Tell us about Dill and Alexander! I kinda picture them in my head as Kermit and that blue eagle Muppet but gay and gamer/greasy mechanic. Is that where you got the idea? Is sburb's frog fascination gonna play into the story of these boyos?
oh what's that? you want to be the captive audience for a lore dump about my very special guys? completely unprompted and with total investment in everything i might have to say? well well, don't mind if i do!
SO, Dill Croaker and Alexander Falcon are members of a now-defunct group called The Falconers. they are modeled after Star Fox (the team) from Star Fox (the video games). we haven't seen Alex on screen yet, but here's @girlpillz's rendering of Dill for B1 verse 1, where Lenore Lehart shows off her sick bouncy ball skills for Dana Straten to get the attention of Dill.
Alex being a blue falcon, i imagine he looks legally distinct from Falco Lombardi from Star Fox (the video games; the team) albeit less cocky and attitudinous.
there are technical reasons for The Falconers' existence. going into 3.2B, i knew i wanted a secondary supporting cast in the margins capable of handling dirtywork off-screen. for instance, they're decrypting and analyzing Lenore's stolen witch data so the main cast doesn't have to worry about it, leaving us more time to luxuriate in what we're actually here for: feelings.
Star Fox 64 is my favorite game, so when it came time to come up with that supporting cast, the possibilities of a knockoff Star Fox team immediately sold me on the idea (especially since this is the only story where i will ever reasonably be able to get away with such a blatant act of self-indulgence. you wouldn't believe it from looking, but i don't actually do a lot of indulging myself with Godfeels. i try very hard to never throw things in without serious calculation. The Falconers are pretty much the only thing i've introduced that came as an inorganic external mandate of my own selfish making, and even then i've worked very hard to integrate them naturally). as a broken up four-person crew, they mirror the Upsilons-- and so, them helping the Falconers reunite in order to find Alphi and Edie gives these guys some juice. their backstory is a shadow of the Upsilons', and a useful point of comparison as the narrative plugs along. i could've made a girl Star Fox team, but frankly Godfeels is just so women-centered, so female-focused, so tgirl-transfixed that i figured it was about time to throw the boylikers a bone.
The Falconers are balanced as a calculated twist on the Star Fox team. the most immediate difference is that here, Alexander Falcon fills the role of Fox McCloud. he's the charismatic team leader, a little surly (especially these days) but good at his job and deeply committed to the care of his team. Dill Croaker is, obviously, only about five runs through the dryer away from Slippy Toad, and fills the same role. my reason for this is that everyone is mean to Slippy and they're wrong. Slippy is a brilliant engineer and programmer, why do you expect him to be an ace fighter pilot too? that's YOUR job, hotshot! Nintendo themselves have been all over the map with Slippy in terms of characterization, pretty much never getting him quite as right as he felt in 64. so, yeah, Dill is my take on Slippy: a clueless gamer frog who plays with a lot of edgelords but is himself impervious to their venom. he never cusses because he's a good boy, and he respects women.
Dill and Alex have lived together on Crime Planet for a long time. are they fucking? no, i don't believe they are. Dill strikes me as something of an ace king, and anyway i don't think he's Alex's type. mostly they work together in the shop and hang out doing bro stuff. maybe Alex lifts weights while Dill plays shitty space MOBAs. but all this begs the question: who is Alex's type?
as of the B1 solo we've learned a little bit about the other two Falconers. first there is Erol [last name unknown], the oldest member of the crew who's likely analogous to Peppy Hare. which leaves us with Yolo Sionnach. a lot of information can be implied about him from this exchange:
yes, a lot of information indeed. but as much as i would love to enumerate the implications, i must hold my tongue. i mean, i would type it all out, but i can't, because i'm literally using my fingers to hold my tongue in place so that i can't say the spoilers out loud
anyway, i like the muppet comparison. that wasn't what i had in mind at all, but now i'm imagining the Falconers as the puppets Nintendo used to advertise Star Fox Zero and........ ohhhh scope creep you saucy temptress
youtube
the Slippy slander is rampant! and that's to say nothing of the ad where muppet versions of Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Reggie Fils-Aime slowly transform into Peppy, Fox, and Falco respectively.
i can't say that Sburb/the Universe Engine have much to do with The Falconers' story. they're not godtier, they don't know anything about the UE, they are literally just space mercenary furries. they come from the Lemurian Star System, trained at the Academy on Lemuria, and worked in the Lemurian Sky Corps until starting their own independent outfit as contractors (which i imagine is a fairly common career path in a region racked by interplanetary war and rampant espionage). age-wise, they're in their mid 30s.
thank you for this wonderful question. no one ever asks about the other guys, and i am always dying to talk about the other guys.

“Oh, I get it. Well, you’re inside of the Great Fox...” Fox McCloud spoke to Zizzi. “And you’re in the Lylat System.” Peppy Hare said on where Zizzi is. “We should probably introduce ourselves and what we’re doing.” Slippy Toad suggested. “Suit yourself, frog boy.” Falco said as he sits down somewhere and puts his feet up.
“The name’s Fox. Fox McCloud, lead pilot of the Star Fox team, an elite fighter squadron established by ex-Cornerian flying ace James McCloud, my father.” Fox introduced. “With me are my fly mates of the group.”
“That over there is Falco Lombardi, a hotshot ace pilot who always has my back when the going gets rough.” Fox said about Falco. “He done some stuff before joining Star Fox, but he doesn’t like to talk about it.” Fox said as Falco turned his head.
“This here is Slippy Toad, a childhood friend of mine, and the mechanic of the Star Fox team.” Fox introduced Zizzi to Slippy. “I made a lot of stuff being in the squadron. The Arwings, Landmaster, even the Blue-Marine.” Slippy spoke.
“If only he wasn’t such a screw-up out there when bogeys are on his tail.” Peppy nagged. “Thanks a lot, Peppy.” Slippy said half-lidded. “And that’s Peppy Hare, one of my father’s wingmen, and the glue who sticks the team together.” Fox said about Peppy. “And a bit of a nag too.” Falco said under his breath. “I HEARD THAT!” Peppy shouted.
Zizzi would shake her head gently as she had been teleported on a mission. This a bit different for her as it seems like she was a large ship by the looks of it. She made over a window as she was looking out into space. "Woah." She put her hands on the window as she was taking in everything. (Star Fox)
The large ship that Zizzi was in is the Great Fox, a flagship, space carrier and the mobile headquarters for the mercenaries-for-hire, the Star Fox Team. Slippy Toad, the team's mechanic was heading over to the bridge when he saw Zizzi. "AAHH!!"
"Slippy, what is it?" Fox shouted as he, Falco Lombardi, and Peppy Hare came to the bridge. "What in the?" Peppy Hare spoke. "Hey! Who let you in the Great Fox?" Falco Lombardi asked seeing Zizzi.
"Who are you? State your business on the Great Fox." Fox asked crossing his arms.

THOUGHTS ON NEW JUNO ARC!
Juno and Mick’s relationship has developed so much and I just. Love them so much.
Juno always makes more assumptions about Mick than he would with anyone else and I’m glad that bit him in the butt a little bit here while still staying true to their characters and their development.
“We all need to find our people in this world.” Tears NBD.
And also. Juno being a little bitch to Lately bc he’s a hotshot space criminal now lollllll what if he’d just been like “oh? You’re a well known space criminal? Ever heard of the Aurinko Crime Family?”
