Solo Leveling Episode 14 Thoughts
The second episode of season 2 was generally fun! Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa below:
The way Sung Jinwoo grabbed the arrows from the hyakki and killed them was honestly a neat bit of animation. It looked cool.
This was a really nice shot. Really love the way Igris looks here in particular. Them standing together is also really cute.
Iron's premiere! He's finally in the anime! He looks great! Huge, and funny. I love finally getting to see the soldier personalities. Also, I love the animation of how tank rally cries/spells to grab aggro look. It's fun. Makes me nostalgic for tanking in mmos T-T
For folks confused where the name came from, it's because the character's name is Chul Kim and Chul means Iron in English (Volume 2, Chapter 7 of the Yen Press English release of the novel, and Volume 4, Chapter 9 of the Yen Press English release of the manhwa).
Woo Jinchul is so tired lol
As I mentioned last time, the sequence where Hwang Dongsoo comes back to South Korea and everything he does in South Korea in this arc was made up for the manhwa (including Jinchul's presence at the gate), and obviously carried over to the anime. I can't say that Chugong's writing is like... great on a lot of levels, particularly considering something later in story (that shows up this episode), and I don't know how much, if any, input Chugong had for the change for the manhwa... but I think this part in the episode further demonstrates how kind of silly the whole sequence is? Like okay, we get it, Dongsoo is irredeemable. No one here has a reason to answer him (though I guess, given he's an S-rank, and Sangmin An is not, maybe that's why the guy answers?). It just feels... really random. From a practical standpoint, Baek Yoonho's presence (in the novel) works because it helps explain to the audience what's happening. And narratively, it works too: he's the guild's S-ranker, he can handle red gates, the team they sent in can't.
I don't know. It's a dumb scene (Jinchul showing off how badass he is, is still fun, it's just... not enough to save the overall prolonged silly sequence). I think the anime handled it well enough. It neither made it worse nor better. Seeing more of Baek's powers animated was cool.
They're just thereeee :3 So happy to see them animated. The soldier hijinks are generally pretty cute. And Igris just being like -I do not see anything- when he turns away from Iron is hilarious.
And the elephant in the room: Yoo Jinho and the underage conversation.
I'm gonna be completely honest: this has always been a stupid scene. It's worse in the novel, it's still bad in the manhwa, just in a different way. The anime probably did the best version of it (to a degree), but it's still bad. Shounen do similar kind of stupid gags, so yeah, I'm used to it, but... ugh.
The novel version of this, from the Yen Press English translation in Volume 2, Chapter 7:
“Boss?” “……?” “Um, Songyi is a minor, boss.” “Yeah, and?” “……Nothing, boss.” What a man among men. Jinho was amazed that Jinwoo refused to be shackled by society’s rules. He really isn’t an average guy, that’s for sure. Jinho reflected on himself for ever measuring Jinwoo against typical societal standards.
And the manhwa version of this scene, from the Yen Press English translation in Volume 4, Chapter 9:
It's just overall not great. I guess it's good we don't get Jinho speculating that they're dating before this (which is in both the novel and manhwa) and Jinho's reaction after talking to Jinwoo other than his being horrified and not knowing what else to do? Would be nice, if he was actually worried, if he tried to do... anything else? But I guess Songyi is okay collateral damage? (I mean yes, obviously, she's fine, this is Jinwoo not telling other people any more info than he has to and Jinho catastrophizing uselessly, but still).
It's not helped by the anime adding her specifically wearing more make-up (the novel just says she's more dressed up; it's hard to tell if she's wearing make-up in the manhwa), and having her squish up against Jinwoo in the car... I'm not averse to her wearing make-up, but the way she squishes up against Jinwoo and kind of sultrily lowers her eyes in one shot is just... It's not great. In the manhwa, they're just sitting near each other but apart. Maybe she has a crush on him (it's kind of left open-ended in the novel/manhwa from what I remember), but it's implied she just generally respects him more. I don't... know what this is.
Literally every version of this scene is bad in different ways. I just don't find it funny.
