Mikey Way: “I was borderline terrified a lot of the time My Chemical Romance was active. I was learning the bass in front of 20,000 people every night!”
By Gregory Adams ( Bass Player ) published June 9th 2023
The reunited emo kings’ low-end ranger reveals why he swapped out his signature Fender Mustang for a sparkling new signature Jazz Bass, learning bass in arenas, and how he overcame insecurity about his chops
Full interview under cut:
My Chemical Romance’s reunion has seen bassist Mikey Way thrumming through the high pomp punk of The Black Parade and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge favorites with a familiar rhythmic fortitude, but keen-eyed band obsessives have probably noticed the musician is no longer sporting the snazzy, silver-flake Squier Mustang signature model Fender built for him back in 2012.
The good news is that’s because, as Fender have just formally announced, Way has a brand-new – but just as glammy – Jazz Bass out now. There’s a good reason why Way’s made the switch: the Jazz Bass is his first love.
Though he started out on guitar, Way got the hang of a four-string in the mid ‘90s while playing a loaned-out Jazz Bass in his pre-My Chemical Romance project, Ray Gun Jones. He upgraded to a silver-finish Jazz of his own by the time MCR started touring in the early ‘00s, but a trailer mishap led to that instrument getting smashed to pieces on a highway.
Way tells Guitar World that he eventually became obsessed with the short-scale sturdiness of a Mustang bass guitar as My Chemical Romance were writing their 2010 full-length, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, after fooling around with a model Duff McKagan had left at North Hollywood’s Mates Rehearsal Studio. By 2012, Way had his Squier model in stores.
It was during the downtime after My Chemical Romance went on hiatus in 2013, though, that the stubbiness of his Mustang became a little hard to handle.
“I stayed away from playing bass for a little while, which is natural – I was just decompressing,” Way explains. “Then, sometime in 2014, I picked up the bass again, to get my chops back, [but] I noticed that the Mustang felt strange to me.”
After reaching out to the folks at Fender, Way got a grip on his playing by stretching out on the longer-necked Jazzes they sent him. Way’s take on the Jazz Bass is outfitted with ’70s-style single-coil pickups, and a thinline “C”-shaped maple neck the bassist says is super-speedy.
The finish is silver, of course, but Way also wanted an aesthetically inkier black pickguard. The headstock, likewise, pops with its matching gloss-black finish.
Speaking with Guitar World, Way gets into the glam and grunge gods who inspired his love of a good sparkle coat, overcoming performance anxiety, and why a steady attack wins the bass race every time.
What were some of the musts when it came to designing this latest signature?
“I’ve been obsessed with the sparkle finish as far back as I can remember. Growing up in the ‘90s, the silver-flake [finish] was big in alternative music. Chris Cornell had the Gretsch Silver Jet, [Daniel Johns] from Silverchair had one – [with] the imagery the Smashing Pumpkins used, they liked sparkles.
“Ace Frehley, of course, was big into flake finishes, and as a kid, you love the larger-than-life, comic book world of Kiss. [And there’s] David Bowie – the glam rock stuff. That flake finish makes me think of so many different things, but that’s why I love it so much.
“I remember being younger and going into stores and seeing a flake finish and being like, 'Oh my god, that’s an expensive [looking guitar] – I can’t afford that, let alone play it.' It was almost intimidating.”
One aesthetic difference between your Mustang model and this Jazz is that you didn’t throw a racing stripe on this one.
“I thought about bringing it back and keeping the continuity. Maybe somewhere down the line we’ll throw a racing stripe on this. The thing with [seeing a] racing stripe was always like, 'This player is a badass!'”
Is there a psychology behind removing the racing stripe, then?
“The psychology behind it is that I forgot about it. When My Chemical Romance was talking about doing reunion shows [in 2019], I’d contacted Michael Schulz from Fender and was like, 'Is it OK if I make a new bass for this [next] era of My Chemical Romance?' I wanted to take my past and bring it to the future – taking my Mustang and melding it with the Jazz Basses that I loved so much.
