Editor's Note: Happy Thanksgiving from Superyachts.com
Editor's Note: Happy Thanksgiving from Superyachts.com
The past week in superyacht news has proved one of much activity. While the Festive period begins across the pond marked by today’s Thanksgiving celebrations, here in Europe, it’s business as usual. From shipyard launches to brokerage sales and of course the cold-weather providing plenty of reason for us to write about the most wanderlust worthy destinations, it’s been an exciting week for our Editorial Team.
Kicking off the week in news was none-other than Oceanco with their latest launch, Bravo. Making its way into both the waters of the shipyard’s facility, and the Top 100 largest yachts in the world, this 109m superseded the highly-acclaimed M/Y Dar in the rankings, entering at an astonishing number 38.
In fact, it was a week for large yachts across the board. Despite the festivities, brokers at Merle Wood & Associates and IYC have announced the sale of 70m superyacht Saint Nicholas - a Lurssen classic - marking successful end to the 52-day long sales process.
Seasoned owner’s John and Jean Staluppi also celebrated their largest yacht to-date. Thanks to monumental work from Benetti, 69m Spectre (the latest in a long line of Bond-titled boats) was delivered during a large celebration in Livorno, bringing beauty and Italian elegance that we look forward to seeing on the water.
If the sudden arrival of winter weather in Europe is leaving you planning your next yacht charter, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found in Catriona Cherrie’s latest destination article. Exploring 48 Hours at Anchor in Dynamic Abu Dhabi, there’s plenty to be admired about this up and coming destination including the Grand Prix circuit which makes YAS Marina the centre of all the action.
Speaking of places to dock your yacht, Porto Montenegro is another destination experiencing plenty of activity at present. Shaking off any mention of quiet season, Anna Solomon reports on a number of recent updates in this Eastern European paradise in her Marina Spotlight story this week.
Last but by no means least, it wouldn’t be an active week in news without some consideration for design. Aptly, Flying Charter announced that Cloud Atlas is undergoing a significant refit in preparation for a busy summer season. The refit will be completed for summer 2019, when she will re-emerge from the steel shed in her best shape ever, ready to provide unforgettable charters to lucky guests.
Showcasing a new kind of beauty, Hill Robinson have also revealed details of their recent refit of Codecasa’s 65m Eternity. Originally launched in 2010, the vessel has now relocated ready for a winter spent exploring the favoured islands of the Bahamas.
So while much of the industry remains at work, we wish those who celebrate a wonderful Thanksgiving. In the meantime, keep in touch with all the activity at Superyachts.com via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Carnival Corporation Signs Agreement With the Bahamas to Fund and Support Restoration of Rand Memorial Hospital Following Hurricane Dorian
Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with The Bahamas to fund and support flood damage repairs and basic restoration efforts at Rand Memorial Hospital, the primary hospital in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, which sustained significant damage in September from Hurricane Dorian.
The MOU agreement formalizes a collaborative partnership between The Bahamas and Carnival Corporation designed to provide hurricane relief funds for the joint mission of rapidly restoring Rand Memorial Hospital, with a collective goal of returning the facility to a safe and healthy environment for patients and medical professionals by the end of March 2020.
The Rand Memorial Hospital project comprises two critical restoration initiatives: remediation and basic repairs for the facility, and replacing damaged medical equipment.
Additionally, the hospital’s existing kitchen suffered damage, so the restoration project is expected to include the completion of a new kitchen that was partially constructed prior to the storm, which will be able to provide meals for patients and staff once the hospital officially reopens.
Working with a project coordinator that will have day-to-day oversight of all elements of the project, Carnival Corporation and the Government of The Bahamas will coordinate with collaborative partners in support of the restoration efforts, including Direct Relief, an international relief organization that provides critical medications and supplies during emergencies; World Central Kitchen, a food relief organization that serves meals to local communities following a crisis; the Grand Bahama Shipyard based in Freeport and the University of Miami, among others.
Also, during the restoration process, Carnival Corporation will support World Central Kitchen’s continued provisioning of daily meals for patients and staff as part of an ongoing partnership following the storm.
“We are extremely pleased to immediately begin remediation efforts at Rand Memorial, which serves as Grand Bahama Island’s primary medical facility and represents a critical step in our ability to recover and once again serve our community,” said Sharon Williams, administrator for Grand Bahama Health Services, the local healthcare system that includes Rand Memorial Hospital. “We are grateful to the Bahamian emergency response team from Carnival Corporation, Direct Relief, Grand Bahama Shipyard, University of Miami and its partners for working together to restore our facility as quickly as possible to a safe, secure and healthy environment for medical care.”
