The Hug Booth

I had a dream that all the sides were in college though they didn't really know each other. And yet most of the campus had at least heard about Patton.

"You mean the hug guy?" people would say when talking about him.

In Patton's free time, he had a booth set up somewhere on campus and he'd go sit there. The booth advertised 'free hugs'. I don't know if the college sanctioned it, and it was speculated by the students a lot over whether that was allowed. But all the students, and probably the staff too, recognized how much of a good thing Patton's booth was.

The booth would pop up in different places throughout the week, but always in the more populated areas of campus. People started making posts about it online, keeping track of where the hug guy's booth was that day, or just to rant excitedly about how they saw him. He quickly became a legend and people raved about his hugs and how nice he was. People started recognizing him when he was just walking around campus and they would shout excitedly, "Hug guy! Oh my God, it's the hug guy!" And Patton would look up with a surprised smile and he'd offer his arms up in a hug and most people would run giggling to him.

Some people would find him frequently to get a hug. Others had to work up the courage. There were far too many that, once Patton's arms were around them, they would burst into tears. And Patton would take it in stride, rub their back and hold them tighter and tell them, "It's okay, I've got you."

I remember someone asked him one time why he did what he did. Why the booth? Why hugs? Why almost every day of the week was he out there?

"Some people really need a hug," he answered simply. "They just don't know how to ask for it."
