YELLSSSS JUSTIN THERE ARE SO MANY BLORBOS!! This has also been tricky to think about because 'a romantic evening for a significant other' is not (necessarily) the same thing as 'a date', and also all of my OCs have either not been in an actual relationship in a long time, or have not been in one uhhh ever at all lmao

Elyss's idea of a romantic evening is private and intimate; I feel like she would plan something like an evening walk in the woods, but depending on the other person maybe also something cozy, like staying in and reading together by the fire (preferably the other person reading out loud to her)? I don’t think she’d plan anything near water for a romantic evening in case it distracted her (unless her partner can also breathe underwater, in which case yes yes obviously yes WHAT could be more romantic than sharing the overwhelming joy and peace of the quiet depths with someone you love)

Idri gets all her ideas about Romance from books and goes over the top setting up a fancy candlelit dinner, dancing, roses, chocolates, wine, rose petals all over the bedroom-- a very archetypal Whole Shebang. She can't cook, so the fancy dinner is at a fancy restaurant. She's the exact perfect blend of self-aware of how ridiculous it all is and playfully playing into that, while also being completely earnest about wanting it to be really fun and nice-- winking at them over the rose in her teeth, but only because she knows it’ll make them laugh

For Juniper, I feel like a part of her might be inclined to try to Do Things Correctly, especially if she’s not very confident yet in the relationship-- dinner, flowers, candles, dressing up probably. But if she’s more comfortable, she’d plan something less formally by the book, but more romantic to her, personally-- something like stargazing together, or getting up early just to watch the sunrise. There would still be flowers, but it’d be less ‘an obligatory bouquet in a vase’ and more ‘a bed of druidcrafted flowers she’s set up where they’re going to be stargazing’ or ‘a wild blossom tenderly tucked into her partner’s hair’

Aubree dotes-- she's cleaned the whole house, she's got a hot bath with candles and fancy soaps ready for them, she cooks their favorite dinner and dessert and presents it all as artfully as she can, and there's a bouquet of wildflowers on the table cause you've gotta have flowers if you're being romantic, she’s gonna give them a back rub at some point, etc. There’s also gonna be a lot of wine, cause wine pairs well with dinner and with dessert and with a cheese board and with backrubs and romantic bubble baths and suddenly that’s A Fair Bit, haha

Melliwyk is not especially good or well practiced at romance, so I think she’d struggle to figure out how to plan a romantic evening at all :’) I think she’d generally lean on Going Out (because that's what people do, isn't it?)-- a nice restaurant, or a museum or something-- preferably stuff more in line with the latter, because what could be more romantic than bonding over experiencing something interesting together? She probably would also bring a gift-- specifically, something personal and handmade

Nyssa’s romantic evening emphasizes sensuality; this is wine and chocolates in bed, surrounded by flowers and silks, and if you’re not already naked you’re overdressed. Her ‘plans’ aren’t any more specific than setting aside the entire evening, but the loose plan is to lounge and bask and talk and feed each other grapes and get drunk and play music and kiss a lot and get frisky whenever the spirit moves them

Kethri is the kind of person who loves going out and doing stuff, so I think a romantic evening (as opposed to a basic date night) would be a private night in, to center the relationship/ her partner and how much she cares about them. She’d dress up however she knows her partner likes best, and she’s probably written a song just for them, which she plays for them over after-dinner drinks by the fire. Kethri tends to be really playful and cheeky, so I think if she's planning a romantic evening it's going to highlight her tender and sincere side

Felix, even moreso than anyone else, is very minutely tailoring his to his partner’s tastes. In general, he really loves seeing people light up about the things that interest them and make them happy, so in a relationship, being able to do that for his partner would be the height of romance for him-- especially if it gives them an opportunity to get excited and talk about what interests them, like going to a play by a playwright they love so they can discuss the themes afterward, or whatever.

Um, also, this is a crossover ship I’ve only very casually indulged but this is SO specific to them I can’t just generalize about it: if the partner is Melliwyk, he has boobytrapped her entire house. Like, this is the ‘scavenger hunt that leads to the bedroom’ thing, but instead of clues that are just sheets of paper that amount to ‘look in the toaster’ the clues are all, like, meticulously planned escape room puzzles and actual riddles and shit. Also, they actually lead not to the bedroom but to a hot bath and an actual dinner, because the woman needs to be lovingly tricked into eating and relaxing literally ever

everyone has to be a little less mean to themselves about not reading enough books. letting go of reading as a pride thing is the first step to relearning how to actually enjoy reading for pleasure again. it's totally fine to start with a novella or with a comic or with a field guide or with literature meant for someone younger instead of being mad at yourself for not grokking ulysses in a week. just vary your diet and you'll be good.

