Hagfish are jawless fish in the superclass Agnatha, along with lampreys. They are relatively common in the deep sea.  Many species of hagfish are notorious for their slimy skin. When disturbed, they ooze proteins from slime glands in their skin that respond to water by becoming a slimy outer coating, which expands into a huge mass of slime in just minutes to deter predators. They also devour carcasses on the seafloor from the inside out.

The Pacific Hagfish belongs to a group that is the only known animals with a skull but no vertebral column. These guys work hard as the cleanup crew of the ocean, breaking down waste that falls to the sea floor. The third Wednesday in October is Hagfish Day! Today we celebrate this animal, which isn't quite fish, isn't quite invertebrate, but holy cow, does it make a lot of slime. So much slime, in fact, that it can choke its predators' gills. Air breathers, like seals, turtles and others, though, consider the slime to be a slick alfredo sauce mixed with yummy protein! Speaking of yummy protein, people in Asia think hagfish is so delicious that they overfished their stock. A fishery opened in Oregon to sate the slimy appetite. One day over the summer, a truckload of hagfish dumped out on the 101 Freeway! This caused a backup on the road for miles—traffic that I was caught in—on my way to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where I looked in their tiny tank of hagfish. Little did I know that they were sprawled out all over the freeway I was just on! Here's to you, slime eel! And if you're wondering, Hagfish Day was started by the WhaleTimes.org.
