OC Fun Facts Tag

Thanks for the tag, @illarian-rambling! I particularly liked that your villain has a New Jersey accent lmao.

I'll do five fun facts for each of my main characters.

Uileac Korviridi

His favorite Bremish festival (predictably) is Feast of the Horse, particularly the mounted archery competition. I mean duh. He makes everyone else look like pathetic losers.

He doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, but Cerie does, so their house is usually filled with all manner of sweets.

Uileac has a bunch of weird little rituals he does before battle, like making sure he has an even number of arrows (lucky) and brushing his horse Erix's armor with blessed oils. I mean, I guess they've worked? He hasn't died yet ....

One would expect such a dextrous man would play an instrument, but he doesn't, he's too busy to learn. Though he thinks the fiddle is pretty cool.

If he did not have his beloved palomino mare Erix, he'd probably want a dapple gelding.

Orrinir Relickim

Even though he went through all the same training as Uileac did, Orrinir has never figured out how to fire a bow. No amount of training seems to make it stick.

His favorite Bremish festival is the Feast of Saint Mermina, where people throw flower votives of the saint into the water and swimmers try to retrieve them. Every damn year, Uileac intentionally designs his so they fall apart, but poor Orrinir tries anyway.

Orrinir LOVES to bake. He's very proud of his manly and cool creations in the kitchen. You know, like little apple dumplings shaped like hearts. Incredibly manly. Very brave.

Because he does not drink much, Orrinir is a total lightweight. As such, he typically is the responsible non-drinker who escorts his mildly drunk husband Uileac and embarrassingly drunk sister-in-law Cerie home.

Orrinir has been known to play around with a mini piano (kalimba) on occasion, usually when bored out in the field. He likes it because you don't really need any musical knowledge to get it to work.

Haniya Aina

Haniya is EXACTLY what you think when you think "horse girl." Kinda snobby, convinced that she has a unique bond with horses that no one else in the world could ever fathom, and obsessed with the latest and greatest in tack trends. Her horse Saelsie has tack that costs more than most peoples' houses, and can you blame her? Girlie is a literal princess.

Because her mother, Queen Susuma, was essentially absent throughout her childhood, Haniya was raised by governesses and teachers.

She loves music boxes and has quite a collection. Diplomats who want to get in her mother's good graces know to bring Haniya a pretty music box for her trouble. One of her favorites has a mechanical dancing horse.

Haniya's brother, Prince Daiski, was meant to learn fencing, but Haniya, who actually wanted to learn it, was told it wasn't a "women's skill." As such, she lied to Daiski about when his practices were supposed to be and showed up instead, threatening the instructor into silence. Those were her favorite childhood memories.

Her favorite books are about faraway lands, especially travel logs of distant places. Any time that a diplomat comes to visit her mother, she corners them and picks their brain.

Ono Kagan

Ono, being deeply socially awkward, is more comfortable around animals than people. Even animals that he's rather scared of, like dogs.

His first romantic/sexual relationship is with his wife, Vinanna, who is charmed by how sweet and shy he is. YES! The pathetic virgin gets the pretty girl!

The average Sinan outside of the upper classes is illiterate, but Ono taught himself after becoming a royal guard by taking shifts guarding the library. There, he read the children's books that Haniya and her siblings would have been told as children before working his way up to more difficult texts.

His most prized possession is his sword, Melikik ("the sea cutter"), made by his father, a blacksmith.

Ono can't hold his liquor. Like at all.

Mordrek Willets

Mordrek is somehow both the straightest and the least homophobic person in all of Sina. Gay men serve as great wingmen, and lesbians can teach him even more ways to romance a beautiful woman. Bisexuals? Why, he admires anyone who has enough eyes to ogle both sides.

He considers his mule, Carrot, to be his best friend and closest confidante. Carrot gets the best of everything, even when Mordrek can't afford to feed himself.

His greatest fear is heights. Maybe that's why Queen Susuma keeps sending him to high-altitude places.

Mordrek is agnostic. He jokes that all the gods probably hate him, so he doesn't want to believe they exist.

