Rereading the scholomance (yes again, shush) and I’m a bit obsessed with the differences between Ophelia Lake and Gwen Higgins. Strict malia vs strict mana. Lives in a luxury enclave apartment vs lives in a yurt in the middle of nowhere. The way that they raised their kids.
Mostly though it’s their worldview that hits me, because they’re DEAD OPPOSITES. We spend three books being told that Gwen gives as freely as a person can, even when logic says she could stand to take more in return, and when she’s in need she just kind of blindly trusts in the goodness of humanity and the universe at large. Even when summoning the sutras, it’s the same pattern! She didn’t name a price, trusting that the world would be kind enough when asking her to pay!
On the other hand, Ophelia is a full maleficer. She takes even when she absolutely doesn’t need to- she has New York’s mana supply at her fingertips and STILL drains the people in her lab every day. And when confronted with the horror of mals being made when people use malia, she defends it by saying that everyone uses malia anyway- she builds her life on the assumption that the world will be selfish in the end, the exact opposite of the way Gwen banks on it being kind.
I just think it’s so fascinating the way that these two women are foils, even as El is trying to set up her and Orion as the ones truly balancing each other out. Every time she says that she’s balancing out her mom’s goodness, I need to shake her because 1) honey you are every bit as good as your mom, you’re just angrier, and 2) OPHELIA is balancing out your mom, you just don’t get to know it until after you survive graduation!!!

Scholomance brick realization: Star-glasses. They’re star-glasses, they’re Galadriel’s star-glasses. Gwen Higgins’ famous mana storage crystals, glowing bright; Gwen Higgins the healer in the forest who when she has nothing else to give gives hope, who is a HUGE Lord of the Rings nerd—she modeled those crystals off of the Star-glass; I KNOW it.
I bet the incantation for her full-power burst of healing/stunning/clean-scouring light is “A Elbereth Gilthoniel.”

Going back to the Golden Enclaves, do you ever wonder if Gwen purposefully gentle parented el because of the prophecy ( she was probably doing it already but I think she got really hell bent on it ) as a F U to great-grandmother and the rest of the family who just accepted that el will become a big evil wizard five minutes after meeting cute baby el because the family Oracle said so. And also for the option of an off switch so that even if el is in her prime ( like she is in TGE ) Gwen can take away el's autonomy if she judges that it is the best option for el ( and everyone else but mostly her daughter ). And that is a scary sentence without context but as a reader u know that Gwen will only do that ( like she did in the book ) only once when it was necessary

Spellbreaker: A Scholomance Sequel
I finally finished my fic! I've been cranking away at it for 10 months like El translating the golden enclave spells when she should have been doing schoolwork, but it's finally done, yay!
Summary:
I wanted to be a wizard, but I guess I was doomed to be Grandma’s little monster instead.
El and Orion’s son is a mundane struggling to cope in the wizard world, but as Jacob gets older, his disdain for wizards’ treatment of mundanes grows like the distance between him and his parents. When Jacob develops a strange new ability, his maleficer grandmother preys on the opportunity. What side will Jacob land on? His decision could change the world of wizards and mundanes forever.
(This fic has a humorous tone similar to the original series, builds on the established magic system without contradicting any existing elements, and contains additional worldbuilding. )

Rating: Mature | Warnings: None
Fandom: Scholomance - Naomi Novik

ETA: I learned bookbinding and created a hardcover version of this fic! Here's a post with more pictures.

Imagine you're in school, fall in love, and get pregnant. He comes from wealth, so you think you and your baby are going to live a nice cushy life with your new man. Then he gets mauled by a bear. He's eaten right in front of you. You grieve for him. You go to his family, hoping they'll take you in, but they're awful and they want to harm your baby. So you end up raising her alone. It's tough being a single mother, but you do your best to love and protect her. She grows up and goes to school. The school is known for its bear attacks, but what can you do? It's a good school, and you can only protect her so much. Eventually your baby has to fend for herself. You can't help but worry though. The cell service is terrible but you manage to reach her and warn her to stay away from bears. She seems happy though, and even tells you she's made friends. Finally she graduates, and you're so happy she's safe. She brings her boyfriend home to meet you. It's the bear that ate your boyfriend.
Anyway, that's what happened to Gwen Higgins of the schomance series.

