Haru as a painter.

Haru as being a little to the left of your average earthbender-- he doesn't wait and listen, or if he did it doesn't come as naturally as it once did. Hiding from the music of the rocks grinding together deep in the earth for so long, spending every waking moment pretending you cannot hear builds up a deafness after a while. So Haru doesn't wait and listen.

Haru waits and he watches.

He sees so much, maybe too much, because the lines under his mothers eyes are only getting deeper and his eyes can still perfectly trace the places his father used to be in their lives. He watches the town grow steadily emptier, and when his mother begs him to stop listening to the call of the earth, Haru puts all that energy into letting his hands shape what he sees.

And if he has a peculiar habit of dipping the tip of his pinky into mineral-rich pigment before he buys it, nobody in the small village says a word. The way he knows how vibrant and rich the colors will be is far too useful a skill when strange merchants come a-visiting, and nobody can prove it's Earthbending. Not really.

There are certain colors that Haru... can't look at really. The particular dark hazel-brown of his father's eyes for one. Orange and rust-blood-red are the other two. They are colors that he cannot stand, that he goes to any length to avoid using while he paints. Fire-Nation colors. Colors that leave the taste of ash in his throat and make his eyes sting.

Haru didn't know that those colors could ever be anything else-- he'd just assumed that he'd be avoiding the sunset until he died. That is, until he saw a boy draped in an orange that sunsets could only imagine. Funny how orange can go from being a color to fear to a color of hope.