And Mick is a good person to a FAULT and I am looking forward to the trip of them reuniting. I’m proud of Juno for respecting his decision while calling him dumb. Because. Yeah. It is kinda dumb but also very respectable.
RITA!!!! My love. Looking forward do that Juno Rita hug reunion scene.

When Ace was born, the others mentioned & teased Falco that the pink/blue cotton candy-colored reverse griffin is way too CUTE to be Star Fox's blue hotshot avian ace pilot's son especially when Ace does have a cat head thanks to Katt's genes only with top-blue/bottom-pink crest-covered bigger ears lol! ☁🍬🐱🐦😆

the Smashers and their Host Ch13 Preview
Series: Super Smash Bros.
Characters: Reader, Literally Everyone In Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Summary: You're an inter-dimensional being that owns a huge estate situated on the cusp of spacetime. You've been asked to rent out your mansion for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. tournament. What could possibly go wrong?
Tags: Reader-Insert, Romantic & Platonic Harem, Comedy, Fluff, No Smut
Read the fic here!
[So after a year, I finally finished chapter 11... During my writer’s block, I actually started on what was then going to be chapter 12, but I’ve seen then squeezed another chapter between them in the plans. So, if all goes according to plan, this will be May’s update. Anyways, I feel like posting it so!! It’s not as meaty as the chapter 11 preview - this one is only about 2k words instead of a whopping 13k - but I hope you enjoy regardless!]
You can’t help but stare as the roller coaster above slowly reaches its peak before plummeting downwards, accompanied by a chorus of screams. Just watching the cars zip through loops and corkscrews makes your head spin, and you find yourself grateful that you aren’t on that particular ride. You don’t know if your heart could take it.
The repairs at the mansion finished with accompanying fanfare (well, in your head, at least) and you thought you’d be able to sit back and relax for a bit. Your new life had other plans, of course, and the Smashers were absolutely insatiable, so you had been invited to join them to an amusement park. Honestly, you should have declined - you wanted to! - but…
“Pleaaaaase?” Roy had been the one to ask you to join them, giving you puppy dog eyes as he held the brochure out. The park was in a place called Nimbasa City - recently expanded! grand re-opening! - which you recognized as a place in the Pokemon universe.
“You know you can go without me, right?” you tried, still feeling worn out from all the Social Activities and babysitting you’ve been doing lately. The other day, you found DK using Pac-man as a bowling ball to “prank” anyone wandering the halls. Then the following day, you’re pretty sure Villager and Toon Link had a slingshot competition with the mansions’ windows. And then the day after that, Leaf helped you play detective to find out who was stealing all the speakers throughout the mansion, just to find Diddy Kong using them to create a “gaming set-up fit for a king”.
Why.
Completely oblivious to your weariness, Roy’s expression remained enthusiastic, even when he gave you a mock-frown. “Sure, but, you said we would hang out together next time everyone was doing something!”
“I did?”
“Yeah, you did!”
Oh right, you did. You did say that after he wasn’t invited to the sleepover. Curse you and your desire to keep everyone happy! Now you have to go!
And so, after someone consulted Master Hand about building a temporary transporter directly to Nimbasa City, here you are.
“Whoa, it’s even cooler than in the pictures!” Roy, determined to take you up on your offer to spend time together, arrived via teleporter alongside you. While the mansion has been abuzz over another multiverse outing, you have no idea who actually intended on going. It’s already midday, so there are probably plenty of Smashers already here…
Pulling your gaze away from the roller coaster, you notice that your redheaded companion was also staring intently at the Rayquaza-themed deathtrap. His expression is strained, leading you to believe the both of you are thinking the same thing.
“Why don’t we start with getting something to eat?” you suggest, thinking of the safest option possible. Oh, but if you end up going on rides with a full stomach… Hm, maybe that’s not as safe as you thought. But Roy eagerly takes your suggestion and you have no choice but to follow him to the food court.
“That’s a great idea! I’m dying to see what kind of food this world has!”
You can’t help but agree, but his words have curiosity bubbling within you. “Have you never visited the Pokemon world before?”
“Only once, during Melee!” His grin is almost infectious, though it mellows out as he continues talking. “We never came out here during the last tournament season! ...Or at least, not while I was around.” Roy frowns a moment before putting on another smile, though this one seems a bit more forced. “Melee’s whole thing though was that we were travelling to a new universe for each round of the tournament. For the Pokemon world though, we took a blimp to the stadium, so we didn’t really get to explore…”
That’s right - you forgot Roy was technically only invited to one full tournament, so he wouldn’t have had as much time to relax and travel around with the others. It was only by popular demand that he was invited for the “extra” tournaments, appearing alongside Ryu as a secret opponent for the champions of the mini doubles tournament. They’d both go on to appear in the remaining tournaments and random matchups of the season. While that would have given him a few months to participate in fun activities with the others, you have to imagine a lot of that slows down during tournament season.
“But, a few Smashers and I snuck out between matches to check out the local town.” Roy continues his story sheepishly, smiling fondly at the memory. “And then we uh, went a bit too far… got lost in a cave… We made it back just in time for our next match, but Master Hand really gave us an earful…” He laughs awkwardly, and you find yourself snickering at the idea of Master Hand panicking when he discovered some of his hotshot superstars have gone missing.
“Who all went with you?”
He counts them off on his fingers as he lists everyone. “Me, Pichu, Young Link, Popo, Nana... oh, and Ness. Pikachu ended up being the one who found us lost in the cave.”
You can just imagine the six of them running in circles trying to find the exit, just to have Pikachu show up and use its familiarity of the region to lead them out in mere minutes.
...Huh. Funny, most of those six are Smashers that didn’t get invited back every year afterwards. And you remember there had once been rumours that Ness wasn’t going to be invited back to Brawl…
...Eh, probably just a coincidence. Master Hand wouldn’t exclude someone over an incident like that.
“I’m surprised Pikachu didn’t try to get you even more lost on purpose,” you say offhandedly. Roy’s expression is surprisingly contemplative.
“Nah, Pikachu used to be cool back then. Like, sure he liked to hype up the crowd, but outside of matches he was really chill.” He pauses. “I was surprised to find out he kind of became a jerk. Apparently he’s just been that way since the start of Brawl.”
“Really?” And here you thought the first tournament had been the catalyst to its inflated ego, where the electric rodent had won both the singles and the doubles tournaments that season. Pikachu’s record during Melee was pretty average… maybe something else happened between that and Brawl? An event none of the Smashers would have known about?
Roy shrugs - he’s just in the dark about it as you are - and you notice you’ve arrived at the food court, signalling the end of the conversation. You spot a Pansage, a Panpour, and a Pansear behind a long counter. Pansage takes orders and hands them to the other two monkeys, who then proceed to rush around unnecessarily chaotically to put the order together. This seems like the type of environment where mistakes are easily made, but a lot of people seem to be eating food from here, so apparently they know what they’re doing…?
You end up ordering a Rawst Burger and a lemonade, while Roy gets a corn dog and a soda pop. On your way to finding somewhere to sit, you spot Falco getting his hot dog stolen by the Duck Hunt Dog. You’re glad he’s too far to notice you laughing.
“Look, there’s space at that table!” Your attention is brought back to Roy, who is pointing at a table with only one other person sitting at it. Coincidentally, the spiky blond haired dude there is someone you recognize as part of the Smash crew. Roy takes longer to recognize him - it’s not until you’ve both rounded the table to sit across from the swordsman that he addresses him.
