"I feel like the show has lost its "grit" since about season 14. There was so much grit in the first 14 seasons; hard truths about ranching, rodeo, people engaged in serious illegal stuff. And a lot of really strong character moments, and well-written dialogue. Amy's grief over Ty was amazingly done. But these past seasons & especially season 17 feels it has lost true emotional depth, proper "grit", and also writing that understands & respects its characters. Have the showrunners gotten old & forgotten how young people talk? Have they forgotten that the best emotional moments are not necessarily overly demonstrative & with very pointed, forced dialogue? Having rewatched from season 1, I feel extremely coddled by S17 and honestly feel like quitting given the nosedive in writing quality. Which is really sad because Heartland had been going amazingly strong all these years. I feel like the only way to save the show now would be to stop the current story, and start fresh with aged up Lyndy and maybe grandma!Amy, and just tell a totally new story with new characters."

Diary of a Junebug
Mastering the art of trying our best and not taking things too personally
Glossy ivory shells have been showing up at the beach and that means it’s time for another crafting event. Joining us at the camp are Kati, Millie, and Alexi, so along with making a bunch of cool stuff, we also did some pottery and had a lot of ice cream.
For most of the day, we spent it at the beach collecting shells. Too bad it’s not warm enough to go swimming yet, that would’ve been a lot of fun. At least we can set up a bonfire in the evening and hang out for a bit before it gets too cold. Besides, we’ve been doing such a good job at finding shells that I think we got most of them within a couple hours. That means more time for us to chill and do other fun stuff.
Today was a bit different as we finished things early in order to go to Milkcloud for a charity stream event that Kati and Alexi were part of. It’s one of those casual gaming things where they mostly hang out while doing challenges involving fighting bosses. Various challenges include using a randomizer to pick their team, completing a fight under a certain amount of time - it’s funny to see what comes up.
The whole thing looked like a lot of fun but I would definitely fail considering that a) I don’t think I have beaten a boss under a minute - but I have come close! - and b) some of these challenges are crazy hard so I’d be super screwed like if I had use use a character that’s not fully built or I suck at playing. Also there’s some exceptions to the timed challenges as some of the bosses aren’t actually that hard but they’re really annoying because they do things like hide so you spend half the time waiting for them to stop so you can finish them off.
Along with Kati and Alexi, other participants include Aymn, Cheyenne, Estella, Ying, Lyndi, and Atsushi. It was a lot of fun watching them play and hang out together. From what I’m hearing, the event went really well and everyone wants to get together to do it again. I’d totally be down for that!
The charity stream’s for raising awareness on mental health issues, so all proceeds will go to charity. So naturally a lot of the conversations went towards mental health, though they did go off on a tangent that’s sorta connected to the main topic, but also a bit about their personal lives. Other topics such as disability and trust issues came up since those are intertwined with mental health, especially with the stigmas that surround those topics. It was very interesting to listen to so of course I had to get as many of my thoughts down before I forget.
First of all, the participants here struggle with some sort of mental health issue and/or disability or chronic illness. Some people in their lives - family and such - are accepting while others are not so much. Kati has depression, anxiety, and lupus. Alexi is an amputee thanks to a drunk classmate, and on top of that she struggles with PTSD, anger issues, and depression. Cheyenne has anxiety, depression, ADHD, and a bunch of health issues. Estella calls herself a basketcase - she’s autistic with anxiety and BPD as well as a former drug addict. Lyndi and Ying have ADHD, both have the inattentive type and went undiagnosed for a long time. Aymn is autistic with OCD and chronic health issues. Atsushi has ADHD and PTSD, the former also wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood and he was told - in a nice way by the doctor - that he has one of the worst cases they ever saw.
And of course, each one went through various struggles of acceptance. Cheyenne considers herself lucky that she has a good support system, especially since her grandma works with kids who have developmental disabilities. Lyndi, Ying, and Atsushi weren’t diagnosed with ADHD until adulthood, so they spent most of their lives struggling without understanding why.
Lyndi was lucky that her family was supportive too, though she said Ludwig kinda blamed himself for not noticing the signs earlier as he too is neurodivergent. In her case, she said the diagnosis didn’t really change too much aside from making certain aspects of her life easier. Also, in retrospect, she realized that it explained her “unusual” ways of coping with traumatic events like her uncle’s death and estranged mother’s reappearance.
Atsushi said he was considered hyperactive throughout his childhood, which was part of the reason why most of the adults saw him as a problem child. Of course, there were other reasons why he was ostracized by the village he grew up in, but that certainly contributed to it. As a result he grew up aware that something was “wrong” with him, so in a way he kinda overcompensated, and while some good came out of it, he now questions whether it was necessary. Sure he was glad to be a hero, but why should that be the way to make the village acknowledge him as a person? Yeah, I see his point.
For him, his diagnosis was a game changer. Suddenly it all clicked for him and everything was less confusing and scary. Also, it turns out that his mom had undiagnosed ADHD too and she came to the same realization. To think you spent most of your life feeling inadequate or stupid and thinking that it’s just you. And then you find out that there’s a reason why it seems like you’re lagging behind and it’s not your fault and you’re not alone. You’ll still have your struggles but now you know that there’s a reason why and what you can do about it.
Ying says it was similar for her in terms of her diagnosis - relief at knowing that there’s an explanation for why her brain works differently. However in her case, her family wasn’t as accepting. She described her folks as old fashioned, which is also why they don’t approve of her being a musician. Her mom eventually came around and even stood to her defense against some relatives who began treating her differently.
Sometimes people are just like that, once they realize something’s “wrong” or “different” about you, you’re suddenly no longer a person in their eyes. I don’t understand it but that’s just the way some people are, I guess. And they wonder why so many of us have trust issues…
On the other end of the acceptance spectrum, Alexi, Aymn, and Estella have their problems - most which take way too long to unpack so they gave us (the audience) a tl:dr version. In short, not very happy, but at least they’re at a point where they won’t let others drag them down and stop them from living their lives.
Aymn is pretty much cut off from his family for various reasons, being autistic and chronically ill being one of them. He is not exaggerating or oversimplifying by saying that those are two of the many reasons why his parents resent him. There’s also the fact that they’re ultra conservative - dangerously so because they’re powerful politicians - as well as emotionally abusive. He said when his parents tried to get him into politics they didn’t expect him to end up on the opposite spectrum.
For pretty much all his life, Aymn was told by his parents that he was worthless and that no one will ever give him a chance. They pretty much put it in his head that the only way to truly be accepted is through cruelty. In other words, inflict pain on others so they will notice you and then bleed them dry because that’s the only way you can survive. Hard to believe that someone like him grew up with those kinds of people. It’s a good thing he’s a strong willed, compassionate, and stubborn person with an innate sense of justice.
By chance he met people like Sadiki, Safiyya, and Nahla, and they were the ones who prevented him from sharing his family’s toxic views on the world. Over the years he went from some nobody to Safiyya’s right hand man, something that made his parents resent him even more. Though Aymn never aimed for power, the fact that he ended up being the second most influential person in the Lunar Rainforest was the perfect fuck you to those who kept putting him down. Good for him!
Alexi had her issues regarding harassment from that classmate who caused the accident. At school she faced ableism and ostracism from her peers and family to an extent. On top of that, the classmate and his friends kept harassing her on and off for years before he died. It was rough and certain people in her life didn’t make it any easier.
She spent a good part of her life being angry - rightfully so - only to be brushed off and told to get over it. Funny enough, when she brings up the harassment, they somehow make it out to be her fault, as if the fact that she’s here serves as a constant reminder of what happened. Even now, there’s still some people who try to gaslight her into thinking she should take sole responsibility. Talk about victim blaming.
The more I hear about Alexi’s story, the worse it gets. She said if it wasn’t for her mom, she’d hate to think how she would’ve turned out. I don’t blame her for being angry - she was basically fucked over by some rich kid who got off scot free while she got turned into a scapegoat. She didn’t even want to get in that car with him but he forced her while the other kids didn’t step in. He somehow got off with minor injuries while Alexi almost died because help didn’t arrive until nearly an hour later. She was later told that had she been taken to the hospital earlier, they would’ve been able to save her leg.
In response to people telling her to get over it, she says hell fucking no. I agree with her. Even though she’s living her life, doing her own thing, there’s still a part of her that’s scarred forever. That’s not to say that she’s clinging to her past - she’s long come to terms with her disability and what happened - but the harassment and bullying and gaslighting she faced kept holding her back. She said that she was once the easygoing, docile, super eager people pleaser before the accident. To a degree she still is, but now with anger issues as she’s prone to lashing out - again, can’t blame her - and suddenly she’s disagreeable and violent. I swear, sometimes you just can’t win with some people.
Estella has also dealt with some shit that she will never get over thanks to certain people from her past. In short, she had an unhappy childhood being raised by unloving adoptive parents. As a teen she started shoplifting and abusing prescription meds and that eventually got her into a lot of trouble. She considers herself lucky that instead of throwing her into some juvie and locking her away, the guy who arrested her insisted that she undergo counseling and rehabilitation. While her family disowned her, that officer never gave up on her, and she’s forever grateful to him.
Obviously it wasn’t easy and she had a lot more bad days than good. Just when Estella was trying to build a new life for herself, she put too much trust into the wrong people, and that’s how word about her arrest record came out. It’s one of those things where she’s kinda glad it came out as it kinda forced her to confront these problems, but there could’ve been another way. As a result her ex family found her and harassed her from time to time. In their eyes, she was irredeemable and deserved to die in a ditch - not an exaggeration - and she’d be lying if she said that still didn’t strike a nerve with her.
I think the worst part is that no matter how we try to live our lives, there’s always someone who tried to bring us down. They criticize what we do, saying that we’re doing everything wrong, and they try to convince us that we’re not good enough. There’s no use winning with them because no matter what you do, they’ll try to find something to be mad about.
Maybe that’s why I keep a lot to myself. After all, they can’t hurt me if they don’t know what’s going on in my head.
I’m all for letting people live their lives as long as it’s not harmful and such. I’m not one to tell you how to run your life because you do things differently from me. I don’t understand why that’s so hard for some people to grasp.
Ying has said that even though she’s doing well as an artist, there’s still people around her who question her success. It’s fine if what she’s doing isn’t their thing but it is kinda insulting when they act surprised that people actually like her for who she is and what she does. I remember Mae’s response to Daisy Jane’s shop taking off - making a rude remark about mentally ill gays - something she later tried of write off as a joke . It was never funny to begin with.
I don’t know, I can’t imagine doubting someone so much that when they end up succeeding, I accuse them of cheating or insult those who support them. It’s like they don’t want you to succeed so when you do, they take it as a personal insult.
Kati had her detractors from acquaintances when she decided to sell her ceramics. They told her stuff like she’s not good enough or it’s not feasible or she won’t be able to manage it. She recalled that some of those people suddenly changed their minds when her shop started taking off, claiming that they always supported her from the start. Did they really?
