Headcanon Prompt: 5 Headcanon for Nicole adjusting to a life of piracy with Hamza as time goes by! Could also extend to any headcanons to her and Hamza specifically!

Headcanon time is always a fun time!

Nicole struggled with piracy the first few days, namely the fact of she wasn't used to the stability (albeit wild) that was being provided to her. She was anxious and consistently waiting for the other shoe to drop so to speak, and that she'd be forced to leave or told she wasn't wanted/needed. Hamza probably noticed something and asked her about it one night. Confiding in him definitely took a lot more courage than she would need to actually speak on it. From having her own bed to bunk in, to actually being able to count when her next meal was coming. Even down to being able to ask for assistance should she need it. It was everything she wanted, and everything was overwhelming the first few days.

By the time she's getting acclimated with everything and everyone, she was basically designated the thief. Nicole had a lot playing in her favor. Being as small and 'frail looking' as she was, it made her someone no one would suspect, not easily, anyway. And with Hamza having taught her his skills with sleight of hand, it made swiping things easier for her. She's used to things like the quick piece of bread or fruit and making her way once more. Now she's swiping more elaborate things to help the crew out.

We talked about it, but Hamza didn't really see the usefulness of reading in the beginning. She sat and took the time to explain to him why it's actually a solid idea to learn, and just how much more of a threat he would actually be. So thus began the lessons for not only Hamza, but for more of the crew members that wanted to learn. He's always impressed by her wit? Now he gets to upgrade his too! Maybe he'll finally be a match for her.

Nicole probably didn't find this out for a long time, but Hamza wanted to take her with him far sooner than he actually agreed to. But he was hesitant solely because he knows how rough the life on the sea can be, and he didn't want anything bad to happen to her. It was just that protective instinct in him kicking in and not even sure he realized it at the time either. He definitely didn't know why at the time. Just knew he wanted her safe and was willing to put his own wants aside for it. When he finally did tell her, she just hugged him and thanked him for thinking of her.

The first year on the sea was rough for her, mainly in the fact of she lacked a lot of the strength needed to be a proper crew member. However, it did not stop her from trying. It just meant she needed assistance until she could function on her own. Despite how grating it probably was at times, the crew admired her moxie and her ability to keep up verbally with them, especially shit talking. It's part of the charm that Hamza adores so much in her, now everyone else gets to get a verbal thrashing as well!

AS PROMISED! A big Sleight of Hand Horse Ref!

With the exception of Osito, these are all residents of the Rahmani ranch-and-apiary. 

Hamza was the unlikely result of an encounter between Osito and Luka, who met when their owners (Desert Ranger Anya Soto and Great Khan Rakshasamardini Jha) traveled briefly together. Luka was later left to enjoy retirement on the ranch, and shortly thereafter produced a surprise mule.

Hamza is serious and deliberate. He’s a thinking animal, quick to solve problems and slow to panic. Years of exposure to gunfire through hunting and ranger duties have desensitized him to the sound of combat. He’s dog aggressive, tolerating them only if they give him a respectful berth. He has a special hatred for coyotes and Legion Mongrel.

Miss Chief and Mayor Ham are former NCR military transport donkies. Miss Chief now serves as the solemn guardian-and-bouncer of the property, escorting all visitors to the ranch. If she deems someone too suspicious they’ll be viciously tailed and hee-hawed all the way off the ranch, possibly with a hole in their pants-seat. Mayor Ham is the official fruit-ripeness-tester, and honors his duties by eating fallen fruit in the orchard and checking the snacks in people’s back pockets for poison. He’s short and soft and very obliging. His wishbone tail is considered good luck.
