Hey Hope! Is it true you’re from Atlanta ? If so, do you have any restaurant recommendations in the city ? I’m going in September for a concert and I’m really bad finding places without recs 🙈

yes! ooooo i would definitely recommend any of these:

• Ruby Chow’s: Asian Fusion restaurant. Atmosphere is great and the food is delicious.

• Dancing Goats Coffee: Great little coffee place. They have a lot of nice, unique flavors. Fun fact! it’s the coffee shop Simon and his friends go to in Love Simon.

• The Vortex: Really delicious Americana food with creative drinks and menu options. The front of the restaurant is so cool, and it’s located in Little Five Points which is somewhere I’m sure you’d love to walk around. It’s one of the more artistic and eccentric areas of Atlanta. A lot of cool local shops and eateries and vintage stores etc.

• Little 5 Corner Tavern: If you like Little Five enough, come back for drinks and tapas at this pub! I would recommend getting rooftop seating because it’s a cute little setup with twinkling lights overlooking the area and a cozy environment.

• La Hacienda: Mexican food! My friend turned me onto this place awhile ago. Her and her friends go there all the time, and for good reason. It’s very laidback, fairly reasonably priced mexican cuisine. Their margaritas are delicious but dangerous so watch out lmao

• Beetlecat: If you like seafood, this is the place to go. it’s an upscale seafood/oyster bar but it isn’t too bad price-wise. Really love the atmosphere here at night. Definitely go for a late dinner.

• Bread + Butterfly: In the same area as Beetlecat! But, it’s a french-inspired cuisine. The breakfast + brunch options are what make this restaurant incredible imo. The staff are always super friendly and sociable too.

• Fellini’s Pizza: If you just want some greasy, cheesy, yummy pizza, this is the place to go. there’s tons of pizza places in atlanta but Fellini’s really just hits different. ESPECIALLY after a concert or a long day walking around/hanging out in the city.

• Grindhouse Killer Burgers: Speaking of greasy food, this is the best spot for a burger imo. It’s delicious, filling, and the prices are decent. They also have a ton of options to make your perfect burger (including vegetarian + vegan options!)

• My Parent’s Basement: Really sick comic book store/taproom. Good bar foods and a really cool atmosphere. There’s comics, pinball machines, records etc. all wedged inbetween a bar! It’s fun for a night out because they stay open pretty late.

• Chai Pani: Great indian street food. My friend brought me here for my birthday dinner one year. I haven’t gone back, but it was delicious from what I remember. They have great tapas, and the atmosphere is super cozy.

• Parkgrounds: Another solid coffee shop! The area is very laidback too. Try to eat/drink outside. it’s a dream

• Thumbs Up Diner: if you love diner food like i do, this is a 12/10!

friends to lovers! there’s something so heartwarming about the idea of a love that was always there but still managed to grow and bloom so naturally?

50 — what’s your dreamhouse?

it’s either a mexican hacienda or an hacienda inspired house; with high ceilings with wooden beams, arches along the garden lining, terracotta tiles, an interior garden in the center of the house, wooden doors, colorful facades and old steel windows. i would have a lot of bougainvillea trees and some big cactuses growing along the facade and some fruit trees in the interior garden, and a mexican inspired kitchen (with talavera tiles lining the backsplash and huge windows so the sun can come in!). i would have an art studio and a library and would definitely dedicate a wall to pictures and paintings of the alhambra alone hehe. it would be something kind of like this.

RWRB Study Guide, Chapter 9

Too close to the sun (239): A reference to the myth of Icarus; his father built him wings so that they could escape from a tower they were trapped in. Upon gaining his freedom for the first time in years, Icarus celebrated by flying as high as he could. The sun melted the wax on his wings, and they fell apart, leaving him to plummet to his death.

Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens (239): Alexander Hamilton was an American politician, and John Laurens was a revolutionary fighter and abolitionist. Every biography of either of them is like “yeah wow they sure were GOOD FRIENDS” or “They had a ROMANTIC FRIENDSHIP” (an actual phrase I just read). 

Chernow’s biography (240): The most popular biography of Alexander Hamilton; the one that the 2016 musical Hamilton is based on. He concludes that “at the very least, we can say that Hamilton developed something like an adolescent crush on his friend”.