I didn’t mini-liveblog The Golden Enclaves like the others, so here are my key thoughts:
what ORPHEUS & EURYDICE BULLSHIT—
Tumblr media
Gwen Higgins MVP
at some point in her youth, Liesel watched the s6 finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, specifically the scene where Xander talks Dark Willow down from destroying the world with a heartfelt monologue about friendship and a symbolic yellow crayon, and thought, “Yeah, that could be me!”, and I love that for her. Get this woman a yellow crayon.
I can’t find it now but I saw a poll asking what your top ugly sobbing moment for these books was, so let the record note that mine was, “He would have taken you up the mountain and holding you in his arms, leapt.”
I was totally comfortable with El in ratty, unwashed clothes in the Scholomance itself, but now that she’s out, I DO keep involuntarily imagining her dressed as her honored inspiration Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way.
Orion gets to stay at the school that he and he alone loved his time at, and protect all the magical children of the world…there are going to be students, starting with the freshmen class they already saved, whose only experience of the Scholomance includes the fierce guardianship of Orion and El… 🥹 😭 ❤️ I hope he gets some lame but appropriate and punny title like “Custodian.”

I feel like a lot of El's directness is her rebelling against her mom's more go with the flow lifestyle, which as teenage rebellions go, could be a lot worse. Also, I just realized the other day, Gwen can't really be older than 36-38, right? She was 18 when she had El, who is now 18. Small wonder this situation has been so rough on her.
Orion, you know full well feeling sorry for yourself or whatever is going on in that coconut you call a brain is just calling down the Wrath of El.
Ohhh, no, Liu, honey, stay put, your girls are coming for you, and El has her Golden Stone sutras at the ready!
The opening moments of El furious as she does everything she can to try and drag Orion out of the Scholomance is giving me flashbacks of 1. Susan in Thief of Time outraged at Lubsang Ludd"You...𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘰!" and 2. Annabeth Chase judo-flipping Percy when they're reunited at New Rome.
Just the most powerful "How fucking dare you, you goddamn idiot!" Tsundere outrage, with the added spice of "That's 𝘮𝘺 goddamn idiot!" fueling the fire.
El, honey. What, did you think Liesel would do when you forgot to check in? She's not a wait and see person, she's more likely to kick the door down and demand an answer, you know that. (also I think the audiobook narrator got a better handle on Liesel's accent in this one, she sounds more consistently German now.)