“I tried to have my cake and eat it, too. I wanted the thinner neck, and I wanted the silver-flake, but I wanted it on a Jazz Bass. They knocked it out of the park immediately.”
Getting back to how you used to admire those silver-flake guitars in the shops, you actually started out as a guitarist, right?
“So, the story goes that my brother [My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerard Way] had a Sears acoustic guitar when he was 10 years old. We would take a shoelace and make a strap, and we would stand on the couch pretending we were in Iron Maiden. And then it got real around ’93-’94, which lines up with the rise of alternative music. You started to see people that looked exactly like you, and they were playing guitar. They were playing Fender Strats!
“My brother got a Mexican Stratocaster, Lake Placid Blue. I found it not too long ago, and Michael from Fender hot-rodded it. That’s how I cut my teeth – that Mexican Stratocaster [was] my first foray into really trying to learn how to play guitar. I would watch bootlegs of concerts, and watch [guitarists’] hands and fingers – Thom Yorke, Billy Corgan, Noel Gallagher, Jonny Greenwood. I would watch what they were doing. It all started from that.
“Bass came out of necessity, twice. Me and my brother had a band called Ray Gun Jones, I guess in ’95-’96. It was kind of Weezer-ish, or us doing a surf-punk thing [with] a little bit of pre-mid-west emo. At the time we were really into Weezer, Jawbreaker, Promise Ring, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate.
“[Ray Gun Jones] needed a bass player, so my brother was like 'Hey, do you want to play bass for my band?' I was already a huge fan – I’d always tag along to practices. The ex-bass player let me borrow their bass. We had 4-5 songs, and I got the rudimentary from that. In that era, everyone was like, 'I want to be a guitar hero,' but I realized I had a natural knack for [bass]. I picked it up right away.
“Then, with My Chemical Romance, it was the same thing. My brother was like, 'We need a bass player,' and I was like, 'Well, this is familiar' [laughs]. 'Here’s the demo; learn these songs.' They weren’t terribly difficult.”
Was that bass you had borrowed a Fender Jazz?
“Yup, I’ve only ever played Fender. I’ve tried tons of other basses from other companies, but it always feels alien to me.”
You mentioned studying the playing of Thom Yorke or Billy Corgan through those bootleg vids. Were there any bassists that you treated similarly, to understand the mechanics of bass?
“Matt Sharp from Weezer. I tried to ape him in the beginning, but my attack sounds vaguely reminiscent of a Smashing Pumpkins recording. I would learn Siamese Dream and Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and the Blue Album [the band’s 1994 self-titled debut] by Weezer. Those were the three albums that I put the most time into learning. That’s in my DNA.”
How about from a hyper-local perspective. If My Chemical Romance started out playing New Jersey basements and VFW halls, where there any bassists from that scene that inspired you, or that you appreciated?
“Yes! We shared a rehearsal space with this band called Pencey Prep – that was [MCR guitarist] Frank Iero’s original band. John McGuire was their bassist, and he let me borrow his equipment all the time. He taught me fundamentals, and gave me pointers – he taught me a whole heck of a lot.
“I always respected Tim Payne from Thursday, I loved his attack and stage presence. And when I’d watch Gabe Saporta from Midtown, I thought 'This dude is the coolest guy in the room.' He’s got this calm, cool, and collected [presence] that you can’t fake or learn. And then Eben D’amico from Saves the Day – brilliant!
“I would try to learn Saves the Day basslines. They were pretty complex [compared to] what most bands were doing in that scene. Most bands in the post-hardcore scene had simplistic basslines, but Saves the Day did not.
“There’s also Ray Toro, the guitar player of My Chemical Romance. Not only is he truly gifted at guitar, but he’s truly gifted at bass and drums – Ray can do everything. He was instrumental, early on, with showing me the ropes. Ray gave me lessons when I was a novice. I can’t thank him enough for that.”
What kind of pointers was he giving you?
