Finally put a small altar together for my deities. I haven't practiced actively since I was in college, so much of what I had is gone. But I'm proud of the pieces I've scraped together 💖

who are the chthonic deities?
HADES: the god of the dead, riches, and King of the Underworld

DEMETER: some sources consider the goddess of agriculture and fertility a chthonic deity because of her relation to the earth and as Persephone's mother
HEKATE: goddess of magic, crossroads, necromancy, and ghosts, she is a close companion of Persephone
TARTARUS: the primordial god of the abyss and personification of the deepest level of the Underworld

Casual reminder that "feminist" retellings of Persephone's myth that make their relationship quirky awkward Haides x Overprotected sheltered Persephone are in fact, not feminist.
The myth is already feminist.

Oh graceful yet powerful Hades,
The God of the Underworld and Afterlife,
The one who rules our deeds, the one who we
meet eventually at the end of our life,
He who is so great, powerful and fierce,
He who makes our life sincere
Oh Hades, help us all in death,
Our tombs are not carved with gold,
But you, Oh so divine, could help us in wealth.

about being a devotee
since i started seeing the gods literally everywhere, devoting myself feels so natural and not the way i tought it should be. with social media especifically tiktok, being younger than i am now i used to see devotion as such a distant thing and absolutely impossible for me.
but fortunately this has changed!
seeing queen persephone in the flowers that grow through concrete, remembering king hades whenver i smell fresh coffee, loki in the laughter i share with my students or comforting them when they feel like outcasts.

I think of Hades often. He's such a comforting presence. I would've never imagined myself practicing hellenism a few years ago, but here I am. Honestly, I feel so safe this way. I know Hades is looking out for me (╥﹏╥)

Ignore the mask filter, I don't like showing my full face, but this is the current fit, I'm out in public, and I've never worn a headcover like this in public.
I'm super nervous, but I saw one of my buddies, and he immediately cracked a joke to make me feel better. (I'm a Star Wars fan, and he called me darth sidious lol)
But yea, I'm officially veiling in a way closer to what I want outside of work :)

some mentions of Hades in historical works
HESIOD'S THEOGONY:
" In front of that stand the echoing halls Of mighty Hades and dread Persephone, Underworld gods, and a frightful, pitiless Hound stands guard, and he has a mean trick: When someone comes in, he fawns upon him, Wagging his tail and dropping his ears, But he will not allow anyone to leave— He runs down and eats anyone he catches Leaving Persephone’s and Hades’ gates. "
THE ORPHIC HYMNS
" You dwell below the earth, O' strong-spirited one, a meadow in Tartarus, thick-shaded and dark. Sceptered Chthonic Zeus, please accept this sacrifice, O' Plouton, holder of the keys to the whole earth. To mankind you give the wealth of the year’s fruits, yours is the third portion, earth, queen of all, seat of the gods, mighty lap of mortals. Your throne rests on a dark realm, the realm of distant, of untiring, of windless, and of impassive Hades; it does rest on gloomy Acheron, the river who girds the roots of the earth. All-receiver, master of death, master of mortals, host of many, Euboulos, you once took as your bride pure Demeter’s daughter: you tore her away from the meadow, and through the sea you carried her to an Attic cave upon your steeds— it was the district of Eleusis, where the gates to Hades are. You alone were born to judge deeds obscure and conspicuous. Holiest and illustrious ruler of all, frenzied god, you delight in the respect and in the reverence of your worshippers. I summon you, come with favor, come with joy to the initiates. "

Making mistakes in your practice is entirely natural, even expected. You cannot years of practicing something without ever once fucking something up accidentally. The gods are well aware that humans make mistakes (they even make mistakes themselves; divinity isn't immune to fucking Up accidentally, and that's ok), and boy do mistakes come naturally to us.
In fact, you know what I did for the first two months of worshipping Lord Haides? I made coffee for him nearly every day, and each time I did it was wrong, but I had no clue since I don't drink coffee and never had to make it before. I literally put the coffee grounds in the cup, boiled water, and stirred the water with the grounds, as if the grounds would just mix in with the water. Yeah, it was super gross and an awful way to make coffee, but Lord Haides is still a god I worship and doesn't hate me over it. It's actually something I look back on and chuckle at these days. Learn to find the humor in your own mistakes rather than beating yourself up over it.