Hey, we need to talk about the way Batfamily fans write Cass using ASL, because a lot of it is really fucking ableist

But Cass can't speak, of course she needs to sign!

Not true! There is nothing physically wrong with Cass's vocal chords or mouth, there's nothing in her brain stopping her from making sounds, and she is not an elective mute. She actually learns to speak individual words really quickly after she puts herself into an environment where that's a useful skill. Basil teaches her to quote huge chunks of Shakespeare in Nu52, and that's easier for her than forming simple sentences. That would definitely not be the case if she had any physical limitations on her speech.

Cass's disability is that she was not taught any language, and so she is having to grok the entire concept of language from the ground up. Grammar and syntax; tonality; how to combine words to convey more complex ideas; how putting two words next to one another can change their meaning; how to break down a whole idea into the individual parts needed to turn it into words; the fact that people's words might not line up with their tone and body language so you have to pay attention to both; how to tell if someone wants a response or is stating a fact; how to work out meaning from context if a word is new or someone has an unfamiliar accent; how to know if someone is using a new word or if they actually just have an unfamilar accent and all the ways words can be bent and changed before they become something new; the fact that two words can use the same sounds but have the same meaning; the fact that there can be two different words that mean the same thing. This is all stuff she didn't learn as a baby, and not knowing it would be just as much an impediment to learning ASL as learning English (for accent, swap out things like having limited movement in their hands, or having learned slightly different forms of the same sign, using a lot of home-signs etc, it's the same concept in a different medium).

There is no language on earth Cass wouldn't have these problems with. ASL is not any kind of shortcut.

But she reads body language, and ASL is kind of like body language right?

Not true, also pretty abelist! Just as the sounds which make up spoken language are essentially arbitrary (there's no objective reason why the sound "gud" should mean good, English speakers just all agree it does) so most of the signs in ASL are arbitrary! There's no reason for

to mean good. ASL users just all agree that it does. Cass knowing body language would not help her any more with ASL than it would with English, and if anything, it might make it harder, because sign uses the whole body and therefore changes the way people use body language so unless she saw a lot of ASL users as a child (and there's no particular reason to think she did), she would have to adjust what she knows about body language to account for those differences!

But she signs in the comics!

Nope! She uses hand gestures to communicate sometimes, but that's not signing. Pointing at food and miming eating to convey hunger is not sign. Pretending to punch someone and pulling it at the last second to convey you could hurt them but won't (Cass's actual first communication with Bruce in the comics) isn't signing. I've done the point and mime thing in countries where I didn't speak the language, that does not mean I knew that country's native sign language!

But she learns ballet, that's like a physical language, so sign is the same thing!

Nope! Also low key kinda abelist. Dance is a method of communication, but it isn't a full language. There's almost no grammar or sentence structure, the vocabulary is extremely limited, and also you can just make up new dance moves or use moves from different styles of dance together and still convey your meaning (you cannot just make random gestures or use BSL and expect ASL users to understand you, because they're full complex languages). Cass vibes with dance pretty hard, but that's precisely because it isn't a language, it doesn't require any of the skills she struggles with in order to communicate emotion.

But ASL isn't like a real language, it's not as complex or nuanced as spoken English so it would be easier for her to learn

(For context, makatong is a form of sign developed for people who have intellectual or phsyical disabilities that affect language use, which uses more descriptive signs which require less precise hand possitioning than other sign languages, and which has very simple grammar, making it easier to learn than ASL). Yes this would be easier for her, because it's intended for people with similar difficulties to hers, but since her difficulties stem purely from a lack of experience which can be (and are, in canon) overcome with practise, it would be kind of needlessly limiting compared to her just starting out with very simple spoken language, and wouldn't give her as many chances to develop those language learning skills. Makatong is also not mutually intelligable with any other sign language, so she couldn't easily transition from that to ASL once she got used to signing, she'd have to start learning it from scratch.

But I HC her as deaf

There is 0 comics evidence to support that, but it's a headcanon, so who cares. You do you. Have fun.

That is not even slightly how it work. Go read the wikipedia article on sign languages around the world or something. Do some research.

TL:DR; Cass does not use ASL in the comics, and nothing about her disability or sign languages in general would make learning ASL easier or more convinent for her than spoken English. That does't mean writing her signing is inherently bad, but you should examine your reasons for doing it to ensure you're not just perpetuating ableist stereotypes about the language.

Yeah, I think there's a decent chance of that. It was weird that the stranded Future Jade never tried to contact her co-players, and one of the simplest answers was that she'd simply stopped existing. I live in hope, though!

