I thought I would try my hand at the national bird of the US! I snapped the photo off of which I based this art in the middle of a Virginia winter in 2021. It was far away, all the way across a pond, and the I couldn’t tell what it was on the dim screen of my camera until I got back to my uncle’s house.

There is a widespread myth about the US’ national bird that Benjamin Franklin would have preferred it be the wild turkey— the Franklin Institute has debunked this claim about its namesake.

On the flip side, a widespread fun fact about the bald eagle that is true: It is often dubbed over with the sound of red-tailed hawks in films.
