Kinktober Day 19
Shibari - Ricky
!dom Ricky
Tumblr media
Ricky loved the finer things in life, he was young and rich, tall and handsome after all, and you fit that mould perfectly. Dainty, elegant, his perfect match. You were submissive and subservient, but fiery and independent, challenging him when needed and giving in when needed too. You obliged his desires, so many of them were based around making you up, decorating you in different ways, and his latest interest was exactly that.
Shibari. A Japanese-born erotica performed with a submissive being tied by intricate ropes, placed into positions that they normally could not be in, and the dominant having their way with them. The rope that Ricky had purchased was red silk, metres long and beautifully crafted, you wouldn’t dare ask how much it cost, but it is handmade and perfect in every way.
“Baobei,” Ricky soothes you, his hands expertly working on the ropes, tying shapes to frame your curves, to restrict and constrict you, “You look so beautiful like this.”
You stand in front of your mirrored robe, able to admire yourself as Ricky adds more and more into the pattern of ties that he makes on your body. When he steps back, you see that he has you decorated as if you were wearing full body harnesses, and you wonder what else he plans to do to you. The loops in some of the knots did not go unnoticed, your interest piqued as you prepared yourself to be further tied, already feeling yourself begin to get wet, knowing just how well Ricky takes care of you.
“Where do you want me?” You ask innocently, turning to face him while he leans down to kiss you, his hands absentmindedly exploring the rope all over your body.
“Let’s lay you down,” Ricky murmurs, “Knees up at your chest.”
You nod, taking his hands as he guides you onto the bed, resting your head in amongst the pillows, you bring your knees up as he instructed and you hold your ankles to stay in place. Ricky now takes the rope, loose pieces at your wrist he ties them through the loops on your ankles, meaning that instead of holding yourself, the rope does it for you, and he repeats that at the other side. You feel so exposed now, and from the look in Ricky’s eyes, he really fucking likes it. His hand moves to your core, perfectly on show for him with the way that he has your ankles tied, and he traces his fingers up your slit, pressing into you and humming in content as you contract around him, adjusting to the initial stretch.
“Are you going to take me like this?” You ask him, although you know the answer, “Please take me, I want it.”
Ricky laughs, his fingers curling inside you, thumb on your clit to try and prepare you quicker, so desperate to get his fill. His other hand is at his chest, beginning to unbutton his shirt, not wanting to waste even a single second. You throw your head back, just about the only movement you can make, moaning loudly with each thrust of his fingers, he knows your body so well it is so easy for him to work you up towards your first orgasm, you barely notice as he drops his slacks, tugging his underwear down with them, only alert once the weight on the bed shifts as he positions himself in line with you, his hand now wrapped around his shaft to line himself up the moment that he pulls his other hand away.
“Oh, god,” He groans, eyes rolling back as he enters you all the way, “You feel fucking incredible.”
Unable to move, you try with your all to touch him somehow, but soon give up, allowing him to fuck you with as much effort as he wants, right now that is so much, his hands on your hips to keep you steady, grateful to be so much taller than you, he is able to reach over your body to kiss you, tongue twisting with yours, moans matching thrusts, obsessed and so fucking turned on by how powerless and fucking beautiful you look like this. A work of art, as he tells you over and over, his beautiful girl, his princess, his treasure, baobei.
“Quanrui,” You moan, his Chinese name rolling off your tongue so much sweeter, so deep in your pleasure, “Gonna cum, I’m so close, please…”
The angle has you seeing stars, each thrust has you reeling, thighs shaking, and if not for the rope keeping them apart you are certain they would be closing around Ricky’s hips. Having no control, Ricky knows better than to even try to deny you, this is not the time for edging, nor overstimulation, though in other circumstances he would definitely do so. This time, he takes a hand to your clit to help you, his thrusts maintaining the pace and intensity in order to get you there, and that he does, oh fuck, that he does.
You cum on his cock, body shaking, rope rubbing against your skin, pulsating around him and crying his name soundless at first, and louder as you come back down to earth. Ricky’s thrusting goes off rhythm just as your peak descends, his orgasm washing over him as he thrusts into you erratically, filling you easily, certain to overflow. It feels so good, both of you are obsessed with the feeling, the act, the risk - though not really, you are definitely on birth control - associated, and you let out a whine as he pulls out of you after he is done, savouring the feeling of his seed dripping out of you as he begins to untie the rope.
You let your body fall limp once you are freed, and Ricky gently kisses the worst of the rope burn, though none is so bad, the material as gentle as he is, you would expect nothing less.
“That was so hot,” Ricky comments as he pulls the last of the rope away, and takes your hand to guide you to sit up, “But maybe I’ll tie you upside down next time.”

"Welcome, what would you like?" ✰ X GN READER! ✰
Tumblr media
[♡ Marla, Tyler, and Jack order at a cafe you work at. ♡]
✧.* Marla ✧.*
You never expected to receive any customers since it was an awfully slow day. The cafe was dimly lit with a few chairs and a table in one corner, and a broken record player in the other. You stood around fiddling with one of the bleached coffee filters until the door chimed and a sliver of sunlight creeped into the building for a split second.
A skinny, disheveled woman walked up to the counter and glanced at the menu, then you, then the menu again, and then back to you.
"Hello, what would you like?" you asked, giving her a small smile.
She took a long drag of her cigarette while looking around the cafe. You noticed that she had messy, black hair, slept-in makeup, and a silk night gown of sorts on.
"Something dark, like my soul," she said with a scratchy voice. Probably from the smoking, you guessed.
You simply nodded at the woman and grabbed a cup and a marker.
"Your name?"
"Why the hell do you need my name? It's emptier in here than it is on Paper Street at midnight," she croaked.
You stared at her, your eyebags mirroring hers, and didn't respond.
"Marla. Marla Singer."
You wrote her name on the cup in thick, black letters. Getting her order correct wouldn't be a hard task at all. You brewed a fresh cup of the strongest coffee you could find and gave it to her.
She glanced at your handwriting on the cup. "I'm not paying for this, but here," she said as she laid a torn piece of paper and two quarters on the counter. "...thanks," you responded, grabbing the items and pocketing them.
Marla hurried out of the cafe like an alley cat, not glancing back at you even once.
✰ ✰ ✰ Tyler ✰ ✰ ✰
The record player in the cafe was attempting to play a Pixies vinyl, but it was so scratched up that it sounded more like nails on a chalkboard that it did music. A few customers came and went, the usual cappuccino or grande latte.
The bell that was tied loosely onto the door handle chimed and fell with a sad clank as a tall, nicely-tanned man walked in. He didn't even bother picking up the bell. The man strolled and leaned over with one elbow resting on the countertop and the other on his waist.
Upon closer inspection, he had multiple cuts and bruises on his face and mid-section (which was clearly visible since he was wearing a crop top). Was he even wearing underwear? You didn't ask questions, because frankly, you don't get paid enough to.
He slid his red glasses to the tip of his nose and stared into your eyes. He had a faint black eye. Maybe from fighting, or falling down the stairs.
"Hello, what would you like?"
The man gave you a wide grin, but you noticed there was dried blood on his lips.
"Just your heart, gorgeous," he said with a wink.
You looked at him and furrowed your eyebrows. Who even is this guy?
"Yeah, not happening," you said.
He clicked his tongue and placed both hands on the counter, looming over you.
"You sure I can't convince you?" he whispered lowly.
He leaned in and parted his lips, causing you to place a muffin into his mouth. He jolted in surprise and looked bewildered.
The man scoffed and made his way out of the cafe. He took the muffin with him though. He threw a card onto the floor and kicked the door open with his foot.
After he was no longer in sight, you went over and picked the card off the floor. It was a business card that said: "Paper Street Soap Co. All Natural. Handmade. (288) 555-0153. Tyler Durden. 537 Paper Street • Bradford • 19808."
"Tyler Durden." Interesting.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ Jack (The Narrator) ੈ✩‧₊˚
A man dressed in a suit and black shades has been sitting in the cafe for the whole afternoon. Not once has he gotten up to order anything. He just sits there reading his newspaper, sometimes dozing off for a few minutes, or mumbling about some club.
You decide to walk up to him and make small talk, or at least offer him a coffee. There was no one else here, so you didn't see the harm in letting him stay a little longer.
"Hello," you said as you stood in front of the table he was sitting at.
The man looked up at you, acknowledged your presence with a "hmm," and went back to reading his paper.
"Do you want any coffee or anything? What would you like?" you tried again.
The man placed his newspaper on the table firmly and stared at you menacingly. He had dark circles under his eyes like he hadn't slept for days, some light stubble, and a mole on the bottom of his right cheek.
You stepped back from the table and shrugged.
"Oh well, I tried," you sighed.
The man got up and left his newspaper behind. He left the cafe with a low "see you."
You grabbed the newspaper and noticed a "HELLO my name is: JACK" label that was stuck onto one of the pages. You kept the newspaper in case he ever came back again.

Dark chocolate with prompets 9 and 14 for Nami (Never again.💀🤣LMAO)
Yandere Nami x GN!Reader
1k words
Prompts:
You look perfect! I knew this would look great on you!
I checked every store in the area, but couldn’t find what I wanted. So I tried to make it myself… Please stop staring at it. Don’t laugh either!
“Hurry up and come out already, it can’t take that long to get dressed!”
Nami’s foot was tapping from the other side of the curtain. She had never been the patient type, especially not when it came to you. When she came back from shopping, she’d all but thrown the bag at you while ordering that you put it on. You were quick to do so, not wanting to give her a reason to be upset.
The outfit was stunning, as were all of the other ones she’s given you during your time together. Also like the rest of her “gifts” to you, it looked horrendously expensive. The grand total has likely already been added to your mounting debt to her. Nami wasn’t subtle about keeping you under her thumb by any means necessary, but doing so financially was her favorite method.
Dwelling on it in your changing room wasn’t going to fix anything, you might as well step out. Taking a deep breath to steady your nerves, you pull aside the curtain separating you from your controlling girlfriend. Her sour face immediately lifted into a smile as she took in your appearance.
“You look perfect! I knew this would look great on you!“ Nami cooed while hurrying over to circle around you and fully take in the outfit. Her hands ghosted over you as she made little adjustments and straightened the clothing where she saw fit.
Nami clapped her hands, “I really outdid myself this time, it’s perfect! It just needs one more thing to pull it all together.” She spun on her heels and went over to her bedside table. Items were shuffled around for a moment before she withdrew her hand, clutching a small white box in it.
The confidence she had previously been sporting had abruptly vanished. Her eyes no longer looked into yours and her nails picked at the ribbon tied around the box. She seemed almost… Bashful? An odd sight to see from someone like her. You didn’t think she knew how to be bashful.
“I checked every store in the area, but couldn’t find what I wanted. So I tried to make it myself,” there was a brief pause, then the box was thrust into your waiting hands. You’ve never seen Nami look so nervous in regards to you. You hesitate to open the present, not sure what to expect to find inside of it.
The silk, orange ribbon comes undone from a light tug. Next to go was the lid, which popped off with a similar level of ease. Inside was a velvet bag. The suspense and mystery kept building. You scoop out the bag and set the box aside.
Nami’s eyes were boring into you as you fumbled to get it open. The last thing you wanted was to make her mad because you were taking too long, so you hurried to get whatever was hidden inside out. Your fingers close around something cold and metallic, and you waste no time pulling it out.
Enclosed in your hand is a small, dainty necklace. A thin, pale gold chain held together several orange jewels. They were all slightly different shapes, and the spaces between each varied significantly. At roughly the center of it, a small charm with Nami’s name spelt out in what appeared to be small diamonds glittered magnificently in the light.
This necklace was very clearly handmade, you would’ve been able to figure that out without Nami explicitly telling you so.
Your silence was not well received. “Please stop staring at it. Don’t laugh either! It’s not that bad! Well, maybe the clasp is, but Usopp did that part, not me!” Nami was floundering to defend herself from what she was now interpreting as an embarrassing situation.
In all honesty, you hadn’t even realized you were smiling. Despite everything and the trials and tribulations of your relationship, you couldn’t help but be charmed by the gesture. Nami’s love language towards you was gift giving, but it always consisted of things she either bought or stole. To go through the effort of making you something by hand, it made your chest feel warm. Still, now wasn’t the time to focus on how you felt, you needed to do damage control.
“N-No! I wasn’t laughing! I love it, I’m just really happy.”
Her fit halted, and she stared at you in shock. Quickly, she composed herself and tried to laugh it off. “Oh, yeah, of course you do.” The necklace was snatched out of your hand and she slipped behind you to put it around your neck. You could hear her struggling with the clasp behind you, but wisely chose not to comment on it.
As soon as it was on, she whirled you around so she could admire her handiwork on you. The previous almost-meltdown was long forgotten as she fawned over your newest accessory, “Excellent, this compliments you beautifully!”
Your arm was linked with hers, and she tugged you along towards the door, “Now that that’s taken care of, let’s go! We have a reservation at a nice restaurant, and I do not want to miss the opportunity to show off what’s mine.” Her manicured nails grazed your skin possessively, reminding you precisely of your place in the relationship.
The euphoric flood of fondness almost made you forget where you actually stood with her. Oh right, you were just a shiny piece of eye candy for her to flaunt. How foolish of you to push that aside all because you received a touching gift. A gift that you were belatedly realizing was little more than a glorified collar. A means to let everyone know who you should be returned to should you become separated.
There isn’t much you can do about it, though. Everything will go smoother if you just passively go along with her wishes, so that’s what you will do. Complacency is your best tool for dealing with this situation after all. Her happiness is more important than your own.

Violet eyes and beguiling smiles, hands tighten royal purple silks after you squirm for the second time. A large hand brushes a stray strand of hair out of your face before a finger taps your nose in gentle admonishment. You weren't supposed to move remember? A canvas is supposed still and motionless for it's painter.
You drop your head back upon the pillow, soft humming fills the air as you hear glass jars being rearranged. His hands gently tug on the silks around your wrist, making sure he hadn't made them too tight. A shakey breath as his hand moves down from your wrists above your head. Featherlight as they glide along your soft skin. You bite back a whine when the warm of his hand leaves.
Eyelids flutter shut as a wet cold paint touches your bare collarbone. Perfect lips curl up and violet eyes gleam at the sound of your very human heart racing. He drags the brush down in a straight line, the paint dries within seconds. You can only whimper as more lines adorn your skin. Purple, violet, gold come alive upon your body. Soft gasps when his paint brush drags across bare sensitive parts of you.
His alluring voice reaches your ears. Just stay still a little longer for your painter. A little longer and you will be his greatest work yet. It's exciting for him too you know? He's never painted upon a human before and he knows he's the only one to ever have the honor of seeing you like this, bare, vulnerable and made even more beautiful through his own talents. Of course... your own natural beauty eclipses any star, just think of him as putting on a handmade frame for a masterpiece.
Slow agonizingly blissful minutes crawl by before he declares his work is done, that you are perfect. Without undoing the silk ties binding you, he brings over an oversized mirror that looks small in his hands. In it you see yourself, nestled among silk, pillows and blankets, purple around your wrists and upon your body. He interrupts your thoughts, picking up his brush to sign his name in perfect cursive upon your upper inner thigh.
He leans down to kiss you. Perhaps, he muses, he should make it a permanent feature upon your skin, where only he and you can see it. You would love that wouldn't you? Don't worry he'll undo the bindings in a bit... he just wants to admire his perfect piece for a little longer.