“Oh hey, you’re that guy… uh, Rain, was it?”
When the blond looks up and you see his face, an involuntary snort arises from your throat as you try to hold back laughter.
“It’s Cloud. Cloud Strife.” Apparently they offer facepainting somewhere at the park, because Cloud’s face is covered in ink that resembles a bunny. When combined with his completely serious expression, you have to hide a smile behind your hand as you sit down.
“Right, that’s it. I knew that.” Roy sits next to you, raising an eyebrow at the swordsman across from you two. “What’s on your face?”
“It’s a rabbit.”
“I guess someone is offering facepainting somewhere?” you clarify helpfully, and Roy’s face lights up in recognition.
“Oh! That sounds fun.” He looks to you with enthusiasm. “Hey, what animal do you think I should get? Heh, probably something fierce, like a lion, or--”
“A puppy,” you reply without hesitation, interrupting his own ideas. Roy looked shocked at your suggestion - almost even offended. Whoops.
“A-A puppy? Not like… a bigger dog? A wolf, maybe…?”
“I think a puppy would suit you as well,” Cloud agrees. Roy’s jaw drops as he’s left struggling for an objection, but Cloud moves the conversation before he can say anything. “They also do portraits - look.”
He hands you a large rolled up piece of canvas paper that you’ve been curious about for awhile now before returning to picking at his funnel cake (mm, you gotta get one of those later). Roy leans into your personal space to take a look as you unroll it.
Oh my. That is certainly a caricature.
Roy almost immediately lets out a laugh. “Wo-ow! That would explain your face.”
The canvas blocks your vision so you can’t see Cloud’s face, but you can hear him exhale deeply. Rolling the portrait back up, you place it down on the table.
“I like the style! The art is very clean.” You’ve seen a lot of skill levels in the art found in your mansion, so it’s pretty easy to think outside of “bad” and “good”. Then of course, there’s your own art to consider… yeesh. “I think the artist really captured your character.”
“That’s what I thought,” Cloud responds with a nod, relaxing in the seat. Roy snorts beside you, and you refrain from elbowing him quiet in favour of shooting him a wry look.
“What, you think you could do better?”
Your challenge seems to actually take him off guard, and he fumbles to regain his confidence. “Uh… pfft. Of course. Anyone could do that.” He tries to laugh confidently, but there’s a clear nervous edge to it. Refusing to show him mercy, you play along by feigning amazement.
“Really? Wow, I’d love to see that. Maybe we should have an art show back at the mansion! Wouldn’t that be fun?”
“O-Ooh, I mean… You really think people would be interested in that…?”
Cloud recognizes the game you are playing and chimes in with an immediate “I would”. You do a gesture as if to say “see??”, smiling bright and devious until his resolve finally breaks.
“F-Fine! I’ll do it! But don’t say I didn’t warn you, cuz I’m… really good!!” His voice shakes with anxiety at the end, and it takes all you have not to burst out laughing. This is good. This is so good. You’ll have to file this “art show” idea away for down the road, so you can spring it on him again unexpectedly. Although, torture and humiliation aside, you actually suddenly are curious if any of the Smashers are secretly artists.
“Yes! I’m looking forward to it!” With a grin, you end the conversation by finally picking up your burger and taking a bite into it. Huh, it tastes… fruity. Bitter. Wait, that must be because there are Rawst Berries used in it. Guess you should have seen this coming. You don’t hate it, but the taste has definitely taken you off-guard and you’re not sure you like the mix of meat and berry.
You must have been making a face because Cloud slides his funnel cake plate halfway across the table. “Here. I probably won’t finish it anyways.”
Forgetting about his previous worries, Roy smiles and reaches for the plate. “Ooh, don’t mind if I do--” To his dismay, Cloud hits his hand away.
“I didn’t offer it to you.”
Roy looks torn. You’d feel bad for him if it wasn’t so funny. Likewise, you usually try to politely decline gifts so as to not seem greedy, but you are enjoying having fun at Roy’s expense. “Thanks!” You put down the burger and reach for a piece of the doughy, sugary treat. Ripping it off, you pop it in your mouth and audibly hum in delight. Hehe, you’re a real devil!! If you wanted to be really mean, you could mention how sad it is that Roy can’t know how good this is, but you are not that cruel. Not right now, at least.
Between stealing chunks of funnel cake and continuing to try finishing the burger (nnnnnope, still tastes weird!), you let your mind wander to thoughts regarding the swordsman across from you. Back in the day, Cloud was a popular request to join the tournament despite existing extremely far away from the bubble of universes Master Hand typically picked from. When he was announced as a surprise participant in the final Super Smash Bros. 4 season tournament, fans exploded with excitement. You were honestly surprised to see him on the list for the Ultimate roster - you hear that Cloud Strife is a tough guy to work with and that’s why he doesn’t make many multiverse appearances despite his popularity. Not even the heads of the more local Playstation All-Stars tournament could get him. Master Hand must have really pulled some strings to get him to participate in Smash not once, but twice.
[...and that is unfortunately all I have. See you next month for chapter 12!]

@starry-galaxy64 i’m gonna put this here (same to u anon… u know who u are lsakfnciefweafnw)
it’s under the read more!
Fox had been telling Slippy about his new friend for a few weeks now, and Slippy was finally going to be able to meet him. Fox had met this new friend outside of the Academy and had gotten him to join the Academy.
“Will we be able to find him easily?” Slippy asked, him and Fox were standing in the entrance of the cafeteria.
“Oh yeah, he’s got bright blue and red feathers, he won’t be hard to find.” Fox’s tail was wagging noticeably, but not out of control. Slippy couldn’t imagine how excited Fox was for Slippy to meet his new friend.
Slippy made eye contact with a taller, lanky avian. Bright blue feathers all over with bright red around his eyes. That had to be him.
“Fox, I think he’s right there,” Slippy tapped Fox’s shoulder and gestured towards the bird. Fox grinned and grabbed Slippy’s wrist, pulling him over.
“Hey Falco!” Fox stopped right before the table Falco was sitting at, letting go of Slippy’s wrist and then wrapping his arm around Slippy’s shoulders. “This is my friend, Slippy, I’ve been telling you about!” Slippy politely waved, Falco standing from his seat. He was a lot taller.
“Falco Lombardi, nice to meet you,” Falco stuck out his hand and gave Slippy a firm handshake. “Yeah, Fox has been telling me a lot about you,”
“Fox has been telling me a lot about you too!” Slippy beamed. “Hopefully he’s been saying nothing but good things…”
Falco chuckled, “Eh, nothing too bad. He said you’re like, a genius,”
“Hes exaggerating, I’m just really good with mechanics. As much as I love flying and can pass what I need to, fixing ships is definitely my forte,” Slippy said modestly. “He told me you’re an amazing pilot and that you’d probably be top in our class before the semester even ends,”
Falco’s chest puffed up, “Not to toot my own horn, but that’s very possible. We’ll have to see of course. Foxy has a tendency of proving himself to be the best, which I’ve been trying to beat him, take him down a peg before his ego gets too inflated,”
“My ego? Yeah, right Mr. Hotshot. The only reason you haven’t beat me yet is because you don’t think before you act and that leads to you losing your temper,” Fox gave Falco a playful slap on the shoulder. Falco scowled.
