Mackenzie Davis has played a lesbian twice now. There is no way that Grace "butch as shit, glued to Dani" Harper isn't a card carrying dyke.

as this holiday season comes around I'd just like to remind everyone that Kristen stewarts character in the happiest season should've dumped that girl and gotten with Aubrey plaza

idk about u but if my child said they were bringing a friend over for the holidays . i would be normal around them and treat them like family instead of referring to them as an orphan or remarking about how strange it is that they’re there.

Um I just watched Happiest Season and have some thoughts. I like Kristen Stewart so I thought it would be a fun movie to watch even though I'm not crazy about holiday movies. It was not very fun but at least it had a happy ending I guess
So I hated how at first there was this whole thing about vilifying Harper's fear of coming out, and how it must mean she's ashamed of Abby or that it's somehow Abby's fault or that she's immature and weak for it or whatever. I found it manipulative and selfish, and hated how they kept insisting on it throughout the movie, only to randomly switch and for John to say at some point how everyone's coming out story and experience is different. Oh, speaking of John, I absolutely loathed his "you're heteronormative and sucking up to patriarchy" speech to Abby. Like... she's a lesbian. Idc if it was a joke, people irl even in the LGBT community will call a married lesbian "heteronormative" and a hetero poly man "queer". I digress
I also hated Harper's antics such as not telling Abby that she's not out to her family sooner, inviting her to spend Christmas with her family in the first place (especially with her dad's campaign thing?), allowing people to believe that her girlfriend stole a necklace or just generally never defending or speaking up for Abby. Also it's like they were prisoners, like what was up with the whole Abby having to sneak out of her room to spend time with her girlfriend thing?!? If I brought my roommate to spend Christmas with me I'd probably want to make sure she's having a good time and spend more time with her than a few hours a day like an outdoors animal. Also, I could not for the life of me understand why she was hanging out with Connor so much. And why she immediately thought Abby was "keeping tabs" on her when she just went to check up on her. That whole tantrum was unwarranted. Anyway, her whole attitude is questionable, I thought people were only hating on her because of the not coming out thing, but she is legitimately an awful girlfriend overall
Next thing I hated was how everybody treated Jane. At first I thought she was some kind of evil big sister, but she is just a genuine person with good intentions. What was the point of treating her worse than a pet for the entire movie? Not a single character has something good to say to or about her. It's a very strange choice to have such a character in a movie and offer her absolutely nothing
Another thing that just kinda confused me was Riley's role in the movie. Everyone I see is like oooh Abby and Riley oooh should have ended up together!! Like, I just don't see it. I think she was there with the sole purpose of having people say that. It was nice to have some backstory for Harper (that only made matters worse, but whatever), but that story could have been told by a character with a lot more essence. She was only there to make Harper slightly jealous and to pass the time with Abby. Like the apple of discord kinda thing, Connor with Harper and Abby with Riley, they make each other jealous and it strains their relationship, etc. story as old as time, very tired.
Moreover, the fighting scene was so awful and unnecessary. Like it just did not fit with the rest of the movie, not to mention Jane's painting getting ruined.
The only slightly likable characters, in my opinion, were Harper's mom, and perhaps John, if we ignore his whole diatribe on coming out and heteropatriarchy bullshit. He had his moments of redemption when he came after Abby and befriended Jane.
I did not see this movie as a romantic comedy, all it showed me was a terrible relationship and some questionable views on coming out/lgbt families/christmas traditions. Normally I'd enjoy a cheesy romcom, but this one was not enough rom, not enough com, and overall too messy.

Pride - Harper & Abby - 2024
Harper and Abby have had their issues, but they earned their happy ending!
Harper and Abby – A gay romcom
To say I was excited to see this movie coming out was an understatement.
Then Covid happened and who knew when the movie would be released, but then it was revealed to be headed right to Hulu. And well, I signed up for a Hulu account.
I was one of those people who made their numbers look real good that year.
Overall, this movie is meh at best.