FIERROCHASE WEDDING SUMMARY!!!
wanna know how our special day went? here you go :)
[NOT MY FANFIC]
[MY FRIEND WROTE IT FOR TODAY]
Boston weather was always a coin toss. During the summer months, it could be gloriously warm and sunny, miserably hot and humid, or, especially during the first part of June, even chilly and rainy. Most summers on the back bay were a mixture of all these conditions, plus a splattering of dramatic thunderstorms, just to keep the grass growing.
But today? Today was perfect.
All day, the weather had been clear skies and a cool breeze. Even though Frey wasn’t supposed to make an appearance, Magnus couldn’t help but feel like he had something to do with the strangely favorable turn in the forecast. The sun peeked through the partly cloudy sky to dress the sides of the chase mansion in warm summer sunlight. It was beautiful. For so many years, whenever Magnus looked at this building, he’d felt like some angry god had installed a permanent storm cloud over the roof. It had always been shrouded in an aura of foreboding, always surrounded by darkness, and always made him feel a little uncomfortable. But today, with the sun shining warmly and the breeze rustling the paper streamers and handmade signs the homeless kids at the chase space had insisted on personally designing and hanging from nearly every window, even the gargoyles seemed to look a bit friendlier.
As the sun started to set, there was a vibrant buzz of excitement on the top floor patio as friends, family, and the current residents of the Chase Space milled around in excitement and chatted about the evening’s events. The space had been done up beautifully by Samirah, Mallory, and Annabeth (who had done all the organizing, and most of the arguing about the way things should look) with help from Halfborn, Tj, and Percy (who had mostly broken up said arguments and lifted the heavy objects). It wasn’t extravagant, but there were chairs with little flower bouquets tied to them, and a little raised platform for the two of them to stand on, and Blitzen had personally arranged several extremely expensive looking potted flower arrangements for either side, so they would be framed by lilies and magnolias and roses and other flowers Magnus couldn’t remember the names of as they said their ‘I do's.’
The bedrooms on the third floor had been converted into changing rooms for the event. In the one on the south side of the house, Magnus was unfolding and refolding the paper with his vows on it as he looked out over the stunning view of the back bay.
The day was finally here. He was finally going to marry Alex.
In front of everyone, he was going to say a lot of things about how much he loved Alex, how much Alex meant to him, how much he needed Alex, how he would always be with Alex until the end of the world- literally.
“I think I’m gonna puke.”
Behind him, several heads turned as Magnus gripped the edge of the railing on the little patio he was standing on. Blitzen came up behind him as he leaned over it, patting his back reassuringly as Magnus made sounds much more like someone who had eaten bad falafel than someone who was about to experience the happiest day of their life.
“Hey kid. Let’s back away from the railing before you go headfirst into the bushes. That would not be a good look on your wedding day.” Carefully, Blitzen pulled him back into the room, sitting him down in one of the available chairs and giving him some very fatherly and encouraging pats on the shoulder. He was really putting in the work Frey probably should have been there doing…
Around him, everyone was putting the finishing touches on their outfits. All perfectly tailored, of course, which Blitzen had done much preening about in the hours leading up to now. Despite their extremely varied figures, Tj, Halfborn, Hearthstone, and Blitzen were all dressed in the same suit. It was simple but elegant, a wool suit tailored to fit each of their varying frames, smooth silk shirts, a professional but understated waistcoat, and a pair of brown leather shoes to match their ties. The only differences were that Halfborn and Tj were dressed in shades of brown and green, and Hearthstone and Blitzen were wearing warmer, more sunny but not overbearingly bright colors. Halfborn was also sporting a kilt which was, apparently, the same color as Mallory’s outfit. The pair of them had insisted on matching separately, then found out about each other's request and insisted on NOT matching, then had some kind of argument that had begun with words and ended… well, still with tongues. Magnus hadn’t asked a lot of questions after that, and had just told Blitzen to make an executive decision. Seeing the amount of leg hair on display now, he wondered if Blitzen should be trusted with too many more of those, even if they DID relate to fashion.
Magnus himself was dressed in the same suit, except his was a deep, forest green, his waistcoat was white and had some kind of a subtle metallic shine to it, and his silk shirt was a light, blush pink.
Alex’s colors. He was happy to be wearing them.
His hair was trimmed but still longer, hanging neat and orderly around his anxious face. On the lapel of his suit, he was wearing a pin with the same symbol Alex had tattooed on his neck, the two entwined serpents, the reclaimed symbol of Loki pinned just over his heart.
“Gettin’ cold feet, Magnus?” Halfborn was all smiles and mead-blushed cheeks, standing with one arm on the back of a chair as he worked his way through his second horn of booze this hour. He had insisted it was Norse tradition to get absolutely hammered for the entire ceremony and reception, and when no one had joined him, he’d insisted he’d carry the load alone. “Don’t drop your guts in here. It’s much more romantic if Alex gets to watch.”
Tj sighed, shaking his head as he put a hand on Halfborn’s huge shoulder and patted it a couple times. “Halfborn, I think you’ve had enough to drink until after the ceremony. Magnus is just excited, not getting cold feet. Right, Magnus?” Tj sent him a bright, confident and reassuring smile. His wedding suit was spotless, perfectly fitted and pressed with the care and attentiveness he always gave his regular uniform. For the first time in a long time, he wasn’t carrying his weapon. They were all on the property (just in case) but he looked a bit strange not having it right over his shoulder where it usually was. If it had been in his hands, he thought, Tj would look battle ready even in a wedding tuxedo.
“Right.” Magnus’ voice was shaky. “Totally.”
All four of his wedding party exchanged a look. Each one of them took a seat, and Halfborn even set his drink down in its little stand as he half stumbled onto one of the couches and pinched his face into a decently impressive impression of a sober man.
Hearthstone sat nearest to Magnus, giving his arm a reassuring squeeze before he pulled his attention to sign to him.
‘It’s normal to be nervous. No worries. Big day.’ He exaggerated the gesture for big with an appropriate facial expression, making it clear he understood how nervous Magnus really was.
“I’d be nervous marrying Alex too.” Halfborn agreed. “The Argr is a bit unpredictable. He might get you up to the altar and-“ Beside him, Tj subtly kicked his leg, causing Halfborn to let out an “ouch” followed by some apologetic muttering.
“Everyone gets nervous on their wedding day.” Blitzen agreed, looking over at Halfborn like he might want a turn. “That’s why there’s alcohol. To take the edge off the jitters. You’re fine, kid. You’ve handled way more difficult things than saying a few words.”
“The last time I said a few words about Alex I embarrassed myself in front of everyone.” Magnus leaned forward, dropping his head into his hands and making another one of those bad-falafel noises. “What if I mess up again? What if my vows suck?” His head shot up as he looked over at Hearth, eyes wide. “What if I lean in to kiss Alex and I puke into the kiss??”
Hearthstone’s expression was a pretty clear don’t-be-ridiculous look (mixed with some disgust as he pictured a vomit-kiss unwillingly), but he still signed it out to reassure him.
‘You will be fine. No puke in mouth. Won’t happen.’
“And if it does happen.” Halfborn assured him, his voice slightly slurred, “I’ll distract everyone by puking with you.”
“If anyone but Magnus throws up on these suits, I will personally drag the responsible party to Helheim and hand them over to the goddess herself.” Blitzen said coolly, eyeing halfborn with a narrowed gaze.
Somehow, that made the tension in Magnus’ stomach settle a little. He even managed a laugh, fiddling with the paper with his vows on it again. “I’m glad you’re all here. I really didn’t know if Alex was going to agree to this or not. I bet they’re having a way easier time getting ready across the hall.” Alex was always so cool and calm and collected. Magnus was pretty sure his finance wasn’t considering which of his uncle’s expensive display vases it would be best to toss his cookies into.
“So, is it time for this then?” Halfborn patted the small, flat green box tied with a black bow he’d been entrusted with earlier that day. It was a decent size, but it looked small in halfborn’s massive hands. Inside was the gift he’d gotten for Alex for their wedding day. It wasn’t a lot, but he’d put a lot of effort into it.
Magnus felt the butterflies that had been making his stomach their home for the last few days make a reappearance. Suppressing them must have pissed them off cause they were fluttering around his insides with a vengeance. “Y-yeah… I guess it’s probably time?”
Halfborn stood with a nod, carrying the box towards the door. “Gotcha. I’ll be delivering the package then!”
———-
Across the hall, the other wedding party was causing so much noise, it was a miracle the boys couldn’t hear it.
“Catch it! Grab her! Don’t let her get to the door!” Furniture was overturned, pillows were torn and weapons were flying as Samirah, Alex, and Mallory chased something around the room.
It had appeared when Alex had been checking the mirror to make sure the wedding suit was sitting right on her (for the fifteenth time in as many minutes) slithering up onto the fabric of the shoulder and whispering in her ear things nobody wanted to hear on any day, much less at their wedding. It had taken her a moment to figure out where the voice was coming from, but had spotted the tip of a little green head just over her shoulder in the mirror.
Alex wasn’t willing to listen to bullshit any day, but especially not today. She’d grabbed and thrown the snake against a wall, the snake had hit the surface and flattened like one of those rubber sticky toys and slid down between the wall and a couch, and that had started a mess of moving things to get at it.
“I know it’s you, mom!” Alex hissed, rolling on the floor and reaching under a chair, nearly missing grabbing the snake’s emerald green tail. “You weren’t invited! What are you doing here?”
The snake slithered over to a bookshelf, lifting up its head to peer at them. “Don’t be ridiculousss, Alexx …” the s sounds on the ends of his words were lengthened by the flicking tongue peeking out between those scaly lips, though it wasn’t clear if it was intentional or something Loki was doing for dramatic effect. “No child of mine will be married without my presenccce. I'm hurt you didn’t invite me. What have I ever done to deserve such disssregard-“
The snake’s speech was interrupted when a glowing spearhead sunk into the wood of the bookcase beside it, forcing Loki to dodge and slither away again.
Samirah scowled, leaping over to retrieve her weapon and spinning around to look for where he had gone. “Nobody is humoring you today, Loki. You know exactly why you’re not welcome here.”
“Sorry, I know you’re family and all,” Mallory chimed in, her twin daggers flashing threateningly as she scanned the room for any sign of movements. “But the guest list is exclusive, and Sam and I are sort of responsible for watchin it. We’re gonna have to remove you if you don’t leave on your own.” Lighting fast, she stabbed her dagger down by a new moving lump in the carpet, nearly missing the worm. She scowled as she tried to land several more jabs in the twisting, contorting shape.
Samirah came to help Alex up off the floor as Mallory attempted to turn the rug in the room into Swiss cheese, straightening out the ruffled edges of the wedding suit. “Mallory is right, Alex. It’s our job to handle things like this. Don’t go jumping around and ruining your outfit.” As she spoke, she picked up her axe from a table beside her, throwing it as the snake came slithering out of the carpet and nearly pinning Loki to the wooden floor. The axe sunk in the old wood floorboards deep, but a few inches too far to the right, letting the snake slither away and under the door into the hallway.
“Oh Hel no.” Alex undid Sif’s garrote from her waist, making towards the door before both of the other women stopped her.
“And just where do you think you’re goin?” Mallory asked, raising one fiery red brow at her. She and Samirah were both dressed in shades of pink, though Mallory’s pink was more of a rose red sort of color. It was a knee length dress, suited to running around a room toppling over furniture, which was pleated and patterned with a traditional Scottish plaid. The plaid pattern extended to a piece of fabric which lay up over one shoulder and went back down her back, and there was a belt cinching the whole operation in at the waist. Beneath the plaid she was wearing a plain white shirt, making her wholly more prepared looking for a fight than really anyone else Alex had seen all day. “I just said I’ll handle it. It’s only one snake, even if it is Loki.” She brandished a knife, wiggling it threateningly. “Think I can’t dissipate a little illusion magic? I swear, I just gotta catch him and you won’t need to worry for the rest of the week. I’ll send whatever piece of him came crawling up here right back where it came.”
“Yeah, I’m sure you will. I just think it’ll go faster if we all handle it together.” Alex pushed out of their hold, heading for the door. Her hands were a little sweaty as she gripped her garrote. Why was Loki here? What did he want? Did he really care that much about this stupid wedding? It was just some words they were saying, it’s not like it was anything super serious. Why had Loki decided to meddle in her life  again? She wasn’t sure, but she was 100% sure that the ceremony couldn’t go on if there was a worm wiggling around the Chase Space. No, it was definitely not okay that Loki was here. Loki was the cause of Alex’s anxiety, and Alex was going to stay anxious until she personally sent Loki back to that stupid cave.
And anyways, it was better to be running around than sitting in this damn room counting down the minutes like she had been. Yes, definitely better to be chasing a snake that was actually your mother who is actually a mega-control-freak-shapeshifter than sitting in a stuffy old room staring at yourself in a mirror.
Just as she put a hand on the door, Samirah pulled her back, placing herself between the exit and her sister.
Samirah’s pink ensemble was much different than Mallory’s. Her dress was four or five shades of pink, and all layered organza. The skirt swept to the floor, and the sleeves were a sheer white lace that went all the way to her wrist, framed by loose curtains of the pink organza that fell delicately over her shoulders. With the hijab around her head, she looked a bit like an upside down rose the way the diagonal hanging layers of the dress cascaded around her form.
Sam may have looked nice, but blocking the door was a very dangerous move. Alex had to respect it a bit, but she didn’t have to agree with it.
“Sam, it’s my wedding day and I want to hunt a snake.” Alex’s voice was as tight as her grip on the garrote handles she was brandishing threateningly.
“No, you want to escape dealing with your anxiety by cutting something into a million pieces.” Sam corrected, folding her lace covered arms over her chest. “And while I understand that living in Valhalla has inclined you towards such… violent forms of stress relief, I’m not allowing you to do this today. It’s a little sliver of spirit. Easily dispersed. Loki is still weak and recovering from… last time.” Samirah sighed, taking Alex by the shoulders and forcing her to sit on one of the chairs. When she had finally wrestled the garrote out of her sister’s hands and secured it back around her waist, she knelt in front of her to hold them in her own. “There’s no reason to assume he could show up in any significant form. He didn’t even change shape once, so he must be too weak to manage it. He’s just trying to get in your head and ruin your wedding. You’ve proven over and over that he has no power over you. Don’t give up that control just because you’re nervous about the wedding. Let us handle it and you just stay here and relax.”
“No trouble at all, Fierro.” Mallory assured her, finally un-wedging her knife from the floorboards. “We’ll go deal with this. You wait here and look pretty.”
Alex made some sort of sound that was probably more jaguar than frustrated human, grabbing a pillow and vaulting off the couch to chuck it full speed at the wall. “I’m not going to sit around in this room like a decoration ! If my mom wants a piece of me I’ll give her one!”
“Alex, no!” Samirah grabbed her arm, giving her a stern look. “I know you’re anxious. I promise it will be fine. Really, I swear. Please, let me handle it? And just take a few minutes to calm down, okay?” Samirah put on her best pleading expression, her hold on her arm softening. “I just… I just want you to be happy. I don’t want you to worry about anything today. Please…”
Alex didn’t know what she was feeling. Confused, angry, startled, nauseous… all the emotions were building up all at once. She felt a strange, almost uncontrollable desire to shift. Felt like her skin was itching to change, like maybe if she became something slippery enough she could slide out of this mess, or maybe change into something with a roar loud enough to quiet the buzzing that had been in her head all day. She had almost been happy to see Loki. Not because she wanted to, but because it gave her something to focus on besides how she really felt about this whole wedding situation…
Scared.
After a long, silent stare-down, Alex crossed her arms and turned her head away, hoping she’d withdrawn fast enough to hide the way they were trembling. “Fine. Whatever. Call me when you need my help catching the slippery bastard.”
Samirah let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding, nodding with the warmest smile she’d had all day. “We’ll call if we need you. Come on, Mallory.”

[Song accompaniment: Wonder by Shawn Mendez]
Magnus had most often found it best to follow the rules. When his mom had been alive, she’d even accused him of being a little too well behaved sometimes, pinched his cheeks and told him he should sneak out or talk back. “Live a little, be a kid” or something like that. It wasn’t like he had a strong inclination towards the law or whatever, it was just usually easier and created less issues to do things the legal, reasonable way.
But, his two years on the streets had taught him a lot of things, and one of those things was that sometimes, breaking the rules was sort of a necessary thing. Like when you hadn’t eaten in three days and there was nothing edible in the dumpster, so you had to swipe a sandwich from a deli.
Or when your whole wedding party suddenly leaves your dressing room to deal with some kind of pest control emergency (since when did the Chase Space have worms?) and left you holding the box that someone else was supposed to deliver to your fiancée.
Magnus stood awkwardly in front of Alex’s dressing room door, lifting and lowering his hand a few times. Should he leave it and run? Should he stay? Did it really matter if they saw each other a little early?
Inside the room, Alex was sitting with her feet up on the couch, knees to her chest and thoughts racing. There was too much to consider. Her eyes settled on a little ship in a bottle on the bookshelf across from her as a storm started brewing in her mind.
Did Mangnus really want to marry her? Why were they getting married anyways? Mallory and halfborn broke up every other month and fought like crazy. What if they started fighting like that in a hundred years and wanted a divorce?
The ship in the bottle seemed to move, swaying on the waves of Alex’s frenzied thoughts.
Why was Loki here? Did he have some sort of plan to mess with her life again? Did he want to stop the marriage so that he could try and force her into another one like he tried to do to Samirah? Like she was almost forced to do when she took samirah’s place?
Her thoughts were so wild and all-encompassing that she didn’t notice the way her hands were shaking, didn’t notice the way her eyes were reddening. The memory of drinking out of the cup after Thrymm at her first wedding returned to her against her will. She’d been forced to do it, and the realization that the ceremony might have actually been completed made her almost as nauseatingly disgusted as the thought of sharing his backwash-wine did. She felt sick. The ship in the bottle seemed like it might capsize-
There was a knock at the door, followed by a familiar voice.
“Uh… hey Alex. It’s me.”
The noise stopped. The sky seemed to clear. Alex blinked, wiping something wet and hot away from her eyes as she looked at the ship on the shelf. It was still.
“I know I’m not supposed to see you yet. Or uh, well, I mean you’re not supposed to see me either. but… there’s no rules about our voices, right?”
On the other side of the door, Magnus was fidgeting anxiously, rolling up onto his toes and back onto his heels like a weird little doll, bobbing back and forth in a way that would have made Alex laugh if she could have seen. “I just came to bring you your gift.”
Alex glanced towards the door, her body uncurling from its little ball before she even thought about it. Her feet moved without her direction, like Magnus was a lighthouse in her little storm guiding her safely to shore. She stopped a foot or so from the door, finding it startlingly easy to level out her voice. “You are breaking the rules, chase.” Her voice was barely shaking. She felt warm. She always felt warm around Magnus.
Magnus felt his lips turn up into one of those stupid goofy smiles that always made Alex blush. He didn’t fight it. “Yeah well, you know, I figured you’d be way more into me if I broke a few rules.”
Alex laughed a little. The sound was genuine, so the edges of the sound were tinged with the lingering fear that Magnus always chased away. “You’re an idiot.”
“Ooh, careful. In a couple hours I’m going to be youridiot. Like, forever. You wouldn’t want to be married to an idiot, would you?”
“Probably not. Not unless he’s really hot. I mean, he’s gotta be really, really hot.”
Magnus’s grin got a little wider as he felt a swell of confidence. “Oh yeah? So you think I’m really really hot? Like really really really -“
“Alright chase, you’re pushing it. Three reallys? That’s crazy.”
By now, both of them were pressed up against the door. If there hadn’t been a piece of wood between them, they would have been forehead to forehead, nose to nose. Magnus swore he could feel Alex’s breath on his cheeks if he closed his eyes.
Alex felt completely calm. The rolling waves in her stomach had changed to a warm, bubbly feeling. Ah, right. What a dummy she’d been. Alex wasn’t marrying Magnus because someone told her to. She wasn’t marrying Magnus because he was strong or cool, or really really really hot.
Alex wanted to marry Magnus because to her, Magnus felt like home. She’s realized recently that Magnus was warm and summery and light, and that just being near him made her feel warm and summery too. Her whole life had been a hurricane of wild misfortune and crazy happenstance, everyone and everything whipping her wildly in every direction all at once.
But whenever Magnus was there, she knew she’d found the eye of the storm, and that was never going to change.
“This is crazy.” The words left her lips before she could stop them, and she felt a momentary pang of guilt and fear, her eyes flicking up to the wood as if she could peer through it to see Magnus's reaction. Crap.
“Yeah. It’s pretty crazy.” Magnus agreed, turning the box in his hands around a few times. “I mean, I never thought I’d get married. And I kind of thought if I did get married, I’d still be alive when it happened.”
“Ghost marriages exist.” Alex ventured, her brain fried from all the emotional ups and downs.
“Yeah, I know. We’re doing one I think.” Magnus pulled his head back from the door, reaching for the handle. “Here. This is for you.” He pulled the door open a crack, just enough to pass the box through. “Tj said I’m supposed to give you a gift before the ceremony? Halfborn was gonna bring it over but I guess we have worms…”
As if on cue, the sound of something crashing came from downstairs, followed by the sound of a berserker shouting at the top of his lungs.
“Must be big worms…”
Alex stepped away from the door and set the box down on a table, carefully untying the ribbon. Her hands started to shake again as she lifted the lid, carefully peeling back the tissue to see what was cradled inside.
After a few moments of terrifying silence from both Alex and the lower levels of the house, Magnus heard the loudest, most ridiculous laugh he’d ever heard come from behind the door. For a moment it made him smile, then his smile faltered slightly when it seemed like Alex was laughing so hard she couldn’t breathe. “What? I did my best!”
Alex was practically rolling over what she’d found in that box. In her hands she held a little clay figurine of (she was pretty sure) an animal, only she couldn’t tell what animal it was supposed to be. It was just big enough to fit in her palm, and seemed to be some kind of cow-goat-giraffe hybrid. It had a neck that was just a bit too long, short stubby little legs that came to strangely sharp points, what appeared to be a cat’s tail, and a lump of clay that was surely supposed to be designed into some kind of face, but Alex couldn’t for the life of her see it as much more than a smushed in thumb with eye holes that was smiling at her in a comically goofy way. The worst part was the little cow-giraffe’s dorky smile kind of looked like Magnus if she squinted. She had to put the figure down in the tissue so she didn’t break it as she nearly collapsed on the floor.
“Mag- Magnus. Please tell me-haha! T-tell me what the Helheim im looking at.”
Magnus was moping on the other side of the door, a serious pout on his face. “… you really can’t tell…?”
“Oh gods. Hahah! Go- go back to your room. Hah! Oh my gods… I’ll see you in an hour. I’m giving you the biggest goddamn kiss when it’s time.”
Alex couldn’t stop the laughs still slipping out of her lips as she picked up and cradled the little clay figurine in her hands like it was some kind of treasure. By the sound of Magnus’ excited little trot back to his side of the hall, it seemed like they were both in much better spirits.

