The most critically endangered of the great whales is the North Atlantic Right Whale.

At the surface, this whale is identified by its V-shaped blow. They spend time in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary but laws prohibit close approaches so whale watch vessels avoid them; if boating, please stay at least 500 yards away from the animal. Daily Waypoint | N 43° 37' 22.7" W 70° 12' 29.7" Portland Head Light At Dawn—Portland Head Light, is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. Completed in 1791, it is the oldest lighthouse in the state of Maine. This is my cornerstone photo that set the seed for following my dream of becoming a travel photographer. >>>FMG>>>> Like. An unfortunate sight, but with a happy ending! This entangled Minke whale was found Thursday right outside Frenchman Bay. The whale was discovered by @barharborwhales Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company, who spotted fishing line in its mouth and probably wrapped around its tail fluke. In the second photo, the line is just visible underwater. The whale watch crew quickly responded by contacting our local distentanglement team from the Marine Department of Marine Resources. BHWW captains were able to stay with the whale until the team arrived. We have been notified that the team was able to successfully free the whale from the lines, and it was able to swim safely away! Entanglement is an all too frequent occurrence in the #gulfofmaine for marine mammals, and research and distentanglement efforts are needed to save these whales. Unfortunately, entanglement is one of the leading causes of human-related mortality for large whales. Thanks to everyone involved in saving this Minke whale!
