Harriet held her head in her palm, her elbow uncomfortably pressed against the desk. Her other hand occupied by the antsy fidgeting of her pencil. Her nerves having already been toyed with the entire day, she was in no mood to hear the agitating, high pitched, gossiping from directly behind her. Both girls going back and forth.

“The way her braid perfectly falls, annoyingly perfect is a wonderful way to describe her.” “She does charity, isn’t that the most obnoxious thing you’ve ever heard?” “To be that sweet you have to have ulterior motives.” “She’s too pretty to be that nice.” “If everyone leaves her she’d have it coming.”

Here these girls were, shittalking Sonya. Her bestfriend, Sonya. Her ride or die, Sonya. Her Sonya. Harriet heard as much as she wanted to hear, but they didn’t cease their blabbering. Acting on temptation Harriet turns to look at the both of them, her facial expression as sharp as a stone statue. “You keep talking about her like that, and I’ll wipe the floor with you like a swiffer.” She spat, her tone no less than venomous. Turning back around she heard one of them whisper again. “Who knew Sonya had a new hound dog. Protecting her weak, good-for-nothing owner.” The girls’ giggles echoed across the room.

‘ “Hound dog”? I’m not a hound dog for defending a friend. It doesn’t make me a hound dog to care for her. ’ Harriet thought, she began reciting the words of the girls in her mind.

‘ “Weak”, “Good-for-nothing”, “Annoyingly perfect”, “Obnoxious”, “Too pretty to be that nice”? you can’t be serious.’

Sonya was the polar opposite of any of those words. The girls gossiping was endless, to have so many awful things to say about such a lovely girl didn’t make sense to Harriet, but how could it?

The bell rang, everyone urgently rushing out the door, Harriet doesn’t wait a second when she sees the two girls who earlier mocked Sonya. “Hey!” Harriet blared, one of the girls turning to look back at Harriet. “Hey what.” The girl taunted agitatedly, her and Harriet walking to meet in the middle of the hall. “A promise is a promise.” Harriet admonished, blowing a swift punch into the girls abdomen. Slightly hunching over, the girl kicked Harriet in the shin and scratched at her face. Harriet tackled the girl to the ground, arm on the girls chest to keep her down. “Now what was it I said I’d do again?” Harriet mocked. “Oh yeah!” Her mock ends as she grabs the girls shoulders. “I said I’d wipe the floor with you like you’re a swiffer.” Harriet tugs her shoulders left and right, swiping her hair and jacket with the nasty grime on the floor. The girl freed her arm and pulled Harriets hair, “Oh, you fight exactly how you talk.” She said as she delivered another blow straight to the girls face. A strained whine leaves the girls lips at the painful feeling of Harriet getting up off her. “I hope you learned a valuable lesson not to talk bad on good people.” Harriet hissed, walking out the side door to the freshly mowed grass. A few people staring at her as she walked out, but Harriet didn’t care.

Harriet unlocked and opened the door of Sonya and Newts apartment, which was practically Sonya, Newt, and Harriets apartment at this point. Stepping inside shes greeted by Sonyas face looking down, focused on whatever she was knitting now. “Hi, Sonnie.” Harriet croaked, even after Harriet being so confident not even 30 minutes before, something about Sonya made her want to be calmer. Sonyas excitement radiates when looking up at her friend, but soon dissipates when she sees Harriets face. “Harri, what happened? Are you okay? Who did this?” Sonya bombarded her with questions. Slowly walking up to her, Harriet gently puts both of her hands on Sonyas shoulders, slowly pulling her into a hug. “I’m okay, if you think my little scratch is bad-” Harriet was cut off. “You’re bleeding, and why? You haven’t told me why.” Sonya was as stressed as can be, her questions turning into orders. “Tell me why.” Harriet pulls slightly away from the hug, looking down shes met with Sonya already staring dead at her, looking unamused. Harriet quickly turned shy, “These girls, they were talking shit, thats all.”, Sonya didn’t seem to buy it. “Harriet.” Sonya bellowed, “You have never thrown a punch for someone talking shit.” Harriets eyelids fell in guilt. “They were talking shit on you.” Sonya looked shocked, her eyes widening at the thought of Harriet fighting for her. “I’m-” Sonya sighed, “I’m just disappointed.” Harriet looked like a guilt ridden puppy “Sonnie.” she muttered, but her mouth left agape. Sonya grabbed the sides of Harriets face, quickly pulling her into a kiss. Harriets eyes were still open, and she didn’t kiss back. Sonya rapidly pulled away from the kiss. “Oh shit- oh my god-” her voice brittle, tears building in their ducts. “I just- I just thought, maybe we shouldn’t go on like this, like friends is all we are- but I guess-” Sonyas anxious stammers were soon cut off by Harriet putting one hand on Sonya’s hip, and the other on the back of her neck, leaving Sonya staring at her, placing her hands on both her arms. “God, even if this ruins us, it’ll feel so good.” Harriet breathed, her lips hovering right above Sonya’s. “I don’t want to have to only fantasize anymore.” and with that, Sonyas lips were on Harriets, and Harriets lips were on Sonyas. Lips melting, it felt like they were watching themselves from third person, spinning. So desperate for each other they stay kissing, and pray that eachother will be a life-line, never needing to take a break to breathe because they are each others oxygen.