King George III (242): The king against whom the American colonies revolted.

Eliza (243): Eliza Schuyler Hamilton was Alexander Hamilton’s wife. The pair absolutely adored each other, and according to at least one of Hamilton’s letters to Laurens, she was conscious of and completely alright with their relationship (and also maybe down for a three-way).

Allen Ginsberg to a Peter Orlovsky (245): Allen Ginsberg was an American poet of the Beat movement, which was characterized by a dissatisfaction with 1950s America. Peter Orlovsky was an actor and took up poetry after beginning his open relationship with Ginsberg. The pair continued this relationship until Ginsberg’s death in 1997.

Henry James to Hendrix C. Andersen* (247): Henry James was an American/British writer whose works often explore the contrast and overlap between those two cultures. Hendrix C. Andersen a sculptor (known for a sculpture of Jacob, um... “wrestling” an angel). The two met in Rome in 1899, and James immediately bought a bust sculpted by Andersen, which he placed above his mantle, declaring “I shall have him constantly before me as a loved companion and friend”. (more, including a deeply gay love letter)

“Loco in Acapulco” (248): A 1988 song by the Four Tops about partying in Acapulco, a Mexican beach city. (listen here)

Chambray (249): Chambray is a fabric native to South France, it is lightweight and made of a weave of light colored and white threads.

“Here You Come Again” (249): A 1977 country/pop song recorded/performed by Dolly Parton, about a lover coming back into her life. (listen here)

Mexican Coke (250): Coca-Cola made in Mexico is typically made with cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup, and many believe that gives it a more natural taste.

Lake LBJ (250): The history behind this lake is pretty well covered in the book, but it is popular for boating and water skiing because of its normally constant water level (meaning it is not significantly impacted by things like rainfall or other weather issues). 

“Jumbo”** (250): LBJ apparently had a sizeable “little” friend. He tried to have the White House shower altered so to have a stream shooting directly onto it. He would show it to people all the time. He asked to have his pants tailored to accommodate it.  

Henry VIII*** (250): Henry VIII is a British king best known for taking six wives, most of whom he either killed or divorced after they failed to give birth to sons. He invented the Church of England so that he could legally divorce his first wife and it went downhill from there. 

Strawberry daiquiris (250): A strawberry daiquiri is a mix of rum, sugar, and citrus. They are often frozen and are a popular summer drink.

Hacienda school of home decor (251): “Hacienda” is the Spanish word for an estate; this style is typically defined by high ceilings, open, arched doorways, and sprawling floor plans. “Hacienda” homes are associated with Mexico and the Southwest United States, and are generally designed as cozy outdoor/indoor spaces.

Pemberton Heights (252): One of Austin’s wealthiest and most historic neighborhoods.

Chente (252): Vincente ”Chente” Fernández Gómez is a Mexican actor and musician known as “El Rey de la Música Ranchera" (The King of Ranchera Music). He started his career playing for tips on the street, but has since risen to stardom. (listen here and here)

Cotija and crema (253): Cotija is a Mexican cheese, and Mexican crema is a thickened cream often used as a topping for Mexican foods. 

Elotes (253): Elote, or Mexican street corn, is a popular summer dish made with sweet corn covered in crema, cotija, chili powder, and a variety of other toppings.

Candy-ass (254): A wimp or person who’s not especially tough.

“Not bad for a European” (254): The general stereotype in the US is that European folks, especially English folks, are generally smart, but not very tough.

Santa Maria (256): Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus and greatest of all Catholic saints.

Tamales with salsa verde (256): Tamales are a Mexican dish made of a corn dough wrapped and steamed in corn husks, and salsa verde is a tomatillo-based salsa. Tamales are often made with help from an assembly line of family members. 

Frijoles charros (256): Frijoles charros, or “cowboy beans”, are a Mexican dish made of pinto beans stewed with onions, garlic, bacon, and other elements such as meat, peppers, tomatoes, and cilantro.

Sangria (256): An alcoholic beverage from Spain made of red wine mixed with fruit.