“In support of overall recovery efforts in The Bahamas, we have worked with government and community leaders to determine meaningful ways we can help that will deliver a lasting impact, and our shared mission to support the restoration of Rand Memorial Hospital exemplifies that commitment,” said Marie McKenzie, vice president of global ports and Caribbean government relations for Carnival Corporation. “This restoration project is crucial for the health needs of residents, while also supporting the longer-term vitality of the community and is indicative of the rebuilding progress on the island. Along with our partners, we look forward to supporting the government’s efforts to reopen Rand Memorial Hospital as an important step in the overall recovery of Grand Bahama Island.”
The Rand Memorial Hospital restoration efforts outlined in today’s MOU are part of a significant donation from Carnival Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Carnival Corporation, the company’s cruise line brands and its guests, and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation to provide funding and in-kind support to help overall hurricane recovery efforts in The Bahamas.
Since Hurricane Dorian hit in September, Carnival Corporation and its brands have worked with local and international organizations, including Grand Bahama Shipyard, Direct Relief, Tropical Shipping and World Central Kitchen, to partner with businesses across The Bahamas on projects providing both immediate relief and long-term impacts wherever possible.
The company’s partnership with Tropical Shipping collected and delivered an estimated 10 million pounds of supplies in over 250 shipping containers to the country – made possible by generous donations from countless individuals and organizations throughout South Florida and North America. In addition, two ships from the company’s Carnival Cruise Line brand – Carnival Liberty and Carnival Pride – made stops in Freeport to deliver relief supplies to assist residents, including water, generators, chain saws, prepared meals and medical supplies.
With support from Carnival Corporation, Carnival Foundation, and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation, Direct Relief has delivered more than $2.9 million in life-saving medical aid to health facilities across the Bahamas, including Rand Hospital.
Carnival Corporation and Carnival Foundation are among the organizations that provided support to World Central Kitchen, which served more than 25,000 meals per day to people in Abaco and Grand Bahama following the storm. In total, Chef Jose Andres's World Central Kitchen has provided over one million meals throughout The Bahamas.
Carnival Corporation brands also conducted donation drives to support The Bahamas through Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen. Overall, Carnival Cruise Line guests and employees have donated more than $500,000 to organizations supporting Bahamas relief efforts.
In addition to these broad relief efforts, three of Carnival Corporation’s brands – Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises – are continuing regular sailings to The Bahamas with an expected 250 total calls to the country throughout the remainder of 2019, helping to support the country’s tourism industry and its vital economic impact on businesses and residents. Carnival Cruise Line officially returned to Grand Bahama in mid-October when multiple ships docked in Freeport for the first time since the storm, marking the return of regular cruise calls to Grand Bahama Island.

M/Y Solo to Showcase 360 Degrees of Sunshine
M/Y Solo to Showcase 360 Degrees of Sunshine
As summer is soon approaching, superyacht shipyards, designers and owners are in turn, preparing for this year’s monumental Monaco Yacht Show. With exciting announcements and launches along the way, we take a look at Tankoa’s latest project, M/Y Solo, in collaboration with two influential Italian designers, Francesco Paszkowski and Margherita Casprini.
At 72-meters, the superyacht showcases ample space throughout her indoor and outdoor spaces which include numerous relaxation spots and entertainment facilities leaving her guests spoilt for choice.
However Solo’s interior - designed by Casprini - is where we see true Italian flair; sophisticated with subtle hints of elegant marble etched throughout. Casprini’s eye for detail is continuous from each luxurious room to the next; rich hues laced with luxurious textures and patterns, complimenting each other from floor to ceiling: everything an Italian-interior should aspire to be.
Featuring a beach club with a salon, bar, sauna and hammam as well as a master suite with 180-degree views on a private terrace complete with sunpads and jacuzzi guests can enjoy a charter experience in their utmost choice of relaxation. Solo sleeps twelves guests in six luxurious staterooms with additional accommodations including a large VIP, two double-bed staterooms and two twin staterooms.
Neverthess her suitablity for the Med is highlighted by her sundeck, where guests can soak up the sun whilst enjoying a 360 degree view, take a dip in the pool (which also converts into a touch-and-go helipad) on the skylounge, listen to the soulful sounds from the baby grand piano situated in the upper salon or take a bite to eat in a choice of several alfresco dining areas.
