Vōka
I once knew a man named Vōka, everyone called him Vok. It was strong and cheeky and suited him perfectly. The only reference I could find to this name is it being a Gujarati (Northern Indian dialect) word for walk.
The other inspiration for this name is Star Trek Discovery, where the main protagonist is a Klingon named Voq. I actually quite like this short and alternate spelling. On this note Voq could also be short for ancient Greek words uuvoq or ivoq meaning 'hymns', or Uzbeki ovoq meaning 'flour'.

『 avan jogia. thirty. cis man. he/him. 』 oh heavens, is that JASPER BOWENS from MAIN STREET i see roaming around mapleview? minnie may’s always calling them -SELF-DESTRUCTIVE & -IRRESPONSIBLE. i happen to think they’re not that bad! they’re a pretty cool OWNER of STRINGS & THINGS MUSIC SHOP and every time i’ve seen them, they’ve always been +SPONTANEOUS & +CARING. i hope i see them around again!
Tumblr media
drugs tw, addiction tw, miscarriage tw, death tw ! @mapleviewstarters
NAME : vincent jasper desai-bowens NICKNAME : jasp, vinnie (family and older mapleview residents only) SEXUALITY : pansexual RELATIONSHIP STATUS : in a relationship with paxton ZODIAC SIGN : aquarius PARENTS : james bowens and priya desai-bowens SIBLINGS : amir bowens (40), eva bowens-walker (40) RESIDENCY : a quaint and comfortable apartment near the music shop OCCUPATION : owner and manager of strings & things CHARACTER INSPO : ulysses zane (apocalypse now), klaus hargreeves (the umbrella academy), lito rodriguez (sense8), liam (high fidelity), frank n’ furter (the rocky horror picture show), laird mayhew (why him?).
CHILDHOOD
vincent jasper desai-bowens was born and raised in mapleview to an irish dad and an indian mother. james and priya bowens moved to mapleview in 1979, not long after they got married. james soon found himself a job at the factory and they decided to build their family in the small town.
the couple welcomed their twins not too long after, the golden boy and the wonderful girl were both named after priya’s late parents -- amir and eva. that’s when the bowens’ started to settle down and james made the bold decision to make money from his passion for music, quitting his job at the factory and buying the music store in town.
but then nearly ten years later, priya got pregnant with their third child. it was a risky pregnancy, since she was almost in her forties. they welcomed a strong and healthy baby -- who was named after james’ father and personal hero, a brave man that fought in the war. they were living the dream. that was, until vincent grew up.
being the youngest of three was hard. especially when your parents' had great expectations for you and your siblings’ were fucking geniuses and you were just, well, you. vincent was never the brightest kid or even interested in anything. he was the kid who’d bite others for no reason, yell at the teachers and break toys. he was the worst possible kid a parent could want but once his teenage years rolled in, the bowens’ knew he was never going to change.
TEENAGEHOOD
by the time vincent got to high school, he started to finally make friends for the first time. that’s when he met adrien and tba, who later on became his best and only friends. the teenage version of vincent wasn’t much different from the kid version, only this time the rebellious acts were in different ways -- vincent stopped attending church, would spend more time in detention than in class and would even pick fights for the hell of it. but what was the last straw for his father was when the rumors of vincent using drugs started to run around town. of course, it wasn’t like he was doing hard drugs or anything, but the bowens were a respectable family in mapleview.
to say james was furious was an understatement. and during their last fight, he told vincent he didn’t deserve the name he got and he was a lost cause. that’s when he dropped the name and started going by jasper. that was also the night he ran from home. only sixteen, with nowhere to go and no money to his name. he never talked to his dad again after that.
his sister eva, not wanting him to turn into a homeless person, took him in. but it still hasn’t enough. jasper started getting into a darker path and eventually into heavy drugs. around that time, jasper and his friends found a man that was almost dead. they saved his life but it always stuck with him. he watched as his friends were moved by the act, but he felt nothing. the only desire he had was to deepen himself in drugs. it didn’t take long for jasper to drop out of school and get kicked out of his sister’s house. he then became known as mapleview’s junkie and the bowens’ black sheep -- if he wasn’t already.