On the plus side, Kati and the others agreed that those kinds of situations are helpful in figuring out who to trust. Some people only care about you when it’s convenient for them so they’re not worth sticking around with.
There’s also the issue of people knowing you IRL thinking they could dictate what you can say or do online, which is annoying. That’s also part of the reason why I hardly update on certain socials, especially ones where older relatives usually are. All the participants have a large online presence and most people outside of that are aware. They’re fine with that, but it does result in some problems, which I think are inevitable.
Atsushi and Ying have dealt with some IRL acquaintances who actively complain about what they put online. As in, they’re uncomfortable with heavy topics like mental health, as well as any kind of negativity. Alexi received complaints from her dad for even bringing up any sort of negativity or slight criticism when she talks about her family - a sentiment shared by Ying, Kati, and even Cheyenne to a degree.
I mean I get shit talking and bashing but from what I’ve seen from them, I don’t think what they’ve said is harmful or hurtful. I mean there’s definitely people who do that, but they’re not the kind. Even if they do slip up, I’m sure they’re quick to apologize.
Most of what can be perceived as negativity isn’t even that bad - like they were careful not to name names and keep it vague. Also they’re just talking about stuff and they’re allowed to vent and complain as long as it doesn’t drag things down too much. Apparently one of the things Alexi’s dad complained about was when she mentioned that her family wasn’t really supportive of some of her life choices - like I’m pretty sure that’s the case for pretty much everyone and she wasn’t being mean or anything. Again, if it was a direct attack that’s different, but that wasn’t what I got from her words as she was mostly speaking in general terms.
They’ve all definitely had their share of people reaching and taking something they said and seeing that as a personal attack. Again, it’s the whole watching and waiting for you to mess up so they can make themselves the victim.
Atsushi mentioned that someone from his old village once made an account just to criticize him during a stream - it was actually kinda pathetic. Cheyenne had an incident with Alon, who somehow thought it was a good idea to bring up her father. I was there when it happened - he basically blamed her for not trying hard enough when they were separated. Like what? First of all, she was 11, what could have she done? Wasn’t he like 5 or 6 at the time - why was that any of his business? Cheyenne wasn’t upset, more like baffled because why the fuck would you bring something like that up? In the middle of a chill gaming stream? All she said was that she was planning to spend the weekend with her father but something came up.
The lengths some people will go to bring others down… There’s some things you can get over, others you can’t, and probably never will. That’s not to say that things won’t get better, but even a fully healed scar leaves something behind. All the participants have been through shit and yet they survived.
I’m glad to hear that they’re all at a point in their lives where almost everything’s good. That’s not say that they don’t have their problems, but they’re better equipped to deal with them now compared to, let’s say, 10 years ago. It’s not always easy but it’s important not to let yourself take too many things to heart, especially if it brings you down.
All in all, it was an interesting conversation to listen to. The participants were a bit unsure at first when things started turning serious but we all wanted them to continue. I’m glad they did as I think it’s important to be open about mental health struggles. I think too many of us struggle alone with our problems, so it helps to know that we are in fact not alone and things will get better. We’re all trying our best here, and that’s what really matters in the end.

Holiday Heritage
There was a lot to appreciate about this one. First off, I loved having a movie that celebrated Kwanzaa. Sure, I wish it would of been a bit more of a teaching movie since I personally don’t know anything about the holiday but it didn’t hinder me from enjoying it any less. Another thing I loved was the family aspect and having Ella play peacemaker between her mom and grandma. I also liked that Mica actually left at the end of the movie. We never see that so it was oddly refreshing. Lastly the balance between the family and the romance flowed really well together. One never felt over powered by the other which is always nice. Casting wise, it was great seeing Lyndie back on the network. She makes a lovely leading lady. Obviously Holly Robinson Peete is a Hallmark staple, especially with holiday movies so it’ always good to see her back. Brooks was great as well. I’m happy to see him back as a leading male and can’t wait to see what’s next for him on the network. I thought the cast as a whole worked really well together. The family bond was great, the romance chemistry between Lyndie and Brooks was really sweet.
Rating: 2 - It was a beautiful movie. I hope Hallmark continues celebrating different holidays and cultures with more movies like this.
What did you think of this movie? What did you like/dislike about it? Feel free to let me know by replying to this post or sending me a message through the inbox!

Review! Heartland Ep. 1207: Running Scared
Super-late with my thoughts on this episode, but better late than never. Tim's prize pupil has been cleared by the docs after her concussion, so she's initially eager to get back bustin' those broncs. Easier said than done. Jade's apparently got a touch of PTSD: she bails the first time she sits on a horse in the chute, blaming a "sore shoulder". Georgie is growing steadily more intent on becoming the top jumper, worthy of Coach Kim's tutelage. Since Ms. Price planted the notion that the only thing standing in Georgie's way of becoming that top jumper is Georgie herself, the kid has taken it to heart. Except that has translated into vigorous workouts and shrinking meal portions devoid of fatty meats. She's also weighing herself on the sly, and always seems disappointed with her results. Side note: it's been my concern since Day 1 that without guidance, Georgie could develop an eating disorder, so hopefully someone in her life notices the unhealthy extremes and intervenes before it's too late. (Jade? Amy? Wyatt? Jack? Lou? Anybody?!)
At dinner, Tim wants to know what's up with the hard-core training Georgie's been doing with Jade as her side-kick; Georgie changes the subject by asking how Jade's doing now that she's cleared by her doctor. Tim admits Jade is all workout and no bronc; says he thinks she's scared. Jack picks up on that and suggests Jade needs to get her confidence back. He thinks an event involving horses might help Jade slowly work her way back up to broncs. Tim agrees it's not a bad idea. Says he's even been thinking of putting on a team penning clinic at the school. Jack reminisces about a team penning event that saw his team of "old timers" best Tim's team. Eli Stark and Will Vernon were on Jack's winning team. (On a somber note: RIP, Donnelly Rhodes, who portrayed Eli.) That leads to a discussion about a little friendly, "family" competition. The team penning idea starts off as just a simple Guys vs. Girls (Tim, Jack & Caleb against Amy, Jade & Georgie), with the losers buying a fancy dinner for the winners. Tim morphs it into a "Fun Family & Friends Day" to be held at Heartland with lots of events for everyone attending. He's even going to sell tickets with the proceeds going to the winning team's charity of choice. He also changes the bet: Losers don't have to buy fancy dinner: they must dig a new hole for the outhouse. The Guys' side seems to have one problem: Rusty the horse. Caleb wants Amy to look at Rusty who isn't performing as expected. When she does, she diagnoses the problem sitting squarely with the rider, not his mount... Caleb's "problem" is revealed later when after a Guys' poker game the night before the Fun Day, he tells Jack how he and Cass are having great difficulty conceiving. Doctors aren't any help, and it's weighing heavily on the couple. Jack reveals that he and Lyndy had similar problems; were told they'd never have kids, but Marion came along (their "miracle baby") when they just relaxed and decided to let life come to them, whatever it might be. At the team penning event, the Girls predictably win (by one second). They raised $2000 with the ticket sales, and Amy suggests they split the winnings so both their charities of choice benefit. Another benefit? Jade feels she's conquered her fears and wants to get back on the broncs again. Final thoughts: Okay, everyone knew that after all the goading and trash-talking that Team Amy was going to beat Team Tim. Because Jade needed the win to get over her issues, right? Disappointing that for the 200th episode of Heartland things couldn't have been more "epic". Ty, Lisa, and Lou were no-shows. There was nothing especially memorable or special about this episode, to be honest, but it wasn't a terrible episode, either. Jack's talk with Caleb was unexpected, but welcome, as it fills in some of Jack's own backstory about why Marion was an only child. That said, sure wish we had learned stuff this like TEN SEASONS ago. (Sheesh.) I mean, I guess it's the sort of normal quiet, canon information the whole family knows (but the viewers aren't privy to) so the Writers don't think it necessary, but it feels like it was conveniently written in for this specific episode and not something that was always on the page. I found Amber Marshall and Chris Potter to be especially great and entertaining as their characters heckle each other over the team penning event. My, how Amy and Tim's father-daughter relationship has grown over the years! One negative: The one-liner about Ty's absence about a camping trip with Luke. Not a "good look", Heartland. I mean, Ty is clearly not a sicko, but a single man who is not the parent or legal guardian with a minor out on a camping trip? Alone? That does not work for me. I hope it is explained that perhaps it was a big foster kids' camping event with other kids and camp counselors and so forth.

"All six people in the Nissan Rogue, which landed upside down, were killed. When interviewed by law enforcement at the scene, Galle, then 17, confirmed he was the driver of the BMW, which had no other occupants, court records state.
On the night of Jan. 27, Galle raced the BMW M5 down a Delray Beach highway, the affidavit states. Then, close to 11 p.m., a Nissan Rogue turned onto the road. Galle’s vehicle allegedly rammed into the back of the Nissan, sending it flying several feet and killing its six occupants. Five of them were pronounced dead at the scene and one at a hospital, court records state.
Authorities identified the victims as Mirlaine Julceus, 45, Remize Michel, 53, Marie Louis, 60, Michel Saint, 77, Filaine Dieu, 46, and Vanice Percina, 29. The six were colleagues exiting the farm where they worked, police said during a news conference.
As Galle was taken to a hospital to be treated for an ankle injury, an officer asked him: “Hey, how fast were you driving?” court records state. He allegedly responded, “above 120.”
...
On Feb. 24, police obtained access to Galle’s Instagram account through a search warrant. Investigators found a video of Galle driving the BMW on I-95 at 182 mph, court records state.
During a court appearance Tuesday, Galle’s attorneys argued that the teenager is suicidal and should be released to his family, WPBF reported.
“Since the night of the accident, Your Honor, he’s had a very difficult time dealing with the tragedy and he’s been seeing a psychiatrist,” defense attorney Liz Parker said.
The victims’ family members also took the stand and described life without their loved ones. Some had young children, WPBF reported. Pero Family Farms, where the six victims worked, set up a fundraising page to help the families.
“This has been a very, very hard situation for my whole family, my sister and I and my daughter,” Marie Louis’s daughter Lyndie said at the court hearing covered by WPBF. “She’s 8. Every time she comes home, she’s been asking, ‘Why can’t grandma come back, Mom?’ My mom was a very loving and devoted woman.”
She added: “I think that the defendant should be in jail and not at home. We can’t see our families now and why should he? This was a very reckless crime and not just for my mom — everybody’s lives. We need justice.”
By the end of the court hearing, the judge agreed to place Galle on house arrest. He must be supervised by his parents, refrain from driving and have no contact with the victims’ families.
On Thursday, a judge ordered Galle to be transported to a hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation before he returns home, court records show."

