for being ripped away from their world by a human's folly, and more or less adopted them into the Swords of Justice. Keldeo was excited to have an underclassman. They parted on incredibly good terms after encountering Iron Boulder and Iron Crown, where Iron Leaves decided to go with them.

Professor Rowan wants to strangle Professor Oark with a coat hanger, a sentiment he is completely oblivious to.

Fantina's father is from Kalos but she has never actually been there herself.

Barry and Nate are exes.

After Cogita was released from her curse and eventually died, Enamorus went to Galar with Professor Laventon where she cycles through human disguises. She's currently living as Opal.

Gladion wears a Piers t-shirt under his hoodie.

Nemona owns a poster of Red and Blue used to promote the Alola Battle Tree.

Penny religously read Lillie's "my mom sold me to Champion Cynthia" fics.

Drayton skips class to read Riahan x reader rpf.

Hau was a huge fan of Champion Rei (transmasc Dawn) before he dissappeared, and still is even after the fact.

Drayton caught his duraladon while travelling to Galar for a Pokemon World Tournament held in the region.

Penny and Marnie are t4t e-girlfriends.

Florian was injured by Eternatus during the SwSh endgame.

Ethan was attacked by Mewtwo as a kid. Red and Leaf were there.

Professor Rowan once took Lucas on a research trip to Hoenn where they studied with Professor Birch.

Gloria and Hop's families went on a vacation to Alola together.

After SwSh, Gloria begins attending Uva/Narajna Academy.

Tulip and Elesa have worked together before.

Kieran is a gigantic Iris fanboy.

Bede and Penny had a giant feud and dramatic friend breakup over Tumblr. No mutual was safe from the fallout.

The battle facility leaders have a pretty tight-knit community.

AUs I like and my one favorite thing about them:

@tealmaskmybeloved’s Toxic consequences au.

Synopsis: An au Kieran made a deal with Dokutaro (aka pecharunt) and instead of going down the canon, he helps the Lousy three along with the peach to gain the real mask. And it’s up to Ogerpon, Carmine and the BB elite 4 to stop the plans of the Never-rotting peach.

Favorite thing: Kinda the authenticity of this for me. And it being the first AUs that got my Pokémon hyperfixation rising back from the dead really helped me out.

Synopsis: An au where Kieran, after making a deal with pecharunt, painfully transforms into a reptomammalian dragon creature as he deals with the struggle of his new form.

Favorite thing: The body horror and themes of what it is to be truly human. I honestly enjoy this topic of post-humanism or as I like to call it: “the altered self horror”. Things like all tomorrows, An American werewolf in London, or any other kind of fiction involving body horror in any way I really enjoy!

Synopsis: The “what if” scenario where everything wife’s down a rollercoaster down. Nemona never got a perfect rival, team star is expelled and Arven’s Mabosstiff dies of its injuries. Pechakeen, a glimmora and the half of the now human Geeta, controls the three and forces them under their will.

Favorite thing: the tone and somberness of it all. And yes, this is coming from someone who prefers happy endings over downers, but considering how the AU and the tone, this doesn’t feel like a simple “toxic chained au” that can be stopped with a Pokémon battle. No. This is not that kind of au. Here, there was no Florian/Juliana. There was no helping them out. And in their place, are two siblings forced to take the role of the hero. It kinda has a somber feel of “oh god” for the poor children unable to climb out of the pit of no return… it kinda reminds me of Giant of the skies’ ornithocheirus in a sense.

@ezlo-x’S Lost Family au

Synopsis: A botw/Totk au that deviates heavily from the canon of the era of the wilds. 17 years after a great calamity, Sheik and Ganondorf must save Hyrule from the threat of the Scourge king, with help of allies old and new, to bring balance and slay the ancient malice king.

Favorite thing: The character designs and vibe. Ezlo’s job at redesigning the Gorons, Zora and Rito is something I genuinely enjoy as they are given more realistic traits like the Gorons being more akin to dinosaur people. All her art has a sort of nostalgic vibe like this could be from a cartoon from the late 90’s to early 2000’s like samurai jack or a studio Ghibli movie. The art style really elevates the tone and narrative of this unique BOTW/TOTK au in a way that I honestly prefer over the original (I still love Botw/totk btw)

Honestly, this is probably one of my favorite TLOZ AUs out there.

Synopsis: an au where the main antagonists (along with some other characters) are weredragons, beings with both a dragon and human form.

Favorite thing: The dragon designs. Yes, I know, the one who likes dragons likes the au. But it goes deeper than just that. Each of the designs are all completely unique from one another in one way or another.

