Rules for the Japanese National Team- written by Iwaizumi Hajime, Athletic Trainer

Hinata, Kageyama, Atsumu, and Bokuto are no longer allowed within 50 feet of the kitchen, if you want to eat, you can starve or beg someone else to make food for you.

Bokuto and Kuroo are no longer allowed to be left alone for more than 2 minutes at a time. Also pringles are banned you guys are athletes that shouldn’t be eating this junk anyways.

Whoever locks Oikawa and Ushijima in a closet together can pay for any damages caused

Kageyama is not allowed to play truth or dare-he’s too easily influenced

If you call Yaku short, I���m not helping you recover from the damages caused

Suna is not allowed to blackmail the coach to get out of extra practice it doesn’t end well for anyone

Aran is not allowed to room with Atsumu or Suns in the Olympic village because this poor man has suffered enough

I don’t care how good of an idea it seems, no one is allowed to listen to Houshimi after 2 am

Sakusa is banned from bleaching other peoples rooms no matter how bad they stink- still technically an invasion of privacy

Kuroo is not allowed to try and convince new recruits that they should give him money

Atsumu is not allowed to use his brother as a body double to get out of practice

Ushijima and Kageyama aren’t allowed to give interviews together without a third person present

Bokuto is not allowed to give interviews with other people

Hinata and Kageyama aren’t allowed to teach children because no one actually understands what they’re saying

If you get caught doing something stupid you are not allowed to call Officer Daichi Sawamura to bail you out that is still illegal and he doesn’t even work in Tokyo

Suna and Oikawa are to be kept away from each other at all costs

Atsumu and Oikawa can hang out with each other only if they stop arguing over who’s kageyamas favorite

No secret handshakes allowed

Glitter bombs are only allowed if glitter does not get on Iwaizumi

If anyone asks if Iwaizumi is a babysitter the answer is legally no

The first person to convince the administration that Iwaizumi deserves a raise will get free food for a month

Iwaizumi is what many would call a Superdad. When he wore the holster with his toddler strapped to his chest, it looked like he was always meant to carry his son.

He looked no less natural in his dadness when he entered the gym one morning, greeting all the athletes on Japan’s national volleyball team and smirking when his baby made sounds that sounded much like they one day would be the same words he said.

The cooing from the athletes was immediate. “Good morning, tiny Iwa,” Hinata said in a babylike voice, not even greeting the actual trainer, while Bokuto made kissy sounds with his hands clutched together to contain the cuteness aggression.

“You brought backup,” Suna joked, holding the baby’s hand and shaking it, a tiny smile on his face.

“We will be doing circle practice today, let’s get started on setting up the stations!” He instructed, splitting everyone into random groups and making them set up each station for working out a different muscle or volleyball drill.

Usually, they would be in the gym with all the workout equipment, where he would definitely never bring his precious son. However, they would be in the big hall and do mixed practices like this once a week to give the muscles a more varied workout.

The athletes’ jaws fell loose when they saw Iwa put the toddler down on a baby blanket at one station, handing him a toy he liked before looking at them and resting his hands on his hips. “The babysitting station. Every time he cries, I’m adding another round.”

Hoshiumi’s laughter rang through the room and Kageyama’s gulp was practically audible, as he made eye contact with Ushijima who looked just as nervous. Meanwhile, Komori and Suna were grinning at the end of the lineup, already plotting to sabotage this baby’s first words.

They got started on the training, and Iwaizumi did his best to pay attention to all the stations while also keeping a keen eye on his baby. They were doing 2 minutes on each station, and the cute toddler pouted every time his babysitter changed, while the athletes cooed and tried to convince him not to cry.

It was going well until Sakusa and Yaku got there, one of the last groups before they would get a break. While Yaku held the boy and enjoyed trying to get him to walk, Sakusa stayed as far away as possible. Baby Iwa held his hands out for Sakusa, transfixed on his curly hair and begging to be transferred to the more reluctant babysitter. Yaku, a bit insulted that he wasn’t the favourite and also annoyed that Sakusa was so prickly, started yelling at the Jackal. Result? Baby. Crying.

Iwaizumi laughed, jogging over to pick his son up, predicting he’d want some food soon anyway. “That’s another round, guys!”