The Lucky Horseshoes - A Heartland Season 16 AU - Chapter 1
“Momma, it’s not raining !!” Lyndy yelled hopping onto Amy’s bed “we can go for a ride !!”
“How about first we let me get you some breakfast so I can get washed and dressed.”
“Ok !!”
Amy smiled and kissed her head before getting out of bed and finding her robe and slippers. She then put out her hand to feel Lyndy’s fit snuggly into hers.
“Good morning Jessica, dude ranch duty ?” She asked walking in and helping Lyndy hop onto a chair.
“No thank god, I was just having coffee with Lisa, Tim and Jack rode out early this morning. Good morning Lyndy.”
“Good morning Grandma.”
“Rancher’s wives.” Amy said chuckling. “My mom and Grandma Lyndy used to complain about it all the time.”
“Complain about what ?” Lisa asked walking in and stopping near Lyndy to lean over and kiss her head.
“Rancher’s hours.”
“Oh yes, quite the shocker initially.” Lisa agreed “I can feed her Amy, we were just going to have coffee.”
“Then maybe I’ll get ready now, I’m not hungry for breakfast yet.” She answered grabbing a mug of coffee and heading back to her room.
Amy left and heard Lyndy choose cereal for breakfast.
“We’re going for a trail ride.”
“You are ? That’s sounds wonderful sweetheart.” Jessica said.
“Momma said it had to stop raining and it did.”
“It sure did, it’s why Grandpa and GG rode out to the cows early.”
When Amy got back Lisa volunteered to get Lyndy washed and dressed for her ride while Amy ate. She sat down with a yogurt and a banana and took a big sip off her second mug of coffee when she got a text which she checked and involuntarily smiled.
“Hey it’s Finn, just checking in on how Spartan’s doing, I could probably stop by and look today if that’s Ok, no charge.” He wrote followed by a smiling emoji.
Amy thought for a second “It’s been too rainy for anything real yet but I promised my daughter a trail ride when the rain stopped. Leaving in about an hour.”
The response was immediate “Great !! I can definitely be there in an hour just have to trailer my horse, see you soon.”
Amy stared down at her phone and absentmindedly spooned some yogurt in her mouth.
“Something wrong Amy you look surprised.” Jessica asked breaking her concentration.
“Uhm, no, except I’m not sure what just happened.”
“How so ?”
“You remember Finn right ?”
Jessica smiled “From the lumberjack competition, I saw you working with him.”
Amy looked at the smile on Jessica’s face “what ?”
“He’s very good looking and I saw you two.”
“Jessica.”
“It’s Ok Amy, now tell me what you’re confused about.”
Amy thought for a second and called up the conversation on the phone then slid it across the table.
Jessica read it and turned it back.
“And what exactly are you confused about ?”
“Did I invite him on a trail ride with Lyndy ?”
“Lyndy and you, and not quite, but that’s what’s happening.”
Amy took a sip of coffee and then exhaled slowly.
“I, uhm, I don’t know if I’m ready for this Jessica.”
“I think you are Amy, look, I never met Ty but I know how important he was to you and what he meant to you but I’ve never seen you as at ease and happy as when I saw you cheering Finn on in the events and you two together watching his grandfather race,” she paused for a second “and for the few moments after. It’s just a trail ride Amy.”
Amy sighed “and he fixed my horse.”
“I thought he wasn’t from around here.”
“He’s not though he said he was thinking of staying to help out Al, you know keep an eye on him.
Jessica smiled again and leaned closer “Go change into something less ripped.”
Amy looked down “really ?”
“Go on, I’ll clean up” Jessica said shooing her off the stool.
Amy closed the door and shrugged out of her pants and then looking in the mirror shed her blouse as well. After looking again he brushed out and neatened her braids before heading to her armoire. She initially reached for a clean semi new pair of Wranglers and then stopped for a minute and reached under it to one of her pairs of Kime Ranch jeans, she held it up to her hanging blouses, grabbed one and a newer belt and dressed quickly.
Lisa cocked her head and looked at her when she came out but turned for a fresh pot of coffee and sat back down next to Jessica whom she noticed nod at Amy as if giving approval. Amy helped Lyndy with her small chaps and boots and then did her own. After Lyndy chose a baseball cap for herself Amy stared at her hats for second before picking a spotless white straw one off the wall.
“We’ll be back in a couple hours.” She said smiling as Lyndy smiled and waved goodbye.
“Have fun !!” Jessica called out as the screen door opened and then she turned to Lisa with a big smile on her face.
“What ?” Lisa asked returning her smile.
“Nothing at all.” Jessica answered still smiling.
Amy and Lyndy made a quick round of the stalls checking on clients and the other horses, she would let them meadow later on when the ground had absorbed some of the rain from the past few days. Next up was a quick brush down for Harley and Spartan before saddling.
While they worked on Harley with Lyndy on her stool and Amy alongside her Amy asked “Lyndy, do you remember Finn ?”
Lyndy nodded.
“Well, you remember that he made new shoes for Spartan ?”
“I remember.”
“He asked this morning to come and check on how Spartan’s doing so he’s going to come along with us.”
“Ok Momma. Does he have a horse ?”
“Yes he does and he’s bringing it.”
“What’s his horse’s name ?”
“I don’t know sweetie, I guess we’ll just have to ask him when he gets here.”
With Lyndy’s help, brushing down and saddling two horses expanded the time it would take Amy to do it alone by about 30 minutes. Seeing how much Lyndy loved interacting with the horses and their tolerance of her was worth every extra minute. When they were finally able to lead the horses out and tie them off it wasn’t long before a blue truck and trailer turned onto the road and pulled down towards them slowly. Amy signaled him to circle around and pull up next to the fence and then walked over to meet the driver.
She was holding Lyndy who was always a bit shy meeting new people and stepped back as the door opened. She was a bit surprised that he reached in for a cowboy hat which he fitted on before turning.
“Good to see you again Finn.”
“You too Amy and who are you ?” He asked with a broad welcoming smile while bending over to look at Lyndy and then holding out his hand.
“I’m Lyndy.” She answered smiling and then holding out her hand for an exaggerated shake.
“And I’m Finn, it’s good to meet you Lyndy.” He said matching her hand shake.
“What’s your horses name ?”
“His name is Night because as you’ll see, he’s all black.” Finn said moving to the back of the trailer and flipping the latch over.
Amy figured him for almost 16 hands, he was large by quarter horse standards for what was clearly a stock breed and it was evident he was well muscled. He was also a solid shiny black and by any stretch Amy thought Night was a handsome horse with a high forehead and clear thoughtful eyes much like his owner.
He had been trailered already saddled so Finn walked him over to the horses he saw tied off to the round pen and tied Night off as well. Spartan recognized him immediately and Finn walked over to run his hand over the horse’s muzzle and then down his neck across his side and down his legs to his hooves which he checked easily.
“So, what do you think ?” Amy asked watching him move easily around the horse.
“They look great, I take it he hasn’t been favoring any of them ?”
“He seems really comfortable.”
“Then’s let’s get him test rode and see how he does. Lyndy, can I help you up ?”
Lyndy smiled and held her hands up and Finn easily hoisted her onto Harley’s saddle.
“And what’s this handsome guy’s name ?”
“His name is Harley, he’s my horse now. He was my daddy’s horse.”
“Well he certainly looks happy that you’re taking care of him now.”
Lyndy smiled and reached over to pat Harley’s neck “He is.”
Finn smiled and stopped by Amy “here let me give you a leg up.” He said and before she knew it she was rising up and onto Sparta’s back. Finn stepped back and watched Spartan’s reaction for a second before untying Night and hoisting himself up into the saddle and settling.
Jessica stopped at the sink and was looking out the window as once again a smile formed on her face.
“Jess, what are you looking at ?”
“Amy and a young man if you must know.”
“New client, I hadn’t heard.”
“Nope not a client, the farrier who re-shod Spartan.”
“Jess ?” Lisa said walking over and catching a glimpse of the young handsome man fitting a cowboy hat to his head and speaking with a smiling Lyndy. She cocked her head when Amy turned a bit and noted the smile on her face.
“Who is he Jessica, sounds like you know what’s going on.”
“Walk me to the loft and I’ll show you.”
“You’ll show me ?”
“There are pictures that go with this story Lisa.” Jessica said reaching for her jacket and hat.
Once outside a few minutes later they caught a last glimpse of the three horses and their riders heading off past the pond. Finn and Amy were obviously chatting, him to Amy’s right with Amy leading Lyndy close by on her left. The last thing they heard was Amy laughing at something before they disappeared over a rise.
Up in the loft, Lisa settled on the couch while Jessica went to fetch her iPad from the night table next to her bed all the while starting the story.
“So Al Cotter who I understand is somewhat of a legend and Finn’s grandfather is a logger in the traditional sense, he uses horses, Clydesdales I think, to move logs in the forest, you know rather than clear cutting a path with machines. The legend thing comes from competitions where he has a long unbroken string of victories.”
“Jack mentioned something about Al when I got back.”
“Yeah, Jack, I’m not sure what the deal is with those two but regardless.”
Lisa shrugged wondering herself, “go on Jess.”
“Anyway, his horse started acting up a few days before the lumberjack thing and Amy asked to work with the horse and Finn volunteered to stand in for Al while Amy worked the horse.”
“Wait, you said he was a farrier, I thought I knew all the farriers around here.”
“You’re getting ahead of the story Lisa, Finn’s from Saskatchewan just visiting his grandpa.”
“Sorry, go on, I’ll wait.”
“Anyway, apparently Butch, that’s the horse by the way went blind in his left eye and Amy suggested that he be retrained without using side blinders so that he could move his head and get a better field of vision.”
“Which apparently she did.”
“Right, anyway through this whole thing Finn came upon Amy and Spartan and noticed that Spartan was in pain and suggested that maybe he could help by shoeing Spartan with a special set of shoes which apparently worked as well.”
“I’m glad Spartan’s doing better.”
Jessica nodded “so am I, so onto the competition which almost killed Tim but anyway I was with Amy and Lyndy and she cheered Finn on and then was with him while Al raced Butch and then after there was this.” Jessica said showing Lisa a series of photos of Amy and Finn hugging and then a slight hesitation it seems for Finn to step away.
“Look at her Lisa, I haven’t been around that long but that’s a smile I haven’t seen on Amy yet.”
“But he’s from Saskatchewan.”
“He is but Amy mentioned that he told her he was thinking of sticking around for a while, you know, to keep an eye on his grandfather, but I’m thinking it may be something more than that.”
“He’s certainly handsome isn’t he.” Lisa said going through some of the pictures.
“Cute and handsome Lisa, pretty good combination I’d say.”
Lisa nodded. “Well, let’s not make too much of all this, anyway what are your plans today Jess.”