Update: I've built two nuclear reactors so far, for fusion and fission respectively. If you didn’t know, I’m working on a full-fledge Star Trek Prodigy comic book. It’ll feature a few short stories within, told in comic format. This gal is one of the characters from an upcoming storyline.

Her name is Jolene (Goes by Jo!) and she’s a punk musician currently traveling with her family. She likes baking, loud music, and punching section 31 agents in their grok-nards.

I had a lot of fun with her design, and I think everyone’s going to like the stories. The first two drafts and blocking are complete, so while it might take me a bit to get the finished product done (College is my first priority tbh) I think everyone is going to love the fun stuff I have in store, including a Wesley Crusher centered story in another comic.

For those who really aren’t into comics, I’ll be writing these stories out in fic format at a later point.

A Non-Exhaustive Guide to Future and Alternative Swearing in DC Comics.

Legionnaires #23 Swears curtesy of the Legionnaire's resident potty mouth Querl Dox aka Brainiac 5.

Being that DC spans many different periods in time there are many different curses and swears that have been used with varying degrees of frequency among multiple characters.

Bart Allen and other time displaced characters are some of those in the modern timestream that use some of the following in place of English swears. Otherwise the bulk of these words are used in comics such Legion of Super-Heroes and sometimes in comics that take place off-world.

To note, most of these swear words are supposed to be taken directly from Interlac, the universal language spoken by everyone in the 31st century as a unifying interstellar language.

Interlac is a language that is many thousands of years old by the 31st century, and the same Interlac language exists in the 21st century as well. There are some references that the language does shift over the thousand years of time passage, but it is still recognizable between speakers.

Without further elaboration here is a non-exhaustive list of the most common swears, their approximate meaning, and general time/place/characters they are used in/by.

Grife

Meaning: Fuck/Shit.

An intense swear used as an expletive for surprise or frustration. Sometimes used as "fucking" where -ing is attached to the end.

Used commonly in the 31st century and by Bart Allen in the 21st century.

Sprock

Meaning: Also Fuck/Shit.

An intense swear used as an expletive for surprise or frustration. Sometimes used as "fucking" where -ing is attached to the end. Is generally interchangeable with grife. Sometimes, both grife and sprock are combined to create compound swears such as "gee-sprocking-rife" courtesy of Brainiac 5.

Used commonly in the 31st century by all Legionnaires. Has made its way into other media such as the CW's Supergirl.

Nass/Nass-Head

Meaning: Shit/Ass

An expletive used often as an insult or as as a common crass intensifier. Most commonly used as "nass-head" in place of "shit-head" or "We're going to kick nass!" or "We're stepping in nass."

Used in the 31st century.

Scroach

Meaning: Bastard/Fucker

A derogatory uncommon/rare insult directed at someone. "That person is such a sprocking scroach I want to beat the nass out of them."

Used by a future version of Bart Allen in the Impulse comics during the Dark Tomorrow story arc. As far as I know, it is exclusive to the Impulse comics.

Grokk/Grok

Meaning: Shit/Fuck/Damn

An expletive used in surprise or frustration, much like sprock or grife.

This swear is used more commonly in 21st century interlac in comics like L.E.G.I.O.N. or comics that take place off of Earth. This swear has made it into other media as an Easter Egg such as in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I have an advice question. How would you suggest people get better at drawing Gross Creatures? Every time I try, they end up looking too cute to be fully Gross and I need to get past this cute hump so I can draw weird depressurized extra-dimensional creatures a la Blobfish but make it a wild boar or something (for a specific comic project I’ve been thinking about since I was 15, but also in general)

HEY i'm so glad you found my art & liked it! I don't know that I'm an expert as I'm pretty sure I make my gross creatures cute as well LOL, but maybe my perception as to what is cute and what isn't is a bit skewed!

i think the best advice i can give (note: this is what works for me! everyone has a different approach) when designing creatures is to think of a few animals you're drawing from and then do some life drawing studies of those creatures! for me, that helps me learn & understand the shapes and underlying Vibe of a thing. once you feel that you've sufficiently grokked the thing as is, then you can start fucking it up! body horror works when a thing is recognizable, but expected features are 'wrong' in some way. like when the fingers are just a little too long, or there are teeth where teeth shouldn't be, etc.

the blobfish is a great example irl! at the appropriate depth, it looks like a pretty standard fish, but when its brought up to the surface, it looks like That! body horror is really just about subverting the viewers expectation. we're all hard wired to perceive the world a very specific way, and so twisting it even a LITTLE can be unsettling! the human face is the easiest thing to exploit for this purpose.