It took the wedding party an hour to deal with the pest control issue, which fortunately meant they were done right on time to walk the aisle.
Unfortunately, that also meant that Mallory was walking the aisle with some kind of ash from an explosion on the left side of her skirt, and blitzen had to do a last minute patch of hearthstone’s sleeve, which had ripped in the scuffle with the worms. The state of them had confused Magnus, but they had all insisted it didn’t matter, and hurried into their places.
They’d definitely looked worse. At least Halfborn was still wearing his shirt.
As the sun set over the horizon, settling a halo of golden hour glow over their reception venue, the ceremony began.
The first down the aisle was the officiant, Jack.
It was really a good thing that most people in attendance could see through the mist, because for the few that couldn’t, he couldn’t imagine what display was replacing a self-levitating talking sword. They had briefly considered using someone else for this role, but upon being rejected, Jack had offered to MC via acapella renditions of all their favorite songs for the whole evening, and had swiftly been returned the offer of officiating. He floated quite impressively to the end of the aisle, then spun to face the crowd in a pretty show-offey flourish. Magnus figured he was probably smiling.
Up next were the boys. Tj walked the Aisle first, proudly taking his position at the side of the groom with a way too excited look on his face. He was followed swiftly by Halfborn, but only after Mallory had cursed him out in Gaelic and taken the mead horn from his hand that he’d been trying to walk down with.
After that it was Magnus’ turn. Gods he was terrified. Alex wasn’t even up there yet and he was terrified!
He took a deep breath, straightening his jacket and trying to settle his stomach as Blitzen and Hearthstone came up on either side of him.
Blitzen adjusted his own jacket, giving him a wink and a confident smile. “We got you, kid. No worries.”
Hearthstone nodded on his other side, signing ‘right beside you.’
Arms interlocked in what had to be a cheesy way, they made their way down the aisle together. Magnus was glad for the handhold, because when he started making eye contact with people, he felt like his knees might give out. He spotted Annabeth and Percy in the crowd, his cousin waving and smiling sweetly at him. Percy looked as cool and calm as ever. How did he do that all the time?
The walk to the altar felt like it took forever. By the time they stopped, Magnus wondered if they’d missed the ceremony altogether.
“Welcome señor! Now that the groom has arrived, it’s time for the ladies~.”
The crowd mercifully turned their attention away from Magnus. Blitzen and Hearthstone stayed beside him, holding his hands and giving him reassuring squeezes as they watched the entrance.
Mallory came first. She’d made a good fuss about it earlier in the day, but she seemed happy now to be filling the role of flower girl. Most of her argument had been they hadn’t needed a flower girl, and if Samirah wanted one so bad how come she didn’t throw the flower then, and of course Alex had enjoyed the little spat and not helped settle it at all by saying she didn’t care either way. In the end, Mallory had agreed to be the “best damn cailín bláthanna anyone had ever seen”, and Magnus had to admit she was doing pretty well. Although it should be said there wasn’t much to throwing flower petals.
When Mallory joined them on the altar, Jack's blade seemed to brighten up a little more, his runes glowing a soft pink as he spoke again. “Señors and señioritas, would you please join me and rise for the presentation of Alex Fierro?”
Eager smiles filled the faces as the door to the top patio of the Chase Mansion opened, and Samirah and Alex stepped out into the light of the setting sun.
And oh, gods, did Magnus nearly fall over.
Alex was dressed in a suit that hugged her body in every proper way. It wasn’t like his, it was… hard to describe. The base color wasn’t too far off the green of his own suit, but it was accented with beautiful shades of pink lining some of the seams and peeking out between the folds of the suit around the neck. Where Magnus's suit had sharp, smart lines that gave him an air of masculinity, Alex’s outfit was soft curves and gentle slopes. The way it moved made it seem like Alex was switching genders with every step. Like she was glowing with the sunset and becoming one with the wind. Like the breeze tossing his hair to the side might have also subtly changed the shape of his nose. Trailing behind him and draping off the back of the coat was a long, elegant train. It was a gradient pink to white, and glittered with the adornment of several hundred tiny crystals. Each one of them glittered a different color depending on the way the light hit them, making the whole thing seem to glitter in the setting sun. It seemed to be attached to the suit jacket in several places, at the shoulders, the waist… When Alex turned to pull the train from the stairs, her silhouette was so completely feminine. The suit seemed to shift fully into a dress, and the dress seemed to curve around her body perfectly. When the train was free and Alex faced front again, the suit came back into view, and the heavy stare that Alex leveled at him combined with the full frontal focus of the suit snapped him straight in the opposite direction so hard he almost fell into Blitzen.
For the first time, his sense of Alex’s gender was a mystery.
Blitzen steadied him, nodding appreciatively. “I know, Magnus.” He patted his pseudo-son on the back, leaving the ‘I outdid myself’ silent.
Alex took Samirah’s arm as the door closed behind them, and the pair of them made their way towards the altar. With every step, Magnus swore he could see Alex shift and change. He was fluid, harmonious, breathtakingly beautiful. As Alex got closer he could see the little bits of makeup she’d put on, and as he came up to the altar, Magnus said a rushed prayer to his dad that he wouldn’t fall over when Blitzen and Hearthstone let him go.
Samirah gave Alex a kiss on the cheek, whispering something in her ear and left to take her spot on the Altar.
Blitzen stepped up to Alex first, somewhat awkwardly reaching out to take her hand and shake it. “Alright, Alex. We’re handing him off. It’s a big responsibility.”
If Alex was nervous, it didn’t show. His expression was confident and maybe a little cocky as he shook Blitzen’s hand. “Yeah, I know.”
“You take care of him properly.”
“I will.”
“Cause if you don’t, you know we can-“
Hearthstone cleared his throat, raising one thin brow when Blitzen turned to him with a scowl. The attending audience laughed politely. “Alright, alright. I get it.”
Hearthstone stepped down to join him, smiling and nodding once before he signed. ‘We are happy to be here. Happy for both of you.’ He turned to Magnus when he signed ‘both’. He reached out his hand towards Alex, who placed her hand in his. He guided Alex up to the altar, then carefully placed his hand in Magnus’ hand, giving them both a little squeeze before he let go.
Magnus wasn’t sure, but he thought he might have seen hearthstone brush away a tear when he and blitz went to sit down.
“Aaaalrighty then, let’s get to it!” Jack said happily, swaying excitedly back and forth as he started in on the ceremony. Since Jack was a minister (for some reason) ordained a long time ago, his ceremony didn’t deviate too far from the one they had attended (and ruined?) before. They each shared a drink out of the same cup of wine, Jack floated sideways and impressively delivered a proper blessing on their rings while using himself as the tool of blessing, and there even seem to be a fairly targeted break in the clouds when they took turns slipping the rings on, filled with the warmth of summer.
“Now that someone is done showing off ,” Jack said with a sour tone as their magical halo of ring-exchanging light dimmed and the sun finally began to dip all the way down. He muttered something that made his runes glow just barely, then brightened up as he floated a little higher again. “Magnus, you may say your vows to your beloved~.”
“Right. Cool.” Magnus smiled, still holding onto Alex’s hand where Hearthstone had joined them. Should he go for the paper with just one hand? Was it okay to let go? Probably not. Best to keep holding on, right? He didn’t want to let Alex go anyways. With one hand, he dug into his pocket for the folded up paper with his vows. Then, still holding his hand, he did his best to unfold them against his leg with his one free hand, smoothing it out clumsily and nearly dropping it.
Could Alex have let him go and helped him out? Absolutely. Was he enjoying this display of genuine awkward lovable idiocy too much to help? Absolutely.
As he watched Magnus finally get a hold of the situation (and the paper), he couldn’t help the snort of laughter that broke out of him. He waved off Magnus’ confused look with his free hand, gesturing for him to read his vows as the crowd giggled with him.
Was he ever going to let go of Magnus’ hand?
Absolutely not.
“Okay, got it.” Magnus smiled sheepishly, hoping the hand Alex was holding wasn’t too clammy. He gave her an apologetic smile as he cleared his throat and glanced at the paper.
“Alex,” the name came out a little awkward, but he smiled through it. “Ever since you came to Valhalla and garroted my head off, I was intrigued by you.” He glanced up to see if Alex was still there, then back down at the paper.
Yep, still there.
“You were mysterious and mesmerizing, but I wanted to know more. I wanted to know you.” The words were coming easier now, but Magnus still felt like if he looked up he might start remembering how he’d felt a few hours before, and he just really didn’t need the thought of bad falafel at this exact moment. “And… through these years we’ve been together, as I’ve come to know you…” he looked up. It mattered this time. He had to look up, and when he met Alex’s eyes, he felt like he might not even need the paper anymore.
Still held on to it though, just in case.
“I think I’ve finally found what I’m looking for.” He smiled, the tension leaving him. For a minute, he felt like maybe they weren’t standing on a stage in front of a bunch of people. Maybe they were somewhere alone, maybe he was just telling Alex these things in private. They were sitting at a campfire, huddled together, things were undefined but Magnus knew what he knew, what he felt, and what he needed to say. “The piece of you that makes me vow to love you and stay by your side forever. And that piece is you, Alex. Who you really are. With all your compassion, courageousness, and with everything you’ve been through, you make me admire you more every day.” He smiled, squeezing the hand he still hadn’t let go of. “I love every part of you, Alex. And I want to stay with you forever, past ragnarok.”
There was a little cheer around the crowd, as well as what seemed like some sniffling sounds emanating from Jack’s blue glowing runestones. “Couldn’t have said it better myself señor.”
Magnus glanced towards Hearth and Blitz, both of whom gave him a thumbs up. Tj patted him on the shoulder, whispering “Great job, Magnus. The hard part is over!” In his ear.
Magnus smiled and nodded, still holding Alex’s hand like a lifeline as he shoved the paper into his pocket, missed, bent to pick it up, tried to shove it in again, missed again-
After watching him struggle, Alex sighed and shook his head, reaching out to take it. He mercifully did not release his hand, using one of his own to fold the sheet back up as the crowd laughed some more.
“Here.” He leaned over, tucking it into Magnus’ pocket. “Try not to lose it.”
“Right.” He nodded, still grinning dumbly as Alex rolled her eyes and shook her head.
“Okay Señiorita, it is officially your turn to confess your undying love for Magnus.” Jack directed, floating a little closer to Alex.
“Cool.” Alex nudged the sword back into place with an elbow. “Personal space, please.” For the first time since coming up to the altar she looked nervous. Magnus could tell, even if Alex didn’t want him to tell. It was reassuring, feeling the way Alex’s hand trembled slightly in his own, noticing that Alex was just as eager to hold on. Alex even reached out to take the other hand too, fully facing him.
“Wait, don’t you need to-“
“I memorized it.” Alex said evenly, shrugging. “I’ve got it.” Despite her cool demeanor, her hands were trembling a little, just like his.
She took a breath, focusing both two-toned eyes completely on Magnus and doing her best not to think about how many people were staring directly at them. “Mags.” Her lips twitched into a smile, hands squeezing his. “Beantown. Maggie.” Their audience giggled. Alex dropped her shoulders a half inch, relaxing. “I can’t believe that we’re actually getting married. Honestly, you must be a saint.” She squeezed his hands again, her eyes flickering down to them instead of Mangnus’ stupid perfect sunny face. “I’m flawed and I’m well aware. I know I can be annoying and loud and too flashy…” she trailed off, still not meeting his eyes. He squeezed her hands back, drawing her attention. He was still smiling, but his brow was creased slightly, as if he was saying “what are you talking about, dummy?” He shook his head just slightly.
Alex felt a rush of warmth. Maybe it was a little bit of that weird Frey magic. Maybe it was just Magnus.
She met his eyes again, and all the tension went out of her. “But, in the end, you're my person. And I’m yours, too. And while I may be kinda mean sometimes, I do love you. So much.” She nodded, seeming satisfied with her speech. “So yeah, I do.”
Behind Magnus, Halfborn’s voice broke up the sniffling and “awe”s coming from the audience. “Is that it?”
Mallory bent down and pulled off her shoe, shooting it across the altar and beaning Halfborn in the head. Magnus didn’t even notice.
“Relax the smile, Maggie, your face is gonna get stuck.” Alex whispered, reaching up to pinch his cheek.
Magnus nodded, blinking back tears. His smile didn’t waver.
“If there are no other blessings to be offered, then I will call for the end of the ceremony.” Jack said, wiggling around behind the couple on the altar like he was looking for someone to stand up, then glancing up towards the sky. When no one moved and it didn’t seem like frey was going to descend from the clouds, he bobbed up and down a couple times, glowing a little brighter. “In that case, dudes and dudettes of the assembly, I am totally thrilled to pronounce these two souls bound for life. Or uh… until the end of the world. You may now- oh.”
Alex didn’t wait to be told. As soon as they were given permission, she took a fistful of that expensive suit and swung Magnus around, dipping him dramatically and pressing their lips together.
Magnus wasn’t sure if he was dizzy with excitement or because of how fast Alex had spun him around. He figured that was going to happen a lot from now on.

[Song accompaniment: Paper Rings/New Romantics by Taylor Swift]
The after-ceremony celebration was wild beyond expectations. Actually, it was a miracle upon miracles that no cops were called in for a noise complaint.
It had started off relatively reasonably, with a little bit of magical mead carried over from Valhalla and a few uninvited guests (not wedding crashers really, just friends of friends), and had quickly somersaulted into what was basically an out of control house party.
At first they were just playing music on the roof deck. People were dancing and hanging out, and there were a few volunteer valkyries running for food and drink from Valhalla (courtesy of a new catering service offered by Odin. They had gotten a discount for trying it out.) Of course there was catering from Fadlan’s Falafel as well, managed by Amir personally. Any time magnus came anywhere near him he was offering the new groom a plate of falafel. For once he wondered if he might be able to get sick of it. When some other Enherji had spotted the running Valkyries asked about where they were going, the attendance list of the wedding had started growing, and people had started looking for interesting things to do on the lower floors.
By midnight, from the roof deck to the front lawn, there was music, drinking, and all out revelry. Even those who had abstained from the alcohol seemed to be overtaken by the mood of the celebration. There was an impromptu karaoke room set up in the study, a bowling tournament using some of Randolph’s old statues occurring in the hallway on the second floor, and since the catered food didn’t seem to be satiating them anymore, people had started raiding the kitchen of the Chase space for some kind of cooking operation. When Magnus peeked into the kitchen, he saw a lot of things going into a blender that didn’t seem like they were meant to go together, followed by several large burly guys daring each other to chug a disgustingly thick concoction.
There were no weapons allowed, since many of the guests were Enherji and couldn’t be trusted to mix partying with violence and not end up dead over it, but there were still stick sword fights in the hallways branching out into all out Guerilla warfare. As Magnus moved from room to room defending his new wife, he noticed some of the Einherjar teaching the kids from the Chase Space how to fight, and noticed some of them were pretty good fighters.
That probably wasn’t a great sign for the future conflicts they were going to be dealing with, but whatever. Tonight was a good night. He was married. He didn’t Puke in Alex’s mouth or fall off the stage or embarrass himself, and he even got to look cool in front of the homeless kids, which was great for his ego.
And best of all, Alex was next to him all night. The two of them were practically glued together, and Magnus was over the moon about it. He barely needed a drink of mead to start feeling drunk and giddy. They went from room to room playing games, laughing, and generally causing a bit of chaos. At one point, the play-war happening separated into the living vs the Einherjar, and he and Percy had had a very impressive sword fight in the front yard. He’d been one horn of mead in at the time, and was pretty sure he shouldn’t have been able to beat him, but Percy had taken a somewhat dramatic dive into the river after a good strike, leaving Magnus standing stunned on the bank for a few seconds before everyone exploded in applause. Alex had given him an excited reward kiss and shouted something at Annabeth as she was towing her wet boyfriend out of the river.
Annabeth didn’t seem upset, and Magnus was pretty sure he’d seen her smiling the whole time as she’d given Percy a kiss of his own.
It had been a few years since he’d died, and even though he’d stopped counting, he was pretty sure he was over Valhalla’s legal drinking age, or at least that he had earned it saving the world once or twice. So, after his glorious victory, he’d had a couple more drinks, offered some fighting tips to his eager (and drunk) troops, then wandered off to find somewhere to hide with Alex.
The two of them were hiding for a few hours. No one ever figured out where, or what they had been doing, and they were extremely tight lipped, if very smiley about it, when they came back out to the party. They made a stop in the karaoke office for Magnus to do a frankly impressive performance of Taylor Switf’s ‘Lover’ to a flustered Alex sitting in a chair. He was still singing it when they headed out of the room.
Near the end of the night the two groups of hallway fighters had called for an orderly competition, and they’d settled on a tournament of sorts on the rooftop. The chairs had been pushed aside and a circle had been marked off in the center of the space. It seemed like they were playing a game of King of the Ring, taking turns pushing eachother out of the circle and cheering excitedly when someone won.
When Alex and Magnus had wandered up, the competitors had arranged a sort of throne for the two newlyweds to spectate the ongoing competition from. It was just a couple of chairs pushed together with the flower arrangements from the ceremony next to them and a bunch of pillows, but Magnus did kind of feel like a king every time they cheered and raised their glasses towards him.
Alex came half wobbling over after refilling a plate full of snacks. Tossing her plate down on her seat, she planted herself directly into her new Husband’s lap with a happy wiggle.
Huh. Husband. Weird.
“Make room, mags.” She pushed his arms and legs around a little until she was comfortably sitting sideways on his lap with her feet over the armrest, then reached over to pull the plate of food into her lap.
“Mags?” Magnus was grinning. He'd had something to drink since they came back out. It might have been spiked? He hadn’t asked. Everything seemed kind of warm and funny. He felt a little dizzy, but he wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol or the smell of whatever Perfume Alex had put on. Alex seemed in a similar state. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t using the mean nicknames. Happily, he wrapped his arms around her waist and squeezed.
“Hey, I’m eating!” She elbowed him, steadying her plate of cookies and chips. “Sit still or I’ll get a proper chair.”
“Okay.” He nodded like a dummy, then rested his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes. After a few minutes of shouting, a round of the competition finished, and the whole roof let out a cheer. Magnus smiled, squeezing Alex again.
“‘Mhappy.” He muttered, his voice quiet and next to her ear.
Alex paused, tilting her head towards him and raising a brow. “Better be.”
“Mhm.” He nodded a couple times, his chin bumping her shoulder. “Mmm.”
She offered him a piece of cookie, which he ate obediently. “Magnus.” Her voice was soft, a little slurred.
“Mmm?” He turned to look at her, meeting her eyes and trying to focus.
“I love you.”
The two of them sat there, staring at each other for a few moments. The air was warm, the sky lit up with stars. They were surrounded by a hundred happy people there to celebrate them. Still, the best moments of the day were ones like this. Ones where they felt completely alone, and understood each other completely without saying any words. Magnus’s big dummy smile spread across his lips, and for once, Alex’s drunk mind didn’t bother trying to hide her own in return.
“Yeah.” Magnus nodded. “I know.”