“He showed me proper fretting, or [how to maintain] a steady attack. I got a really great compliment from our front-of-house guy, Jay Rigby. He told me that I’m one of the very few bass players that he doesn’t have to go in and tweak the volume [for]. 'You’re steady, throughout.' I think that’s something that Ray Toro instilled in me: the consistency of attack.
“It’s funny thinking about it, but I was such a novice going into My Chemical Romance that I would bring myself into an anxiety-ridden state of, 'Oh my god, we have a show tonight; I have to start practicing right now.' I would be practicing four to five hours before we played – I’d play the set [in the green room], and then I’d play it again. Other bands would be like, 'What are you doing?' I was so neurotic at that point, because there were so many people around me that were beyond gifted.
“I got pushed into the deep end; you’ve got no choice but to figure it out. Ray and Frank are so gifted that I had to keep up. I didn’t want to ever do the music a disservice.
“That brings me back to the simplicity of the early My Chem basslines. The first album [2002’s I Brought You Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love] was me learning the bass, and somehow [producer] John Naclerio recorded me and said, 'You did a great job,' which I did not expect.
“I thought I was going to go in there and they were going to have to do some studio magic, or someone would come in and play [my] part. I thought of the worst-case scenario, but I went in and did it. I played the bass seriously [enough] by that point.”
What are you generally looking for in a My Chemical Romance bassline?
“What makes it for me is if I do a fill, I’ll only do it once. If you listen to [the band's 2022 comeback single] The Foundations of Decay, any fill on there I only do one time. What’s interesting about The Foundations of Decay is that it’s very loose and run-and-gun. We went in and punched things in for timing, which everyone in the world does, but the meat of that is first-or-second take. Which brings me to someone else who was very instrumental to my bass playing: Doug McKean.
“He’s no longer with us, unfortunately, but he was our engineer from The Black Parade [until his passing in 2022]. He was always a huge cheerleader for me – he instilled confidence in me. He was always good at getting a killer performance out of me.”
What are some of the biggest My Chemical Romance bass moments for you?
“I’ll say that fill in on Foundations. No-one saw that coming.”
There’s a YouTube video out there of someone playing their favorite Mikey Way basslines, some while using your signature Squier Mustang, but one standout in particular is The Black Parade’s The Sharpest Lives.
“What’s funny is Sharpest Lives has a bass solo, and I was terrified of it. I had performance anxiety [through] the 12 years before we broke up – I don’t have it anymore. Somehow when the band got back together, a switch in my brain [got] flipped. [But] while My Chem was active, I was borderline terrified a lot of the time.
“I’m playing with people far above my skill level, I’m playing [on bills] with bands where their bass players are way better than me, [and] our shows were getting massive. We were playing arenas! So not only are you learning the bass, but you’re learning the bass in front of 20,000 people every night. It made me tweak a little, but I think it shaped me into what I became.
“That solo gave me anxiety. It was when we were playing the biggest venues of our career, and it would break for the solo [Way starts singing his ascending bass lick]. I practiced it relentlessly, then it [became] second nature. Later on, it [became my favorite part of the show.”
You’re already playing the Jazz signature in your live show, yeah?
“It’s what I use for the live show. Basically, Fender built [it] for the reunion, and then we made a couple tweaks for when we release it.”
Was there a learning curve at all towards transferring My Chemical Romance songs you’d written on a Mustang onto the Jazz?
“There was Planetary (GO!), a song off Danger Days. I’d guess you’d say the whole thing is a disco beat. It’s dance-y – [Mikey starts singing an octave-popping bassline], I do that for the entirety of the song. I was very happy that I only had to do that on a Mustang, initially [because of the shorter scale]. But going back to what I said, [after] I took a little break, [I] went back to a Jazz Bass.
“I missed the room, or the way my hand went up and down the neck. I wanted to go back to that, so I jumped back in and felt right at home again.”
How many Jazzes are you bringing on the road?