He could hear the athletes yelling at the last babysitters as he walked over to his bag, fishing out a bottle before turning back to them.

“Get back to it!”

whumptober day 10: slurred words

kageyama hears it, rather than sees it.

they're playing against italy, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of spectators dressed in either country's colors. kageyama raises his hands, blinded by the familiar overhead stadium light, familiar yet oppressive at the same time. he tosses to the left. a triple block. bokuto goes for an uber cut shot, but the libero saves it. the setter sends it to the right. kageyama joins suna and bokuto for the block. the ball ricochets off his fingertips and flies to the side.

"follow!" his voice joins the chorus. kageyama is running back into position, sees a flash of orange after the ball. it arcs beautifully back toward him, and he goes for a quick down the middle. suna delivers, his spike going untouched. point to japan.

kageyama lands and nods at suna. he turns toward where hinata is, a compliment on his lips when-

he isn't there. he's sprawled on the floor, #10 bold across his fallen back. coach is crouched beside him, along with iwaizumi. the courtside medics hurry to the scene. kageyama runs.

"what happened?" he hears bokuto ask.

"landed head first after that save," is yaku's response. his teammates gather, but kageyama ignores them, heart thumping, breaths short.

"shou!" he slides to his knees in the huddle, iwaizumi graciously giving him space. the medic carefully rolls hinata onto his back, eyes squeezed shut, low groan escaping between his lips. kageyama leans forward. "shou, can you hear me?"

an unfocused eye opens, the barest smile curving his lips. "tobio..."

"it's me. i'm here." he touches his hand, their fingers rough and slick with sweat. "how's your head?"

"m'fine...just a lil' headache..."

iwaizumi frowns. "you're not fine. we need to take you to the infirmary immediately and get you checked out properly." more medics arrive, bringing a stretcher. he stands and gestures for kageyama to move back. "you're no help to him right now. move aside."

"he's my partner, i can't leave him," kageyama snaps.

"kageyama-"

"kageyama." coach speaks, the two of them snapping to attention. "let the medics take a look at him. iwaizumi is right; there's nothing you can do for him right now."

kageyama snaps his mouth shut, bows his head in apology. "i'll swap you out with miya," coach adds. "any player whose heart isn't in the game won't help the team."

they move back to the court, watching the medics carry hinata out. kageyama takes the bench, miya patting his shoulder to take his place, ushijima following. "shoyo will be fine," hoshiumi declares. "he's taken bigger falls. this is nothing." kageyama says nothing in response; instead of comfort, all he feels is a sense of dread trickling down his spine.

it takes four sets, but japan walks away victorious. kageyama doesn't stay to celebrate, hurrying to the infirmary with iwaizumi as soon as the final point is scored. it's down the corridor, away from the cameras and spectators, quiet yet hollow. iwaizumi opens the door.

"he has a concussion," one of the medics explain to them. "i advise letting him rest for now, until the team is ready to leave the venue. he won't be able to play until his doctor clears him."

iwaizumi nods and says something back, but kageyama has moved around them to kneel beside the cot, where hinata rests. someone had taken off his kneepads, compression sleeves, and socks and shoes. the orange crow pendant usually tucked beneath his collar is out. kageyama reaches for his own, a dark blue crow. "shou," he whispers, using his other hand to brush his fingers. "you awake?"

it takes a moment before his eye opens, slightly clouded but still retaining its beautiful shade of orange. "hi, yama," hinata whispers back. "did you see my save?"

his concern is overwhelmed by his frustration, quiet anger sparking his words. "you're still the same reckless dumbass from high school. what good is getting yourself injured, to the point that you can't play?"

hinata's brow crinkles slightly, a faint frown on his lips. "i'm sorry. it was in the moment- i wasn't thinking-"

"if you think too much, you'll get a fever," kageyama snorts. "have some common sense at least, you dumbass. so what you can't save the ball? we'll just take it back. together." with that out of the way, he melts, the tension keeping him upright dissolving, to the point that he falls against the cot. "you hit your head pretty badly. we're only getting older, you can't sleep it off and be fine the next day."

"i don't wanna hear about getting older from you."

"then, who? iwaizumi-san?"