Outside that, generally the episode was fine! Looking forward to next week!

Solo Leveling Characters and their Zodiac signs
*Heavily based on my headcanons for their ages and the Eastern/Chinese zodiac
Baek Yoon-Ho - Tiger
This should be obvious. However, I also headcanon him to be 34 (based on manhwa merch) rather than the game age of 37 he can't be that old
I will be using Baek Yoon-Ho's age to set everyone else's age
Choi Jong-In - Snake
This is based on how Baek Yoon-Ho calls Choi Jong-In a snake in the story. So if Choi Jong-In was born in the year of the snake, that would make him 31 (this is where I got his age from by the way)
This also fits into my previous headcanon that his age is somewhere between 28-32 (note that I'm ignoring the in-game age)
Min Byung-Gyu - Monkey
If Yoon-Ho is 34, and Min Byung-Gyu is 28 (stated in-game), then this would make Min Byung-Gyu be born in the year of the monkey.
Also based on this tweet (Long story short, Min Byung-Gyu is called a "gorilla-type healer" (based on a sketchy translator))
Lee Ju-Hee - Rabbit
The game says she's 22, but the novel says that she's 21, so I'll be going with 21
Scaling from Min Byung-Gyu's age, this would make Lee Ju-Hee a rabbit
Woo Jin-Chul - Rabbit
I headcanon Woo Jin-Chul to be 2 years older than Choi Jong-In, which would put him at 33 (he's rather young in the game when the novel states that he is older than that)
He's rather similar to a rabbit too. Just the vibe
Liu Zhigang - Rooster
Based on lobyu's headcanon that he is six years older than Woo Jin-Chul
Also, the rooster suits him. There's also a dragon, though that would make him rather young
Lim Tae-Gyu - Rat
So if Baek Yoon-Ho is 34, and Lim Tae-Gyu is 36 (from the game), then Lim Tae-Gyu would be born in the year of the rat
It's kind of fitting. Also just the vibes
Sung Jin-Woo - Rat
Based on how the other ages have been calculated, if Sung Jin-Woo is 24, then he would be a rat
Very accurate in my opinion-
Cha Hae-In - Ox
Cha Hae-In is 23, one year younger than Sung Jin-Woo, which would make her an ox
Strong woman has a strong animal
Park Hee-Jin - Dog
Park Hee-Jin is 26 according to the game, making her born in the year of the dog
Lost puppy energy. Very cute
Go Gun-Hee - Goat
Had to do some math to get there, but if he's 87, then he's a goat
Wise energy. And will kick your a-
Go Gun-Hee = GOAT (credits to manawari)
Sung Jin-Ah and Han Song-Yi - Snake
Assuming they are the same age and Han Song-Yi is 19 according to the game, they're both snakes
Accurate with how Jin-Ah teases Jin-Woo and based on Song-Yi's personality at first

To those confused, Han Song-Yi is 18 years old when she appears in both the Solo Leveling Manwa and Anime. Korea’s age of consent is 19.
In the context of Korean law, Song-Yi is underage. In the context of American law, she is of legal age.
Just wanted to clear it up in case someone thought that Song-Yi was under 18 like I also initially assumed.

Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise From The Shadows- Episode 1 Review - Red Gate
Before I start the review, I normally don’t do the“season X, Episode X” sort of thing because I like to start from where it left off. However, given that this season has a ‘Season 2’ in its title and a subtitle, so I’m going to have to use that format for this season. This is technically episode 13.
The first episode of season 2 probably starts off the day after the events of Episode 12. Jinwoo gets a haircut and goes to Jinah’s school for the parent-teacher conference. Since their mother is bedridden, Jinwoo is technically her legal guardian. Her teacher praises Jinah for being a diligent student all around and her grades are good enough to get into the medical school of her choice. However, the teacher is also concerned about her friend Han Song-yi who hasn’t been attending school as she has become an E-rank Hunter. He takes Song-yi on a mission as he’s trying to convince her to not live her life as a Hunter, so we’ll see how that goes.
