Build Up, Ep 4 Recap: Donāt Forget v I Donāt Love You
Welcome back to the project everyone deals with waiting two weeks for -- my MNET Build Up Recaps! In the previous one, a bunch of my favorites -- Kim Minseo, Bain, Lee Gwangsuk, and Kim Sungjung -- went head to head. Ah, that was a good one! In this one, weāll see the other member of Just B, Geonu, and Chicagoās pride Soomin take on former BDC member Hong Seong Jun and musical actor Kim Seohyung. Itās also a good one! Letās dive in.Ā
So we start off pretty much as usual, with the guys taking the stage, accompanied by some musical soundtrack. This time the editors have chosen a driving beat with rock and dub step elements so it's really powerful sounding, which makes it a little comical when we see the guys and how they're dressed.Ā
Soomin is wearing a pretty fabulous s w e a t e r but Geonu has decided to raid the wardrobe of an old grampa for some reason. You know I love a good sweater but... this ain't it, fam. It's about three sizes too big and looks like it would smell like cigarettes for some reason. And paired with loose white slacks? Nope, I'm out.Ā
The other team is dressed in button down shirts, which is fine, I guess. Hong Seongjun has one of those thin bow ties that hangs down limply, and Kim Seohyung's shirt is tightly pleated in the front, as if it's made of crepe paper. They look perfectly nice but it seems absurd that they'd be accompanied by dub-rock! It should be more like... James Taylor. Or Sarah McLachlan.Ā
VCG looks at the teams and says, "Ohh, Chicago!" Because, of course, Soomin is from Chicago. (I wonder what his American name is? Because I feel like he probably doesnāt go by Soomin back in the US.) We're reminded of his lovely performance in Ditto in the first round.Ā
Soomin and Geonu have joined their names into "Soo-u" and do a little thing and it's, like, whatever, because they forget to use their mics. They're besties with a personal joke thatās funny to them, even if itās not that funny to us.Ā Ā
Dahee asks the other team to introduce themselves, and Seohyung says hello. His natural speaking voice is very low and pleasant and the judges react like, wow! Then he and Seongjung give a weird intro that also doesn't go so well so let's just move on.Ā
The teams do a bit of smack talk and it actually doesn't really feel that good natured. Eeep.Ā
We flashback back to the rival choosing moment, when Geonu and Soomin were chosen to go the RCPA (Rival Choosing Platform Area). Several teams begin whispering about possibly taking them on, but then Soomin, in his continuing effort to make Americans look bad, addresses the other teams rudely, not using proper honorifics even though they're all older than them. This is extremely insulting to a Korean person in ways that I know I don't fully understand, so if I get it wrong and you are Korean or have specialized knowledge, I welcome your input.
Despite my incomplete knowledge, I do know enough to know that (a) Soomin is probably being playful and doesn't truly mean to offend and also (b) it is likely that many other contestants, and many Korean viewers will be offended anyway. I really do worry about the way Soomin is presenting himself on this show. Korean culture is so specific about what you should and shouldn't do and if you piss off the voting base, it can be really hard to win them back. Itās not impossible, but⦠it can be tough. As an American myself I can sympathize -- we often are perceived of as rude by people from other cultures when we do things that would be acceptable, even celebrated, in our own culture. I really like Soomin's voice and I think he could have a career singing, as long as he doesn't alienate the Korean public!!
So yeah, Soomin tries to provoke one of the younger teams to challenge his team -- he comes across as really disdainful of some of the older contestants, which rubs me the wrong way, to be honest. Team Seohyung x Seongjun (Iāll call them Team S&S) seem to be the ones they're calling to, so the rivalry is formed.Ā
"Since you invited us here, we'll see you off," says Seohyung, in a vague attempt at smack talk. Then Soomin does a dumb thing where he acts like his hand is a phone, with a call from the taxi driver who is here for the other team, and it's super hacky and cringey but Soomin and Geonu are so proud of it. Sigh. But Seohyung takes it all in stride. He seems like a cheerful, lovable dude, doesn't he?Ā Some time later, Team S&S is meeting to choose a song and stuff, and Seohyung is wearing a black mock turtleneck with a gray hoodie over it and black coat over that. What is with Korean heating systems? Seongjun is wearing a fleece sweatshirt, so no proper sweaters here.
Anyway, they're talking strategy. Seongjun was on the same team as Geonu for the first round, singing If You, and he thinks it's obvious that Geonu will want to perform a western R&B pop song. Seohyung points out that since Soomin is from the USA, Soomin also probably will want to sing a Western song.Ā
Mentioning this really sets off Seongjun, who says, "He only speaks in English. I get sick when I'm next to him."Ā
Ok, I know that could be a Korean figure of speech and maybe it's not as harsh as it sounds, but woah, dude. Yes, of course, it would be annoying to be around these ostentatious English speakers. I can only imagine how it might feel as a Korean person who is being bombarded daily with more and more English all the time; it would be irritating to have your own language being supplanted by another language, especially if it feels like maybe your own culture is being displaced as well. Also, it would just be annoying to have someone around refusing to speak the language you both speak, regardless of like, geopolitical issues.
But even so, I'm not sure itās a cute look for Seongjun to say that it makes him feel sick to be around it. When you factor in the obvious animosity that he displayed in earlier episodes on the topic of successful idols like Yeo One or Seokhwa or Woong being on this show, you get a picture of someone who seems bitter and irritable. That's not necessarily who he IS, but it's how he's looking.Ā
The two guys go on to talk about how Geonu also speaks in English a lot and we get a little montage of Geonu and Soomin speaking English together. (And later on we find out that Geonu introduced himself in English on the first day, which is weird. More on that later....)
In any case, since Geonu and Soomin are probably going to sing R&B, Team S&S decide to go for a more sentimental song.Ā
Then Seohyung gives a funny little smile and reveals his musical taste, which is all sappy songs that came out in the 1970s. You can tell that Seongjung isn't quite sure what to make of this weird partner.Ā
We flash back to the duo-formation moment and find out that despite Seongjung assumptions, he is actually two years older than his old fashioned -- and tall -- partner.Ā
Seongjung tells Seohyung, "You look like an upright man," and Seohyung says he gets that a lot. He doesn't mind, either, because people also tell him he's handsome apparently. We flash back to a pre production meeting, and a staff member points out that he's very tall. He says he drank a lot of milk. He also says he enjoys watching "car documentaries." What? Are there enough documentaries about cars for this to constitute a genre? I guess so!