ADULTHOOD & NOW
because of his addiction, jasper pretty much pushed out every single friend he ever had from his life, refusing to drag them into his mess. when he turned twenty-one, he was in and out of rehab like it was a hobby. but during one stay, he met someone. and that someone gave him hope.
jasper was in love with her and he actually saw himself having a future for the first time. the boy even got a job so they could shack up together. after a year of being together, they found out she was pregnant. but the dream didn’t last long, she had a spontaneous miscarriage and that’s when things went downhill again.
feeling guilty about what happened to her and thinking that somehow it was his fault, jasper left her and fled to los angeles. he doesn’t talk much about what his life was like there.
about two years ago, jasper’s mom reached out to him with news that his father had passed. she told him about the plan his older siblings had of selling the music store since they had no interest in it, obviously too busy with their own lives to care, and asked that he’d come home to take over the business. he’s been the owner since.
his return to mapleview was a shock to everyone who hadn’t seen or heard from him in years, most of which just assumed he had died or something. and to be honest, if it wasn’t for his mom, he’d never step foot in town again. the amount of trauma that jasper went through would be enough to break anyone, but he’s managing. well, not really. but he’s trying.
RANDOM FACTS
only is ok with getting called “vincent” by his family and older mapleview residents. he will hit a bitch if he gets called that.
since he’s living near his mama, he’s trying to get on his best behavior. he’s just happy to be with her and be able to take care of her.
always shaking like a fucking chihuahua because of his addiction.
he hates his siblings. if he had the strength, he’d roundhouse kick the shit out of his brother
luckily for him, he doesn’t have to deal with them since they moved away from mapleview a while ago. they also barely talk and he doesn’t even know if he has nephews or not. Sad
sometimes he forgets he’s the boss ( oi leo from that 70s show! ) and forgets to pay his employees
if he says he’ll be “taking care of stuff” in his office, you bet he’ll be napping there pls come back from 2 to 4 hours thanks
he can speak three languages: english, hindi and gujarati

Left with the baby (Jankie) - Juno
English -> Basque -> Czech -> Dutch -> Gujarati -> Irish -> Russian -> Turkish -> English
A/N: Initially this was a drabble based off a prompt, original is here, but even the prompt has been lost in translation! And I forgot to translate the title so at least that’s normal. I hope you enjoy this one-shot. It made me laugh anyway.
Also, the only people featured are Jan, Jackie and a baby. However many names are floating around.
When Jane opened the door, her heart was pounding faster than ever. As if it needed a warning. A friend’s smile lit the door, and his brown eyes glowed with joy from Jaan’s condition.
“When you told Netflix tonight,” Jackie said, “I wasn’t even expecting kindergarten!”
Jane laughed. … Do children like it too? “
In fact, Jane didn’t cancel that night for any particular reason - Jackie always said she loved kids. Jane can make her famous parmesan eggplant out of cake, right? He turned his attention to the oven that was already being prepared. Excellent.
While Jackie was controlling everything in the kitchen by throwing the remote in the air and trying to catch her before joining Jackie, she knew where the living room was and was placed on the better side of the bed. Weapon.
"So where do you start?”
“Flying weddings?”
“I don’t know scary things,” Jackie nodded. “Maybe you can leave me.”
“Customizable!”
Jackie didn’t come to the end of Jaan’s bed before waiting for an invitation, taking Jaan’s hand, tucking it around her shoulder, and crossing her fingers. She leaned against Jane and sighed happily as Jane held her breath. He let his boyfriend sit down and wondered if he was asleep and wanted pressure.
Ian remembered his breath, his heart beating so hard he was afraid that Jackie would not hear him. Did it really happen? This was all he wanted as a friend of two years …
He pulled the covers over his legs and reached Jackie with the remote control.
“Then let’s delay it!”
The longer he sat, the more easily he became aware of the increased sensitivity associated with John Jackie’s small movements. Light movements of her shoulders, Jane’s grip, pressure that slightly lifts her legs. Ian had hardly seen what was happening on TV, the room was full of feelings and was in charge of the shampoo for Jackie’s apple friend.
At the same time … the smell of dizziness burns.
Hashtags.
The kitchen ran away, but …
“Is this a boy?” Searching for him upstairs, Jackie came from the living room.
“Yes…” Jane was standing on the stairs, one foot down in the kitchen, and Katina burst into tears. “Jackie, you …”
“And that’s all!” Jackie climbed the stairs before John could finish it. Jaan smiled. Maybe he was trying to do too many things at the same time. When he put the food on the plate, tears receded, and Jackie was still lovingly downstairs.
