some old flintwood wip
i know where home is flintwood my beloved
Marcus had spent the better part of the past six years making up for the brunt of his father’s sins, and then the added weight of his own. It was a thankless job. It didn’t matter that he’d never cast an Unforgivable, or that he’d kept his head down — people still cut a wide berth around him, and he preferred it that way. If he barely said ten sentences a day, if he retreated back to his flat after every day, ate a dinner hastily cobbled together, and spent the night with his knuckles wrapped, then it was for the best.
He’d cut everything off with Wood a year before the brunt of the war, before the worst of his moral failings. It was hard, at the end of it all, not to look at Wood and detest his goodness, his rising star, the naive innocence of an unburdened bloodline. At twenty-one, Wood had been summoned to first string and the pitch had fallen in love. Scotland had made it a known bet that they’d be knocking on Wood’s window for the regional team once the World Cup came back around. It was on the eve of that dinner meeting that Marcus had called everything off. He’d justified it — they’d been contentious bed mates at most, sparring rivals at best, meeting with no particular cadence to fall into bed together.
Marcus was smart enough to know that whatever similarities they had, the core shade of their beings was different.
And so. The war.
He had nightmares often — of blue-black woods, of snaps and running so hard his chest hurt. There was a small subset of people Marcus had ever held in high esteem, and they’d splintered, one by one. Bole, Higgs, Warrington, Derrick, Urqhart: Snatcher, casualty, marked, killed in action, marked. It had become a horribly easy list to recite. Slytherins of their age didn’t make it out often.
The Flint name had long fallen from grace, that much was clear. His father, his older brother — two marked wizards who’d died in the war. Marcus couldn’t hold space for that. He had a business to run, and that was all he could think about without losing it.
If it weren’t for Montague, he’d have never come to a Puddlemere game. They were the last two strongholds of their old team, and he’d conceded because he’d seen the empty space over Montague’s shoulder where Cassius should’ve been, and after that he’d been unable to say no.
He hadn’t thought all of it through, to be frank. He couldn’t pay attention to anything else; not the roar of the crowd, nor the referee’s contentious calls — Wood was glowing, brilliant in front of the hoops. Marcus couldn’t tell what was worse: the deep, deep jealousy for the first stringers, or the ache of watching Oliver at his best.
The quaffle finally flew from a Ballycastle player’s hand to get past Wood’s outstretched fingers.
“Good contenders for the cup, yeah?”
Marcus merely nodded at Montague’s statement, too occupied with how the familiar stubborn, frustrating tilt to Wood’s mouth made him claustrophobic.
Wood had gotten better since the last time Marcus had seen him play — a scrimmage between Puddlemere and Falmouth that still surfaced in his memory no matter how much he steeled himself against it.
“They’re probably going to get beaten out by Tutshill,” Montague continued, voice filled with longing, “But their chaser line is looking strong.”
Montague could no longer play, not after war injuries and a trip down a Vanishing cabinet, but he was an avid enough watcher that they traded observations and statistics over a meal on occasion. Marcus kept an arms-distance between himself and most people who’d known him, but it was hard to say no to Graham, not when he still struggled with recalling memories, things that Marcus knew he should’ve remembered cold.
(Winning the Quidditch cup, being made Prefect, the odd crushing disappointment that plagued them all when Warrington hadn’t been selected for the Triwizard’s cup.)
Puddlemere won in a landslide, which they needed. They were trailing Tutshill and Ballycastle by 100 points and the season was drawing to a close. Marcus allowed himself a moment to appreciate the sight of Wood in the middle of a dogpile of happy Puddlemere players, before excusing himself from Montague. There was no point in lingering in the stands, and both men knew that they would see each other at some point anyways — pureblood circles ran small nowadays. No point in causing public concern over gatherings when it was easier to lay low.
The impulse to dive into the inner labyrinth of the pitch grounds was one that Marcus didn’t try hard to fight. He rarely got energy like this where he lived. The sheer amount of adrenaline was enough to make anyone dizzy. Post-matches were a gaggle of players, of staff and press junkets, and he was one of many, many bodies weaving in and out. He allowed himself to drink in the bustle, the hum of excitement from Puddlemere supporters, and it was a nice contrast to the quiet of the shop.
It was, in hindsight, an idiotic idea, because —
“Flint?”
