How do the Mersupials see Clark? As a friend? As family? Something more complicated given their situation?

Hi!

So I think the mers solidly see Clark as “one of the pod” and essentially part of their family. I don’t remember where I talked about mer social structure, but I believe I’ve said that male Mers tend to raise their children communally.

In the wild, mer pods generally take three forms: male familial pods, female temporal pods, or male-female coupling pods. Male familial pods are the most common and often have the most individuals together. They are formed of multiple males with their pups and are multi-generational. Male pods are very strongly bonded and male Mers are often born into a pod which they do not leave their entire life. Females of the species are usually raised in male familial pods but almost always leave to go solo.

Occasionally females form pairs or small pods called female temporal pods, but they tend to be more fleeting or made for a purpose, such as hunting large prey. As the name suggests, these pods are temporary and rarely get above five individuals due to the aggressive nature of females. There have been many documented cases of female temporal pods ending due to in-fighting or even killing of other pod members, an instance that is exceedingly rare in male familial pods.

Male-female coupling pods form when an adult male and adult female live together in a lone couple. These tend to be a forced arrangement by the female onto the male. They can arise through circumstance such as a sister and brother hunting together, but most likely it is a forced arrangement where a male was seperated from a familial pod to breed with a female and care solely for her pups. It is not particularly uncommon and often is the reason why new pods forms, though the male is often extremely distressed by the arrangement and may try to return to a familial pod.

Males instinctively form pods because it provides an advantage in raising children and protection against females who could try to come in and kill pups to make room for their own or steal a mate from the pod. With multiple adults in a pod, males can spread the duties of childcare and are well-documented to frequently pass their pups into the pouches of related and unrelated males. This is also a strategy against infanticide by females as instantly frees up a pouch without the death of a pup or can confuse a female regarding their relatedness to a pup. Females do not kill their own children and they are much less likely to kill any pups at all if they are not sure what male is currently pouching their young. Pod members also provide protection against separation or the killing of pups as they can gang up on a lone female.

So, this is a long way to say that Bruce is basically hardwired to form pods, especially in stressful situations because pod = safety in the mer brain. This is only heightened when he has multiple pups and there’s more paternal pressure on him with his limited pouch space. Even though Clark is a different species, Bruce was raised by humans and sees them as equals so he wouldn’t hesitate to apply pod status to one. If anything, he’s probably really pissed that Clark never puts the pups in his pouch and Bruce has to do all the work, like wth Clark is supposed to be helping him out here.

Even though Clark has hurt them occasionally, Clark has basically lived with them for multiple years and there’s years of instances of Clark caring and helping raise the pups. The pups definitely see Clark as pod. He helped raise them. He’s protected them in many ways. They trust him completely even though he’s weird and funny looking. They see him as similar to Bruce though not as close as they recognise Bruce as their pouch parent. After all, Bruce was the one who pouched them when they hatched, nursed them and carried them when they were at their most fragile; he’s their ultimate parent, though that’s typical for mer social structures.

He's accepted his death, and figures his best strategy is to make it as painless as possible. After all, there's no hope when he's going into the arena with Astrid Hofferson, who's hated him since childhood, and the two frightening siblings from District Two that seem intent on killing him the first chance they get.

And then he finds a mutt.

Oh Yeah Baby It’s Time

Okay, hear me out. A time travel miraculous au, but it's a crossover with httyd.

Marinette accidentally gets sent back in time during an Akuma attack without Tikki, and regresses her age abit. She passes out and doesn't have her memory for a while when Hiccup and the gang find her and help her, despite the language barrier and strange clothes. She does get a dragon, I'm not sure what one yet, hut I'm thinking either a night fury, skrill, snaptrapper, or razorwhip. I will do a poll for this, now imma explain my choices.

Night fury:

She is the main character and got sent back in time, so having her be found by a nightfury would be a surprise since toothless is supposedly the last one. Also, night furies are Hella loyal and I know that the fury would protect Marinette until its last breath. Boy name: Plagg. Girl Name: Tikki

Skrill:

Skrills dont take no shit. They will electrocute you and they are hard to befriend. With Marinette's godlike luck, it will happen and the skrill will be insanely loyal, always by her side. The night fury and skrill tie for having insanely high amounts of loyalty to those they care about. Boy name: Lightning. Girl Name: Aurora

Snaptrapper:

Imma be honest, it just seems like it fits her. The multiple heads seem like they could help her with many things, like her passion for designing and baking(they could hand her materials). The multi headed dragon could also help her get used to the world and protect her. Multiple eyes are better than one after all. Head 1: Un. Head 2: Deux. Head 3: Trois. Head 4: Quatre.

