Gumyoji Temple: From 1044 to Today
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:32・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 4.0 sec. at ƒ/6.4 Classic Negative film simulation
This photo depicts the main hall of Gumyoji Temple, located in Yokohama, Japan. The temple was originally established in 1044 and has been a significant cultural and spiritual site for the local community. The main hall, rebuilt in 1766, features traditional Japanese architecture with a distinctly curved roof now covered in copper sheeting, a transition made in 1976 from its original thatched covering.
In front of the main hall, a vibrant banner hangs from the eaves, displaying the Buddhist flag's broad vertical stripes in blue, white, red, yellow, and green. This reflects the temple's enduring connection to Buddhist traditions. The foreground includes a set of steps leading to the hall, flanked by various potted plants and a stone water basin, adding to the temple's tranquil ambiance.

Blossoms and Blurs: Evening at Gumyoji Temple's Gate・仁王門から弘明寺の本堂へ続く石段には上りと桜が
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:19・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 10 sec. at ƒ/11 Classic Negative film simulation
This photograph captures the Niōmon Gate of Gumyoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Yokohama, during a tranquil evening.
Taken from the top of the stone staircase, the shot showcases the historic gate illuminated softly in the background, while cherry blossoms frame the scene with their delicate petals. The image employs a long exposure technique, resulting in the ethereal blur of the nobori flags along the stairs, which add a dynamic element to the otherwise calm and serene composition.
The subtle play of light and shadow highlights the intricate details of the temple architecture and the surrounding foliage, creating a compelling contrast between the past and present.
Shot with a Fujifilm X100V camera and a standard wide-angle lens (equivalent to 35mm on a full-frame sensor), this photo encapsulates the beauty and peaceful ambiance of Gumyoji Temple at dusk.

Resonance of History: Gumyoji Temple's Belfry・桜と弘明寺の鐘楼堂
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:47・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 20 sec. at ƒ/11 Classic Negative film simulation
In this long-exposure photo of the bell and belfry at Gumyoji Temple in Yokohama, Japan, I tried to capture the serene atmosphere of the temple grounds. This nighttime scene showcases the traditional Japanese architectural style of the belfry, with its large, curved roof and wooden beams. I especially like the cherry blossoms that are in full bloom in contrast with the bare branches of other trees, all subtly illuminated by ambient lighting.
The bronze bell hanging in the belfry, which was cast in 1798, is central to the Japanese Buddhist ceremony Joya-no-Kane held on New Year’s Even, where it is rung 108 times to symbolize the cleansing of 108 earthly desires accumulated over the past year.

Jokoro Incense Burner at Gumyoji Temple・弘明寺の外置屋根付大香炉
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:35・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 10 sec. at ƒ/6.4 Classic Negative film simulation
The large, dark green, cauldron-shaped incense burner situated at the top of the stairs in front of Gumyoji Temple is adorned with two distinct crests: the gosan-no-kiri, featuring the paulownia plant, and the hidari-mitsudomoe, a triple swirl motif.
The gosan-no-kiri crest is a traditional Japanese emblem featuring the paulownia plant.
The hidari-mitsudomoe, a triple-tomoe motif, flows to the left. This emblem has been part of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples since the Heian period (794-1185).

Gumyoji Kannon Street Shopping Arcade East Gate
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 17:09・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 3200 for 1/60 sec. at ƒ/13 Classic Negative film simulation
Gumyoji Kannon Street Shopping Arcade, known locally as Gumyoji Shotengai, lies nestled between Gumyoji Station on the Keihin-Kyuko Line to the east and Gumyoji Station on the Yokohama municipal subway Blue Line to the west.
This covered shopping arcade (typically called a shotengai in Japanese), sits along the path leading to Yokohama's oldest Buddhist temple, established roughly 1,300 years ago during the Nara Period.
The roofing that blankets the shopping street provides protection to visitors, particularly those en route to the temple.
Whether one seeks everyday essentials or indulges in gourmet delights, taking a leisurely stroll down this extensive shotengai is a regularly occuring pastime, especially following a visit to the temple located at the street's far western end.

Jizo Bodhisattva: A Beacon of Mercy in Ancient and Modern Japan
Location: Gumyoji, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:24・2024/04/09
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 4.0 sec. at ƒ/8 Classic Negative film simulation
Just beyond the Niōmon Gate at Gumyoji Temple, I encountered a serene courtyard adorned with small stone statues of the Jizo Bodhisattva. Revered in Buddhism, Jizo is a beloved figure, often depicted as a gentle monk with a staff and a wish-fulfilling jewel.
These small stone statues, affectionately known as O-Jizō-Sama or Jizō-san, represent the Buddhist Bodhisattva who has vowed to delay his own Buddhahood until all suffering souls are freed from the underworld. Jizo, often depicted as a humble monk, is revered as a deity of mercy, offering protection to travelers and children.
Throughout Japan, I have seen these statues near cemeteries and roadsides, frequently adorned with red caps and bibs, which symbolize prayers for the safety and well-being of children. Their presence in the Gumyoji Temple courtyard adds to the tranquil and compassionate atmosphere of the temple.