Later on, Lisa was alone in the kitchen when she heard the truck and trailer pull out and looked out the window to see Amy once again hug Finn followed by Lyndy hugging him and then waving as he pulled away.
She had a snack ready for Lyndy when she came in and offered Amy something.
“Can I watch TV momma ?”
“Go ahead sweetheart, take your apple with you, not too long though, one show.”
“Ok Momma.”
Amy sat across from Lisa and graciously accepted the coffee offered.
“New client Amy ?”
“New farrier, he’s nice and really helped Spartan.”
“Do we generally hug our farriers ?”
Amy smiled “stop, we became friends and he’s leaving back to Saskatchewan tomorrow.”
“He’s not from around here ?”
“His grandfather lives in Hudson.”
“So just visiting ?”
Amy smiled “Lisa stop, he’s kind.”
“And ?”
“He’s just going back to pick up some stuff, you know warmer clothes, he wants to spend time with his grandpa, keep and eye on him you know ?”
“Just his grandpa ?”
Amy smiled again “just his grandpa Lisa and if you can throw him some work and let your friends know it would be nice.”
“I’ll do that then, if only to help his grandpa out.”
Amy took a sip but her eyes were smiling as she glanced at Lisa over her the top of her mug.

Heartland 14x01 - Keep Me in Your Heart
So, just because I put off watching this episode for so long, I feel like I know most - if not all of the plot points thanks to my timeline but in any case, here I am - finally sitting down to watch the episode proper. I’m going to try to watch “live” and type as I watch but uhhh lets see how this goes.
Let’s start with the looming plot point - Ty’s passing.
First, i’ll start by saying, by no means do I blame Graham for wanting out. 14 years is a long time to have the same job, and if you don’t have passion for it anymore, it is by far better to leave then give a half ass effort. Did he think that the series would go on for this long? Probably not - nor did I. But if they knew Graham wanted permanently out and not just temporary, I do agree with this route. It allows Amy to move on, explore some new storylines and eliminates the whole absentee father aspect of it all.
A thought: do we think that they filmed this opening scene last year, knowing how the story was going to end? I mean, it is summer here, same clothes and scenery as where last season ended, so it’s entirely possible they filmed this last year. Plus, we know that Graham wasn’t really on set with any other characters this year, so i think there’s a strong case to be made.
The house they were building on the plot of land was abandoned and a lil rusty. A metaphor shall we for how Amy is feeling. I wonder if the house will slowly get built as Amy heals her heart and slowly starts to live life again as the season goes on. So, as Amy slowly recovers and heals, the house will be built, representing a new beginning of some sort. Moving forward but never forgetting the past. (PS i wrote this before i got to the end of the episode so this was just a forethought OOPS)
Seeing Lyndy so carefree probably also mirrors real life - where children have no idea of what really happened or the gravity of the situation. I remember when I was a kid (around 5), at a funeral of my grandpa having the time of my life playing with my cousins, not realizing how serious things were. Of course, in real life, the twins probably had no idea what happened, just that “daddy” wasn’t on set haha.
All the flashbacks just hurt my heart. Seeing circa S5 Ty and Amy (or whatever season that was) at the fishing cabin, Ty and Amy working together to birth the foal & Ty at night with two mugs in hand and how those memories related to current day events was a good reminder that the smallest action/word can trigger a memory. Something as simple as a saw could trigger a memory. I was also reminded of how good the older seasons were and how much the entire cast has changed over the past 14 years - 14 years.
I loved hearing about Grandma Lyndy and Jack’s experience with dealing with his loss. As much as good intentions Tim has, I think Jack is the person to get through to Amy, the one with the one who can relate to her the most with his experience. I feel like we know so much about Grandma Lyndy, but also, so little so hopefully Ty’s death allows for a little more Jack story time.
Of course, just as Tim and Jack think that Amy needs to take on some clients, at the cabin they come across some trapped horses. Perhaps its just the thing to distract her from the event coming up - or the thing to bring up some memories and get her to finally open up. Either way, I loved that Jack was there for her and I love the relationship that they have.
Georgie falling off course during her run because she thought she saw Ty speaks volumes to how much Ty was always there for her during her competitions and the special relationship that they have. I was thinking that Georgie burying herself in school the last year may have been her coping mechanism to deal with the death. She said at the dinner table that she was too busy with school to come back, but it could be that she just couldn’t bear to come home to a place that reminded her so much of him.
The others at the memorial speaking about their memories with Ty, while the flashbacks play in the background was powerful. Ty had an important part to each one. He was Caleb’s best friend, Jack’s surrogate son, Lou’s first dance student, Amy’s best friend/inspiration/husband, Lyndy’s father. Even Tim acknowledged how crazy in love Amy and Ty were (even if it didn’t seem like it in the past few seasons haha). Ty was important to everyone and his loss will be felt throughout the entire season.
But onto other topics, it was nice to see Georgie and Quinn still together, as well as Mitch and Lou... engaged?!?! Plus, we even got a Katie appearance and it was nice to see the two cousins bonding, which has been rare up to this point. And, Quinn grew out is hair (even though I’m totally partial to the short haired Quinn)!
It was nice to hear that Georgie was focused on school and happy. The past few seasons has felt like the same-same for her, the focus on school and horse jumping and trying to juggle it all and the one year time jump allowed Georgie to do just that (without having to show it explicitly) which may not have been the most exciting television. Now that Quinn is her coach, I wonder how this changes their dynamic going forward- if they can get through this season and with him being her coach, then that is just good news.
Lou loving being mayor, or telling herself that she liked it seemed like an Omen for the future that her mayoral duties are about to become a lot more complicated. I look forward to the dynamic that her and Aidan bring to this season.
Also, the Spencer Twins are more vocal than ever and it just plays out so well on television!! They’re so cute
The disadvantage to the one year later jump, is all the things we missed out on. It means we missed out on a lot of events I would have wanted to see such as:
* the start of Quinn and Georgie’s relationship (clearly its serious, they’re still together a year later)
* Mitch proposing to Lou?? Um, details please! I’d like some backstory on this please!
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode - dare I say favourite of the season so far? (ha ha ha). I will miss Ty but can’t wait to see how his passing affects the rest of the season.

Heartland s14 ep 1 take 2
tumblr was supposed to save my previous post to drafts so I could add to it (and did not do it which I did not realise until I looked at my notifications and someone had reblogged it in other words OOPS sorry)
to repeat myself anyone criticising Graham for his decision to leave and the timing of it will be blocked, and I wish Graham himself all the best for his future projects
under a read more because spoilers, a rant with some swearing and lots of rambling so it got long
so first I’m going to go off topic a little bit and rant because this hurt a lot when it happened. Last September I woke up one morning to the news that my favourite character (Bellamy) from the numbers show was shot and killed by my other favourite character (Clarke) for the most stupidest reason ever (she killed Bellamy over a sketchbook which he wanted to give to the bad guys... to protect her daughter... AND THEN SHE JUST BOUNCED AND LEFT THE SKETCHBOOK THAT MIGHT HAVE ENDANGERED HER DAUGHTER ON THE FLOOR NEXT TO THE BAD GUYS THAT WERE STILL LIVING). So i was still dealing with the death of my favourite character and the subsequent dragging through the dirt of both Bellamy he died alone thinking everyone hated him. No one really mourned him, he was all but forgotten except for a few throwaway comments that ‘he was right’. No one felt regret about not believing him. No one spoke up and said they wished he could have been here on the beach at the end. He was erased from the narrative and a minor character who died in S3 and whose story had already been wrapped up overshadowed him (and almost everything else that happened in the already shitty finale*- like seriously all of humanity was forced to join a universal consciousness and you don’t have to know a lot about science fiction to know it is really bad). (and everyone thought he was dead and his gf was ready to go on a killing spree about it for revenge but when they found he was actually dead they all just shrugged it off and said he died the moment he joined the bad guys when they were standing in the presence of another bad guy who was on that side for a lot longer and was only a recent turn coat) and Clarke who was the hero of this show was turned into cause of all of humanities sins and not a hero who tried (and then gets rewarded by being let to stay with her “friends” on a beach unable to bear children because aliens turned up as a master race and killed all of humanity and those that were left were made barren? yes in the last ever episode of a seven season show we got introduced to aliens- honestly putting all I know of season 7 into words like this still makes no sense)
*link to the youtube video The 100 Finale... May We Never Meet Again: Talis the person who made the video went off you know if you are morbidly curious
Bellamy was one of my favourite characters and he was done hella dirty. And Ty was another and he got given multiple love letters in just one episode and probably more to come as season 14 progresses. (I laughed as yesterday a youtuber called Hannah King made a video about the first episode of season 14 and I read the comments one of which saying that Ty was done dirty by the writers and I just??? I was hella tempted to put that rant above this part in a response to that comment good lord)
so onto Ty and Heartland
I watched the entire of season 13 in a day and cried a little when Ty and Amy got shot... and it hurt but was also very cathartic to watch because the worry and care was brought to the forefront like Ty not even realising he was shot and his panic was a very real moment
so when fandom started speculating about Ty’s death my only thought was if he did die he would do it with a complication with the gunshot wound and I was right. But it didn’t hurt as much to think about because I trust the writers even if they have made some missteps in past seasons. However, because of Bell and the faith I had in the writers back then (I trusted the writers until I remembered after the death because main character hater was promoted to head writer) I was also worried because of that.... Heartland is essentially the only ongoing show that I’m still actively watching and not just searching for spoilers.
I rewatched the first episode of season 14 twice (will probably do so again maybe)
Ty’s death was handled well, the blurring of the doctor delivering the news and Amy mentioning that the funeral was a blur (I kind of hope we get a flashback)
So it goes without saying the timing of Graham leaving and Ty dying is hard because of Covid-19 and the loss (all forms like normal routines, lives and you know what i mean I hope) that comes with it.
Because of everything in real life and the real life grief a lot of people have been going through, one of the many parts during the episode that made me tear up and cry a little was Grandpa Jack’s and Amy’s heart to heart in the fishing cabin. It was a very real moment the mentioning of how difficult Grandma Lyndy’s death was for death despite it being expected and how unexpected Ty’s was. And Jack saying “there is no right way to grieve” is possibly the most important part of it as there is no right way, and grief is not linear its not a straight line it will be very hard to deal with for a long while.
