Dealing with jealousy in RP

This is one of those sticky situations that seems to come up a lot, but no one really wants to talk about.

Let's go over some things that may be causing the issue, and some solutions to try.

Issue number one: Reply imbalance. The situation? You're RPing with someone, who, of course, has other RP partners, and your partner is replying to everyone else's threads well before yours. Sometimes several times over. It can leave you wondering whether there's an issue with your writing; or maybe feeling like that person is just RPing with you out of a sense of obligation and maybe now they're regretting it.

This can be painful and frustrating. Before you let it get to too far, take a step back and take a few deep breaths.

The most important thing you need to remember is to NOT act on these feelings. Don't lash out or get angry. You will only hurt yourself in the long run.

I promise you, literally everyone experiences these feelings. They're just part of being human. It's okay, and it's okay to deal with them in a constructive manner. Take a walk, take a break from the forum/server, watch some movies or read a book or play a video game.

Also, in case you're wondering, it's absolutely okay to sit down and have a good cry about it. Maybe write in a journal or make some art.

Another thing to do is to to branch out, expand your horizons. Join other forums/servers, or start RPs with other people where you're at so that you aren't left sitting on your hands.

And try not to worry about whether a writing partner likes your writing. If you've been writing creatively for any length of time, you understand that sometimes, muse can be fickle. Sometimes, a certain plot can fire up the writing juices, and you just have to run with it, or, for whatever reason, a certain character dynamic grabs your focus and won't let go. And sometimes, you're just not feeling it, and trying to force a reply when muse is uncooperative is often like being pecked to death by ducks.

I don't say this flippantly, but don't take it personally. 99.9% of the time, it's not about you.

Issue number 2: Other characters being liked better/more sought after than yours.

We've all been there. Just hanging out in the server/forum, and someone talks about creating a new character, and before any details are known, people are jumping on the character, debating who will get to ship with them. Or a player leaves, for whatever reason, dropping ships on their way out, and again, there's a debate for who's going to pick up those characters. Meanwhile, maybe it seems like your characters are ignored, left to be on their own, pushed to the side when the "popular" characters come in.

It happens to everyone, I promise.

And again, take a step back, take a deep breath, and don't lash out, even when you're frustrated. I am part of the modmin teams for several Discord servers, and we've had people who have complained about it, and all it does is make everyone uncomfortable.

Not to mention, I promise that when you lash out like that, it's a huge turn-off for potential writing partners.

When you get right down to it, RP is a hobby, not a job. Every individual player has the right to choose which characters they play with, or don't. It isn't your right to harass or berate or browbeat them, to force them play with you or pay attention to you.

This is a game. Play with kindness.

For the past few days I've have learned so much about myself, I've learned that I am not good in large groups of people that I do not know, I also realize how jealous I am of a person.

This sometimes trigger me because of my past relationship, my past relationship that I was just in they were kind of the same, they love making friends with people but these things trigger me because of that. I believe that I am jealous because of situations that I've been in recently where my trust has gone out the window, I would give this person my full trust knowing the type of person that they were AND that is my fault 100%. I do also believe that things that I have put myself through is why I am the way I am with my newest relationship. I definitely think I need therapy or something that will help me not be disconnect

I do enjoy keeping this journal to write down my thoughts, so that way I can reflect on them. I know I haven't written in this for quite some time because I have been busy with work and not really feeling the need to write my feelings down. But this whole trip has made me realize a lot. My boyfriend deserves much more than what I am giving him at this point in time. He doesn't deserve me being the way I am towards him because of my past relationship. I'm trying to change because he's a good person and I don't want to lose him for anything. So with that being said I'm going to look into getting help or talking to people on how to change. I love him and I love myself and if I want this to work I need to better myself.

Charlie was sitting anxiously as screams filled her ears as she waited with her family for her baby sibling to finally be born. Her knee kept bouncing up and down as she would occasionally glance down the hallway to the room where her father and Adam were being held. His screaming filled the entire hospital, no scratch that his screams probably echoed all across the sloth ring where they were. When she said her family, she meant the family that could cross rings. All her aunts and uncles, the sins, were here and of course Vaggie was by her side as she rarely leaves it.

They were all excited over the new heir of Hell finally making an entrance. Her Aunt Bee and Uncle Ozzie were currently trying to make small talk over the screaming along with other random noises in a busy hospital. her uncles Leviathan, Mammon, and Satan were playing cards. Her Aunt Bel was with her medical team in Adam's room doing her best to deliver the baby safely. Obviously, the sin of pride was right by Adam's side comforting and holding his hand as his new child was being brought into their world.

Charlie slightly grimaced at the thought.

Charlie internally: more like sudden child, their announcement literally came right after the honeymoon

Suddenly the screams came to a stop. Her whole family, including herself, went completely silent. After a few moments the screams of an infant were replaced and cheers erupted from the sins. Charlie only winced at the screaming coming from her aunt and uncles, as well as that baby.

Charlie internally: That thing sure does have a pair of lungs

Aunt Bel came out to the lobby, her scrubs having some blood on them. Her dad was not far behind, wearing similar scrubs to his sister. He had a ginormous smile on his face which had grown bigger when his eyes landed on his now eldest.

Lucifer: Char Char! You want to meet your new little brother?

Lucifer took Charlie and they headed into the delivery room where Adam laid on the bed looking absolutely exhausted with sweat pouring down his head. Yet he still had the sweetest and gentlest of smiles on his face as he stared down at the creature in his arms. Her father pushed her forward slightly and she was standing by Adam. Adam slightly looked up to her and spoke in a raspy voice, throat no doubt

Adam: Hey Girly there’s someone your father and I want you to meet

He lowered the blanket where a stark white face that was slightly scrunching up. The newborns eyes were closed

Adam: Charlie this is Mallum your new baby brother

Lucifer: well little lady, what do you think of this little man?

Charlie took a good hard thought about it as she stared down at Mallum and all she could feel was deep resentment

I can’t stop thinking about Remus representing jealousy and envy, in the same way Roman isn’t just creativity, he’s also ego, pride, and passion. It always felt a little lopsided to me that they were halves a whole, and yet Roman has all this extra stuff. But what if Remus has some extra stuff of his own, things that mirror Roman’s extra stuff. 

Consider the feeling you get when you work very hard on something creative, something you’re proud of, only for your work to be passed over for someone else. Consider the envy you might feel when someone else succeeds in the same area you wish you could. Even when it’s a friend, someone you care about, that feeling creeps up sometimes. Don’t you deserve the recognition just as much as they do, if not more? Or maybe, they made something better than you, and you wish it was yours. Either way, that’s envy. Wanting something someone else has. 

Alternatively, consider jealousy, in a romantic sense. The moments when your partner seems to click with someone else, or someone flirts with them, or they’re just plain spending more time with other people than you. It happens, it’s normal. But you can’t help that niggling sense of jealousy in the back of your mind, fueled by insecurity and fear of losing the one you love, that some might take what’s yours away from you. Maybe you imagine in great detail what they’re doing right now, or any number of scenarios in which they leave you or cheat on you. You know you’re being irrational, but even so it’s hard to put those thoughts to rest. 

In both cases, these aren’t wanted feelings, but they’re there anyway, a lot like intrusive thoughts (and in fact in some situations they can be a form of intrusive thought!), and they’re also both extensions of things that Roman represents. Envy and jealousy are both forms of desire tempered with ego and insecurity.

So, where Roman is pride in your work, and desire and passion for your partner, and Remus is wondering why someone else got rewarded for their work and you didn't, and the fear someone will take away the one you love.

In other words, Remus makes you green with envy.
