He scratched his chin. “I guess I should be more patient, but…”

“You know…” She drawled. “For a priest, you’re not very virtuous.”

He gave her a flat look.

“Just saying.” She grinned up at him.

“These days I feel less and less like a priest.”

“Good to know I’m not going to hell for sleeping with a priest.”

He snorted. “No, it’ll probably be for a variety of other reasons.”

“Why am I wearing a dress?”

Aramis gave her a look. “Is that supposed to be a tricky question?”

She glared at him and he sighed. “You wanted to enter the palace. The leather pants are quite charming, but they are conspicuous.”

“That’s because you keep looking at my ass.” She grumbled.

“I’m not the only one.”

“So this is better?” She indicated the decollage of her dress.

Aramis cleared his throat. “I mean... It depends on what you consider better. But…” He pressed when she narrowed her eyes at him. “Every woman in here is wearing the same style of dress, so it is not as noticeable as a woman in pants.”

Gretel snorted. “I feel ridiculous.”

“You look beautiful.”

She arched an eyebrow at him. “I didn’t say I look ugly, just that I feel ridiculous.”

Aramis chuckled. “My mistake, mademoiselle.”

“I think you dislocated your shoulder.” Gretel offered.

Aramis glared at her. “You think?”

“I can put it back in place if you want. I’m used to doing it.”

Aramis sighed. “I fell down a roof because of a witch.” He groaned. “I can’t believe this is my life.”

She sat next to him. “Welcome to mine.”

“Is it always like this?”

“No. Sometimes it’s much worse. Sometimes when we find the witches they already caused a lot of damage to good people. Sometimes when we get to a place they’d already burned an innocent woman.”

Aramis lowered his gaze. “How is it possible we never knew about any of this?”

“It’s… Complicated. Most witches don’t come to big cities like here; this is really uncommon. And people don’t want to know, not really.”

She was probably right. Thinking that they were safe from these things -vampires, witches, monsters in the night -because their faith, or the soldiers of the King could protect them was better.

Better than knowing that few people could actually protect them from those.

“Will you…” Aramis cleared his throat. “Will you put my arm back in place?”

“Sure.” She stood up and grabbed a hold of him. “I’ll count to three, alright?”

“Yes, that’s… OUCH!”

Gretel sighed. “I should go.”

Aramis gave her a look. “Why?”

“Do you really need to ask?” She asked dryly.

He chuckled. “I have self-control.”

“Normally, so do I.”

He hummed, a grin growing on his lips. “So this isn’t ‘normally’?”

Gretel snorted. “No.”

Aramis was quiet for a long time and Gretel thought he’d seen that she was right. “You can go if you really want to.” He finally said.

“But?” She prompted.

“But I’d like it if you stayed and we tested that self-control.”

Gretel groaned as she noticed her shoulder was out of its socket. “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.”

“Language, mademoiselle.” Aramis admonished from his place on the ground.

“Shut up, father.” She growled. “I don’t have the time or the patience to deal with you right now.”

He arched an eyebrow at her. “Someone is feeling grumpy.”

Her glare was venomous. “Someone is about to lose teeth.”

“Don’t start the bonfire yet, okay?”

Aramis gave her an unamused look. “You really don’t trust me, do you?”

“Why should I?” Gretel asked. “I don’t know you.”

“I want to help.” He insisted.

“The only thing the church never does is help.”

“I’m not a priest.” He indicated.

“Only when it’s convenient.” She snorted. “And that’s bold of you to say with a cross that big hanging from your neck.”

He grabbed said cross. “It is… Complicated.”

“It always is with you people.”

He arched an eyebrow at her. “‘You people’ as in the church, or as in the French?”

She grinned. “You can guess.”

Gretel’s breath wooshed out of her when she fell on the bed. “Good to know our self control lasted less than an hour.” She told Aramis as he pulled off his shirt.

“Are you complaining?” He asked, seriously curious.

“Lose the cross and I won’t.”

Aramis grinned at her, but put the cross away as she tried to wiggle out of her very tight pants.

She’d barely managed to free her legs, before he was lowering his body on top of hers. “I need a minute here.” She told him.

He cupped her face, dropped a kiss just below her left eye. “Slow down. I’m not hurrying this.”

“Why?”

“We’ve danced around this for a long time.” He indicated. “I want to savor you.”

Gretel rolled her eyes. “You French and savoring stuff…”

So I’m trying to figure out my plans for this weekend, and they are glorious and big.

Problem is: since it’s a loooong weekend because of Carnival, people keep inviting me to do stuff. I wanna stay home and write T.T
