Brazil signs demarcation of Guarani indigenous territories

Brazil’s Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, signed declaratory ordinances in Brasília recognizing seven indigenous territories of the Guarani people in the state of São Paulo. The designated territories are Jaraguá, Pindoty/Araça-Mirim, Guaviraty, Tapy'i/Rio Branquinho, Amba Porã, Djaiko-aty, and Peguaoty.

The official recognition occurred on Wednesday (Oct. 23), in the presence of Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara, marking the end of an eight-year hiatus in the demarcation of indigenous lands in this state.

To finalize the demarcation process, a final step remains: the publication of a decree signed by the country’s president.

Cihuacōātl was one of a number of motherhood and fertility goddesses in Aztec mythology. She was sometimes known as Quilaztli. Cihuacōātl was especially associated with midwives, and with the sweat lodges where midwives practiced. She is paired with Quilaztli and was considered a protectress of the Chalmeca people and patroness of the city of Culhuacan. She helped Quetzalcoatl create the current race of humanity by grinding up bones from the previous ages, and mixing it with his blood. She is also the mother of Mixcoatl, whom she abandoned at a crossroads. Tradition says that she often returns there to weep for her lost son, only to find a sacrificial knife.

Tupã is considered to be the creator of the universe, of humanity and of the spirits of good and evil in Guarani mythology referred to as Angatupyry and Tau respectively. Tupã is more specifically considered the creator of light and his residence is the Sun. Tupã was not actually a god, but rather a manifestation of God, in the form of thunder. Tupã, according to Câmara Cascudo, is an adaptation of catechism, which also existed in concept for the Amerindians, but as the "sound of thunder" (tu-pá or tu-pã), an unknown (and thus feared) phenomenon. There's been an unprecedented level of flooding in the southernmost state of Brasil, and native Guarani families require urgent donations!

Because of economy bullshit, any amount of Dollars or Euros or similar high value currency will be worth more than it would be in the US or Europe (basically because exchange rates aren't equal to the buying power of a currency. Donating 10 dollars is about equivalent to someone receiving 15 dollars if it was in the USA! So donating 100 dollars would be equivalent to 150, etc you get the idea). So donations in Dollars and Euros or Pounds are all very welcome

Avá-Guarani Indigenous people are a target of violent attacks in southern Brazil

In a new attack, big farmers kill the communities' domestic animals and spray pesticides around the houses

The Avá-Guarani community, located in the Tekoha Guasu Guavira Indigenous Land in Guaíra, in the state of Paraná, was the target of yet another violent attack by big farmers on Thursday morning (17). The conflict left two Indigenous people injured, one after being run over by a truck and the other beaten with sticks by men identified as employees of a rural property in the region.   

Based on reports from residents of the community, a truck and four tractors loaded with poison advanced on the Yvyju Avary community, inside the Indigenous Land, at around 10 am, allegedly at the behest of a big farmer who is demanding the expulsion of the Indigenous people from the area. The National Public Security Force was called in to intervene, and the victims were taken to a hospital. “The big farmers have a truck full of non-Indigenous people making attacks. They've run over people and also killed the community's dogs,” said Indigenous leader Nazany Martins.   

According to the Guarani Yvyrupa Commission (CGY, in Portuguese), the Avá-Guarani community live in constant tension due to big farmers' attacks against Indigenous territories that are being regularized. One big farmer in the region agreed to negotiate the sale of his land for the demarcation of the Indigenous Lands, while another chose to resist violently, escalating the conflicts.   

This attack is part of a series of aggressions that have been taking place in recent months. Last Sunday (13), the Y'hovy village, also in Guaíra, was shot at from a neighboring big farm after a suspicious car drove around the area filming Indigenous leaders. Although no one was injured in the incident, the atmosphere of insecurity persists.