Johnny Cash (256): An American musician who began his career as a country singer, but branched out into rock and gospel as well. He was known for his humility and his free prison concerts, and for context within the book, June is named after his wife. (listen here and here)

Selena (256): Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was a Mexican-American singer/ songwriter/ model/ spokesperson who is known for catapulting Tejano or Tex-Mex music into the mainstream. (listen here and here)

Fleetwood Mac (256): Fleetwood Mac is a British-American pop rock band formed in 1967. (listen here and here)

“Annie’s Song” (256): A John Denver song written as an ode to his wife; she described it as “a love song [that] became a bit of a prayer”. (listen here)

Chile de árbol (257): A small, potent chili native to Mexico.

Jazz brunch (258): A brunch with a jazz trio playing in the background. They’re typically associated with older folks on vacation.

Migas (262): Mexican migas is a traditional breakfast dish made of a crispy tortilla with scrambled eggs on top. The Tex-Mex variation includes extra ingredients like onions, peppers, tomatoes, cheese, or salsa.

The heir and the spare (263): This refers to the idea that a king should have at least two sons: one to be the heir to his throne, and a backup “spare” to keep the kingdom from a succession war in case that first died.

ONE WEEK

While I work on the requests in my box I’m also writing a mini-series about exes Harry & Y/N who haven’t seen each other or spoken in years and a weeklong holiday that they both happen to be on.

Friday:

It was about to be the best week ever. A short holiday but with great purpose! It was Nick’s birthday and he had invited his closest group of friends to a week-long getaway in Cancun. He had been a bit skeptical when sending out the invites to Harry and Y/N, but he figured Harry would be too busy to come, it was a common occurrence and he took no offense because he understood and he made up for it well enough. However, when they both RSVP’d he figured he’d just keep that to himself and hope that nothing too chaotic occurred.

Here’s the deal; Harry and Y/N started seeing each other in 2015. She was a productions intern at BBC Radio, which is how they even met. Once she was more integrated with Nick and his friends she became a more familiar face and after several months of talking, texting, and secret rendezvous, Harry asked her to be his girlfriend. The timing had never been more perfect in his life; the band was on hiatus and he was just relaxing for some time, working on his own. When her internship ended in May, Y/N spent the Summer of 2016 jumping around from place to place as Harry worked on the filming of Dunkirk and his album, and everyone was sure the relationship was going to last. But then Harry immersed himself into his debut album and left to Jamaica and Y/N had to start getting ready to go back to school in England. Despite this, they managed to work through the distance, but then Harry started touring. Communication was inconsistent, they could hardly see each other between his touring and her school and new job at the BBC, and soon enough they were hardly even talking. It was late into 2017 when Y/N decided to break it off, it had to be over the phone, and they just had not spoken since. Harry was not very pleased with how she handled it; he thought maybe they could put forth a bit more effort, but she seemed to be done trying.

So yeah, Nick is a little worried to see her from a distance, coming to join them at the large table that’s been set out for brunch. Harry’d only just arrived an hour ago and as she comes closer she realizes that the person sitting across from Nick is Harry. He watches as her features change into a surprised expression before glaring at Nick. Once she arrives she politely says a big “Good morning!” To everyone before sitting at the far end of the table by Pixie. Just then he glances over to Harry who is staring in her direction looking completely taken back by her presence. Then he glances to Nick with the most pitiful look before reaching forward and taking a huge gulp of his mimosa and well, Nick does the same.

Harry was really surprised to see Y/N. She no longer worked at BBC radio, so he had no idea her and Nick were still even friends. Hearing her voice faintly from down the table was making this weird feeling stir in the pit of his stomach. He was confused, but slightly happy that she still had these people as her friends. He can’t say that he hasn’t missed her or her friendship, they worked pretty well when they were under less pressure, dare he say the best relationship he’d had, but things just got complicated with their lives and that drove what to her seemed to be an irreparable wedge between them. Harry also felt sad because just nine months after they’d broken up she had gotten engaged. If he were to be honest with himself, he hadn’t even dated anyone else because he hadn’t even processed what they’d been through with how inundated in work and projects he had been lately. He just hoped this week would go smoothly.

Harry had lots to think about, but not to be a debbie-downer, he did his thinking with a good book as they all hung out around the pool of the little hacienda they’d rented out. Y/N would steal glances because he was incredibly handsome, but her irritation with Nick seemed to trump that when she saw him and Mesh finally lay bak on some chaises.