“Whatever,” Falco muttered, “Anyways, you guys wanna get something to eat? I’m starving,”
“Sure! Hopefully they’ve got something good today,” Slippy said.
“Do they ever?” Falco sighed, “If they do I can never find what’s good,”
“Oh! Here, I’ll show you! You too, Fox! I’ve been trying to prove to him they do have good food here too, you’ve just gotta know where to look,” Slippy tapped the side of his eye.
“Alright then, lead the way,” Falco shrugged, smiling as he followed Slippy. Fox was right behind them, grinning.
That went much better than he had expected. He’d worried their personalities would clash immediately but they seemed alright. At least for now, Fox had a feeling they’d later clash as they got to actually know each other but given how well they’re getting along now.
Fox could certainly say, they’d be the ones who’d protect each other the most.
And he was right.

≪ ❛ mistletoe meme ❜ ╱ accepting. ≫
❛ Yeesh, this the best we could come up with for decorations huh. Where’d all those credits get to, not even a full tree? Hah . . . Still though, looks nice in here. ❜
The avian leans up against the doorframe of the entrance to the main room of the Great Fox. Arms are crossed loosely over his chest, and bright blue feathers seem to glow with the help of the few lights that hung here and there. However, while he was rather busy observing the decor and commenting rather sarcastically, he failed to notice a very crucial decoration, one that would explain the next actions of the vulpine before him. After his rather smug remark, he gives a warm smile to Fox before his eyes dart back to the large screen that Slippy was currently playing on. Emerald orbs then trail over to Peppy who seemed to be enjoying the time to relax rather than clean and nag about this and that. It seemed as though the bird was drinking it all in and dropping his guard of sarcastic remarks and things of the like. He almost seemed happy, warm, content with where he was, which if one knew Falco was quite a high praise to give. Finally, those bright green eyes are led back to Fox who draws closer, closer than he’d ever seen before, feathers seem to ruffle and brows seem to rise in curiosity but he doesn’t make a snappy remark, doesn’t push him away when he’s tugged down into a kiss.
All at once his head is swimming, his heart thumping and he doesn’t know where to put his hands as he leans into it and welcomes it fully. It takes him a few moments to open his eyes, and he blinks a few times, and for once he has nothing witty to say. No snide remark, no sarcastic biting quip or annoyed huff to offer. Nothing. He just stands there seemingly shocked but welcoming of it, again he looks down at Fox and he opens his mouth, there’s a sudden flicker of softness , desperation in his eyes and then all at once it’s gone and he closes his mouth. He wants to say something, wants to tell him but . . . he can’t. There’s an uncharacteristically lost look on his face for a moment before he looks up and offers a light breath through his nose, a smile tugging at his lips almost like he was thankful he didn’t have to say whatever it is he wanted to. Mistletoe. It was just the fucking mistletoe.
There’s a twinge of disappointment and something heavy that weights in his chest for a moment before it fades and he seemingly melts back to his old self. Sighing and leaning up against the doorframe again as he shakes his head and smiles.
❛ Someone’s had a little too much Papetoonian Tequila huh Foxy? ❜
Despite the grin and his rather nonchalant tone something seemed off about Falco now, like he was trying to regain his role of being the sarcastic hotshot flyboy they all knew and loved. He wonders quietly if Fox could tell the difference of when he was hiding behind that mask, or if he just thought that’s how Falco always was. Best not to dwell on it, the holidays are about celebrating not moping.
❛ Speakin of where’d you put it, think I need me a drink too. ❜

Star Fox 64 aka Lylat Wars Playthrough
Fighter: Fox McCloud
Game: Lylat Wars (aka Star Fox 64), Wii U virtual console (N64). First Released on April 27th 1997.
Fighter Bio.
The son of James McCloud, an expert pilot and leader of the Star Fox team, Fox grew up idolising his Father and wanting to follow in his footsteps. When James and his team were sent to the planet Venom, the planet the evil scientist Andross was banished to in order to investigate reports of bio weapon activities, he was betrayed by a member of his team and went missing. Peppy Hare the only remaining member of Star Fox returned to tell Fox of his Father’s fate. Born on the planet Papetoon but raised on Corneria, Fox had trained at the Cornerian Flight Academy with his best friend Slippy Toad and Bill Grey, showing a gift for flying. Learning of his Father’s disappearance from Peppy, Fox dropped out of the Cornerian Flight Academy with grief, however he was persuaded and mentored by Peppy to become the new leader of the Star Fox team. Fox recruited his friend Slippy, as well as a hotshot pilot, Falco Lombardi to form a new Star Fox team. Sometime after, the team received a distress call from General Pepper of Corneria, informing them Andross had declared war and invaded the Lylat System, reaching Corneria. Team Star Fox went into action taking on Andross’s forces and eventually taking down the Scientist Emperor himself.
There are three different timelines for the Star Fox series, the original SNES era timeline which officially only had one game before the unreleased Star Fox 2 finally saw a release in 2017. The current timeline which arguably has three games (Star Fox Zero, Star Fox Guard and possibly Starlink Battle for Atlas.) and finally the most well-known incarnation, the Starfox 64 timeline which covers four games (64, Adventures, Assault and Command.) The history of Fox in the first paragraph can apply to all three timelines, however following these events the next events differ a lot between each timeline. Since it is the version of Fox represented the most in the Smash Bros series, I will be covering the Star Fox 64 timeline in this entry, however down the line for some alts I will be discussing events in the other two timelines.
Following the defeat of Andross, the Star Fox team underwent some hardships finding that despite their hefty reward for their work they were unable to find many new assignments. During this time, Falco left the Star Fox team looking for more interesting thrills, Peppy was finding himself growing too old to really fly missions anymore and Slippy had always been more interested in mechanics than flying, leaving Fox in a rut. On top of this, their home ship the Great Fox was in a bad state requiring maintenance they couldn’t afford. It was in this period of time that General Pepper contacted the Star Fox Team once again with another mission, this time to a planet known as Sauria, the Dinosaur Planet. This planet was in a bad state due to large parts of it being ripped apart and could explode if something wasn’t done, possibly causing untold destruction to the entire Lylat System. Fox jumped into action.
Fox is a strong leader of his team, often listening to the advice others will give him before making his decisions. Fox is extremely loyal to his teammates doing all he can to protect them in battle, although sometimes this can make him somewhat overbearing which has strained some of his relationships such as with Krystal. Although he’s not at the level of Falco, Fox still can be cocky which results in a strong rivalry between the two. Fox is a mercenary at heart and although he won’t fight for those he deems wrong, he won’t hesitate to charge for his heroics, not to mention point out when he feels he’s not being paid enough. Fox’s flight skill is arguably the best on the team, however this may be due to Falco’s propensity to let his ego get the better of him which Fox tends to be better at keeping in check. Fox can deal with stealthier approaches, but he’ll always prefer to simply blast his way out of trouble where possible, showing skills at air combat, land combat, sea combat and on foot.
Fox has a personal affinity for the Arwing, and although he’s willing to use other craft, in games where there are a variety of craft Fox will always go for a standard Arwing or in one case the successor the Arwing II. Due to this, Fox’s stats in comparison to others tend to be all-around, not being particularly strong in one aspect nor weak in any other aspect. Fox is also the only character in Star Fox Command who’s able to upgrade his ship through the story making it more powerful. Fox can fight on foot well, however he’s better when in vehicles.
