My grandpa is soon 91 years old. He has lived through so many events, but it has not broken down his spirits.
He is the coolest man I have ever known, and my twin. We both love to write, history, titanic and have a wide imagination. "Nothing is impossible, it just takes a little time", he has told me since I was a little kid. We spent hours in his work shop, creating guillotines, titanic lifeboats, bastilles, royal carriages and whatnot. Whenever I wanted to create something, he was there with ideas and material. He writes poems for every birthday, Christmas and graduation (where he also writes songs)
He lived in Haparanda, and on the other side of the river was war, ww2. He saw it close. On his 12th birthday, may 8th, Germany surrounded its military forces to the allies, and there was peace in Europe. He said that it was the best birthday present he ever had.
My grandpa is awesome. He did the Vasa-lopp (a 90km skiing race) multiple times, one time behind our current king. I think that if you Google it, you'll find my grandpa in the background<3 One time, he got up at 4 am to help my mom with a news paper round, while not getting a single penny himself. He has told me so many fun stories about his childhood, that I one day hope to pass onto my children.
Why am I telling you this? Recently, my grandfathers health has been declining, and I want people to know what this amazing man, that I am proud to call my grandpa, exists somewhere in this little country. Even if you don't know who he is, I want you to know about him, because he's a person that is deserved to be known♡

the owls and @whieskey's lions are hanging out again - this time in the finnish Lapland!
all photos are taken by me!
pic 1: in Posio, there's a road going between two lakes with just thin strips of beach (or pebble shore) on either side. it's a beautiful rest stop, as the lakes and their shorelines go on far into the horizon.
pic 2: the border between Tornio and Haparanda. yes, that is also the border of Finland and Sweden, you can just stroll over if you feel like it! many locals go to work over the border, and people around there follow the currency rates and go get their groceries, gas etc. on the side the rate favours.
(also note on Mollie's shirt: a flea market find, with a logo for Myllyn Paras, a local company that produces grain products like flour, pasta, and granola. the name translates to "the best of the mill", like y'know, a windmill :-D)
pic 3: Kukkolankoski, the longest free-running rapid in Finland, located in the border river Tornionjoki. the finnish side is mainly a fishing area, where they upkeep an unique and traditional fishing method from the 1200s.
pic 4: in Rovaniemi you can find The Santa Claus Village (don't listen to the rumors, Santa lives in Lapland!) where you can meet the man himself! the village is also crossed by the Arctic Circle - from that point north, there is no sun in winter and no dark in summer!
pic 5: in The Santa Claus Village you can meet reindeer and give them treats! reindeer herding is the traditional livelihood of the sami people in Lapland (and not just in Finland, but the actual Lapland reaches all around the northest part of Europe) and the reindeer roam free in the area, and it's not unusual to see then hanging out close to roads or walk along it. they're usually chill with cars unlike deer and moose, but do keep your eyes extra open when driving in the reindeer herding area!
also a fun fact: I wanted to keep the focus on the lions, but I had to sneak Kopek in one pic; his motif bird is thw regional bird of the area (Peräpohjola) where all the places in the photos are located in!
#thanks for letting me use the lions for stuff!!#maybe. maybe next time there will finally be the interactions.. haha ha.. ha......#depending on the time I end up posting this I'm either going to visit the area or have just visited it again#also again sorry for just throwing colors on them hopefully nothing's too much far off!!#own art#original character#inazuma fan team#kopek

Does VR offer cross-border trains to Sweden?
Only for freight today. There was a cross-border passenger service to Haparanda (Haaparanta in Finnish) from Finland, but our services there ended in 1988, and our Swedish colleagues SJ stopped theirs in 1992, when passenger service to Haparanda ceased entirely. (The rail line between Tornio on the Finnish side and Haparanda on the Swedish side is our only western rail link).
However, Swedish train service to Haparanda was restored in 2021, and with an upgrade of the rail link between Tornio and Haparanda (including electrification) under construction, we could restore a passenger link to Haparanda in 2025 at earliest. However, please note this is not yet confirmed.
Interestingly, right now Finland is a rarity amongst European countries in that we have no passenger links to other countries. There used to be a high-speed train link from Helsinki to St. Petersburg, and an overnight train to Moscow... but those were discontinued after Russia's new invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