“I bring two basses out, [but] I stopped even switching [during the set]. This is a testament to Fender craftsmanship – that thing stays in tune. It’s got the four-saddle bridge, and it stays in tune so well. I’m a little neurotic so I’ll tune every few songs, but if I went five to six songs you probably wouldn’t even notice.”
What does it mean to you to now have a fully-formed Fender signature model – as opposed to the Squier – and with the body shape you began your career with?
“It’s really a dream come true. It’s funny, in 2002-3 we started touring across the country. I had a Mexican Jazz Bass, but [the band] were like, 'You have to use something with better electronics; better wood. Step it up!' So, I went into the Guitar Center on Route 46 in New Jersey, and at the time Fender had released a special Guitar Center edition that was silver-flake.
“It always bugged me that the pickguard was white – it threw me off, aesthetically, and I was like, 'I’m going to change that pickguard one day.' So, I got that, and I was using that for a while.
“We were out with [Boston emo quartet] Piebald – it was one of our first cross-country tours ever – and one night someone forgot to close the trailer door. We’re driving on the highway, and half the contents spilled out – unfortunately, my bass was a casualty of that.
“But Frank Iero, and his heart of gold, jumped out on the highway in the middle of the night and tried to recover [the bass]. He was like, 'Maybe we can fix it!' I’ll never forget him doing that. He got a chunk of it – it’s in one of our storage units.”

Dogstar - Breathe Tonight 1996
"Breathe Tonight" is one of the songs featured on Our Little Visionary, the 1996 debut album by Dogstar, an American alternative rockband formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991. The band consists of drummer Robert Mailhouse, bassist Keanu Reeves and guitarist Bret Domrose, who joined in 1994 and later replacing founding member (Gregg Miller) in 1995 to become the vocalist. They were initially active from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, during which time the band found moderate success but garnered significant media attention due to Keanu Reeves being an Hollywood actor. The band started jam sessions again in 2020, and announced their reunion in 2022. Their latest album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees, was released on October 6, 2023.
The genesis of Dogstar was a chance encounter between Robert Mailhouse and Keanu Reeves in a supermarket in 1991. Mailhouse was wearing a Detroit Red Wings hockey sweater, and Reeves (an avid hockey fan and a keen player of the sport) asked if Mailhouse needed a goalie. As the two men formed a friendship, they began jamming together. In 1995, the band toured extensively throughout the US and Asia, and opened for David Bowie at his 1995 Hollywood Palladium gig, as well as for Bon Jovi on their 1995 These Days – Crossroads Tour in Australia and New Zealand.
"Breathe Tonight" received a total of 69,1% yes votes!

What remains of us, pt. 7
Tumblr media
Summary: On the night of a certain class' ten year reunion, some familiar faces return to school, driving a wedge between Wally and Y/N.
Warnings: death, angst, mentions of mental health issues, fluff, mentions of a SCHOOL SHOOTING, swearing
Word count: 2.0k
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
It's easy to lose track of time when you're having fun. The concept of being stuck in between worlds was daunting at first, but Y/N almost fears leaving it now. The spirit world became her home, filled with certainties she spend months accepting and creating, but now they're a part of her; he is a part of her.
Wally Clark felt like both a blessing and a curse, for she never expected meeting her soulmate would mean she would have to die. Falling in love with anyone else feels impossible now that she knows what love is. It's the way Wally's eyes melt into hers, the way his lips curve just before a breathtaking smile shines through, the way he smells of rain and leather. She finds it in the gentle tone of his warm voice whenever he sees her anxiety creeping up on her, in the sweetness of his guitar melody he claims is inspired by her laugh, in his passionate kisses and tasty pancakes. Loving Wally is as easy as breathing, being loved by him is a work of art.
It's no wonder, before either of them knew it, a year had passed. And then another. And another. On the fourth year, Yuri passed on and reality hit them full force.
"Should we -" Wally pauses, averting his gaze to the ground.
"We should," she sighs. "That doesn't mean we have to."
Locking eyes with Wally, she sees the note of surprise and perhaps a flicker of horror in the earthly brown hues.