He also doesn't know his MBTI, which for a young Korean person is very unusual. He does seem to be a very specific person, doesn't he? Calm, polite, cheerful, sweet. I like him. I feel like he's someone Lisa Simpson would have a crush on, you know? Like he's quiet and enjoys puzzles?
Anyway, back to song selection. Seohyung suggests "I Don't Love You" by a group called Urban Zakapa. Per Wikipedia:Ā
"Urban Zakapa is a South Korean R&B singer-songwriter group formed in 2009 by Fluxus Music. ....The group's name is an abbreviation for Urban, Zappy, Kaleidoscopic, and Passionate.... Although the group debuted in 2009 as a nine-piece with four vocalists and five instrumentalists, there are currently only three vocalists due to artistic differences."Ā Ā
Ooh, sounds like some hot gossip there!Ā
Anyway, the song went to number 1 in 2016, so even though it's not super recent, it would probably be familiar to the judging panel. Like at least 101% of Korean ballads, it's about a breakup. I wonder how Koreans even have time to fall in love in the first place when they're breaking up so often!
Sample lyrics:
What should I say? / Where do I start? / Iām only hanging my head / Youāre looking at meĀ / In this awkward silence
I donāt love you / Iām sure you already know / Even when I see you shedding tears / My heart doesnāt ache anymore
I donāt love you / Thereās no other reason / I donāt even want to say / Iām sorry or forgive me
Thatās all / This is how I really feel / I donāt love you / I donāt love you
The original song featured both male and female voices, which helps break up the repetitive monotony a bit. But it really is just saying over and over āI donāt love youā -- without a hint of irony or sarcasm that maybe the singer really *does* love the listener, that theyāre just saying it because theyāre hurt. You know, like the song Abittipsy by Youhua, where she tries to sound cheery and like sheās fine, but then she admits that she *might* cry later. Nope, this song seems to be straightforward, just āI donāt love you,ā periodt.Ā Ā
Seongjung likes the idea of this song because it would allow them to show off their low pitches, their high pitches, and their "sentiments."
They rehearse in a variety of locations, holding water bottles to be their microphones (cracks me up how they do that).Ā
s w e a t e r s
They're confident; practice never lets you down. Hmm⦠I hear the ghost of my middle school band teacher murmuring, "Practice doesn't make perfect. Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect."Ā
Did they practice perfectly? I guess we'll find out!
Itās performance day! As they prepare to sing, kindly hyung Seongjung reaches out to Seohyung for a fist bump and says, Let's have fun.
"Oh, a fist bump! I read an article about this youthful behavior in the printed newspaper I read in the mornings while I drink healthy tea and eat fiber cereal. I return your fist bump in a friendly manner!" -- Seohyung, probably
The judges are like, this song is hard. Uh oh...

My thoughts:
That was nice. It's not really my jam, but the singing was pretty and their harmonies sounded great.
Seohyung has that musical theater voice, with a lot of emotion in his tone. Toward the beginning and again at the end, he almost verges on sing-talking, which again is very musical theater of him. I don't know if ballad-fans like that kind of thing or not.Ā
Though he has a lovely upper mix, he appears to be a bass, which is kind of cool to find in a field that preferences tenors. A deep voice can add a special color to a group. I mean, what would Stray Kids be without Felix? What would ONF be without Wyatt? Or even Dreamcatcher without Dami, or G-Idle without Yuqi? Those special voices help make their teams a little special.Ā
Overall I actually like Seohyung's voice more than I would have thought. It's hard to deny his range and the variety of vocal tones he can do. I think the biggest problem in his performance is the way he holds his body and his facial expressions.Ā
If you have an hour or two to spare, you should watch Jenny Nicholson's amazing take down of Dear Evan Hanson. One thing she points out is that the way you act on stage is different from the way you act for the camera. On stage, it makes sense to bug out your eyes and jut out your chin, because someone at the back of the theater needs to see you. But for the camera, it's just too much. And thatās kind of what we see with Seohyung here. Heās Acting, rather than just living through the song, and itās a bit too much.Ā
Also, he hunches his shoulders a lot, which might be a habit of his because he's shy and tall, but it doesn't come off well on stage.Ā
Seongjung isn't quite as powerful of a singer, but he's still really good. He appears to be a tenor, so the lowest notes are maybe a little harder for him, but he ends up hitting them ok. He has a slight nasality to his tone, and his upper range is a bit thin sounding sometimes, but I still think he sounds pretty. Also, his full on belts are excellent. He used to be in an idol group (BDC) and he knows how to look into the camera and sell it, but he doesn't vary up his expressions much.
Overall, the whole thing is oddly lacking even though there's nothing at all wrong with it. Doesn't seem fair, but here we are.
I really think the song choice is partly to blame. For one thing, singing about not loving someone is kind of⦠I donāt know. If you were a judge listening to people sing about not loving someone, would you get immersed in the emotions of it the way you would if you were listening to people talking about being in love? But the other problem is Seohyungās over-acting. Heās really throwing himself into it, and contrasting with Seongjungās more natural performance, it feels kind of off. The vocals arenāt the problem at all, though.Ā
My favorite part of the performance was the harmony right after the key change. Good stuff.
āI mean, thereās emotions, and then thereās this!ā -- Jenny Nicholson
The MNET edit is a bit confusing. Right at the beginning, Eunkwang says of Seohyungās singing, āah, he removed a lot of the musical tone.ā I think heās referring to Seohyungās semi-sing-talking.Ā
But VCG likes it.
We get a lot of reactions from other contestants backstage saying that it's really good, and we get the judges smiling and nodding, but we also get the judges making weird faces.Ā
I donāt think theyāre enjoying it, but seriously you never know.Ā
There don't seem to be any instant replays.Ā
Right at the end, Seohyung sings unaccompanied and everyone seems really touched. Then there's a moment of silence, and then soft applause. The singers hug each other, and Seohyung almost rests his head on his older teammate's shoulder. Seongjung has a lot more stage experience and probably helped Seohyung a lot when they were preparing.
The judges applaud kind of quietly. Backstage, the guys say they think it was really good.Ā
I paused it here and asked myself, how do the judges feel? And I had no idea. I'm not sure even they know. They had to watch 20 performances over what had to be at least a five hour period, maybe much longer, so maybe at some point they low-key stopped caring. They are still taking it seriously though and are checking their previous scores to make sure they're giving as fair a grade as possible.
