Pendergrass's popularity became massive at the end of 1978. With sold-out audiences packing his shows, his manager – the renowned Shep Gordon, who was known for his innovative approaches to publicizing his artists – soon noticed that a huge number of his audience consisted of women of all races. Gordon devised a plan for Pendergrass's next tour to play to just female audiences, starting a trend that continues today called "women-only concerts".

Amazing soul record with an unlikely cover. If you’d shown me this cover without any hint to the musical contents I’d have assumed it was metal or prog or something, not smooth as hell socially conscious Philly soul. But that’s what it is. The finest work of Teddy Pendergrass before going solo—John Legend and The Roots covered the title track on their criminally underrated Wake Up! album. #haroldmelvinandthebluenotes #teddypendergrass #phillysoul #vinyl #vinyladay #lp #vinyloftheday #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #vinylcollective #instavinyl #vinylgram #recordcollector #nowspinning https://www.instagram.com/p/CiGV6EeutHS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Repost from @lp.bdays 👑👑👑👑👑 2.8 - Happy 46th Bday to Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes’ 1975 LP (Philadelphia International), “To Be True”! “To Be True” is the Philly vocal quintet’s third studio album and its first of two releases in 1975. Produced by Philly Soul legends Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff at Sigma Sound Studios, “To Be True” is eight songs and 38 minutes long. In those eight songs, the group lands three top 10 r&b singles with “Where Are All My Friends”, “Bad Luck” and “Hope That We Can Be Together Soon” (featuring Sharon Paige). While Teddy Pendergrass is still the unquestionable star of the group, it is worth noting that he did not sing lead on all of the songs. In fact, Harold Melvin himself handles most of the male vocal parts on “Hope That We Can Be Together Soon”. This may be a reflection of the growing tension between Pendergrass and Melvin as the two disagreed over what share of the group’s revenue should go to its star lead singer. Teddy would record one more album with the group before leaving to pursue a solo career at the of 1975. “To Be True” was the group’s first #1 R&B album and its first to crack the top 30 on the pop album charts (#26). It is yet another classic in the Philly soul canon. RIP Teddy Pendergrass 🙏 #haroldmelvinandthebluenotes #tobetrue #phillysoul #phillyinternational https://www.instagram.com/p/CLCZ_NmA1TQ/?igshid=pjvzxpcyoda0

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes / Reaching for the World R. Rock ‘n’ Roll. The First 25 Years: 1972. In America’s singles chart the Philadelphia soul sound, which the #delfonics and #theintruders had kept bubbling for 4 yrs, suddenly boiled over as producers #thombell and #gambleandhuff got into their stride. The former was responsible for hits by #thestylistics and #thespinners , while Gamble and Huff furthered careers of #joesimon #theojays (pictured) the hit Back Stabbers. #haroldmelvinandthebluenotes and #billypaul #rockandsoul #philadelphiasound #70s https://www.instagram.com/p/CAZAZ3rlS7s/?igshid=csv75hwnweht

#Repost @ruxspizzle_ • • • • • • In #1972 #HaroldMelvinAndTheBlueNotes' "#IfYouDontKnowMeByNow" became their first hit, topping the US R&B chart and peaking at number three on the US Pop chart.

The song was originally written for #Labelle (a trio led by #PattiLaBelle) but they never recorded it. Much like the issue with “#IMissYou" and #TheDells passing on it, the song's composers #KennyGamble and #LeonHuff gave the song to #HaroldMelvin & #TheBlueNotes, which featured #TeddyPendergrass as lead vocalist. In addition to the single release, the song was included on their eponymous debut album. #TWIMH
