Going a little further out this week and heading out to Hackney Wick where we went to try out a BBQ place that we'd heard good things about; Hon's BBQ. They have what I can only describe as a weird pre-ordering system where you can put in your order online the day before. We were unfortunately not that organized so just turned up on the day. The place is in a sort of mini warehouse which it shares with a coffee shop and a bar. When we went to order, we were told that there were a few pre-orders ahead of us so it might be a bit of a wait but that if any of them didn't show, it'd be quicker. We headed upstairs and had a drink from the bar while we waited for the food.

Eventually, after about 30 minutes or so, our buzzer buzzed and we headed on downstairs to pick up our food. We'd ordered a smashed cucumber salad which was refreshing but to be honest, a little bit bland. We felt that this could've benefitted from letting it sit and marinate for a bit longer than it had been given. To be fair though, the rest of the food looked pretty full of flavour so maybe a bit of contrast wouldn't be the worst thing!

This was a single beef rib and came with a szechuan pepper chilli marinade. This was pretty special. The meat was falling off the bone and super tender. The beef with the szechuan peppercorns and the chilli all went together incredibly well. This was worth the wait!

The other thing we ordered was the platter which starting top left and going clockwise had beef cheek, pulled lamb, an asian slaw and peach tea glazed pork belly chunks. All the meat was really well done but the pork belly in particular was delicious with that slightly sweet glaze and also the beef cheek that had this amazing smokiness to it and was unbelievably tender. It was also pretty surreal to be eating BBQ with rice!

Hackney Wick is definitely a little further out of the way than we normally venture but the area is actually pretty nice with some really interesting cafes and new restaurants. You also have the nearby Olympic Park which is nice for a stroll. If you do come around here though, and you have the time to wait for a bit if you haven't pre-ordered, this place is definitely worth checking out!