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐂𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐌𝐀𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐎𝐖𝐍
I’ve been on a writing streak(/j) but Christmas time is approaching literally rapidly and I wanted to get this story out b4 December even began(shhh, it’s not too early for Christmas time.)
But this is a story of almost all my newsies oc’s, so I wanted to post this!!
NEWSIES - Jasper Wyatt, Rex Woodstone, Aria Higgins, Amelie Faux, Elizabeth Woods, Sparks, Forest, Willow Hughes, Phoenix winters, Gwen
Tumblr media
Snowfall. It was snowing. All the newsies were at Medda’s for this celebration of some sort. It was Christmas Eve. Everyone knew it was to be celebrated with friends and family. But Jasper was iffy on it. Yes, all the newsies had become family to him, but he still had his mother. That horrible mother that didn’t know how to control her own temper. Jasper sat outside for fresh air, his eyes closed as he enjoyed the silence.Well, somewhat silent. Of course, Christmas music played from the inside of the theater, but he didn’t expect it to get louder and for someone to come outside. An older boy, one dressed in rips and dark shades of black had. Jasper didn’t know him personally, but he did know who the boy was. The boy didn’t say a word to the brunette, but did acknowledge him with a hum. Placing a cigarette in between his lips, the teenager would then speak. “Why are you out here, kid? Shouldn’t you be inside havin’ fun?”
“It’s too loud in there. Plus, this is my first Christmas without my dad.” He’d explain softly, watching the boy lean against the wall, just beside him. Now, the boy understood that feeling. Of course he did. “Look, Kid. It’s one of the years without my brother. I get that, but he’d want you to have fun, don’t ya think?” The ravenette explained, looking down at him. The brunette boy didn’t reply for a little bit, looking up at the smoker with a small frown. This boy was in the right, Jasper couldn’t just give up because someone was gone, or dead. Letting out a sigh, the shorter boy pushed himself up, now leaning against the wall and looking up at the other. “...I guess.” He’d mumble softly, running a hand through his hair now. It’s a long story, Jasper knew this. He was tired. Well, tired of being alone, that was. A soft sigh escaped him before he spoke softly. “I’ll… be going inside now.” He mumbled softly, giving a small nod to the boy who remained outside now.
Inside, two girls stood alongside one another, speaking softly. Two blondes. Well, in reality there were three blondes in the building far as Jasper could see. He knew one of them personally, but not the other. Elizabeth Woods was a girl from the refuge, a girl that the younger boy had met during his time there. Even if it wasn’t pleasant there at all. He pushed past crowds of other newsies, his eyes focused on the ground below. He hated the loud noises. Surely, the theater had to have a balcony type area, so that’s exactly where he tried making his way up to. Sneaking himself away from everyone, away from the crowd, and onto the balcony. He crossed his arms, resting them onto the railing. A piano played softly in the background, the door opened just a tad bit. He wasn’t mad about them. Softly, hums would escape as his eyes closed. The piano was comforting, he enjoyed it. He hadn’t even noticed anyone making their way up, his mind focused on the words that would escape him.
“I’m wishing on a star, and trying to believe.” He’d hum out softly, his eyes staring up at the stars that shined just above the theater. Christmas… God, he wanted it to just be okay. For his father to come back and return back to him. “That even though it’s far, he’ll find me Christmas Eve.” By he, he meant Santa Claus. He’d never met Santa, he never knew if he would show up. He assumed that Santa was always busy, cause as far as he checked? He never came around. Though, that’s all Jasper wanted when Christmas came to town. If Christmas actually did come to town. He really wanted it to, it was the one thing he’d beg for in life. If he couldn’t spend Christmas with his father, he’d at least try and pray that in his dreams he could. Or if Santa tried to bring him something to resemble his father. He let out a sigh, but he had closed his eyes, leaning his head on his arms now.
The figure, who now had spoken aloud, looked at the brunette boy with a raised brow, until he processed it all. “The best time of the year, when everyone comes home…” This figure was familiar, another blonde though. Jasper looked over his shoulder to see a boy about his age, maybe a year older. This boy had blonde and black hair, well- streaks of black. Sparks, a kid from Queens, and a pain in the ass if you even asked any of Manhattan’s Newsies, but that’s a whole different story. “With all this Christmas Cheer, it’s hard to be alone!” He’d speak, letting a small smile form on his face. Gently, taking Jasper’s hand and pulling him along, back inside, he stood on the catwalk, motioning towards the stage where some of the newsies, such as Jack and Race were putting up a Christmas tree. “Putting up the Christmas tree with friends who come around, it’s so much fun when Christmas comes to town.” Sparks hummed, wrapping a gentle shoulder around Jasper’s shoulder now.