“I could kill you.” She said, planting herself beside him and Mesh stood quickly, not wanting to be part of this tiff.

“Look, I always invite him and he’s always busy. I really didn’t think he’d show.”

“You could’ve warned me, Nick.” She said again and he rolled his eyes.

“Look, he just told me last week that he was coming. He arrived this morning, so it was a bit last minute and honestly, you’re both adults, now just don’t talk to each other if you’re both eager to continue this awkward and unnerving silence, yeah?” He said and she huffed.

“I’m sorry… I’ll be good I just- s’been so long and I mean… we both know that I feel shit about how things ended and just seeing him brings it all back and I just wasn’t ready to deal with all that guilt.” She elaborated.

“That’s why you don’t do long distance breakups, babe. It’s bloody awkward.”

“Yeah.” She mumbled, “Fuck me.” She whispered before taking a swig of the cocktail she’d been having.

Nick was 100% in the right. She’d been hasty about it all and really, he and Harry were friends first and he was under no obligation to tell her about Harry’s plans to attend his birthday holiday. So she just decided to get back in the pool and take it easy. It was just one week. One, short little week. Really, she could get away with not talking to him. Of course, she’d be polite and all, but she didn’t have to have any meaningful interactions if she didn’t want to. She could do this.

“Hey, babe.” Alexa said as she sat on the edge of Harry’s chaise.

“Hiya.” He said, grateful that her outrageous sun hat was now providing him from some shade from the unforgiving sun.

“You doing alright?” She asked and he nodded, dog-earing the page he was on and setting his book on the ground.

“Yeah, m’good. I mean, besides the fact that my ex-girlfriend is swimming around 15 feet away from me all nonchalantly with my cold, beating heart in her hands.” He exaggerated and Alexa offered a lopsided grin, giggling a bit.

“That’s a bit much.”

“Is it?” He asked, brows raised and she gnawed at her lip a bit.

“Still hurts?” She asked more quietly and he nodded slightly.

“Just a bit. I think I’ve been so busy that I never really got a chance to sit down and properly sort through all those feelings. Like yeah, I’ve written about it a little and all, but I don’t think I’ve fully come to terms with how it ended and all.” He explained.

“Well, I mean, time and place, but this might be the only opportunity you have to talk to her about that and sort of get it off your chest.” She advised and he nodded.

“Yeah, like I want to, but I mean she’d moved on and it’s a bit embarrassing to be only one with an issue, you get me?”

“Of course, but we all take it at our own pace and honestly, for how you guys were before, the break up was shit.”

“Right, it’s like she’d already gone into the conversation having made up her mind about it.”

“Just wait until later and try and catch her alone and see if she’s willing to talk about it. If not, you tried and maybe you’ll get some peace of mind about something, yeah?”

“Yeah, you’re right.” He said offering a small smile and she returned it.

“Alright, babe. Love you.” She said, leaning in and kissing his cheek before standing and leaving him alone again.

He really needed to know what exactly had happened and why she just gave up on them. At one point he believed that he was going to marry Y/N. Once they were both a bit older and she was fine with UNI and settled he was gonna do it. Life just gets in the way sometimes and while they worked through it once, it seemed like she couldn’t get past it the second time and she just gave up. He shook his head and took a few calming, deep breaths aiming to release all of the negative emotions he was starting to feel, this was a holiday, for fuck’s sake. And she’d never been an unreasonable person, so he’d likely get a chance to talk to her about it all before they had to go. He was having a hard time not getting worked up about it so he hoisted himself up and headed towards the bar, smiling at the bar tender before ordering himself a paloma.

Being in the sun all day and swimming really takes it out of you. While they did lay out for a while, they did plenty of swimming and after a while of that you just get hungry. So everyone went to their own rooms to get showered and ready for dinner. The night was still rather warm, but it was paired with a nice breeze sweeping in from the Caribbean sea. The short walk to the outdoors dining area was no chore as the sun set in beautiful hues of orange and pink on the horizon. This place was absolutely breathtaking she thought as she finally got to the table. They were still waiting on Harry and Alexa, who came in stumbling a few minutes afterwards, giggling and gripping onto each other, clearly drunk.