Backstage, Choi Suhwan (who sang Sherlock at the beginning of the round) says āThey didnāt form harmony. They didnāt sound like a team.ā I donāt know if I agree with that -- I thought their voices sounded nice together.Ā
Sunyoul, who is sitting right by Suhwan and probably heard him, wonders out loud if maybe they picked the song because āthey couldnāt form harmony.āĀ I think maybe Sunyoul is referring to the fact that Seohyung is a bass and Seongjung is a tenor. I still think thatās fine for a duet, but what do I know?
The scores are revealed.Ā Their high score is 92, from Solar, and their low score is 80, from, of course, Jaehwan. The scores aren't super low or anything, so they're a bit relieved, but they had probably been hoping for a few 100s. I mean, who doesnāt hope?
Solar says, āYou both have nice voices. You can both sing. It was flawless.ā VCG agrees. āBut⦠I couldnāt stop thinking that it was ordinary.ā
Thereās this amazing split screen of Seohyung singing so hard his face is about to fall off, while Solar is just sort of⦠looking.Ā
She goes on, āI was just thinking to myself, āOh, this is the song theyāre singing.ā You should pick a song that shows your charms more next time. But this was flawless. I liked it.ā So their 92 score came with a mixed review.Ā
Jaehwan says āLet me tell you this first: This is a very high score for me.ā The guys kind of laugh -- a bit of the pressure is relieved. He goes on to talk about how since Seohyung is a musical actor, he sang like he was reading lines. āYou made it sound ordinary,ā Jaehwan says. āThank you for telling me,ā Seohyung says, with a nice smile.Ā
Backstage, Sunyoul is still chatting with Jeup and Suhwan, even though the latter team beat him in the rivalry.Ā
Donghun looks like he might burst into tears any second. Will someone hug that man, stat? Thanks!
Sunyoul theorizes that it must be hard to change from a musical theater style of performance to a pop style. Thatās interesting, because I donāt think any of the musical actors have been particularly successful on the show so far. Iāll have to run the numbers on that later.Ā
Thinking of sad Donghun reminds me to say, please check out A.C.E.ās new song, My Girl. Itās got a smooth, city-pop/retro vibe, kind of like Cupid by Fifty Fifty or Maniac by Viviz. I like it! Though I do think it was weird to show them singing to really young girls at the end when the A.C.E. is increasingly looking like a group of guys in their late 20s/early 30s.Ā
Anyway, back to the judging. VCG tells Seohyung, āYou have a very nice voice. You build that voice to become a musical actor. So what you need to change is the way you sing. You donāt need to change your voice.ā Itās hard to tell from the translation, but I think what VCG means is the way that Seohyung was doing that kind of sing-talk stuff, and the over-emoting that I noticed. āItās very nice to have a bass like him on the team,ā he says, tapping into my brain again, and all the judges agree. āItās reassuring,ā says Baekho. āYes, the bass completes it,ā says VCG. āYou must protect your voice!āĀ
Seohyung seems to appreciate the helpful feedback.Ā Ā
Meanwhile, poor Seongjung doesnāt get a ton of feedback that we see. I bet they did say stuff to him, though -- itās just that the show doesnāt care, I guess.Ā
Anyway, itās time for the other team, Geonu and Soomin, who are committed to being āhappy charmsā on stage. The other guys waiting backstage seem to be looking forward to Soominās performance.Ā
We find out that both of them chose each other as the person they most wanted to work with on the show. That should be really cute to me, and you know I love friendship on these shows, butā¦
Ok, Iām going to be honest with you guys: I find these guys a bit irritating. I know thatās not cool, but I figure itās better to just be honest about my reaction to them. Iām aware that (1) I donāt know them in real life (2) this is all editing (3) theyāre not doing anything really that bad. Despite all that, I find them irritating. So, Iām going to do my best to be honest about what I see, and I apologize in advance if either of these two is your favorite. It's not fair of me to just find them annoying for almost no reason, but it's hard to control an emotional response. Ok! Let's get back to it.
So, we jump back to the duet-choosing moment.Ā
We can see that 20 guys are standing on the top tier, meaning that all ten top tier guys chose a mid or lower tier member to work with. Now itās time for the mid tiers to choose a duet partner.Ā
The other guys sort of shuffle around a little, but Soomin goes right up to Geonu. āWhat kind of music does Hyung like to do?ā he asks, and Geonuās face lights up, first with surprise, then with happiness.Ā
Bain also approaches, and kind of stands there awkwardly, which makes me feel kind of sad. Hereās the thing: Bain probably went over to Geonu at least in part because Bain didnāt want Geonu to not get picked. Geonu was Low Tier, and Bain was Mid tier, so he may have thought āIāll rescue my teammate.ā (Theyāre both on Just B together.) Bain and Geonu are the same age, which often gives people a feeling of connection in Korean culture (from what I can gleen).Ā
Bain says heās looking for someone to do a pop song with, and whatās weird is that not only does Geonu not even seem to want to make eye contact with Bain, or say something like āOh, thanks for the offer, but I think itās better for us to show our individual colors,ā he just ignores poor Bain, who stands there all tall and orange and awkward until he wanders away, and it makes me sad. Maybe this is where my irritation began, with Geonu sort of letting Bain hang in the wind like that. And for all I know Geonu did in fact talk to Bain and it was edited out. IDK.Ā
Meanwhile, Soomin suggests that they sing āCanāt Take My Eyes Off Of You,ā which was the song he did in the Voice Check. Seems odd to suggest it.Ā
We get a flashback to Geonu introducing himself in English:
āWhatās good guys, Iām Geonu, and Iām here to sing my soul out. Vamos!ā He doesnāt mention that heās from Just B in his intro, either, which is also⦠interesting. Per his online info, his mother is an English teacher, which is how he learned to speak English well. Not sure where he got the Spanish, but hey, a lot of Spanish speakers listen to Kpop so itās not crazy.Ā
So I guess the thing is, I can understand how he knows English so well but I do wonder why he would speak it to a group of Korean speakers. Everyone there knows Korean, including Jay, Soomin, and Wumuti, so why not choose Korean as the common language? It just seems like a weird flex, but ok. Imagine if Wumuti had just decided to speak Chineseā¦?Ā
Geonu seems to like everything about Soomin, including his hat and the way he sat on the stool, and Soomin seems to like everything about Geonu, so itās a match made in heaven. Theyāre very like⦠I donāt know, like the way two best friends act in 7th grade. This seems to be objectively cute. I donāt know why it bugs me! Am I on crack?Ā
Some time later, Geonuās hair is longer and less pink, and he and Soomin are meeting in what looks to be the same conference room as the one Bain used in another segment, complete with the map on the wall. So I guess itās safe to assume that theyāre at Bluedot EntertainmentĀ
