When you're Haitian, January 1st is a double holiday! Not only is it the start of a new year, but it's also the anniversary of the day the Haitians gained independence from the French! This double holiday means goal-setting, drinking alcohol, and enjoying lots and lots of squash soup and other Haitian cuisines.
For this double holiday, our main character Pierre, along with his family, his boyfriend Jordan, and their friends are ringing in the New Year with a good old-fashioned Haitian party; that means loud music, lots of laughter, and delicious food. As Jordan and his and Pierre's friends take part in Pierre's culture, they come to learn that there's no other party quite like a Haitian party.

Earthquake Aftermath in Port au Prince
"I was sitting down at the house when it started to rock then blocks and wood started falling, Romario broke his leg, Mum grabbed us all and we got out all except my oldest brother Emanual. He was trapped. We weren't sure if he was alive or dead but we kept looking for him. Then my mother and Emanuel heard each other. He called out, 'Mamma I'm alive,' Mum told everybody she could find that he was alive, journalists, aid workers rescue workers, After 11 days rescuers ( an Israeli SAR) pulled him out, my mother collapsed from joy."

Americans must followed the time honoured tradition of treating every Carribean person like shit, Hatians by far the worst 🫡
People from the caribbean-latinsphere always have shit to say but haitians stay winning anyway !! 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇭🇹
#im gonna call my family up and make them replace the miami cuban diaspora with haitians 😤😤 cuban americans need to be taught a lesson#coming from an american born girl - im tired of hearing shit about haitians from other black people especially black americans

what does it say about a person that their immediate response to the spread of dehumanizing rhetoric against a vulnerable population is to repeat a joke from a movie? does this catchphrase activism indicate genuine allyship?

Apparently I need to read more black theory lol
Anyways if anyone wants to read…some thoughts on where antiblackness (particularly in Latin America) comes from and how it intersects with the US:
Dismantling Anti-Blackness Together [from NACLA]
Anti-Blackness In Latinx Countries Is Systemic And Reinforced By Deliberate Cultural Policy [from Afro Punk]
Race and Representation by Michael D Harris
The Bolsonaro Election, Antiblackness, and Changing Race Relations in Brazil [from U of A]
Child of the Dark by Carolina Maria de Jesus
And You, Why Are You Black? by Rubén H. Bermúdez (it’s mostly pictures of u don’t wanna read)
Racial Innocence by Tanya Katerina Hernandez
Silencing the Past by Michel-Rolph Trouillot
#im done#agree to disagree#and to be clear I am Dominican American with only Black friends I’ve had to educate most of my black American friends on this#I too used to think the same things#and I studied African history and am an author who writes on Blackness and continues to study it#I’m not new to this#all of Dominican history of antiblackness circles back to HAITI not the US - they suckle the USs teet bc they HATE Haiti that much#when Dominicans are being antiblack it is not due to American ideas it is bc they live where the Haitian revolution happened#I have Black American family members I have black Caribbean family members I have African family members#again if u would like some books I’ll be over here#I truly meant no disrespect#I literally agreed with you beloved idk what more there is to say

Unless you're litterally being held at gunpoint there's no excuse. No one in their right mind would want to become a murderer or participate in the Legal Murder Institution in the name of financial stability. If someone put a gun on my hand and told me that if I shoot a number of people I will have my education and future guaranteed I would just not do it. I'd rather struggle and have a harder life and killing someone else. But you need to recognize the "someone else" in question as an equal to understand that, you need to have an actual interest in seeing the other person as someone just like you, and at that point that's just personal responsability. Being critical of the State is a decision you can make. You're not trapped within the confines of your culture and the hegemonic system is never fully waterproof, the leaks are there you just need to actually care to find them.
Usamericans should be more anti-war actually. They should be straight up insulting marines and shutting down weapon factories, 60s anti-war protests kind of shit. I'm sorry for pontificating from down here but the US military-industrial complex is currently supplying a genocide, and this is not a new thing, the US has sold weapons to Saudi Arabia to starve millions of Yemenis. And though some people think it's not the point, it Is also true that there are trillions upon trillions of dollars that could be spent in anything else that go to the black hole of corruption (and call it for what it is, corruption) that is the Pentagon. Any of those resources could be destined to literally any other activity and be better spent.
I'm talking full contempt here. You should outright be HATING the military. Instead of lining up to watch Top Gun you should see it as a glorification of a fucking killing machine that serves imperial interests, enriches megacorporations and supports genocided. For the love of God be more angry about it. Goddamn.
#also: there are options#i'm not gonna pretend studying aboard is easy but i have foreign friends studying here in argentina whose families strugtle much more than#the average usamerican family#and the language barrier is no excuse because we have brazilian and haitian students working their asses off for their dreams#i'm not saying usamericans should come to argentina to study (though it would really enrich their society imo) i'm saying literally everyone#else found a way to have free education that doesn't include harming others#but no. killing arab kids is easier

Never forget the winter where I spent most of my time spiraling due to being gaslight over what our family did (voudou and palo) and i was arguing with my guides over who they really were so the did a "test" away from my mom's side on just my dad (whos very clairvoyant but very much a skeptic) and he gave me a funky music cd and I just about had it 😭😆