“keep me in your heart“ was a very strong start and I can’t wait to see what comes next (I hope at some point we see some old friends and Scott turn up and react to Ty’s death). And I am so glad that the cast and crew are talking about it in videos as a message to fans
in the end Ty was loved completely by the family and he loved them the same. the rest is confetti

Investigations
During the investigation, someone told police that Galle had "registered to drive at extremely high speeds" two weeks earlier and had posted the bold images on Instagram and TikTok, the newspaper reported. Police, who executed a search warrant on his Instagram account, found he had filmed himself driving at 182 mph on Interstate 95 in the same luxurious Beemer. In the comments, the teenager allegedly wrote that "the first person who guesses the MPH will receive 25 Cashapps", referring to the Cash App mobile payment service. "I think the defendant should be in prison and not at home. Can't we see our families now and why should he? It was a very reckless crime and not just for my mother, for the life of the whole world. We need justice. ". , "she added. Julceus' niece, Clerna Marc, told the court that the tragedy had "substantially broken" the family. “Mirlaine left behind a 10-year-old daughter who basically has to grow up without her mother. She just wants justice for this situation, "she said, referring to Julceus' husband. Galle, who made his adult debut on Tuesday, is being held on $ 300,000 bail plus driving ban and house arrest terms, according to WPBF. Read the full article

Heartland Fan Fiction
Story title: ‘Lyndy & Jackson’
Lyndy & Jackson, chapter 1
Chapter title: ‘New love and old’
Amy was writing in her journal in the barn office. It was 8:15 and Ty walked down the stairs. He sat in the oak chair at the side of the desk. I’m ready to go Amy. I’m just finishing an entry on Jasper, Amy said. Ty, he is finally getting it; I worked with him last night & rode him this morning in the round pen. He might be going home at the end of the week, she smiled. That’s awesome!! Replied Ty. Amy, it looks like that journal I gave you is almost full. She ended writing her sentence, closed the journal & came around the desk & jumped in Ty’s lap. She slid her arms around his neck. Well, Dr Borden maybe when you get a spare minute from all the time you spend with the other girl in your life, you can buy me another journal. She rolled her eyes at him. So, what girl is that, Ty asked. Well, I’ve heard rumors her name is Lyndy Borden. Oh, you have?? Ty replied. Amy continued; Yes, and my sources tell me she adores you!! She has even been spotted smiling at you, and sitting on your lap. Ty smiled & kissed Amy’s cheek. Ok, you caught us & but you need to know, she is just as stunningly beautiful as her mother, Ty replied. Amy smiled & giggled, Ty kissed Amy on the forehead and nose.
Are you ready to go, Sweetie, Ty asked. Almost, Amy replied, I have 3 quick things to do. Number one involves you, as she hugged him tightly, & then snuggled her head into his neck, & giggled a little. Amy, this better not involve you tickling me! Ty replied. He squirmed a little in the chair. I promise to behave Ty; she lowered one hand near his side, and giggled. Amy!!! Ty squirmed again. You know Ty, Amy poked his chest with one finger, and held it there. You have a reputation in this county of being a very strong and tough man who twice now has beat up a certain former boyfriend of mine. Yet, I can tickle you and have you on the floor in seconds. Why is that Ty, Amy grinned.
Ty tried to contain his laughter by glaring at her. Oh, you don’t scare me one little bit, Amy placed her other hand on his ribs. They both burst out laughing!! Hey, we need to keep it down, Jack may wonder what’s going on in here, Ty said. Ok, so I have a serious question for you Ty, Amy continued.
So, Dr Tyler Borden, she looked directly into his eyes, I need to know something quite personal, she paused for a moment, Then asked; do you have any idea how much I love you?? Ty grinned, and said, well, I’ve heard it’s a lot. Oh, you are very, very mistaken Dr Borden; it’s way more than a lot, way more!! Amy replied. She leaned forward and kissed him passionately for ‘way more’ than a few seconds. Ty sighed and looked at Amy, I love you so much Amy!! I cannot imagine my life without you!! He wrapped his arms around her, pulled her tight and kissed her.
Several minutes later, Amy slid off his lap, looked at Ty and just smiled.
She set a hand on his shoulder and continued with her list; number 2, I need to run up and give our little girl a kiss, & say bye to Georgie, and thank her again for baby sitting all day on a Saturday!! Then I need to check on Grandpa. Amy suddenly paused again, bent over & gave Ty a kiss on the cheek. Then she continued. Grandpa has been sitting on the front porch for almost an hour and just staring down the road. Well, Ty replied, I had a cup of coffee with him this morning @ 6:00 & he seemed fine.
Ty, Grandpa can act all stoic, even when he’s sad. You know, Amy continued, today might be his wedding anniversary with Grandma Lindy. I’ll talk to him Ty. Ok, Ty replied. I’ve got a few quick client calls to make, I’ll be in the truck.
Amy ran upstairs, & gave Lyndy a big kiss, and said good by to Georgie. 5 minutes later she sat down on the bench & gave her Grandpa Jack a big hug. Good morning Amy, Jack smiled & was always happy to see her. How’s Lyndy this morning, he asked. Oh, she’s in heaven Grandpa. Georgie stopped at the library yesterday & checked out 6 children’s books to read to her. Their reading Thomas & Friends right now, then they are coming over to have apple juice & a cookie with you. That’s great Amy!! Jack replied with a big smile.
Grandpa, are you ok this morning?? Amy asked. Jack took a deep breath, I’m fine Amy, thank-you for asking!!! Isn’t your wedding anniversary with Grandma Lyndy coming up, Amy asked him. Jack was quiet for a minute, smiled and in a slight emotional voice, said: its today Amy. Amy slid right next to her Grandpa & slipped her hand into his. My favorite memory of Grandma is whenever I was sick with a fever & was not feeling well, she would pick me up and rock me in the old green rocking chair. Amy looked off into the distance and continued. Grandma Lyndy would sing me little songs about chipmunks and tell me stories of flying squirrels, and butterflies until I fell asleep. I named one of her butterflies Miss Pinky, Amy said with a laugh. I miss Grandma. I do too honey, I do too. Jack smiled & put his arm around his granddaughter.
That was Lyndy; Jack said; always taking care of her family.
Will you spend some time with her today Grandpa? Yes, I’ll go visit her grave, she loved yellow flowers, with a few blue ones. I’ll take her some. This morning I was remembering some of the things that happened the year your mother was born. Bill and Marv and their wives brought us dinners for a week after your mom was born. Bill & Marv were your best friends, & you grew up together right, asked Amy. Yeah, we did & Lyndy liked them a lot.
Amy, Ty said you were both going to the Millar Ranch today. Yes, all day Grandpa. Mr Millar has over 100 horses & Ty needs to check some, and there are a few they want me to evaluate. I guess his ranch is over 5000 acres.
About 5 years ago, a bad blizzard hit, I slid off the road up by County road 22 and Sleepy Creek Road, Jack said. Jim Millar came driving by & helped me for over 2 hours get the old Chevy back on her feet, it was bitter cold Amy. I’m sure his wife Millie was upset he was late for dinner. Ty said Mr Millar is a very nice man, replied Amy. That’s a huge under statement Amy. There’s no finer man than Jim Millar. Will you tell Jim I said hi, asked Jack. I will Grandpa, replied Amy.
Grandpa, when we get home around 5;00, I’ll bake your favorite applesauce cake to celebrate your & Grandma’s anniversary tonight. Jack squeezed Amy’s hand & said; I love you honey. I love you too Grandpa. Amy stood up to go and gave her grandfather a kiss on the cheek. As she walked to Ty’s truck, Jack called her name. Amy turned & said yes Grandpa? Amy, have you told Ty you love him today?? Jack asked. Yes I did Grandpa & he has no doubt about my love for him. Grandpa smiled & said; you and Ty have a good day!’
Amy walked past their new pick up with the car seat in back. She opened the drivers door of Ty’s old truck, slid in and turned the key. Ty sat next her & was discussing treatment options with a elderly client named Freda Tinsley. Amy eased the old truck into reverse, swung around & took off down the driveway. Ty & Jack waved to each other. Freda’s dog Pal was an elderly German Shepherd who was in the last few months of his life. Amy & Ty would stop by Freda’s house on their way home later today. Freda always enjoyed their visits. Amy would massage Pal’s tired muscles, while Ty always listened to his heart. Then Amy, Ty, and Pal would sit around the kitchen table and listen for a few minutes as Freda told stories of long ago in the town of Hudson.
Jack watched as the old GMC drove out of sight, he got up from the porch bench, walked in the house, & picked up the little vase of flowers on the kitchen table. He opened a drawer in the desk and pulled out a set of keys to the old truck Lyndy gave him many years ago. 2 days ago Jack carefully vacuumed and washed it, getting it all ready for his drive up to the cemetery today.
To be continued.

Diary of a Junebug
Gelato night!
It’s about time the Kayode triplets came for a visit! And the timing couldn’t be any better as tonight is gelato night! Thanks to Bunnie, Rex, and Cube, we managed to get Gelato Sundaes to host this fun event! Since it’s super popular (and super good!) we have to make plans at least eight months in advance. But in the end it was worth it because not only we got to eat a lot of gelato but kick back and have fun chilling with friends.
The triplets really needed something like this. Especially now that their mom has been back in the picture for almost a year now. It’s a bit of a long and complicated story so let me backtrack a bit.
A long time ago Ortensia Kayode disappeared into the Netherworld after managing to dismantle a powerful and destructive called the Silent Spear. She left behind three one year old daughters, who were raised by Great-Grandma Essie, Uncle Clarence (Ortensia’s brother), and Uncle Ludwig (Ortensia and Clarence’s uncle). Ludwig and Clarence spent the next twelve years trying to get Ortensia back without reactivating the weapon.
In the process of freeing Ortensia, Clarence was now trapped into the Netherworld as there has to be someone to prevent the destruction from escaping. For whatever reason Clarence jumped right in without a second thought and took his sister place despite everyone’s protests. Ortensia was dead set on returning to the Netherworld because she knew what to expect while her brother didn’t. Eventually her worst fear came true and Clarence was possessed and corrupted by the Spear.
A lengthy battle followed as the Kayodes tried to get Clarence back. During all that time Ortensia was focused on the Spear. It didn’t seem to register to her that she was back among the living with her now half grown daughters. The triplets didn’t - and still don’t - know exactly how they feel about their mother. The battle ended in tragedy when Ortensia was forced to kill a fully possessed and corrupted Clarence in order to seal the Silent Spear and prevent it from ever getting disturbed. It was a last resort that no one wanted to do, but by then they were cornered and had no other choice. I can’t blame the triplets for being forever scarred by watching helplessly while their mother impaled their uncle.
Since then the triplets have rarely seen their mother until last year when she moved in with Essie. Even then she’s still a stranger to them.
Contempt is the first thing that crosses Jenny’s mind when she thinks about her mother. As the oldest, she takes pride in being the responsible triplet. She was always mature for her age - no surprise considering her upbringing - and she has the tendency to put others before herself. Out of the three, it’s hard to really tell how she’s dealing with all of this aside from what she’s saying. Right now she’s keeping her distance but sooner or later she’ll have to fully confront her feelings.
For Jenny's sake, I hope it’s sooner.