"I mean, we have a good thing going here," her voice is shaky, "Right?"
Scratching the back of his head, he nods faintly. "We do. A really good thing!"
"So, why risk it? Huh? Going into our scars, traumatizing ourselves for who knows how long before we can finally move on is insane when we don't know where the hell we would be moving on to!"
"Maybe hell isn't the best choice of words right now," Wally chuckles. He can see she is stressed about it, about losing them and so is he, but there's no doubt in his heart...Y/N is his soulmate and wherever she goes he will follow - heaven or hell, he will be there. There isn't a force in the universe that can keep him from her.
"I'm serious, Wally." Hand on her chest, her eyebrows furrow. "I don't think I'm ready to go through that yet."
Reaching for her hand, he contains a wince as she pulls away. He can't remember the last time she refused his touch.
"I will never push you to do something you don't want to, but I have to ask you to at least consider it."
Licking her lips, she nods meekly. "Okay."
"Okay?"
"I will consider it," she promises.
The answer satisfied Wally for a few more years. At least on the surface, he didn’t show it bothered him at all. In his heart though…he was tired. Wally’s mother stopped coming to the games the same year Y/N arrived. He knew she was gone, just like his father. No one who once loved him is alive today, only some still remember him. Even Maddie…he’s certain she let him go. She returned to the school only once after graduating – to leave him her old MP3 player filled with songs that remind her of him…of them. He’s kept it close all these years, a secret he couldn’t bare before Y/N.
Truth is, he misses Maddie. She was his first love. Y/N will be his last and he would never change that.
Except, his past had come back to haunt him.
“Ten years,” Xavier sighs. “Feels like only yesterday yet a thousand years apart in some ways.”
“Do you recognize any of these people?” Y/N’s eyebrows furrow ever so slightly, a compassionate tone coloring her voice. She became rather good friends with Xavier over the years. Not that he’d agree. What she called socializing, he deemed as pestering. He enjoyed his hidden corner in the library, but Y/N could tell his eyes would light up whenever she came around to ‘bother’ him.
“Yeah. Some. They don’t quite seem the same.”
“In what way?”
Swallowing thickly, he gives her a pointed look. “It’s been 10 years for them – they’ve aged. Life left marks, good for some, bad for others.”
“Right,” she frowns. “The world keeps spinning for them, while ours is standing still.”
“And while we are frozen in time, unable to face our reality and move forward, they get to experience everything that was stolen from us.”
“You resent them for it?”
Shaking his head lightly, his blue eyes focus on her little frown. “I resent myself for being too much of a coward to let this world go, far more than I could resent them for leaving me behind.”
Licking her lips, she wraps her arms around him gently. “I don’t see it as an act of cowardice. It’s about healing…That is bound to take a lot of time.” Pulling away, she smiles softly. “To face your scar and everything that’s gotten you here, you have to heal first. Otherwise it’s just torture without a chance of finding a way out.”
“You’ve never even went to yours,” Xavier points out. “What exactly does Wally tell you about it?”
“What he’s heard from others who were trying before succeeding and leaving this world for good.”
Raising a brow, Xavier takes her hand and pulls her closer. “What does he say of his own experience?”
Narrowing her eyes at him, she tears her hand out from him, This is why she never talks about Wally with him. It feel as if he has it out for him and she can’t understand why. “He’s never been to his scar either.”
“That’s –“ A heavy sigh passes his lips. “I promise I’m not trying to start shit, okay? But Wally…” Xavier’s frown deepens as his eyes focus on something in the distance. She follows his line of sight as Xavier continues. “He’s been to his scar. He’s conquered it. Wally chose to stay.”
Feeling the knot in the back of her throat growing, making it harder to swallow, Y/N’s eyes finally find what Xavier focused on – Wally…and he’s not alone.
A girl with long blonde hair is right next to him, her eyes trained on his, her smile almost as wide as Wally’s. She looks…gorgeous, like a model would. She was pretty in her yearbook photo, but now? Y/N couldn’t come close to that.