The shorter boy was confused for a moment or so, before Sparks would wave down at someone, a girl who looked almost the same to him. His sister, Jasper assumed. Making a “come here” motion with his free hand, the girl had quickly begun making her way up, handing what seemed to be a box wrapped in colorful paper to one of the other newsies. “Gwen! Help me out?” Sparks would call out to the older, who had climbed her way onto the catwalks, looking between her brother and the brunette haired boy. “Well… Presents for the children, wrapped in reds and greens!” Gwen had to stifle back a laughter as she spoke, now standing beside the two boys and motioning down towards the stage below, presents being placed underneath the Christmas tree Medda had instructed the boys to set up. Jasper would look at the blonde with black streets, a small frown appearing on his face. “All the things I’ve heard about, but never really seen..” With playful intention, Gwen rolled her eyes.
“No one will be sleeping on the night of Christmas Eve! Hoping Santa’s on his way!” The two siblings would sing together, letting out laughs right after. Sure, Gwen was getting older, but she still always had the Christmas spirit deep within her. She had to for her brother. Looking at the two, she’d then speak. “Now, c’mon! We’ve got a whole group of people who need this cheer!” She’d exclaim seconds later, turning to run back down to the rest of the newsies, laughter escaping her. “You heard my sister, let’s go!” Sparks then laughed out, taking Jasper’s wrist and gently tugging him down the catwalk, towards the stage. “Woah-! Easy-!” Jasper quickly squeaked out, following after the rather joyful boy. How could one have joy on an eventful day? Hell, he even took note that Romeo, of all people, didn’t have that much energy on him this day. As the three ended up back on the stage, Gwen and Sparks were still all smiley, but Jasper had a teensy one.
The three stood together, looking between all the newsies, and then each other. The girl on the piano had been focused, her eyes reading music and a boy helping flip the pages. “C’mon. Willow’s the best pianist I know besides one of her brothers!” Sparks spoke proudly, smiling as wide as he could now. Then again, Willow and Sparks had a love-hate relationship. It was only because of how annoying Sparks could be depending on the time of day. So, he dragged the two towards Willow, only smiling even wider when he’d gotten over. Willow only passed him a glance, her brow raising slightly. Though he’d only motion to continue playing with his hands, like a music instructor would. Surprised he even knows how that works. Rolling her eyes and continuing to play, Sparks began to softly hum again, as Gwen sang. “When Santa’s sleigh bells ring?” She sang softly, gently bumping shoulders with Jasper, as if to get a smile out of him. Though a smile didn’t form yet.
“I listen all around.” Jasper commented softly, shaking his head and looking up to Gwen. The song singing made a soft gasp escape someone. The leader of Midtown was a French lady, one who played a viola, or fiddler as they call it. She had it from back in France, but had quickly gone over to the group of children. Taking out the instrument and beginning to play alongside Willow, she’d only give a small smile to the two blondes and the brunette. The viola made a cheer escape Sparks, resulting in laughter right after as he sang shortly after his sister. “The herald angels sing!” He laughed, looking around the room. Newsies were still decorating the area, but one had caught his eye in particular. Romeo. He was sitting quietly, reading a journal he seemed to have kept after years and years. Raising a brow, the blonde quickly hopped off stage, jogging over to the boy who was known to flirt just to get a penny for a pape.
Tapping Romeo’s shoulder, Sparks held a worried expression. “You alright, mista?” He’d question, his accent not as thick as others. Romeo was unnaturally quiet, something he rarely ever was. Like Race, he would go hours talking, then late at night, he’d sleep like a rock. Unable to be woken up. Lifting his head slightly, Romeo would nod in response to the question. “Well, you don’t look it! You don’t have much Christmas Spirit in ya, do you?” Sparks continued to bother the older newsie, the one who had maybe a year or two left. “It’s a long story, kid. I’m fine.” Romeo would eventually grumble out, but felt the tug of his sleeve from the boy. “C’mon, mista! Join in the cheer! At least just for a little bit! Christmas is soon, we have to get the Spirit up and runnin! For Santa!” That warmed Romeo’s heart. How some kids still believed in Santa. Holding the journal close to his chest, he’d get up with a sigh. “Alright, kid. Lead the way.”
Whilst on the stage, of course, Jasper had continued to sing along with Gwen, who was still smiling and dancing slightly with the younger boy. “I never hear a sound.” He’d explain softly, responding back to the lyric Sparks had sang before hopping off the stage. The two musicians were looking at one another, enjoying the comfort that they were providing. Rex, the same boy from outside, was leaning against someone he saw as a brother figure, Phoenix. After all, the blonde and red haired boy had dated the ravenette’s brother before his passing. “And all the dreams of children, once lost, will now be found!” Gwen would sing, letting out soft laughs of joy and energy. This was fun. People were dancing together, singing, decorating! Even Aria, who hardly ever smiled, was grinning slightly! That’s a plus in Spark’s book! Gwen would gently kneel down, picking Jasper up and allowing him to sit on her shoulders. “That’s all I want when Christmas comes to town!”
