Today is bittersweet for the family of @stacy.t.simmons because her second book, A Journey for Hope, is being released, but their dear Stacy is not here to celebrate with them. Join Stacy's family as they honor her memory in helping her heartwarming stories of hope and love reach as many people as possible ❤️ Stacy chose the North Carolina mountains as the setting for her books because she enjoyed so many wonderful vacations in Blowing Rock and Beech Mountain with our family. The background photo for this post was taken by our father (who is with Stacy in Heaven) during one of those vacations. For more Briar Creek fun and romance (including stops at some of our family's favorite spots like Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain and the Land of Oz), order a copy of A Journey for Hope from Amazon today: amzn.to/3XhMqJQ. (Link in bio) ⛰️ Let's all go purchase this new book of Stacy's today and help her family honor her memory and push her book to #1 on Amazon. #stacytsimmons #ajourneyforhope #BriarCreekLove #HopesTurn #celebratelit #smalltownlove #HonorStacysMemory #tweetsierailroad #grandfathermountain #thelandofoz #beechmountain #blowingrock https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnjx_j-L_uX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Credit to @outlanderscotland : “It has long been the policy both of the Crown and of myself, Mr. Fraser, to encourage the settlement of land in the Colony of North Carolina by intelligent, industrious and godly families, to the furtherance of the prosperity and security of all.” He lifted his cigar, took a deep lungful and exhaled slowly, pausing to cough. “To this end, sir, there is established a system of land grants whereby a large acreage may be given to a gentleman of means, who will undertake to persuade number of emigrants to come and settle upon a part of it under his sponsorship. This policy has been blessed with success over the last thirty years; a good many Highlanders and families from the Isles of Scotland have been induced to come and take up residence here. Why, when I arrived, I was astonished to find the banks of the Cape Fear River quite thick with MacNeills, Buchanans, Grahams, and Campbells!” The Governor tasted his cigar again, but this time the barest nip;he was anxious to make his point. “Yet there remains a great deal of desirable land to be settled, further inland toward the mountains. It is somewhat remote, and yet, as you say, for men accustomed to the far reaches of the Scottish Highlands—“ “I did hear mention of such grants, sir,” Jamie interrupted. “Yet is not the wording that persons holding such grants shall be white males, Protestant, and above thirty years of age? And this statement holds the force of law?” “That is the official wording of the Act, yes.” Mr. Tryon turned so that I saw him now in profile, tapping the ash from his cigar into a small porcelain bowl. The corner of his mouth was turned up in anticipation; the face of a fisherman who feels the first twitch on his line. “The offer is one of considerable interest,” Jamie said formally. “I must point out, however, that I am not a Protestant, nor are most of my kinsmen.” Diana Gabaldon, DOA, Ch 7 #DIanaGabaldon #OutlanderStarz #JamieFraser #SamHeughan #Outlander #DrumsofAutumn #Scotland #highlander #govenortryon #kingofmen #JAMMF #FrasersRidge #northcarolina #grandfathermountain https://www.instagram.com/p/BukyQ4OgL72/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1eiq2myvz73sm

Grandfather Mountain
My husband Bob and I recently made a trip to Grandfather Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The mountain used to be privately owned but was sold to the State of North Carolina several years ago.
The road up the mountain winds and hairpins at a steep grade, taking one past overview sights where one can stop and take in the scenery. Part of the road has a bit of notoriety, as Tom Hanks, in “Forest Gump”, ran part of the road for a scene in the movie.
Once at the top, we were in a large parking lot, and we parked the car in a spot that had nothing more than a concrete barrier to keep the car from literally going over the edge. The visitor center was filled with memorabilia of the mountain’s history, as well as an elevator for handicapped people to reach the walkway which allowed access to the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Now, the bridge is a mile above sea level but is only about 100 feet above the gorge over which the bridge is suspended.
We climbed the stairs outside the visitor center to access the short walkway to the bridge and were soon standing on it. The swinging part is somewhat misleading as the bridge is secured by multiple cables to minimize sway; in fact, it’s hard to make it sway much at all. We crossed over the bridge to the mass of rock on the other side, and that’s where I started to be truly amazed. The day was beyond gorgeous! The wind was non-existent, a rarity at that elevation above sea level. No clouds obstructed the view. Panoramic scenery spread out at our feet. I was speechless, not wanting to break the peace of the place.
Caution is advised on the mountain as the drop, on any side, is steep and sudden. I carefully inched forward, my feet and backside on the ground. Bob settled beside me. It was so quiet, even with about a dozen other people on the rock with us. We spent quite a bit of time simply sitting and enjoying the birds-eye view of the mountains at our feet. I was mesmerized. I raised my face to the sun and basked in its warmth. We took a selfie while sitting there, taking in the splendor God had created and spread at our feet.
When we finally reversed our steps back over the bridge, we noticed the branches of the short evergreen trees on the mountain all pointed in one direction, evidence of the strong winds which usually prevail at that elevation. The fact that there was no wind on the day we went was rare indeed! Once back in our car, we had to descend the road we’d ascended, and it was definitely not for the faint of heart. Low gear and Bob’s foot on the brakes got us around the sharp curves; clearly it would be easy to have an accident on the road, especially when the road is wet. We made it down without incident and resumed our drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We were back on the mountain a few months ago for the Highland Games and witnessed runners attacking the mountain in a grueling race. A marathon also started in Boone, NC, and ended on the mountain. My son-in-law is thinking about training to run the shorter race next year. I wish him luck!
My son-in-law and daughter’s house on Beech Mountain is only a 15-minute drive from Grandfather Mountain, so I imagine I’ll spend a lot more time on this historic mountain in the coming years. If you’re ever in the area, stop by and enjoy the view.

Grandfather Mountain State Park main parking lot filled up so we went around to the northwest side and hiked up the Profile Trail to Calloway Peak. About 5-6 miles with just over 2,000 feet of elevation gain.