“That’s Maddie.” Xavier speaks quietly in her ear, as if she didn’t know.
She isn’t talking to herself like others may believe – she’s talking to Wally.
Her Wally.
“She almost chose to stay here for him.”
The same Wally who could have moved on before, but chose not to. The one who told her lies for the past six years – and as it seems, the worst one was this – he isn’t over Maddie.
“You said you weren’t trying to start shit,” Y/N reminds him, anger laced in her voice
“I’m not,” Xavier insists. “I like to consider you a friend, Y/N. And I don’t lie to my friends.”
“You let me believe his lies for the past six years,” she turns to him, her eyes filled with rage. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Why did you let me fall in love with him?”
“I tried telling you then, but you never seemed to waver in your affections. What was I supposed to do?”
Closing her eyes for a moment as she inhales deeply, she presses her lips in a thin line. “You’re right. I never gave you a chance or asked about it…Wally was never the topic of our conversations.”
“Look…I hate to admit it, but he’s obviously in love with you. Just…maybe talk it out and figure it out together?”
Scoffing, she glances at Wally walking away somewhere more private with Maddie by his side. “I think it’s a little late for that, don’t you? I mean, he had all the time in the world to tell me the truth and build solid foundations for this relationship. If he wanted to, he could have shared it all with me, but he chose secrecy and lies…again. I can’t pry it out of him by force and if he has lingering feelings for Maddie, to the point he’s been MIA this entire evening…then I’m not sure this can be fixed.”
“You’re jealous,” Xavier teases. “It’s not like he’s cheating.”
“It’s worse,” she claims. “He had me thinking he loves me. I’ve been tricked into baring my heart and soul while he kept parts of his only for her. It’s kind of hard not to feel cheated and betrayed by him when you come to that realization.”
Turning to leave, she feels Xavier’s hand wrap around her wrist. “Where are you going?”
“To face my fears.” Looking back at him, she manages a smile. “If this is the last time we see each other…Thank you.”
“What for?”
“Friendship…Honesty. All of it. I hope we meet again sometime.”
“Once I’m healed?”
Her smile widens. “You’re not broken, Xavier. Perhaps a little bent, but when you’re ready to move on, I don’t think your scar can stop you. In a year…or more…when you make it to the other side, make sure to find me. I’d like to ‘bother’ you some more.”
Clenching his jaw to stop it from quivering, he nods. “Will do.”
He releases her wrist, watching her walk away into a dark hallway. As she disappears from sight, Xavier lets his eyes water. She was his only real friend here…He’ll be alone again. This time, forever.
“Hey.”
Looking to his side, he finds someone from his old life.
“Simon,” he acknowledges. “Surprised you came here after everything.”
“My therapist says I need to face my past fears.”
Chuckling, he nods. “Yeah, that seems to be the running theme here.”
“I hoped you’d be gone by now,” Simon confesses.
“Almost everyone else is,” Xavier shrugs.
“Who remained?”
“Wally, myself, the band. There’s a janitor, but he’s looping still. And…”
“And?”
“Y/N. She was a doctor…killed in the school shooting.”
“Oh…I didn’t even consider she’d be stuck here too. The story about her death was huge.”
“What did they say?”
“A rookie cop shot her dead. He was frightened hearing someone coming closer, he just took the shot without even checking who he aimed at.”
Xavier’s eyes widen.
“The kid who actually shot up the school didn’t hurt anyone…The rookie ended up shooting him at the station. He tried to set the kid up. Claimed he got out of his restrains and attacked him. It took like five years for it all to come to light. They made a documentary last year when they passed anti-gun laws…named after her.”
“She doesn’t know,” he mutters.
“Know what?”
“She just decided to go into her scar for the first time…she doesn’t know who killed her!”
“So?”
“Remember how easy it is to get trapped in your scar even when you know the circumstances of your death? Now imagine walking into it unprepared!”
Rolling his eyes, Simon sighs. “Okay. Let’s go stop her.”