Hopefully the next few chapters won't take this long but I will refrain from jinxing myself again so🧍‍♀️Anyway enough blabbering, hope y'all enjoy this one ;w;
CREDIT To the MFIP Team: Thank you to @yosajaeofficial, @urlocalmj, misfortun3_ismyname (on TikTok), @chaoticspeedrun, @ramblehour and @goldanrabbit for being my lovely editors! MAN did they give this chapter a lot of polish-

I rushed around my room throwing shit on as fast as I could. Not fast enough apparently, since my phone’s vibrating like it’s gonna explode.
It’s late as hell right now, but Zane insisted on meeting up. Pretty randomly at, like, 11pm on a school night. I was initially planning to reject the idea or ghost with the excuse of sleeping, but it’s been a good while since I actually did hang out with him. I know insomnia’s gonna keep me up for a bit anyway, so why the hell not? We might even have fun! Just wish he’d stop flooding my notifs like I didn't already say I was actively getting ready.
I looked in the mirror, checking to see if I was presentable enough for the outside realm. My reflection’s the same as always; for better or worse. Still the same pink dress, same green skirt, same  boots. Can’t forget the gold earrings; the only emergency asset I held onto. I don’t know what I expected. I don’t have much to work with. Guess the gloves from Donnie are new, at least. But I’m still getting… bored? A change in appearance—even a small one—might be able to fill that hole for a while. Keep me distracted.
Maybe I could do something with my hair tonight? I still have Mi’s ribbon lying here somewhere.
I ignored Zane’s digital pestering and spent a few extra minutes shuffling through drawers and boxes, eventually finding her long, white ribbon—handmade from moth silk. She wore it all the time. I barely remember her hair being fully down unless she was sleeping or about to shower. Except for that one night, of course. The night she left and was never found again. She almost did take the ribbon with her. Had her hair done up in a bun and everything, even a little fancier than usual. But she took it off once she saw me behind her, barely reflected in the mirror. She crouched down, placed it in my tiny palms, and gave me her wonderfully warm smile. It’s the last thing she left me with. The last gift she could ever give me.
After that, the ribbon’s survived years of storage and then more years of… unconventional bullshit use. I know moth silk ain’t the weakest thing on Earth but I’ve deadass used this ribbon as a make-shift pulley system to sneak stuff into my room through the window before, some of which weighed more than me! Its got the endurance of a Nokia at this point.
I’ve barely used the ribbon for its intended purpose, though. I mean, how could I? I’m not my mom no matter how similar we look. Maybe this is a me-thing, but I always felt wearing the ribbon would be like replacing her with myself.
Although, I’m sure Mi would’ve loved it if I wore it.
Using the ribbon, I tied my hair into a ponytail and styled it as a loose bow, just to see how it would look. The white tails gently draped over my back down to my hips. I never quite realized how long the ribbon was before now. I don’t look as fancy or pretty as mom did, but it’s the best I’ve got. It… it doesn’t look bad, though, I think. It actually looks kinda nice! Maybe I’ll use it a bit more often.
My phone’s repeated buzzing snapped me out from my trance. “Alright, alright, shut up already.” I groaned. Zane’s growing impatient.
You: hey sorry I jsut finished getting ready
You: heading out the door now! :3
Fuck doors. Sneaking out became a whole lot easier ever since I did it from my window, but he doesn’t have to know that. I can already imagine him scolding me about the dangers of dropping down from high places, even with the fire escape there. He wouldn’t be wrong, per se, but at this point I’ve handled worse. Would probably send him into cardiac arrest if he knew what I’d actually been up to these few months.
I sprinted to the spot we agreed to meet up at. Zane was already there, leaning against the wall with his hands stuffed in his pockets like always.
“Salena! Hey!” He lit up like a star when he saw me, beckoning me over.
God, for a sour person, he has such a sweet smile. He’s usually so good at being intimidating and frightening. Yet the second he brings out his smile, all that built-up fear washes away like it was never there to begin with.
“I almost thought you wouldn’t come.”
“Well, I figured I could use some fresh air.” I tilted my head to the side, eyeing his fit. “You left your sweater at home?”
“Hm?” He followed my gaze to his pitch black tank top in place of the usual outfit. “Oh, right! Yeah, the weather’s too hot for a sweater tonight. Forgot I changed it, really.”
Now that I’m looking closer, his choker’s missing too. It probably didn’t match with the top. Seems like it got swapped with a black watch on his left wrist that complimented the look way more. Doesn’t matter what he pretends to be though, I know Zane pays very close attention to his appearance. He’s gotta maintain the rep of our grade’s “Pretty Boy” after all. When it comes to him, every little detail matters.
Wait a sec…
“What happened to your arm?”
I couldn’t see ‘till he turned towards me but his left arm had a deep bluish-purple bruise spread across it. It looked like it was from something long like a pipe or a bat. Either way, it was gnarly enough to worry me.
“Oh that. It’s nothing too bad.” He shrugged.
“You kiddin’ me? It looks awful! What happened?” I carefully grabbed his arm and took a closer look at the mark. I wish Leo was here, but thankfully I’ve picked up a little medic knowledge from him so I can at least tell if a bone is broken or not.
“Hey, don’t get your feathers all fluffed! I got a little hurt rough-housing with the guys, that’s all. You know how they are.”
“Rough-housing? Or a secret murder attempt?” I was only being half sarcastic. It wouldn’t be out of character for them.
“Don’t worry! It’s really sweet of you to care, but they’d never dare hurt me on purpose! Now, on another note…“ He paused for a moment, taking a proper look at me. For a little bit, I couldn’t tell why he smirked. “Looks like someone wanted to look cute tonight, ey? You wore your hair up.”
“Huh?” I touched my hair, forgetting I changed it earlier. “Oh, um, yeah! I-I did! I thought I’d give it a try. Does it… um, you know, look too bad or weird or?…”
“No! No, it… it looks really pretty.” Oh god, that’s a relief to hear! I was so paranoid it wouldn’t suit— “I gotta ask, though.”
I caught him inching closer. I tried creating space, but quickly realized I was up against the wall again. Should’ve been more careful about that. His hand reached out, bringing back all sorts of cringe-inducing memories. He didn’t technically pin me like last time, but he tucked my bangs back behind my ear. Feeling his fingers come into contact with my skin almost feels just as nauseating, though.
“How’d you know I had a thing for girls in ponytails?”
And fuck, he made it weird again.
“Z-Zane?”
“Yeah?…” WHY ISN’T HE GETTING THE HINT!? “You know, you always look so soft when you dress up. You just bloom.”
“…So! What are we doing tonight?”
His smile slightly dropped, likely upset I ruined whatever moment he was trying to have. Honestly, didn’t matter to me, as shitty as that sounds. I just wanted to change the topic so he’d step back a bit. We go through this every time; this stupid ass, awkward aura. I wish it would stop happening.
On the bright side, he did step back and redirect his focus to answering my question. On the not so bright side, his answer was a pathetic shrug.
“I don’t know.”
“Y-you… What do you mean you don’t know? I snuck out here in the middle of the night, you told me it’d be something special! You’ve gotta have something planned.”
“Honest, I don’t! I thought it was beautiful outside and it reminded me of you. Wanted to see where such a lovely night could take us. I think that’s special enough, don’t you?”
“W-Well, I mean—“
He chuckled “What’s wrong? You’re not backing out now, are you?”
I may have praised his smile earlier, but right now it’s making my eye twitch. I’m a little peeved knowing he brought me out here for shits and giggles when I could’ve at least been resting in bed, replenishing some of my energy. I know I don’t have the best sleeping habits, but that doesn’t mean I can’t get tired from the constant action going on! I don’t even know how long he’s gonna keep me hostage for! But… he’s also right that it’d be kinda shitty to bail now. Besides, I’m already out here so…
I guess all that’s left to do is suck it up and try to make the best of it.
“Well, do you wanna… go for a walk or something?”
“Sounds perfect to me! Come on, hold my hand, Dove.”
For someone who supposedly didn’t have a plan, he sure took an awful lot of charge during that walk. He suggested we go to Central Park and practically dragged me there despite my common sense screaming to never go to that hellspawn at night. Although, I can’t complain too much. The park’s definitely the best place to see the stars, and tonight had clear skies! He made sure to keep a tight grip on me in case we ran into any classic New York weirdos anyway, so I should probably be less tense. I guess I got used to the guaranteed safety of having literal ninjas around me, I forgot what it was like hanging out with a regular person.
On top of that, Zane seemed really happy! Happier than I’ve seen him in a while, actually. He was giddily pointing out any interesting greenery we saw and rambling random facts he knew about them.
Even later, when we went and dined inside a relatively fancy restaurant, all he could focus on was the different plants they chose as decor. He’s such a huge nature geek, but he’d never let anyone know. Zane’s the type of guy to get 100% on a biology test and shamefully shove it in his backpack to avoid being labeled as a nerd. Being a nerd myself, I think it’s pretty cool, so I never understood it. But either way, I’m glad he feels safe around me. I’m glad he doesn’t hide around me.
I forgot about this side of him, I really did. The side that is my friend.
We were walking back to my place, taking in the bliss of the quiet night. Even if a part of me prefers the busier, noisy parts of the city, it’s really soothing to experience the calmer sides of it too. Everything about tonight feels nearly perfect. I’m surprised nothing ruined it. I’m debating if I could ruin it…
I really want to talk to him. I wanna bring up those photos, get some answers, put my strange emotions to rest once and for all. I wanna hear it from him that neither of them meant to hurt me. That this was just my mind screwing me over again. I need to know. I really need to know.
You know, friends are supposed to lend a shoulder when you need it.
I don’t want to ruin the night. But friendship takes risks sometimes. That’s what shows its strength, right?
I take a deep breath and go for the leap of faith.
“So, I was wondering—” “Salena, I wanted to ask—”
I really gotta work on my timing for these things.
“S-Sorry! You go first.”
He shook his head with a delicate smile. “Nah, it’s okay. You can go.”
“Are you sure? I-I mean it’s kinda complicated…”
“Yeah, I’m sure! I always love hearing you talk, anyway.”
“O-okay then, well…” My hands balled up into determined fists and I looked him right in the eyes. I have to put an end to this or I’ll never be able to move on. “I’ll be real, it might be a weird question. But you’re my friend and I really trust you a lot. I… I have to know this, so please don’t get mad.”
“Yeah…?” Why did he have to lean in closer…
I came this far, I’m not letting my tongue shut me up again.
“What’s going on with you and Jaiden?”
Immediately his demeanor changed. His posture slouched, the disappointment clear as day on his face. “Jaiden? You’re—you’re really thinking about… about them, now?”
“Yes, b-but I want to stop! That’s why I need to ask you this, so please bear with me, Zane.”
He leaned back with a hand on his hip, the other covering his face as he exhaled. “And here I was getting my hopes up for nothing.”
He would never think that I heard him; Zane’s a good whisperer. Unfortunately, my hearing rivals it.
He looked at me again; his eyes didn’t feel the same. “Okay, fine. What is it?”
I felt my stomach twist into itself. My chest began to ache. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think I was about to hurl.
It’s okay. Friends get a little upset at each other all the time. Doesn’t mean they’ll break apart. Don’t be a coward, Salena.
I told him about everything. The canceled plans, Jaiden’s distant behavior, the increase in their pics together on his Instagram. I vented about how frustrated I felt with seeing them spend so much time together and then completely ignore me. And then vented some more about how frustrated I felt from that frustration, how I knew it was wrong yet couldn’t help it seeping into my everyday life! I let out a lot of steam tonight, even things I didn’t plan on telling him. The only things I left out, honestly, were anything related to the turtles to hide their identity. And to avoid any irrelevant questions.
He seemed strangely chipper hearing all of this, a curiously amused smirk plastered on his face. Not the reaction I expected, but I guess it’s better than him flipping out like I thought he would.
“So, if I’m getting this right, you see me and Jaiden hanging out more often and it actually bothers you?”
“I don’t want it to but yeah, it bothers me a whole fucking lot. It’s taken over my life and I hate it! I hate being jealous! It’s so—“
“You’re jealous!? You’re jealous! Oh man, I can’t believe I am living in the same timeline where the Salena Moni is experiencing jealousy like every. Average. Lowlife. Person!”
“Yeah, yeah, go ahead and rub it in, why dontcha? That helps me so much.” I pouted.
He laughed, enjoying my misery. “I know, I’m sorry. Just, damn! Somewhere, pigs are flying aren’t they?” If Meat Sweats could fly, I’d be his murderous Cupid.
“Har har. I get it though. I mean, you know me! I’ve felt envious before, but jealous? How does anyone even deal with this…?” I held myself a little tighter.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay, Dove. It happens! Everyone gets a little jealous. It’s a normal thing to go through, Salena.”
“Yeah, I sure did want a normal life, so I guess I got what I wished for.” I can’t help feeling salty over all this.
He only laughed and patted my hair, fluffing up the ponytail a little.
“Hey, Zane? For the sake of my psyche, you sure I’m not a bad person for this?”
A tender sigh rang through my ears. “I’m sure. You could never be a bad person, Salena.”
…I never realized a husky voice like his could feel so honeyed.
But he’s right. I’m not a bad person, I’m just human. If both him and Raph said the same thing, it’s more likely to be true.
“And for the record, Jaiden and I are just friends right now. There’s nothing going on between us, so you don’t have to worry.”
“Uh… Cool? I… might be a little lost here. Why are you telling me that?”
“Reassurance, obviously.”
I blinked, not really getting it or knowing how to respond. He thought for a moment, then had a face of realization while he giggled.
“Oh my god, don’t tell me you’re actually that innocent! You’re so cute, I swear!” He booped my nose and leaned in again with a huge smile. He lowered his voice almost to a whisper. “You’re jealous because you have a crush.”
A crush?
“But why would I have a crush on Jaiden?”
“I’m just saying—Wait, rewind. A crush on Jaiden?” He physically paused for a bit before awkwardly laughing. “No, sweetie, you don’t get jealous of your crush, you get jealous of the people they’re with!”
“That’s why I’m asking. Why would I have a crush on Jaiden?”
…Why does the air feel colder all of a sudden?
The night was warm just a minute ago, but now it’s dead like the core of winter. His smile is long gone. His eyes, they’re slicing me in half. Is my breathing a little faster? He’s coming closer. I’m suddenly aware of just how alone we really are here in this silent little street.
“To be clear. Who are you jealous of.”
My throat clogged up. I blinked and lowered my eyes so he wouldn’t see the tears being fought back. I forgot this side of him, too. The side that made my heart close in on itself.
“Salena, don’t make me ask twice.”
“Of you.” I managed to let out. “J-jealous of you.”
He wouldn’t speak for a while. Only felt him staring me down like a predator stalking its prey, making me swallow to keep my throat from drying up. My hands felt so clammy, begging me to wipe them on my skirt. But I didn’t dare move. I couldn’t even look at him right now.
“Of fucking course you are.”
I knew it was coming, but I still flinched when he cursed with no shame, tugging his hair and punching the wall next to me. It’s stupid, isn’t it? I can handle giant mutants and a literal cult of evil, but Zane’s temper was not something to be messed with, and my unlucky ass did exactly that.
“Why did I ever expect anything different! Of course it’s me you’re jealous of! Why the fuck would you phrase it like that if you meant something else, god dammit!”
You’re gonna bleed if you keep doing that…
“Z-Zane, I’m sorry. I-I didn’t think it’d come off as me being jealous of Jaiden—“
“OBVIOUSLY, IT FUCKING WOULD!!!” He grabbed my shoulders, bringing me closer to him. I don’t know if it’d be an exaggeration to say I nearly got a panic attack from the action alone.
“When you say things like how you’re jealous of how much time Jaiden and I spend together, of course I think you’re jealous of them, not me! Why would I ever assume it was me! That never happens with anyone else! God, you’re such a fucking moron sometimes, I swear!”
“I'm sorry… P-please stop…”
“After everything we’ve fucking been through, everything I did for you! All you can ever do is somehow relate me back to Jaiden! There’s always someone else! I mean nothing to you, Salena! Don’t I!? I! Mean! Nothing!”
“I-I didn’t mean to, I promise—”
“THAT DOESN’T MATTER, IDIOT!”
He let go and pushed me back. Sometimes I overlook how much bigger Zane is compared to me. This is not one of those times.
“You know what? You know what’s funny, Salena? That night you’re so fucking fixated on, the one that’s consumed your ability to even think like a normal person? Yeah, I’ve got some news about that night.”
I just want to disappear…
“I asked Jaiden to go with me to that shitty party on purpose!”
What?
“I asked them on purpose, I posted those pictures on purpose! I did everything ‘cause I knew you’d see it! I thought maybe then, for once, you’d finally, finally feel a single ounce of longing for me! That was all I wanted!”
What.
“…You better be lying, Zane.”
“I’m not. And you deserve this.”
I glared at him the entire time while he was too focused on his own bullshit words to even notice. My arms burned with the sensation of my nails digging deeper and deeper. I hope they'll draw blood.
“You don’t understand, Salena! You keep saying all these… all these stupid fucking things that no one else says to me! Do you know what it does to me? If I had my way, I’d hold you forever and never let you go. No one’s shown me kindness like you.”  I was so numb I couldn’t even react to him caressing my cheek. Only kept glaring.
“But then you barely ever give me the time of day! You’re barely ever with me! Fuck, honestly, you’re never with me anymore! I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s not like you to say one thing and do another! You’re not that type of two-faced asshole! So why are you fucking acting like one!? Ever since that day you went to ‘hang out’ with that stupid drugged-out bitch you called a friend, you’ve never been the fucking same! With the way you act, I wouldn’t be fucking surprised if you got addicted and stay on the high 24/7!”
He’s… Is he talking about Mikey? That’s what this is about? Is he fucking serious right now.
“Who are you!? Where is my Salena?”
“Did you know Jaiden and I had plans that day?”
“No, I didn’t. I’m not stupid, I wasn’t gonna go that far. I wanted you to get a taste of what it felt to not be chosen, that’s it! Obviously, it was dumb to think it would work!” The dumb bitch sighed, exasperated. As if he had any right to be. “Seems you don’t have room for me in that big heart of yours after all, huh? Maybe I’m a dick for saying this, but it’s honestly karma that I happened to choose the one day you two were gonna hang out. That’s gotta be a sign, Salena.”
You never get the fucking hint, do you Zane Evans?
“I need to go.”
I couldn’t even get two steps in before he gripped my wrist to stop me.
“Wait, what do you mean go? Go where?”
“I meant exactly what I said! I’ve had enough. Now let go of me.”
I yanked my arm back and stormed off, Zane following close behind. At least, judging from the sound he was. I didn’t bother looking back.
“Hey! Your place is in the opposite direction!”
“Stop following me, I can go wherever I want!”
“Salena, seriously!? It’s already late, you’re gonna get lost! Come on, are you really that pissed off—”
“YES!!!”
I turned my heel and faced him.
“How are you even unsure of that!? You got upset I hung out with someone else for one day—a person I made plans with in advance, might I add—and you decided to take revenge on me!? Do you have any clue how fucked up that is!?”
“I got a little mad! So what? You’ve known me for two years! Stop overreacting about a harmless dig!”
“Harmless!? You have no idea what I’ve gone through this past month because of your little ‘harmless’ stunt! I’ve suffered so much because of you! I can’t even sleep because of you! God, sometimes you’re so—Ugh!”
I began counting down from ten to one, just like Raph taught. I shouldn’t say something I’ll regret later. Honestly, I shouldn’t have said anything at all.
He looked like a sad puppy. It’s clear he wasn’t expecting this. But somehow, my sympathy won’t halt my anger tonight.
“Salena, I… Look, I didn’t know you’d be so sensitive over this—“
“Zane, I really need to leave. I’m sorry I exploded like that, but it’s gonna happen again if I stay here any longer. So please, just stop following me. Hurting you would add more shit to my plate and I really don’t need that right now, okay?”
“N-no! Stay! I can make it up to you!”
“Another day, any day, but not now! Not now.”
I walked away and this time he didn’t follow.
“…Fine.”
I heard his footsteps stomp in the other direction, slowly fading away.
My own legs went faster till the wind consumed me.
The anger returned almost instantly after I knew he left. I’m happy I kept my cool during the end back there but holy fucking shit! What was he thinking!? I wanted answers tonight but I didn’t expect this! I thought I was overthinking again! I thought my brain made up the possibility that they ditched me intentionally! But no, turns out it wasn’t just Jaiden but Zane, too! What the fuck did I do to them? What did he mean I “deserved it”!?
I don’t get it, what is he expecting me to do? I know he… feels a certain way about me. But even then! I can’t just shit romantic feelings for him out my ass!
Ugh, so fucking stupid. I’m gonna lose my head if I keep thinking about this.
I wandered around the city some more and got back to the main road where a good handful of cars were passing again. It’s past 1am now and I’ve gotta get ready for school in less than five hours. But I know damn well I won’t sleep, not after this. I don’t wanna go home. Take me anywhere but home. I don’t feel like facing any of this right now, I…
I want somewhere I can feel safe for a while, just so the day won’t end on such a horrible note.
I pulled out my phone and opened the contacts. I wish I was one of those folks who didn’t have to think of someone before they dialed but alas, here I am.
I can’t talk to Jaiden.
I obviously can’t talk to Zane.
I don’t know if I can tell Casey any of this yet.
I’d love to talk to April but she’s probably asleep by now. But… but the guys might not be! They’re usually up at these sort of freakish hours of the night. I could try giving the group chat a call and hope for the best. I feel bad for bothering them so often but who else do I have right now?
It took three rings before the line went through.
“You are conversing with Donatell—Why is your screen so dark?”
Oh fucking lovely.
“H-hey, Donnie. Sorry, I didn’t realize it was a video call.”
As my luck would have it, Donnie was the one to pick up. No offense to him; he never did anything wrong. I’m just not entirely sure how he feels about me yet. So, having him answer when I’m already high on nerves isn’t what I pictured hoping for the best would result in. But he’s much, much better than being alone right now.
“Uh, what… Whatcha up to?”
“Oh, simply being my usual genius self to aid with our nightly hero duties! Sure, no regular teenager could detect a break-in on sensitive confidential info before the actual government could, but I, Othello Von Ryan, have proven to be no regular teen!”
“Yep, definitely the usual for you.”
Donnie’s def no less than Leo when it comes to being allergic to humility. Though, they both earned their egos. Donnie’s not wrong; not just any person could be nearly as smart as him.
“So, did you need anything fixed? You’re calling at a rather unusual hour for a school night.”
“Oh, no, not really. I mean, I was kinda out with a friend, but things… ended abruptly. I don’t really feel like sleeping right now. I wanted some company?”
He opened his mouth to respond but got interrupted by a familiar accent asking who was on the phone. The instant my name left his voice, three others repeated it with joy. My screen suddenly overflowed with four green goofballs all trying to fit in the camera’s scope at once.
“SALENA! How are you? How come you’re not asleep? Don’t you have school tomorrow?”
“Mikey, it’s Salena, it’s way too early for them to sleep.”
“Wow, Leo, anyone ever tell you how funny you are?” My words didn’t match my tone. I wonder why.
“Leo, let ‘er breathe!” The camera shook as a red bandana came into frame. “Hey, but for real. Why you up so late, Salena? Somethin’ up?”
“Nah, just couldn’t sleep! I thought I’d call you guys for a bit, but from the sounds of it, y’all seem kinda busy.”
The camera moved again as the device got transferred to the next turtle. “Give me my—Ugh, there we go. And yes, you’re correct. We are actually busy with a mission tonight.”
I tried keeping my smile intact as I understandingly nodded my head. Is he mad at me for assuming they were free the exact moment I needed them to be? I mean, I’d be mad at me, so it’d make sense.