Launching this summer and to be shown at the 2018 Monaco Yacht Show, Solo is now available to charter with Northrop & Johnson in the Bahamas and Caribbean, starting from €595,000 per week.

Carnival Corporation Relief Effort Collects 2,841 Tons of Supplies for the Bahamas; Company Thanks Individuals and Organizations for Generous Donations
Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL;NYSE: CUK) today announced that its relief program to provide humanitarian aid to The Bahamas collected and delivered during its first week over 2,841 tons of food and supplies in over 90 shipping containers – a remarkable milestone made possible by generous donations from countless individuals and organizations throughout South Florida and North America.
"The outpouring of support for our friends in the Bahamas has been so touching, and so many people and organizations have stepped up asking how they can get involved," said Roger Frizzell, chief communications officer for Carnival Corporation. "We want to publicly thank everyone who has made donations for their efforts, support and genuine concern for our friends and neighbors in The Bahamas. Through our partnership with Tropical Shipping, we are able to ship much-needed supplies directly to The Bahamas National Emergency Management Agency in Freeport for distribution to the thousands of Bahamians lacking food, water and life's most essential needs. The response has been inspiring, and we cannot thank everyone enough."
Added Frizzell: "With the program continuing, we encourage everyone to please stay involved in this humanitarian mission." Details regarding donation collections are further below.
While food and supplies have been provided by many anonymous donors, some of the most significant donations have been made by Broward County Public Schools, Cheney Brothers, the City of Dania Beach, City of Pembroke Pines, Florida International University, JM Honda of Miami, Mater Lakes Academy, Miami-Dade County, Palm Beach County, Peanut Proud, Sedano's Supermarket, Starbucks Coffee, United Way of Broward County and Xtreme Aviation.
In addition, collection efforts are being coordinated with the City of Miramar Fire Rescue, and with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Bahamas, providing shipping for supplies being donated at its Washington, D.C., embassy. Additionally, Social Global Leaders, in partnership with United Way of Miami-Dade, is donating up to 200 "eco-filters" – reusable and sustainable water purification systems that convert saltwater to water that is safe to drink.
Thanks to the ongoing dedicated efforts in South Florida and throughout North America, Carnival Corporation and Tropical Shipping were able to support the direct shipment of medical supplies, water, food, cots, tents, wheelbarrows, shovels, chainsaws, generators, appliances, clothing and other essentials. The effort included two Carnival Cruise Line ships, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Pride, delivering donated items to Freeport. In addition, Carnival Corporation brands are conducting donation drives to support The Bahamas through Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen. To date, Carnival Cruise Line guests and employees have donated more than $350,000 to the two organizations supporting Bahamas relief efforts.
Numerous drop-off locations for relief supplies are now open throughout South Florida for the ongoing effort, and a list at the end of this announcement includes addresses, contact information, hours of operation and other relevant details for each collection point. For those outside South Florida, supplies can be shipped directly to Tropical Shipping's address in Riviera Beach.
In addition to the deliveries, Carnival Corporation is working with charities positioned throughout the Bahamas. This includes supporting Rand Hospital, the main hospital on Grand Bahama, by providing medical equipment and supplies in partnership with Direct Relief. Carnival Corporation and its philanthropic arm, Carnival Foundation, are among those providing support to World Central Kitchen, which is serving more than 25,000 meals per day to people in Abaco and Grand Bahama. As of September 16, Chef Jose Andres's World Central Kitchen has provided over 250,000 meals throughout the Bahamas. To support World Central Kitchen's efforts, donate here.
While relief support is ongoing, popular destinations in The Bahamas that had little impact from the hurricane have returned to normal operations, an important development in the country's recovery.
Carnival Corporation announced September 13 that three of its cruise line brands – Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises – are returning to the Bahamas and resuming regular guest sailings. Collectively, the three brands are planning over 250 sailings to The Bahamas through the end of 2019, supporting the country's tourism industry, which has a vital positive economic impact on local businesses and people. The sailings will bring visitors and business to Nassau and the company's Bahamian private island destinations, Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays.
In addition, Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport reopened September 11, receiving its first commercial vessel since the storm. The shipyard remains on track for the next planned cruise ship dry-dock visit, Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Ecstasy, scheduled to arrive on October 5.
Carnival Corporation recently announced its philanthropic arm, Carnival Foundation, its nine global cruise line brands and the Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation have pledged to donate $2 million in funding and in-kind support for relief efforts in The Bahamas.
Information on the relief efforts and ways to get involved can be found at www.bahamas.com/relief.