The rest of the episode is the mission. However, the group gets a surprise encounter with a Red Gate—a special type of gate where dangerous creatures lurk and Hunters can only leave if they defeat the boss. The leader of the group, Kim Chul only takes a few of his guys and separates from Jinwoo, thinking the weaker members will be a liability. Sir, you are not the main character of this story.
Anyways, it was nice seeing the siblings get some screen time together. They only have each other, after all. I like how Jinwoo’s hair was messy when he woke up. It gives off the vibes that even if he looks and acts perfect, there’s still some cute quirks. Though, his new hair does look nice on him. I think Jinah still thinks of Jinwoo as the frumpy man from the beginning, so that’s why she had a hard time getting adjusting to the new and stylish brother.
The mission itself seems like a step up in difficulty from Jinwoo’s other missions up until now. The enemies are a lot more tougher. Ice elves are stealthy and ice bears look menacing. It’s definitely hard for Jinwoo to not show off his skills but in return, the others have to keep a secret. It was nice to see Jinwoo isolating himself from the group and then summoning his shadow army to get rid of the remaining bears. It’s nice to see that they’re mainly used to take down multiple enemies so that it’d be easier to leave the Red Gate faster. Though, for all the skills Kim Chul talked about regarding himself, he ran away from the Ice Elf army which makes sense because they’re tough—to be honest, running away is a solid strategy, but will it get him killed? I guess I have to find out next episode.
Then, there’s the appearance of Hwang Dongsoo. If you don’t remember, he’s the younger brother of Hwang Dongsuk, the man who tried killing Jinwoo and Jinho back around Episode 6. While he’s out to avenge his brother, the Red Gate hinders his progress. I wonder how he’ll be dealt with. Will he get his own arc?
The animation feels like an upgrade from the previous season. The way the characters move feel more fluid, especially during the shadow army scene. I also love the music and feels like it got an upgrade. The opening and ending songs are nice to listen to! You can’t go wrong with a combination of Lisa and TK from Ling Tosite Shigure for the opening and ending.
The characters remain the same from the previous season, so there aren’t that much of new additions. Han Song-yi is voiced by Miyu Tomita, who’s known for voicing characters like Riko from Made in Abyss and Momo’s friend Muko from Dandadan. Kim Chul is voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi who you might have heard in the Fall season as the U-20 goalkeeper in Blue Lock. Park Heejin was actually shown briefly in the first season, but this is her major debut. She’s voiced by Ruriko Aoki. Aoki has a lot of roles in video games, which includes Tressa from Octopath Traveler and Marla from Bravely Default II. That’s about it for new voice actor information from me.
I think this is a good start of the continuation as a brief recap has been given out to keep viewers updated and it’s a good segue to the possibilities of Jinwoo’s quest to become the strongest. How will he get out? Let me know your thoughts on this episode!

Shadownanigans
Ch 02 || Fried chicken supremacy
Summary:
As Jinwoo’s body & personality start changing following the events of the double dungeon, Jinah has been documenting it. Not entirely on purpose, at first, but then her little following on social media catches sight of something… strange about her brother’s shadow during one of her TikToks, and she becomes determined to find some answers. This turns into a series of shenanigans and silly pranks as she tries to unravel the mystery that is her own older brother, Hunter Sung Jinwoo.
Or: Jinwoo isn’t exactly up-to-date with the latest trends and thinks that Jinah has been recording videos to send to her friends, or maybe as some kind of video diary to show their comatose mother if when she wakes up. He doesn’t realize she’s been posting them on social media for the world to see.
AO3 || Read an excerpt below the cut (formatting is a bitch so I'm not gonna post the whole chapter here lol):
sung_jinah has posted a TikTok.
[Caption: When ur used to eating college kid meals for the past 4 years but ur brother comes home with fried chicken & ice cream🥰🤤]
The camera zooms in on a bucket of fried chicken. Next, it pans to a pint of vanilla ice cream.
Subtitle: ヽ(˘⌣˘)ノ
“Jinah.”
“Hm?”