“Do you have a quiet cat?” Too fast? “
"You know what the coach said: ‘Get it for the team’!”
Jane laughed. “Little shark?”
“Yes, shark.” Jackie laughed and answered the phone. I hate it! Wonderful! But even my niece won’t be disappointed! “
“I think my lunch is a little bit over,” he said, looking at the burnt edge of the dish and tapping his finger on the plate. "Slightly burned.” I’m sorry Jacques. “
Looking up, Jackie took an inch and smiled shyly.
"I’m sure it will be perfect.”
And Jackie’s lips parted from Jane’s sweetest kiss, as if Jane sighed; Jackie looked closely at her face, wondering what she was doing.
Making her breathing normally, she kissed Jackie and rolled her eyes to answer any questions. Yes, he wanted it too. Their food must be cold but Jane doesn’t care.

BIOGRAPHY
When Nathan Matthews enlisted in the military, they didn’t expect that when he came back from tour he’d be coming back with a wife and a baby, but that’s how it happened. Being stationed in London, Nathan was able to drink in the various music - as music had always been something he enjoyed, but knew he couldn’t pursue as there were expectations placed upon him in his family, even if he wasn’t born into the main branch - and it was at a concert that he met Lydia, a fellow music lover. The two quickly hit it off, sharing each other’s taste in music, and whenever Nathan had time, he would spend it with Lydia.
It wasn’t long before they were welcoming a little baby to the world, and Lydia, having followed the rising fame of one of her favorite bands, named the child after two of the men in the band - Lennon Paul. Raising a child away from his family was hard, given that he knew that he had a support system in place in Crystal Grove, but he never brought up moving. In fact, it was Lydia who suggested moving to Crystal Grove, and at the age of eight, Lennon found himself in this new city in a new country.
It was great, really. His parents were able to share their love of music with him, enrolling him in various lessons for various instruments - he excelled in guitar, most notably, though he is skilled in piano and drums as well - and when he began to make up tunes and melodies on his acoustic guitar, they were more than thrilled. All they wanted from him was to be someone that could appreciate the art of music, because it was a language that everyone could understand, and seeing their child flourish in it made them incredibly happy.
What they didn’t expect, however, was for his creativity to shift to other facets - primarily art. Interested in creating things, whether it was songs or sketches, Lennon would always spend time in his room, working hard to create the perfect artistic piece to share with their parents. And while they were thrilled, when he eventually came home with his first tattoo? They weren’t exactly happy to have their child ink his body. But art was how Lennon expressed themselves, and what better canvas was there than the human body?
That’s how he found himself getting into tattooing. It was great, because he could use his skills to create beautiful and unique pieces that would last for years, if not forever, but his ultimate goal is to become a professional musician. While he’s in a band with his best friend, playing guitar and singing back up vocals, he ideally wants to make it big and be his own person - inspired by the likes of Bowie, Elton John and Michael Jackson - but for now? He’s happy to share the spotlight and try to make it big with his friends.

It’s Daniel Vara time!!! Aren’t you excited to read over 1300 words about Chloe’s dad, an NPC with little to no bearing on the plot?
Daniel was the baby of his family. With six older siblings (four sisters and two brothers) and a soft heart, he was the cute one.
Even though he had no aptitude or interest in school, Daniel was his father’s favorite. He got away with everything, much to the chagrin of his older siblings. It wasn’t that he was a badly behaved kid, but tiny Daniel just about always got his way.
His parents were deeply, obnoxiously in love. It would have been stifling if he had not been so used to it.
Daniel’s dad was the weird one in his family. He’s very keen on being a part of the community in England, even if it’s at the expense of his culture and extended family values. He loves his youngest son so, so much, and will willingly bicker with anyone who gives him a hard time, even in his old age.
Daniel got along much better with girls than boys as a child, and was teased by his schoolmates growing up for that.
Daniel’s parents wanted their children to assimilate, so the children did not grow up learning Gujarati language. To the frustration of the kids, the parents used the language as a secret code so they could talk right in front of their children without being understood. Daniel can hold a staggered conversation in the language, but Chloe only learned a few phrases.
Daniel loved cooking with his mother, and soaked up all of the family recipes and seasoning blends. He and his siblings closer to his age would flood the kitchen, and created new family recipes. Food was the only real connection that the family was readily allowed of Indian culture (apparently there was some sort of incident with English hand pies that Daniel’s mother doesn’t like to talk about).