It was a voice that plagued him in his sleep, one he’d held onto during the deepest, darkest winter months during the war. Marcus would know it anywhere. He had never wanted to hear it again.
Wood had the trained reflexes of a professional Keeper, and so his hand was already on Marcus’ shoulder by the time he’d made up his mind to walk away. There was nothing else to do but turn around and face the man.
“Good game,” Marcus said, and he shut his mouth before anything else could escape. There was likely nothing coherent he had to say, because this was the closest he’d been to Wood in three years, and he’d never been able to rid himself of this weak spot.
“Thanks,” Wood said in a carefully neutral tone, “I never expected to see you at a Puddlemere game.”
It wasn’t a direct attack, but Wood’s eyes were cool, appraising. Even when they weren’t strangers, Marcus made it a point not to attend, albeit for different reasons.
“Montague wanted to,” Marcus replied. He didn’t elaborate; Wood didn’t need to know that for some odd reason, Warrington had had a soft spot for the middling team.
“I see,” Wood said, though his tone of voice indicated that he didn’t, not really. “Well. What did you think?”
Marcus shrugged and made a non-commital noise.
Wood stared at him for a beat, before scoffing. “Man of few words still, huh?”
“I’ll be heading out then,” Marcus said, though it came out more harshly than he’d wanted it to, on account of his words getting stuck in his throat.
“Sure,” Wood said, and he released his hold on Marcus’ shoulder. Marcus took the opportunity to hightail out of the stadium, and though he managed to apparate back to his flat without splinching himself, he didn’t manage to shake off the phantom touch of Oliver’s hand for the rest of the night.

heyy, i think my ask got lost but:
regarding the rob stringer ask that you answered, i was wondering why is rob stringer such a big deal.? also, this kinda got me intrigued, curious and angry(blacklisting of louis from uk radio) so i went on to research for myself and i fumbled upon this article: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-51360192
it was the very first article that showed up, i didn't even need to dig, and it's directly by BBC, so is this BBC not the same as BBC radio or what..?
it's a little confusing for me cuz in my country nobody really pays any mind to radios and what they are playing and we usually stay tuned to our fave artists via tv shows, social media or simply music apps etc etc
Hi love. Rob Stringer is “a big deal” because he was head of Columbia when 1D were together and then head of Sony (parent company of Columbia) when Harry went solo (and Louis got stuck with Syco). So he’s had his fingers all over whatever contracts were signed by all of the guys, and most likely had plenty of decision making power over the closeting of HL and the blocking of Louis’ solo career.
BBC Radio and BBC TV are both divisions of the British Broadcasting Company. Louis having that disastrous interview on the Morning Show wasn’t the beginning of his being blocked from BBC radio. I think his blacklisting and image damage extends as far back as XFactor and Simon Cowell. There are many people involved and I don’t know if you can really point a finger at Simon or Rob Stringer and say that’s this is the key person responsible for it all. But, him appearing on that show and that article being written is just part of a very complex pattern of abuse he’s been subject to.
As for radio being important… I really don’t know why it seems to make a difference. I do think being nominated for The Brits or The Grammys doesn’t have without radio airplay and even if we know The Grammys are bullshit, it’s still great advertising and it’s still seen as prestigious in that you’re “accepted” by the music industry insiders.
But I think when people complain about him being blacklisted, they mean that he’s almost entirely absent from everything—radio for sure, but also radio concert events like Jingle Bell Ball/Summertime Ball, British talk shows like Graham Norton etc., British award shows (even the Rolling Stone UK award show was tainted by his performance being removed and his interview being publicized using Harry’s name).
I don’t buy into a lot of the stuff some solo fans talk about in terms of Louis’ career blockades, but for an artist who has such an ardent fanbase to be shut out of so many ways of advancing his career, you can’t help but assume there’s something underhanded happening.