Clarry tends to flip flop the most. She was the one who finally convinced Ludwig and Clarence to tell the truth about her mother’s disappearance. She told me that at first she was kind of excited to finally see her mother after hearing all kinds of awesome stories about her. But as time went on, she realized that her mother wasn’t the same person anymore. Now she doesn’t know what to think of her. But she’s hoping that things will change soon now that her mother’s around more.
A part of me hopes, for Clarry’s sake, that this is a sign that things will improve for the family.
Lyndi is furious, a quiet rage that has been building up for years. The last thing she wants to do is talk about her mother. Out of the three, she’s been having the most difficult time. To her, their mother just straight up abandoned them (which she kind of did, let’s be honest) and when she did return, she went back to her old ways, taking on high risk escapades around the world. To her, it’s already bad enough to know that she and her sisters were unexpected but for her mother to confirm it made things worse. And now that her mother expects the family to act like things are normal just adds to the frustration.
For Lyndi’s (and everyone else’s sake), the family better not hold back when it comes to an inevitable confrontation.
Like I said, the timing couldn’t have been better as the triplets really needed that gelato break. After getting that out of the way we talked about other things like Jenny’s latest client, Clarry’s new album, and Lyndi’s business. They’re all sophomores at Hollywood U, which is pretty hard to get into, but it’s a very good university and they’re doing well.
At some point we had a gelato sundae contest and I don’t remember who won but they were all pretty good! There were so many flavors to try out, over half which I’ve never heard of! It feels like we’re in a cute little cafe, which was what we were aiming for.
I look forward to another gelato night and hanging out with the triplets again!

Knitting and crocheting is not just for grandma says Dani Thomas, a junior majoring in integrated marketing communication at Ole Miss.
Thomas began crocheting in the seventh grade when her mom walked in from work one night and started teaching her. Since then, Thomas has made it a nightly routine to crochet her worries away before going to sleep.
She is a busy student, involved in multiple organizations from Ambassadors, to Orientation Leaders, to the Student Activities Association.
“I would say this is my stress relief,” Thomas said. “I kind of like to sit with it. It’s like when I’m watching TV, I obviously have nothing else to do, but I also don’t want to be lazy, so I’m like ‘I have to do something productive while I’m being unproductive.'”
Thomas must make it look like fun, too, because she now has a following within her sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi. She said she is encouraged that college students want to learn about crocheting.
“I just want to keep it going. I think a lot of the arts are dying down, like knitting crocheting and sewing. I feel like it’s kind of my job, because I know how to do this, to teach people how beneficial it can be and how useful it can be.”
Nuts about knitting
As for Long Beach, Mississippi native Sinclair Rishel, she says she’s been hooked on knitting since she was 12 years old. That was more than a decade ago and she has not slowed down since.
Rishel is an Ole Miss graduate and full-time associate editor of the Nautilus Publishing Company, but she also works as a technology consultant at Knit1 Oxford.
“I asked my grandmother, who was an amazing craftswoman, to teach me. She taught me the basic knit and purl stitches, I did three scarves in a row,” Rishel said.
Rishel has since moved onto more complex projects than scarves.
“For a while, I loved doing hats,” Rishel said. “For a long time after that, I was hooked on socks. Right now, I seem to be in a sweater and blanket kind of mood.
Rishel said she has two cardigans and a blanket “on the needles right now” — knitter’s lingo for in the works.
Throughout her busy college years, she managed to achieve some of her most challenging knitting milestones.
She once knitted an Aran fisherman’s sweater for her father, which is comprised of complex patterns.
“I designed and knitted him a sweater in the traditional style, right down to stitches with special symbolic meaning,” Rishel said.
However, she says her projects don’t always go seamlessly. For example, she struggled with her first heirloom style shawl, which is traditionally 6 feet in diameter, but is so finely made it can slip through a woman’s wedding band.
“I’ve always wanted to make an heirloom lace shawl,” Rishel said. “I knew I was going to be spending a lot of time on planes and trains and I’ve never been a person who can just sit still, so I knew I’d need a big knitting project.”
Rishel said around the time she was planning a trip to Europe for a writing class, she bought a skein of lace weight yarn.
“It’s not quite an heirloom, but I am very proud of how it turned out,” Rishel said.
Even though Rishel is a seasoned knitter who champions her own spinning wheel at home, she is no stranger to mishaps with her chunky needles.
“Knitting is full of things that go wrong on an almost constant basis,” Rishel said. “I like to tell people that if their work has a mistake that it’s okay because only God is perfect.”
Rishel she said once wound up with bicolored, enormous and fully-ribbed socks that had to be taken in so they would not fall off of her feet. She still wears them around her home, often when she is knitting.
“Honestly, they’re still some of my favorites,” Rishel said. “They’re so cozy.”
She spends about 75 percent of her free time knitting.
“When I’m getting ready for work, I’ll sometimes find myself with an extra 15 or 20 minutes before I have to leave,” Rishel said. “During that time, I’ll pick up the needles and work a few rows. I knit almost every evening after dinner. During weekends, I can fairly easily wind up knitting at least four or five hours a day.”
Rishel thinks of endless possibilities when it comes to her craft. It is a habit she cannot kick, but she is not complaining.
“If I’m on a road trip where I’m not driving, I’m knitting. If I’m in a coffee house, I’m knitting,” Rishel said. “I used to knit in class in high school and college. If I’m sitting down and my hands are idle, I usually find myself reaching for the needles.”

(Read the PROLOGUE here)
Chapter 1: Calm Before the Storm
"Ready to go?"
Amy looked up at her husband. "All set," she replied, taking in Ty's slim build in a nicely tailored suit.
"You look great, by the way," Ty complimented her, giving her a quick peck on the cheek.
"Thank you," Amy said with a smile, basking in his words of admiration. "You don't look so bad yourself, Dr. Borden."
Ty grinned back. "I'll carry Lyndy down to the house and catch up with you in the truck, okay?"
"Sure."
"Come on, kid," Ty whispered to the sleeping child, "let's get you down to your Grandpa Tim and cousin Katie." He gently lifted Lyndy from the crib, making sure to bring the stuffed rabbit Grandma Lily had given as a gift.
Amy listened to Ty's retreating steps as he descended the loft stairs into the barn below. The late March evening was mild enough that she would not need a heavy winter coat over her evening dress, as Hudson was enjoying a welcome dose of spring-like weather. A minute later, she was outside, opening the passenger-side door to their truck.
A similarly dressed-up Jack and Lisa waved to them across the yard before climbing into Lisa's Porsche. Both couples would be heading into town to attend a celebration hosted by Dr. Scott Cardinal; Lou and Georgie had gone ahead a few hours before. The party was going to be a small one, but Amy figured dressing up felt good for a change.
Ever since Scott hired Cassandra, now married to Ty's best friend Caleb, Amy had regarded the other woman as a threat. First, for Ty's affections—however irrational that fear—then for his job and position as partner at the veterinary clinic. As Ty drove down the familiar track and under the gallows gate, the thought crossed Amy's mind that she could not pinpoint the moment she ceased thinking of Cass as a rival. Somewhere along the way, the two had managed to forge a bond, and tried to carve out time in their busy schedules to socialize. The fact Cass and Caleb were Lyndy's godparents was a testament to that friendship.
"How did Cass react to the news?" Amy asked her husband.
"Like she was on cloud nine," Ty replied with a wide smile. "Practically floated out the door at the end of her shift when Scott told her last week."
"Well, I'm glad for her," said Amy, smiling at the mental image of an ecstatic Cassandra. "Not that I'm complaining, but I've been wondering: how can Scott afford having two partners now?"
"I'm not really supposed to say anything about it yet," Ty said, "but a group of local investors stepped in. They're interested in supporting businesses in Hudson, especially since so many of them had a rough time recovering after the flooding back in 2013... Anyway, somehow Scott's clinic came to their attention. Apart from run-of-the-mill puppy and kitty stuff, you know he's got steady work with the Polo Club."
"Right," Amy said with a slight nod.
"He's Tim's go-to guy at the rodeo school, and Hillhurst picked him for their on-call veterinarian, too," Ty added. "Plus, he's most likely going to be getting that coveted position of resident veterinarian at Spruce Meadows. So, things are looking really good for him and his new investors."
"I'm happy things are working out for him," Amy said. "He's come such a long way from the day Clint brought him to Heartland and Mom sponsored him."
"Yeah, he's worked hard for it," Ty acknowledged. "Personally, I'm humbled to be part of it. He's a great boss."
"Partner," Amy corrected.
"Oh, he still signs the paycheques," Ty chortled. "But you're right. He's a good partner—and boss."
***
Jack noticed Lisa's unusually reticent demeanour on the drive in to Hudson. He guessed it had something to do with the one-year anniversary of the deaths of Lanny and Paige Barick, with whom she had been acquainted. There had been a memorial in Calgary for the couple along with a press conference earlier that day which Lisa attended. Family members gave an impassioned plea for justice and for closure to the whole tragic affair. Business friends and associates that included Lisa pledged a monetary reward in exchange for information leading to an arrest and conviction since all leads had gone cold.
Though a year had gone by, the fact no one had been apprehended in the crime weighed heavily on the hearts and minds of all who knew Lanny and Paige. The case hit even closer to home, as Lou had been questioned by Calgary detectives about her role dealing with Lanny's investment portfolio. There had not been any irregularities Lou could identify from her end, and the law enforcement officers moved on to different avenues of investigation.
Instead of letting Lisa stew in her silence, Jack chose to pay her a compliment as a way of breaking the ice. On more than one occasion he had been compelled to call her out on not confiding in him when she could have used his emotional support.
"If I haven't already said so tonight, you look beautiful," he said, gently rubbing her knee.
This brought a quick smile to her face. She cast a brief, sideways glance in his direction. The sound of his voice and that simple touch had the much-needed effect of lifting her out of her pensive mood. Jack was right: the reminder about Lanny and Paige had upset her more than she was willing to admit. Her mind had been occupied with the way police had initially been tight-lipped about the investigation, and how the rumour mill had churned out all kinds of wild, sordid theories.
"Thank you," she managed to reply, dragging her thoughts back to the present moment. "You don't look so bad yourself, Cowboy." She adored how handsome and dignified he looked in the combination of the suit she had custom-made for him, bolo tie, and pristine white hat. He cut an impressive figure with his height and his build. While he would be considered a senior in terms of chronological age, Jack Bartlett was far from a stereotypical frail and doddering old man. "I know you don't like getting dressed up, but I'm glad you did."
"Well, when my gorgeous wife goes to the trouble of getting dolled-up for a celebration, I guess I have to make sure her husband isn't the goat in the room."
The two of them shared a light laugh at his old, personal self-deprecating description; Jack gave himself a mental pat on the back for managing to lighten Lisa's mood. Now he could be assured they would enjoy the evening without some dark cloud hanging overhead.