Geonu lists some of his favorite musical artists, including M*ch**l J*cks*n and Chr*s Br*wn, and, thankfully, at least one unproblematic fave, Taeyang. He likes R&B, and Soomin likes pop, so they decide that Pop-R&B, like a song by Crush, would be ideal. They seem to quickly decide on āDonāt Forgetā by Crush featuring Taeyeon (a tiny bit). (I say āseem toā because I suspect they discussed this first via texting or something and then recreated the song choice for the cameras later.)Ā
The song itself is perfectly pleasant, the kind of song youād put on to listen to in the background while youāre doing something else, but itās hard to imagine someone being like, āoh yeah, this is my favorite song in the whole world.ā The lyrics talk about the singerās hope for his relationship for the future, that even if they break up, that theyād never forget each other.Ā
If you and me become estranged someday / If we could never see each other / Donāt forget, Donāt lose / Even if you are holding someone elseās hand / If you are somewhere I cannot go to /Ā Donāt forget, Donāt loseĀ
The lyrics keep repeating ģģ“ė²ė¦¬ģ§ė§ ģģ“ė²ė¦¬ģ§ė§, ijeobeorijima ilheobeorijima, which means āDonāt forget, donāt loseā. (See, thatās the -jima ending for a negative command again! Weāll all become fluent in Korean eventually!)Ā
Once theyāve chosen the song, they take a break and make up an elaborate handshake. Soomin says he doesnāt have a hyung, and Geonu feels like his real hyung. Thatās sweet! I know intellectually that thatās sweet!Ā
Then Soomin has to leave to go back to Chicago for a bit, and then after he comes back theyāll have ten more days to practice. So this gives us a hint of the timeline. Based on both their hair, Iād say at least two weeks has gone by since the Pre-4 mission taping day when theyāre meeting in the office. Then Soomin is going to go back to Chicago for some period of time and then when he gets back they have another ten days. This suggests that maybe a much as month went by between the Pre-4 Mission and the 2 vs 2 Rival Mission.Ā
They chat via video call, and even do their handshake virtually. Theyāre both excited about the arrangement of the song that was made for them, and practice a little bit. Soomin says he can tell how much Geonu has been practicing. Theyāre speaking Korean together, which is again kind of interesting given that when theyāre around other people, they choose English. Maybe they were just deliberately speaking English to speak more privately around the other peopleā¦?
When Soomin gets back, Geonu says he smells like Chicago, which is not the compliment he may think it is, and they get to do their handshake thing. They seem really happy as they rehearse together and just sort of hang out saying SOOUUUU!Ā
And that brings us the performance!
Full performance without reactions
My thoughts:
I should note, first off, that normally, when I hear a song over and over I start liking it more, almost against my will, but the more I hear this song the more boring it is to me. And maybe if I liked the song more Iād be more forgiving of the performance overall. Again, Iām just being honest.Ā
This was an ok performance, but Iāve heard both of these guys sing better than they sang this time.
Soomin was on his s w e a t e r game, for sure, and he really has a lovely voice. But here he sounds a lot breathier than he had been before, and maybe even a tiny bit hoarse. It didnāt sound bad, donāt get me wrong. I think it sounded lovely. Just maybe he wasnāt in the best condition when they taped? I still am interested in what heās going to perform next.Ā
Geonu really didnāt float my boat with his performance. Iāve heard him sing much better than this, so Iām not sure what happened. His first few notes sounded nice, but as it went on, to me, he sounded nasal, slightly shrill, a bit pitchy, and almost like his throat was clenching down as he was trying to sing. It just didnāt sound right. I think his worst moment vocally is at about 0:47 in to the Youtube version of the performance. Itās almost like he has something caught in his throat.Ā
Also, um, the dancing. Not sure about that.
I remember liking Geonu on I-land, and Iāve heard him sing better than this, so I guess maybe he was nervous about performing well with his new American dongsae/friend, and/or just nervous in general about staying on the show. I think Geonu might benefit from some targeted vocal lessons because he does strange things with his throat and upper palette. His natural vocal color is so nice that if he just had some more training on how note to sabotage himself vocally, heād be wonderful to listen to.Ā
Their harmonies sounded nice -- those were some precise harmonies, and they must have practiced a long time to get them right -- but I also am not sure I loved the contrast between their voices when they took turns singing. Geonuās voice has a sharpness to it and Soominās is so smooth that it makes Geonuās voice sound worse in contrast.
Which of the two duets should win -- this one, or Team S&S from earlier? In the end, I didnāt love either of them, so itās hard to say. Of the four voices, I continue to like Soominās the best, but if I had to listen to one of the two performances over, I think Iād rather listen to the boring ballad performance instead of the boring R&B song performance, and I think the problem is Geonu. Thatās such a bummer because Iāve been converted into a big Bain fan and I want to cheer for Just B. Hopefully, Geonu will win back my good opinion in the future! Iām certainly not committed to hating him or anything like that.Ā
In the MNET edit, everyone seems to really love Soominās voice and no one thinks he sounds hoarse or strange, so maybe itās just me. Soomin gets some instant replays, and they both get happy judge reactions.
Eunkwang may or may not be enjoying the song.
The last line of the song is āDonāt forget this song,ā which is why everyone reacts by saying āI canāt forget it!āĀ
Everyone seems to particularly love Soominās voice, but the overall vibe is positive. Backstage, poor Seongjung mutters, āI donāt want to go home.āĀ
The judges key in their votes, and we find out their highest and lowest votes: 95 (Solar) and 86 (Baekho).Ā
Theyāre so happy and surprised that I want to be happy for them, but itās tough. I canāt help but be a little annoyed at this. I donāt think itās really right that this team should win over the first team. There was nothing at all wrong with the way the first team sang, while Geonuās performance was, in my informed opinion, pretty flawed. I know heās capable of better, but he didnāt sing super well on the day they recorded this performance. I know Soomin sounded nice despite his hoarseness, but it just feels like favoritism.Ā
The guys back stage donāt look thrilled, either. Bain doesnāt seem happy for his teammate particularly. Kim Seongjeong, the leaping lizard, and his teammate Gwangseok, look irritated or at least incredulous. Jeong Inseong from KNK, front row with the maroon hair, has a thousand-yard stare that doesnāt seem happy. Jung Intae, front row right in the white shirt, looks a little disgusted. Maybe you interpret their expressions differently than I do, but they donāt look happy, and the guys generally seem pretty happy to cheer for one another when someone does well. I just get the impression that they think the performance wasnāt really that great.