Y/N smiled a bit at seeing him so carefree. She’d had the pleasure of looking after a drunk Harry. He wasn’t very messy, he was more boisterous and affectionate; very needy and a little careless. Drunk Harry really loved cuddles and he loved kisses and cheeky little squeezes and pets when no one was looking. He loved whispering in her ear how badly he wanted to taste her or be buried in her only for them to get to his (or hers) and for him to knock out in five minutes. Drunk Harry was sweeter than sober Harry, wearing his emotions on his sleeves, not really caring for the mysterious persona he’d created for himself for the world to see. He loved to tell her how pretty she was and how lucky he was to have met her.

Slowly, Y/N’s smile had disappeared into a small frown, her eyes glossed a little at the memories and she just cleared her throat before taking a sip of her wine and willing away the thoughts of him and of her together. He wasn’t hers anymore and she wasn’t his, it’s like the realization of what she’d lost hit her all over again and her food started tasting bad and her drinks weren’t strong enough. It hurt so much knowing what she’d lost.

It was a bit uncharacteristic of Harry to have as many drinks as he’d had, he was usually pretty great about pacing himself (mainly because he hates hangovers), but he was on holiday with people that he trusted and he was having a great time tanning and reading, and feeling like no one was bothering him. But as is the natural course of being under the influence of anything, the fun parts start to dwindle away as the company starts dwindling. It’s maybe only been half an hour since the rest of the people he’d stayed with had decided to go to bed. But there was one person in particular who wouldn’t leave his mind, not matter how hard he willed her away. Fucking Y/N.

She looked beautiful today, she always did. She was so carefree and seemed to be doing well. He frowned as he recalled that she was doing well, better than well, she was fucking engaged. Honestly, she’s far better than he’d ever been since their split. It wasn’t like it usually was, this time it hit him hard from the start because he never thought that’d she be the one to give up. He never thought that she’d break him and leave him all alone, just the thought of it pissed him off. It made him angry at her inability to stick it out just a bit longer. Was he jealous that she had moved on? Absolutely, his skin crawled just thinking about her with somebody else. Was he bitter that she seemed to be happier without him? Absolutely, so bitter in fact that for a moment he found himself wishing that her engagement would be called off and that he’d find someone as soon as it did. This break up was bringing out parts of him that he wasn’t too fond of.

These resentful and angry emotions were coming to the surface the longer he was alone and the more times he’s refill his shot glass with tequila. Before he even realized it he was bounding down the walkway of the hacienda they were staying at towards her room (he had overheard her telling Nick the number). He wouldn’t say he was belligerently drunk, but he was drunk enough to not run away from the things he was feeling. He was wasted enough to stare them, well her, in the face and give her a piece of his mind because he never got the chance to.  He pounded on the door with a heavy fist, once, twice, then three times. Then again, when there was no answer.

Y/N groaned as she dragged her feet towards the door, wondering who was disturbing her slumber at 2am. She huffed in irritation as another round of the pounding began. She was fully convinced Nick and Pixie were just pranking her or something, they tended to since she was the youngest out of the group. So she swung the door open, prepared for anything but what she saw. Waiting there, shirtless, face set in a grimace, standing a tad wobbly on his feet, with a bottle of tequila in his hands was Harry. Harry who she had been set on avoiding the whole week, was at her door and she was more awake than she’d been in a long time.

“Harry, what’re-”

“Fuck. You.” He stated simply and she frowned, confused with his intentions now.

“Sorry, what?” She tried to conceal the hurt that his words had branded in to her heart.

“You heard me, but f’ya need me t’say it again, I will. Gladly.” He slurred just a bit, “Fuck you, you fucking jerk. I can’t believe that you broke up with me over the phone after so much time together. After everything you know about me and what we’d been through together. Fuck you for giving up on me, on us! Fuck you for being stuck in my mind all this time and for stunting me and my ability to love anyone else. You pulled some fucking number on me, Y/N.” He chuckled bitterly, “I can’t believe I wanted to marry you. I can’t believe that I even considered a future with someone so selfish and cowardly as you are!” He scolded, “Y’know, you didn’t even have the decency to hear me out.” He shook his head, both of their eyes were welling up with tears now. “You were so quick to let me go and I was nowhere near prepared to end things between us. You didn’t give me a warning, you didn’t even give me a chance to try harder, you just ended it and I fucking hate you for tha-”

“The lack of communication, the inability to see each other, was that not enough of a warning that maybe we’d run our course?” She defended herself and he scoffed.

