This is a Trek blog, but my first, formative TV love was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, specifically the sweetly nerdy Willow Rosenberg. I saw a lot of myself in her, both the positive (smart, loyal, funny, kind, proudly Jewish) and negative (conflict-averse, approval-hungry), and her arc really helped me come to terms with myself in my teenage years. We even had the same SAT score, and both eventually figured out we were kinda gay (or bi, as the case may be). The passage of time is a heck of a thing (the two Vampire Willow shots are from grad school and 2022), and after finally being able to visit “Sunnydale” High last week on a trip to LA, it hit me like a brick to realize that Willow Rosenberg, or at least the lovely woman who plays her, Alyson Hannigan, turns 50 today (March 24, 2024). So, happy birthday to the creator of an indelible character, who let me be a little more me.

Childhood

Rebecca does not know her birth parents. She was put up for adoption soon after her birth, and was adopted before her first birthday.

She was adopted by Alice and Henry Brand. She grew up in a happy home, and over the next 10 years her parents adopted a total of 7 more children, all younger than her. Rebecca loved her childhood, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her siblings.

She was a good student in school, studied, never went out and broke any rules, she was for all intents and purposes the golden child.

She always had a passion for baking, and as she got closer to graduating highschool, she decided that that was what she wanted to do

Young Adulthood

Rebecca ran her baking business primarily out of her own home, as she believed that it gave her baked goods more of that home baked fresh taste that was imperative.

Rebecca never had an interest in dating, and instead preferred to keep to herself, which did earn her some gossip from ladies her grandmother played bingo with, as well as some attempts to hook her up with their sons, but for the most part she was able to dodge those and continue on her way.

When she was in her late 20s one of her younger sisters ran off, all she left was a note saying she was going to Australia. Now Rebecca was a major homebody, the only travel she wanted was her afternoon walks around the local park. But when she saw that her sister had run off she knew she had to try to find her.

Eventually this led her to Australia. She found herself almost drawn to Magnetic Island, and eventually, after Rebecca found her sister and made sure she was alright, she decided it was time to check it out.

She began baking again as a form of income and began to notice that those who ate her baked goods seemed to be eased and comforted by the treat. She doesn't know if it is a special gift, or if it’s just her good old southern cooking.

Now she makes sure anyone new who moves in feels comforted and at home as well.
