How to Identify Top Quality Hardwood Floors: A Buyer’s Guide
Choosing hardwood floors is a significant investment that adds value, elegance, and warmth to your home. However, not all hardwood floors are created equal. Understanding what makes hardwood flooring “top quality” can help you make a confident purchase that lasts for years. In this guide, we’ll walk you through key factors to look for when selecting top quality hardwood floors.
Tumblr media
1. Premium Wood Species and Sourcing
The type of wood plays a major role in the quality of your hardwood floors. Durable and sought-after species like white oak, walnut, maple, and hickory are known for their longevity and beauty. Additionally, sourcing from sustainable, well-managed forests ensures ethical practices and superior material quality.
2. Thickness and Construction
Top quality hardwood floors have substantial thickness, which directly affects their lifespan. Solid hardwood planks should be at least ¾ inch thick, while engineered hardwood should have a thick top veneer (at least 3mm) to allow for refinishing.
3. Superior Finishes and Coatings
The finish not only protects your hardwood floors but also enhances their appearance. Top quality hardwood floors are often treated with advanced finishes that resist scratches, stains, and UV damage. Options like UV-cured oil finishes penetrate deep into the wood, providing a natural, matte look while offering strong protection.
4. Grade and Appearance
The grade of hardwood affects its appearance, from the presence of knots to color variations. High-quality floors use select or premium grades for a clean, uniform look, while character grades offer a more rustic, natural aesthetic.
5. Reliable Warranties and Certifications
Top quality hardwood floors come with strong warranties, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in their durability. Additionally, certifications like CARB Phase 2 compliance ensure that the flooring meets safety and environmental standards.
6. Expert Craftsmanship and Installation
Even the best hardwood floors need proper installation to reach their full potential. Top quality flooring is precisely milled for easy installation with tight seams and stable locking mechanisms for floating floors.

I miss the old floor
The thing I miss most about the house, is the floor. The beautiful 1920 Cherry hardwood floor. When my grandparents inherited the house, one of the first things they did was tear up the old green carpet my great-grandma had in that house, and had the original floors polished. Spectacular. But they also ripped out the old claw-foot bathtub and that was a dumb thing to do. At least in my opinion. But the floor, it's rare to find an older house with such a beautiful original floor. Not because they don't exist, but because there are more new houses these days than there are old houses. So of course I grieve for those floors. They're no longer mine.

Water Damage: Warped or stained planks indicate the need for professional attention.
Loss of Shine: If your floors look dull even after cleaning, it’s time to consider refinishing hardwood floor services.
The Refinishing Hardwood Floor Process

Why Engineered Hardwood is a Game Changer for Quality Floors
When it comes to choosing flooring that offers both beauty and durability, engineered hardwood has become a top contender in modern homes and businesses. For years, hardwood floors have been synonymous with elegance and sophistication, but engineered hardwood floor bring an innovative twist that takes this classic option to the next level. Here’s why engineered hardwood is a game changer for quality floors.
Tumblr media
What is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?
Engineered hardwood is a type of flooring made from real wood, but with a twist. Unlike traditional solid hardwood, which is made from a single piece of wood, engineered hardwood consists of multiple layers. The top layer, also known as the veneer, is real hardwood, while the inner layers are crafted from plywood or other materials. This construction makes engineered hardwood both sturdy and flexible, able to withstand various environmental conditions where traditional hardwood might falter.
Durability and Stability
One of the biggest advantages of engineered hardwood over solid wood is its ability to resist warping, shrinking, or expanding due to changes in humidity and temperature. In regions with high moisture levels or homes with fluctuating temperatures, engineered hardwood performs exceptionally well. The layered construction prevents the floor from bowing or cracking, ensuring your floors look great for many years to come.
Aesthetic Appeal
The top veneer layer of engineered hardwood is made from the same high-quality wood as traditional hardwood, offering the same stunning appearance. Whether you choose oak, maple, cherry, or walnut, engineered hardwood offers a rich, natural look that adds warmth and elegance to any space. Its versatility in design allows you to achieve the classic hardwood aesthetic with less maintenance and care required than solid wood.
Cost-Effective
While engineered hardwood offers many of the same aesthetic and functional benefits as traditional hardwood, it typically comes at a lower price point. The manufacturing process of engineered hardwood is more efficient, and since it uses less high-quality wood in its construction, it costs less per square foot. This makes it an attractive option for homeowners and businesses looking for the beauty of hardwood floors without the premium price tag.
Installation Flexibility
Engineered hardwood is easier to install than solid hardwood. It can be installed using several methods, including nail-down, glue-down, or even floating installations. Many engineered hardwood products come with a click-lock system, which makes installation even quicker and easier, with no glue or nails required. This can save both time and money during the installation process.
Environmentally Friendly
Since engineered hardwood uses fewer natural resources and can often be made from sustainably sourced wood, it tends to be a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional solid hardwood. If you’re looking to reduce your ecological footprint while still enjoying the elegance of wood floors, engineered hardwood offers a responsible solution.
Easy Maintenance
Another perk of engineered hardwood is its low maintenance requirements. While solid hardwood floors often need periodic refinishing to maintain their beauty, engineered hardwood requires far less upkeep. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are all that’s needed to keep your engineered hardwood floors looking pristine for years.
Resale Value
Like traditional hardwood floors, engineered hardwood adds significant value to your home or business. Its stylish appearance and long-lasting durability can help increase your property’s appeal, especially to prospective buyers who value quality flooring. Whether you plan to sell soon or simply want to enhance the longevity of your home, engineered hardwood is an investment that pays off.
Conclusion
Engineered hardwood has truly revolutionized the world of flooring. With its combination of durability, aesthetic appeal, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits, it’s clear why engineered hardwood is considered a game changer in flooring options. If you’re looking for a flooring solution that offers both quality and longevity, consider engineered hardwood for your next renovation or construction project.