“Hey, but you know what?” Leo leaned next to Donnie, trying to see the screen. “You should totally join us! Tag along, have some fun, we’d all love that!”
You would?
“What? Nardo, what are you—“
“OMIGOSH, YEAH!” Mikey jumped in, knocking Donnie out of frame entirely. “If you’re not gonna sleep, we should totally hang out! I really miss you, Salena!”
“Uh, am I really the only one thinking it would be a bad idea to let the person who barely leaves their house join us on a mission to a highly-secured and regulated government facility?”
“Chillax, Don, she’ll be fine! You’ll be fine, right Salena?”
“I mean, uh—”
“See? What’d I tell ya, totally fine!”
“Raph agrees! Salena can handle herself.”
“Oh sure, I’m absolutely positive nothing could go wrong! He said without a trace of doubt.”
…I can’t tell if he’s trying to protect me or just doesn’t want me there. Neither option feels good right now, to be honest.
“C’mon, Dee, we’ve all seen her fight before! Including you, remember? When they helped us stop Meat Sweats?”
Mikey’s got a point. That was before I had any real battle experience, too! I don’t know why Donnie seems so hesitant about this. Or why it’s making me so pissy, actually.
Another car passed by and I lowered the volume a bit, remembering the time. Now that I’m actually near some apartments, I don’t wanna accidentally wake someone up. I really gotta save up for some new earbuds; my last ones broke like, a month ago and I can only make do for so long.
“Three to one, hermano. You’re outnumbered.”
“But—Sigh, forget it! Salena, I—“
“‘NOUGH SMALL TALK!” At this point, they’re just playing hot potato with Donnie’s phone. “Salena, hurry up! We’re boutta start the mission so don’t want ya missin’ out!”
“Ha! Almost made a pun!”
“Shut up, Leo. Anyways, we’re at uh… Uh… Hey, Donnie, where we at?”
I could hear him struggling for his phone in the distance. “You could just send our coordinates!”
“I could send her our coordinates! …How does Raph do that, again?”
The audio muffled as the phone shuffled back to its rightful owner. “God, I’m so gonna install security on this thing. Anyway, I’m sending our location to you right now. And as I was GOING TO SAY BEFORE! Salena, I look forward to seeing you again.”
He flashed a smile and part of my worries vanished. I’m still not sure how to read him but if he’s being nice, it can’t be all bad, right?
“OH, AND IF YA CAN, COULD YOU BRING ME A SNACK—“ Donnie hung up before the teddy bear could finish.
Luckily for him, his face beamed when I finally arrived around twenty minutes later and did, in fact, bring him a snack.
“Hey guys! Hope I didn’t take—“
I couldn’t even finish speaking before finding myself laughing on the floor with four giant turtles hounding me in hugs.
“It has been way too long since we’ve hugged!” Poor Mikey, I haven’t been able to see him in a hot minute. “Nice ponytail, by the way. Really makes your eyes pop.”
“Aww, thanks! I missed you guys too. Ugh, I really wish scheduling was easier! I’d hang out more often.”
“Dude, why waste time on schedules when you could just come over?”
“‘Xactly! Ain’t like you’re not welcome!”
“Oh. I-I mean, sure! If you guys really don’t have a problem with it…” I wonder if this is what it’s like to feel wanted.
“I just wanted you to get a taste of what it felt to not be chosen!”
…T-then again, they’re probably just being polite.
Click!
“And fits perfectly, just as the estimations foretold!” The fuck?
I looked down and saw a shiny black belt matching the arm wraps now resting above my hips. It’s actually fairly loose around my waist but I’m guessing that was the intention. There’s a giant pink button on the left with the same M-shaped logo as all of theirs. It looked super cool, honestly! Even seemed to match with my outfit!
“Woaaah, what is this thing?”
“Donnie. Really?” Leo didn’t sound impressed and neither did the others but, like, who cares! The belt’s dope as hell!
He ignored them and continued addressing me. “It basically functions both as your very own panic button and is a carrier for your sickles thanks to a highly specific magnetic attraction! Plus, it obviously helps tie in your outfit better ‘cause Great Galileo did you need some accessories.”
“Damn, I didn’t know my sickles were magnetic!”
“Oh, they weren’t before, I installed magnets in them last night.” With that, he pulled my fucking weapons seemingly out of his ass. Judging by everyone else’s groans though, I’m the only one who’s surprised and confused.
“Donald! What did we say about breaking into strangers’ homes!”
“Hey, I didn’t break in!… to a stranger’s home! I broke into Salena’s, Salena is not a stranger—OW, HEY!” Raph slapped the back of his head. One quick yet dramatic recovery later, we all began our route of sneaking into the building.
Security wasn’t monitoring the higher floors, so we only had to ninja our way up ‘till there and the rest was easy peasy. I tried focusing on the quick briefing I was receiving on the way up but my mind was admittedly elsewhere. Back to the weird situation I thought I dreamt up last night.
I don’t remember much. I was too tired to really register anything, and Donnie being a ninja probably enhanced that. But I do remember still hearing faint footsteps in my room; drawers being opened, the closet getting browsed. I was so out of it I figured I probably hallucinated everything. Either way, I was way too paralyzed to do anything; I couldn’t even put my phone back earlier. Kept passing in and out of consciousness. But it seemed like someone put it back for me. They helped my sloppy body into a position that wouldn’t leave me aching the next morning and pulled the covers up to tuck me in. What really sealed the whole dream theory to me was the metallic-textured “hand” that patted my head before they left and let the world return to tranquility.
I seriously did figure it was all a weird fever dream or some shit. Personally, I still feel like that’s more believable than it being Donnie all along. But staring down at my sickles, I guess I can’t really argue against the proof right in front of me.
“Gentlemen, here we are! The Techno Cosmic Research Institute! Otherwise known as”—the door opened as I returned back to present time—“The TCRI.”
The moon illuminated the flat, revealing that we were in a main lobby of some sorts. Huge and spacious, decorated with different plants I’m sure Zane would’ve gone crazy over.
…I shouldn’t think about him right now.
It was a huge and spacious lobby full of plants. The windows that were tinted from the outside now presented a full view of the city skyline. Doors were carved into the walls, transitioning to the other rooms. Some, like the several meeting rooms, were made with glass so I could vaguely make out the interior from here. Others were blocked by heavy, solid, metal doors, holding whatever secrets the government had behind them.
I felt strange setting foot in this place, like I wasn’t supposed to be here. Well, I guess we are breaking and entering, but it’s not that. It’s something else, something I can’t quite explain. Unrelated to the guys but personal to me. I feel I’m not wanted for a reason I’m not yet aware of. It’s freaking me out a little.
“So, what do the Purple Dragons want with this place again?”
“Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. I only caught a break-in to the system in general and tracked it back to Kendra, I don’t have info on what they’re trying to gain access to. Whatever it is, though, it has an impressively tight security system that’s nearly impossible to break! At least, not through their simple B-tier remote hacking.”
“If the Purple Dragons want it, then it’s gotta be something major.” I’ve known about them for a while thanks to April.
It kinda shocked me at first, not because a group of teens created a tech-smart gang but because April O’Neil was a loser to someone. Call me a little biased—and you’d be right—but I still think Kendra’s got rocks for brains if she ignores someone like April.
But that’s a mental essay for another day. Right now, Leo’s smirking. And if Leo’s smirking, things will either go amazingly well or horrifically wrong.
“So… If we’re already here, why don’t we just figure out what they want ourselves?”
Mikey propped his chin up on Leo’s shoulder. “You mean like, go and explore? Sounds rad to me!”
“Yeah! Sneak around, let Donnie do his nerdy smart people stuff and see what’s so great about this place, yeah?”
“Invade the privacy of our nation’s government and scavenge for confidential data!? Nardo, I love you!”
“Raph? Your call, buddy.”
He was shockingly quick to shrug. “Sure! Raph don’t see a problem with it. Sounds hella fun to me!”
“Uh, guys?” I raised my hand. “Isn’t this, like, highly illegal?”
“And?” They all said in unison. To be fair, legal doesn’t sound like them anyway.
“What are they gonna do? Arrest us?” His hand circled in front of his blue bandana.
“And don’t worry, you won’t get in trouble for anything that happens! Donnie can get rid of the evidence and no one will know you were here, right Dee?” Mikey shot a wink at Donnie.
“Affirmative!”
Dang, Mikey’s made a lot of good points tonight.
“Eh, you’re right. To hell with laws!” Passing up an opportunity to explore a space institution would be laughably unlike me, anyway!
We decided to split up and meet back at the main lobby in fifteen, assuming the Purple Dragons hadn't arrived by then. It’s kind of scary wandering on my own in this place. It still feels off to me, but at the same time, I’ve always wanted so desperately to walk through a facility like this. Fascinating space research, meeting after meeting to discuss whatever new breakthrough was made, access to a shit ton of databases and technologies I’ll never have the chance to use at home!? Everything about this place is perfect! It’s all I dreamed it to be.
So why won’t that damn feeling go away?
Whatever, it’s probably just tonight in general. I really, really, need to get over it and move on already or else I’m guaranteed to fuck up the whole mission.
I sighed and glanced down at my arm wraps, raising them to get a better look. Despite my flip-floppy mood, I couldn’t help but smile. It’s dorky but they do comfort me every now and then. They felt nice to wear and even looking at them made me all fuzzy and nostalgic. They feel like an older me even though I got them recently.
“I take it you liked them, then.”
His voice startled me, I thought everyone went their own ways but I guess Donnie was nearby.
“Yeah, I do! The belt, too, they’re really cool gifts! Thank you.” He lit up when he heard those magic words. Man, I can’t believe I forgot to thank him sooner. Poor guy was probably aching for some feedback.
“I-I actually always wondered how you made them. They feel really sturdy but like, it’s not heavy to wear, either, if that makes sense.”
“Oh yeah, totally!” He typed on the screen on his arm, booting up the scanning feature to make sure we didn’t miss anything. “It’s an intentional design choice. They are supposed to act as armor, so.”
“Woah, cool! Do they count as tactical gear? As in military grade and all that jazz?”
“What? No, that’s not even good quality, that’s just a buzzword. Military grade simply means they met the minimum stated requirements at the lowest unit price.”
“…”
“…Low budget, few money, lead to mid product, good enough for gullible minds and general public consumption.”
Ohhhh. “So they lied.”
“As per usual. It’s shit engineering in actuality.”
I pushed open one of the meeting rooms’ glass doors as Donnie’s shell held up a bright torch. We began scouting the area for anything interesting while continuing our talk. All this investigative work’s reminding me of April and the way she’d gush about doing the same. Completely understanding the appeal now; it feels so thrilling snooping around somewhere you’re not supposed to be! Especially when the law’s involved.
The room wasn’t anything unordinary. It looked like any other corporate meeting room. The long table leading to the small TV on the wall, decorative paintings and plants, the usual. Man, we probably should’ve gone into a more interesting—“OW!”
“…Watch your step.” He said after I already fell to my knees.
“Thanks for the very useful warning. What even was that?”
He shined the light closer to a… metal? No, definitely not entirely metal. A robot arm sloppily plopped on the floor. We couldn’t see what the arm was attached to, if it was attached to anything at all. It’s too long to trace back with the torch light from where we are. One thing’s for sure, though: It’s giant. The claw I tripped over is practically the same size as my head.
“Hmm…” He crouched closer to the arm, slowly inspecting it. “Weird. It looks like it’s made of some cheap plastic. Perhaps a prototype of some sorts.”
“I don’t think they’d make it this big if it was a prototype.” Maybe we could do a test to see what type of plastic it is. “You got any fire?”
“While I see your angle and would love to carry through that experiment, it’s probably not wise to burn something we don’t know the purpose of. Or, you know, alert the security of our presence from the alarms.”
“Yeah, fair…” Man, would’ve been hella fun, though.
We both stayed on the floor, a little stumped on what the hell this thing was. My eyes got bored after a while and wandered around the room again. The only interesting thing in here was this weird ass plastic arm, it’s pretty much useless looking around the room but it did keep me entertained. There were five plants in this room which explains the fresh smell, all of them were basic enough for me to recognize. Two zebra plants, a ponytail palm, and…
I ignored the plant on the table when I spotted something thin underneath it, hidden by the shadows. I think it’s a slip of paper?
Donnie’s sigh brought my attention back. “You know what, I’m gonna go to their computer lab to see if one of their databases has anything about this thing.”
“Aight, I’ll stay back and keep exploring. Good luck!”
Right as he left, I sped over to the mysterious paper, unable to contain my curiosity any longer. The table was tall enough for me to comfortably sit under, leaning over the paper on the floor to read it. It’s, coincidentally enough, about that puzzling arm. The incomplete text made it clear it was probably part of a stack of paper or a file and fell out. Sadly, it didn’t reveal much but what I could get out of it was that it’s an automated arm controlled by an AI system, mostly covered with polypropylene plastic. Heh, PP plastic. Oh, it was created for the purpose of security. Well that’s just fantastic. I should go warn the boys about it.
I quickly snapped a pic of the loose sheet, almost getting out from under the table.
…But I’m glad as hell I didn’t.
I heard it. A soft, mechanical hum as something slithered off the ground. I grabbed my sickles from their belt, trying to minimize my shaking. It took a few blinks and tries but I managed to turn invisible, watching the machine move through the darkness. How was it suddenly on?
Its movements were smooth and natural. Too natural for something meant to be robotic. It’s so eerily graceful, slithering through the air. The arm swiveled its claw around like an animal head checking its surroundings. It… It’s looking where I am. It’s looking at me. It shouldn’t be able to see me, I’m not supposed to be visible! But it won’t stop staring.
”FUCK!” I shrieked when it lunged at me, quickly slicing it before it could grab me. Thank god it’s just plastic… Why the fuck is it hollow?
That doesn’t make any sense! Shouldn’t there be wiring or something? Even if not to connect the AI, how the hell can it move like that without anything to mimic muscle!?
I gasped, turning my head to the side. I can hear something else. It’s gooey and mushy and…
It’s looping around the room.
It’s getting louder.
”W-what the hell?”
…I think I can see it now. Something solid but stretchy, resembling thick vines climbing up the plastic arm. I backed up, watching as it crawled over to the newly severed claw. It pulled the claw back to its other half and tightened around them. It glowed? A sickeningly blinding green color. Before I realized what was going on, the claw suddenly reattached as the vines slinked back into the darkness.
It saw me again and the chase resumed.
It’s so damn fast, I can barely outrun it! Dodging is saving my ass but it keeps knocking over any furniture I used against it!
I jumped when I heard Donnie from the comms. Wait, he installed comms on my arm wraps? Damn, I'm so frazzled, I forgot about those.
“What’s making all that racket? Everything okay over there?”
”You can hear that!?”
”Yeah, I’m literally right next door?”
”Well—SHIT!” Too fucking close, too fucking close! It almost fucking grabbed me! Fuck, my knees hurt from that! “SON OF A—Don’t worry, I can handle it! I’ll explain soon!”
I tried getting off the floor as quickly as possible but the claw pulled me back down. The four sharp grippers opened up like a mouth and a fucking chainsaw came out. It went straight for my head, life flashing before my eyes as my sickles blocked it by pure reflex, holding it back. It won’t back off! I can’t keep pushing forever! How the hell do I get out of this!?
“FIBONACCI!”
A spinning titanium blur whacked the arm back, grabbing its attention to the maniacally smiling turtle now dashing through the room. His arm reached out, grabbing his staff from mid-air, and chopped off the robot arm with a giant drill. I curled in on myself right before a bright, violet shield spread over me and kept the arm’s falling metal parts from landing on me.
“You know, that did not seem like ‘handling it’.”
My vision cleared to his hand offering to help me up. I’m suddenly getting deja vu from the other countless times my helpless damsel-wannabe ass needed a rescue. Panicked and guilt-ridden, I waved it off and got up on my own.
“We gotta get outta here right now!”
“What? Why? I already—”
The vines returned and began repeating their process of fixing the arm. Though this time, it seems to be going faster.
“Oh my banana pancakes! What is that!?”
“I don’t know but that’s why we’re leaving! Come on!”
I grabbed his hand and we ran out the room, running into the others in the main lobby.
”Leo! There’s—”
“Crazy killer robot arms, we know. Was just in the middle of talking about that, actually.” He gave a glance of disapproval to the pouting red giant next to Mikey. Who also looks hella annoyed. It would appear we’ve walked in on a teensy squabble.
I heard Donnie sigh beside me “Raph, please tell me you didn’t.” He left my clueless ass standing there to join in on their talk.
Wait—Oh god, not again!
Turning around, I grabbed my sickles. I heard it again. Managed to dodge just in time for its jab to my right. It seems the guys are too busy to notice and I really don’t wanna burden them again. I’ll solo this one!
“When I said we should go explore, I didn’t mean go ‘round pushing things! We’re in a government building, why would you touch anything!?”
I heard another hit coming and blocked it with the blade.
Yeah, I-I can totally take this! I should let them finish their conversation—Holy fuck, there’s more than one, fucking end my suffering already.
”I didn’t mean to! You guys know I got a weak spot, what was I supposed to do? If they didn’t want Raph to push the big, red button, maybe they shouldn’t make it big ‘n red!”
“Buddy, that’s not how that works and you know that.”
There’s three of them now and they’re so unreasonably fast! It’s so hard to keep up! Ugh, it almost feels like I am being punished after all.
My accidental yelp luckily got drowned by Mikey’s groan. “Man, just let it go! We can smell your ‘I know I fucked up but don’t wanna admit it ‘cause I’m the big brother’ stench!”
”THAT’S A DIFFERENT STENCH!”
”AHH!”
I really didn’t mean to blurt that out but the claw dug into my leg and yanked me off the ground! Guilt aside, it’s probably a good thing I caught their attention, especially since I dropped my sickles like a fucking moron!
“SALENA!” His sword slashed through the air but got promptly blocked and thrown back by another metal claw. A scary amount of them are showing up now! The guys are completely surrounded and I’m stuck useless, dangling in the air!
One of the arms came closer and opened its grippers, a scanner popping out this time, its red beam blinding my eyes. My breathing grew shallow, the commotion from below fading away. I’m getting lightheaded from being suspended upside down. I need to get out of this situation. But there’s nothing I can do. Just squint past the light and anxiously wait for its next move.
My ears burned from the claw’s monstrous shriek. It sounds like a fucking animalistic version of nails on a chalkboard! Why did it react to me like this? Why me? Aren’t we all intruders? Why is it just me!?
“You deserve this.”
Was he right?
I didn’t process getting swung in the air until I was let go with enough momentum to cause a crash through the decor. My arms shook as I tried lifting my body up. Everything hurts, everything fucking hurts! My ears, my arms, my legs! My head! I just wanted a little distraction tonight! Why is this happening?
Is this really my karma?
…Wait a sec.
When I managed to lift my head, I came face to face with a crack in the wall where the robot arms were emerging from. The vines I saw earlier turned out to be permanently merged with the arms at the roots and lead to… something behind the wall. The crack was too small to properly make much out but it looked like it was breathing?
Whatever, I don’t have time to be surprised. “Guys! The arms! They’re coming from over here!”
The crack’s small but just big enough for something slim! Like—
The claw dug into my leg once again and began dragging me away. “Leo! Donnie! One of your weapons can fit through!”
“Got it!”
“I’ll cover!”
Flashes of blue scattered around the lobby. Each portal and throw of his sword brought Leo closer and closer to the wall. I couldn’t watch for too long, though, as I found myself back in the air again. It froze my skin getting thrown across the room faster than before. This time, towards the glass windows.
Chains grabbed at my ankle and yanked me back to the ground away from my disastrous fate. I looked up to see the tangerine flashing a confident yet relieved smile at me. “Hey!”
“…Hey!”
Mystic metal clinked as Mikey pulled back some of the robot arms chasing after Leo to buy him more time. Raph and Donnie quickly shifted gears and guarded me to make sure the plastic freaks couldn’t grab me again. Mikey continued to aid Leo, bouncing all over the room, keeping the arms distracted with his flow and somehow, still bringing them back to where he originally stood: Away from Leo.
Finally, a sword was heard stabbing through the air and splashing through a soft, squishy substance. The arms dropped to the floor as the thing in the wall hissed in pain, slowly leading to the dreadfully awaited silence at last.
Mikey reached his hand out for me and pulled me up. “You good?”
“Not dead, yeah.”
“Guess that’s a start.”
I glanced to the side at Donnie staring blankly at me, confused until he walked over and held one of my arms to examine my wrap.
“Hmm, I wonder if there’s some modification I can do to your gloves that prevents your sickles from getting so easily lost.” I guess that’s why he was staring a minute ago.
“Honestly, that’d be great. I keep losing them, so…”
“Yeah, I was thinking—“
“Nerd-talk later! Do a med scan!” Leo shoved him out the way and accidentally knocked Mikey back. Didn’t seem like he noticed since he immediately started checking me for injuries. I don’t even know when he got here?
Donnie sighed but went through with it anyway, tapping on his wrist as he checked my vitals. “No broken bones, no internal bleeding, nothing too concerning to report thankfully. Salena, do you feel alright?”
“Mhm! Just some scratches here and there but I’ll live.”
“Just some scratches, hm? You forgettin’ something?” Leo pointed down to my horrifically bruised and bloody leg. Whoops.
“…I-I’ll still live.”
While Leo took care of bandaging my leg, the rest of us spent the next few minutes catching our breaths. Mikey laid on the floor, limbs starfished out, while Donnie was texting April and catching her up to speed. I can only imagine how devastated she’d be in the morning, finding out she missed all this action. It’d have been nice having her here, honestly.
Raph wasn’t near us, though. He stood by the wall where the once-breathing specimen was at. He kept peeking through the crack, rubbing his arm and looking hesitant about something.
“Raph?” My voice prompted the others to turn their attention to him.
“…Nobody else wonderin’ what the hell this thing could be? I know we’re only here to stop the Purple Dinos—“
“That’s Purple Dragons, Raphala.”
“—Whatever! But really, guys! After all that, we just gonna head home and forget about it?”
He’s not wrong.
Come to think of it, this place is government funded. There should be no reason why some foreign entity exists in a place like the TCRI. They’re supposed to do space research and nothing else. That’s what they’re paid for.
“You know what?” Donnie turned his phone off. “I could work on hacking through their system myself. I don’t know if it’ll prove successful, but I can try.”
I felt Mikey’s head drop on my shoulder. He sure loves doing that. “What do we do about the vine thingies?”
“Well, we can’t just—“ Leo paused, making eye contact with Raph. They shared a smirk and nodded.
“You thinkin’ what thinkin’ big bro?”
He chuckled, punching his fists together. “You bet!”
A bright red aura surrounded his figure as his arm reeled back and locked the sais in his hands.
“POWER PUNCH JUTSU!!!”
My body staggered as the ground shook upon impact, the dust clearing to reveal the tiny gap in the wall is suddenly a giant ass hole now.
“Man, y’all really don’t give a shit about government property, do ya?”
“Nope. But hey! It was def the right choice!” Raph’s snaggletooth gleamed through his mischievous smile.
The five of us stared through the hole, trying to comprehend the oversized specimen in front of us. It was a pulsing, yellow-green thing in the shape of a tall tube, wider on the top than the bottom. There were reddish lines on it zigzagging up and down almost like veins. It was punctured at its middle, caused by the blade of the katana that shot right through it a few moments ago.
“Ya know, it kind of resembles a plant. Which would explain the mystery vines, actually.”
“What plant, then? Ain’t no plant Raph knows of that throbs.”