Solar, who gave the 95, begins by praising Soominās voice and āvibe.ā She tells Geonu that when heās by himself he seems ordinary, but when heās on a team, his presences is special. I donāt know how Iād feel about being given feedback like that.Ā Ā
Seungkwan from Seventeen agrees with pretty much everything Solar says. He says that Soomin is so good, itās a little annoying, and adds, āThis calm and languid charm comes across as sexy when he sings.ā
Hey, child who told me to KMS because I referred to Gunwook from Boys Planet as āsexyā, are you going to write hate letters to Seungkwan? Because Soomin is the same age now as Gunwook was then. Yep, Iām petty. I do not like being told to KMS. I will hold a grudge against anyone who tells me to KMS.Ā
Ok, sorry, deep breath.Ā
Anyway, itās impossible for me to think of Soomin as sexy, because I have met waaaayyyy too many guys like him at youth hostels across the world, but I guess maybe he would be to someone else. I leave it to you, dear reader, to decide for yourself.Ā
Seungkwan tells Geonu that he likes Geonuās dancing-like gestures. But low-scorer Baekho disagrees -- disharmony on Team Pledis! -- saying, āThe reason why I gave the lowest score is that I thought that Geonuās gestures were a bit⦠too much.ā
Eunkwangās feedback is a little confusing, I think mostly due to translation issues.Ā I think what he was saying was basically that Geonu was a bit out control -- not just with the gestures, but the whole vocal performance as well. He didnāt have good breath control, so the pitch suffered. The edit highlights the exact portion that I picked out as Geonuās worst moment as well. Hey Eunkwang, if you noticed that like I did, why did you give a score higher than 86?Ā
Itās time to find out who won the round, and the first team comes back out on stage. Everyone says the scores are close, but theyāre not really that close. It seems obvious that Geonu and Soomin won, and they have, 636, to 601.Ā
If you do the math and remove the highest and lowest scores from each groupās total, and find the average of the remaining five scores, Team Geonu x Soomin had an average score of 91, while Team S&S had an average score of 86. As Wendy says, āAh, my heart hurts.āĀ
Soomin and Geonu do a cool-guy handshake thing to celebrate.Ā Ā
Dahee asks Team S&S to say something about the fact that theyāre up for elimination.Ā
Seungjung says, āIām the one who chose Seohyung, and since weāve lost, I feelā¦.ā
ā... Iām so sorry to Seohyung. Iām a little sad for myself as well.āĀ
The judges reassure him that he did a good job.
Seohyung, ever cheerful, says,Ā
āWhenever I perform on stage, my belief always is, āIt wonāt be perfect, but letās have no regrets.ā Today, the stage was not perfect at all. But I put everything into it, so I have no regrets. Iāll remember all the good things youāve said, and continue.ā Awww! That's great. He's a charming dude, isn't he?
The judges tell him heās well spoken, and then he and Seungjung walk off stage arm in arm, with Seungjung still apologizing.
āIām sorryā¦ā
Backstage, Seongjung starts to beat himself up again -- āI could have done betterā¦ā -- when he interrupts himself and says firmly, āNo, we did a great job!ā Nice! Love that.Ā
And thatās basically the end of the episode! We see a preview of the next round, featuring a distressing lack of sweaters but a lot of other fashion statements, and get the current voting standings. The top five is the same as last week, and the top 9 has been the same 9 people since voting started. The only major changes this week compared to last week is that Yoon Inhwan is up 8 spots and Taewoo is down 7 spots. But nobody has changed to a different zone of the list, if that makes sense. The Unit MBTI - Feeldog MBTI
Feeldog (BIGSTAR) ā ESFJ
Cognitive Functional Stack: Ā Fe Si Ne Ti
Ā Feeldog is such a gem and a pleasure of a person to watch, as well as be with, from what I can gather. Ā All his actions are channelled through his incredibly strong Fe. Ā Heās extremely kind and compassionate to all around him but doesnāt blow his own trumpet about it in any way. Ā He uses his Fe to be in total harmony with whichever group heās working with and heās one of the most valued competitors in the competition, by audience and peers alike. Ā Yet he stays humble.
He wants to resolve any issues as soon as they arise, bringing discussion neatly and carefully into the open so everything can be ironed out (Fe-dom). Ā Heās a total cute father-figure to everyone in the group and can easily switch from cute to badass or anything inbetween depending on whatās needed of him. Ā This is the essence of his performance and how itās determined by Fe ā everything he does, every move he makes, is calculated carefully (SiTi) to create the best possible form of enjoyment from his audience, who he cares about deeply (Fe). Heās family orientated since he thanks his parents (FeSi) and shows that in the way he looks after the younger contestants too.Ā He gets easily choked up talking about his family, as seen in the second results stage, when heās asked to say a message to them.
Feeldogās Fe empathy can be observed in his friendship with Hansol. Ā Hansol was so excited to make friends with him that he talked throughout the night ā Hansol just continuously asking questions ā and the fact that Feeldog didnāt shut him down so they could get some sleep shows that he cared about Hansolās curiosity and wishes (a Fi/Te user would have āknown whatās best for themā and enforced sleep). Ā We also find out that Hansol is so timid in front of the commentary interview cameras that Feeldog goes in with him to talk and loosen him up a bit ā sacrificing his own time so that his friend can have some good screen time. Dom Fe Fe FE!!!!
When Jungha was still injured for the āYouāre Mineā performance, Feeldog wasted no time in rearranging the dance so that he could still be sensitively included. Ā When Rokhyun told him that Jungha could still be in the cast for the performance, Feeldog showed concern and threw no judgement or scorn or exasperation on Jungha. Ā He was perfectly patient. Ā Then when it transpired that Junghaās injury was worse than previously thought, Feeldog showed nothing but concern for Jungha. Ā He even said, āI can feel that he feels sad,ā which is the most direct use of dominant Fe that Iāve seen from anyone in the competition.