Though Mordrek gambles on occasion, he only plays games that he knows he can win with his wiles. Or by paying someone to fix the game for him.

Cerie Korviridi

Cerie is one of the most irritating overachievers you will ever meet. When she's working on something, you better leave her alone or you're going to get your head bit off.

Sometimes she likes to daydream about what she would have been if she didn't become a High Poet. Her top three alternate professions are horse trainer, potter, and leatherworker.

Cerie is messy af and is always forgetting where she put stuff. Orrinir yells at her about it all the time.

She's a night owl, which is unusual in a country that doesn't have artificial light like Breme. She just likes it when all the world is asleep and she can focus on whatever she wants to do.

Her favorite festival is the Feast of Snow Lights, where people go around and recite two-line traditional poems; if the homeowner misremembers it, they have to give the guest a drink. She, of course, has them all memorized, but sometimes she'll come up with her own just to screw with people, and then they have to call a "truce" and both give each other something.

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Cat on the Hero’s Lap by Kousuke Iijima and Shiori 

Red is a level 3 hero, who goes on quests with his companions Grace (a level 12 mage) and Aina (a level 10 martial artist). Red is very brave when it comes to fighting monsters like goblins and even dragons. But recently, he’s become the victim of a creature that’s proving to be even more dangerous: a cat who keeps keeps coming over to sleep on Red’s lap. 

Red needs to level up if he’s ever going to help his party with their ultimate mission: to defeat the demon king. But every time this mysterious cat appears, it heads straight for Red’s lap. While the cat is sleeping on his lap, Red can’t fight at all, he can’t level up, and his party is defeated again and again.

Is this cat his friend or his enemy? And does Red have any future as a hero, if he can’t even manage to get around a single cat?

Give this manga to teens who enjoy animals, role-playing games, and stories that will make them laugh out loud!

IDEAS FOR DC COMICS X-MEN

Storm: Aina Akinrotimi, aYoruba woman born in Nigéria, is a spiritual daughter and reencarnation of the orisha deities Oiá (Iansã) and Xangô, inheriting their powers to control the thunder, lightning, wind and rain.

Can also spit fire from her mouth.

Has great ability with the sword, the dagger and the double ax.

Is claustrophobic due to having been a prisoner of the Shadow King in her childhood.

Phoenix: An Alaskan born doctor in Psychology and Genetics, airplane pilot,  computer comunications officer and lieutenant of NASA, Madeline Jean Grey Pryor was born a mutant with strong telepathic and telecinetic powers. During a mission in space, the spaceship suffered an accident, and Madeline assumed the pilot duties to save the crew, doing an emergency landing that crossed trough the cosmic rays of a solar storm and falling in the planet Mars. As she recovered, Madeline discovered that the survival of her crew and herself was helped by the fact that a cosmic entity named the Phoenix fused itself with her, enhancing her powers beyond telecinetic control and reading human minds, but also reading the minds of animals and the memories of people contained in inanimate objects, flight, building and transforming objects trough the control of invisible molecules, and healing. Assuming the codiname Phoenix, Madeline started acting independently as a superheroine and political activisit for mutant rights, before joining the X-Men.

Wolverine: The 5'3 tall James Logan Howlett , who prefers to be called Logan, is a mutant with the powers of a fast healing factor, longevity, enchanced senses and bone retractible claws in his knucles born in Canada during the mid 19th century. Veteran of the American Civil War, Crimean War, First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, his longevity prowess in the battlefield made him a target of the High Evolutionary, who captured him to make a subject of his experiments, inserting adamantium to cover his bone claws (but avoiding doing the same to the rest of his skeleton, so as not to slow his healing factor and erase his agility).

Logan escaped before the High Evolutionary could furter experiment on him, living for years as a mercenary spy for the Canadian and British inteligences, until befriending and joining the X-Men, who remind him how fight for something bigger than mere survival: an ideal, to help others find freedom, justice and equality.