He shook his head with a light shrug. “Sadly, I am not sure. It looks a little like a pitcher plant but also not really? They shouldn’t be luminescent or have vines emerging out like that. And also the throbbing, of course.”
Pitcher plant, ay? I’ve heard of that. They’re my favorite out of all the carnivorous jungle plants Zane rambled about once. Plants were actually one of the first things we had a genuine bond over, even if I’m pretty clueless about them. The way his eyes lit up when talking about them with so much love and adoration just melted me.
His eyes…
His godforsaken eyes…
“Salena?”
“Huh?” How long have I been spaced out?
“You sure you’re good? You seemed kinda out of it just now.” I forgot how close Mikey was to me, I should be more careful.
“Yeah, it’s nothing.”
“Really? ‘Cause lowkey, you’ve been off all night. I didn’t wanna say anything but…”
“Oh, no, no, I’m—“
“Actually, you did mention something happened between you and your friend earlier, remember? Before you called me.” This violet ass motherfucker did not just erm actually me at the worst time ever.
“That what this about, big man? Had another fight with your friend?” Why is everyone suddenly focused on me!?
“N-Not the same one! This is someone different, I promise! T-that’s not to say I have a problem with everyone! I just… Um…” Great going, Salena! Now they’ll think you’re just insufferable and incapable of friendship! “I-I don’t think we should be—Well, we kinda have worse issues to worry about, don’t we?”
“Kendra and her yes-men ain’t here yet. What I wanna know is why you’re so spacey tonight! Dr. Feelings can’t help if he can’t know!”
“It’s nothing! N-nothing too bad, at least. He just—A-actually, it was really mostly me so um… It’s hard to explain exactly…”
Geez, my palms are annoyingly sweaty. I really don’t wanna give them the wrong idea, it was just one fight! It’s not a representation of our entire relationship! But I know from experience any time I try talking about Zane to someone, they end up hating him and I don’t want that! Fuck, I should’ve been more careful. My stupid tongue-tied gibberish ain’t helping the situation, either!
My shoulders flinched when I saw Leo stand in front of me, hand on his hip as he faced towards his brothers. “Okay, hermanos, give her some space! Stop smothering! I know we’re all worried, I’m worried too, but if Salena doesn’t wanna talk, they shouldn’t be forced to.”
The others finally piped down. None of them looked happy about it—understandably so—but it seemed Leo was able to convince them to drop it, anyway. I really owe him one.
He peeked over his shoulder to glance back at me. “If you do wanna talk about something, though, we’re here for you.”
…It’s not that I don’t want to. I just don’t see how it’d help anything—
CRASH!!!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT, HAVE WE NOT HAD ENOUGH SURPRISES FOR ONE NIGHT!?
“Good going, Jase. Real quiet of you.”
All of us, equally tense and gripping our weapons to stand guard, took a solid minute to process that the loud crash wasn’t another dumbass robot-plant-arm thing, but instead was Kendra and the other two stumbling through the main door they hacked open. Speak of the dragons and they arrive, I suppose.
She looked over at us and her sharp eyes drooped lower. “Of course.”
I only ever knew Kendra before tonight, none of the other members. Hate her guts since she’s forever engraved as April’s bully in my mind and doesn’t seem to have changed. Her movements and mannerisms still match the coy, conniving person I remember her to be, walking over in such a smug, superior way that screams “greater than thou”. Once, back when they were still in high school, April had a mini breakdown due to college applications kicking her ass. She was struggling and stressing over not getting accepted into a good amount of her options and believed she’d have to rely solely on her safeties at that point. Kendra really rubbed it in. Wouldn’t shut up about it, demeaning her for being a failure.
April knows damn well to never take Kendra seriously. However, it’s not a surprise those words still stung considering how stupidly frightening the whole college process is. Joke’s on Kendra, though. One of April’s main choices that had her wait-listed ended up accepting her in! As for Kendra? All hypocritical bark, no bite it seems.
“Hello, Von Ryan. How’s life?”
“Good, good. How about you, enjoying your—what’d you call it? ‘Intellectual freedom’?”
“Low blow even for you. You guys couldn’t fuck around here with your little toys another night?” She scoffed and rolled her eyes, her arms crossed over her chest. Her gaze drifted towards me as her brows furrowed more.
“Who’s that—Hold up. You… Yeah, I remember you!” She’s doing that annoying fake-nice tone she uses sometimes, the one that makes me wanna punch her in the face. “You’re that idiot kid April wouldn’t shut up about tutoring last year! What’s a teacher’s pet like you doing here?”
Mikey gasped and covered my ears like a parent to a toddler witnessing sailor-speak. “Hey! Don’t you dare talk about our friend like that!”
I honestly couldn’t care less what Kendra says about me. Personally, I’m more focused on the other two, right now. It’s my first time ever seeing them, I think Donnie said their names were Jason and Jeremy? They’ve been pretty quiet so far, standing at her side and smirking like Saturday-morning cartoon lackeys. One of them had a large, blocky figure, dark skin, and dyed green hair. His gold visor looked pretty cool, I’ll admit. The other—I could guess from his hunched demeanor alone—was definitely their token punching bag. He’s got these awkward gloves that are way too big for his hands. Dark eyes, short, black hair, and round… glasses…
NO FUCKING WAY!
“YOU—HIM! OH MY GOD! NOOOO, NO-NO-NO-NO! NO! NO!” Ain’t no motherfucking way this bitch is who I think he is, this has to be a prank! It has to! For the sake of my sanity! Oh, but it isn't! It’s fucking real!
“...Salena? You doin’ okay?” The others looked concerned at my sudden and dramatic outlash. Fucking of course, Donnie and Mikey wouldn’t know! Jason still had the bag over his head when he was around them! Fuck, why didn’t I just take it off right there!?
“Jason! That asshole was who we saved from Meatsweats a few months ago!”
Raph and Leo looked just as lost as before. Mikey and Donnie, on the other hand, went pale with shock.
“That was you!?” Donnie’s staff pointed directly at the fucker. “Why didn’t you say anything!? I know you recognized my voice!”
“I can’t believe Salena and I interrupted a perfectly nice day to save you of all folks! You ruined our lovely little ice cream date, dawg!”
“I was being kidnapped by a pig monster? Why would I reveal I’m a rival when you were the only help I had?”
“And yet, here you are, the very reason we’re stuck in this creepy facility, preventing you three from illegally accessing information and doing who knows what with it even though you now owe us one, YOU UNGRATEFUL MENACE!”
Before I could fix my brain enough to join in on justifiably shaming the idiot, I noticed Leo and Raph exchanging confused glances at each other.
“...What the hell is going on?”
“Raph don’t know.” They both looked at me for answers because the universe hates me.
I tearfully and shamefully explained the bullshit scenario we are now stuck in due to my impulsivity. “Donnie, Mikey, and I saved a guy from Meatsweats I think back in April? H-he had a bag over his head so they didn’t know what he looked like and I-I was the only one who saw him without it b-but I didn’t know he was part of the fucking Purple Dragons and—Fuck my life! My first ever save and it was a villain!?” The one time I actually did something useful…
God, there’s so much noise everywhere! Everyone’s arguing with each other or trying to get it to stop or whatever else is going on! My head hurts. Why did I even come here? I should’ve just went home. I should’ve stayed with Zane. I keep getting in the way, I keep making mistakes, I keep ruining things!
I have to keep my composure, though. I don’t wanna cry in a situation like this, not when I’ve already done enough harm.
“Wait a sec, where’s Jeremy?”
We all paused, the realization clearing up as we heard a cheer from another room. “Yes! I got in! I got past the system!”
“Holy shit, he’s in the computer lab! Quick, we—”
A bat hit Donnie straight on his stomach and knocked him back, Raph catching him so he wouldn’t fall to the floor.
Kendra clicked her tongue as she laughed. “I gotta hand it to ya, you morons somehow turned off these stupid security systems. Definitely the most annoying part I’d have had to figure out; I guess that’s why I wanted ‘em, anyway. I don’t know how you did it but congrats! You’re not completely useless.” It looked more like she was addressing Donnie over any of us.
“But now?” She and Jason blocked the door. Her bat stood by her side. “Stay out of my fucking way.”
Obviously, that’s not happening, so chaos erupted instead. One would think a Two VS. Five would be pretty easy to handle… until they saw how well Kendra used her bat, that is. She’s faster than I expected, able to zip around before anyone could properly react. Definitely has a strong arm, too. Then, of course, there’s the traitor. Jason pushed his glasses up his nose bridge and took out his own set of weapons. Or should I say, whipped them out. ‘Cause they’re actually fucking whips.
They were almost impossible to get by. Glowing in the dark room, buzzing from the static friction they made against each other.
He targeted them towards Leo who barely managed to dodge just in time. Mikey, not being as lucky, got smacked right in the face.
“OW! Hey! Since when did he even have those!?”
“Oh! Since last week, actually. I made them using—”
Either the bitch has good hearing or I was too loud when my sickle swung at his head. “Are ya dense!? How are you still tryna maintain small-talk after literally betraying us!? You know what I looked like, you wouldn’t have even said anything if I didn’t call you out! You lied to me! I saved you and you lied!”
“AH! The hell, man!? You’re gonna kill me for that!?”
“No!” The sickles weren’t sharp, only a little solid. I know I gotta resist. Unfortunately. “Just knock you out for a bit, you scheming piece of shit!”
I wish I could say I was making up for my several blunders tonight by at least being able to handle the living embodiment of a toothpick. My leg’s not super mangled up but, surprise-surprise, it’s hard to move at my fastest and dodge with it still being injured. He’s a little impressively good with those whips, too. It’s hard keeping track of where they both are at all times, the difficulty only increased by how quick he’s able to use them considering he’s only trained for a week. I’m trying my damn best with what I can.
“Oh my god, give it up with the guilt-tripping! I’m not gonna turn on my sister just ‘cause you saved me once!”
“Hell no! I risked turning into mutant-munchies for you—Hol’ up a sec.” The pure blasphemy that came out of his mouth shocked me so bad, I actually had to pause. “Kendra’s your sister? Ew, what’s that like?”
Yet another mistake on my part. One of the whips wrapped around my sickle to fling it and I—determined to not lose them again—got shot through the air along with it.
At this rate, I’ll be free-bird flying and crashing to the floor every five minutes. I don’t even feel like getting up anymore. Fuck, I don’t usually feel pain so easily.
Hm?
The battle ground’s a little chaotic so it’s hard to follow when in the middle of it. But, now that I’m seeing it from a distance, everyone’s intentions are suddenly ten times clearer. Kendra’s hovering towards a specific direction, dancing around the door to where Jeremy is. Jason’s distracting everyone and keeping them from paying attention to her. I have a feeling that’s very much so on purpose.
She’s starting to go in. I guess it doesn’t matter whether or not I want to, I gotta get up now. I closed my eyes and with whatever strength I had, used my sickles to turn invisible and go after her.
I snuck by Kendra and entered the lab. Jeremy was glued to the computer, staring at a loading screen. On the side of the PC was a USB stuck to the port. Of course, accidentally saving the villain wasn’t enough! They had to use the same shitty USB we went back for, too.
“Jeremy, status report!”
“It’s almost done downloading the files! Just a few more seconds and… We got it!”
“Nice work! Quick! Toss ‘em over!”
Oh boy, if Kendra’s able to gain the instructions for those freaky arms, who knows what she’ll make with it! I can’t let them get access to anything here!
Thus, following my usual rule of acting-without-thinking, I threw a sickle at the USB. I don’t know if it was my panic or my rage that caused it to be so sharp but it cut the USB in half mid-air and smashed straight into one of the PCs. My punishment for resorting to such destructively impulsive solutions was being greeted by the lovely melody of security sirens going off for breaking their important tech.
“No! My USB! There was so much stuff in that! Fuck!” She is so seriously distraught over the wrong thing.
Upon retrieving my sickle, I hadn’t realized I was flickering in and out of visibility till Kendra’s bat nearly made contact with my head. “You little skeeze! Do you have any idea how much of my progress you destroyed!”
“But that’s mine and Jason’s progress—“
“SHUT UP!” She snapped her head back to bark at him and I took my moment of escape, knocking her down out of my way. Still, she kept up by yanking at my leg and pulling me down with her, severely getting on my nerves by now.
So, I kicked her in the face.
She stayed there, groaning in pain, while her sidekick buddy checked on her. Sure, I could’ve kicked a little softer but I think a bloody nose is merciful enough for her.
I returned to the lobby, greeted by chaos more hectic than before. The alarms and sirens were still blaring, red lights flashing on and off the entire facility. Our oh so beloved security arm friends returned in even greater numbers now! If I believed in superstition, I’d believe this night was cursed.
Jason’s looking a little overwhelmed now having to solo both the Teenage Mutant Mad Dogz and the newly emerged robot claws, yet he’s still not giving in and letting the guys go in peace. Speaking of them, they’re scattered all over the place, trying to keep themselves and each other from getting yoinked and flung like I was earlier.
Donnie was the only one who managed to maneuver over to me.
“Salena!?”
“Donnie! What’s going on!? Where’d the stupid arms come from!?”
“Well, I suppose it’d be impractical if they only had one source of their weird mystic high-tech robots, so there’s that.” He spun his tech-bō and whacked away the claw that was following him. “What happened in there? You disappeared and then we heard a loud crash from that room and suddenly everything got dialed up to eleven!”
“Uh, yeah, my fault, I uh—Eek!” Thank god for reflexes, the only thing that let me slice at a robot arm before it sliced me. “Good news is, I destroyed the USB they were using so Kendra can’t access the government’s whatever-the-fuck anymore! Bad news, I also accidentally destroyed one of their computers in the process, set off the security alarms, and now we’re here. Sorry, haha…”
“You what!?”
“It was an accident, I swear! I really didn’t mean—”
“You annoying little twinkle-toes!” Kendra charged at us from behind and her bat swung directly at me. Thankfully, Donnie blocked it from knocking me dead and sent Kendra back a few steps.
“You know what? If you got Kendra this mad, then you’re forgiven for everything on my terms! Let’s go!” He grabbed my wrist and dragged us away from the bat-wielding maniac.
Though, I’m not sure whether a metal bat or metal claws are worse. A bunch of them charged towards me now that I got back within their sight.
“Move!” He shoved me out of the way of the monster claws.
I slid on the ground, actually keeping my balance this time, and swung at another claw coming from my right. Without having a moment to breathe, I ducked and slashed at one right above me. I would’ve missed the one coming from behind me, had Raph not been there and created a mystic shield. There’s so many all around the flat and it seems I’m still their favorite toy.
“Salena, try hidin’ somewhere!” He punched one of the claws straight on, the impact causing a loud clunk. “They keep coming after you!”
“I can’t! They saw me even when I turned invisible, they probably have a different type of vision or something!”
“Infrared vision, genius!” Kendra’s bat got caught by my sickle. She aimed for my torso this time, I’m surprised it wasn’t back at my head. “They were built with thermal sensors! Which I would’ve been able to shut off if somebody didn’t break the computers!”
“God, were you built to get on people’s nerves!?”
I’ve just about had it with her bullshit, reflected in my blades turning sharp enough to slice her bat in half. I elbowed her in the stomach and took the chance to roll over to a new spot. The closest I can get to hiding is continuously moving, staying in one place meant getting hoarded.
Mikey grumbled nearby, his nunchucks spinning in his hands. “Man, they’re too much! We gotta go! Leo?”
“A bit busy!” Busy was right, he’s cutting down a good number of the plastic pains with his katanas. There’s no good opportunity to use them as an escape portal, let alone any safe ones.
Beep! Beep!
Donnie raised his gauntlet up and flashed what I assume to be the building’s security cameras he hacked into. “Oh, no, no, no, guys! They’re sending actual human officers up now! What do we do!?”
Everyone’s panicked, shit’s fucked to the brim, and the constant beeps and shrieks are only making it harder to think! Kendra’s yelling about her bat, Mikey’s chosen to deal with the Purple Disasters while they’re bickering away, Raph’s boxing the claws and shielding Donnie, who’s frantically typing at his wristwatch to hack the security, and Leo’s… Screaming and getting flung. Sweet, we’ve matched now.
I ran over to Leo, guarding him from the arms trying to take advantage of the situation. “So, how’d you like your first flight?”
“I’d prefer it more if I was actually expecting it.” He got up almost as fast as he crashed down, not wasting a single second to getting back in the fight. “Ugh, I gotta get us out of here, but I need an opening!”
“Want me to try clearing something out?”
“You got any plans on how—Shit, get back!” His arm pushed me back behind him to avoid getting hit.
The white tails of my ribbon flew forward, slightly blocking my vision. I looked straight ahead, past the death machines and battle-ground chaos, and saw the glass windows showcasing the brightly-lit city night.
The ribbon…
…Bingo.
“I actually might.” I tugged at the silk tails and felt my hair flow down as it got undone. “Just trust me and get everyone out at the first opportunity you get!”
“Wait, what are you—”
I dashed past him before he could ask any questions, no real time for them now. My multitasking skills were given the ultimate test as I focused on darting across the room, intentionally getting the arms to gather and chase after me, while tying the ribbon to the handles of my sickles and connecting them together.
In the corner of my eye, I saw Mikey had managed to take out Kendra and her sidekicks. Don’t even gotta worry about them now, it’s going better than I thought! There was pounding at the door. Seems Donnie locked the officers out for now, but I doubt it’ll be long till they find a way to break in by force. Gotta move fast. This plan could fail horrifically, but it’s the best shot we’ve got!
With all the security arms focused on me now, the boys had a clear opening to leave. I sprinted to the windows, wound back my sickles, and broke the glass with a single throw.
Now or never!
“HOT SOUP!!!”
And out the window I went.
The air felt amazing, rushing by my skin as I let gravity take over the fall. I turned myself over, now looking up at the sky. The arms were shooting out the windows, unable to reach down any further to get me. A flash of blue from the inside indicated everyone was out safely. That’s my cue to prevent myself from dying now!
I held onto one of my sickles and swung the other one up. My spine tingled as a pink aura washed over my hand and over the sickle that I grabbed, trailing its way up the white silk ribbon…
Transforming it to chains!?
The pure white mystic chain clanked as it stretched out. The sickle I threw up now broke through the glass side of the building and continued shattering through it straight down. A few broken shards chipped at me as I snapped back to reality and remembered the original plan. I closed my eyes and refocused on the sickles. No thoughts, no distractions, no room for any of them. I have to breathe. I have to focus.
The blades morphed them into a stiff rubber. Too soft to break the glass, too strong to break itself in half, effectively yanking me to a stop.
I did it.
I actually fucking did it!
“Holy truffle mac and cheese, that was awesome!”
“I know!” I excitedly greeted Donnie who had flown over using his jet pack. “I can’t believe it went so well! You saw it all?”
“And recorded!” He turned his back towards me and pointed at his shell. “Need a ride?”
“Definitely.”
We cruised across the sky onto the roof of a nearby building where the rest of the guys were. The instant I hopped off Donnie’s shell, Leo jumped me with a hug, followed by several frantic checks to make sure all limbs were intact.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt? Are you dizzy? What’s wrong with you? You’re crazy! You’re crazy, you know that!?”
“Now who’s smothering them?” Mikey snickered at Leo, who looked relieved and on the verge of tears at the same time.
“Everyone shut up and look at this video first! You’ll probably forget whatever meaningless chitchat you were having, anyway!” Donnie hissed from glee, using his extra mechanical limbs to huddle us all around his phone that was playing the video of me from a few moments ago.
Looking at the footage now, it seemed the pink aura actually came from my whole body. It spread throughout my arms and circled past my hands, flowing to the white ribbon and replacing them with shimmering, white chains.
Mikey screamed from excitement, holding onto my hands. “MYSTIC CHAINS! Omigosh, we match now! We’re like twins!”
“I know! Isn’t it great!? We can be chain buddies—Eh, nevermind, that doesn’t sound right.”
We sat around for a while so Leo could help with all the cuts and microscopic bits of glass stuck to me. In the meantime, they were all curious how the chains even came to be, which I sadly didn’t have a clear answer for. I went ahead and reassured them my plan would’ve still worked with the ribbon itself, though. Speaking of, I can’t really get my ribbon back now. Sorry, Mi. However, I did figure out how to make the chains vanish and re-materialize, so at least I don’t have to learn a different fighting style!
Donnie was paying attention, I think. Just multitasking with a few holographic monitors up. He sighed and put ‘em away after a while.
“Yeah, no, sorry guys. Maybe my brain’s too fuzzy but I can’t hack into the actual database tonight.”
“No big deal, Don. Ya done enough.” Raph gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder. “Hey, you guys wanna go grab some pizza? Raph could use a break.”
“Yeah, I think we all could.” Hopeful, green eyes faced towards me. “Salena? It’s late but… You wanna join us for a bit?”
It’s around 3am now. If I went home now, I’d only get three hours of sleep and that’s assuming I’ll conk out immediately. It’s not impossible, though, I can feel the energy crash creeping up from all the adrenaline. But, I don’t know. I don’t wanna go yet.
“I’m already out, aren’t I? Might as well!”
Turns out, for once tonight, I made the right choice. It was fun getting to be with them in a more casual manner. Just chilling at a park, enjoying some pizza, and re-energizing myself as I watched them goof around. I checked through my phone while I enjoyed the delicious cheesy glory.
Everything seemed normal.
Except for one tiny issue.
I was putting it off but Zane sent a voice note to me a few hours ago. I don’t have earbuds but everyone’s pretty distracted right now, anyway. I could listen to it. Maybe it’s… Maybe it’s better than I think it is.
I lowered the volume just to have it barely audible and clicked play.
“Hey. Um… I hope you’re home and safe now. I…” He sighed and went silent for a while.
“This wasn’t how I intended tonight to be. It was such a gorgeous night. The weather was perfect. Everything was perfect. It was all going so well. What happened? Why do we always end up like this?”
I wish I knew. Or that he knew. Maybe we could’ve helped each other if just one of us knew what was the problem.
“Everything in my life always goes so wrong. I’m so tired of it, Salena. You’re the only thing I haven’t messed up. I don’t want to mess this up. I just—” I could hear a creek from the door opening as someone came in the room. “Yeah, it’s on the floor, clean it up. I don’t know how, just go clean it!”
Sounds of glass being swept up filled the background atmosphere. Zane sighed again. “Sorry. One of my vases broke tonight. The cherry on top, right? Anyway, uh… I’ll just end it here. I hope you’re okay. I hope you’re dreaming of something nice. And I’m… I’m sorry.”
The voice note ended. It wasn’t that bad, I guess. I feel a little bad about earlier but I’m glad he apologized. I guess things are fine now. I should probably leave a text, it’d be wrong to hold a grudge if the situation’s already resolved.
You: hey i’m safe yea. I just wanna say i’m sorry too for lashing out like that earlier. I hope you’re sleeping well, sweet dreams and see ya tomorrow <3
There we go. Nothing to worry about now. Nothing to stress over.
A hand tapped at my shoulder. I raised my head to meet Mikey smiling down at me. “Mind if I sit? They’re bein’ a little loco even for my taste right now.”
I looked straight and saw Leo and Donnie arguing over whether pineapple belongs on pizza and Raph taking the opportunity to sneakily eat their slices. Pretty tame behavior from them, but Mikey’s tone was too lighthearted to be serious, anyway.
I shifted over on the bench and patted the empty space next to me. He sat down and brought his knees to his chest, his back leaning against my side. He shuffled with his phone for a bit before offering me one of his earbuds. “Wanna listen to Fall Out Boy with me?”
“Sure!”
I could use some music after tonight.