From Diminutive “baby” dragons like Hau, Penny or Marnie,

To hulking leviathans like Archie, Ghetsis and Cynthia.

From flightless drakes and lindwyrms like Maxie, Saturn and Cyrus,

To great Soarers like Zinnia and Lysandre who probably put the great Azdarchids of yore to shame.

So yeah! Just a funny lil’ thing about my favorite AUs I like rn.

For bibliophiles there is little more interesting than to browse the libraries of other bibliophiles and discover inspiring books to add to the own collection. In 2023 the Nidus Architekturgalerie in Düsseldorf, Germany together with curator Oliver Jahn dedicated an entire exhibition to the book and their readers: in „Das Haus im Buch“ 100 individuals, i.e. architects, journalists, photographers, displayed their favorite architecture-related books from their own collection, complete with dog ears, annotations and bookmarks. Alongside each book the exhibition presented brief texts by the contributors, among them Andreas Murkudis, Florian Illies, John Pawson, Roger Boltshauser and Vincent Van Duysen. 

For all those who haven’t visited the exhibition the present volume offers the opportunity to make up for it: edited by Ana Vollenbroich, Annelen Schmidt-Vollenbroich, Oliver Jahn and published recently by Park Books: it follows the exhibition’s structure and on double pages shows the books and accompanying texts. And in view of the 100 individual entries there is a lot to discover: Gisbert Pöppler e.g. recounts that the reading of architectural historian Julius Posener‘s autobiography prompted him to pay the latter a visit that became a most treasured encounter he will never forget. And Jórunn Ragnarsdóttir on the other hand quotes Aldo Rossi‘s „Architecture of the City“ as the most important source of her architectural thinking. 

These two examples are representative of the variety of books and people included in the book and even for bibliophiles and well-read architecture buffs there will be surprises and suggestions for books to (re)read after finishing the present one. 

In a nutshell: „Das Haus im Buch“ is a gem and wonderful ode to the physical book as a cultural treasure!

Different anon but I wanna give my thoughts on the starter + protagonists pairing.

Yes on Serena and Delphox, and I associate Shauna with Chespin personally, and I guess that leaves Calum with Greninja which, sure I guess?

Elio and Selene are the sun, moon, ultra sun, and ultra moon protagonists. The ultra games are implied to be a different universe to the regular sun and moon, but the same characters. Hau has a Decidueye in the anime. Elio with Incineroar, because his name is based on Helios aka sun deity. Same with Selene and Primarina because the moon effects water. Makes sense for me at least?

Gloria with Cinderace yes. Victor I see more shy and withdrawn so he gravitates towards Sobble and Rillaboom being an encouraging partner pokemon to Hop is nice. Marnie with Morpeko and Bede with Hatenna is quite obvious.

Florian and Juliana are the scarlet and violet protagonists alongside Nemona, Penny, and Arven. Penny had an Eevee and Arven had a Maschiff. Nemona I can see with any of the 3 here, but the remaining 2? No clue. The problem for me is the school uniform limiting how the characters can express themselves. So they feel like the most blank slate and difficult to characterize. I haven't seen any other media with them yet so yeah I struggle with them.

Yeah see the Serena/Calem/Shauna thing kinda mostly depends on Shauna to me because she just. Gives Chespin energy. But it does match color-wise with Serena wearing red and pink so Delphox while Calem is blue and black which is Greninja.

I haven't played through all of SM/USUM so I can't say but yeah I can absolutely roll with the Sun/Moon Elemental theme!

I also didn't play through SWSH but I saw far too many memes of Gloria swearing and Victor looks like he'd get bullied and cry so yeah Gloria with the fire type while Victor leans toward Sobble which also looks like it'll get bullied and cry.

The ScarVio protags yeah do look pretty blank slate I think this is one where I'd be more inclined to roll with kinda the 'protag as a self insert' thing. And yeah some of that is because Nemona is less defined by the starter and more in her other Pokemon

Tier list of the rivals favorite of the two (or 3 in case Silver) protag options?

i think formatting that would be a little messy so I'll just tell you!

Blue's is Red, both because of gay reasons and pre-teen boy misogyny reasons towards Leaf.

Silver is Kris's rival, but he's closest with Gold. Basically, while Kris was becoming champion, Gold was hunting down the myths of Johto, and Silver sometimes tagged along with him. Silver thinks Lyra is annoying.

Brendan is my go-to protag for gen3 so by default Wally and May are closest with him. Wally and May do know each other but it's mostly through Brendan.

Dawn is my go-to protag for gen4 so by default Barry and Lucas are closest with him. All three of them are really close friends, and Barry and Lucas get especially tight once Dawn dissappears. Dawn is also Rei and he and Akari are besties.