"oh, in that case..." a spark of mirth ignites in his gaze. "we can talk about it, but only how we'll still be playing volleyball 'till we're geezers."

kageyama lets out a breath, flooded by affection for his partner. "seriously, don't do that again, okay? i don't want to think about not being able to play together, after all this time on separate teams." and yet, once the vnl is over, they'll be back on opposite sides of the world, oceans apart, tethered by not only for their love for each other but volleyball. in the end, though, it'll be their love that'll unite them, whenever that'll be.

one of the assistant coaches tells them that they're about to leave, and how bokuto already loaded their bags for them. kageyama takes his jacket off to put over hinata's shoulders, piggybacking him down the corridor after iwaizumi toward the exit. hinata's head rests against his shoulder, eyes closed, breathing slow as he drifts off. "love you, idiot."

"love you too, dumbass."

Yahaba Shigeru’s Stats

IVE MADE A DISCOVERY! yahaba (seijoh pinch server) and himekawa (tsubaikhara pinch server) have almost EXACTLY the same stats? the only difference is that yahaba has one more point in power. this makes sense cuz himekawa’s ceiling serve is more focused on the gimmick of going up so high—plus he’s a year younger—whereas yahaba has a more regular jump serve, so they kind of even out to equal anyway.

this is a really interesting parallel, as both of them come in for a pinch server and can’t ultimately get enough points for their respective teams. but yahaba’s role is more focused on his encouragement/admonishment of kyoutani, and he also seems to be more confident than himekawa, whose mini-arc revolves around his nerves. (but i think himekawa still gets more points for his team in total?)

in making this discovery, i found some other characters with similar stats:

nobuyuki kai from nekoma is almost the same, except he has one more point in stamina than yahaba does. nekoma’s whole thing is how they have a bunch of solid all-around players, but not a lot of stand-out stars. their average player stats end up being 18.86 according to that one reddit post, so yahaba (whose stats add up to 18) honestly might fit into the team pretty well.

daishou suguru has the same technique, intelligence, and speed—it’s interesting to see how they use this differently tho, since daishou uses this to get in his opponents’ heads with taunts and manipulation. i wish daishou was a second year cuz i’d love to see captain yahaba let loose a little in a match against him. (although futakuchi is a close match in attitude)

moniwa has the same speed, technique, & intelligence too, and a similar array in the other stats. he seems like a similar captain to what yahaba would likely be in his third year: someone with good leadership skills, but still a kind of average player overall. (in total yahaba’s stats being 18 vs moniwa’s 19. it would make sense that yahaba could get 1 more point somewhere by his 3rd year, so i feel like they’d both be the same skill level next year.) moniwa’s encouragement also stays with the team even past his retirement, and this is his main role in the narrative, just like yahaba + kyoutani. i can honestly see yahaba shaping up to be a very similar captain :)

kuroo actually shares similar strengths/weaknesses—they both have 4s in technique/intelligence, 3 in power, 2 in jumping, but kuroo has 1 more in speed and stamina respectively. he could also be another example of the kind of captain yahaba might live up to be :,)) so kuroo is stronger overall but his strengths are in the same areas

kind of interesting that yahaba shares more in common with other teams’ captains than his idol oikawa? really shows how he has HUGE shoes to fill but if he was being compared with these captains, he’d seem much more capable and competent 🤔

overall, yahaba is a really very average player. along with the first year kindaichi, he has the lowest total stats on seijoh’s team (with their team average being 20.21) and considering his 18 against oikawa’s TWENTY-FOUR, it’s no wonder he’s worried about filling those shoes.

none of yahaba’s important moments really focus on his skills on the court. he’s basically invisible as a setter in the practice match with karasuno. when he sets for kyoutani, that point is about how they’re working together as a team, not highlighting any particularly good setting from him. all of yahaba’s strengths seem to be in his off-the-court behavior, which is a total contrast to oikawa, who’s a monster on the court but very childish outside of the game. yahaba has definitely picked up oikawa’s leadership skills, but there’s not a lot going for him other than a fairly decent jump serve. this could definitely work out if he re-structured his team though to work more like nekoma (make sure every member is solid esp with defense instead of highlighting specific players). id also say they could work like dateko, but tbh i’m not sure if seijoh could make the iron wall work, and futakuchi is def a stronger captain than moniwa was.

so tl;dr, yahaba is a very very average player, though he has the potential to be a pretty good captain :)