Daniel never settled firmly on a career (and made a muck out of the apprenticeship he did get), but has been working ever since he was thirteen in one way or another. While he’s a bus driver now, he’s done everything from telemarketing, line cooking, and retail. He liked cooking the best, but the jobs he got didn’t pay as well. He tried starting up a business with spice blends from home for a time before Chloe was born, but it failed.
Here is a fun list of all of Daniel’s siblings in birth order: Ajay, Sonia, Erica, Rachel, Ethan, Danielle.
Out of his siblings, Daniel is closest with his sister Danielle. They were born less than eleven months apart, and have a running joke that they were supposed to be twins. Danielle was nicknamed Dani pretty quickly, and Daniel did not like being called “Dan,” so a full first name business stuck.
Apart from Dani, Daniel gets along best with the other siblings closest to his age- Ethan and Rachel. The older three are more distant, and were raised in a stricter environment. Those younger four are particularly food-motivated.
Sonia passed away about seven years ago from cancer.
When he was nineteen, his parents downsized (they were spending more time visiting their older children’s homes anyway), and he decided not to move with them to the smaller place. He, Dani, and their two best female friends moved into a rundown home that was cheap but with a great location.
Calling Daniel’s first house a party house would be a misnomer, but there were always people over. Cousins, siblings, friends, occasionally favorite strangers…
Daniel wasn’t sure where exactly he met Hestia, but she was a fixture at his home starting when he was twenty. They would seize control of the television to watch television drama of varying quality, or create elaborate crafts, or have adventures in baking together. Hestia always seemed to know exactly how long the dough should be proven- even when it did not match a recipe or conventional expectations. But their friendship was great, and apparently Hestia was equally appreciative to have a friend that understood them so well but did not want anything more. He knew she was older, but never asked how much older (his best guess was maybe 8 years older than him? 10 years?)
Daniel was twenty-four years old when he came home one day for his sister to give him the weirdest judgmental look. He didn’t realize why until Hestia was sitting there with a baby. She told him that this was his baby- their baby. Daniel panicked because he had absolutely no idea how this could even be possible. When had they had anything that could possibly result in a baby!? Hestia reassured him and Dani that everything was fine, and proved to them that she was indeed a Greek goddess.
Dani forced him to come up with a name for the baby on a spot. Daniel panicked, but had always sort of liked the name Chloe, so he went with it. No middle name? No middle name! He hadn’t been planning on having to name a baby! He isn’t sure if Hestia was even planning on having a baby! Everyone is too afraid to ask this question (except Danielle, who would if she particularly felt like it).
Hestia hung out for a few days and put Daniel through baby boot camp (Dani and roommate Jessica watched like it was a television programme).before leaving.
Daniel reluctantly brought over his daughter to visit his parents one day, and was pretty sure that his dad was not planning on giving her back. Daniel’s father seemed confused and upset that Daniel had managed to get some Greek lady pregnant, but also excited about having another grandchild. Also he kept threatening to raise the baby himself because how could Daniel’s household manage a child with literally no experience? Were any of those ladies even responsible??
Daniel and Danielle still live with their two best friends, and Chloe calls them Auntie Jessica and Auntie Teja. Jessica moved away for a short time while Chloe was in her early teens, but returned with her partner (Aunt) Abbie after a few years. Teja never moved away, but her husband (Uncle) Seth has been a part of the household since Chloe was eleven. Teja and Seth’s kids, Vikram and Violet, are also part of the family. Daniel wouldn’t dream of calling them anything other than nephew and niece, so they’re Chloe’s cousins. The house family thing is weird, but not that weird. They’re all family.
Daniel’s considered the “Cool Uncle.” His nieces and nephews (as well as great-nieces and and great-nephews) grew up expecting a good time when staying over and more sugar than was encouraged at their own homes. At one point, there was a rumor going around with Rachel and Erica’s kids that ‘gay’ just meant ‘cool.’ It was a whole big thing.
13 year old Vik used to follow around Daniel like a duckling. He thinks it’s cute, and they cook together (Teja and Seth aren’t allowed in the kitchen).
Daniel’s had a very bad string of relationships. Before Chloe moved to Icaria, he’s had guys try to get him to choose between them and Chloe, and that’s grounds for dumping. While it’s certainly not the life he envisioned, Daniel has a family (both by birth and friendship) that he adores. He misses his daughter so much, and tries to talk to her every day.