Hilda and Hilbert are twins and pretty inseperable, so Cheren and Bianca aren't particularly closer with one or the other. Bianca and Hilbert were slightly closer, the same for Hilda and Cheren. Hilda and Hilbert are N's first human friends and N would never choose between them.

Nate is Hugh's childhood friend and there's some animosity between Hugh and Rosa for Rosa being ex-Plasma.

Serena is the protag of gen6, so by default Calem is closer with her. Shauna is better friends with Serena than Calem while the other two boys prefer Calem.

Hau has history with Elio as they knew each other before Elio slipped through an ultra wormholes and joined the Ultra Recon Squad. On accounts of the patented faller amnesia their relationship is a little but complicated, as is Hau's relationship with Moon due to their rivalry. He loves them both, though.

Moon is the protag of gen7, and due to helping them sort out the mess with Lusamine, Lillie and Gladion are closer to her.

Elaine is the protagonist of Let's Go and Trace's best friend. At one point they were at the same foster home together. Neither of them know Chase very well.

Gloria was Hop's favorite until she super died. He became really good friends with Victor afterwards. The new Gloria scares the shit out of Bede but both Victor and Marnie are friends with it. It helps that neither of them have the baggage of having known the original Gloria. Victor and Marnie are also tight, she doesn't prefer one over the other. Bede and Victor come from the same orphanage. Victor keeps trying to get them all to quit the gym challenge and join his band.

Juliana is the protag of main game so Nemona, Arven, and Penny prefer her while Florian is the protag of the DLCs so Carmine and Kieran prefer him. Carmine is also friends with Juliana, though.

Everyone is like "omg I love gay rivals to lovers" except for the Pokemon fandom, for whatever fucking reason (ignoring originalshipping and preciousmetalshipping). Like literally no one likes any of the gay rivals to lovers ships outside of those. If they DO, it's het. Like, you NEVER see cutebonesshipping. You never see cheeryfairyshipping. You never see clingyshipping. I don't even know what Arven x Florian is, because no one ships it, they usually all self-ship with Arven or ship Juliana with Arven (and it's very obvious Juliana is their self-insert). Like, I don't understand why?? I guess I could understand clingyshipping, because clingyshipping is very friends/rivals to lovers (they are both at the same time). But with the other two it's like?? They both have the asshole with the not asshole formula that originalshipping and preciousmetalshipping have. I guess maybe, okay, it's not protagonist x your rival, but they're clearly rivals to each other (because neither Hau nor Hop are asshole rivals to the protagonist).

And if you only do like protagonist x rival, like, I do not even SEE Bede x Victor or Gladion x Elio. I DO see Bede x Gloria and Gladion x Selene far more often, though! Like, there's nothing wrong with it, I guess? It's just. I wish shipping for the rivals in the Pokemon fandom was more popular, gay-wise. The only times it is popular outside of gen 1-2 are het-wise, and even then, it's usually glaringly obvious that they're not writing the female protag/rival, and are instead just writing themselves into the relationship.

And like, nothing wrong with that, but for the LOVE of God, just make a new character/OC. There is a difference between the official protagonist of the game and YOU. Just ship yourself as the protagonist with whatever character rather than saying "yeah this is the canon protag (is clearly a self-insert)" because it isn't fair to fans looking for content of the actual protagonist character x other character. Like I'm not saying don't have headcanons but I'm saying you cannot go (this is an example) "This is my Juliana! She is just me but inside the game" Juliana is NOT you just make your own self-insert for the game, like you play as your name in the game and customize the character. Rather than pretending that customization is Juliana just call it yourself.

Get into self-ship! For the love of god! Self-ship is fun and cool! But the official canon protagonist =/= the player character! This is an issue I see in so many fandoms! It's okay to have headcanons, of course!!! But there is a difference between headcanons and just having the character be YOU but in the game!

TLDR; Gay rival ships outside of Gen 1-2 are not popular in the Pokemon fandom which really bothers me because it seems like they should be. Even when it's the protagonist x their rival, it still isn't popular, but oftentimes you see that the het version of this ship is more popular. Ignoring personal preference, this is often frustrating because it's clear that the female character is just being used as a self-insert, in which case the person needs to understand that protagonist=/=player character and just make a self-insert and get into self-ship because it clogs the tags (whether on Tumblr, Ao3, or other media site) since you're not actually portraying the protagonist, you are portraying you.

Why the hell do I care about this it doesn't even matter and this is INCREDIBLY stupid I am getting off my soapbox now
