Summary:When Harriet tries to tell her religious mother she's with Sonya, it doesn't end well.

Harriet should have known better than to believe that she would get to be an exception. From youth, her mother had preached that it was a sin, that she was a sin, that the love her heart holds for her Sonya is nothing more than a sin, worthy of being washed away before it dirties her soul.

“I’m a girl, and I like a girl,”She got out, her head held high despite her voice threatening to break.

“Who?!”

The disbelief in her mother's eyes has been replaced with fury, her demeanor turning cold as she tried to recognize the daughter Harriet swore she had always been.

“Sonya.”

There was deafening silence between the two. Harriet’s knees were threatening to give out as he chest ached. The tears she swore she wouldn't cry kept attempting to escape. Despite this, she kept her gaze straight at her mom, at the only living family she had left. Surely, she wouldn't choose to hate her daughter that she had sworn to love until the end of time?

“I’m with Sonya. I have been with her for six months now.”

Her mother stared at the cross behind her, her teeth gritted in anger. This wasn't real. It couldn't be real. It could be anybody else's baby but not hers. Her baby was meant to keep going to her college not too far so she could come home and spend time with her and do the same when she got a job. She would meet a nice man there, and they would go on a few dates before she brought him home. He would be respectful and charming. She would be the one to walk her down the aisle, holding her hand as she wore the necklace she was saving just for that day. They would have children which she would come over and watch.

She couldn't understand it. Her child could not be a sinner. Surely not.

“What about my wedding dress?”She asked, not knowing where to start. When she was young, just barely learning to get into her closet, she had asked her mother if she could wear that pretty, white dress one day. Her mother had promised that she would help her do her hair and makeup the day it was time for her to wear it.

“I can still wear it. I would just wear it at a wedding with her,”She promised.

“No.”

“Mom, I-”

“You don't like girl's. You're confused,”She insisted.

“You’ve known Sonya for years now. You’ve seen how close we are. You’ve had to have known on some level that we weren't just friends.”

“I like girls. I like Sonya. I love her. And one day, I’m gonna get down on one knee, and I’m going to ask her to marry me. And she's going to say yes.”

“I won't allow you to be this way. I won't let you go to hell, Harriet. Sonya either. We’ll call her-”

“Her family knows. They all do.”

Shaking her head, she leaned against the wall as she tried to wake herself up. The family she would see so much, the family that she had allowed her little girl to be around, knew? And they didn't care? They wouldn't try to fix it?

“You're too young to know what you want.”

“But I do. I tried to like boys. I did. I pretended to for years, but that won't make it go away. This part of me is real. I was slow dancing with Minho at prom, but it didn't feel right. Loving a guy doesn't feel right, because it isn't for me. I’m meant to love girls. I was born to love Sonya.”

“You weren't.”

“I tried. I did, but I don't want to anymore. I can't push down and play pretend for the rest of my life to make you happy. Because then I’ll die hating myself. I’ll die unhealed and empty, and I don't want that. If loving girls makes me happy, can't that be enough to make you happy?”She begged.

“But you don't.”

“I do.”

She looked at her child, her lips starting to quiver as her eyes watered. Even so, there was so much rebellion that came from within her soul. There always had been from the second she could crawl.

She knew that if she wanted to ‘heal’ her baby she had to pull drastic measures.

“You aren't leaving this house. You’re going to go upstairs, go to sleep, and we’ll fix you tomorrow. You’ll forget about all of this nonsense. You will never see that girl again.”

“And if I refuse?”

“Then, you’ll never be coming back to this house.”

Harriet stood there, waiting for her to take it back. To say that even if she didn't understand yet, she would learn to. To say that she was worth changing her ways for. To say that she would still let her crawl into her bed like she was a kid with a nightmare again and not a college student that had been drifting away from her for years.

Her mom there, waiting for her to take it back. To say that she did know that she just wanted the best for her and would be normal. To say that she knew that her words weren't true and she would go back to who she actually is. To say that she would lay under a blanket fort all night with her the way she used to after she overheard her parents arguing for too many times.

Neither of them did. Neither of them changed their minds. Harriet's heart still knew who she was, and her mother was still not ready to unlearn all that had been told to her.

“Fine. I'm going to Sonya’s,”She accepted, walking past her.

“You’ll be back! When you realize you're wrong, you’ll be right back at my door!”She yelled, following her to the front door.

“Mom, I’m going to get married one day. I am getting married to Sonya,”She recited, turning around to face her. “Will I be doing that in your wedding dress, or will I buy my own?”

“You’ll be marrying in my wedding dress to a nice, young man.”

“Fine. Don't try and contact me. I won't pick up,”She huffed, walking off of the porch to start her journey to Sonya’s home.

To where as far as she knew, was the only true home she had.