///

DAVID GRAHAM BAD DOGS For Art Stringer None of them was ever bad, trotting off camera for the operant morsel. Oh yes, they were bad, my childhood dogs, crinkled pets of the family album with their names and nicknames, impossible as fleas how they fled behind our green sofa, where with cunning honed for centuries on bad blood in bone they tore one idea from the next. In my wallet Lassie guarded baseball cards and a Christmas dollar- famous photo for postage and handling, and her weekly takes I could not show to Dandy, Flasher, Spade, and Sniffy who knew nothing better than our smell and put nose prints on our birdbrain windows. Yes, worse than brutal fun, how my dogged brother and I harnessed our bikes with paired spaniels to pull our weight at a stern word. Yukon King re-ran five hundred Saturdays his limited missions. We invented trials no hero would fathom--baby dresses, grapes soaked in gravy, sticks pantomimed into the snapping air. They saved us from something human, how they refused breeding to our silly pedigrees, and at the merest chirp of birdsong harried in unison the flushing weeds like brutal, exuberant owners.
The reason I chose this poem was that I love dogs. It was easy for me to choose the topic because I can't get enough of seeing puppies and petting them. The words I had to look up were cunning, pantomimed, and exuberant. The aesthetic of the poem would be nostalgic. The first term I will use is the protagonist. Which is the person who is narrating the story. The second term I will use is the theme. Words I would use to describe the theme are love, reality, and family. My third term is Irony, which is found in the last stanza, " They saved us from something human, how they refused to breed to our silly pedigrees," from what I understand the dogs are rescuing the humans, but in reality, the humans rescued the dogs. The central image would be to appreciate our pets more. A metaphor I found was "where with cunning honed for centuries on bad blood in the bone they tore one idea from the next…..merest chirp of birdsong harried in unison the flushing weeds like brutal, exuberant owners." Yes, there is a narrator, it's the person who is telling about their childhood experiences. I will do a synopsis of the poem, but stanza by stanza. The first stanza introduces the dogs. The writer goes on about how they were annoying and hyper, and how overall they were just dogs. In the second stanza, the narrator brings up a Christmas memory and shows how the dogs were hyper. The third stanza is about his brother. Lastly, the last stanza showed how humans how are ungrateful to our pets.

1 familial, 2 misc, 1 romantic, 1 adversarial + 4 platonic connections have all been added to the page !
cailin mallister ( anya chalotra ) is looking for their familial/adversarial connection of their birth mother’s family. they would be in the age range of any age with the possible faces of utp (must be either white or indian as they are blood related to cailin). paige does not require prior contact at @encirclet. house mallister has an ancient feud with the ironborn, stemming from a falling out between friends hundreds of years ago. because of this, the mallisters have taken up arms against ironborn ships attempting to raid the coasts of the riverlands and have a very open distaste for those of the iron islands. cailin’s father did not agree, however, and married her mother (a lady of an your muse’s house, your muse therefore must be ironborn) in secret, only for the marriage to be forcibly ended by his older brother, the then ruling lord of seagard. nonetheless, cailin came of their clandestine union. their father was quickly married off to another lady of the mainland, and to the rest of the realm — cailin is her child. their two younger brothers are of her stepmother, and even they are unaware of cailin’s true parentage. now that her father, stepmother and uncle have all passed, the only people privy to cailin’s relation to your muse’s house are her and your muse (and their house members, depending on what you decide!). cailin will stop at nothing to keep that fact a secret, and so tensions are incredibly high. your muse can be of any relation to cailin’s mother wynafryd, who died almost 20 years ago at age 28. this would include them being cailin's half sibling, a cousin, an aunt/uncle, or any kind of relation you can come up with! your muse’s house structure would be up to you beyond the inclusion of cailin’s birth mother.
brandon reed ( timothee chalamet ) is looking for their misc connection of a southern spy. they would be in the age range of 21+ with the possible faces of utp. ooc does not require prior contact @qcyqoyi. with how things have gone since the trip south, it’s no surprise people are taking precautions and the northern master of whisperers feels he needs a better eye kept on the southern king. whatever this person’s reason for feeding info to the north is utp but they’re arrangement has been going on since everyone left the capital at the end of arc 1.
deirassi ( camila queiroz ) is looking for their platonic connection of a close friend/trainer. they would be in the age range of 25+ with the possible faces of sisi stringer, ewan mitchell, ismael cruz cordova, dewanda wise, kieron moore, utp. ooc does not require prior contact @qcyqoyi. this person was from westeros but left ( for whatever reason is utp ). they met in essos while deira was with an acting troupe and agreed to teach her to fight. the two became close over the years and still keep in touch when they don’t see each other for long. deirassi has very few people she holds dear to them and this person is one of them. whatever reason for returning to westeros is utp as well!