“No. I’m going to stop her and you need to get Wally there immediately! If there’s anyone who can pull her back out, it’s him.”

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— warnings: modern!au, no crash au, slight ooc maybe (oopsie), not x reader but if you squint it might be, she’s medicated, sfw
— a/n: hi guys! starting my tumblr comeback with some headcanons! currently hyperfixated on yellowjackets (lottie in particular) so feel free to send any and all requests my way. i’ve been super demotivated recently (recently as in the past 6 months) but i think im gonna start slowly making a comeback now! i think it’s all down to a lack of creativity using character ai & making bots. which will now be stopping! anyways i hope you guys enjoy!
Tumblr media
⋆˚࿔ this girl gives me SUCH english major vibes it’s crazy. she loves poetry so much and you will never catch lottie without a book in hand.
⋆˚࿔ lottie is #1 plant mom of the dorms. she has so many fucking plants it’s hard to keep up. she has names for EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. she tries her best to talk to all of them everyday and gets upset when she’s too busy to talk to her ‘children’.
⋆˚࿔ she’s super into indie music! loves a good acoustic version of any song. she really wanted to learn acoustic guitar at one point but gave up very quickly.
⋆˚࿔ hates it when people see her and immediately think ‘mean girl’. she definitely has a reputation that precedes her (rich girl & aggressive soccer player…) but she is super nice when you give her a chance!
⋆˚࿔ her free time is spent thrifting and studying! she didn’t understand the need for thrifting when she has lots of money to spend on expensive designer clothes, but nat dragged her along one time and she hasn’t looked back since.
⋆˚࿔ definitely not computer smart and wishes we could ‘go back to the simpler days’ of writing letters instead of texting (she swears letters are more romantic) even though she has never written a single letter in her life.
⋆˚࿔ is that one girl who ALWAYS has amazing lunch. lottie definitely got caught up in the cucumber salad tiktok trend and brought them to lunch everyday for WEEKS.

A Very Merry Metal Christmas
Tumblr media
Eddie Munson x Reader
Ficmas Day 6
Summary: Eddie hates Christmas music and you love it so you find a compromise.
Words: 387
A/N: Divider by @saradika-graphics
Tumblr media
“Eddie, baby, can we please listen to some Christmas music?” you ask your boyfriend as you slide into the passenger seat of his van.
His hand lands on your thigh as you settle into the seat. His ring laden fingers tap along to the beat of the song blaring from the radio.
As the song ends he glances in your direction only to be met with your pouting face. “You know I can’t say no to that face babe.” He lifts his hand to turn the dial on the radio looking for a station playing Christmas music that he deems bearable.
After he skips through numerous Christmas stations you finally reach out and grab his hand. Placing it back on your leg you reach into your coat pocket and pull out a cassette tape. He eyes you for a moment before turning his attention back to the road. You slip the cassette into the player and once it loads the sounds of guitars and drums fill the car.
“This doesn’t sound very Christmassy,” Eddie says.
“Give it a second,” you urge as a smile takes over your face.
Then just as promised the lyrics begin. The words to a familiar Christmas classic fill the car. Eddie turns to look at you, eyes wide. He opens and closes his mouth a few times before finally processing what he’s listening to.
“Babe, did you find metal Christmas music?” he asks in shock.
“Yeah, I know you don’t like regular Christmas music and I wanted us to both be happy so I searched around and found this.”
He squeezes your thigh in appreciation, taking a moment to let the words sink in. “I love you so fucking much,” Eddie gushes. You lean across the center console and press a kiss to his cheek.
“You know, I bet you could do some covers and people would love it. I know I would.”
“Babe, if it’s what you want then it’s settled Corroded Coffin is gonna make a Christmas album.”
You do a little happy dance in your seat before intertwining your fingers with his. The cool metal presses against your skin and you lay your head back. Content to let the music fill the silence as you take in what is shaping up to be one of the best Christmases yet.

a goddamn rockstar
for @corrodedcoffinfest prompt 'eddie'

🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Eddie Munson was born to be a goddamn rockstar.