Friends: Fox is close friends with Slippy Toad and Falco Lombardi and has a strong respect for Peppy Hare. The four of them form the second incarnation of the Star Fox team and work well together with each member offering a different skill to the team. Slippy with his mechanical knowledge works on the equipment the Star Fox team uses, building a lot of the vehicles such as the Blue Marine and Landmaster as well as analysing the boss’s shields allowing the rest of the team to see how much shielding they have left. Peppy would use his years of experience to advise Fox on what to do against various bosses as well as tricks to use when flying such as the barrel roll. Falco being on par with Fox in flying skill would be effective in fighting many of the smaller enemies whilst Fox focuses on the boss of each stage. Falco’s temperament could cause him to get bored and go off sometimes, but he’d often show up to help Fox when he felt he needed it. Slippy on the other hand often stays the most loyal to Fox, only leaving once in the series when he falls in love and gets engaged to Amanda, although even then he’s usually the first in most paths to return to help Fox. Peppy eventually retires from the Star Fox team, for a time taking a role giving advice from the Great Fox, before being appointed the new General of the Cornerian army after General Pepper retires. General Pepper is very trusting of Star Fox and is willing to pay them for the work they do as well as trusting Fox to take him down when he’s infected and mind controlled by aparoids. A new addition to the team is Krystal, the lone survivor of planet Cerinia who travels to Sauria to answer a distress call but gets captured. Fox saves her and following from this she joins team Star Fox filling Peppy’s role of giving advice on how to defeat bosses, however rather than basing it on years of experience, Krystal uses telepathy powers to find the enemy’s weakness. Krystal and Fox get along very well, however Fox can get too overprotective which has caused issues between them before, which can lead to a lot of different paths in Star Fox Command, with them either getting together again, staying apart or in one case Krystal becoming a bounty hunter on the outskirts of the Lylat System called Kursed who Fox doesn’t even recognise years later.
The final member of the Star Fox team is ROB 64, a robot who can control the Great Fox and was inherited along with it by Fox after being commissioned for his Father. ROB fell into disrepair similar to the Great Fox during the mission to Sauria, however following that he saw the same level of upgrades the Great Fox had during the Aparoid invasion. ROB is the team member who has been with Fox the longest, being the only remaining member of the team with Fox at the start of Star Fox Command. Due to the original Great Fox being destroyed and him being put into the new Great Fox he underwent somewhat of a personality change, becoming more sarcastic towards Fox, but he still did his duties as required and throughout his time on the team got along well with them. One of Fox’s other friends from the Flight Academy is Bill Grey who remained part of the Cornerian army. The two are always pleased to meet and work together when given the chance and Bill will often turn up to give Fox a helping hand as thanks. During his adventures on Sauria Fox makes friends with Tricky, an Earthwalker who is heir to the throne of his tribe who Fox can find annoying but also grows fond of. There are others who join team Star Fox in some cases that are more involved with other members of the team, such as Katt Monroe who was part of Falco’s old gang, Lucy Hare Peppy’s daughter and Amanda, Slippy’s fiancé.
Enemies/Rivals: Fox’s archenemy is Andross, the one who’s responsible for the disappearance of his Father and whose army his team’s first major mission is against. Despite being Fox’s archenemy, in the 64 timeline Andross is only ever the antagonist for two of the games, however his legacy goes on far longer, with most threats Fox faces after being influenced by or the results of Andross’s actions. Fox has also faced many other enemies over the years, with him battling against General Scales on Sauria, Aparoids in Star Fox Assault and finally the Anglar Empire in Star Fox Command, with only the Aparoids being a threat not somehow caused or resulting from Andross’s actions. The Aparoids were likely the largest threat Fox faced as they would take control of other characters and make Fox have to fight them, such as General Pepper and the Cornerian ground forces as well as using Fox’s memory of his Father against him, which if anything just made his drive to destroy them even stronger. Also of note in the Anglar Forces is a specific character, Octoman who often fights Slippy in various routes and sometimes is able to mind control him.
Probably the foe most hated by Fox even more than Andross however is Pigma Dengar, an ex-member of the Star Fox team who betrayed James McCloud and joined Andross due to his greed. Pigma is part of Star Wolf, a group of mercenaries who are seen as the closest in skill to the Star Fox team and led by Wolf O’donnell. Pigma’s piloting skills aren’t on Fox or Falco’s level, however he is cunning and can still put up a fight, often targeting Peppy. Wolf is Fox’s main rival in the series both due to being in the same position as Fox as the leader of Star Wolf as well as being almost on Fox’s level when it comes to piloting skill. Wolf is driven to defeat Fox and seems to have had a fierce rivalry with James McCloud, sometimes mentioning him to Fox, and if he defeats Fox sometimes telling him he doesn’t live up to his Father implying some respect. It has in some cases been suggested that Pigma influenced Wolf with regards to forming his own team and going against Fox, which is supported by Wolf on some occasions allying with Fox after having kicked Pigma out of the team, however he often justifies this by saying it’s because he’s the one who’s going to take Fox out, rather than the threat they’re facing. Leon Powalski is another member of Star Wolf and probably the loyalist to Wolf since he is the only one who remained in all it’s incarnations. He seems to love to torture and kill his enemies and revels in being a deadly assassin, which it seems is why he feels staying with Wolf is the best use of his skills as his missions allow him to do what he loves. When it comes to Fox, Leon isn’t overly interested as he prefers to take on Falco, with them both being similarly close to Fox and Wolf’s level of skill. He has however engaged Fox in dogfights many times. Andrew Oikonny is the nephew of Andross and believes himself therefore a very important person. It seems Andrew is part of Star Wolf simply due to being related to Andross and he is arguably the worst pilot of the team, which is why he tends to go after Slippy who’s often seen as the worst Arwing pilot in the Star Fox team. Despite his bluster and lack of piloting skills, Andrew has shown he is capable of some cunning and tactics. Following him leaving the Star Wolf team he rallies Andross’s remaining forces to stage a rebellion and is able to give the Cornerian army trouble until Star Fox arrives to help them. Andrew still often ends up being just a sideshow to other villains however, despite his ego leading him to believe he’s the successor to Andross. Finally following Pigma being kicked out of the team due to his greed and Andrew seemingly due to Wolf getting sick of his boasting despite his poor pilot skills, as well as perhaps in order to attempt to create his own empire, the Star Wolf team got a new team member called Panther Caroso. Panther is conceited and considers himself a ladies man, flirting often with Krystal during their encounters, however he also seems to be more of a skilled pilot than Andrew and possibly Pigma which is a good thing for the team as there are only three of them remaining when he joins. Due to his constant flirting with Krystal Panther is arguably the only Star Wolf member besides Wolf who has a specific rivalry with Fox, although Fox tends to see him more as an irritation than anything.