Nightcrawler: A kind hearted, romantic and adventurous blue fuzzy, point ears, pointy tailed man, looking like a mix between an elph and a demon, is a circus acrobat, aeriealist and trapeze artist who became the founder and leader of the X-Men. Has teleportation powers, and is a fast and graceful swordsman, who can pilot airplanes and zeppelin airships, acting as the captain of a pirate crew.

Archangel: An Earth born descendant of Tanagarians, kidnapped as a baby and raised by Apocalypse to be his Emissary of Death, a young Angel revolted against his adoptive father when he saw the complexity of human lives and how many people are determined to fight in protecting Earth and its inhabitants (even when many humans act prejudiced and ungrateful against metahumans, mutates, mutants and aliens). Behind the brave and stoic Avenging Archangel, is the adventurous archeologist, history and theology professor Warren Hal Warthington.

Dazzler: A competent, graduation diploma aprooved  lawyer, the passion of Alison Blaire always has been performing. Dreaming of becoming an aclaimed singer and actress, she naively signed a contract to perform in an underground theater.

The performance in question was actually  fighting to the death in a gladiator arena against other mutants for the amusement of rich patrons of the Hellfire Club.

Finding the situation revolting, Alison encouraged and led the other gladiators into a huge revolt.

This was the moment in which she decided to adopt the codiname  Dazzler, both as a feisty superheroine, and as a performer who uses her music both to touch listeners with beauty, and to inspire compassion, solidarity and social change.

Colossus: Born and raised in a collective farm in Soviet Russia, Piotr Rasputin is a tall, strong, yet calm and gentle man, with a great talent for drawing, spinning, weaving and sewing. Has the mutant power to transform his skin into a strong, impenetrable organic armour, similar to metal. Captured by agents of the Hellfire Club to become a gladiator, became a great friend of Dazzler after she helped him and the others to fight back and escape. Is the person who makes the clothes for her to perform on stage, as well as all the X-Men's battle uniforms.

Beast: Found trapped like an animal in a zoo cage and rescued by Phoenix, Henry 'Hank' Philip McCoy, is a mutant with long arms of large hands and long legs of large feet, that make him move with great agility, balance and dexterity, gifted with genius level scientific intelect, a healing factor, enhanced senses, super strenght, fangs, an ability to emit mood altering pheromones, and a body fully covered in thick greyish-blue fur, acompanied by black hair with shades of dark-blue and silver over his head.

Is an athlete experienced in American Football and wrestling, an expert in biology, genetics, chemistry, eletrical and computer engineering, always curious to learn speaking new languages, and a lover of classic literature and the arts.

Showing a light hearted sense of humor, overall prefers to behave in a level headed, diplomatic way ... but knows how to use violence when necessary, and his strenght in combat must not be underestimated.

Banshee: An irish woman who has powers of releasing thundering sonar waves with her scream, originally was a sailor before joining the X-Men. Is a great navigator and cartographer, and the person who gives a home for every X-Men to live, in an old Castle fused to a Lighthouse known as Cassidy Keep, located in County Mayo, Ireland.

Rogue: A young woman who survived hiding in the sewers after her parents rejected her for being a mutant. Has the power to take away other people's memories, abilities, energy and powers with the touch of her skin, along with super strenght and the gift to fly. Slowly learns to trust other people, loose her fears and insecutirities and control her powers with the help of her new friends of the X-Men. Loves trains, collecting and playing with trail models, having dreamed in her childhood of being a condutor, and plays folk, blues and rock music in an acoustic guitar that has written over its surface "This Machine Kills Fascists".

The Prosperous Night Market really has it all. From magical amulets to ancient tomes to even live magical creatures, if you're looking for something, you can find it. Each of Juliet's Progeny has their own responsibility at the Market.

Juliet herself is the woman in charge. She runs her Market cleanly and efficiently with an emphasis on honest dealing. If she catches crooked dealing in the Market, customer or merchant, you will be banned.

Godric is her right hand, her second in command. He is usually roaming the Market to handle any smaller scuffles or disagreements. If Juliet is not present, she trusts him to make the decisions.

Li-Na and Louis are appraisers. If you're unsure of the worth of an object, buying or selling, these are the two to go to. Between them they can determine age, authenticity, value, and safety of the object you bring to them.