"I think it's a fine thing you and those other investors have done for the vet clinic," Jack said, sensing he could now talk freely about any topic. He did not know all the details, but was marginally aware of Lisa's involvement in the group's decision to boost Scott's operating capital.
"Scott has done so much for so many people in Hudson, including Fairfield," Lisa commented. "He was a safe investment; a total no-brainer. And now that he can afford to bring Cassandra on as a partner, I think Ty feels better about his own choice to cut back on his hours there to build his practice with Amy at Heartland. Everybody wins in this one."
Jack was brimming with pride. "You just think of everything, don't you?"
"At least when it comes to the people I love."
***
Maggie's Diner, though by no means high-class in terms of decor or dining fare, was Scott's choice in venue for the small celebration. After all, as he put it, he had "an in" with the owner, and Lou was only too happy to oblige his request.
The guest of honour stood with Caleb; the happy pair were chatting with a few other guests when the Bartlett-Fleming-Borden clan arrived.
"Cassandra, congratulations on making partner at the clinic!" Amy declared upon seeing the other woman, moving in for a friendly hug.
"Thank you!" Cass said, beaming. She accepted the embrace before returning to her husband's side. Caleb mirrored her smile as he snaked his arm around her waist.
At the appropriate time in the evening's festivities, Scott took to the small stage area, palmed the microphone, and began reading from a speech he had prepared.
"I'd like to thank all of you for coming tonight," he started. "I've been so lucky to be able to mentor such a great young veterinarian like Cassandra. I'll say a few words about her, in case some of you don't know. She's not only an excellent veterinary surgeon, but she also specializes in veterinary acupuncture, a procedure you would have had to go to Calgary for if you wanted it—before she started working with me."
Light applause ensued, and Cassandra gave a demure smile at this praise.
"Let's not forget all the crappy graveyard and weekend shifts; all the thankless times she picked up the slack when my other partner took side-trips to Mongolia and B.C. with Vets Without Borders…" Scott continued. "Make no mistake: she's more than paid her dues. It's not always easy running a 'country' vet practice. But having Cass on staff is a fantastic asset, and I wish I could have made her a full partner sooner. Now, thanks to our new private investors, I can finally afford it!"
Scott glanced over at Lisa with a broad smile at that moment. She sent a wink in tacit reply. Few would have known she was attending the party not only as a long-time client and friend, but also as the official representative of the investor's group that made Cassandra's partnership fiscally possible.
"Please put your hands together to congratulate my newest Hudson Veterinary Clinic partner, Dr. Cassandra Fay Odell!"
Cass basked in the adulation.
Someone called "Speech!" which was followed by a few guffaws. But Cass seemed game, so she boldly approached Scott on the small stage. He passed the microphone to her outstretched hand before bringing her in for a hug.
"Thank you, Scott," she said as she looked out among those gathered. "This has been an amazing evening, and I am so proud to be working for such a great mentor and boss. I love my job, and I am thrilled to be accepted into the practice as a full partner."
Polite applause followed these words, but Cass was not finished.
"Scott mentioned his other partner—Dr. Ty Borden. For those of you who don't know, he's the adventurer of our little veterinary trio. He's been to far-flung places with names I can't even pronounce with Vets Without Borders. We started out as pretty fierce competitors, but over the years, Ty and his wife Amy have become close friends with me and my husband, Caleb.
"In fact, we're godparents to their little girl, Lyndy. This is particularly meaningful to me and Caleb, because we've been trying to start a family for a while but haven't really been having much success. Watching Lyndy grow from babyhood into the adorable toddler she is has been a real joy."
Amy and Ty grinned up at Cass, though the rest of the party-goers were starting to wonder where this discussion was leading.
"Now, there's a tiny announcement that needs to be made," Cass continued. "Amy and Ty were a little concerned that this announcement would have stolen my thunder, but I told them it would be a perfect opportunity, since we're here with so many friends and loved ones, so... Amy; Ty, get on up here."
Ty grasped Amy's hand to lead her up towards Cass. Lisa glanced up at Jack as if to ask What's going on? but he seemed equally puzzled; Georgie and Lou likewise shrugged at each other.
"Uh, thanks, Cass," Ty shyly spoke into the mike before passing it to Amy.
"Stay up here, Cass," Amy said to her friend. "Anyway, it's so good to see all of you here tonight; our family members and good friends. It's actually a double-announcement, by the way."
Ty leaned close to the mike and added: "Yeah, Cass talked about our little girl, Lyndy, who's now nearly two years old and growing bigger every day."
"So, the reason we're up here is to tell you all that we are, in fact, going to be having another baby," Amy said, as Ty draped an arm around her shoulders.
Applause filled the diner, with Jack, Lisa, Lou and Georgie staring up at the young couple in happy wonder.
"But like Amy said, it's really a double-announcement," Ty uttered when the clapping petered out. "Caleb, man, you need to get up here."
"Get up there?" a confused Caleb repeated. "Why?"
"Just get up here, you goof," Cass called.
"All right," he said, dazedly walking up to his wife.
Cass took the microphone from Amy while smiling slyly at her husband. "I mentioned before Caleb and I were hoping to start a family," she began to tell the crowd. "Well, it looks like the Bordens and the Odells will have to start planning for a joint baby shower, because I'm pregnant, too!"
"Whoa!" Caleb cawed as a million-watt smile brightened his face. "Babe, so that's why you've been so secretive this week... and I thought it was all about your partnership announcement. But this announcement is even better."
"It is!" Cass replied, matching his smile, and the couple shared a deep kiss, which resulted in more clapping, hooting, and cheering from the crowd.

The Lucky Horseshoes - A Heartland Season 16 AU - Chapter 10
Chapter 10
“Good morning Amy, good morning Lyndy, you’re both up early I see.”
“Good morning Lisa/Grandma.” They said together making Lyndy giggle as she climbed into her seat.
Lisa pushed a mug of coffee in front of Amy before turning to Lyndy “what would you like for breakfast Lyndy ?”
“Bagel and cream cheese please.”
“Half a bagel Lisa, she’ll never finish a whole one.” Amy added getting up and grabbing the milk and the cream cheese for Lyndy and a yogurt for herself from the fridge and half a bagel from the freezer for Lyndy which she handed to Lisa who popped it into the toaster.
“What are your plans for today Amy ?” Lisa said putting cream cheese on the now lightly toasted bagel.
“Early chores, obviously, get Lyndy off to school, shower and meet Cass.”
“Oh, that sounds nice.”
“Clothes shopping, not my strong suit.”
“I hear Cass is pretty good at shopping, sounds like you’re in good company.” Lisa said laughing sitting with her own coffee “what are you shopping for ?”
“Dress and shoes for a dinner date.”
Lisa smiled “Oh Cass is definitely a good choice. Where are you heading ?”
“Chinook and around, lunch first and then shopping.”
“Oh, you’re heading into Calgary. Where’s dinner ?”
“The Lake House, I hear it’s nice.”
“Never been but I do hear it’s lovely. So what’s on the menu ?”
“The works; dress, hose and shoes.”
“Done Momma !!”
“Then let’s get you washed up.”
“How about you get started in the barn and I get Lyndy here ready for school ?”
“You sure ? Lyndy would that be Ok ?”
“I’m sure. Lyndy, how about you ?” Lisa asked.
Lyndy smiled and put her thumb up before hopping off her chair and putting out her hand for Lisa to take.
Amy laughed “Guess that’s a yes, thank you both. I’ll be back to walk her to the bus Lisa, she can read or play in her room once she’s dressed.”
She started early so she was almost done when she took a break back to the house.
“Thanks for doing this Lisa.”
“Really not a problem honey and try to have a good time shopping. Think of the reason for your outing.” She said as Amy helped Lyndy with her backpack.
“The end game, got it.” Amy said heading out the door.
Since most anything is easier to hand off to a valet than a large pickup they decided that Cass would pick up Amy for the ride into Calgary. She had forgotten that Cass had just leased a new BMW SUV and smiled when it pulled down the road to the house. Cass called her for courage to sign the papers even though with the new partnership in the clinic and Caleb’s partnership in the rodeo school she assured Amy that they could afford it and keep saving for a small ranch.
“Nice wheels !!” Amy said opening the passenger side door and leaning over for a quick kiss and hug.
“Thank you, thank you, I like it.”
“And Caleb ?”
“Not so much which is fine.”
“Carson ?”
“He’s more adorable by the day and loves nursery school. Lyndy ?”
“The same really, she loves school and horses. Caleb ?”
“Ok well, before Caleb we’re talking about Finn. Goosebumps ?”
Amy smiled “it’s pretty bad Cass.”
“Doesn’t sound bad to me girl, tell me about Sunday.”
“Pull in for coffee Cass.” Amy said as they passed a sign for an upcoming Tim Horton’s pull off.
“No arguments here.” Cass said as she turned on her turning signal and Amy began her retelling of their Sunday picnic and dinner.
Amy told her about their morning, the long ride up to the river and the picnic. Cass stopped her a few times with questions or comments about the story especially Finn’s interactions with Lyndy.
“Sounds like a pretty idyllic an afternoon if you ask me.”
“It was a really nice day Cass, no complaints.”
“And the dinner ?”
The had made it into Calgary by this point and Cass pulled into the mall and rather than pull up to a valet Amy pointed out a fairly convenient parking spot that was opening up for them to use. The plan was to stop for a bite to eat first so that Amy’s dress could be tried on after eating just in case.
“Trust me Amy, you want the dress to be perfect on a full stomach otherwise you’ll feel fat which you are definitely not.”
“I trust you Cass.”
“As you should, now how was your family with all this ?”
They stopped for dim sum as neither Amy nor Cass were famished and as they ordered, waited and ate Amy continued on with her story. Again, Cass stopped her for more details as the story progressed.
“How was Jack after Finn said that ?”
“I think maybe those that didn’t get it get it now.”
“You’re Ok with what he said though ?”
“He’s not that guy Cass, he follows his heart so yeah I’m fine with him saying it. Basically he just reinforced what I said before anyway, I’m not 15 Cass, I’m all grown up. Now what’s the deal with Caleb ?”
“Caleb and Sam are buddy buddy.”
“What does that mean exactly ?”
“He was hoping you and Sam would give it a shot.”
“You told him right ?”
“I told him but I think he needs to see. It’s Caleb Amy, I love him like crazy but he’s a little slow on the uptake. How do you feel about burgers Saturday night at KO’s, a couples date ?”
“Fine with me, I’ll check with Finn.” Amy said pulling out her phone and texting.
“7:30 is easier with Carson when he answers.”
Her text came as they paid their check and headed into the mall.
“7:30 at KO’s is fine with him.” She said stopping to text something else.
“What ?”
“He’s asking where I am.”
“And ?”
“I’m telling him I’m clothes shopping with you and that I’ll text when I get home. We’ve both been pretty busy this week so maybe there’s a trail ride in my future.”