Crossovers with other Smash characters: Fox himself has not really appeared in other series which are in Smash Bros, with only one specific appearance from him being cut in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga where he would have appeared to try a Starbeans Coffee that was brewed before having to rush off when contacted by Slippy who’s in trouble. Fox would give the Mario Bros a Gold Ring from his series as payment for the coffee. One other unused cameo is that in Ocarina of Time there exists an Arwing as an unused enemy in the files, which will fly around and shoot at Link. Whilst this is not specifically Fox, the Arwing is most heavily associated with him. It’s believed this was a placeholder for the boss Volvagia due to their similar movements in the air. The Star Fox series has made references to the F-Zero series, to the point it’s possible the two might be connected with them using similar technology such as the G-Diffuser, as well as one of the endings of Star Fox Command having Fox and Falco retire from being mercenaries and becoming G-Zero racers. One other notable appearance in Star Fox Command is Octoman, a member of the Anglar Empire who is possibly the same character as the Octoman in the F-Zero series, with them looking very similar and having the same name. Finally, whilst this is not Fox specifically, there is a character in the F-Zero series called James McCloud who is very clearly a reference to the Star Fox series, although he is a human who wears an outfit similar to the Star Fox uniform and sunglasses similarly to James McCloud as well as piloting an F-Zero racer that looks similar to an Arwing.
Why this game?
It’s rather simple in this case, although I personally like the majority of the games in the series despite their clear flaws, this game is simply the best in the series as well as the most definitive. It is the start of the longest timeline, the Starfox 64 timeline as well as being considered the best version of the main Star Fox story of Fox battling Andross’s forces, with more characters than the SNES timeline’s version of the story and generally considered better gameplay than it and Star Fox Zero. The only issue with the game when it comes to it representing Fox McCloud in Smash Bros is that it’s not a game where you can play as Fox on foot (apart from the multiplayer but that’s another matter) however despite that, this is the game that I feel represents Fox McCloud best.
There is one other matter, as to why I picked the N64 version rather than the 3DS remake. I think the 3DS remake is a really great update of the game, to the point that I really thought they could reboot the franchise with it as a starting point rather than what they ended up doing with Zero being another reboot of Star Fox 64 (which of course was a reboot of the SNES Star Fox) Honestly, I’d played the remake on 3DS a lot, which is why I decided for this playthrough, I wanted to stick with the original version instead. Also, the voices were all redone in the 3DS remake, and whilst I don’t think they’re bad, the original version is so well known as well as a big part of my childhood at this point, which is why it’s what I wanted to go with.
My past with this game.
So this game is another case where I didn’t own it myself for a fair bit in my childhood but would play it at my Cousin’s house. This was probably one of the best games for this sort of thing as it’s not very long and had multiple pathways you could take through it, meaning we could often do a full playthrough during my visit and play the game again another time without it being a repeat of the same game. Due to playing the game with others a lot of the lines became what they are still to this day online which is now usually referred to as memes. We’d love quoting the bosses, Star Fox, Star Wolf and Andross repeatedly, with it being one of the few games I’d played at the time with voice acting beyond grunts and the occasional word. Eventually I got the game myself and played it a lot, although I didn’t complete every pathway for a long time. There was one mission which would always give me trouble when it came to the alternate path to the point that I don’t think I ever managed to play through that pathway until many years later.
I do have a memory of another strange train of thought I had regarding this series where I was mistaken. This was the second Star Fox game I’d played as I owned the first on the SNES. Due to a copyright issue in Europe, the first Star Fox game was called Star Wing in the UK and Star Fox 64 was called Lylat Wars, which personally I actually prefer to Star Fox 64, maybe because of Nostalgia, but really, I just find it a more interesting name. Since Star Fox 64 was the second game I played in the series, and I didn’t really have the concept of remakes in my mind at that time, I believed Lylat Wars was a sequel to Star Wing, and due to the plot of Lylat Wars, it led me to believe for a long time that Star Wing actually starred James McCloud. I’d never gotten very far at all in Star Wing so I believed that that game ended with the character you played as (Fox, who I thought was James) being captured as is the backstory of Lylat Wars. It’s odd as I knew the original Star Fox team was meant to be made up of James, Peppy and Pigma, but that part for some reason I never really thought about. Perhaps when I think about it even though I didn’t know the term, I believed that that was a retcon and James was still meant to be based on the SNES version of Fox for some reason. There were also secrets in the game I never unlocked and found out about in gaming magazines which my friends would say were just fakes as they were sure they’d beaten all that was in the game, things such as Fox wearing sunglasses and being able to play on-foot in multiplayer. To this day I haven’t actually unlocked the on-foot option in multiplayer or Fox with sunglasses, although as I don’t have anyone who’d play Star Fox 64 multiplayer with me it’s not really something I’ve wanted to get anyway at this point. Beyond this, when it comes to my history with the game, I suppose the only other thing is the remake on 3DS which I’ve mentioned earlier. I remember being really excited for it as the short gameplay with multiple routes was ideal for a handheld, and it turned out to be a really great version which I’d personally recommend.
My Smash Playthrough.
This was a fairly short playthrough compared to a fair few others. I cannot remember clearly what routes I played through, although I believe I did the easy route the first time, taking on Meteo, Fichina, Sector X, Titania, Bolse and finally Venom 1. Of these stages I don’t remember having any real issues and as they’re easy I find them fairly fun missions to blast through, with my personal favourite being the battle against Star Wolf on Bolse as it’s harder than the first battle with them, but not to the level of another encounter with them in another route, so it’s not overly frustrating. Titania is probably the most notable stage in this route as it’s the only one where Fox uses another vehicle, being the Landmaster. Of the two Landmaster stages, this one is the one I find more dull, with the boss not being very interesting. My second route I believe was Meteo, Katina, Solar, Macbeth, Bolse and Venom 1 again. This is probably my favourite run overall with the highlights being Katina where you take part in a large-scale battle with Cornerian forces against Venomian fighters, as well as meeting with Bill, with the stage being full of a lot of memorable quotes. Macbeth is another highlight of this route due to it being the best Landmaster stage, with the Forever Train that you gradually have to reach the front of making for an interesting stage element, as well as it’s driver being full of more great quotes. Solar is probably the worst stage in this route, mostly due to the gimmick where flying too low causes the Arwing to take constant damage due to the heat. With that said, Solar does provide an interesting idea and if you’re able to shoot down the various rocks being thrown all over the place you can replenish health very often, so it’s not that bad of a stage.
The final and of course most difficult of the routes is the one I left for last, Sector Y, Aquas, Zoness, Sector Z, Area 6 and finally Venom 2. Sector Y is a fun stage and I’ve always personally liked the Space Armada type of stages in Star Fox, so flying past various giant battleships is a highlight to me, along with the Gundam inspired enemies you battle. Aquas I always used to dislike, but now I feel it’s not really as difficult as I used to believe so I don’t mind it as much. It’s the only stage in the series that uses the Blue Marine, Star Fox’s submarine, which acts fairly similarly to the Arwing, just with torpedoes replacing the bombs and being a key requirement of the stage due to lighting up the way. Zoness I have mixed feelings on. I actually like the stage quite a bit, but the requirement in order to carry on the hardest route and not end up going to Macbeth is one which kept me from fully beating the game for a very long time. There are searchlights that you have to take out and if you miss one, you’ll not be able to go to Sector Z. It’s probably the toughest optional path to get in my experience. Sector Z due to this was a stage that was always enigmatic to me, mostly as I’d seen every other stage, it felt like the only content I’d not seen for a long time. The mission is the only one heavily featuring the Great Fox, with you having to take down missiles that are approaching the ship. It’s definitely a unique mission and it’s fun having the Great Fox appear outside of a cutscene, it can be quite difficult though and I did slip up once or twice. Area 6 is one of my favourite stages in the game, but at the same time the boss is one of my least favourites. The stage is a lot of fun with you fighting your way through the defences set up in Venom airspace, with a lot of great quotes from the enemies as they go from believing you don’t stand a chance to gradually losing their cool as you break through more and more of their defences. It’s a really great adrenaline rush of a stage. Finally, there’s Venom 2 which features a really difficult dogfight with Star Wolf, using their new ships the Wolfen II which interestingly only appear in this battle in the whole series. I’ll go more into this when it comes to the bosses, but the battle with them was probably more frustrating for me than the final boss, with it taking me quite a few attempts to finally take them down.