thinking about the dichotomy between spy and pyro.
Italian leather shoes against mud stained rubber. Sleek, fancy cotton clothes next to kevlar stained with grease, sweat, and dried blood. The handle of an axe, slowly splintering with use, lying beside a freshly cleaned balisong. The scent of gasoline and floral perfume, cool cologne. A cigarette next to a pilot light. Dark reflective lenses, meeting his eyes through curls of cigarette smoke. Squeaky, shiny gloves and soft calfskin together. Big zippers and silk ties.

So they’ve decided on you to fuck up my work.
- Ian Fleming to Sean Connery on being cast as James Bond
By the time auditions for the role of James Bond in the first 007 movie, Dr No, were held in 1961, Connery was a well-established and highly regarded serious actor, but Fleming reportedly didn’t think he was right for the part of 007.
Connery said that Patrick McGoohan, James Mason, Rex Harrison, Stewart Granger and Richard Burton (all approved by Fleming as being suitable for the role) were ruled out, for various reasons. The casting wasn’t going well and had even been advertised in stage magazines.
Eventually, Connery was taken in to see the casting directors and he got the part. However, Fleming wasn’t happy with their choice, reportedly saying privately he was nothing but an “over-developed stunt man”, describing him as “unrefined”. Connery reciprocated the feelings, calling Fleming “a real snob”, but admitting he was “interesting”.
Tumblr media
Connery was surprised to get the part, because he had heard how Fleming felt about him. Apparently, Dana Broccoli, wife of producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, was instrumental in getting Connery the part, as she was convinced he was the right man. Fleming’s girlfriend, Blanche Blackwell, also said he had the right “charisma” for the role.
Fleming’s frustration over the direction his series was being taken was revealed when he confronted first time director Terence Young at a United Artists function in London.
Fleming squared up to the realities of an untested director guiding a half-known ex-labourer star into James Bond’s elegant world.
Mr Fleming vented: “So they’ve decided on you to fuck up my work.”
But Mr Young “was not shaken” and told him: “Let me put it this way, Ian. I don’t think anything you’ve written is immortal as yet.
Ian Fleming wrote relatively little about Bond’s style, sketching in only the briefest of descriptions while devoting pages to the overblown outfits of Bond’s foes. A little goes a long way. Terence Young took Connery to Anthony Sinclair, a tailor on London’s Conduit Street at the northern end of Savile Row. Sinclair was Young’s tailor. He specialised in what he called the “Conduit Cut,” a fitted hourglass shape to the jacket that suited fit, military men. It was deliberately at odds with the boxy fashion suits worn by most young men at the dawn of the swinging sixties. Cutting like that stood out as slightly behind the times but reassuringly expensive.
Tumblr media
Next Young took him to Turnbull and Asser, his shirtmaker on Jermyn Street several blocks away south of Piccadilly. There, Connery was fitted with the same pale blue cotton poplin shirts and knitted navy silk ties that Young wore day in day out himself. It was Young who gave Bond his turned back “cocktail” cuffs, a sartorial detail that at the time defined a man as both well-to-do yet rather rakish.
Bond’s style was extremely precise, the spare but expensive, handmade wardrobe of a military man, not overtly fashionable but not fuddy-duddy, either. It met and exceeded accepted standards of dress while remaining deliberately unsensational. Fashion in all its preening frivolity was always reserved for Bond’s vain, egotistical nemeses like Goldfinger, Blofeld, or Largo. As a recipe for worry-free style, Connery’s Bond defined and still defines the clean-cut ideal of a wardrobe that transcends fashion and becomes eternal.
If Bond was the establishment man in town, the exotic and tropical locations around the globe were the backdrop for him to get a bit more experimental with his off-duty wardrobe. It didn’t always work. That said, Connery fares better than all succeeding Bonds as his wardrobe for the beach is still as spare and restrained as his working day clothes. Later Bonds fall prey to the gravitational pull of fashion and pay the price. Roger Moore suffers from this and unfairly, I think. It’s not his fault he got the gig in the hedonistic 1970s. But just about the only thing Connery’s Bond gets wrong is in Goldfinger, where he appears in Miami in a sky-blue terry-cloth onesie. Somehow, he gets away with it.
Tumblr media
In the end it was a cocktail: Connery’s suave style with his own rough edges poking through that gave Bond his bite. It resonated with the socially and geographically expanding world of the 1960s; Connery was a forerunner of a whole generation of working-class British actors made good - like Michael Caine and Terence Stamp - who personified a rougher and racier sexuality on screen. In clothing terms, Connery’s Bond gave all young man an easily referenced visual encyclopedia of how to dress well without ever overdoing it.
Tumblr media
The two didn’t meet until filming was underway. Connery’s performance won the writer over immediately. In fact, Fleming liked Connery so much that he later gave the spy a Scots heritage to mirror the actor’s own. In his novel, You Only Live Twice, published in March 1964, Fleming wrote that Bond’s father was from Glencoe.