“Well I’m sorry for being such a fucking idiot to think that you loved me enough to work through it with me. Do you think it was easy for me? Do you think I enjoyed having to disconnect from you for a bit? Because it fucking sucks! It sucks when the person you’re so fucking in love with is thousands of miles away and is busy with a real fucking job and schoolwork and can’t talk when I’m free. It sucks when I’d have to see Mitch and Sarah all cuddled together when the person I wanted by my side wasn’t able to be there with me. It’s fucking hard for me too, but I thought it was worth, you were worth the wait and all the hard work. Apparently, I wasn’t worth it to you.” He bellowed and she was sobbing now.

“Harry, I’m sorry. I know I didn’t go about it the right way-”

“Then, to make matters worse you go and get engaged months later! How can you even excuse something like that? At what point had you stopped loving me? When did you just start stringing me along? God, when I heard about that I was so fucking angry! I am so fucking angry that you seem to be moving on just fine and I’m still stuck here wasting my time loving someone who never gave a fuck about me. So yeah, fuck you! Fuck your engagement! Fuck everything! And fuck me for being so stupid to think that you’d ever love me as much as I love you! I don’t even know why I still do.” He whispered sadly through his tears. He was so close to her face that she was panting, “Fuck.” He mumbled as he took a few steps back and just started walking off towards the beach. Y/N was left sobbing, shutting the door behind her and sliding down it softly. She should have never come.

I recently returned from a long Labor Day weekend in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had a blast! After my afternoon flight and checking in to my downtown hotel, my first stop was the Fish Fry at Lakefront Brewery. It’s a Milwaukee tradition! Of course I had to order some beer and cheese curds too. Afterwards, I enjoyed great tiki drinks and met an awesome couple at Foundation.

My second day began with a Cinnamon Toast Crunch cocktail and spicy Chilaquiles at The Original followed by a couple great breweries, Hacienda Beer Co. and Good City Brewing.

Then it was time to drive around Milwaukee in a cool cruiser with City Tours MKE.

My guide dropped me off at the Harley-Davidson Museum where there were a ton of bikers for Rally Week. It was really cool and definitely a must-see since the iconic motorcycle manufacturer started out in a small shed in Milwaukee.

Time for more beer! I walked over to Mob Craft where they experiment with unique flavors and combinations. Later that night, I had charbroiled oysters and a decadent Lobster Pot Pie at Third Coast Provisions.

Day 3 began with a delicious Sunday brunch at Buckley’s Restaurant & Bar. The Brunch Punch, house made pop tarts, and steak and eggs were all wonderful! Then I went to the Milwaukee Art Museum for a bit. The building was an impressive sculpture.

Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery offers historic beer tours worth checking out. The current owner was our guide that day. Don’t forget to raise a glass with King Gambrinus!

I had to stop by the Public Market for some local cheese, beer, and a few raw oysters.

Dinner was at DanDan where I enjoyed the Schmaltz Fried Rice and Happy Chicken.

Later that evening I enjoyed custom cocktails and tried a Milwaukee-style Old Fashioned with the lovely couple I met the first night at Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge.

The next morning I took a stroll along the River Walk and said hi to the Bronze Fonz. Milwaukee was the setting for Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley.

It was game day, so I pregamed at the Milwaukee Brat House where they offer double fisters and a free shuttle to Brewers games. Perfect!

Off to Miller Park to watch the Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros!

After the game, I stopped by AJ Bombers where they have peanuts bombs, a peanut butter burger, and yummy frozen custard.

I wanted to see the historic Pfister Hotel, so I decided to have drinks at Blu on the 23rd floor. I met a couple super cool guys and ended up meeting them at the Milwaukee Brewing Company the following afternoon after my incredible Bloody Mary at The Original Soblemans on St. Paul. Cheers!

I booked an 8pm flight and had time for one last meal before heading to the airport. I absolutely loved the wine and Neapolitan pizza at San Giorgio. I sat at the pizza oven counter and ordered one of the pizza specials.

Cool bars, tasty food, Miller Park, and lots and lots of beer. Milwaukee was so much fun and I met some wonderful people! Thank you and cheers!