“I don’t think I can get drunk anym—what are you doing?” a male voice asks, and the camera finally moves in his direction. The man wears a quizzical expression, brows furrowed, lips tilted down. A silver can with a blurred-out label sits in his hand. A piece of chicken dangles from his mouth and he slurps it up in one bite, bone and all. “Why are you filming? Aren’t you hungry?”
“I have to immortalize this moment,” Jinah says and directs her camera back to the food. “It looks so good, I don’t even know if I want to eat it. ’Cause then it’ll be gone and I’ll be in a state of mourning.”
“Hush and eat your chicken before I do.”
“What?” The camera blurs as she rushes to grab the bucket. “You will not, you have your own—”
The video cuts off and loops.

Solo Leveling Episode 10 Thoughts
This episode was wonderful! Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa below:
The scene with Lee Joohee is really well handled, and so sad, especially with the extra anime info about how terrible her mother is... I feel really bad for her in a whole new way. She goes back to them in the manhwa as well (and I think in the novel, it's been a while), but since we didn't know about her family, it wasn't as bad, and felt like a needed break. This way... goodness, this is all kinds of sad.
I still think Joohee was massively underused as a character. I'm not sure if Chugong just decided she wasn't going to be the endgame love interest or what and just moved her out because of that, but the way her whole arc is handled is quite strange, other than maybe like... showing how damaging the dungeon system is in regard to PTSD. Which is a valuable story to tell, it'd be weird if no one else was broken this way (though Min Byunggu and clearly Choi Jongin have this, and Jinwoo and Sung Jinah deal with it to some extent), but Joohee just... she's not handled well at all. The story has things to say about ableism and how mental health is treated in our society. It's just kind of confusing at times.
Han Songyi, you are a child lol I love her still, but she is a child. Acting very much like a high schooler, though, thinking she can take on anything and adults always underestimate her.
I still really love this idea that they do this in a way to help out people who can't raid on their own/would have a hard time joining raids, especially the injured guy. Makes me think of poor Han Yoojin in S-Classes That I Raised, pre-regression...
Yoo Jinho, you are so silly even your husband doesn't take you seriously aldkjaldjal I always thought this back and forth was funny alkdjalj
Jinwoo wowing everyone with his l33t skillz. 4eVR in this section is lovely. Seeing Jinwoo be excited is wonderful :3
The White Tiger recruitment team arrives lol I was wondering if they'd get cut for some reason, given Woo Jinchul is taking up even more time in the anime than he did in the manhwa, and he absorbed a lot of their presence in the manhwa. But nope! Welcome, anime versions of Ahn Sangmin and Hyun Kichul!
Choi Jongin having nightmares of Jeju, poor guy T-T Love that angst, though. Thank you so much for adding this, anime. Bless my sad fire man.
Just beautiful. His Japanese VA does an amazing job.
Sangmin's model looks really nice in the anime. I love how they drew his sideburns and bangs.
Ah yes, we also get an incredibly unnecessary random female passerby ass shot like her skirt has been absorbed by her butt. Lest we forget this adaptation is an action-adventure series probably targeted at the shounen market made in Japan. As I recall, in the webnovel, Kichul does get busy chatting up women at some point (I thought it happened during this scene, but I can't find it looking back, so maybe my memory is just messy with how bad the novel overall is with women a lot of the time).
Sangmin just opening his mouth to a strange hunter aldkjaldja This whole continuing aspect of the story is still so ridiculous alkdjlaj I don't recall it being explained in the manhwa, but in the novel, Jinwoo discovers that he can't give potions he buys to other people to use. They literally disappear. But other people can take them. They just can't hold the bottles. So he has to feed it to them himself, and they can't see the bottles when he doesn't lol He also doesn't want people to see him pulling stuff out of his inventory cause inventory isn't a thing other Hunters have here.
I still love Jinwoo getting one over the stalkers, ahem, scouts. He's so creative, love him. Make the scouts second-guess crossing you :3
Ahhhh finally get Igris next episode T-T So excited. The boi at long lasttttt :333
Excellent episode!!!!