CHWHWN: 29./30. December - "One day left"
29. December
The next day, Izuku lay on the couch with a book. It was one of three books about the history of superpowers in different countries that his mother had sent him all the way from America. Instead of a bookmark, one of the books contained an extremely long letter, which he didn't know if it was an apology or a reproach after reading it. He turned a page and had both sides of the book in his hands when something slammed the book hard into his face, one of his own thumbs digging into his left eye, and the loud rustle of an old plastic bag drowning out his surprised curse. But not the evil snicker from behind the couch.
"Kacchan! My book!"
"I have something more precious here," he claimed, digging a finger through the bag and into the space between his ribs.
"What is it?"
"Look inside."
Upset by the surprise attack, but still mostly curious, Izuku pushed the book onto the small table in front of the couch and sat up straighter to look into the bag.
At first, all he saw was black, but when he put his hand inside and finally pulled out the soft, heavy fabric, he saw delicately embroidered cranes in subtle silver. Then he caught a whiff of a scent that made his next question unnecessary: "This is from you.
"Yes. A few years old, but I think it would fit around your shoulders."
"It's a ... kimono?"
" Yes," Katsuki, impatient as ever, pulled out the entire contents of the bag and stood up to show him the robe in all its glory. Izuku stared at the delicate orange accents, the shiny silver seams and was pretty sure that what he saw was a handmade piece. From Kacchan's father. One of a kind.
"But, Kacchan, I can't - what about you?"
"Like I said, it's my old one," Katsuki pointed out, rising from the couch and pressing the garment to Izuku's chest, "I have a new one. Cooler, of course."
Still stunned, Izuku held the fabric in his hands as carefully as if it were silk and followed the blonde across the room with his eyes. By the door, he stopped again, "Dad will be home in two hours, I've already let him know."
"Let him know what?"
"If it doesn't fit, Dad can fix it for you until the day after tomorrow."
Just as he was about to tell him that he wouldn't accept the kimono or his father's extra work, he received a dangerous look from glowing eyes.
"Contradiction is not an option, Izuku."
30. December
"Better?"
Izuku stood in Kacchan's father's sewing room, arms outstretched to both sides, holding a pincushion in one hand and his belt in the other.
"It... I don't know - I," had never worn a kimono before.
"Stretch your arms out in front of you, like this," Masaru instructed, pulling the sleeves up to his ankles and checking how tight the fabric was around his shoulders, "and now let them fall, okay."
The belt was taken from his hand and tied around his waist in a complicated knot. Then he tugged a little more, stepped back for a moment and nodded.
"I'll shorten this too," he smiled his fatherly smile and untied the knot with practiced hands, "then we're done."
"I don't know how to thank you all," Izuku whispered and handed over the small pillow with the pins. Just when he thought that his little concern would be smiled away as usual, Masaru rubbed his chin before giving him a gentle look.
"Go to the shrine with him."
"Okay," Izuku replied immediately. They had already agreed on that, but it seemed more special than Kacchan had implied. "Do you go every year?"
"Well," Masaru mused with a somewhat indecisive shrug, "he didn't want to go this year."
"No?" Izuku asked as he was helped out of the kimono without tripping, "Why not?"
"I don't know, son," they exchanged a knowing look, "Katsuki doesn't talk much about things that bother him. Unfortunately."
Izuku nodded.
"Do you want to see what his new kimono looks like or..."
"No thanks," Izuku interrupted politely, "I want to see it on Kacchan tomorrow."
The answer was a warm chuckle, then a "I see.“

travel notes
Athens: Athens was not incredibly memorable. I thought of it as a city to live in.
Naxos: in naxos my hair was curly again, i wore a 2 piece los angeles apparel set and walked around an infuencer's backdrop for 5-10 minutes at a time. i met mormon and canadian assorted girls on the beach, i followed one of them to the top of the hill at the windiest sunset since Albany Bulb winters. in another part of naxos i visited a bustling beachside bar alone one night after a martini at a neighboring beachside restaurant. the bartender was curious about how alone i was, he liked me. i, drunk, was likeable in my giant skirt and silk blouse. i left silently
Santorini: Santorini was an existential crisis. The room I stayed in during the last two days was Peace embodied. Not much else mattered, and the window view of the caldera from the mezannine cannot be captured in any photograph
Crete: in crete i waded through the thigh-deep water, my silver canon tied firmly around my wrist. i marveled at the quite silence of the hotel, at night i went out to sit in the sand. i swam in crete, i sat and read deborah adele's book in crete. i felt lonely and utterly bored in crete. i loved that everyone was allowed to look the way they wanted as they walked aimlessly from one end of the beach to the other-- no one was hiding anything from sight. no body was unwelcome, all bodies were represented. most were burned, even mine got close. in crete we remembered my grandfather and dreamed up the paths he took through the island. in crete we traveled to the pink sand beach, where i hope to have learned a valuable lesson about Wanting What You Don't Have, and Replacing A Feeling of Lack with An Object.
Austria: in Austria we stayed at a hotel with a winding staircase and ate a continental breakfast in that odd room, hushed voices and european stares. Though I care not for the history, for the first time since the start of the trip, I felt good. I felt open to new experience and full of wonder. i kept repeating to myself over the smallest novelties, "fascinating", and stepped out of the smoke-filled echo chamber of the hotel alleyway every day with a sense of calm preparedness. We walked to a big gothic church and that was beautiful, I'll admit. The gargoyles looked friendly against blue sky and in sunlight.
Armenia: in armenia one of the first nights i spoke to a million people at the new trendy russian bar, of course after harassing the russian bartenders for not speaking armenian. first dea and aleen, then kristik's group of russian repats, then the diaspora mix at the round table and later still walking towards polygraph with Mushegh and his talkative friend who's name i forgot.  it was a marvelous night of speaking in all languages, i enjoyed it very much after weeks of no social interaction. another one of those nights we visited an exhibit in an underground stone cave, spoke to a kind man nextdoor about the power of diaspora contribution to armenia and he gifted us handmade soap. we met kristik's friends on Cascade around midnight and i learned so many different armenian folk dances. we danced around the fountain until we were sweating and tired at 3am, it was marvelous. many full, endless nights full of conversation. so much more social than anything in the US
Georgia: in georgia i disliked the folks. on the second day I walked up the hill, stopping for 2 individual khinkali, and heading up through the forest to the waterfall. I climbed down again, now through sulfur smelling rivers to the baths. I decided to head home as my phone died and stopped by the first place i see to charge it in order to get home-- a little wine bar. I end up staying there from 8pm-3am with ilia, one of the bar's founders. we talked about everything, he had armenian words and when i tried to pronounce georgian ones he was impressed. i haven't had that much wine possibly ever. what a lovely way to get drunk. and what a lovely way to realize after days of lonliness that connection is always out there, especially when you seek it the least.

Jenny’s bedroom was and wasn’t what Giles had expected. The wallpaper was printed with delicate flowers that he certainly wouldn’t have imagined her selecting herself, and rather than the gorgeous silk sheets that he remembered from her bedroom in Sunnydale, she had chosen patterned flannel sheets and a large handmade quilt. (“Donovan’s mom made that for me,” said Jenny, her smile trembling. “A few months after we first met. Lea’s pretty incredible at…making people feel welcome.”) Yet there were touches of—not quite the woman he remembered, but the woman he had fallen in love with. Sparkly hair ties and old makeup littering the dresser. A framed crayon drawing of a tall, dark-haired figure cradling a smaller one. An eclectic collection of books stacked on the nightstand—The Feminist Witch Mom’s Primer, Gardening for Beginners, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
oh my GOSH it's an update. six months later, at that. who would have guessed???? still no idea which project i am working on currently, lmao. but this 'verse looks like it might be back in the rotation. <3
(also i changed chapter two's title for cohesiveness so if you saw it. no you didn't)

Genders from "Willow" (2022) that I would like to steal
+ bonus
Tumblr media
[begin image description
All gifs are characters from Willow the 2022 high fantasy series.
Gif 1: Boorman sits tied to a central pole inside a thatched wood dwelling, his arms are behind him. He has long wavy black hair and a thick beard. His legs are spread casually in front of him with his knees bent and his feet tucked next to the stump he sits on. He is wearing brown leather pants and a red leather vest over a white linen shirt. Scorpia leans against the pole next to him looking bored. Her hair is up in bantu knots and she wears a chunky necklace among other jewelry over a skintight green cold shouldered shirt, a colorful woven vest, and green linen pants with a knife at her hip.
Gif 2: Elora is outdoors in the woods, watching a monarch butterfly flit in front of her. She holds out her hand to it and waits to see if it will land on her palm. She has long blond hair flowing freely over her shoulders with one chunk of it her natural red. she is wearing a green knit shawl and cloth "sleeves" that fall over her thumb and are tied at the top of her arms.
Gif 3: Graydon leans against a tree outdoors, idly spinning a knife in his fingers. His black hair is shaggy around his ears and neck, and he has a goatee. He is wearing a blue and black striped woven shirt that is rolled up to his elbows. He turns to look at Boorman who has walked up behind him. Boorman is wearing a red vest over a white linen shirt with leather shoulderguards. He wears an armguard on his left forearm and his right shows a tattoo and a thick silver bracelet. He is wearing several rings and pops his eyebrows up at Graydon as he pauses.
Gif 4: Jade, surrounded by a crowd in a clearing in the forest, finishes a somersault away from Scorpia and quickly stands and turns to face her again. She braces and swings a powerful hit at Scorpia with her face twisted in physical effort. She has tightly curled red hair down to her shoulders, with the front pulled back, and wears a blue tunic over leather pants, with a red undershirt and light leather armor over parts of her torso.
Gif 5: Kit crouches defensively next to a part of a stone wall, her sword held above her in protection. Sorsha suddenly slides into frame, deflecting the metal whip that was headed for Kit. She holds her sword confidently at her side, glaring at the threat off screen. She is wearing a yellow silk robe over blue sleep garments, and her hair is half up in clear disarray.
Gif 6: Inside a dimly lit castle room, the blacksmithing queen of legend lifts her welding mask with a breath of relief. She wears a gauntlet on her right hand and forearm which is otherwise bare, and a gorget and full arm coverage on her left. She is streaked with soot and grease.
Gif 7: Kit stands in a bedchamber in a castle, looking down at a partially unsheathed sword that she is holding. Her hair is cut in a shaggy pageboy and she is wearing a linen tunic over pants with a leather torso guard acting almost as a corset around her middle. She is nearly silhouetted by the light streaming in through the windows behind her.
Gif 8: Anne and Hubert sit in handmade Adirondack style chairs outdoors by a log cabin. Both women are wearing worn denim work clothes and floppy brimmed hats. Anne's shirt is red and tucked into a her pants by a wide leather belt, her hat brim is pinned up on one side Australian style. Hubert is wearing blue pants and shirt, leather work gloves, and has a large axe resting across the arms of the chair she is leaning back in.
Gif 9: Airk is sitting on the ground in the Immemorial City with one leg straight out in front of him and the other bent. He is leaning against the base of a fountain, his hands limp and his head tipped back. He is wearing skintight pants with a semi translucent floral patterned shirt tucked in and undone down his chest with a two-tone jacket (studded leather guards around the shoulders and forearms) over it. His hair is shoulder length and layered, and he is wearing several necklaces and a ring.
Bonus gif: Boorman hefts his stave with a very large blade, half his height and a handwidth wide, so that is rests on his shoulder with the blade up. He grimaces at the weight and opens his mouth to sass the group. He is wearing leather studded shoulderguards over a red vest and white linen shirt. His long hair is loose around his shoulders.

30 day lolita challenge, day 5)
I'm doing a lolita challenge from 2011. Tag is "20dollarlolita 30daylorlolita challenge" in case you want to black list or follow.
Today is 10 things from your wishlist.
Last year, I got Tailor's Bear and Typewriting Squirrels, which were the last two of my real dream dresses, so this one's a little bit tougher to nail down. I don't do dream dresses, because I feel like that allows me to justify spending way more money on a dress than I normally would. Considering that I have a wide variety of different interests, my hobby budget isn't as big for lolita as some other people's is, so no dream dresses is one of my rules.
But let's shoot and see what we hit. A running theme is going to be "things that I owned and then sold.":
Tumblr media
1, This Bodyline piano print. So I got into lolita fashion immediately before being diagnosed with a life-changing lifelong mental illness, and somehow my life got separated into a Before and After of that. There's this tiny little part of my lolita fashion life that was in the Before, and buying this JSK (and matching bag) was one of those Before things. It was also the first lolita item that I sold (to help a friend pay for a dog's vet bill), and I've wanted it back ever since.
Tumblr media
2, This weird thing Meta made. I love punk influence and this is one of those things.
3, More embroidered things. I do machine embroidery and digitizing, and I love looking at how things are digitized. I also love the textural element of embroidery versus printing.
Tumblr media
4, Shantung Shirring Princess. I once owned regular Shirring Princess, which I traded for something stupid that I immediately regretted and later accidentally destroyed. I want regular shirring princess back to atone for my sins, but the satin version with the chiffon bustle really calls to me. *checks notes* *checks fabric stash* Wait, I have like...20 yards of silk shantung...I'm going to...uh. I'll be back in a couple days.
Tumblr media
5, Lolita pajamas and room wear. I can't wear lolita at work but I kind of want to wear it when I sleep. Possibly the very first lolita thing that I ever owned was GLB 21 and there was a pattern for room wear. I've never made that pattern but i really should.
6, Pieces made of less common fabrics. More brocades and velvets and pleather and shiny satin and stuff.
Tumblr media
7, I currently have one lolita coat that I've had since like 2011 (another item from The Before, got some very distinct memories of sleeping under that coat because it got cold and I was afraid to tell Housing that it was literally freezing in my room. I wore it when I went to take pictures of nature for the photography class that I failed that term). Here I am wearing it at a 2015 new year's day bonfire. I also wore it to the Bay Area Kei tea party, because it was raining. Every time that it's cold, I have to build a coord around this coat, because it is the only coat I have. I want more. I want more coats. I also once saw an amazing handmade green lolita rain coat and I want that coat, too. I'll never get that coat, but I want that coat. (Also I should probably get some normie coats, because every time it gets cold enough to need a full coat, I have to wear a lolita coord, because this is literally the only coat I own).
8, More prints of cats doing things they shouldn't be doing. Not going to get more specific. Cats being bad, cats being bad at being cats. I want cats doing stuff. Singing in the rain. On a piano. At a tea party. Breaking shit. I need cats.
Tumblr media
9, Fat Happy Meal. I LOVE the colors and the way they work with each other, especially the waist ties and the two-tone lace. I also like that the chicken nuggets are wearing santa hats. Also just more savory lolita.
10. I would absolutely love to own a dress that was handmade by someone else. I think that would just be incredibly cool.
