DEVELOPING STORY: ABS-CBN News' electoral public service campaign 'Ako ang Simula' returns with a modern twist featuring 'Sofronio Vasquez', P-Pop sensations and vocal powerhouses of Star Magic [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]

OZAMIZ, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL -- Election season in the Philippines is almost upon us by next month in mid-May of 2025. The Voice U.S. (Season 26) winner and Tawag ng Tanghalan alumni 'Mr. Sofronio Parojinog Vasquez' and the Star Magic talent agency team, reportedly received an offer from the Philippine news organization 'ABS-CBN News' to hear a new version of "Ako ang Simula" in the upcoming music video after the Holy Week holiday.

"Ako ang Simula" was a music video campaign launched by ABS-CBN (now known as 'Kapamilya Channel') in mid-June of 2009 to inspire active participation in the Philippine elections. The said campaign enlisted its likes of former Rivermaya boy band 'Rico Granados Blanco', former Imago girl band individual 'Aia De Leon', and current alt-rock band 'Raymund Parcon Marasigan' to support the "Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo" initiative which urged Filipinos to vote responsibly and advocate for transparency and accountability in governance.

For over a decade and a half… the new version of "Ako ang Simula" features the Star Magic singers with P-Pop boy band group 'WRIVE', along with 'Angela Ken Tavares Rojas', 'Carmelle Allyza Collado' and 'Ralph "Maki" William Datoon' to highlight the continued importance of civic participation and social responsibility in the Philippines' democratic process.

The reimagined "Ako ang Simula" music video stands as an important public service message to citizens approaching the Philippine elections that each person holds the ability to initiate meaningful change through the joint efforts of Sofronio and Star Magic talent singers. With this, it will be shown possibly after TV Patrol's flagship newscast on April 21st of this year, and it will be accessible on YouTube on the same night of a music video release.

You try to put on equal footing the truth-seekers and the fake news purveyors," [UP Journalism professor Danilo Arao] told ANC's Headstart.

But [Jonathan Corpus Ong, a professor of Global Digital Media at the University of Massachusetts] said Meta's pivot was most likely driven by the political climate in the US ahead of the new Trump administration.

A handful of Filipino politicians had previously spoken out against the "bias" of fact-checkers tapped by Facebook.

In 2021, Sen. Imee Marcos, during a Senate panel hearing, called out the two fact-checking partners of Facebook for being "anti-administration."

[Arao] also believes that the community notes model is not any better, and may even be more flawed.

Arao said Meta's platforms risk "[ending up] like X, where the dominant narrative would be disinformation" because, he said, of "relatively organized" players trying to influence online discourse.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in a statement denounced Meta for "turning its back on its partners and, more importantly, its responsibility to its users."

The union said the policy shift would make it easier for those in power to carry out influence operations ahead of the Philippines' midterm elections in May.

Bantay Halalan 2024 Seminar reflection

Being lured to the opportunity to hear Ms. Sandra Aguinaldo's talk, one of the journalist I am looking up to, I eagerly attended the seminar even through virtual conferencing. Interestingly, the seminar ended with me gaining valuable insights on the intricacies of the contemporary Philippine political landscape, deeply resonating with some of our lectures in POSC165, a political science course I am taking this semester. Moreover, the discussion in the seminar also highlighted how misinformation can be very lethal especially as the elections are near, and the role of citizen journalism on empowering political awareness and fostering informed voters.

With the 2025 elections coming up, the seminar, “Political Reportage in the Age of Disinformation” last November 25th highlighted the importance for the masses to encourage meaningful conversations about politics, the role and responsibilities of the elected leaders, and collaborate with other stakeholders to protect the country’s democracy, as Ma'am Theia emphasized.

It is no doubt that the Philippines is a great victim of misinformation as greatly manifested during the campaign period during the 2022 elections. The great exposure and acknowledgement of the presence of disinformation, fake news, and even historical distortion in the Philippine media landscape are still not enough to combat its negative effects among Filipinos. Hence, seminars like this one that is hosted by both Department of Development Journalism (DDJ) and the Department of Development Broadcasting and Telecommunication (DDBT) remains relevant and essential more than ever to provide impactful actions on combatting distortion of information for the advantage of the influential ones. With this seminar, I am deeply considering to lend a hand and volunteer for the reportage of Bantay Halalan for the 2025 elections.
