I’m trying to find a piece of fanart. It was either for the Star Wars prequel trilogy(more accurately one of Qui Gon’s padawans), the magnus archives(likely Mike Crew but maybe someone else), or perhaps someone from The Titan Army from Percy Jackson. All I remember is that someone said they headcanon that character as from Brazil, so they drew him as the Curupira

This took longer than I anticipated as I kept adding characters. As a refresher, I was designing characters who would inhabit the town setting for Celeste the Witch and this is the third (and probably) final line up I created for this. My main consideration was the different jobs you would find in a typical town with a few exceptions. Here are the characters from left to right.
First is a shady Mothman pawnshop owner would has extensive knowledge of history and artifacts but is a bit questionable how much of his collection is authentic. Next is a Banshee doctor who is quiet and soft spoken despite Banshees being known for their deafening wails. Next is a Bigfoot construction worker who's strength is only exceeded by his outgoing personality. Next is goth lamia who's a fellow student at Celeste's high school and possess a secret talent. A bottom left is a gargoyle teacher who's friendly and knowledge but a little slow at times. Next is an Oni mail carrier who body builds as a side hobby. I might redesign her uniform at some point as I don't you can use real world government agencies like the USPS for fictional works. Next is a Curupira (a Brazilian dwarf-like creature with backwards feet and fiery hair) student who loves extreme sports like skateboarding and surfing. Next is an eccentric field journalist, another of the few humans in town, who runs the local news station/website always on top of every interesting event that occurs. Next is a charming Gnome businessman (I'm switching between bank teller and real estate agent for him). Lastly is a mysterious and dramatic witch teaches as a performing arts professor at Celeste's school and at times her mentor when it comes to practicing magic. Her familiar is a small wyvern and I imagine her having a bigger roll in Celeste the Witch though I'm still figuring out what that is (have to put my Wacom pen down long enough to write stuff).
As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

Headcanons sobre o Curupira 🧵
Tumblr media

Curupira
The name comes from the Tupi language kuru'pir, meaning "covered in blisters". According to the cultural legends, this creature has bright red/orange hair, and resembles a man or a dwarf, but its feet are turned backwards. Curupira lives in the forests of Brazil and uses its backward feet to create footprints that lead to its starting point, thus making hunters and travelers confused. Besides that, it can also create illusions and produce a sound that is like a high pitched whistle, in order to scare and drive its victim to madness.
Tumblr media
A Curupira will prey on poachers and hunters that take more than they need of the forest, and he also attacks people who hunt animals that were taking care of their offspring. There are many different versions of the legend, and so the creature's appearance and habits may vary from each region in Brazil. However, Curupira is considered a nationwide folkloric figure.

Curupira and Caipora have always been my favorite creatures from Brazilian mythology/folklore.
Tumblr media
The Curupira is a being of Brazilian folklore, origin is in the Tupi-Guarani indigenous mythology. The word "Curupira" can mean "curumim" (young indigenous child) + pira (body).
Known as small, he has red hair, and his feet are positioned backwards (There are variations of his appearance, often described as "having fiery phosphorescent hair", as sometimes described with green skin tone, and there are versions where have the usual size and form of an adult, rather than small. Sometimes depicted as furry, usually depicted as a boy, but there are female variations).
He inhabits the woods and forest, acts as its guardian against all those who seek to destroy it, punishes those who enter in his territory to do evil.
Curupira likes to play tricks on hunters who enter the forest. He can disguise himself and thus attract the attention of the hunters, who starts chasing his supposed prey. As his feet are turned in the opposite direction, the footprints confuse those who follow him, causing them to get lost in the middle of the forest. He can also torment hunters with a deafening hiss.
To prevent themselves, offereding gifts to this protector. Two gifts that pleased him very much, according to legend, are cachaça and pipe with tobacco.
Caipora is a being present in Brazilian folklore, origin is in Tupi-Guarani indigenous mythology. The word “Caipora” means “inhabitant of the woods”.
Known as an indigenous girl of small stature and reddish hair (There are representations as a boy, although is less frequent. Constantly confused or associated with Curupira, as if were the same creature).
She resides deep within the forest, protecting animals from hunters who kill more animals than they need.
In some versions the Caipora would ride a peccary and resurrect animals during her role to protect them from hunters. Through various noises, can distract hunters by offering false clues until they get lost in the forest. Additionally, she has the power to control animals by helping them evade capture or inciting them against hunters.
There is an association that Caipora leaves people unlucky. They say that possible to ask Caipora not to attack them, giving her gifts, like a pipe and tobacco and saying: "Toma Caipora, deixa eu ir embora" (translation: "take here Caipora, let me go". P.s: in Brazilian Portuguese this phrase is a rhyme).
Caipora is recognized as the guardian of animals, while the Curupira is regarded as the guardian of the woods/forests. Both important for the protection and maintenance of the fauna and flora, or all the ecosystem. They are punitive beings against those who threaten the place where they live.

South American folklore: respect nature or its beasts will come for you
I love folklore so much because depending on the location and era it comes from it's either the most terrifying concept or the dumbest thing you've ever heard
