Lily’s expression softened as she turned to face Harry, sitting cross-legged on the dock. “Likely.” She agreed. “But people are more than their families or the legacies they inherit.” She offered a small smile. It was weak, but it was something. She was trying so hard. “Pretend it's normal for one moment and tell me about the boy you’re sweet on.”

Harry hesitated, his cheeks still flushed. He fidgeted with the scales on his forearm, avoiding his mother's gaze. "He's complicated.” He began, his voice soft. He wanted to keep a straight face, but he couldn’t stop from smiling as he spoke. "Draco can be a right git sometimes, but … he's brilliant.”

“Draco.” She raised an eyebrow, grinning. “Cute name.” Words couldn’t describe how thrilled she was to be having this conversation with her child. Hearing about her baby boy’s crush. It was something she’d always dreamed of. Of course, in her mind, she would give perfect advice. In her mind, she went to the wedding. But she didn’t let her smile falter when she realized she would never have that second part.

His smile widened. “I-I suppose.” He shrugged. “I- well … I, he’s sort of cute, I guess.”

“You only guess?”

“Well … he’s blond.” He muttered. “He … He has these grey-blue eyes, like ice. And his lips are kind of … well. They, they’re like …” He trailed off, turning red. His head dropped to look down at his lap. He felt like a fool in the best way possible. “Has this really soft jaw. From the side, it makes his face look sort of like a crescent moon. And he’s brilliant at potions and charms, flies like he was born on a broom. He has the best laugh, too. It’s … even when he sneers, it's sort of cute. Bit funny, really.” Harry thought a moment, trying to take it all in. “Absolute prick, he is. But … I like him. His friend says he likes me, too. Says we’re idiots. I think he’s right. We’re absolute fools for liking each other from opposite sides of a war.”

Lily's smile softened as she listened to Harry gush about Draco. She could see the light in his eyes, the way his whole demeanor changed when talking about the boy he fancied. Her heart swelled with a bittersweet mix of joy and sadness for all the moments like this that she would never have with him.

“He sounds lovely.”

Harry looked up at her saddened voice, eyes widening at the tears in her eyes. “N-No, I … it’s okay.” He tried to assure, something heavy coming over him as his eyes scanned her face. “I’ll be fine, we’ll be fine.”

“It isn’t that.” She wiped her face. “I’m just happy to have you here.”

“Well, don’t cry; you’ll make me cry.” Unshed tears flooded his eyes as he smiled at her. “One of us has to be able to hold it together.” He joked.

Lily let out a watery laugh, reaching out to cup Harry's cheek. "Oh, lovey. We can both be a mess together." She stroked his cheek gently, her eyes roaming over his face as if trying to memorize every detail. "I'm just … I'm so proud of the young man you're becoming. You still have so much love in your heart."

Harry leaned into her touch, closing his eyes for a moment. “All I’ve ever wanted was to know you’re proud of me.” He admitted, those tears finally falling.

“We’re all so proud of you, Harry. And we love you so much.” She assured, pulling her son close and cradling his head against her shoulder. “Even for the things you aren’t proud of. For the fight. We’re proud of that, too. Just … please, Harry, remember you have a life to live outside of the war and the violence. You’re a person. Not a soldier and not a piece on a chessboard, and one day, there will be no war. One day, you won’t have an enemy to fight. And it’s going to suck.” She watched him look up at her, surprised. “It will, Harry. We saw it in the people we left behind. Once the fighting was done, it was as if their world stopped. They didn’t know what to do with themselves. So please, don’t make this your life. When the time comes, let the violence be in the past. You deserve a life of love and peace, Harry. No matter what you do, never forget that.”

And that’s not to say that Lily would not, she quite literally died for her son.