Christmas in New York was absolutely freezing, especially for a bunch of Newsies. But thank god Medda’s theater was warm. After the whole singey song moment, which not many were mad about, and if they were, they were to suck it up, people had declared one thing. They’d all head home the following morning. It was already too late, and nobody wanted to walk all the way home, especially Forest, who was from Brooklyn. That’s across the bridge, and not even Medda wanted the poor boy to walk there in this weather, let alone without a coat. Willow still sat at the piano, teaching the Brooklyn boy a couple of simple notes as Newsies sat huddled together. Gwen and Sparks were huddled with a blanket over their shoulders, both of them freezing now. The doors were all closed, alongside windows. It was around the early mornings now, by the time they’d finished decorating it had hit around 10:30, which is why everyone just decided to stay. An idea had struck Amelie though, as she continued to play her viola softly besides the piano.
“Oh, oh! Is anyone allergic to anything? Midtown is not too far from here, and surely neither is Jacobi’s! I could bake us some treats!” She’d explain all excited. She loved baking. That’s something she’d never have a hatred for, unless she did it with someone she despised, which she would never. That was her strongsuit, just like music was Willow’s and her older brother. As people answered yes or no’s to her question, she’d only smile and make a mental note. Though once all answers were registered into her own mind, Medda spoke up softly, looking at all her dear children. “Newsies of New York, I want to thank you all for helping set up the theater for Christmas. Now, I know it is indeed early to set up… but we are always so busy during the winter holidays that we never have time to decorate for the season. So I want to thank you.”
She continued to speak, some newsies sitting in audience seats and others sitting on the ground. She’d gently tap all their heads, like a game of duck duck goose. But it was motherly nature, like a headcount. Even if there were hundreds of them in the theater at the time. “Because it is freezing out, I will allow you all the time to stay here for the next couple of days. It is far too cold for everyone. Unless you have family, then please, please, allow someone to walk you. Especially if you are on the other side of the bridge. Not to call anyone out.” She spoke, giving a teasing smile straight towards Forest, who sheepishly looked away. “Alongside all the ice and snow on the streets… That is not fun to deal with. So please, if you walk home tomorrow or days afterwards, please be careful.” She explained, eventually standing in the middle of all the newsies. “Now. I’m going to go and get blankets that us theater folks have used before for shows. I will make an exception to my prior rules.”
“Manhattan Newsies, the lodge is not far. I am giving you all permission to quickly go to the lodge and get pillows and blankets. You are going to need it. Please be safe, and hurry back. I do have two boys bringing blankets and pillows as well, but none of you boys would like to see them. You are dismissed. I love you.” She spoke finally before going off to find the things she needed in order to help all these boys get situated. Jasper held a confused look as he processed Medda’s words. Two boys the majority of the Newsies didn’t like? He didn’t want to ask her, as he respected the woman, but he was intrigued. It wasn’t Pulitzer, god no, he didn’t count as a boy but a man. Sort of. Wiesel too. Nobody liked him, he was loud. Two boys… It took Jasper when he’d gotten to the lodge to figure it out. “Oh my god-!” He exclaimed softly, as if just to himself. The boys were Oscar and Morris.
That’s why she sent the Manhattan Newsies off, because one single look at the Delanceys, they’d get killed in cold blood straight on sight. He’d push open the doors to the lodge, going up to the rooftop, where his cot was. Usually, his back would hurt if he laid up here, but surely it’d be better in a warm theater. As Manhattan’ Newsies would grab whatever supplies they could, the majority were surprised on who the two boys were. At least when they got back. Race had to be held back from punching the oldest straight in the jaw, held back by Albert and Jojo, who was trying to talk to Morris without hearing the Italian’s violent and harsh words. Which… is difficult when Race is literally shouting profanities at Morris. “Knock it off, Race. He’s bringing us blankets and shit like that.” Albert grumbled out at the blonde, holding an annoyed expression on his face because of this. “No-! He doesn’t have the right to be here!” Of course, Race is just yelling because he’s pissed.
“Take it or leave it, Blondie.” Morris scowled out, rolling his eyes right after. “Got everything, Medda! I’m gettin Osc and headin’ out!” He called out to the older woman, off to search for his brother. Race would only growl out in response, being let go eventually by the others holding him back. So whilst Race death glared at the Delancey, Jasper was helping some of the others get situated and comfortable, just… enjoying the Christmas Spirit that the theater provided. Along with the warth. Maybe this was all worth it. “Hey, kid.” The same voice of the black haired boy spoke up. Jasper lifted his head slightly, looking at the boy with a smile forming on his face. Giving a wave, the ravenette smiled slightly. “See how I was right? Jasper would hum in response, eventually hugging the boy.
“...Thanks, Rex..”
