"Saturday night take-out" Black-crowned Night Heron steals a Gallinule chick for dinner. Absolutely savage predation behavior - but not shocking considering herons generally eat anything they can fit into their mouth - including their fellow birds. A first for me - I have never seen BCNH's prey on chicks. Nature is absolutely brutal and wildlife doesn't care about your feelings. It's survive or die. It's in these moments I realize I'm glad I'm not a bird.

"The Wild Balance: A Coyote's Pursuit." This powerful photo series captures a raw moment in nature as a coyote goes after a vulnerable baby pronghorn. The chase unfolds - one animal running for its life, the other for survival. The final 2 images, where the coyote succeeds in its hunt, is a sobering reminder of the harsh realities of life in the wild. While difficult to witness, it’s a testament to the predator-prey balance that defines ecosystems like this one.

Another opportunistic kill; with the grass in the Timbavati being as dense as it is, the scrub hare population as blossomed. This abundance of small meals has served the leopard population of Tanda Tula very well this year.

When salmon are plentiful bears will often seek out their favorite fish or parts of fish to eat. It isn't uncommon to see bears only eat heads, hearts and skin when fishing is easy. This bear was specifically after female fish and their eggs. If he would catch a male he would simply drop it back in the water. When he'd catch a female he'd rush to the shore and step on the salmon to squeeze the eggs out and quickly lap them up. Here you can see the roe flying out of this female salmon as he grabs her from the water. How cool is that?

A Badger bringing a ground squirrel back to its den where she had one cub. I thought the baby would run out to meet her but instead she dropped the squirrel inside the den. Badgers can be aggressive and have some set of teeth on them.

A lion cub refuses to exit the inside of a giraffe carcass despite the prompts from his mom. Fun is fun even if you are playing in blood and gore and not dirt.

A large cinnamon black bear surveys his surroundings from atop the bison carcass in mid-May. The bison died after falling through the ice. The bear preferred the safety of the forest nearby as most black bears do, but came out occasionally to enjoy this carcass.