Grace and Liu-Min are the saleswomen reps for Juliet. For items personally being sold by the Prosper name, these two are the ones to handle it. They're both great hagglers and can help you find what you're looking for, even if it's not at their booth.

Paris and Aina are security. If things get out of hand or you need to be removed from the Market, they will be there to 'kindly' show you the door. You put up a fuss, well, they are allowed to use force... and that could mean a few broken bones or a pint of missing blood. Or both.

Starmap Hourglass

QUALITY : 5 star SUB STAT: CRIT DMG%.

ABILITY ( Graceful Rose ) : Increases Shield Strength by 29%. Scoring hits on opponents increases ATK by 4% for 8s. Max 5 stacks. Can only occur once every 0.3s. While protected by a shield, this ATK increase effect is increased by 100%.

APPEARANCE : a catalyst that is an hourglass with a star-map as the center, that spins when it attacks and with small floating star shaped bits that orbit it, that are revealed to be glass upon closer inspection.

part of the weapon animation, instead of impact effects little splash effects rather than impact effects 2 give the effect that it's cutting ppl rather than just hitting them. when the atks miss u can hear small shatter-y effects like glass hitting the ground, and depending on the region, it can change in volume and type of sound.

mondstadt : slightly muffled, but sounds like furin / japanese glass windchimes.

liyue : loud, more crunchy- more like a glass being thrown against a hard rock surface and then scattering.

inazuma : it sounds like glass rattling / buzzing. with a sharp breaking noise, similar this video : cw ( bright flashing lights and loud electrical noises / glass breaking. )

sumeru : very muffled, far more distant sounding in the rainforest, kinda like ur hearing fulgurite wind chimes-  and in the desert, it’s similar to liyue, albeit with less reverb .

LORE : this was a weapon specifically commissioned for a future coming of age ceremony, when aina nakamura-glaes realized she wouldn’t be able to watch her beloved daughter become an adult.

of course, that kind of forethought had raised several eyebrows, within the family, from acquaintances and the nakamura-glaes’ social circle at large : andromeda- who was merely ten at the time, had yet to receive that most coveted blessing of the gods : a  vision , nor would they gain such a power for another seven years. yet, aina remained steadfastly, foolishly, confidant the gods would, indeed smile upon her child.

when asked about it, alpin nakamura-glaes, simply shrugged and would say : visions tend run in families, don’t they ? it’s not unheard of- before promptly changing the subject.

it’s a shame, aina never saw the fully blossomed fruit of her labor. but she created the blueprints for it herself, drawing from her memories of traveling the world with her infant daughter, and newlywed husband, the sights and sounds they had seen together.

( andromeda would find the whole thing funny. she was her mother’s child. ) the glass stars that danced around it, a show of their family’s power and influence, the expensive and fragile glass that many coveted, used as a decoration for a child who had not yet inherited such powers.

to anyone who was not herself, aina would’ve said that she had no regrets at the end of her life. the regrets she took with her to the grave were that she could not see her daughter blossom into the beautiful adult they would become, and that her soulmate and she would not grow grey and wrinkled together on the shore of her homeland.

andromeda was gifted this weapon before they had left for inazuma, in a small yet ornate wooden chest- nestled in deep blue silk-velvet. for andromeda- the fact it still existed was a miracle. the last reminder of her mother, a thing that had not yet tainted by the venomous hatred of her stepmother ; the knowledge that yes, aina had prayed that her beloved daughter would be smiled upon by the gods- and that prayer had been answered, regardless of the journey it took to get there.

Terrible woman. Bad woman. Sexy woman. (Come on, at least one of your characters needs to be your personal Dream Girl ok?)

Haniya Aina is the princess of Sina, heir to the throne. She's the first child of Queen Susuma and also the most troublesome. Yes, even more so than her younger brother, an illegitimate son and murderer.

Why? Because Sina is rabidly homophobic and, quite frankly, she can't pretend to like a man to save her damn life.

She can, however, fall in love with the unwilling representative of Breme, her country's mortal enemy: Cerie Korviridi.