Razorwhip:

Hella protective. Will fight you if you mess with her. Follows her everywhere and uses her armor like scales as weapons for Marinette so she can get used to the times. Name: Chloe(Chloe is nice in this au, Fite me)

Now, Marinette will be sent to early berk, before Hiccup met Toothless. The two will have a sibling like relationship and idk if there will be a ship yet, but if there was, then it'd be Lukanette with a mixed jealously of Felix and Kagami. Niw the real kicker here is that the Akuma is eventually taken care of, but Marinette doesn't come back right away because she had gotten so important to past events. She does eventually come back and reunites with everyone, but it's clear that she had changed greatly. For one, she's more confident and doesn't stutter, and the others....are up to debate. But it's also clear that she didn't come back alone, because a week after she returned, her dragon(s) and her extended family appear. I'll do another rant about this tomorrow, but I'll call this How To Train Your Miraculous or HTTYM

How To Train Your Mythosaur

Graveyards and ghost towns (and other stuff you wouldn't expect to be bonding experiences but were anyway)

I'm interested in both of these so if you'd like to ramble about one or both of them, the floor is yours.

Both? Both. Both is good.

So for HTTYM—something I had a lot of fun with was the characters. Ezra, obviously, is Hiccup. But he didn't really have a parent-figure in Rebels that fit the vibe for Stoick, so I played with that a bit. Ezra is raised by the village blacksmith, Zeb. The chief of the village is actually, in fact, a chieftess—Ursa the Dauntless. And Hiccup and Stoick's character development/relationship goes to Sabine and Ursa.

In this AU, the village—Krownest—is surrounded by forests, and that's where a lot of the dragons live. Rumor has it that Ezra was found as a baby, asleep in a dragon's nest, and Zeb took him in. The village nicknamed him "Dragonson" because, yknow, he was found in the nest, and by doing that, they completely ruined any chances of him being popular or ever having friends.

Mostly.

Sabine is the exception.

She had An Incident in her past that made her an outcast for a long time, and she and Ezra became friends basically because nobody else wanted to be friends with them. Now, by the time the fic happens, she's started to regain her former popularity, and is having trouble balancing her need to prove herself to her mother and her old friendships that are starting to reconnect, with her friendship with Ezra, who doesn't fit in the "future chieftess" life she's supposed to have.

And the conflict only gets worse, once she realizes he's keeping secrets from her.

Big, black, dragon-sized secrets named Wolf.

Graveyards and ghost towns! This is the sequel to November blizzards, which was the first fic I ever posted. It's a Rebels Modern AU, where Sabine and Zeb are Kanan and Hera's foster kids, Chopper is the family's psycho dog, and Ezra is the kid they found in a dumpster (no, seriously.)

The sequel is about what happened after November Blizzards, how they found each other again, and how Ezra gradually got adopted into the family. I have lots of plans for it! Mostly family fluff and a bit of angst.

Ezra sighed, kicking his feet up on the armrest of his futon couch. He should probably go to sleep. The cool night air breezed through the screenless window, making him shiver, but at least it helped keep the smell of cigarettes out of his room. Everything was silent, and peaceful, and— “So do I need to throw hands with your evil stepsmuncle, or what?” Sabine demanded, hauling herself over the windowsill and tumbling onto his rug, and Ezra barely muffled a startled shriek. “What are you doing here?” he hissed, and then: “Stepsmuncle?” “Cinderezra and the evil stepsmuncle,” she said, brushing herself off as she stood. “What’s so confusing about that?” Ezra sighed, sitting up. “Sabine, you really need to leave.” He gave a nervous look to his closed door. He didn’t think sound would be loud enough to carry, but… “If Maul finds you here, we're gonna be in a lot of trouble.” “Because I'm your friend who cared enough to drive across town for you, or because I'm a girl who snuck into your room in the middle of the night?” “Both.”

Not a schedule per se, but I'm trying hard to update Sleep Training, the sequel to HtTYM, once every week! Next chapter should be up tomorrow!

No idea when the next fic will happen after that but honestly JttW has a death grip on my mind and soul right now so, uh. Probably you won't have to wait too long. 😂

Mer!Dickie being a cute little attention sponge is so cute. A very lovable little guy

He’s just a little guy! He’s 8ft long and weighs multiple hundreds of pounds and could kill a human in like 15 seconds, but he’s just a cute baby who loves attention!

I do love mersupial Dickie. He’s kinda going through it at the moment, but he’s still trying to be happy and not depressed. There’s only a touch of zoochosis in his head.

I am always tempted a bit to do perhaps a shorter vignette from his pov. Because things just aren’t explained to him. Where is he and why is he here? Where’s his dad? Where’s his brothers? Are they okay? Will he ever see them again? What’s happening? When can he go home?

I actually think he’s much more mentally unstable than what Clark sees on the surface. He sees Dick pacing around his aquarium and that’s just the physical manifestation of his mind racing and racing and racing.