However, his Fe also means that he cares deeply what other people think of him (this is one of the reasons why he was so delighted to be picked early for the team grouping exercise for 4th mission). Ā He particularly doesnāt appreciate comments regarding his height!
His Si is apparent in how he mentions his past with BIGSTAR, and it clearly shapes the way he acts. However, he isnāt hugely vocal about it. Nonetheless, he values some of the golden oldies from the group greatly, like Rokhyun, and Lee Geon. Ā Notice how cutely excited he was when Rokhyun picked him for his 4th mission team. Ā He was like a baby!!
He has also used his Si to help him become one of the best dancers ā he has a fantastic memory for moves, and in conjunction with a crowd-orientated Fe, his moves are clearly perfected and completely entrancing.
His Ne mainly appears in the form of him worrying about what other teams are doing and/or wondering about them. Ā He can also use the quick-thinking combination of Ne with his other functions to make witty remarks, such as when Chan is apologising for his short legs, and Feeldog shouts out, āitās ok, itās okā ā a comment that is both witty and amusing, because of who says it, but also kind and comforting, demonstrating his Fe.
His inferior Ti means that he doesnāt question anyoneās decisions, just simply gets on with them and works to make the absolute best out of what heās got. Fe-Ti gived him good leadership qualities when heās the leader or dance instructor, and he responds well to having to take on responsibility.
Overall, Feeldog demonstrates bucketfuls of Fe, and a smattering of enough of the other functions to be sure heās an ESFJ. Ā I would expect a lot of people to misinterpret him as an ESFP because heās such a performer, but as Iāve shown above, the motives behind that performance show more clearly that heās such a great performer because of hard practice (Si) and empathy for his audience (Fe).
Song to listen to: BIGSTAR ā Hot Boy

Build Up, Ep 4 Recap: River vs A Letter
Welcome back to the project everyone loves waiting two weeks for -- my MNET Build Up Recaps! In the previous one, we saw WEiās Seokhwa and AB6IXās Woong take on two trainees. In this one, a bunch of my favorites face off -- Kim Minseo, Bain, Lee Gwangsuk, and Kim Sungjung. Oh no! Who will win? Letās find out!
The guys come out, and as they stand there on stage, everyone notices how nicely dressed most of them are, and how tall.Ā
Bain and Minseo introduce themselves as Blackfire.
The colors in Blackfire refer to their hair colors, they explain. Looks like Minseo has trimmed his hair a bit, and it makes him look a little older. Bainās is also restyled in a way thatās a bit more flattering to his head shape, which is good. This is all good.Ā
Wait, what is Bain wearing?Ā
Ok, I think heās wearing a translucent white turtleneck, a white⦠vest? Cumberbund? ⦠and a white blazer, with white trousers that also appear to be maybe a bit too translucent for me.Ā
Anyway, they explain that Bain even dyed his hair dark red (it had been orange before) as a step in becoming āferociousā to beat the hyungs in the other team.Ā
Gwangseok and Sungjung introduce themselves as Black Haired.
Ok, obviously something is going on here -- a mysterious hair battle. Whatās going on? Baekho reads the file and finds out that Sungjung said something surprising, so much so that VCG is like, āWhat is this, the Joseon Dynasty?ā (Thatās like asking, āWhatās going on, are we in Renaissance times?ā)Ā
We flashback to the rival matching moment, as Bain and Minseo make their way up to the RCPA (Rival Choosing Platform Area).Ā A lot of teams step forward to challenge them, including Geonuās team, which is extra painful because Geonu and Bain are both on Just B together! Hey man, thatās gotta be a Survival-Show No-Go. An SSNG.Ā
Left to right: Team Geonu x Soomin; Team Lim Junhyeok x Yeo One; TeamĀ Lee Gwangsuk, and Kim Sungjung; Team Yoon Inhwan x Ma Jaekyung.Ā
I guess later on Iāll try to reconstruct the order that the matching took place, because obviously this was pretty early on.Ā
Bain takes it in stride. Heās like -- āfour teams thought they could beat us. It was fun!ā And he gins. I really like Bain, guys. I wish he had a better stylist because heās really charming in a Joohoney from Monsta X kind of way.Ā
So, Bain and Minseo start to think theyāll probably try to tackle one of the two teams on the left, and Sungjung notices the direction their eyes keeps going. He interviews, āJust by looking at them, I thought theyāre someone we could beat with just emotion.āĀ He decides to make a strong provocation to get them to pick his team and he says, āI donāt like men dying their hair red.ā
Bain, being iconic, is like, āwell, first of all, itās ORANGE, you dumb dumb!āĀ
At first, everyone is laughing, but then Bain is like, oh no you better donāt, and he picks Sungjungās team. āThey fell for our provocation. Iāve already made a plan. Thereās no way we can lose -- Iām riding a wild horse. I have the fastest strongest horse. Iāve brought The Red Hare. I have⦠Lee Gwangseok.āĀ
Sungjung and Gwangseok meet up some time later to prepare for the challenge. MNET blurs out the brand name on their keyboard, which is important. Also, Gwangseok looks to be wearing a big, thick turtleneck s w e a t e r. Keep that throat warm, Gwangseok-ah!