His mama told him before he could even hold a guitar: "You're gonna show this world what music is, string bean."
His Uncle Wayne told him when he was crying at her grave: "You're gonna sing for her, Ed."
Jeff's dad even looked at him in awe the first time he watched him play and said: "You've got what they look for, Eddie."
His guitar was an extension of him from the moment Wayne gave it to him, never out of sight if he could help it. Wayne would joke that it would melt to his hands in the heat of summer while he sat on the porch strumming through whatever song was on repeat in Eddie's mind.
He could play by ear, a gift that he was lucky to have since they couldn't afford lessons or those books at the record shop that showed actual music. A song would play on the radio or on Wayne's record player, and within two days, Eddie would be playing it like he wrote it himself.
Wayne would watch in awe, watching his fingers glide across the frets like it was as easy as breathing.
When he formed his band, he was clearly the guy who would lead them somewhere. Jeff, Frankie, and Gareth were talented, of course they were. He wouldn't have bothered with them if they weren't.
But they were doing this for fun, because they thought it would be cool to get to play on a stage, maybe have an audience beyond their parents and unwilling siblings and cousins.
Eddie was doing this because this was what his life was going to be. This was his future. His everything.
They practiced twice a week, they played at The Hideout every Tuesday, and then every Thursday when more than a few people bothered to show up. Wayne made sure to switch his days off so he could be there to "babysit", an agreement between the owner and him when he saw how young they were.
They competed in the school talent show, but didn't even place. It was rigged anyway. Only the popular kids ever won it.
They took a day trip to Indy for Gareth's 16th birthday, playing at a pop-up show for local bands. Not quite a Battle of the Bands, but still a fun time.
Nothing came of it except for Jeff finding a girlfriend who would break his heart a month later, but they were glad to have the experience.
It still wasn't enough for Eddie.
But it became irrelevant when hell tried to take him, and then when cops tried to after he barely made it out of that alive.
He owed everything to Nancy Wheeler and Hopper, though.
He'd make sure to dedicate his first album to them.
God, Hopper would hate that. He couldn't wait.
It took him three months to pick up his guitar again. His dexterity wasn't the best anymore, and his biggest worry was that he wouldn't be able to play at the level he'd been at before.
Steve convinced him, though. Shyly asked him if he knew any Blondie, and of course Eddie knew Blondie. So he played Blondie.
Steve kissed him after.
Eddie decided to add Blondie to their shows and Steve to the front row.
As soon as Gareth graduated, they went to Chicago, looking for opportunity.
All of them wanted it, but Eddie needed it.
Steve came with them, and so did Robin. Frankie tried to make a move on Robin, got told to lose his dick, and then they became good friends. They all shared a rented house in the suburbs, rundown and needing more work than any of them could possibly give it, but it was a roof over their heads.
They didn't get many gigs, and the ones they did were for free or barely enough to cover the cost of gas to get to them.
But they didn't stop trying.
The one thing that everyone always commented on was how Eddie was made for the stage.
Corroded Coffin got lucky. That's what anyone in the business would say.
They happened to be filling in for a band last minute at a festival. It wasn't even supposed to be metal music. But they toned down their sound for their set, focusing on rock hits that all of them enjoyed.
They put on a hell of a show.
And someone was watching, someone who could make something happen for them.
Within a month, they were recording a demo of their real sound for a label, including two original songs and two covers. Two months later, they were signing a contract that didn't completely suck and booking studio time.
It was almost too much at once. After wanting it for so long, Eddie thought maybe he wasn't actually supposed to be doing this.
It was long nights, longer days, and arguments he never thought he'd have with his closest friends and boyfriend. It was finding balance between his music and his family. It was not knowing if all of this would even pay off for them, for him.
But their album did better than even the label could have expected, better than any of them had dared hope. They were planning a tour. They had t-shirts that Eddie didn't have to make himself.
He had Steve with a VIP badge backstage every night.
Eddie Munson was a goddamn rockstar.
