“The mysterious pit of Ilvir is reputed to be the home of Harn’s most bizarre inhabitant, the deity Ilvir.”  Eric Hotz’s art for Hârnmaster added to the setting’s consistent historical feel, borrowing from Norman, Saxon, and Viking material culture (Araka-Kalai, Columbia Games, 1987)

Building off our recent episode on Chivalry & Sorcery, this week the Vintage RPG Podcast looks at another realistic medieval RPG world, N. Robin Crossby's Hârn. Unlike C&S, though, Hârn was originally created as a system agnostic setting. That'd change later, with the HârnMaster system, but with or without the rules, the Hârn remains one of the the most ambitious and stunningly detailed ever created. Let's take a look around, eh?

Are tou familiar with MYFAROG - Mythic Fantasy Role-playing Game? What do you think about its system?
Overall, the system has a similar vibe to HârnMaster or Rolemaster in that it’s heavy on simulation, especially in combat.  Also like Rolemaster, there are a lot of tables for randomly determining results of various specific things.
I think there can be value in simulative rules, but MYFAROG comes across as pretty clunky in execution, which is probably one of the reasons there are so many layers of optional rules.  HârnMaster is one of the most simulation-heavy FRPGs around and aspects of it border on unplayable because of how painfully slow it is in practice.
I think MYFAROG could benefit from an analysis of its systems and subsystems for ways to unify mechanics while achieving the same goals in terms of (e.g.) combat feel.  Mechanics don’t exist for their own sake, but to produce something through their use and interaction with other elements of the game.
For comparison, one of the best changes between 2nd Edition AD&D and 3E was the move to a unified d20 “higher is better” system for resolving weapon attacks, saving throws, and skill checks.  I will go so far as to say that if you transplanted the core d20 mechanic straight into AD&D, the game’s various conflicts would resolve in virtually the exact same way with smoother gameplay in practice.

This article describes the order's origin and history, current situation, doctrines and practices, and organization.

HM3 Weaponcreaft (pdf 540 kB)