Sungjung explains that his plan was to pick a really great partner and ride on his coattails, which seems weird given that Sungjung is also pretty highly regarded on this show.Ā
Sungjung explains that he really loved Gwangseokās voice in both performances, even in Tomboy when Gwangseok was chosen as Low Tier. Sungjung says that he thinks they should do an emotional song, and again says that Gwangseok has a āwild horseā feeling, and every time he says that, the show plays a horse sound effect and itās just likeā¦Ā

FYI, please donāt be too concerned. This isnāt a real photo, as realistic as it looks. I did this in Microsoft Paint! I know, I know. You didnāt know your BPR-unnie could work magic like this.Ā
I think Gwangseok starts to get a bit uncomfortable with Sungjung constantly saying heās like a wild horse, but thatās just my feeling.Ā
Sungjung says he wants to do a song with so much emotion that it smells. āIād say a song that almost stinks!ā Sungjung, are you ok? (This is probably a Korean figure of speech.)Ā
They decide on A Letter by Bumjin. This is the gist of the lyrics:Ā
āAs I saw you turning around, I couldnāt say anything, and my short-lived year of being sad came to an end. When the harsh memories that pass by are scattered by the wind, I try to let them go as if nothing happened so that no painful feelings remain. Goodbye, my day is fading away, my stars that failed to shine, the words I have been saving, finally, I will send you my goodbyes.āĀ
At Gwangseokās suggestion, they decide to just let their rugged vocals and the emotions of the song carry the piece.Ā Sungjung literally says heāll do whatever Gwangseok wants to do, and Gwangseok again is made a bit uncomfortable, like, āthis is too much pressure!āĀ Still, he really loves the song and thinks the performance could be really great.Ā
They gather to rehearse by singing into iced tea bottles in a⦠department store changing room? IDK, fam. Gwangseok says that neither of them majored in music, so heās worried. It surprises me to hear that Sungjung didnāt major in music, since he seems to have some training under his belt, but I guess you never know. They practice a lot to make sure they have a good stage with their āunpolishedā voices.Ā
And the performance begins!
Full version without reactionsĀ
Overall, very nice, if a bit⦠boring? I think thatās because of the song as much as anything. Itās just so slow and plodding, with a beat that you simply cannot tap your feet to no matter how hard you try.Ā
Both guys have lovely vocal tones, and I really didnāt hear anything āoffā or āwrongā about the performance when I just listened to it without watching.Ā
Gwangseok sounds husky, on the verge of him losing his voice, but thatās kind of his thing, isnāt it?Ā
Sungjungās voice is so clean, almost featureless that it could blend with almost anyoneās, from Jay to Hayoon. I feel like I couldnāt really hear him in this performance, partly because he sang a bit too softly,Ā and partly because Gwangseok sang a bit too loudly.
Something obviously went wrong part way, as Gwangseok seemed to have some sort of problem with his in-ear piece, and I think his inexperience on stage hurt the team a lot. In-ear piece giving you trouble? Subtly take it out and just move on. But he did the opposite -- he made a big deal out of his ear piece not working, shaking his head, getting his partnerās attention to point it out, just basically having no chill.Ā
And then, without the in-ear piece to help him judge volume levels, Gwangseok seems to lose control of his dynamics, and he suddenly and randomly gets really loud and even a bit shouty. It hurts the blend of the harmonies. Itās a shame, because I think that Sungjungās voice is really interesting and wanted to get to hear him more. I feel like Gwangseok kind of dominated the show. It never sounds bad, but both of them look kind of miserable on stage and the vibe is off.Ā
And thatās the worst thing about it, since the whole point was supposed to be to portray this sad break up song in a way that makes the listener cry. The listener is too busy wondering āwhatās wrong with Gwangseokās earpiece?ā to connect emotionally with the song.Ā
Iām not sure what happened here. Maybe they practiced too much and Gwangseok wore his throat a little raw and he just sort of lost confidence. Maybe it was just singing with the in-ear piece. I donāt know. But I think that Sunjung maybe shouldnāt have been so weird about the whole thing, because it put a lot of pressure on Gwangseok.Ā
Also, I think they should have planned what they would do between verses besides stand there and bop. Maybe they could have had the lights dim on them a little, or have something projected on the back screen, something to take the focus off of them while they werenāt actively singing.Ā
In the MNET edit, everything seems to start right. Right when Gwangseok starts singing, everyone seems to love his singing. Sungjung gets a lot of happy nods, too.Ā Ā
Eunkwang is enjoying it. I think. I guess?
But then it starts to go wrong. Gwangseok lets everything show on his face and totally forgets about portraying the emotions of the song, which was supposed to be the whole point. The judges start to look kind of bored, kind of concerned.Ā

(next to Baekhoās face, it says ācomplicatedā)Ā
It's a bummer, because they sound ok, despite the lack of blend in their voices and the problems with Gwangseokās dynamics.
When the guys are done singing, the judges applaud a little, and VCG is smiling, but itās a bit muted. Sungjung asks Gwankseok about his in ear monitors, and Gwangseok says they were āunstable.āĀ
Backstage, the guys say theyāre not sure what the judges will say. They think it started off well, but was disappointing toward the end. They also arenāt sure the two singers' voices blended well, which I actually think I disagree with. I think they didnāt practice matching their dynamics properly, and if they had, their voices might have sounded really nice together. I think their lack of training ended up biting them in the hinder.
The judges seem to take a long time voting. Finally, we learn that their high is 90 and their low is 75, from -- who else -- Jaehwan.Ā
Jaehwan says that the song suited Gwangseokās voice well, but it became too strong. Solar chimes in to say that Gwangseok sang a bit too loudly at points and it wasnāt balanced enough. Eunkwang scolds Gwangseok a little, saying that he really has to watch his dynamics because otherwise he wonāt be a good member of a team. āYou guys are really good,ā Eunkwang says, even if they havenāt had training, ābut there are parts that are disappointing.ā Sungjung lacks energy, Eunkwang says -- and Baekho agrees. I think theyāre all pretty correct.Ā
As the guys walk off stage, Baekho and Seungkwan compare Gwangseokās voice to a gemstone that just needs some polishing.Ā
Next itās Bain and Minseoās turn. Backstage, theyāre nervous -- scared, even.Ā
We flashback to the rival choosing day. Bain feels bad, partly because so many guys thought they could challenge his team, and partly because he was baited into choosing Sungjungās team. But no more regrets! He is determined to find a song that fits his voice well.Ā
Minseo is frustrated, because he was low tier. āI expected no one to come my way and no one did,ā he says. They were basically the team of leftovers, we see. Minseo says that he feels grateful to Bain and determined to do better.Ā
Some time later, Bainās hair is now pale orange, and theyāre meeting in an office space of some kind. Neither is wearing a sweater! What kind of bullshit is this?Ā
But at least Minseo has a nice coffee. Good, keep that up.Ā
Theyāve already decided to sing a pop song. But which one?Ā
We see a pre-production meeting with Different-Hair Bain. I like this look better than the weird helmet cut he has going in episodes 1-2. He says that he thinks he must have been a foreigner in his previous life, because he feels so at home in the United States. Oh, come to visit, Bain! I have a spare bedroom. My fella and I will show you around. We can go do karaoke!