myriah yronwood ( pallavi sharda ) is looking for their platonic connection of a best friend. they would be in the age range of 30-32 with the possible faces of nick sagar, kat graham, haruna kawaguchi, ram charan any fcoc. ooc does not require prior contact @qcyqoyi. myriah is a bit of a wild one at times and likes to travel. they're most likely the calm to her storm type of deal and has been by her side on all her adventures. they're one of the few people that can temper her when she gets a little out of hand. a friendship that's more like family. must be a dornish muse!
myriah yronwood ( pallavi sharda ) is looking for their adversarial connection of a broken betrothal. they would be in the age range of 30+ with the possible faces of kat graham, brenda song, raymond ablack, nick sagar . ooc does not require prior contact @qcyqoyi. myriah has never been crazy about the idea of having to marry once she became ruling lady but knew it would inevitably happen. however, when her mother made this arrangement years before her passing, myriah was quite pleased as the two hit it off and feelings began to blossom. but riah got cold feet and soon found herself back on a ship, sailing away from the whole ordeal. she still feels badly about it and is worried about seeing them for whatever reaction they'll have as well as dealing with her own guilt.
myriah yronwood ( pallavi sharda ) is looking for their romantic connection of a possible betrothal. they would be in the age range of 30+ with the possible faces of brenda song, dewanda wise, sofia carson, ram charan, ismael cruz cordova, raymond ablack, yang yang . ooc does not require prior contact at url. myriah has not been too concerned with finding herself someone to wed but since her mother passed, her father has taken it upon himself to do it for her ( which she doesn't mind since he knows her better than her mother did ). it would be a good prospect on paper but the two seem to butt heads more often than not every time they have met. maybe because for once she feels well matched and irks her just a little bit. also, they would not be a ruling position unless they are willing to give it up should they get married.
ranida fowler ( fah yongwaree ) is looking for their misc connection of past lovers ( 3 ). they would be in the age range of 24-30 with the possible faces of zion moreno, daniela nieves, tripti dimri, sophia ali, ashley moore, any female fc. ooc does not require prior contact at url. ranida does not often get attached ( but does with the right person! ) so how things ended and if they were serious can be plotted out! she has traveled quite a bit but never to the north so if northern would need a reason to have been in dorne/the south.
ranida fowler ( fah yongwaree ) is looking for their platonic connection of a girl gang ( 3 ). they would be in the age range of 25-28 with the possible faces of zion moreno, samantha logan, lulu antariska, yara shahidi, charithra chandran, amita suman, brianne tju, adeline rudolph, tripti dimri, sophia ali, anna lambe, cierra ramirez, any female fcoc. ooc does not require prior contact at url. ranida can definitely be a pain in the ass and her friends know it but these 4 are all ride or die. they travel together, wreak havoc together, and will fight together if need be. have mostly known each other since childhood so dornish or needing a reason to have been in dorne young.

"BOY, 7, DISCOVERED IN BED BLOOD-SMEARED AND FILTHY," Toronto Star. September 17, 1943. Page 2. ---- Frank Newton, Father, Committed for Trial on Assault Charge ---- TERRIBLE BRUISES --- "A" Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Menzies. One of the worst cases of alleged assault to be aired in court for some years was outlined when Frank Newton appeared on a charge of assaulting his seven-year-old son, Graham Newton, causing him actual bodily harm.
Accused was prepared to plead guilty, but Crown Attorney McFad- den suggested to court this plea be not accepted and that his worship had the power, after hearing cer- tain evidence, to commit accused for trial.
After hearing evidence of Dr. A. Cooper and Miss K. Mabee, Children's Aid society, Magistrate Menzies sent Newton on for trial in a higher court.
Dr. A. Cooper testified the Newton lad was brought into the Hospital for Sick Children on Sept. 2.
"He was rather badly beaten up." said witness. "He could not see out of his left eye, nor use his left band. and could not walk on account of pain. He was covered in dirt and dry blood from head to toe. There were bruises on every inch of his body, and cuts on his head, upper lip and foot.
"The bruises on his back and abdomen were severe. His left wrist was fractured and is still bothering him. His injuries were extensive and very painful."
In answer to Crown Attorney McFadden, the doctor said the injuries could not be caused by a fall, and that they were consistent with being kicked.
