The Masked Singer: S9 E2 Commentary (ABBA Week)
Gotta admit, I’m looking forward to the songs tonight, because I like me some ABBA! Anyway, same format as last week: three masked celebrities sing, two are eliminated and one continues on to next week as King or Queen of Masked Singer.
As always, I post this before watching any unmaskings, so don’t take my guesses as spoilers! I am watching on a bit of a delay this week (thanks to the DVR), so this may not get posted until after the episode has aired.
Medusa 🐍: Chess pieces (a Knight and a Bishop), palm trees, and Chris Martin are the clues. I’m leaning toward Fergie, and the voice definitely sounds like her. Some are also suggesting that this could be Bishop Briggs, but for now I’m sticking with Fergie. The palm trees could be associated with Florida, and Fergie is part owner of the Miami Dolphins (along with a few other celebrities). Let’s see what the bonus clue is: First class ticket to Tokyo, flight number 1996. I think “First Class” also refers to Fergie’s song “Glamorous” (“First class, up in the sky…”).
Night Owl 🦉🌚: Broke into the business at 17 years old. Referenced “disco balls” 🪩, which would have been popular in the 1970s, so I’m thinking a ‘70s star. Some of their tracks may have been sampled in hits beloved by Millennials, such as songs by “Britney, Christina, and Nicole”. Seen dancing with a snake. Doing what looked like The Hustle and drinking Long Island Iced Tea. An hourglass ⏳…possibly appeared on Days of Our Lives? Or a song about time? It sounds like Debbie Gibson, but Debbie broke through as a teenager in the 1980s, not the 1970s. But she did release dance music, so the ‘70s clues may have been a distraction. The bonus clue: a pack of blue bubblegum. I’m sticking with Debbie Gibson.
Rock Lobster 🦞 🎸: At a club called “Lobster a Go-Go”, which is a reference to the legendary nightclub “Whiskey a Go-Go”. Has been in the business a long time, doing both films and TV shows. He says people watch him dance “for 15 seconds on the daily”, which suggests he may have a significant following on TikTok. Admits being a “weird, neurotic” kid in school and often pulled pranks, getting expelled from three different schools. I saw some cards being shuffled that had a harlequin print on them, showing a pair of jokers. He still sees himself as neurotic but has made a career out of it. Definitely a comedian, but I can’t put my finger on his voice. It could be Nick Bakay (Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch) or Jim Gaffigan. Bonus clue: A judge’s gavel. I think Jerry Springer (who had a show called Judge Jerry) has already been on here, and the voice didn’t sound like Steve Harvey (even though he has his own comedic judge show). But what about a talent competition judge? Based on the sound of his voice, I think Ken Jeong might be on to something for once. This could very well be Howie Mandel, who is well known for being weird and neurotic (partly due to his lifelong struggles with OCD), and he seems like the kind of guy who could be crazy enough to post videos of himself dancing on TikTok.

Crate Digger’s Corner: Roy Buchanan- A Street Called Straight (Atlantic Records, 1976)
Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
(don’t forget to check out the track from the album that I’ve selected while you’re reading the review)
This week in Crate Digger’s Corner, I’m going to take a look at the 1976 album by blues rock guitarist Roy Buchanan, “A Street Called Straight”. He was possibly recruited by The Rolling Stones (the story is he was offered Mick Taylor’s position after he left and turned it down), heavily influenced by Hendrix as well as many other artists/genres, and is an extraordinary improviser on the guitar. If you haven’t heard of Roy Buchanan before, this is as good starting place as any, and I will most likely review some more of his albums in the future. I listened to this on vinyl for this review. I hope you enjoy Roy Buchanan.
A wild guitar leaps into gear, right out of the box on the opening song, ‘Running Out’. Roy uses his axe to drive right into the beginning of the song. A truly, rumbling bass and rock solid drumming drive this relatively quick song through to completion.
‘Keep What You Got’ and ‘Man On The Floor’ follow and are rooted in funk music. The former features a horn section and backup singers (both of which show up on more than a handful of tracks from the album) that, along with the main band, propel this funky nugget to a fiery guitar solo that leads to the end of the song. The latter has all of these guitar bursts that feel like they are flying past you as the funky song opens up for a great guitar solo in the middle of the track.
‘Good God Have Mercy’ follows and is the first hint of his gospel influences on the album. The opening is based around an acoustic guitar figure that gives the song a spacious, rural feel. Electric guitar, harmonica and organ dart in and out as the song slowly builds to a guitar solo that just as slowly drops back into the verse. That is followed by ‘Okay’, another quick funky song. It is highlighted by a nice slide acoustic guitar solo by Buchanan.
‘Caruso’ is another atmospheric, moody piece similar to ‘Good God Have Mercy’, except country or country rock is the musical focus rather than gospel. Buchanan uses an acoustic guitar to provide some fills to alternate with his singing before a droning organ comes in adding just the right touch. This track sounds like a song you would listen to driving down a country road at twilight.
Side two starts out with a tribute piece/homage to Jeff Beck called, ‘My Friend Jeff’. Groovy organs, heavy in the pocket drumming and (of course) great guitar work come together to drive this really fun, funk fusion track.
Then we move into another tribute to a great guitarist with a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘If Six Was Nine’. Roy turns it into a raw, almost sparse, snaking cover. He has a beautiful, tasteful guitar solo that (if it wasn’t before) turns the song into his own. During the second half of the solo he, along with the band, drop into a groovy R&B beat that leads to the end of the song.
That is followed by ‘Guitar Cadenza’, a trippy, mind-bending guitar interlude. He uses all sorts of guitar effects like wah, echo, phasing, etc. to create that experience. That interlude leads to ‘The Messiah Will Come Again’. The opening sounds like an organ prelude with a reverent guitar solo leading to a spoken word intro. After the spoken word part, he lets his guitar speak…
The album ends with the song ‘I Still Think About Ida Mae’. It is a driving country rock song. The song is highlighted by an extended instrumental section with a background chorus adding to the atmosphere of the song.
A great blues rock guitarist indeed But as you can see, in reality So much more
On this album he winds R&B, country, rock, gospel, and blues to make his own statement. Then he takes his guitar and just goes to town!
4/5 stars

Former Canned Heat Guitarist Harvey Mandel Seeking Financial Help after Cancer, in Remission for Nine Years, Returns
After knocking cancer into remission in 2013, former Canned Heat guitarist Harvey Mandel is seeking financial assistance after “the cancer came back with a vengeance.
“Facing several more grueling surgeries, Harvey needs your help to afford the required surgeries and rehab,” reads a statement on his social media pages.
Mandel’s GoFundMe page has so far raised nearly $4,000 of its $35,000 goal.
Known as “The Snake,” Mandel, 77, played with Canned Heat at Woodstock, has been a member of John Mayall and Charlie Musselwhite’s bands and was one of three guitarists to participate in the tryout/studio sessions that resulted in the Rolling Stones’ Black and Blue LP.
He plays lead guitar on “Hot Stuff” and “Memory Motel;” the gig went to Ronnie Wood.
“Unfortunately … I got aced out,” Mandel said of the experience.