He just really likes pop music, by which I think they mean specifically Western pop music. They decide to do River by Bishop Briggs.Ā I mean, yeah. Thatās a great song to sing. Powerful, driving, oddly emotional despite the fact that the lyrics donāt really make sense no matter what language(s) you speak. Yep.Ā
People thought these two would be pushovers, easy to beat. Itās just made them want to try harder.
And then itās time for their performance. Solar is worried that the song would be too powerful for them, but I know my Bain and I think this will be good.
Full version without reactionsĀ
My thoughts:
FUCK YEAH.Ā
THATāS THE STUFF.
Ok, guys, I would like to point out that I TOLD YOU ABOUT BAIN. I told you! I told you that heās fucking great and I know that the show has up until now edited him to look like a schmuck but YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT YOUR BPR UNNIE TOLD YOU ABOUT BAIN. I also called Minseo āone to watch.ā Listen to your unnie!Ā
One of my favorite parts is when, even in the Youtube version with no reactions, you can actually hear the judges screaming right toward the end. Amazing. Love it.Ā
Their voices are actually really similar, so I can mostly describe them together. Both of them have a fantastically well developed upper mix, meaning they can hit higher notes with a full voice rather than a falsetto. They both have a perfect vibrato that provides texture and interest without making it sound wobbly or fussy.
In terms of performance in general, they seemed confident, striding around the stage like they knew they were hot fucking shit, which they are. Bainās little grin as he whispers ālike a riverāĀ toward the end is so good.Ā
Nitpicks? Just three. (1) At once point, Minseo got a tiny tiny bit shrieky as the note got away from him, right toward the end. (2) Bainās falsetto was a little thin and underdeveloped. (3) Minseo in particular could improve his English pronunciation. But who cares, this rocked. I forgive it all. At this point, I prefer this to the original version by a decent amount. If only theyād worn sweaters it would have been completely perfect.
Ok, for once Iām excited to see the MNET version.Ā
Itās so fun to watch the judging panel go apeshit, even if it was filmed on a potato.
VCG likes it so much he gives his Super Dorky Smile of approval.
There are so many instant replays but I donāt even mind. I suspected Bainās whispered ālike a riverā would get replayed and it did, but a bunch of other things too.
The judges are just open mouthed while the guys backstage are like, āthis is so dark and sexy! Theyāre like different people.ā Even Minseoās slightly shrieky high note toward the end gets love.
When theyāre almost done the judges are already on their feet screaming, but then the singers have two more notes to sing and the judges hush their mouths to listen.Ā
So. Satisfying.Ā
Backstage, the guys are mostly gobsmacked. Most of them didnāt know that Bain was that good. On stage, VCG is wiping away tears and Jaehwan is comparing Bain to Rihanna.Ā
Bain and Minseo are being so polite and reserved that VCG teases them that they should be more cocky about it after a performance that good.
Solar calls them āperverts,ā which again refers to that thing Seunghwan said in the first episode, which is just a little bit beyond my ability to research. I assume itās Korean slang. āYou seemed to know what it means to put on a performance,ā she adds, which, yeah.Ā
Seungkwan asks if theyāre both actually Korean, which is pretty funny.Ā
āWhat? Hyung, what? Why are you laughing at me, hyung? Iām going to tell S. Coups on you." - Seungkwan, probably
Seungkwan says that the song River could come off as cheesy if youāre not careful, but Bain was so sexy and Minseo went nuts!Ā
VCG says āBain, thatās how one should sing -- with all the different tones. Thatās the taste Iāve been wanting. Thatās how you get the listeners to focus. And Minseo? Youāre a trainee but you gave more taste than the pros.āĀ
Eunwkwang says that even though they were powerful, their singing was clean and they never lost control.Ā
Jaehwan says theyāre in trouble⦠because now they have to do even better in the next round. Baekho is like, come on!Ā
Time for the judges to vote! Backstage, poor Gwangseok and Sungjung -- remember them? -- know whatās up. Reveal the votes, but not really! Commercial break! Reveal the votes again! But not really! Ok, finally reveal them this time!
Seungkwan, VCG, and Wendy all give 100s. Baekho and Wendy give 97s, and Solar and Jaehwan must have given 98 or 99.
The continued look of astonishment on Minseoās face is just about the cutest/dorkiest thing on earth. I love it.Ā

And Bain low-key looks like he might cry:
Dahee calls out the first team, who walk up on stage kind of sadly. Since their high score was 90 and low score was 75, thereās just no way that they could have won, but we get the scores anyway: 690 to 587.Ā
Doing the math, Solar and Jaehwan must both have given Bain and Minseo a 98. As for the Gwangseok and Sungjung, if you subtract out the high and low scores, it turns out the average of the other judges scores was 84.Ā
Backstage, Inhwan and Jaekyung note that Bain and Minseoās team would have beaten any of the teams who challenged them. As a reminder, they were challenged by: Geonu x Soomin and Junhyeok x Yeo One as well as Gwangsuk x Sungjungand Inhwan xĀ Jaekyung. You might notice that two of those teams havenāt performed yetā¦. Hmmmm. I wonder if maybe these performances were shown a bit out of order? So now weāre spoilered that Team Geonu x Soomin and Team Junhyeok x Yeo One will both score below 690.Ā
Dahee asks the losing team if they have any remarks, and our leaping lizard Sungjung says, āI just want to say one thing. Red hair suits you well.ā Everyone laughs and the good feeling is restored.
Gwangseok says, āBut seriously, we just wanted to be cool. We thought a loss would be acceptable if we did well, but the opponents did better.ā The implication is that maybe he thinks they *didnāt* do well. The judges reassure him that he did, and Dahee adds her piece: āI donāt know if itāll comfort you, but from where I stand, you guys still seem cool to me, even though you lost.ā Aww, Dahee is pretty great, isnāt she? I was unsure about her in the beginning but sheās just the cutest.Ā
Backstage, Gwangseok and Sungjung say they should just go get some soju. And Bain and Minseo are in a state of delighted disbelief.Ā
Anyway, that was fun! I feel a bit sad for Sungjung and Gwangseok, but it also feels fair. I think Sungjung put all his hopes on Gwangseok instead of just sort of running his own (horse) race, and I think Gwangseokās inexperience showed. I still think both of them are great singers and I hope they can continue to learn and grow from all this.Ā
Thanks as always for reading! And if youāre enjoying my recaps, feel free to talk about them whenever/wherever/however! See you as always in the next one.