Of course, she does this in the most annoying way possible.

Haniya's primary motivator is curiosity, which I'd say is a good trait in a ruler. She wants to know everything about anything she can get her hands on: stories of other countries, gossip, random disciplines she'll never have the chance to practice because they're too unladylike. A total bookworm, which leads to some interesting moments between her and Cerie:

("Pearl divers" is the derogatory term for lesbians used in Sina, which I personally think is a hilarious euphemism.)

Does Haniya actually want to be a princess?

Hell no. Of course, she loves the money and status and pretty things that come with it, but the responsibilities, the loneliness, the expectations about her behavior and life ... awful.

Haniya wants to be someone different, someone more alive. Let's see how she explains it in her own words:

Being a royal has to be one of the most thankless yet glamorized positions ever. There's so little freedom, yet all the freedom in the world; so many rewards that aren't very rewarding. While the money, status, and power can be intoxicating to many, and it's great to always have one's creature comforts taken care of, there's a certain death of the spirit required to rule. Her every movement is watched and judged for propriety, and she has to fulfill so many boring obligations. She must be a position, not a person.

There's also the fact that while many gay and lesbian Sinans may be able to hide their sexuality or get away with their relationships, she can't. As a princess, she's expected to marry a (male) royal from another country, or at least a high status individual - love optional. She's delayed it for as long as possible, but her mother, Queen Susuma, isn't getting any younger, and the pressure is mounting for sure.

Being Haniya, she finds a way to solve this little problem in the most catastrophic way possible. Just because.

Personality-wise, Haniya is headstrong, sassy, a bit petulant, but very loyal once she gets to know someone. She's far more open-minded than the rest of Sina, who considers the Bremish essentially a stupid horde of barbarians. Most importantly, she's persistent. If she wants something, she'll get it; maybe that's by dint of being spoiled, or maybe it's just her essential nature.

Whatever the reason, she's willing to go to great lengths once she desires something, and she won't let anything stop her. Not royal rule, not terrible extenuating circumstances, not her own fears and insecurities.

What else do we need to know about Haniya?

Top ten Haniya Facts, in no particular order:

1. She loves her black mare, Saelsie, who is also pretty stuck-up. She trained in what we would call dressage, but her favorite thing to do is just ride her horse across fields, something she doesn't get to indulge in much. 2. One of her favorite things is music boxes. She finds them fascinating! All those teensy little gears. Emissaries from other countries often bring them for her as a way to get in her mother's good graces. 3. Haniya's signature perfume is called Sinan Sugar, designed just for her by one of the country's premier perfumers. It has hints of sugar, orchid, and roses. 4. She had a quick fling with a maid on the down-low when she was younger. Her mother found out and dismissed the servant from service, and she never tried for a relationship again. Well, until Cerie showed up. 5. While she is a competent dancer because it's expected of her, her favorite dances are ... provocative to say the least. And she doesn't get to practice them for obvious reasons. 6. Her favorite books are all travel diaries from far-flung places, another thing she demands from anyone who visits her. 7. Haniya has always had a strained relationship with her parents, who are not in the least bit loving or affectionate. Definitely has some mommy issues due to this cold upbringing. She's not very close to her father, who is kind of a spineless coward. 8. Being basically raised by governesses and teachers, Haniya grew very close to them and was devastated when her mother sent them away once she grew older. She's not close to any of her current maids and they don't feature in the stories with her. 9. If Haniya could craft her perfect life, she'd be a traveling merchant who wrote stories of her visits to faraway lands. 10. When she was younger, Haniya used to sneak out of the palace and just wander around the city by herself, looking at all the commonfolk and being a little weird due to her sheltered upbringing. She'd tie her hair up in braids that always came undone; pink is a common enough hair color in Sina, and she figured no one would recognize her. Unfortunately, she was caught by a merchant who noticed her, and that put the kibosh on her excursions.

While Haniya does not feature in 9 Years Yearning or the beginning of the Eirenic Verses series, she plays a significant role in the second half, so keep an eye out for her!