The bosses are very memorable in this game, definitely helped by a lot of them being voiced and having memorable quotes as you battle them. Due to this, some of the few bosses that don’t have a voice tend to not stick in my mind as much, such as the bio weapon bosses of Solar, Aquas and Titania. Other than that every other boss I’d say is memorable and a lot of fun to fight, with my personal favourite being the Forever Train, especially due to the alternate method of defeating him which involves setting the train to the wrong track, with the boss suddenly realising he can’t stop himself from speeding into the weapons factory resulting in a massive explosion. The boss I mentioned earlier of Area 6 is another one which isn’t voiced, and can be very frustrating to battle due to a lot of the methods of causing damage to it being slightly down to luck with the battle against it sometimes lasting quite a while if you mess up too much. I had quite a difficult time with it and always have done, although it’s definitely not an ridiculously hard fight. Star Wolf’s battle on the hard route at Venom is probably the most difficult in the game as they have very good shielding which prevents your lock on attacks as well as bombs from being able to damage them. They are also a lot more manoeuvrable and harder to hit, with you having to hit them with standard laser shots to be able to do any real damage to them, which when you add on their habit of doing somersaults a lot more than before, it can be difficult to track them down and hit them with constant fire. Wolf or any other members of the team who are gunning for you specifically are relentless on this stage.
One last thing I’d like to note before going on to the final boss is the music. There are a lot of great tracks in this game, which when I played when I was younger I didn’t really appreciate, and it wasn’t until a lot of them were remixed in Star Fox Assault that I realised just how good a lot of them were. My personal favourites are the boss themes, Star Wolf’s theme, Aquas, Area 6 and my absolute favourite is Zoness, which is probably why I like that stage overall, despite the irritating searchlight challenge. I also quite like the victory theme for each stage, it’s actually probably one of my favourite victory themes in videogames with its triumphant atmosphere.
When it comes to Andross, there’s two versions. They both start off similarly, with Andross’s giant head appearing from the shadows laughing, then his hands appear with them being the first things you need to take out. Following this he starts inhaling you which can either be avoided by pulling as hard to the side as you can, or firing a bomb into his mouth which causes it to blow up in there. Once Andross takes enough damage from shots to his eyes, his face will explode, in the easy path this reveals a robotic form for his head, which is frantic but not too difficult to defeat, with the ending of the game revealing it was a decoy and Andross is still alive. The hard path ends with a different result following Andross’s first form, with the reveal of his brain, with his eyeballs attached through some sort of electric field. Unlike the easy path boss, this now becomes an all-range mode boss, with Fox having to target the eyes first and following their destruction, he must target the brain’s medulla. Andross’s brain will teleport if the other parts of the brain are hit, and move around the area. If Fox flies into the Brain’s tentacles, they’ll capture him and start ripping the Arwing apart, losing its wings and damaging it’s shielding. Overall this is definitely the harder of the Andross bosses, but other than some annoyances with the brain’s movements and managing to hit it, he’s not the hardest boss in the game. It appears based on other bosses Andross is responsible for such as the various bio-weapons that this isn’t a robotic form but is actually what Andross’s physical form has become, so with his destruction Andross is truly dead it would seem, which is the canon ending for the game. With his last breath Andross tells Fox he’s going to take him down with him, but then Fox hears a voice. This part of the game is probably one of the most iconic in gaming and I always enjoy playing through it, with James McCloud telling Fox not to give up and leading him through the exploding base. Fox reaches the surface victorious, with James seeming to have disappeared, leaving it unclear if it was his ghost, he’s actually alive or Fox simply imagined him. Following this comes the ending sequence, with a great music track and many nice shots of the Great Fox travelling back to and arriving at Corneria, then the team running as the sun sets and the Great Fox rises in the background before flying off. The final shot of the game is of the bill owed to the Star Fox Team by the Conerian Army, with General Pepper commenting on the amount, which changes based on your performance. Overall it was a blast to play through this, and because of how this game works it’s one I always have an probably always will come back to do a playthrough of from time to time.
Specific aspects about the game relating to Fox in Smash.
When it comes to Fox’s portrayal in the Super Smash Bros series, it’s important to note that he was one of the original roster who had a moveset entirely invented for him, since he had made no playable appearance outside of his vehicles at the time, except for in Lylat Wars multiplayer. In Lylat Wars Multiplayer he carries a large over the shoulder laser cannon or rocket launcher of some kind and controls sort of like the Landmaster, so there really wasn’t much to draw from. A fair few of Fox’s moves did draw upon aspects of the Star Fox series however, with his reflector playing a similar role to the Arwing’s barrel roll, which can deflect shots taken at it. Fox’s blaster is drawn from artwork for Star Fox 64 where Fox holds one, although the only shot of a character holding one in-game is James McCloud during the backstory told in the introduction of the game. Fox’s other moves aren’t really based on anything from the Star Fox series and are original to Super Smash Bros. When it comes to Final Smashes Fox has had throughout the series, this is probably the closest Fox has to any moves that are based upon Star Fox 64, with his original Final Smash calling a Landmaster, which can shoot and roll similarly to in the series. His most recent Final Smash, Team Star Fox, has Fox call in his wing mates and a targeting reticule will appear before him with three Arwings flying at it. If an enemy gets hit by it, Fox will jump into his own Arwing and tell his group to open fire, with all four Arwings firing upon the foe with double green lasers. Falco shares this Final Smash, but Fox’s version has the team firing with synchronisation, which reflects his status as the team leader. What is important to note regarding Star Fox 64 however, are the designs of the vehicles used in these Final Smashes. The Landmaster’s design in its appearances as a Final Smash is not the design it has in Star Fox 64, but the design it used in Star Fox Assault, which is a lot more advanced looking than the original. The Arwing’s appearance in Fox’s Final Smash is also not the one from Star Fox 64, although it is similar, but it is in fact the Arwing from Star Fox Zero. Finally Fox’s only appearances on-foot have him with a fairly different design in both cases to the ones he uses in Super Smash Bros, and in the case of Star Fox Adventures have him fighting with Krystal’s Staff rather than his blaster and other gear. I guess all that can really be said in conclusion here is that there’s not really a setup of any kind that fits closely with Fox’s portrayal in Super Smash Bros in Lylat Wars.

REVIEW
Gone Too Far by Debra Webb
Devlin & Falco #2
I have a feeling that this is a series better read in order and I did not read the first book in the series leaving me feeling that I didn’t really know the main characters as well as I should have. I ended up skimming to find out the gist of the story but must admit I did not read word for word – and there were a lot of words in this book with over 400 pages. I felt that the story could have been edited down a good bit to make it tighter and flow at a faster pace.