He’s a really emotional guy- less volatile in his feelings than Chloe, but he’s not good at hiding how he is feeling either. Dani likes to make fun of his exaggerated facial expressions.
Daniel may or may not be seeing someone good for once. While Chloe knows he’s dating, she doesn’t usually want the details unless it’s serious… and this one is starting to get there. It feels right and good.
Daniel will absolutely text Chloe’s friends if they want to. He doesn’t think it’s weird at all to have friends of different ages as long as he’s mindful that they’re Chloe’s friends first and not make things weird/creepy/too personal.

desi tag
no one tagged me to do this but it seemed so fun! and honestly i’ve spent so long unconsciously trying to be Not Desi that i think it would be good for me if i tried openly embracing my culture.
1.What’s your name and what does it mean? im just gonna say my real name means light, it also refers to a traditional candle of sorts in my culture. funny bc my fake name on here is the opposite.
2.Where from the motherland is you/your family from? ahmadabad, india
3.Would you move back to where your family is from, why or why not? no because it’s literally sO hot and although i love my family there, my entire life is here.
4.What language(s) can you speak? english, hindi, gujarati, and about as little french as possible
5.Favorite Bollywood movie? veer zara and if u say it’s not in your top fav movies then you’re lying to yourselves
6. Favorite desi meal? oof that’s tough uhh i love ras madhuri it’s kind of a dessert and also there’s this one shak with potatoes and cabbage and i lob it
7.Where in the motherland do you want to visit? delhi, but like ALL of delhi. i’ve been to agra but i want to see more (although when i went it was like 45 degrees there so i have a bad memory of it klsjdf)
8.Favorite desi singer? for like classics i would say adnan sami and she’s fairly new but shreya goshal. recently arijit singh has been around and he has an absolutely beautiful voice.
9.Describe your favorite desi outfit? i actually don’t really like dressing up but like the anarkali style dresses oof 10/10 would reccomend

13.Favorite desi in the western media? lmao idk? i’ve only seen like 3 people so i cant say
14.Strange superstitions you’ve heard from relatives. to get rid of ghosts you have to fill a plate with food (offerings) and put it in the middle of the street, you cant ask someone where they’re going or something bad will happen to them (so “kya jao chho?” turns into “si jao chho?” im pretty sure si isnt even a word sdkj), drinking water before going into labour is bad, if you have the hiccups it means someone’s remembering you, the amount of white spots you have on your nails are the number of friends you have
15.Describe your spice tolerance. i dont think it’s too high but compared to my white friends. high.
16.Best street food. the pani puri in india is like 90% pani but still good so yeah. oH also there are these really good tiny sandwiches in india!!
17.The weirdest question you got from a non desi person. "is that bits of plastic?” (referring to the chevdo i brought in for snack time). they tried it and for some reason still believed it was plastic.
18.How do you like your chai? i dont lmao i don’t drink cha because idk i just never acquired the taste.
19.When was the last time you have visited the motherland (if you dont live there)? 4-ish year :(
20.Your favorite and least favorite part of your culture?
favorite: desi culture really just takes in the idea of love and makes it their own like friendly love, maternal love, sibling love, romantic love - everything is celebrated in grandiose in it’s own special way and it’s really beautiful. there’s friendship day in india and they make a whole thing about giving each other bracelets, my dad has friends he’s known since kindergarten and they say shit like “we love each other sm you’d think we were all gay”. mothers are worshipped, and indian weddings make you believe in true love even if you never had before. also there’s so much respect given to all living things and there’s just something nice about taking off your shoes in your house or touching the feet of an elder to get their blessings idk it’s a really nice culture to be a part of.
least favorite: women are still treated badly and it’s hard to even think about it. like they’re the ones being blamed when divorce happens (something that is literally forbidden) even if they were in an abusive relationship, they’re the ones being told to stay at home to do the cooking and cleaning, they’re the ones blamed if a baby girl is born instead of a baby boy. it’s difficult to think that such rigid ways of living still exist in some parts of the world but they do. societal progress in general in india is slow and takes a lot of time to shift and change into something more fitting with today’s generation, they’ve come far but it’s still not far enough. also the conservative way of life sucks. there’s a lot more but i don’t want to rain on my own desi loving parade lmao.