I like this!😍
Matchen spelades inte på Piteås hemmaplan LF arena, utan på Boden energi arena.
Piteå vill bli hela Norrbottens lag genom att skapa ett bredare kontaktnät och nå nya sponsorer.
They want to play games spread out over Norrbotten (the north of Norrland, everything from Piteå and up so including Luleå, Boden, Haparanda, Jokkmokk, Gällivare, Kiruna) to reach a larger crowd. 2789 people was a season high attendance. Last year they did a midnight sun game in Kiruna. The thing with Norrbotten is that it’s sparely populated with large distances. Piteå and Luleå are close together, but Piteå to Kiruna is nearly 400 km. As a rule of thumb you drive through 100 km of forrest to get to the next city, especially inland.
But Norrbotten is a very important region in Sweden, although a lot of people don’t realise it or don’t care. You have LKAB, the iron ore mining company located in Kiruna which is state owned and makes a huge profit every year. It’s important enough that they are now moving the entire city of Kiruna to be able to extract more ore. With that comes SSAB centered in Luleå, they make steel using the iron ore from LKAB. You have the large rivers containing all of Sweden’s major hydropower plants (both north and South Norrland), providing up to half of Sweden’s electricity and all of the regulatory power. You have the forrest industry.
It’s also beautiful if you know where to go, with rivers, and mountains in the far north and north west, attracting both domestic and international tourism to hike, see midnight sun and northern lights in the winter.
Because of the energy situation in Sweden, with the north having all of the major hydropower plants and the south being a lot more populated (Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö and Uppsala are all in the south of Sweden, the half way point is around Sundsvall) and not being able to produce sufficient electricity locally, all new major industries locate to the north, that’s the only way to have sufficient power. Right now there’s a lot of things going on, such as starting production of fossil free steel and factories for electric car batteries, leading to an influx of people as well.
So there is definitely good reason for Piteå to try and play their games a bit more spread out. Of course there is the aspect of rivalry, but neither Luleå, Kiruna or Skellefteå have a team in Damallsvenskan. In fact there is no team except for Piteå north of Uppsala. So hopefully their neighbouring cities would also be willing to support Piteå, for the region to be able to have a top tier league at all.
thats great

reminds me that just recently I saw this tweet on sw*dish twitter (troll factory and right wing hell… I do my best to stay out) of this swedish woman from haparanda who feels frozen out by her colleagues, because the workplace is “officially swedish speaking” but the other employees keep speaking in finnish and she doesn’t know it. instead of explaining that she doesn’t understand or maybe learning the basics of a language that most people there speak as the town is, like, split by the border, she films them and posts it on twitter explaining how left out she is and wants people to feel bad for her 🙄 like “how dare people speak a minority language!1! what about the beautiful imperial language of swedish 🙏 we should be speaking it on paper 🫡“
someone replies “swedish people actually talk to your colleagues instead of being passive aggressive and sneakily racist on twitter challenge failed again. imagine living 5 mins from finland and not even bothering to learn the basics” to which some fucking GENIUS replies “I live five minutes from denmark and I get pissed when I hear people speaking danish” like…that’s a normal valid opinion to have… and loudly broadcast. these aren’t even the same thing bc sweden colonized finland for centuries, tried to force finns to speak swedish, banned people in sweden from speaking finnish and other uralic minority languages well until the 1960s,… how is the swedish empire mindset still so alive it’s crazy!! do people not care at all!
saying that sort of thing about danish is so unnecessary too, while it’s not straight up racist since swedish “biological racism” doesn’t classify danish people as lesser humans than swedes, and sweden hasn’t really occupied (1658) and had to swede-ify any danish territories since the 1700s/1800s it’s just… why do swedish people have this ingrained urge to be insane about and wish for the non existence all languages other than swedish, and any dialect that’s “too weird” …
#rant#super unstructured#but the person talking about denmark was clearly doing that for laughs thinking they were so funny and quirky#you’re not!!! you’re a fucking weirdo too even though it doesn’t make you straight up racist it’s still xenophobic#and fucking weird#actually I’d say my generation is the first truly Swede-ified generation in scania#the connection to denmark is severed apart from people going to cph at least once a year#bc before us almost everyone understood danish#many people here nowadays don’t and it’s on purpose ofc#bc it’s ‘ugly’ and ‘weird’

'snus import trip to sweden with bae🥺'
The romance!! 🥺🤭
No but the fact that they went to get fucking snus aside, we can imagine they also stopped at the Ikea in Haparanda (the town you pass when going to Sweden from Finland by car in the north) and had a lovely meatball date there! 🥰
#i think it's safe to assume they (or someone from the crew) go to sweden for snus import purposes regularly#i find it so funny how selling snus is illegal in finland but in sweden they just. have it on the shelves full on display??#like ''please help yourself to some snus we have plenty for everyone!''#and these losers bring it to finland and pass it around in the black market for garbage-filled mouth-teabags 😂#because meanwhile in finland you're not even allowed to have regular tobacco products on display in stores#anon asks#ollixtommi#answered asks

I'm considering taking a trip from Belgium to Finland over the holidays, anything I should be aware of before I start arranging things?
Oooh, that looks like a very interesting itinerary! Be sure to take plenty of good photos to share.
The Finnish part should be pretty straightforward, the only challenge I can think of is getting from Haparanda to the Finnish side, as (as was discussed earlier) there is no direct passenger train connection. I presume there is a bus, though people from the North could know better. I must admit I've never been further north than Oulu in Finland.
The main line from Kemi (I presume from your map) via Oulu, Seinäjoki and Tampere is no doubt the fastest route from the North to Helsinki, but the route via Kajaani, Kuopio and Mikkeli would be much more pictoresque, if that would be of interest to you. I remember the Oulu–Kajaani line being selected as one of the most beautiful in Europe by some media or other. Plus there would be a better chance for spotting some of the rarer Finnish rolling stock in the east.
If anyone else has any ideas, do feel free to comment!