This book had more than one storyline that eventually overlapped by the end of the book. It begins with a gut-wrenching prologue set five days before the story picks up in real time. Next up is a murder to be solved and that is for Devlin & Falco to sleuth out. Add in an issue with Tori, Kerri Devlin’s daughter, that is much deeper and more deadly than expected. AND, there is another thread of a woman who was an undercover agent who has lost part of her memory and her story also overlaps the others. There are a number of questionable characters, red herrings, evil doers, problems to solve, murderers to suss out, and…more. The threads of the various plots didn’t come together till the end and some of them left me scratching my head.
So, this book is a mixed bag for me. I could see the way it was plotted and the way the story was being told would work for many but it did not draw me in, hold my attention, have me reading and hanging on every word, and eager to read the next book in the series. I had trouble relating to the characters and am not sure if that, again, is due to not having read the first book in the series.
Did I enjoy this book? Not so much, it was “okay”
Would I read more by this author? Maybe, if the blurb really caught my attention
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.
2-3 Stars

On Wednesdaze:
In the middle afternoon today I was taking an Uber ride from Richmond Hills, Queens to Midtown, Manhattan. Fifteen to twenty minutes prior there was a New York downpour, brief but powerful nonetheless. I had just gotten off the set of Law and Order: Special Crimes Unit watching a friend film a cameo. It was awesome to be in that environment, “The Village,” they called it—the area in the back where the executive producer, producer, writer and script supervisor are huddled under an open tent watching the footage and breathing huge sighs of relief when much needed regular and strawberry lemonade arrives to quench their thirst. The banter is an exercise in detail; every little thing needs to tie in, be coherent, and stay in line with every additional cut. If a word is misplaced it’s not necessarily a big deal unless the word was of exceptional value, however, some words are absolutely necessary and if you say them in one take but don’t say them in the other, potential problems can arise. So many things that you might think aren’t very important can be the cause of an extra take. For example, if the background is shouting out words that take the attention away from a particular character, pulling the focus onto someone else, you might get an eye roll and a look of exasperation from several village members. On one take, in particular, the producer noticed that the background extras weren’t walking right, didn’t look like they were just passing by in the suburbs, and as a result would be moved to a different part of the shot and would be asked to do less. The little details, I’m telling you.
On set, you might run into actors you’ve seen before. For me, I recognized the man that was playing the father in the episode and funnily enough I remembered him from “The Sopranos,” where he played the priest. His name was Paul Schulze. I can still hear him say “Carmella” to Edie Falco’s character. We chopped it up and introduced ourselves to each other. One of the things we discussed was the passing of long time actor, Frank Vincent, of Billy Bats fame (Goodfellas) and Phil Leotardo (The Sopranos) and Pop Corelli (Do the Right Thing). How many awesome lines did he deliver in his career? “Now go get ya fuckin’ shinebox” and “This an antique there, hotshot.” He was a mafia movie staple, but he was also in a couple of Spike Lee films. Well respected across the industry. So anyway, Paul is talking to me about this movie that he had done with Frank Vincent called, “Grind.” He spoke fondly of the movie even if he was giving me a clear look of admittance that it wasn’t very good. He jogs down memory lane a bit and remembers a moment towards the end when Vincent’s character—his father in the movie—is dead and Paul’s character begins to show lots of emotion over his dead body. He goes on to hug him and give him a kiss on his lips, overwhelmed with the sudden events. When “cut!” was yelled and Vincent and Schulze have a moment away Vincent says, “Hey, that was a great scene, it was so good, but don’t ever kiss me on my lips, again.” Schulze started to crack up as he remembered the quote; it was great to hear the story from him. That’s what I had heard from other people, too. Vincent, who always seemed to play the serious, tough, bully type, was a hard ass on screen, but a kind soul off of it. He wasn’t a mega star, but I feel like movie aficionados across the board will carry on his performances forever.
After the set broke down my friend and I split up—he had to go make another flight—and I got in an Uber that said it would take an hour. It was cool to drive around an area that I wasn’t familiar with, though. It was the Richmond Hills area. Anyway, so I’m in the back seat of the car minding my own business (sometimes I don’t feel the desire to talk), but then I struck up a conversation with the driver, who was an older guy born and raised in Long Island. I’ll remember the trip because we started to gain some speed on the Long Island Expressway, which exposed a wonderful skyline that I hadn’t really got the chance to appreciate in its entirety since my move. In my life I feel like I had only seen the skyline in full when I was taking a shuttle bus from Newark airport. The view on that route isn’t so bad. This trip illuminated a skyline that looked endless and felt larger than life. It gave me that full, dense Metropolis feel with the Empire State Building and 432 Park Avenue standing above all the rest. No matter how close we got, the buildings seemed to get bigger and taller to the point where you actually feel like the tops are scraping the sky. Through our mutual appreciation of the skyline that stretched beyond view, I mentioned Chicago and the view of that skyline coming from the south side on I-57/I-90/I-94 (one of those) and how it looks like this mystical island in the distance that becomes more incredible the closer you get to it. I was amazed that he had never been to Chicago, but my amazement didn’t last too long after he started to talk about New York. He was a homer, for sure. I mean, this guy knew everything about New York and all there was to know about the history of each neighborhood. It wasn’t that he had nothing nice to say about Brooklyn, but he said twenty or so odd years ago and any time before that, Brooklyn was to be avoided at all costs. Bushwick, Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill, Ft. Greene, you name it. They might be cool and hipster know, but back then they were extremely unsafe. He continued with bad reports on the Lower East Side and anything above 110th St. Prostitutes, drugs, black markets, were prominent in Hells Kitchen and The Meatpacking and the Heights used to be unbelievably dangerous. Something that he mentioned that kind of surprised me was the reasoning for the bulletproof glass that separates the backseat passenger and the driver in a taxi cab. Apparently in the 70’s it was disturbingly commonplace for taxi drivers to get shot.
…
I took a run before the George Washington bridge closed and went from the Heights to Ft. Lee. It’s become a regular run for me lately and the plane stays pretty level. It got pretty dark though, so I had to make sure to stay visible amongst the traffic. About half way through the space on side of the street was getting thin and there was an oncoming car, so I took a little loop and briefly walked on this yard, but my face was met with a full cobweb that sent me spitting and wiping my eyes and brushing off any potential spider that had gotten on my face. The space on the side street opened up, but as soon as a I stepped down there was a “YUGE” dead possum that looked like it was freshly killed, which sent me into another panic because at that point I was convinced I was entering haunted territory. The garbage cans looked like they were trembling, the lights from the traffic felt brighter. I was temporarily losing my mind for a minute so I sprinted back to my apartment in a drenched sweat. I might have to avoid that route next time.
…
On the way home after seeing a play tonight I stopped at the laundromat where I would drop my clothes off when I lived about six blocks over from where I live now. In most cases people would just adjust to their new spot and go the laundromat that’s a block or two away (laundromats are like Starbucks). I couldn’t do it though. The great thing about New York is you can feel like a regular anywhere. The laundry ladies and I always joke around. There favorite thing to make fun of and ask about is why I put a big plastic garbage bag on top of my dirty clothes when I hand it in to be dropped off and I always tell them that I run and have to keep the running clothes separate. The bag on top of the hamper is to protect them from the running smell which, if you ask Erick Pape, he’ll tell you is a frightening “sweet” smell that really isn’t that sweet at all. By now it’s a running joke, but they seem to enjoy forgetting, so I can reveal the reason all over again. It’s a little thing—yes—but to me it’s worth the five or six extra blocks carrying my clothes back and forth.
The little things. They’re always worth it.
