I awaken again. I rub my neck, feeling along it, expecting a rope burn from the strangulation. I find nothing. Just another dream. Again. Awesome.
I sit up and check the time. 9:00 AM. Early wake up today. I stretch my arm, crack by spine like a psychopath, and start getting everything ready to go. I have nothing to do today. Good. More time to study the book.
I make my way back to the makeshift workplace, where the book lies… open. Could have sworn I left it closed. Well, guess it doesn’t really matter. The first page was once again evidence that the book was quite sentient and active.
‘H3llo ag in, pol.’
“Hello, book. Got another story?”
‘Not y t.”
“Really? You need to research?”
‘Im n0t omn pot nt.’
“Yeah, cool.”
‘Inst3 d, we coul just tal ’
…odd. I could go and get groceries instead… but, that sounds painfully boring. I think my time will be better spent here. Who needs food anyway…
“Well buddy, what’s up?”
‘Wh t were u dream ng about?’
…so… what do I say? I’m not quite keen on telling this probably cursed item my dreams. But, I get the feeling this thing isn’t quite a quitter. So…
“Oh nothing much. I can’t really remember too much of them really. Just something that involved some running… I think.”
I turn the page, and the book says nothing. I turn the page again, and the book finally responded.
‘Int resting. Go d improv sk lls. Nic ly done.’
Shit. This is gonna suck, isn’t it.
‘I kn w a lot abo t you, pa , and I don t much lik secr ts.’
…oh. Okay. …gift horse.
“Well… you caught me. Well done buddy!”
‘I kn w. Im v ry smart.’
Ah good, an ego to mess with.
“So… got a story yet?”
‘I do.’
“Mind telling it?”
‘I w ll. Let s beg n.”
