Steve woke up agitated again. Again, he had that nightmare about the day you disappeared and how your body vanished between his fingers. If they had left him, he would have finished off Thanos himself with his own hands.

He had searched through many books, through your things, everywhere. He needed a solution, a way he could bring you back.

The emptiness of being without you was enormous, and nothing could fill it. He tried to occupy his mind with different activities, but one way or another, everything always came back to you.

Several times he thought that there must be some way to go back in time, and he didn't even care if he had to start all over again; he was able to do whatever it took to bring you back.

He ran as fast as he could when he saw they were coming back. He didn't want you to be alone; it would probably be too confusing. He didn't have much time to think about how he was going to explain to you what had happened.

He stopped when he was close; he took a breath; he needed to calm down first; you couldn't see him so upset either; although it was obvious that he couldn't hide what had happened, he couldn't wipe the passage of time from his face.

“Y/N," Steve said carefully.

You looked at him confused; you didn't know what had happened.

“What happened? What am I doing here? “you questioned, looking around you. Steve was about to answer you when you interrupted him. “Who are you?"

Now Steve was the one who was confused, but then he remembered that maybe there was a slight possibility that you had suffered a blow to the head just before you disappeared; in fact, you were unconscious when he hugged you before you vanished.

He bit his lip, trying to contain all the feelings that were welling up inside him. He managed to convince you to go with him.

"Y/N has amnesia." Those words kept echoing in Steve's head, but he wasn't going to give up hope, not this time; somehow he was going to make you regain your memory, and if not, then he was going to make you get to know each other again, like in the beginning, until you fell in love with him again.

He wasn't going to lose you again.

To be fair to Steve, he wasn’t deliberately staring at the guy across from him while getting coffee. He just kind of naturally did that.

After the long journey of learning to unmask post surprise-you’ve-got-autism revelation, Steve had discovered most people thought he was pretty weird. It wasn’t just the collection of Muppet merchandise or the inability to stop talking about the socio-politics of Band Aid.

It was the staring. Steve stared a lot, just to filter out all of the stimulation trickling into his brain. It just so happened that sometimes his designated staring spot had people in it.

This time, the person in Steve’s staring spot was hot. Like holy shit hot.

It wasn’t just the hair. Or the eyes. Or the body. Or even the 80s moustache. It was the way he carried himself. Confident, completely at ease with himself and a natural flirtatious energy radiating off him.

The energy changed slightly when the guy caught his eye and simply stared back.

Full eye contact. No maliciousness. No leering, even. Just clear blue eyes looking back into his.

He was wearing a rainbow lanyard and the attached card read “please be patient with me! I am autistic” and there were several pride pins on his denim jacket. He also had an opossum backpack which Steve thought was particularly incredible.

Steve didn’t talk to him. His brain had gone far too offline at that point to even form a sentence. Robin did though.

The guy seemed delighted. His face became animated and warm as he seemed to talk to Robin at a speed previously thought impossible.

And he bought Steve a coffee. A vanilla latte with tiny hearts dancing around a larger, more dominant one.

“His name is Billy” Robin said before she left him to go on her quest of flirting with the barista.

Billy was a nice name. It was perfect, really.

Maybe Steve would start going to that particular coffee shop more often.

For Billy who had blue eyes and a backpack that looked like an opossum and was kind.

Steve was looking at the brochures and analyzing the options; only two convinced him. He wanted to give you a surprise for your birthday, but after doing so much research and looking at about fifty different brochures with a variety of different activities, from a visit to an amusement park to a cruise, you did not convince him at all; he always found something that he was sure you wouldn’t like.

He was so desperate that he was about to throw all the brochures, and the one that fell on the table would be the place where you would go. But suddenly something caught his attention; it was under the sofa, almost completely hidden.

He took it, began to read it, and smiled when he saw that it would be perfect; it was a camping area. He remembered that you told him about some of the times you camped when you were a child.

First, he looked around the house to see if you had anything that would be useful, then little by little, without your noticing, he was buying everything you would need until the day came.

"Do you mind if I pick you up at two o'clock?" Steve asked you when he passed in front of your office.

"Shall we go to lunch?" You asked the question without looking away from the computer screen; you were missing a few details to complete your report on the previous mission.

"No, but I'm sure you'll love where we're going," he answered and quickly walked away.

"Steve, tell me where... STEVEN!"

When you went to find him, you couldn't. You didn't want to spend the entire day wondering what you were going to do, but no matter how hard you looked, you couldn't find your husband.

You complained to him when he arrived; however, he excused himself, saying that he didn't want to ruin the surprise, and although it took him some work, he convinced you to get into the car.

"At least tell me where we are going," you asked as you settled into the seat.

"No, I don't want to ruin anything, as I said before," he answered as he closed the door.

Steve told you about other things on the way, so, avoiding what you wanted to know, you stopped at a restaurant on the side of the road.

"Is this the surprise?" You asked, dismayed and confused; it didn't make sense that he would bring you so far for that.

"No, but I'm already hungry, and I think you are too. We still have a couple of hours to go," he explained.

Finally, you arrived, and you started laughing when he gave you one of the backpacks with what you needed for camping. It had been a long time since the last time you did it, but you thought you still remembered some basic things.

You had to get Steve out of the tent, as he couldn't set it up and was about to break it.

"See, it's not so difficult," you commented when you finished put the tent.

"The instructions aren’t clear," he complained.

You laughed but stopped when you thought you heard thunder. "Steve, did you check the weather?"

"Was I supposed to?"

Before you could answer, a storm rolled in. Steve didn't know where to hide; he had just learned he had forgotten something very important, and now your birthday surprise was ruined.

"We need to get to the car before the roads close; otherwise, it could be dangerous."

However, the roads were already closed, so you looked for a place to take shelter until the rain stopped and the roads reopened.

"I'm sorry, I ruined your birthday, doll." Steve apologized for the tenth time in the car, on the way back, as you tried to wring out your clothes that were still wet—in fact, everything you were wearing.

"Next time, I don't want any surprises; we'd better plan something together," you replied.

You weren't angry, but it definitely hadn't been the best birthday.