“Amy Fleming are you actually enjoying yourself ?”
They were walking again and Amy side glanced a smile at Cass and then playfully bumped her with her shoulder as Cass pointed to the first store she was taking Amy in to shop.
Four stores and at least a dozen try ons later Amy had two maybes when they stopped at the gelato stand for a rest and a snack.
“They both looked great on you and neither needed any alterations Amy.”
“Yeah, I liked them both but if I’m going to splurge I’m really looking to love what I’m wearing.”
“So what’s holding you back on either of those ?”
Amy scooped some gelato into her mouth and was quiet while she savored the rich double chocolate cream and chewed a brownie bit, “I think they’re too short, maybe something past the knee for this.”
“You know, I’ve been to the Lake House twice, once was for a wedding so that doesn’t count but once for a business meeting on a regular night and you may be right, especially for a Saturday night dinner and dancing. Let’s change our plan a little, we need to go higher up the chain.”
“Cass.”
“This is your first real date in how long and I mean dressed to go out for dinner and dancing with a handsome guy ?”
“Years.”
“Then we’re splurging meaning, you’re splurging and then shoes. Come on.”
“Cass.”
“Come on Amy or you’ll blow a possible trail ride and you don’t have to buy unless you’re in love with it.”
“Fair enough.” She answered tossing her empty cup and spoon into the bin near the seating area.
It came in the third store they walked into, 11 dresses and an hour later, Ted Baker.
Cass was sitting on a small couch when Amy walked out and in front of a three sided mirror.
“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Cass said standing and walking behind Amy.
“Me too, it’s perfect.”
The dress was navy blue, an embroidered midi dress with a well fitted bodice, an open neckline, tight waist and a tiered skirt with a handkerchief hem. The embroidery was floral with long delicate sleeves and it fit her perfectly. More than that though, the color set off her hair and eyes and she positively glowed in it.
Walking back and forth Cass smiled “well, I think our work here is done.”
“What’s the most you ever spent on a dress ?”
“4300 dollars.”
Amy laughed “not talking about your wedding gown Cass.”
“I don’t know Amy, definitely several hundred. How much is that ?”
“It’s on sale for $385 down from $565.”
“It’s gorgeous Amy and it’s perfect for you and the evening.”
“It’s a lot Cass.”
“You’ll wear it again.”
“Promise ?”
Cass laughed “We’ll make sure of it.”
“Oh man, how do I even justify this.”
“Just think of Finn’s face when he sees you in it.”
Amy sighed and reached down to look at the tag again.
“Hey, stop thinking about it and get changed into your 180 dollar jeans, how many of those you own ?”
“3 pairs but I wear those all the time.”
“Everything is relative Amy. Hold your breath and get your credit card ready, we have more shopping.”
“Ok, shoes.”
“Sheer stockings before shoes, preferably seamed.”
“Will panty hose do ?”
“I take it he won’t be helping you off with that dress ?”
“I don’t think so Cass, we’re not up to advanced dating yet, besides, we have no place to go and I’m pretty sure this dress isn’t coming off in the truck.”
“What’s going on with that ? Have you made a decision ? Leaning one way or another ?”
Once again Amy sighed “I’m leaning towards taking the Director’s job and moving out. Have an opinion ?”
“You already know my opinion Amy, you need a life of your own.”
“And my family ?”
“Don’t be silly, they’ll always be your family just like I’ll always be your best friend and we’re all 10 minutes away.”
Once again Amy gave her friend a side glanced smile and getting a smile in return before she nudged Cass again.
“And we’ll always be there for you, never forget that.” Cass said nudging her back. “You sure you don’t want to try a garter and stockings, only you have to know.”
“How about I promise to wear a new panty and bra set with my panty hose and we’ll move on to garters next time.”
“Deal !!” Cass said smiling and leading Amy into their next stop, La Vie en Rose.
“I can’t believe I just spent 85 dollars on a bra, panties and panty hose.”
“Trust me Amy it’ll make you feel great wearing them, now come on, shoes and home.”
45 minutes later Cass popped the doors on her SUV and Amy carefully laid her dress in the backseat and the shoes and her other bags on the floor before climbing in to the passenger seat.
“I’m going to trip for sure Cass.”
“You’re not going to trip but you should definitely practice in the meantime and no hat Amy.”
“I won’t wear my hat and you’ll lend me a black clutch ?”
“The clutch isn’t a problem, we’ll switch cars that afternoon, you are not going out in that dress in your pick-up.”
“This ?” Amy said pointing around Cass’ brand new BMW.
“I don’t have a garage full of cars Amy.”
“You sure ?”
“I insist. We’ll swap back the next morning when you tell me everything. Are we stopping for coffee ?”
Amy checked her phone for the time and thought for a second. “Sure, we’ve got time, Lisa’s home for Lyndy.”
“And your trail ride ?”
“Would actually include Lyndy.”
“Didn’t realize that but it makes sense and really good for him that he doesn’t resent it.”
“I think they’ve sort of taken a shine to each other but are tip toeing around it.”
“Cute, so back to the job.” Cass prompted as they pulled over to an on-off road Tim Horton’s.
40 minutes later Cass made the slow turn into the Heartland driveway and under the familiar sign.
“So we’ll meet up Sunday afternoon or Monday and take a look at the space ?”
“Works for me.” Amy said hopping out simultaneously with the front door opening for Lyndy and Lisa who were coming out onto the porch.
Cass also got out and walked over and up the stairs to hug Lisa and then lean over for a big hug fro her goddaughter.
“How’d it go ?” Lisa asked when she stood.
“She’ll live.”
“I will definitely live.” Amy said handing a bag to Lisa and a smaller one to Lyndy.
“Love you Cass.” Amy said putting out her one free hand to hug her friend.
“Love you too, you Ok ?”
“I’m fine, I’ll see you Saturday night.”
Cass smiled at Lisa and waved at Lyndy before turning down the stairs.
“Put the bag on my bed sweetheart.” She said coming through the door and handing Lisa her dress so she could sit and get her boots off.
“Color ?” Lisa asked when Amy stood and put out her hand for the dress.
“Navy, dark navy actually. Come on I’ll show you.”
“Model ?”
“Nope, it’s perfect, but you can look and gently touch.”
She leaned over and carefully undid the zipper pulling apart the garment bag to show Lisa and Lyndy.
Lisa put out her hand to run the back across the fabric. “It’s long.”
“Midi.”
“It’s a beautiful dress Amy, you’ll look amazing.”
“Can I touch momma ? My hands are clean.”
“Touch not grab sweetheart.”
Lyndy reached out her hand and touched the fabric. “It’s soft and I like the flowers.”
“Think I’ll look pretty ?”
She smiled when Lyndy nodded.
Lisa nodded as well and reached down to the tag, then looked at Amy. “Go ahead, tell me I’m not crazy.”
Lisa turned the label and saw the 565 marked down to 385.
“Add shoes and lingerie, I just spent almost 600 dollars on an outfit.”
“You’re not crazy, not by a long shot. Come here, give me a hug and then show me the shoes and whatever. What’s Saturday night by the way ?”
“Ah I was going to ask, Caleb inspection, double date, he’s not happy I never dated Sam so burgers at KO’s so that he can see us together.”
“Sam ? Sam who ?”
“Langston, next door ?”
“What ?”
“I don’t know Lisa, it’s Caleb and they’re friends or drinking buddies, whatever.”
Lisa shrugged “I guess in a way I get it, either way it’s another date and yes, we’d be glad to watch this one.” She said bending over to tickle Lyndy.
“Lyndy, do you have homework ?”
“Two worksheets in her folder Amy.” Lisa answered.
“Go sit down at your desk and get them done and we can go for a ride.”
“Yay, a ride !!” Lyndy cried out running into her room.”
“Come with Lisa ?”
“I wish, I’m waiting on a call about a horse to make a call about a horse.”
“Finn said he might make it.” Amy mumbled checking her phone. “Maybe he got caught up in something.”
“Text him.”
“I texted when I got home, I don’t want to guilt him if he’s busy. Let’s go sit.”
The knock came as Amy was helping Lyndy with her boots which were new and not quite broken in. She glanced up at the screen door and smiled. “You are not dressed for a ride.” She said to Finn who was standing there in his overalls.
“I’m sorry, I ran late. I can help saddle though.”
“Come on in and say hi and Lyndy and I would love some help with our saddles.”
Lisa had come in from the living room and smiled “Hi Finn, how’s everything ?”
“Hi Lisa, everything’s great, you and Jack doing Ok ?”
“We’re good, not riding ?”
Finn laughed “In this outfit I’ll just become a puff of dust every time I came down on a horse. I’m do for a shower.”
“You can help me with Harley.”
Finn smiled “I’d love too.”
Amy fit her hat on and turned. “Let’s get ‘em saddled.”
Lyndy skipped on ahead and Amy reached out for Finn’s hand. Neither said anything when their hands joined.
Amy watched Lyndy walk over to the meadow where several of the horses were grazing and call out “Harley, Harley.”
She saw the big brown horse turn his head and shake before walking out to look at the fence.
“Come on Harley !!”
“Would you look at that.” Finn whispered as Harley trotted over.
Amy smiled at his reaction and then whistled at the herd. Both Spartan and Shadow turned and Amy called out “Shadow, come on sweetheart.”
A second later the light brown colt darted towards them.
They walked to the gate together which Finn opened and was surprised again when Lyndy just turned and walked towards the barn “come on Harley, you need a saddle” and the horse followed right behind her.
“Wonder where she gets that from ?” Finn said smiling as Shadow walked calmly alongside Amy towards the barn.
Amy clipped Shadow while Finn helped Lyndy clip him and then handed her a brush before grabbing her step stool and swinging it around Harley for her.
“Thank you Finn.”
“You’re very welcome Lyndy”
They worked quietly to brush the horse down before Lyndy ran to grab Harley’s blanket and carried it two handed over to Finn who laid it on Harley’s back before getting his saddle. When he was satisfied that it was snug he handed the reins to Lyndy who walked his out along with Amy who was ready at the same time.
Same as the last couple of times Lyndy held up her arms and Finn lifted her onto her
Saddle. She smiled at him before bending and hugging Harley’s neck.
Amy watched smiling when Finn walked around Shadow’s rump and Amy moved from his head.
“See you tomorrow ?”
Finn frowned, “I’m swamped all day and scheduled dinner out with Grandpa. How’s your Saturday ?”
“Center all morning then Lyndy has story time at the library.”
“Saturday night then.” He said “Leg up ?”
Amy smiled and leaned over to kiss him gently before he hoisted her up “Text if your plans change.”
“You too and have a good ride.”
“They’re all good Finn, talk later.”
He stood and watched as they pulled away and waved at them both when they turned for a last smile before riding off.
